Well folks, we did it. NaNoWriMo is officially over, many new projects were started, abandoned, or even finished, but no matter how many words you put on the page you should be damn proud of yourself for making something. If you had fun making your project, even for a moment, then congratulations! You won at Nano!

Personally, this month was one of the best ones, creatively speaking, that I have had in a while (even though I really only scratched the surface of the 50k goal for Nanowrimo). I am a full-time English Literature Major, and boy howdy have I written a lot of essays this semester. I'll admit it, on my nano there are a few days I wrote "one word" for my project where I didn't do a damn thing to my project, but there was not a day I didn't write something. Some of those days I wrote hundreds of words--just not for my creative stuff.

While I was watching my nano word count, mildly disappointed each time when the number didn't tick up like I wanted it to, I couldn't help but wonder what my actual word count for this month was (I don't expect it'll get me to 50k, but I do think it'll at least double my word count).

In all, I wrote 16,826 creative words, and roughly** 7.5k in essays.

24k is about half of nano, which doesn't feel like a lot but I'm still so happy with myself for writing that many words and not being completely burnt out on my projects. I really want to do similar (and smaller) projects in the future, likely starting out with a FNAF fic that has been rotting in my documents for the past year lol

I will do more projects, but for now I'm going to drag myself kicking and screaming through these last 3 papers, and then have a nap.

**I say roughly because this is only counting the final drafts of papers, not the rough drafts or notes for them. If I counted those I'd probably have at least double, but I can't be bothered to figure out that math.

Boku no Hero Academia

reconcile by whatagoodegg (100k, WIP, T)

Midoriya and Shigaraki get hit with a Quirk that basically locks the both of them in an indestructible box and makes them unable to physically harm each other. The only way for them to get out?

They have to reconcile their differences.

Obviously, this is easier said than done.

Really well done so far, and it digs deeply into both Shigaraki's and Midoriya's dynamic. It's sympathetic to Tomura but the writer pulls off the tension being stuck with the villain who tried to kill you and your classmates very well, especially in the first few chapters, and their relationship development comes across organically and authentic. (Note: Shigaraki is portrayed younger than in canon)

Yoichi dreams an impossible dream - one perfect day as a hero.

A nice little bodyswap fanfic where the first OFA user wakes up in Midoriya's body for the day.

Japan v. Shigaraki (2237) SCOJ No. 4401 by Anubis_2701 (21k, T)

After months of delay and bureaucratic mishandling, the Japanese Supreme Court has confirmed that the trial of Shigaraki Tomura, the mass murderer, supervillain and terrorist responsible for a slew of horrific crimes across the country, will begin on the 4th of September. Prosecutors say they are confident they can obtain convictions for all 408 charges.

It is unknown at this stage whether Shigaraki himself will take the stand.

The author has put a lot of work into this fake court case and I think it's simply incredible. Lots of things to commend here.

By Any Other Name by SatelliteBlue (258k, T)

Through some freak accident of the universe, Dabi has been invited to compete on The Bachelorette. Have they actually seen his face? Surprisingly yes, and they still want him. For this season they apparently need a ‘bad boy’ to both balance out the hero contestant (why in hell is Hawks involved?) and to trash talk the show in interviews to appeal to audiences who don’t like the scripting. Getting sent on a vacation away from his annoying bandmates to complain and eat as much free food as he wants? Sold.

If there's one BNHA fic you have to try, this is the one. This and the fic below are DabiHawks.

The Sword of Damocles is Swinging by Princeliest (60k, T)

When the Hero Public Safety Commission says ‘jump,’ Hawks skips asking 'how high' and works his way from jump rope to jumping jacks before opening his mouth to complain that he can fly. Their latest request, a PR campaign geared to present Hawks as the heroic icon of the masses, at least seems easier than getting his feathers burned off by Dabi’s pet noumu… Right?

In which Hawks gets surgery, defeats a traumatized villain, receives some unwelcome fanmail, garners the sympathy of terrorists, accidentally forges enough relationships to cumulatively value as at least one friend, and maybe, eventually, asks for help - not necessarily in that order.

Missing Everything by Haptronym (59k, WIP, T)

Izuku misses a very important reveal and ends up with a villain-filled soda bottle instead. In the ensuing chaos, he befriends someone named Toshinori Yagi.

All Might misses the chance to make a snap decision and ends up mentoring a very heroic, very determined child who has no idea who he really is.

6. Probably how much I care. I’m passionate about my interests and I care so much about my friends and family. I also like that I’m curious - in my younger years I was frequently to anxious to try new things, but as I’ve gotten older I’ve grown out of that mostly (ngl drugs have helped) and now I love trying and exploring new things, and I love that about myself.

25. Actually, 25! Most multiples of 5 work for me.

31. Oof. Well, Hozier is my favorite artist and right now I’m obsessed with “All Things End” and “Eat Your Young” from his new EP but really, all his songs are my favorite. I’m also into the Oh Hellos, and I KNOW “Soldier, Poet, King” is cheesy but I do love it. You of course have introduced me to the wonders of Amigo the Devil and from him I like “Hell and You”, “The Weight”, “Hungover in Jonestown”, and “24K Casket”. Also I WILL be playing “Home” by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros at my wedding, I don’t care how over done and cheesy it is, and you will dance with me.

Sorry I can’t give just one song I’m indecisive.

35. Mmm. The first time I listened to the playlist you made me (still one of the best gifts I’ve ever received), I cried when “Beyond the Sea” came on, because my dad loved that song. I don’t really cry much at music, though I will admit “I Lived” by OneRepublic and “Home” by Phillip Phillips get me in my feels. Also, “Across the Stars” from Star Wars and Tchaikovsky’s Pas Deux from the Nutcracker are such emotional pieces of instrumental music they get to me.

36. Damn! Lots of places! All of New England, New York/Jersey, California, Georgia, Florida, Illinois, Virginia, DC. Canada and Germany but I was a baby and I don’t remember it so I don’t count it. England, Scotland, Italy, France, the Netherlands, Belgium. There are many places still left for me to explore, and many places I want to go back to - and of course, I hope you will travel with me!

Have you ever participated in nanowrimo? If so, what was the experience like!

I have, and I have even "won" it before! Bu this is a long ass answer so I'm putting it below a read more. :p

So, here's the deal with the experience of nanowrimo. If it does not mesh with your writing methods, it is an absolute pain in the ass and you can feel like dirt during and afterwards. That's not a reflection on you as a writer or on the event! But the nature of nano means you have to average ~1700 words a day to finish.

For some people, that means ignoring all spelling and grammar mistakes, writing in ways that you personally hate or think are "bad writing", and really pushing yourself to get it out there.

Despite how much I tend to write, I fall directly into that category! So Nanowrimo for me, personally, is painful and frustrating.

THAT SAID: I still participate basically every year.

Why? Why do it if I hate the writing experience?

Because I like what I have to practice and learn to do it!

I have to let go of my perfectionism in a way I can't/don't typically in any way shape or form. I've learned to better manage expectations and disappointment. Several years have taught and re-taught me that I can "fail" or "lose" or "write bad" and that it's not the end of the world. Putting the ego and fear to rest from the combo "I am the worst writer and everyone wishes I'd stop"/"I am a writing god, why aren't you laughing and enjoying my work damn it!" that I suffer from. Learning that I can say "I'm gonna do it" and then can change my mind without consequence has been a godsend.

I think a lot of fanfiction writers specifically would benefit from trying nano at least once! Not because the experience will be fun, but because it will be valuable.

And that all said, I have genuinely enjoyed myself several times as well! I've been participating basically every year since 2010, and part of why I enjoy it is having embraced life as a planster. That's right, I'm a pantser and plotter rolled into one fun sized package. And nano gives me a space where I basically get told to do whatever I want however I want and actually allow myself to go buck wild! Regardless of if I end up planning more than writing or writing pure nonsense, it's a freeing experience as long as I don't let my expectations get warped into punishments.

So, for example, last year in 2021 I participated in NaNoWriMo and started working on my Bloodborne AU! It ended up being a lot more outlining being jammed between written sections so I didn't get too far in my word count despite my outline being over 24k words. 😳 It was still an absolute blast to just jump into and write haphazardly, and while I've kept very little of the original so far, it didn't die just because I failed at nano. It just had to wait for a while instead :)

Another super fun one was 2010 when I wrote "Stop Me If You've Heard This One Before". It was my first attempt and I really enjoyed the challenge of writing daily without over thinking it. I worked my ass off to write that novel and still write fanfiction at the same time. And when I finished the month out, I beat the challenge at 50,004 words with a generic corporate mook meets a blue collar worker and falls in love while learning to be a better person plot line but this time for lesbians (who were totally not B'Elanna and Seven of Nine, s-shut up!). At the time I was very proud of it, even if it included me writing up family recipies for the first time ever and writing out every number as they counted (Held her breath for 10 seconds then exhaled for eight? No! She held her breath; one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten. Then she exhaled her inhaled breath; one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight!). Trash fire fiction, but I felt very accomplished and pushed the right amount that first year!

On the other side, in 2015 I tried it when my anxiety and depression were spiraling wildly out of hand but I was still in denial about it because I didn't want to do meds or go to therapy. Really was just trying to force myself along while being miserable 95% of the time and thought nano would help. Shockingly, it did not do that! My science fiction novel outline was shit, I abandoned it immediately anyways and I hated everything I did manage to write. I'd write a little then nothing for several days, just feeling bad I wasn't writing, then a little more, then nothing and feeling bad, etc. I hit almost 30k by the end of the month and I hated the experience, hated the book, hated myself, and hated everyone else who was having a great time. I deleted "Black Moths" from my computer and the back up USB I used at the time, and I deeply regret that. I don't even remember what my story was. I really wish I could read it though, because I bet anything it wasn't bad at all, but it's still gone forever as far as I can tell.

This has gotten wildly out of control (when do my answers not get out of control?) but TL;DR: I have and the experience has been a total mixed bag of highs and lows, that I would absolutely recommend every writer attempt but not feel bad if they need to stop at any point for a good stress cry.

2021 Year-End Fic Review

How many stories did you complete?

13 – though the exact number depends on the definition of “complete”... many of those 13 belong to a yet-unfinished series and are loosely interconnected. But since they are theoretically one-shots, I say they count lol

What is your total word count for the year?

When you peel away the meta and the parts of the ongoing stuff that were posted earlier, the total comes to around 24k, which is… MORE than I actually expected. I was honestly thinking something in the vicinity of 10k, but I guess all the small pieces do add up!

What fandoms did you write in this year?

LOTR, overwhelmingly so - but there’s also a couple of Hobbit pieces and a single ASOIAF fic.

Did you write more, less, or roughly about what you expected?

More! Way more! Of course, after 2020 when I got out a total of three (3) short pieces, anything is more, but I’m honestly impressed! Go me!

What’s your own favourite story of the year?

…not exactly “favourite”, but By a Sleep to Say We End is a piece I’m honestly proud of. It wasn’t an easy one (couldn’t be, considering the subject matter), but in the end it came together the way I wanted it to, and I’m glad that I wrote it.

What is your most underappreciated story of the year?

I have to say Love’s a Stolen Season, because I put a ton of work into the research (all the cocktails and bar interiors!), and I feel like the smut is rather emotionally compelling, but the response has been kind of meh. (Could also be that the Hobbit fandom is less active these days and Fili/Kili wasn’t *that* big a ship to begin with. Ah well, I wrote it for ME anyway.)

Biggest fanfic-related disappointment of 2021?

…can’t really say I had any. I wrote some stuff, even posted some of it, and none of it went completely ignored, so I say it all comes out on the positive side! I mean, nothing is worse than feeling you’re shouting into the void.

(Though I must confess it’s *always* a disappointment when I end up not working on finishing my WIPs and starting new things instead, but that’s every year…)

Biggest fanfic-related surprise of 2021?

Don’t know about biggest, or surprise, but I’m pretty pleased about the way the LOTR Zombie AU (Modern Setting) took off writing-wise. There’s something very liberating about writing a deliberately disjointed series, and it was fun writing whatever I damn well pleased without worrying how it would fit in with something else. (Also it’s kind of grim, which I suppose worked as a kind of exorcism for, you know, everything.) And the series is not even done yet – I have a couple of unposted bits and pieces left that just need a bit of polishing!

Something you’re looking forward to working on in 2022?

The same as every year: finishing and posting a long, multi-chaptered fic. Or, failing that, finally coming to accept the fact that I’m a short story writer, not a novel writer…

But WELCOME to the new multi part fic Eternity where we follow OC's Veronica Rodriguez, Sawyer Holden and Nova Jay throughout their AEW career

Summary - Sawyer, Veronica and Nova wanted nothing more than to "make it". When they have a chance to main event with TK and Kenny Omega sitting front row, how will it go?

other author's notes - keep in mind, me and @adriii-omega wrote this in a day. there might be spelling mistakes, it might not make sense, trust the process <3 and YES a good portion of this is the ACTUAL match.

“Yes Bullet Club is for life, but we’re Eternity.”

“Nova, Veronica, Sawyer you’re on in 10!” The producer yelled, knocking on the door of the dressing room. Though it wasn’t a dressing room, more like a closet. “We’ll be there in a second, damn!” Yelled Sawyer, trying to get her gear on in the tiny corner.

“It would be nice if they gave us an actual dressing room like the guys or something.” Veronica mumbled, pulling on her gear pants. Nova and Sawyer agreed. There could be thousands of dressing rooms, but they always got stuck in a janitor’s closet. “Could you imagine all three of us in our own private dressing rooms?” Nova fantasized as she tied her left boot.

The group of three had always had dreams, as small as a dressing room, to as big as being on the greatest stage of them all. But for now, a janitor’s closet, a couple bucks a night, and a high school gym would satisfy them.

“I got extra tips at the diner today so we can go out to eat after the show this time.” Sawyer announced, smiling towards Veronica, who had just told Sawyer about her craving for a milkshake earlier that day. “Oh thank God, the family I babysat for today only paid nine bucks for FIVE hours.” Nova complained, touching up her makeup.

“Nine?!” “Yeah, spoiled little white kids, AGAIN.”

Veronica and Sawyer chuckled, walking out the janitor’s closet, Nova following close behind.

The three friends had so much in common, but were so different. Like Sawyer for example, the tallest of the three and by far the smartest. She wasn’t afraid to take a bump in front of 10 people or 10,000. She would do whatever it took to make sure she ended up as one of the best professional wrestlers of all time.

Veronica, one of the sweetest people you’ll ever meet. Most people would call her a submission specialist, but making someone tap was just all in a day's work for her. She’ll do anything to put on the most entertaining match anyone in the crowd has ever seen, even if it’s acting like she almost died.

Nova however, was definitely a person who was ready to put on a show, taunts, hyping up the crowd and “OMG” moments were her specialty. She has gotten injured doing those special moves, many times, but she always got back up and showed out to put on the best performance.

All three of them had a purpose and decided they would stick together to reach it.

The whole roster was fond of how close they were. Others envied their success on the independent scene - except one of their closest friends, Warhorse. He was going to be on Dynamite tomorrow` to challenge Cody for his TNT Championship, but tonight, he was at the show, watching the trio wrestle.

They were walking closer to the “stage”, when he stopped them. “You will not believe who’s here!” Sawyer groaned, “Jake you know I hate guessing games so can you jus-”

“Tony Khan and Kenny Omega.” Their jaws dropped. “THE owner and EVP OF AEW?” Nova questioned. Veronica’s palms started to get sweaty. “Why are they here? I don’t even want to be here; there is no way the ACTUAL Kenny Omega and Tony Khan are sitting in a high school gym.” She wiped her hands on her pants and crossed them over her chest. “You don’t believe me? Well you guys will see in about an hour or so.” Warhorse smirked.

“We’re going out now, dipshit.” Sawyer insulted. Nova and Veronica laughed, but Warhorse had more to say, “Didn’t you hear? You guys have been bumped to the main event since the rich guys are out there.”

Suddenly calm, cool and collected Sawyer had her jaw to the floor. “Sawyer?” Nova whispered, shaking her friend's shoulder. “I can’t fly high and be energetic for the last 30 minutes of the show! I’ll break something or pass out!”

Veronica giggled at her friend’s nonsense, “You’ll be fine. C’mon, let's go watch the matches.”

Nova, Veronica and Sawyer sat by a monitor, watching the last few matches before their main event match. They were enjoying some of the two newer wrestlers face off when a hand slammed down on a table. They looked up and saw Madi Wrenkowski, fuming.

“They CUT my match so you guys could have your dumb main event.”

Sawyer held back laughter while Veronica spoke up, “Well it’s not our fault, we didn’t find out till five minutes ag-” “You think you’ll be big cause of a few matches? No way. Just stick to the janitor’s closet.” Madi scoffed, storming off.

“A few 5 star matches to be fair!” Nova called out, receiving a high five from her friends. It had been like this for a while, Madi going off on how she was “better”, but mean girls were SO high school.

They all took a deep breath, knowing it was their time to main event.

When the three reached the gorilla position. They saw Warhorse standing by the curtain waiting for them. Everyone was pretty happy that they got the opportunity to perform for someone like Kenny Omega, but deep down inside Veronica, Sawyer, and Nova knew that they deserved to be in the main event spot a long time ago.

“You three are going to kill it.” Warhorse smiled at his friends. He wondered how cool it would be to see them all in AEW at one time. “Thanks Jake.” Nova said. Sawyer was standing at the curtain, waiting for her cue.

“Say, bitch, I don’t wanna talk.”

Realer by Megan Thee Stallion blasted off the gym walls. The couple hundred of fans there jumped out of their seats to show their love for Sawyer, though she wasn’t supposed to be having such a loud reaction. She walked down the entrance way stopping at a young child who had their hand out for a high five. Sawyer went over to make it seem like she was about to, but smoothly pushed her hair back instead- flipping off the parents as well. As she got in the ring she took a quick scan to look for Kenny and Tony. She spotted them front and center in the front row she gave a sly smirk and went to one of the corners of the ring.

“TOOONIGHTTTTT-“

Nova shot out of the curtain while 24K Magic by Bruno Mars played in the gym. The crowd was also feeling the song as they got up and grooved. Even Tony Khan was bobbing his head along. Nova walked down to the ring, pep in her step. She gave people in the crowd high fives and hugs. She entered the ring and tried to get Sawyer to dance along, but backed away when Sawyer stood over her, glaring and clenching her fists. She walked over to her corner, climbing up to the second turnbuckle, waving at the whole crowd.

“I fly with the stars in the skies…”

Veronica pushed her black shades on as she smoothly walked through the curtain as “Moment 4 Life” by Nick Minaj came on the speakers. It was a perfect song to describe how she felt as she took the audience in at the top of the ramp. Her swagger was untouched but when she stepped in front of Kenny Omega, she felt his eyes never leave her which made her confidence blast through the roof. She used the stairs to get in and leaned on the ropes and waved to the other people that were there.

The three stared each other down, “this is awesome” chants from the crowd already starting. The ref asked all of them if they were ready, then called for the bell to ring. They all circled around the ring, the crowd wondering who was gonna hit first. Nova started taunting the two, planning to get the crowd on her side early in the match.

Sawyer had enough and tackled Nova to the ground, throwing punches, keeping away from the head. Veronica pulled Sawyer off, Sawyer widened her eyes, Veronica irish whipped Sawyer into the ropes, clotheslining her as soon as she came back. Veronica turned at the crowd, cheering along with them, not paying attention that Sawyer just did a kip-up behind her.

Veronica turned around just to be met with a kick to the face. Veronica turned around once, swaying side to side before falling to the ground, selling coming in clutch.

Nova came up from behind Sawyer, drop kicking her and making her fall to the mat. They planned to live to the phrase “fight forever”. Nova walked towards Veronica, dragging her up. Veronica started to gain her consciousness back, kicking Nova in the legs and Nova dodging as many as she could.

While they weren’t paying attention, Sawyer crawled towards the corner, climbing up the top rope, getting in position for a frog splash. It wasn’t till the crowd started screaming till Veronica and Nova looked towards the corner, Sawyer jumping off and crashing into both of them.

She stood up, hyping herself up, looking towards TK and Kenny, smirking.

*match skip*

Sawyer, Veronica, and Nova all struggled to get to their feet trying to use each other for balance. It had at least been 25 minutes of non stop action, and everyone was on the edge of their seat. Sawyer threw a punch in Veronica’s direction , but she attempted to counter it with an arm bar bringing her down to the mat. Nova saw the opportunity as she started to climb to one of the top turnbuckles. With Sawyer’s strength she manages to deliver a powerbomb to Veronica getting out of the arm bar. She crouched in the corner as Nova hit a devastating Macho Man like elbow drop.

But Sawyer broke up the pin by pulling Nova’s leg. Nova slapped Sawyer making Sawyer deliver a right hand back but harder, making her roll out the ring and on the apron. Veronica was slowly getting back up and Sawyer noticed as she charged towards her, making Veronica pull the top rope making her land on the outside. Veronica made her way to the apron where Nova was at; her back turned to Veronica not seeing her jump and wrap her legs around her neck for a reverse hurricanrana. With a loud thud, both of them rolled onto the floor in pain.

Sawyer crawled over , throwing Veronica in the ring and seeing Nova began to stir. Sawyer climbed to the top turnbuckle with her back turned to deliver a perfect moonsault, making the crowd gasp, and Tony and Kenny to stand up. Sawyer held her side, and rolled into the ring ready to finish the match. She stood in the ring, waiting for Veronica to get in position for her finishing move. Veronica stood and it was too late, and she tucked her chin ready for the impact of Sawyer’s devastating Canadian Destroyer.

Sawyer stood up, referee raising her arm in the air. She tried to bite back her smile but simply couldn’t. She watched as Veronica and Nova started to walk backstage, exiting the ring, breaking out of character as soon as she was behind the curtain.

Veronica, Nova and Sawyer started talking about the match, complimenting each other. “Excuse me ladies?” They looked over, and saw Tony Khan and Kenny Omega walking towards them. Nova spun around and almost caused Sawyer and Veronica to fall over. “Really impressive match out there. You know I didn’t think you guys would have met my expectations but I was way wrong.” Kenny admitted, and Tony agreed. “Yea , we would really love for you guys to come over to our company for a bit. Not on Dynamite yet, but some Dark matches maybe?” Tony suggested. They were beyond excited. Sawyer started imagining all of the memories she could create at AEW, and seeing some people she hadn’t seen in a while - until a certain person popped into her head. “I would love to wrestle for you guys, but does Wardlow know? Or is he even okay with this- “ Veronica gave Sawyer the death stare and Nova let out a laugh. “Wardlow? He’s the one that brought you guys up. He said you were all really talented, and since we’re looking for more women wrestlers you were the right people. Is there something going on between…” “NO.” Sawyer interrupted Tony.

“It’s complicated. I just wanted to make sure he was okay with working with me again.” Nova couldn’t believe Sawyer’s actions and it was making it extremely hard not to burst out of laughter on the spot. Veronica stood in between her friends listening closely to what Khan was saying. She felt eyes on her so she looked up and was met with Kenny’s soft stare. He smiled and looked away making her do the same.

“Yea, so tomorrow I was thinking you guys could get to Jacksonville and see Dynamite, then wrestle after the show?” Tony said. “That works fine with us.” Nova said, smiling wide

“Great!” Kenny said, smiling at Veronica. “Sawyer, Veronica?”

Sawyer and Veronica looked at each other, they could tell what they both were thinking just by the looks on their face. Veronica nodded, Sawyer spoke up, “Let’s do this.” “That’s great, the flight leaves at 11 tonight, so get there as fast as you can,” Tony said, looking at his phone, “Oh and Sawyer?”

Sawyer looked up, “Don’t interrupt me again.”

Nova couldn’t keep in her laughter anymore, not even when Veronica punched her arm and told her to shush. Tony and Kenny left the building, leaving the friends beaming and damn near tears. “Veronica and Kenny sitting in a tree!” Nova and Sawyer started to sing, making Veronica roll her eyes, “Yeah I’ll remember that when we see Wardlow tomorrow.”

Sawyer huffed. “But remember we promised if things ever ended up like this, we would stay together no matter what happens between any of us.” Nova brought up, talking about the promise they all made years before.

“Friends, no matter what.” They all said in unison, knowing in the back of their heads they would be friends for eternity.

05/01/2021: I've just released the 5th update for my Patrons!

Wow, it took me longer than I would have liked to get to this point, but I am not a full time dev and wow, we all know what 2020 was like, haha. Regardless; I'm happy to release the 4th update to the public, and the 5th update for my Patrons.

I'm trying to make plans to finish a good chunk of this game before 2021 by trying to balance some other work, but we'll see how that works. I need to prioritize content that pays my bills, and make sure my mental health is okay. Regardless; the game still gets worked on regularly and I now have another programmer who helps me with the game! So, good news all around, just slow news.

Also, I've added the first art PDF for the game. This is an optional reward you can choose to buy to help support the game and to see art from it! These individual PDFs will eventually be replaced by one big one, so if you want them, get them before the game is finished. More info under cut:

XiSang Fic Recs

I haven’t seen any rec lists floating about, so for the XiSang Week 2020 challenge - Day 7 - Free choice, I wanted to create a rec list of my personal favourites for Nie Huaisang/Lan Xichen ship. There’s actually a lot of stories that are great and I don’t want to duplicate the entire ship tag, so these are just the top 10 that I found super enjoyable: 1. My Heart is a Saber by peskyjellyfish (~11k)

Summary: Huaisang is on his way to Xinglu Ridge when he gets sidetracked. Rec: This is the fic that gave me everything I wanted to read about them post-canon. Nie Huaisang is angry and damaged, Lan Xichen is hurt and curious, and they find the kind of hope in despair that can only be found together. 2. come and find me (lying in the bed i made) by ImaginationCake @demonic-cultivar (~22k)

Summary: After Jin Guangyao dies, Nie Huaisang is ready to enjoy his life free from the burden of revenge plots and subterfuge. But his decisions have resulted in a deep guilt that he can't shake, and he struggles to stay afloat with no one left to support him. To top it off, he finds himself tangled up in politics that he really couldn't care less about.What he does care about is Lan Xichen's opinion of him, but Lan Xichen won't even look at him anymore. Nie Huaisang can only hope that his life doesn't get any worse. Rec: The fic that got me into this ship! ♡ I did of course come to AO3 looking for more NHS & LXC content immediately after watching the Untamed. After seeing that ending scene with their conversation on the Temple’s steps I wanted more, but I wasn’t sure it was a romantic ship for me until I read this story. It’s got everything, a kidnapping, a rescue and a bad case of feelings :D 3. A Skilled Tactician is the Jewel of a Kingdom by Hypatia3 (~50k, WIP) Summary: During the Sunshot Campaign, Nie Huaisang wants to help despite his terrible sword skills. But there are other things he's good at, and nobody can say his mind is weak. But nobody has to know.After all, he wants to go back to his life of general uselessness after the war is over, and Nie Mingjue would never allow it if he saw a single sign of competence from him.But this has consequences that he didn't expect. Rec: One of the absolute best stories in this fandom when it comes to Nie Huaisang’s characterization -- he’s clever and yet so very Huaisang, in such a believable way that *hands* I can’t explain how much satisfaction I get out of reading and rereading this story. Honourable mention: A Decisive Victory by Hypatia3 (~24k, WIP) Summary: When Jin Guangyao acts against the Nie Sect a little earlier, Nie Huaisang ends up in over his head as acting sect leader. But he has a responsibility and a duty to his sect. His brother is counting on him until he recovers.Or Nie Huaisang loses his temper, starts a war, and impresses a lot of people along the way. Rec: This is not marked XiSang, and is a divergence from the earlier Tactician story (around chapter 7) but it’s such fun to read and Huaisang’s interactions with Lan Xichen are top notch, so I can’t help mentioning it here.

4. from tomb to tomb by @the-pretzel (~16k)

Summary: It's a lot easier to get truth out of someone, even one with a very good reason to lie, when they're drunk. Or, five times Nie Huaisang was drunk and once it was Lan Xichen's turn instead. Rec: Written to capture moments over the years during the course of the show, as Lan Xichen and Nie Huaisang dance around each other, this story is absolutely beautiful and vivid. I can still see the scenes of the story pop up in my head like drawings, of Lan Xichen walking in on semi-hungover Nie Huaisang and the sheer tension between them enough to keep you breathlessly reading.

Summary: Nie Huaisang's daemon settles the day he finds out what Jin Guangyao has done. (His Dark Materials fusion) Rec: A very short, very lovely daemon AU, which I’m definitely reading as XiSang :)

5. What I had to do by @ibijau (~20k) Summary: After three years in seclusion, Lan Xichen gets an unexpected guest he would rather have avoided. Yet when he learns that Nie Huaisang is dying from a curse, he is forced to confront his guilt toward Jin Guangyao's fate and the people his sworn brother hurt. Rec: I’d say this is a fandom classic, so you’ve probably read it already :D But, one of my favourite things about this story is the way it captures Nie Huaisang running away from emotions, and Lan Xichen being selfless when it comes to those he cares about. 6. gather jewels from graveyards by LuckyDiceKirby (~15k) Summary: Nie Huaisang stole happiness from Lan Xichen. He stole peace. If he could just see him, and see for himself exactly what he’s done, and know—that will be enough. Then he’ll be able to paint again, and his hands won’t shake as he does it, and he’ll remember why he ever in his life bothered to put brush to ink to paper. After all, a man should have to live with his mistakes. There is no other way to learn from them. His brother believed that. Rec: One of the first stories I read for this ship and so well done! This is one where Nie Huaisang feels very guilty, and who doesn’t enjoy reading that? Nie Huaisang comes to the Hanshi to make amends, and doesn’t go away when Lan Xichen won’t see him.

7. When the world is cold (I will feel a glow) by @marsdiogenes (~3k)

Summary: Xichen is trying very hard to get his crush to notice him, but gallery curator Nie Huaisang has a job to do and would appreciate it if Lan Xichen's beautiful face would stop for a moment so he can focus. Mingjue just wants to have a nice, quiet family dinner and for everyone to respect his efforts.

Rec: I don’t normally go for Modern AUs for this ship, but this was so fun and sexy! Also Nie Mingjue’s knowing reaction is :3 8. to embrace doubt by fensandmarshes, Fleetling, idendreams, medievalfantasyqueen, space_enjolras, sxnshot (blasphemyincarnate)

Summary: Five times people thought they understood Nie Huaisang + one time someone admitted they didn’t - a collaborative, semi-chronological character study of Nie Huaisang through other characters’ eyes. Rec: Okay, it’s technically not marked shippy, but you tell me that someone who thinks about Nie Huaisang the way Lan Xichen does in this story, in the chapter that’s from his pov can possibly not love him, and I won’t believe it. The lyrical prose is the best description in a paragraph I’ve ever read of Nie Huaisang.

9. Love of my life, I hate you by Ibijau (~126k) Summary: With Qishan Wen growing ever more powerful and menacing, QInghe Nie and Gusu Lan decide to cement a firm alliance between their sects through a marriage between their children. Lan Xichen and Nie Huaisang are less than thrilled to learn this, but nobody is asking for their opinion anyway Rec: At first, I wasn’t sold on Lan Xichen being so thoughtless in his treatment of Nie Huaisang as a child and mostly wanted to smack him, but damn if the later events don’t make up for it, make him grow up, and turn the tables around. :D This story is utterly satisfying to read, like one of those novels that give your Id everything you want, eventually. I love slow burn and this is that in spades! So much fun, I’ve re-read parts of it multiple times already.

Honourable mention: Ibijau has so many interesting XiSang stories, like the one where Jin Rusong survives and Nie Huaisang ends up raising him (Second Chances For First Time Villains), and the one where Lan Wangji and Nie Huaisang, both in love with someone else, make a marriage match and solve crimes together ( We can light a match and burn it down), the god!LXC AU, and many others. Check them out! And finally,

10. Chapter 95: LXC finds out about JGY and tells NHS, from MDZS short fics by nirejseki ( @robininthelabyrinth) (~1k) Summary: In that AU where LXC pretends to be LWJ and discovers NMJ's head, what if he went on a quest to put the body of his old friend together and along the way accidentally ran into NHS who's on the same mission. And they realize the other knows! Rec: Nirejseki writes a lot of great Nie brothers content, and this is one short story that can arguably turn into XiSang in the future. The possibilities of this AU make it so exciting, I had to include it on the list even though NHS and LXC only talk and nothing else happens. ...Okay, that was more than ten fics here, but can you blame me? 😍 I love these two together. And with the XiSang week running we have so much new stuff!
