It’s time for us to face up to an ugly truth: it’s not just men who can be murderers and violent, abusive attackers of the opposite sex.
This was brought into grim focus last week with the horrific case of Sharon Edwards, 42, who brutally murdered her husband, David, 51, by stabbing a 13-inch carving knife through his heart.
A serial man-abuser, Mrs Edwards inflicted 60 stabbing and prodding wounds to her husband. While in court, Sharon brazenly lied that David “walked into” the knife. She is currently serving at least 20 years in jail for murder.

[ Sharon Edwards on her wedding day ]
You could argue, or pray, that Sharon Edwards is a monstrous one-off. Yet cases of female brutality against men – and other women – seem to be becoming more prevalent.
Women murdering men is still mercifully rare. In 2014/15, 19 men died at the hands of their partner or ex-partner, compared with 81 women. However, the number of women convicted of perpetrating domestic abuse has more than quadrupled in the past ten years, from 806 in 2004/05 to 4,866  in 2014/15.
Male domestic violence charity The ManKind Initiative say that for every three victims of partner abuse, two will be female and one will be male. According to the Office for National Statistics, 2.8 per cent of men – 500,000 individuals – suffered partner abuse in 2014/15.
While it's important to state that more women than men suffer domestic abuse in Britain (4.5m women versus 2.2m men over the age of 16, according to the ONS), there remains a theory that men under report their experiences due to a culture of masculine expectations.
Staggeringly, a recent report from liberal Canada, where men are encouraged to talk about their feelings, showed that men are more likely to suffer spousal violence, with 342,000 women and 418,000 men suffering abuse in the preceding five years to 2014.
Could the same be true in other countries – like the UK? It’s possible: the ManKind Initiative say only 10 per cent of male victims will tell the police, as opposed to 26 per cent of women.
What's more, violence against men by women isn’t limited to partner abuse.
Last September, Sarah Sands stabbed her neighbour, Michael Pleasted, 77, to death after learning he had 24 previous convictions for sex offences against minors. Despite committing a "frenzied attack", she was sentenced to only three and a half years for manslaughter.
Last July, Tom Borwick, 27, the son of a Tory MP, was viciously beaten and left unconscious by a “girl gang” in a Leicester Square KFC. Then, to add insult to his serious injuries, he was ejected by security who refused to help him.
In January, Shadiya Omar was given a suspended prison sentence after she stabbed Justin Lloyd, also 22, in the eye with her stiletto shoe after a bust-up in a Manchester taxi queue. Hundreds blasted the lenient sentence as “a joke,” pointing out Omar would surely have been jailed if she were a man.
Such stories shatter the false narratives that only women get battered, that men are never victims, and that women never attack.
But politically the system is stacked against men. While ending violence against women and girls (VAWG) has rightly been a governmental priority, there is not only no specific strategy to end violence against men. Attempts to modify the VAWG strategy to include male victims have been actively resisted.
As a direct consequence, while last week Nicky Morgan pledged another £80 million to end VAWG, the ManKind Initiative – one of only two UK charities that specifically helps male victims of domestic violence – will close its helpline in May as it couldn’t raise a comparatively modest £45,000.
By so clearly intimating that victims don’t matter if they are men, it can only further add to male victims’ reluctance to come forward.
We should unite in condemning all perpetrators of partner abuse, men and women, and treat all victims, men and women, with equal compassion.
Mark Brooks, Chairman of the ManKind Initiative, says: “Domestic abuse is a crime against an individual, not a crime against a gender. Those that hold that view are clinging to an old-fashioned, politically correct view of the world that has no place in the 21st century when equality for all victims solely based on need has to be the answer.
"Taking a gendered approach to domestic abuse is only acceptable when both genders are included”.
We desperately need to de-gender the domestic violence debate to help smash society’s last great taboo: female violence against men.

The complete list of films featured on this blog’s 2024 “31 Days of Oscar” marathon
Hello everyone,
Thank you once more for allowing me to present this annual marathon of Oscar-nominated films to your dashboards. This year, the films were grouped by category (for the most part, one day featured only films nominated in a particular category). This is the most exclusive period on this blog, as the selection of films that I can post and queue about is at its most limited. But at the same time, the blog is at its most accessible as this yearly marathon’s selection skews to more popular fare than what I usually queue. I hope you enjoyed this year’s presentation of 31 Days of Oscar once more!
What follows is the exhaustive list of all 381 short- and feature-length films featured on this blog over the last thirty-one days for the 31 Days of Oscar marathon. This is down from 2022’s record of 420. But that count remains only a fraction of the 5,145 films that have been nominated for Academy Awards since 1927 (excluding Honorary Oscar winners that weren't nominated in a competitive category).
Of those 382, 28 were short films (53 short films is the record, which was set in 2022). 354 were feature films.
BREAKDOWN BY DECADE 1927-1929: 10 1930s: 51 1940s: 54 1950s: 44 1960s: 42 1970s: 26 1980s: 26 1990s: 23 2000s: 26 2010s: 26 2020s: 54
TOTAL: 382 (380 last year)
Year with most representation (2023 excluded): 1938 and 1942 (9 films each) Median year: 1966
Time for the list. 59 Best Picture winners and the one (and only) winner for Unique and Artistic Production that I featured this year are in bold. Asterisked (*) films are films I haven’t seen in their entirety as of the publishing of this post. Films primarily not in the English language are accompanied with their nation(s) of origin.

There is no such thing as an unproblematic piece of media, production team, or morally-pure person. There isn't. There's only "what flaws I am willing to put up with," which is going to be different for every person. If your friend has a different level of acceptable bullshit than you, it's probably fine, actually? The sooner people learn that, the happier in general they will be.

Listen, if you are on Twitter and you haven't recently downloaded your data, you really need to. Like, now.
With the recent layoffs, I am willing to bet money that Twitter is going to implode very soon. Maybe not permanently, but dramatically, and very, very soon. Like "Liz Truss vs a head of lettuce" soon.
I base this quite simply on knowing the kind of shit my wife deals with every day, and listening to people on the news who have talked to Twitter employees about the site at all. Not only do I think there's some Thing that will cause Twitter to puke all over itself like a 19yo who just discovered wine coolers, but I think there are multiple Things, and they are not in the future. They are occurring right now.
They fired the people who know which software licenses are up for renewal next. They fired the people who know that this cache needs to be manually emptied, and yeah they should have written a script for it but there were so many other projects that it was easier for Bob to just manually do it on Friday mornings while on his 2nd cup of coffee. They fired the people who know to not poke this thing in that way bc this thing works in a non-standard fashion, but it works, so even though the software manual says "poke it," don't do that. They fired the people that know that this queue getting up over X number of tickets means it starts eating tickets and erasing half the data you need to fix issues, so you have to compress the ticket numbers at least every 2 days with an ad hoc utility script that Jane wrote after your team discovered this issue. Not all of the institutional knowledge is gone, but a lot of it is, and once that knowledge is gone, it's not coming back. Once that knowledge is gone, things unravel quickly at an institution that size.
Whatever happens on the social end of things - and that's a fucking mess - make your contingency plans for not losing touch with people now, and get downloads of your shit. Now. Not later. This will not fizzle out like LiveJournal. I'm willing to bet that it will simply cease to be one day soon. It might come back once it disappears.
I'm just not counting on it, and neither should you.

If you think these "anti drag" pushes aren't going to be used against trans people for just existing in public, you really really need to read up on the vice laws which caused Stonewall.
If you think Stonewall was only trans women and transmascs/butches/trans men weren't arrested during the leadup to the riot, you need to read up on who was there, who was arrested, and why.
They are coming for all of us. Your supposed respectability will not save you. We will survive this if we stick together, and only if.

Just me crying in the bathroom so I don't wake my partners with this, fuck.
So to sum up: CT and DC have passed laws making it illegal to extradite someone to another state if they are being charged in that other state for crimes pertaining to abortion or trans health care, and makes it legal to sue and get your money back if you are targeted by a TX-style "bounty" law. DC also includes "crimes" of consensual adult sex, gay and interracial marriage and cohabitation and providing or using contraception.
This is, as the thread explains, basically legal interstate warfare. CT and DC's laws bar compliance with such laws.
This is, on one hand, kind of terrifying, because this is where we are now. It's going to get worse long before it gets better.
On the other hand... holy shit, someone fucking did something.
Someone fucking did something real.

A reminder of that powerful clip Jodie Whittaker released for fans, especially children, on March 25, 2020, two days after covid lockdown began in the UK.

So before I fall asleep and forget panels
Mandip really has loved every minute, talks about how good a "number one" is - Jodie leading the cast in a totally supportive way so everyone had lunch in her trailer just as a matter of course as they talked things out and she looked out for them; she's "the boss" to Bradley Walsh and even he was impressed by how she does that BTS job of kind of being the captain and anchoring/guiding them (Colin Spaul who did classic Who and new mentions there really isn't much time for rehearsal now, unlike the old days, so not a lot of time to plan and experiment)
S11-12 Jodie was 1, Brad 2, Tosin 3, she was 4, and she probably should've been 3 with John Bishop's experience but Jodie said absolutely not; also in scenes without the Doctor Mandip was half jokingly being 1 but had actually learned a lot from Jodie about leading a cast, a lot of bts stuff she'll take with her [parallelling Yaz!] obviously admires her as well as being really good friends
it's Mandip's first con in the states so of course she's getting really competitive trying to beat Barrowman's ribbon collection
she doesn't think of it as work (she said this at the smaller meet & greet) she really does love acting!
Mandip was a little disappointed they had to stay in wales ("I love Wales!" she hastened to add) for s13 after going to S Africa and Tenerife and Bulgaria, but she liked the continuity, getting to work with actors for several stories like past work
Her favorite stunt so far, although they're tiring, was the crane, just because she'd been doing "telly in the kitchen" right before that, and that scene told her right away this was Big (although she didn't like the heights)
upside down isn't as fun as she thought it would be; headache!
She didn't know that yaz was going to fall for the Doctor until she read those lines on the page — she and Jodie were both like "hm, yeah, we can work with this!" —although it was a natural progression. Until then had been playing it that Yaz admired and loved the Doctor in one way or another, but it totally made sense (she talked about falling in love after becoming good friends with someone, and about how Yaz's flashes of anger with the Doctor are because it hurts more when someone you love hurts you; you don't care so much "if it's a bus driver being rude")
Yes, she had her "Thasmin is canon" ribbon; it was the first thing she mentioned, to much applause. Given her by interviewer Riley Silverman
She talked about representation, understanding it as an Asian actor and why it matters to see characters like you on the media you watch.
And it was just a relaxed and comfortable interview. Riley mentioned at lobbycon that Mandip appreciated Riley had really listened to what she said, more than most interviewers do, which Riley noted as sad. [That's the trouble with prepared questions. Riley is a standup comic, so she's better at improv.]
I feel like I should have more for Sacha but his interview was before Mandips and the interviewer's questions weren't as good.
He has tremendous respect for and spent a lot of time with Waris Hussein. (Who said he did a good job, except while watching rehearsal "I was more posh."
Sacha joking about his not-posh Mancunian (Manchester) accent: he's the first Master not to call himself Maaaahst-ah with that initial posh a-sound. He's from a small village in Manchester, misses it.
Talked a lot about variable modes of his Master, that rather than wearing latex masks he rips off, he likes to settle into other roles, other lives, almost as if he's trying to escape being himself — he's the "Master of disguise" and keeps acting in new ways so you're never quite sure which is the real him.
Got down into his mind a little bit, being resentful of not being appreciated, old friends/enemies with the Doctor, etc etc etc.
Suggested a wild idea— with canon changing/refreshing in weird ways — he could be the next Doctor (I almost think he meant his Master; he's still learning the lore. But he was joking around.)
Asked if he had a controversial take on the Master, what he would have his Master say, he kind of curled around the mike and did a tortured "I love you, Doctor" which would have caused several shippers' heads to explode. I'm not sure he is aware of the shipping, although I suspect by the end of this weekend, he'll be informed.
He and the interviewer had mentioned therapy at some point, so they concluded that perhaps s14 should include the Doctor and the Master in couples therapy.

Hihi! Spotify wrapped game: Doug x Dylas and use song 42 :)
Spotify Wrapped Inbox Prompt: Accepting! 42. Draft Dodger Rag by Phil Ochs
A/N: SPINCH LOL!! Oh my god. This song choice. I had NO IDEA what to do with this. And also how to not make it deeply political bc I’m not in the mood to do that, lol. SO. Here you go. This was my best attempt, at Doug dodging the draft xD. Thank you so much for sending in the request, this was extremely fun and silly. Also thank you @randomstarmuffin for helping me think of this idea. It was gonna be this or a M*A*S*H AU, since the song reminds me of that show, and I don’t need more excuses to have MASH brain rot. Also. Forgive me for any inaccuracies here. I’ve never been drafted into the army, so all my research is from old 1940s movies I used to watch with my dad, and I didn’t know how to google more of this without plunging myself into hours and hours of research.
~
Well, shit.
Fuck. This is a problem. This is definitely a problem. How in the absolute hell is Doug going to get himself out of this one? He’s gotten himself both into and out of a great many things, but this one seems like a particularly large and difficult-to-get-out-of sort of thing he’s in.
“First and last name?” asks (or rather, demands) the very official-looking government employee sitting in front of a desk, staring at Doug impatiently. Doug shifts on his feet. A whole queue of people wait around him, also filling out their enlistment cards or waiting to do so.
Doug fights off a groan. “Doug Reid.”
“Height?”
Doug sweats. “Um. Seven-foot-ten.”
The man, slowly, looks Doug up and down, and then raises a very unimpressed eyebrow at him.
“Two-foot-one?”
“That one’s more believable,” scoffs the man.
“Hey! Watch it, asshole.” Doug’s irritation spikes, which is maybe not the best move considering the position he’s in. Okay, so smooth-talking his way out of this is probably not going to work. Neither is faking an injury, because honestly Doug’s never been a great liar. He wishes he would’ve stolen his sister’s inhaler on his way here. Maybe he can pretend he has a spleen problem?
“Height?” The man repeats, less patiently.
“Ugh. Fight-foot-five, okay?”
The man writes it down. “Weight?”
Doug goes through the rest of the process with the employee, multi-tasking as he cusses out every government employee that has ever existed (and also every single politician while he’s at it, too), and also trying to figure out another way out of this. Could he pretend to be married? Maybe say his wife is pregnant? Would that work?
A loud noise startles him out of his thoughts.
At some point, a very tall man with long hair had stepped up next to him in the queue, also filling out an enlistment card with a government employee. Most notably, the tall man is also putting up quite a big fuss.
“Yes,” he says with a groan so annoyed and an expression so deadpan that Doug is a actually a little bit impressed, and continues to eavesdrop (it’s hard not to). “I’m actually six-foot-five. What? Too tall to join? Fantastic, can I fucking go home now?”
The man tries to leave, but the employee calls out “Sir-- please wait!”
“Ahem,” says the employee that Doug himself is dealing with. “Attention here, please, sir. I asked, what’s your marital status?”
Oh. Hm.
Doug’s not sure why he does it. Maybe it’s because he feels like a kindred spirit, a little bit, to how much the tall man also seems to hate this whole process. Maybe it’s because Doug is absolutely desperate to not be sent away from his family, possibly to his own death. Maybe it’s because the tall man is actually kind of a little bit handsome.
There’s a whole multitude of reasons. They’re all pretty fucking stupid, Doug will think in retrospect.
But, for now? Well, a man does what he must.
“Yeah, I’m married,” Doug says, a little extra loud and attention grab-y. Before the employee can finish writing that down, Doug adds, “Actually, it just so happens my spouse is over here. Oh, honey?” He turns to the tall man, who immediately gives him a quizzical look.
In a split-hair of a second, Doug and the man share an entire conversation with just their eyes.
You’ll do anything to get out of this? Doug’s eyes ask.
Yeah. You? the tall man’s eyes respond.
Yup.
Then Doug grabs the man by the lapels of his coat, pulls him down (for what feels like miles, by the way), and kisses him long and hard. And kisses him, and kisses him, and kisses him. And he kisses Doug back.
Doug can vaguely feel all eyes in the room on them. He can hear a few gasps, a few clasps. He barely focuses on that, though. What he really focuses on is the feeling of this man’s lips against his, a little rough, a little dry, but surprisingly very pleasant.
Huh, Doug thinks. I actually kinda like this.

@its-tea-time-darling
because this 40k fic isn't getting any shorter and it's looking less and less like slowburn with each section
wtf you have a thominally wip what the fuckwhatthefuckwhathesjxbhshdsjxbdbbsdbbd
yep! it started as a way to hit as many thomally week prompts as I could in one fic, and has expanded greatly since, leading into thominally. no idea when it'll be anywhere near done, because it's not now!

My #1 post of 2022
@monkey-d-momo
I wanted to know what you liked so much about my empath Thomas headcanon and if you're gonna publish your fic soon (no pressure or course, but like you, I really like this headcanon and I need more of it haha) Love you!
-thominho-incorrectquotes
okay, so you know when you read a prompt or smth and immediately have Ideas™️? That's what happened. I read your headcanons and was like: I need 500 fics about this immediately, and I have Ideas for one so I will write it myself.
Also, it's a different take on Thomas’s character, especially because we all see him as oblivious to, well, everything. Empath Thomas can be oblivious, but it has to be done differently, because he knows what people are feeling--he feels it himself. So maybe he doesn't trust his own emotions now, because while sometimes it's easy to tell that it's not his, he can’t always do that. Especially when they're very similar to what he's feeling. Hence Thomas sticking with logic and objectivity when he can, when he has time to think things through. He ignores everything he feels because he doesn't know what's his.
(This is not a good idea, Thomas.) He also doesn't talk to anyone about this in true Thomas fashion of questioning everything that's not personal, so as far as he knows, it's normal.
Minho eventually figures out that Thomas never seems to respond emotionally to anything, and they're a bunch of teenage boys stuck in a Maze. Like, emotional outbursts aren't super common but he’s never met someone who just... doesn't respond to anything. Ben's attack? Yeah, Thomas was scared, but then Ben was probably scared too (Thomas knows the anger didn't come from him.) So he hides his reactions as best he can and pretends they don't exist.
Minho figures out that Thomas can feel everything, and has no defense against it, when something happens to Thomas and Thomas, mostly out of it, tells Minho to stop worrying because it hurts.
(Thomas does not remember this, but part of the reason he sticks to the Deadheads to sleep here is because some of the Gladers have nightmares, which equals strong emotion, which overwhelms him and causes him physical pain.)
And so Minho starts trying to figure out how Thomas can block or mute others' emotions and help him trust his own again, but it’s a slow process, and then the Scorch happens and Denver happens and they don’t have time, and it turns out that Thomas has just been shoving everything behind mental shields and it's too much one day and well... that's definitely not a good thing.
This got a little long! I kind of focused on the whumpier side here but there is fluff that goes with it (and a definite happy ending).
As for the fic, the above is kind of where I'm planning on taking the longer version. The shorter verison, which will only be Fever Code Era, involves Minho figuring it out on his own and working to help Thomas. Then he gets sent to the Maze, and of course later Thomas does as well, which means all progress is reset re: managing empathic abilities. That will hopefully be done sometime next week, but my work schedule is still up in the air so no promises.
Thanks so much for the ask, Momo! 💜 Really hope I do this justice.

RD

2) 5 juin 2020

Paris - Santiago
After the drama of missing our flight to Chile the first time round, I am happy to report that our second attempt went off without a hitch. It was a long overnight flight (14.5hrs) but it was fine. A good opportunity to watch some movies and we both got more sleep than we expected. We arrived in Santiago blurry eyed but excited and keen to make the most of the one day we had. While we were waiting at passport control we spotted the Wu-Tang Clan, who promptly made their way to the front of the queue. Bit rude.
After checking into our hostel we decided to go on a self-directed walking tour in order to see the main sights. Santiago sits in a valley surrounded by the Andes mountains so there are great views from most places. One of the best viewing spots is atop Saint Lucia hill, though it took a sweaty climb in the afternoon heat to make it up there. The rest of the tour took us through Santiago's chaotic shopping streets, stopping occasionally to sit in a nice plaza or look at a nice statue. We also had our first couple of empanadas in a famous, 80 year old cafe. The last site on the tour is another, much larger hill, San Cristobal. We wouldn't be walking up this one but we took a funicular to the top to take in some more amazing views. After descending the hill we were pretty tired so went to one of the trendier neighbourhoods to have a few beers. It was a shame that we only got to have one day in Santiago but we were pleased with the amount of things we got to see. We were due to travel to the west coast the next day to go to Valparaíso.
Daniel
A 2 hour bus journey later we arrived in Valparaiso in the late afternoon. It is a port city known for its colourful houses, graffiti art, and its 42 hills. We were staying up one of the hills in an interesting hotel made out of old shipping containers, which was a new one for us. The hotel has a nice terrace giving great views of the sea and a good birds eye view of the cities colours. On our first evening here we went for a wander around the town taking in all of urban art. Barely a wall can be seen without some cool graffiti. We ended the day with a beer on a nice restaurant terrace.
On our full day in Valpo (as the locals call it) we decided to go on an organised walking tour which promised to show us the Valpo that tourists normally don't see. A local guide took us walking around the old town and gave us a bit of a history lesson. It was a major port during the gold rush days and many grand mansions were built there. However, the opening of the Panama canal took a lot of the money away from Valpo and this downturn, combined with a few earthquakes, has left the old town damaged and neglected. The guide then took us on a bus up the top of the hills were we saw lots more art and a former prison turned cultural centre and we learnt about life under the Pinochet dictatorship in the 90's.
After the tour we went to a nice Peruvian restaurant (it felt appropriate as we had originally decided on going to Peru before our plans changed) and then jumped on a bus to the neighbouring beach town, Vina Del Mar. Vina is more upmarket than Valpo and has all the fancy hotels and beaches. Our first stop was to a nice gardens which contained an old palace which was now an art museum. It was a beautiful palace and contained some great paintings. We also got to see one of the famous Easter Island heads at a another museum which was cool as we haven't got time to visit the island on the this trip. We ended the night back at our hotel with wine, pizza and some card games on the rooftop.
Valpo reminded us a lot of Naples if you've been there, gritty yet beautiful from the right angles.
As I write we are in the ariport awaiting our flight to Punta Arenas in the south of Chile - the gateway to Patagonia.

Why Is the UK TERF Island?
An answer-
Tradition of Cross-Dressing: Cross-dressing is a common trope in British comedy & has been for centuries - there are a variety of forms with the trope including the pervy dude who dresses as a woman to access womens changing rooms. So men cross-dressing is a cultural norm here: they do it for fun & laughs. See Monthy Pythons 'Loretta' scene in Life of Brian - link in another of my comments up-thread. See also: The Two Ronnies, multiple Monty Python sketches, Mrs Browns Boys, Little Britain, The League of Gentlemen, and pantomime dames. So in the UK if a man or a boy puts on a dress, we don't immediately think "there must be a reason for this!". Plus we had a lot of gender bending in the 1970's, 1980's & 1990's popular culture: men in make up, with long hair, wearing skirts were common, as were women with short hair wearing suits - see Boy George, Annie Lennox & Bowie.
Gender Non-Conformity: Gender non-conformity is quite normal & accepted. I think a lot of this is rooted in women being conscripted to work in traditional male jobs during WW2 (eg. as engineers or in the land army) when all men that could be spared, were recruited to fight. Working class women have commonly failed to conform to a meek, helpless patriarchal version of femininity. And British women through history have worked to dismantle gender stereotypes as 'gender' was often offered up as a reason to limit our rights - so the concept had to be destroyed. Thus gender identity theory isn't a good fit with British culture, as gender stereotypes were never as rigourously enforced here & have been consistently challenged / critiqued. See also: cross-dressing
National Character: We have a national character which can be blunt & unpretentious (we call 'spade is a spade') with a DGAF attitude - particularly in the Midlands / North. We also have a tendancy towards piss-taking & we don't particularly like cheats or queue jumping - it's a national delusion of truth & justice (it's just not cricket). For all the talk of British manners, we can actually be quite forthright - we're very good at being very polite & 'civil' while telling people to 'fuck off' to thier faces. British people might not complain about things to your face, but we'll sure as hell go home & complain to EVERYONE we know about it. We've turned sarcasm & passive aggression into a cultural art form. We also seem to have a natural skepticism, resistance to authority & subconcious collectivism.
British Left: The British left is rooted in left wing, socialist, materialist philosophy & class analysis rather than liberalism. This means the that whole of the left in the UK didn't immediately capitulate to a liberal, idealist philosophy that elevates subjective individial feelings over objective collective material reality. Our long history of class analysis & strong leftwing philosophical tradition gave us a powerful basis from which to resist gender identity ideology.
British Feminism: There is a strong history of feminist thinking, activism & networking, & of feminst participation in the union movement & in left wing & LGB campaigning. This mean British women activists had a lot of experience in debating, public speaking, organising, awareness raising & delivering material political change in the UK - this made it easier for women to quickly build organisations & networks, set up programmes of talks, work politicians, etc in response to proposed changes to the GRA. Compare this to the UK TRAs whose main orgainising seems to be around hidden politcal agendas, counter protests, social media echo-chambers, de-platforming & colonisation fo established spaces, etc.
Secular: We're not divided politically by religion. We're quite a secular society - so getting us to collectively accept that people have 'gendered souls' was going to be a struggle b/c you'd need to get us believe in the idea of souls first. Our lack of a Christian right also means we don't have religiously enforced homophobia so much here. And gay & lesbian people are part of our cultural history (even though we treated them like shit). Much of the resistance in the UK is coming from feminists, the left, & gay & lesbian people, and the lack of a Christian right means it's harder to smear British left-wing feminists as right-wing religious conservatives, or to denounce one of the founders of Stonewall as "homophobic".
Long History of Civil Rights: We've been fighting over civil rights for centuries - we know a genuine civil rights movement when we see one, & we know a demand for privilege when we see one. See also: we call a spade a spade & sense of justice.
British Womens Culture: It's almost like a 'culture within a culture': my Mum has a saying 'your son is your son until he gets a wife, your daughter is your daughter until the end of your life'. And it's true - there is quite a strong female bond in the UK. I saw it through the female lines in my family with my great aunts, grandmothers & aunts; the women will take on the men in defence of each other - I've seen my 70 year old mother take my 42 year old brother to task in defense of my SIL. She just wouldn't tolerate that kind of shit from him.
Which relates to another aspect of traditional British female culture: the 'battle-axe' - these are older, formidable women who are fierce, determined & take no shit. They're a common trope in British TV (eg. Nora Batty, Ena Sharples) and used to command respect & awe in the British working class. They're not as common these days due to changing social structures, but powerful, courageous women who take no shit are a cultural norm. My maternal great aunt was a battle-axe: she was brilliant & an inspiration.
Country Size, Legal/Political Structure & Population Density: We're quite a small country with a high population density: we have collective experiences as a country & our laws (& power) are very centralised (apart from the devolved powers). This means that you can't really miss the main national issues, as they impact everyone - it's not something remote happening in a state or province on the other side of a large nation. Living cheek by jowel, & having a smaller population than some other countries means that less people have to hear about something for it to become a hot topic, news & ideas spread faster, & you can peak half the women in the country much more quickly as fewer people have to hear about it.

This is a stupid idea, but I’m doing it anyway
I turned 52 last week.
I take this as a sign to restart the 52 Project and get the last 10 stories done.
I’m going to be publishing on Mondays rather than Fridays, because experience now tells me I may well need weekends to finish things. So this Monday, Oct. 25, the first Monday after my birthday, I will be posting number 43 at long last.
After it posts, the rest of the week I’ll be queueing reposts of the first 42 in my main blog ( @alarajrogers). 42′s a ridiculous number to repost in one week but ask me if I care. (The answer is no.)
This is a stupid idea because I’ve got only one of them completed. But there are more than nine incompletes sitting on my hard drive, so wish me luck!

It is 26 degrees outside. It is snowing. You have a tan from the scorching sun. You have to get your winter coat back out. It is torrentially raining. It is a beautiful spring day. A cool breeze is in the warm air. There is frost on the ground. You live in Germany.
