Amazon’s financial shell game let it create an “impossible” monopoly

For the pro-monopoly crowd that absolutely dominated antitrust law from the Carter administration until 2020, Amazon presents a genuinely puzzling paradox: the company's monopoly power was never supposed to emerge, and if it did, it should have crumbled immediately.

Pro-monopoly economists embody Ely Devons's famous aphorism that "If economists wished to study the horse, they wouldn’t go and look at horses. They’d sit in their studies and say to themselves, ‘What would I do if I were a horse?’":

Rather than using the way the world actually works as their starting point for how to think about it, they build elaborate models out of abstract principles like "rational actors." The resulting mathematical models are so abstractly elegant that it's easy to forget that they're just imaginative exercises, disconnected from reality:

These models predicted that it would be impossible for Amazon to attain monopoly power. Even if they became a monopoly – in the sense of dominating sales of various kinds of goods – the company still wouldn't get monopoly power.

For example, if Amazon tried to take over a category by selling goods below cost ("predatory pricing"), then rivals could just wait until the company got tired of losing money and put prices back up, and then those rivals could go back to competing. And if Amazon tried to keep the loss-leader going indefinitely by "cross-subsidizing" the losses with high-margin profits from some other part of its business, rivals could sell those high margin goods at a lower margin, which would lure away Amazon customers and cut the supply lines for the price war it was fighting with its discounted products.

That's what the model predicted, but it's not what happened in the real world. In the real world, Amazon was able use its access to the capital markets to embark on scorched-earth predatory pricing campaigns. When diapers.com refused to sell out to Amazon, the company casually committed $100m to selling diapers below cost. Diapers.com went bust, Amazon bought it for pennies on the dollar and shut it down:

Investors got the message: don't compete with Amazon. They can remain predatory longer than you can remain solvent.

Now, not everyone shared the antitrust establishment's confidence that Amazon couldn't create a durable monopoly with market power. In 2017, Lina Khan – then a third year law student – published "Amazon's Antitrust Paradox," a landmark paper arguing that Amazon had all the tools it needed to amass monopoly power:

Today, Khan is chair of the FTC, and has brought a case against Amazon that builds on some of the theories from that paper. One outcome of that suit is an unprecedented look at Amazon's internal operations. But, as the Institute for Local Self-Reliance's Stacy Mitchell describes in a piece for The Atlantic, key pieces of information have been totally redacted in the court exhibits:

The most important missing datum: how much money Amazon makes from each of its lines of business. Amazon's own story is that it basically breaks even on its retail operation, and keeps the whole business afloat with profits from its AWS cloud computing division. This is an important narrative, because if it's true, then Amazon can't be forcing up retail prices, which is the crux of the FTC's case against the company.

Here's what we know for sure about Amazon's retail business. First: merchants can't live without Amazon. The majority of US households have Prime, and 90% of Prime households start their ecommerce searches on Amazon; if they find what they're looking for, they buy it and stop. Thus, merchants who don't sell on Amazon just don't sell. This is called "monopsony power" and it's a lot easier to maintain than monopoly power. For most manufacturers, a 10% overnight drop in sales is a catastrophe, so a retailer that commands even a 10% market-share can extract huge concessions from its suppliers. Amazon's share of most categories of goods is a lot higher than 10%!

What kind of monopsony power does Amazon wield? Well, for one thing, it is able to levy a huge tax on its sellers. Add up all the junk-fees Amazon charges its platform sellers and it comes out to 45-51%:

Competitive businesses just don't have 45% margins! No one can afford to kick that much back to Amazon. What is a merchant to do? Sell on Amazon and you lose money on every sale. Don't sell on Amazon and you don't get any business.

The only answer: raise prices on Amazon. After all, Prime customers – the majority of Amazon's retail business – don't shop for competitive prices. If Amazon wants a 45% vig, you can raise your Amazon prices by a third and just about break even.

But Amazon is wise to that: they have a "most favored nation" rule that punishes suppliers who sell goods more cheaply in rival stores, or even on their own site. The punishments vary, from banishing your products to page ten million of search-results to simply kicking you off the platform. With publishers, Amazon reserves the right to lower the prices they set when listing their books, to match the lowest price on the web, and paying publishers less for each sale.

That means that suppliers who sell on Amazon (which is anyone who wants to stay in business) have to dramatically hike their prices on Amazon, and when they do, they also have to hike their prices everywhere else (no wonder Prime customers don't bother to search elsewhere for a better deal!).

Now, Amazon says this is all wrong. That 45-51% vig they claim from business customers is barely enough to break even. The company's profits – they insist – come from selling AWS cloud service. The retail operation is just a public service they provide to us with cross-subsidy from those fat AWS margins.

This is a hell of a claim. Last year, Amazon raked in $130 billion in seller fees. In other words: they booked more revenue from junk fees than Bank of America made through its whole operation. Amazon's junk fees add up to more than all of Meta's revenues:

Amazon claims that none of this is profit – it's just covering their operating expenses. According to Amazon, its non-AWS units combined have a one percent profit margin.

Now, this is an eye-popping claim indeed. Amazon is a public company, which means that it has to make thorough quarterly and annual financial disclosures breaking down its profit and loss. You'd think that somewhere in those disclosures, we'd find some details.

You'd think so, but you'd be wrong. Amazon's disclosures do not break out profits and losses by segment. SEC rules actually require the company to make these per-segment disclosures:

That rule was enacted in 1966, out of concern that companies could use cross-subsidies to fund predatory pricing and other anticompetitive practices. But over the years, the SEC just…stopped enforcing the rule. Companies have "near total managerial discretion" to lump business units together and group their profits and losses in bloated, undifferentiated balance-sheet items:

As Mitchell points you, it's not just Amazon that flouts this rule. We don't know how much money Google makes on Youtube, or how much Apple makes from the App Store (Apple told a federal judge that this number doesn't exist). Warren Buffett – with significant interest in hundreds of companies across dozens of markets – only breaks out seven segments of profit-and-loss for Berkshire Hathaway.

Recall that there is one category of data from the FTC's antitrust case against Amazon that has been completely redacted. One guess which category that is! Yup, the profit-and-loss for its retail operation and other lines of business.

These redactions are the judge's fault, but the real fault lies with the SEC. Amazon is a public company. In exchange for access to the capital markets, it owes the public certain disclosures, which are set out in the SEC's rulebook. The SEC lets Amazon – and other gigantic companies – get away with a degree of secrecy that should disqualify it from offering stock to the public. As Mitchell says, SEC chairman Gary Gensler should adopt "new rules that more concretely define what qualifies as a segment and remove the discretion given to executives."

Amazon is the poster-child for monopoly run amok. As Yanis Varoufakis writes in Technofeudalism, Amazon has actually become a post-capitalist enterprise. Amazon doesn't make profits (money derived from selling goods); it makes rents (money charged to people who are seeking to make a profit):

Profits are the defining characteristic of a capitalist economy; rents are the defining characteristic of feudalism. Amazon looks like a bazaar where thousands of merchants offer goods for sale to the public, but look harder and you discover that all those stallholders are totally controlled by Amazon. Amazon decides what goods they can sell, how much they cost, and whether a customer ever sees them. And then Amazon takes $0.45-51 out of every dollar. Amazon's "marketplace" isn't like a flea market, it's more like the interconnected shops on Disneyland's Main Street, USA: the sign over the door might say "20th Century Music Company" or "Emporium," but they're all just one store, run by one company.

And because Amazon has so much control over its sellers, it is able to exercise power over its buyers. Amazon's search results push down the best deals on the platform and promote results from more expensive, lower-quality items whose sellers have paid a fortune for an "ad" (not really an ad, but rather the top spot in search listings):

This is "Amazon's pricing paradox." Amazon can claim that it offers low-priced, high-quality goods on the platform, but it makes $38b/year pushing those good deals way, way down in its search results. The top result for your Amazon search averages 29% more expensive than the best deal Amazon offers. Buy something from those first four spots and you'll pay a 25% premium. On average, you need to pick the seventeenth item on the search results page to get the best deal:

For 40 years, pro-monopoly economists claimed that it would be impossible for Amazon to attain monopoly power over buyers and sellers. Today, Amazon exercises that power so thoroughly that its junk-fee revenues alone exceed the total revenues of Bank of America. Amazon's story – that these fees barely stretch to covering its costs – assumes a nearly inconceivable level of credulity in its audience. Regrettably – for the human race – there is a cohort of senior, highly respected economists who possess this degree of credulity and more.

Of course, there's an easy way to settle the argument: Amazon could just comply with SEC regs and break out its P&L for its e-commerce operation. I assure you, they're not hiding this data because they think you'll be pleasantly surprised when they do and they don't want to spoil the moment.

Oscar's teenage crush on Lando - A study in Instagram likes

So... I did a thing... (yep, I miss Landoscar...and I have too much free time apparently).

Since 22/03/2013, Lando has posted 1768 posts on Instagram.

Oscar first likes appeared on the 21/12/2015.

Since then, Lando has poster 1652 posts.

And Oscar has liked 437 of them, which means he has liked 26.45% of Lando posts.

We can identify different eras :

2015-2016 : regular likes

2017-2018 : pure stalking with nearly every posts liked (apart from a period mid-2017)

2019-2022 : alternance between regular likes and droughts

from the end of 2022 : very regular posts

Other trends noted :

At the beginning, Oscar has liked some posts from Lando with other drivers. It has stopped recently.

“Max,” Daniel calls to him from the bedroom, just as he is rinsing the shampoo from his hair. Not wanting shampoo in his eyes or his mouth, Max keeps them all firmly shut.

“Baby?” Daniel says again, louder.

The warm water is a gentle relief running over his sweat sticky skin, nowhere near the scalding temperatures Daniel sets their shower to at home. It’s why Max had insisted that they clean off separately, the Austin heat far too much for Max to endure boiling water too, despite Daniel’s pouting and dramatic insistence that Max couldn’t just ‘fuck and flee.”

“Yes,” he calls when all the suds are safely sliding past his shoulders, but he didn’t need to shout. When he opens his eyes he sees Daniel leaning against the doorway with a smirk, still wearing his unbuttoned satin shirt, cowboy hat and nothing else. His wedding ring sits heavy on his finger, and Max thumbs over the matching one on his own hand.

Max’s come is a shiny presence he can still see smeared between Daniel’s thighs.

The sight of him makes Max’s dick twitch. Daniel notices and his grin only widens.

“Baby,” he says again, too sweet. “Baby, why is your most recent Google search is it weird that my husband saying yeehaw makes me come?”

Max makes a noncommittal noise because vaguely he does remember Daniel saying he needed to put it on charge. That was before Max started pawing at him the moment the hotel door shut behind them though, and then it had been forgotten by both of them.

There’s just the noise of the extractor fan whirring for a moment, but Daniel doesn’t move. When Max sneaks a glance at him, he’s still leaning against the door frame looking amused.

“Sooo.” He drawls out the word in the stupid Texas accent that Max wishes he didn’t find so strangely sexy. “Are we going to talk about this, little lady, or-“

“Nope,” Max says firmly, turning off the shower.

Daniel nods. It makes the lights of the bathroom catch on his chain and Max- Max really wants to fuck him again.

“What about the one below it?” He asks, “Daniel Ricciardo Austin 2023 photos?”

“Nope,” Max says again, stepping out of the shower and reaching for his towel. He’s smiling now too, because he knows that beneath Daniel’s teasing that one will have made him happy to see.

“Okay,” Daniel says, then he unlocks Max’s phone. “What about how to ask my husband to-“

“Daniel,” Max interrupts, taking the phone from his hand and putting it into the empty sink. “Do you want to read more of my internet history, or do you want to get back on the bed and play good cowboy, bad cowboy again?”

Daniel grins, takes the cowboy hat from his head and puts it onto Max’s. When his arms wind around Max, the silky fabric of his shirt presses cool against Max’s shower-warm skin, his nipples.

“Well, when you put it like that,” Daniel says, leaning in to put his mouth on the skin just beneath Max’s ear. “Yeehaw, baby.”

Max laughs and pinches Daniel’s ass, at the same time as his dick twitches again. Backing him out of the bathroom, towards the bed, his phone is forgotten in the bathroom.

You may submit as many hot men as you like but please submit only ONE ENTRANT per submission.

Do not hesitate to submit ANY hot guy you think may qualify, no matter how popular he is. There is no such thing as a shoo-in with these tournaments. If you think "Someone MUST have submitted him already!" Everyone else is probably thinking that too and then he may well NEVER get submitted and we don't want that.

Do not worry about how many submissions your hot guy might have had already--I need to get a sense of who the strongest contenders are in order to fairly seed the draws, and the best way to do that is volume of submissions.

We are voting on the hotness of the characters. While the actors who portray them are of course a major factor in this, we are not voting on the actors themselves, therefore propaganda pertaining to the actors real lives (aside from anecdotes relating to their portrayal of the character) is not admissible.

By that same token, in the case of historical figures (e.g. Henry VIII) we are judging hotness based on the fictionalized portrayals of them in these properties, not on historical fact.

They broke up due to difficulties in the perception of both sides.

ARCH ENEMY Plays First Concert With Guitarist JOEY CONCEPCION As Official Member (Video)

Rock'n Videos has uploaded video of ARCH ENEMY's April 24 concert at Musinsa Garage in Seoul, South Korea. The show was the first of ARCH ENEMY's 2024 Asian tour and marked the band's first live appearance in eight months.

Last December, ARCH ENEMY announced that it had "amicably" parted ways with longtime guitarist Jeff Loomis.

ARCH ENEMY founder and chief songwriter Michael Amott said in a statement: "It's been a joy having Jeff play with ARCH ENEMY for close to a decade, we truly had a blast touring around the world together! We were friends long before we played music together and we remain even closer buddies now, which feels great. We respect that he's in a place and time in life where he needs to step out of ARCH ENEMY and we all wish him nothing but the best moving forward.

"The only constant is change, and this is one of those moments where things had to change a little to move forward in a satisfactory way for everyone involved. With all that said, we are extremely pleased to announce that we have recruited Joey Concepcion as our new guitarist! Joey's a phenomenal talent and has been a friend of the band for a long time, he even filled in for Jeff on a couple of European festival shows back in 2018.

"We have touring and a myriad of other exciting things coming up on the horizon with ARCH ENEMY for 2024 and beyond and are thrilled to move forward, creating the next chapter and keeping the metal flowing!"

Loomis commented: "My time in ARCH ENEMY has come to an end. I have had a great time (9 years!) of playing and touring with them, but now it's time to enter a new chapter in my life. I wish Alissa, Michael, Sharlee and Daniel the very best and consider them all lifelong friends. I'd also like to thank the crew that have always been nothing but kind to me. Their hard work and dedication towards the band is incredible, and we wouldn't be able to put on the great shows without them. Thank you again for all your support over the years and Happy New Year."

Lastly, Joey Concepcion had the following to say about joining the ARCH ENEMY fold: "It's an honor and a privilege to be working with ARCH ENEMY and I'm very much looking forward to shredding stages across the globe together, playing for and meeting all the fans!"

Jeff, who was the main songwriter in his previous group, NEVERMORE, joined ARCH ENEMY in late 2014, but was not involved in the writing for the latter act's last two albums, 2017's "Will To Power" and 2022's "Deceivers".

In a 2018 interview with All That Shreds, Jeff said that he had "a lot of musical ideas" that he was hoping to contribute to ARCH ENEMY in the future. "I did write three or four songs for ['Will To Power'], but they didn't make it, only because it wasn't in the style that they were looking for," he said. "Fortunately enough, I was able to play guitar solos on the latest album, so that makes me happy."

Seven years ago, Amott said that Loomis is "a strong songwriter" in his own right, "but not in the style of ARCH ENEMY, I feel. He's always writing and recording with his own stuff," he explained. "He has a project called CONQUERING DYSTOPIA, he has his solo stuff, [and] he obviously wrote most of the NEVERMORE stuff. I've always respected him, and continue to respect him, as a guitar player — he's amazing and an amazing human being; he fits in perfectly. [There's] a great chemistry [between us]. But, you know, I've always written most of the music, so it's difficult to… I don't really wanna change the sound of the band too much. The band sort of started around my songwriting and my ideas, and those continue to be the most dominant ones, I guess. But, you know, who knows [what can happen] in the future?"

Loomis's second and latest solo album, 2012's "Plains Of Oblivion" was produced by Aaron Smith (7 HORNS 7 EYES) and featured cover artwork by Colin Marks of Rain Song Design, who had previously worked with ALL SHALL PERISH, THE END and XERATH.

Only 2 short shippy prompts all month! All 4 modern girls got a couple spotlights, various family cameos and backstories, a future prompt as is tradition, Zaine had a few posts, a few NPC-only scenes, a LOT of Endwalker, and even Ancient Icarus got a story, tying into 2021's "Destruct" prompt and how/why the siblings' souls have been connected through time and reincarnations.

A few of these are alternate takes on scenes I've touched on before, but it's interesting what a new prompt at a different time can get one to say, how we change as writers in what we focus on and how we say it.

This comes in roughly 300 words shorter than last year, at 18,493. The week of the 18-22 I had off work for my birthday, and that had the most 1k+ prompts, with a word count nearly double the other 3 full weeks. While the longer prompts are good, I'm really happy with how so many of the short ones turned out!

I was again trying to be realistic about my time, energy, not pushing free write days...and also working on an original writing project on the side, so I actually did do more writing over the month, just not FFXIV related!

(Also why some of my responses were in just under the wire...)

But this was a good break and exercise from that other writing, and let me try a few new things.

And comparing to earlier years--especially 2017 and 2018 when I was getting back onto the writing horse and feeling out my OCs--I feel like my growth as a writer, especially to be more succinct yet still evocative when needed, is evident. I've gotten a lot of practice in over time, and this challenge is one of the things that helped me get to where I can write an original story on top of my fanfic!

I didn't look at the totals until the end; I only checked some of the shorter ones during the challenge to see if they hit my personal "500+ words" cut off for adding a Read More to the posts.

"Grave" honestly could have been a lot shorter; I started the plot too early, and much as I like Zaine making one last visit to his childhood Nana, for the purposes of the challenge, I could have just focused on going to the lichyard to save myself time and energy, and wrote about the visit on my own another time. On the other hand, it's done now!

Not sure which is a favorite; there's a lot I like.

As usual, these will be revised at...some point (some more than others, probably) and added to Ao3, in my various series and threads.

Predictions for the Starlight Express 2024 Revival

At the time of me writing this (27/03/2024) the cast for the 2024 revival of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Starlight Express has just been revealed, and along with it much discussion and discourse within the Starlight Express community about what the new production will be like, including what songs will remain or have changed, and if any characters have been cut or replaced. So therefore, I have decided to present my predictions as to what the new production will be like, drawing on what we already know and what could be the case, especially since 1984 the way railways in the UK work have changed a lot, so the new production will have to reflect some of these changes, along with changes in what is appropriate or politically correct in modern day Britain.

Keep in mind these are my opinions and predictions and you are welcome to have different ones. Also this is only my predictions and my speculation, so do not take this as official, because it isn’t. For all I know the show could be completely different to what I’m describing. TAKE THESE PREDICTIONS WITH A PINCH OF SALT.

So without further ado, let's get into my predictions. We'll start with the characters, starting with the engines.

In terms of confirmed engine characters we have the main returning ones of Rusty, Greaseball, Electra and Momma. Greaseball seemingly has been gender-swapped, as he is being played by actress Al Knott in her professional debut, with Catherine Cornwall and Jessica Vaux as covers. I find this change actually really interesting, and it kinda fits with Rusty being male and Electra being non-binary, so there is now a varied representation of gender in the main cast of engines. It's also really refreshing to see a female antagonist like Greaseball, who isn't a villain because of any trauma or something like that, she's just a bad guy for bad guy's sake! I'm also glad Momma is making her way to the UK. Momma in Germany is such a fun character regardless of any actress playing her, and I cannot wait to see her in this new version.

Now let's talk about the other supporting engines. We currently have three new characters confirmed for this new show, these being Golden Eagle, Grey Wolf, Blue Horizon and Orange Flash. While at the moment we do not know what these characters will be, I predict these will be new engine characters, possibly as replacements for some of, if not all the National engines (e.g. Turnov, Brexit, Manga, etc) Why do I think this? Because of how the nationals are really rolling stereotypes. While this is less so nowadays, it cannot be denied that there are some elements of the Nationals that likely would not fly in modern Britain. Brexit for example will likely not be included, as public support for Brexit has only gotten less and less, especially because of the way the Conservative Party in the United Kingdom screwed up handling the pandemic, Andrew Lloyd Webber himself even withdrawing his support for the party in 2021. So I reckon an engine representing Brexit likely would not go down well. Turnov even more so, given the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022 and the ongoing war between the two countries. So I reckon that these new engines will be used to replace not just these two, but that all the National engines will be replaced, as that avoids any controversy. Golden Eagle, Grey Wolf and Orange Flash seem more like general names given to trains regardless of countries, so therefore avoiding controversy.

The coaches that have been announced are Pearl, Dinah, Belle and Tassita, who was introduced in the 2017 London Workshop but was never added to the cast in Bochum, her role being given to Carrie. Similar to Greaseball, Tassita's gender has also been changed, making her the first male coach in all of Starlight Express history. Tassita has confirmed to be being played by Renz Cardenas, with Pablo Gomez Jones and Charles Butcher as covers. Again, this is really interesting, and I'm super excited to see how they use Tassita. Something that would be really cool would be if Tassita was representing a transmasc carriage, which makes the message of I Am Me, about being on the same level as the engines, have a deeper meaning in his case. Furthermore, a new character called "Porter" has been confirmed. Initially I thought this could be a new freight character, however a railway porter's job was historically to help passengers on passenger trains, so this makes me think this new character could have something to do with the new passenger train.

Electra's components have mostly been confirmed to be returning, with Killerwatt, Wrench, Volta and Joule, so there isn't too much to say there. I reckon Electra and their components will pretty much be a copy and paste of their current use in Bochum, which I think works well.

Now we come to the freight train. I've saved this one to last in the character section, because I think this is what I have the most to say about. My first prediction is quite a big one, but I think it makes sense given the context of the modern world:

The Rockies will be replaced with new characters.

We already have two new freights confirmed with Lumber and Oil Slick. My bet is that Lumber is going to be a lumber wagon or log car, and Oil Slick will be an oil tanker car, and maybe Porter at a stretch, depending on if they'll be a part of the passenger or freight train. Regardless, I think the Rockies are going to be replaced. This is because the Rockies are boxcars, which on both British Railways and in America are no longer being used, or at least not as much as before. This is because the nature of how real freight trains work has changed since the 1980s. Nowadays instead of individual wagons freight and goods trains are now more often comprised of intermodial containers, as these can easily be transferred from a ship to a train and then a lorry without having to remove the goods from the container. Therefore, it's likely most more modern British audiences who aren't really interested in real railways or trains won't know what a boxcar is, so therefore replacing them with characters which are more clearly based on more general wagons, for example a tanker wagon or log wagon makes more sense.

Flat-Top I literally have no idea about. I don't see any reason why he wouldn't be in the revival, as there isn't really much that can go wrong with him, but I'm still not really sure with him. I feel similar towards Dustin. I don't see why he wouldn't be in the show, especially since hopper wagons used for carrying minerals and bulk commodities like stone or sand are still incredibly common, and are a common sight, so I don't really see any reason why they wouldn't be in the show. I do have one idea that could be the case: The Hip Hoppers return to replace the Rockies, and Lumber and Oil Slick replace Flat-Top and Dustin. That way they still have hopper characters while also adding new updated characters. Oil Slick could possibly be a new villain. They could cause oil slicks on the line and crash other engines.

CB/Caboose I have no idea about, but I fear he won't be in the show. Similar to the Rockies, modern British audiences will likely have no idea what a caboose or a brakevan is because they will never have seen one before, as brake vans aren't used anymore in the UK or America, so why keep a wagon no one knows much about in the show, unless they do something clever and make him cause accidents because he's outdated, I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Now for the songs. I reckon most of the songs will remain the same, however we don't really know about songs focused on or performed by certain characters. Freight is very likely going to be modified or changed or replaced with a new song to introduce the new characters. The Rap will likely have a new version, and songs like Wide Smile or Right Place, Right Time seem to be hanging in the balance because of what may or may not happen with the new characters.

It's very evident already that this Starlight Express will be nothing like the previous versions, and we shouldn't expect it to be a copy and paste of Bochum. This will be extremely different, so get ready.
