hi! im reading cycles of a song and i have gone through all your explanations on why you like grima, and while i found them very valid (and interesting, i actually agree on some of your points) i just dont really care for the character enough to read full chapters about his doings. so my question is, are the chapters from his perspective integral to the story? or can i skim through them and still get a grip of the changes you've incorporated into the story? thanks and i hope this doesnt offend u

I mean, depends how much you want to get out of it as a story. Grima's sections are where you get the more philosophical questions on redemption and forgiveness and the importance of love. Boromir's less that, more plot and stuff around family (though gods know Grima's got the family thing happening too, but this time with undead crow brothers).

Overall, I would say that if you skip or light skim the Grima POV you will be missing some Plot Stuff - predominantly the magical/Old God/2spoopy4u stuff. Which does have bearings on things that happen from Boromir's POV. More so for Naming the World, less so for Cycles.

However I thiiiiink you might be able to get away with skip/light skim. I feel like people who aren't me would be able to answer this better. I'm so close to the story that I'm like "eh, you can make it work if you skip Grima" but that's because I already know the wherefores and the why's of things that happen.

FYI on some things that are mostly from his POV:

Eowyn being Dernhelm and whole I AM NO MAN scene

Dunharrow/Paths of the Dead/Oathbreaker Ghost Bit

Gathering the ships at Pelargir and the "off screen" stuff Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli get up to between Paths of the Dead and arriving on Pelennor

Battle of Helm's Deep and Pelennor are split 50/50 with Boromir and you need to know what happened from Grima's POV in at least Helm's Deep to understand the Trees.

Anything with the Rohirrim is basically from Grima's POV

There are some good Legolas/Gimli bits from his POV

The big Plot thing that is important is the Old God stuff that Grima gets up to. And i would say that's pretty important.

That said, it really goes back to what you want out of the story. If it's just Boromir content then yeah I mean, sure, you can probably get away skipping/skimming the Grima bits. If you want to read it for plot and the narrative questions it wrestles with, then no, you do need Grima.

So idk man! I would say try it. If it doesn't make sense maybe give his stuff a bit of a deeper read than just a light skim? It's entirely up to you and what it is you're looking for out of the story.

It's not very spooky, per se, but it is a weird thing I still can't explain to this day. And it scared the hell outta me at the time. It was late at night, getting into the AMs. Around 2, I think. And I was the only one up, just heading to bed. My bed is next to a wall that runs the length of the hallway, and as I laid down, still very much awake, there was the sound of something slapping the wall, dragging along it, and slapping again next to the head of my bed. I dove under the covers (cont'd)

(2) and didn’t come out, even as the connecting door between my room and the bathroom started to creak as if something were pushing it open. The door doesn’t have a knob, nor did it have a hook and eye at the time, and since we had a cat in the house, I always propped a heavy hand weight against the door to keep her from opening it. She couldn’t have moved it.

That is absolutely spooky and creepy. I love it. Has anything happened since? (I’m assuming you’re in the same apartment/house.)
