A monster a day - Day 1 - AGUMON

Happy 2024 everyone! I'm trying a personal challenge of doing a warmup doodle of a monster for all 366 days this year (curse you leap year)

Anything that would be considered a monster is free game, including monster guys n gals/Monster forms of human characters/dragons/humanoid monsters and so on!

I'm currently going through the most iconic monster design of all Pikachu! The rest of the evolution line is soon to come!

It's been a while since I've done a goals update, but here I am! I'd like to do a quick comparison between how last year ended up and how things are going this year. Then, I'd like to preview what I'd like to do in February.

お久しぶりです！最近日記を書いてなくて、今月は去年と今年目的をまとめてアップデートしようと思います。それから、2月の目的の話をするつもりです。

2023 Wrap Up

In 2023, I spent the most time with Vocabulary, Kanji, and Listening and the least time in Grammar and Writing. I started off strong with Reading in January, but gradually that fell by the wayside over the course of the year as I got busier with life things. I focused on Listening the most in the last few months of the year, and August was the month I spent my time mostly evenly divided amongst the 7 main areas of study. I tried a lot of new things, like new apps and daily reading goals, but as usual I didn't have enough time to do everything I wanted to do.

I most wish that I could have kept up with the daily history reading (日本の歴史366) but I am glad that I stopped trying to vocabulary mine with novels (I just don't have the time for that, and reading is easier without doing that).

2023 Successes

Studied lots of kanji

Lots of speaking and listening practice with Japanese mom friends

Finished the Sou-matome N3 workbook series

Began teaching my son hiragana (and he recognises some characters!)

2023 Challenges

Less writing than I'd hoped

Not a good time to find a tutor

Not much reading progress on the novels I've started

Need to work on grammar more consistently

So with that said... let's move on to 2024!

January 2024

Now January is over and 2024 is in full swing, but let's take a quick look at what I did in January.

In January, I spent the most time Reading! Starting the year off strong with novels, I made a point to read each day before bed, even if it was only a few pages. I also spent a lot of time Listening to podcasts, dramas, and shows.

I did very little Grammar or Writing practice, but the year is still young. I also focused a lot less on Kanji than I would have liked to in January.

February Goals

For February, I'd like to continue with Reading but also focus more on Kanji, Grammar, and Writing. I get lots of practice with Speaking and Listening thanks to the moms at my son's Japanese preschool, and I continue to pick up Vocabulary when I research words or read novels.

So, my February goals will be:

Read daily

Write sentences once a week

Review kanji flashcards daily

Review 1-2 grammar points weekly

Learn 1-2 new grammar points weekly

What did Pedri and Arias say in the video?

In the first one, Gero thanks Pedri for being part of his challenge and explains that he's gonna do one pull-up with Pedri and the other seven without him. Pedri: Can you handle me? I don't know how much I weigh. Do I only do one with you? Gero: There's no chance I can do all eight. Pedri: What's the maximum weight? Gero: The maximum weight is 86kg. You hang from the back, alright. Pedri: Like a monkey. Gero: I don't know whether to do one or... Pedri: One is fine

In the second one, Gero basically explains the challenge again and thanks Pedri for taking part in it.

In the third one, Gero thanks him for taking part in his challenge and asks him how many days Pedri thinks he's gonna last this time and Pedri says all 366 and that he has faith in him to complete it.

15/366 Days of Growth

Uhu! I did the first quiz from the ISC2 intro and obtained a score of more than 70% which is a good thing, mainly for showing me where I have to focuse in my training for the certification itself.

Good start for a Monday, considering that I am already tired due to the weather here in Brazil (only 40 Celsius and higher over here, it is a nightmare).

I will also face some new challenges at work, technical challenges... 2024 started on fire, and I hope to be strong enough to keep up with it.

Prompt: “He was prisoned in thought. Memory, like a horrible malady, was eating his soul away.” (The Picture of Dorian Gray)

It was sheer misfortune, was what it was. 

Vhagar would not be denied; he had been a fool to think otherwise. Her roar had been deafening. It could have torn the very earth asunder. A thousand times he had dreamed it—the bloody wings, the ruin of a saddle. A thousand times he had seen the dead boy, falling and falling until he smashed against the dark waves beneath them. That same boy now came to him when the stars hung high in the sky, his limbs torn and his mouth open in silent rebuke. And every night, he would come closer, and closer, and closer, a bloodied arm reaching out, searching, his skin as pale as death and cold as ice. 

A thousand times he had dreamed of that hand reaching for his throat, wrapping around it, squeezing and squeezing life out of it. That was how it had been since that fated day, and a thousand times he would sit up, his throat dry, his heart racing, his mouth parted in a silent scream. 

Perhaps he should have curbed his temper, his need for restitution. Perhaps he should have flown straight to King's Landing and sought his lady mother's counsel. The dead will have their vengeance. The living as well. A son for a son. That is what Rhaenyra is promised. That is what his grandsire's spies said. The Rogue Prince will make good on the vow he made to his wife, they said. None of them are safe, they said. 

Aemond stands by the window, his hands balling into tight fists. He has doomed them, and by his own doing, no less. The knowledge of it is already too much for him to bear.
