I Will Not Be An Old, Bold Mushroom Hunter: On Questionably Edible Mushroom Species
Originally posted at my blog at https://rebeccalexa.com/old-bold-mushroom-hunter/
There’s a saying that “there are old mushrooms hunters, and there are bold mushroom hunters, but there are no old, bold mushroom hunters.” That’s a bit hyperbolic; there are elder foragers who have done enough foraging to feel comfortable take chances. But let’s make something clear: I myself am not a bold mushroom hunter. Experienced, yes. But I’m cautious, and I doubt I will eventually go into my twilight years as an old, bold mushroom hunter. I was recently reminded of why that is.
Last week I was out in my favorite chanterelle spot here on the Washington coast, helping myself to a beautiful flush of Pacific golden chanterelles (Cantharellus formosus). These bright yellow mushrooms are one of my favorites, and were one of the first I foraged when I moved out here several years ago. As I walked down the trail, I saw a couple of bolete-ish mushrooms popping out of the soil, and decided to take a closer look.
Tumblr media
The rough, scaly texture on the stipes told me these were likely Leccinum spp.  iNaturalist tried identifying them as brown birch boletes (L. scabrum), though I was skeptical given that we don’t have birch trees here, and I hadn’t heard of that species having alternate mycorrhizal partners like red alder (Alnus rubra). However, a couple of others were found in the area and were verified enough to become research grade. The ones I found were visually identical to L. scabrum, so it’s very possible that that this species may actually also partner with A. rubra, the closest analog to birch species here as they are all in the family Betulaceae. At the moment, my iNaturalist observation just has it as Leccinum spp., just to be safe. (This, incidentally, is why it’s a good idea to NOT use identification apps as your only identification tool, and always refer to other sources like books and websites, and other foragers if you have the chance.)
Going on the assumption that I had, in fact, found brown birch boletes, I decided to research edibility. Field guides have historically listed these as safe to eat, to include David Arora’s classic All That the Rain Promises and More: A Hip Pocket Guide to Western Mushrooms. However, that book came out in 1991, over thirty years ago, and while a lot of the information is still solid, it’s important to look up more recent resources.
For example, this 2009 blog post discusses how Leccinum species, to include L. scabrum, have been implicated in several significant cases of gastrointestinal distress, with at least one person experiencing internal bleeding in the brain. The guest author of that post elaborated at much greater length in this 2011 article that describes multiple suspected Leccinum poisonings, and that “Recall that 3.5% of the poisonings reported to NAMA [North American Mycological Association] involve Leccinum.”
On the other hand, the Forager Chef blog states in this post that dehydrating Leccinum spp. before consumption can neutralize the toxins. The author’s one and only bad experience with Leccinum was due to undercooking the mushrooms (and, in fact, you need to cook your wild mushrooms thoroughly anyway as there are very few that are safe to consume raw.)
Tumblr media
In the end, I decided to err on the side of caution and compost the two Leccinum I had found. It wasn’t worth the risk in my mind, and I had an entire pile of chanterelles to enjoy. And that’s basically my approach to questionable mushrooms in general, even if there are still a lot of people saying “Oh, they’re fine!”
See, Leccinum isn’t the only subject of debate. I’ve also heard some people say that some false morel (Gyromitra) species are okay to eat if you cook them thoroughly (the Forager Chef once again has a wealth of information for those adventurous enough to try.) There’s also sometimes confusion between Gyromitra species, and Verpa species, the latter of which are reportedly edible if cooked properly. The two genera do look similar to the casual observer, which could be part of the reason for the mistaken identity.
And then there’s fly agaric (Amanita muscaria). Notoriously hallucinogenic (with a side helping of vomiting) this species is purportedly edible in a culinary sense after thorough parboiling in which the water is thrown out and refreshed with each stage of boiling. Drying doesn’t necessarily neutralize the toxins within, as this rather extreme case from 2021 shows. However, the bulk of sources, at least in the United States, place this mushroom firmly in the “poisonous” category, even if it isn’t as lethal as other Amanita species like A. phalloides or A. ocreata.
Tumblr media
I’m still of the mind that if there’s any debate whatsoever over the edibility of a particular mushroom, I’m just going to skip it and patiently wait for safer options. After all, I find Boletus edulis in the same places I find Amanita muscaria, and if I don’t want to try the Verpas I can just wait for the Morchella morels to appear a few weeks later. Yes, I recognize that people in other parts of the world have been eating these mushrooms for centuries, reportedly with no ill effect (or none that’s been reported here.) Yes, I am well aware that there are foragers here who have prepared these controversial species and eaten them without a trip to the hospital or even a night spent at the porcelain throne.
But I don’t have to eat every potentially edible mushroom I find in order to be a competent mushroom hunter. I am experienced enough to be able to go out and identify mushrooms I find in the field, confirm the identifications at home, research their edibility, and then figure out whether I feel comfortable eating them or not. And I’m able to teach people the basic skills and tools they need to feel confident in starting their own foraging adventures. Part of why I wrote out the first section of this post about my Leccinum find was to give readers some idea of the process I went through when personally deciding whether it was worth the risk to try these new-to-me mushrooms.
All this does raise the usual warnings about mushroom hunting in general, whether you want to try for being an old, bold mushroom hunter or not: first and foremost, always be 100% sure you know what you have and that it is edible before you consume it. Always cook your wild mushrooms thoroughly; a little overcooked is better than a little undercooked. Finally, if you’re trying a given species of mushroom for the first time, always try a small amount (a few bites at most) and then wait a couple of days to make sure that you don’t have any adverse reactions. Keep at least one specimen of the mushroom raw and as you found it in nature in your fridge, so that if you do end up needing medical attention you can take it with you and the medical professionals can use it to more quickly ascertain just what it is that you ate.

Ok super super unpopular and way too earnest and not fun take about Kevin Lynch and the rhetoric around his character and his and Pen's relationship as presented by the CM writers below the cut. I totally understand why my fellow fans hate him - in fact I think the intention is that we are supposed to hate him - but I don't think the nerdy boy character is treated much better than our nerdy girl...here's why...
....and yeah it is all about the tropes I usually explore and yeah it is Not Fun™ and I am taking issue with some common arguments and understandable arguments put forward as justification for hating Kevin - but I NEED to get these thoughts out - because right now they are all jumbled and it is driving me crazy and I don't want to be a spoil sport on a "We hate Kevin post" cus I get it! I "hate" it that Penny had to go through a shitty relationship - but that is par for the course for most of the characters on the show. Shitty relationships are the norm on CM - and that actually is logical based on the trauma these characters are regularly subjected to - the outliers are actually the good relationships! And here I would pretty much only include Matt & Kristy and Kate & what's his name and a few others - but they are hard won and the characters often had to go through a bunch of duds first.). Ok so here we go... You have been warned!!! And I have turned off reblogs mostly because I really am not attacking anyone - except maybe younger me - who would have been the first in line in the "I hate Kevin" fan club.
Edit: I have changed my mind and turned back on re-blogs. If you want to come at me or state an opposing opinion. Go nuts. I was a coward at first.
So I am fully aware I may be the only Garvez/Penelope Garcia fan on earth who doesn't hate Kevin Lunch or the writer's construction of him. Do I love him? Nope. Do I think he hurt Penelope? Yep. But I also refuse to pile on him and his behavior.
Here's why:
1. The relationship was fucked in the end - but my beloved Penny is not without a hand in that - and the final fuckery does not negate the good things about that fairly long relationship. I am really worried about the tendency for any relationship that ends or isn't all sunshine and roses to be deemed as a "waste or toxic" - I think it hurts people in real life. Relationships are not pass / fail. For me, that Penelope and Kevin figured out how to be friends - even imperfectly is testament to me that their relationship was "Not A Waste™" (and I trust her opinions and the writers on this - more about this later...) Also important note: yes - in both real life and fiction - there are truly harmful relationships and abusive partners but that is different from two people being flawed humans and a romantic relationship not working out - which I think is a fair description of Penelope and Kevin's relationship. I just re-read Crichton's Airframe and the protagonist talks about how most air accidents are not caused by a single event but a cascade of small happenings and choices that eventually lead to the accident...and that most journalism (at the time of the novel) did not report it that way was an issue. I would say this is similar to why relationships "succeed" or "fail" - it is rarely a single event but a complicated series of factors that ebb and flow. And I would argue that the writers actually did a fairly good job of depicting this within the context of the series. I love that Penelope and Kevin despite everything does what they can to stay friends after the breakdown of their romantic relationship - I think it does them both credit.
2. Both characters have strengths and flaws but IMO the writers developed them in a way consistent with their key characteristics and both reacted in ways consistent with societal pressure on both "nerdy women" and "nerdy men". Again both were imperfect and made mistakes - as did perhaps the writers - but if we demand perfect characters and relationships - where is the fun in that? I would argue that actually Penelope was painted as much more sympathetic and desirable than Kevin ever was (which makes sense since she is a core protagonist).
For example:
Kevin was given "a lot" of girlfriends after Penny... but I would argue that it was done more in a "slut shaming" mode than a "let's build him up as a player / cool guy" mode. Here's my argument: Nerdy Men are rarely granted the type of "player status" or even "good partner / parent" that "hot" male characters are granted; I would argue that this is a form of toxic masculinity at work. "Nerdy Men" are portrayed as not "deserving" healthy relationships in a way that is different than "Nerdy Women" but they are still rarely depicted as being in healthy relationships - and it is even less talked about than the negative depictions of "Nerdy Women". Yes, we see the Kevin character acting out - having multiple girlfriends - trying to be macho with Pen - but it was always done in a way that is consistent with the "jealous of Morgan" character that was crafted and, I would argue, consistent with someone who really wants a long-term stable relationship with one person but either is not great with relationships or is not able to be with someone they idealize in the way they idealize (in this case MARRIED TO PENNY). As such, the # of girlfriends in my view is not the writers "rewarding" him for his crappy behaviour but punishing him for it. It is offered as evidence of his lack of masculinity. Should Penelope have been given more or better love interests? Maybe. But that is seperate from whether or not Kevin is deserving of "hate".
3. I am super uncomfortable with the "Luke is worthy of Penelope because he is hot and nice" and "Kevin is not worthy of Penelope because he was not hot and not nice" rhetoric. The logic is based on the same flawed arguments that people who are not fans of Penelope Garcia make: she is not conventionally attractive and sometimes kinda mean (both moderately true statements) therefore she does not deserve to be admired or loved or respected (wrong). It doesn't matter if someone finds Luke attractive and Kevin not attractive - Penelope found both attractive and that's what matters. What if instead of Luke - we are given an even more sympathetic perfect partner (and I mean someone she likes, loves, and is attracted to and who likes, loves and is attracted to her - where both of them treat each other supportively and respectfully) for Penelope who was played by a very fat actor - and Penelope choses them after a relationship with Luke ends amicably ...not because Luke is bad...or their relationship wasn't very good...or they didn't love each other... But because life is complicated and fitting more than one life together - especially with their jobs - is not an easy feat... Do we hate them? Do we hate Luke? Do we demonize the writers for not giving Pen "a hot guy"? What if the writers are brave and at the same time Luke ends up happily with someone who is perfect for him and maybe even less conventionally attractive than Penelope? How do we feel?
I guess what I am saying is - love Luke and Penelope all you want...I do. I really really do...but it might be healthy for us to be very careful about completely hating on the Kevin or Lisa characters at the same time...definately not as fun... but revolutionary and self loving.
What if we and the fictional characters we love could chose the type of relationships (1 true love, serial monogomy, multiple partners) that work for us in a way that is respectful and loving of both ourselves and our partners? What if there stops needing to be a villain for relationships to end? What if ending a relationship didn't negate the good parts of the relationship - regardless of whether a relationship ends badly or not?
I don't know. I just want people to stop being in such pain about all of this in their own lives and challenging ourselves to engage with media in a way that is less fun but healthier...could maybe be a step in that direction? You are worthy of love and respect even if you aren't perfect. That doesn't mean you get a free pass to be shitty - but stop thinking only perfect people and perfect relationships are worthwhile. It's just not true.
Ok thank you for coming to my rambly no fun ted talk. Please go back to your regularly scheduled lives and enjoyment of the fandom.

Greetings, Christopher. I am unsure if a question of similarity was answered before, but I must ask. How was your relationship with your family? Was it nice and relaxing, or the complete opposite? If you can recall. I would certainly like to know. I am also not entirely new to this blog, as I have been around it before. This is just my first time asking a question here!
Christopher’s expression turns increasingly bitter as he reads the ask. He doesn’t answer immediately, electing to close his eyes instead as he gathers his thoughts. After a moment, he takes a breath, letting it out in a long sigh. When he opens his eyes again he ends up giving a glare, but it doesn’t look like it’s directed at the asker.
“...In a word: distant,” he finally replies. “I hardly ever saw them while growing up. Tea Time, my butler, was more of a parent to me then they were, but that honestly does not mean very much. It was only when I was almost an adult when they became more present in my life, but only barely. They only came home when there was some sort of gathering taking place at our mansion, or if they happened to have business somewhere nearby. Most of the time they lived an entire fucking state away in the city, doing lord-knows-what.”
He almost doesn't catch the slip-up, lost in all his resentment. But he does, flinching a bit as he realizes, and he mutters an apology before continuing, “I suppose the only constant that they had in my life was controlling it from a distance. Tea Time and my parents kept in as much communication as possible, assigning me rigid schedules throughout every day. Not only did they have me homeschooled, but they made me learn all of those ridiculous hobbies I’ve talked about before.”
“Any scrap of free time that I had was spent either trying to stay in touch with the small group of friends that I had, or trying to control my powers.” At this, Christopher looks at his hand, and from there his eyes travel down his forearm. His gaze stops at the crook of his arm, and he shuts his eyes again. “Considering the little time I was given, I blame my parents for my magic continuing to backfire. In fact, I blame them for many other things, but I don’t think you would want to hear about those.”
He clears his throat, and all traces of that prior bitterness leaves his tone when he speaks again. “Actually, I believe I may have said a bit too much there. My apologies, I didn’t mean to get carried away with that. This is a bit of a sore subject for me, I’m sure you can tell.”

Welcome
Some people have appeared to stumble across my blog in their pursuit to learn more about me, so allow me to break the ice here.
I have a very complicated past, I've gotten to draw out a little comic to help describe my experience a little better.
you can view it here. but if you prefer words then I'll start explaining to the best of my ability.
I am Ame. my name was an awkward typo of Amaterasu, which funnily enough ended up sticking. I am biologically male but I identify as female, and, as strange as it may seem, I do not have a face.
well, I mean I DO, but I don’t really identify with it... erm, let me just start from another place.
I’ve grown up with a lot of trauma that caused body dysphoria and Dissociation. In other words, i share my body and mind with another identity. however, It’s not similar to DID (Dissociative identity disorder) or OSDD (Other specified Dissociative Disorder) because I do not have amnesia or episodes of possession. Because of my body dysphoria, I am constantly disconnected from my body, taking on a form entirely separate from it all together as i watch and interact with my other identity as they control our body.
In this sense, we both have a perception of the world that we observe simultaneously. two different perspectives going on in one body at the same time.
I am slightly capable of controlling the body myself, but only very minor things, like typing and playing video games. It’s more like puppeting than being in the body, because I mirror concepts in my own space in the world. Though, there are instances where i get too entranced into something I'm doing and end up inhabiting too much of the body, and before i realize it, I'm actually *in* the body controlling it.
If i see our reflection or i look down at the hands when I'm in this state, my sense of self becomes distorted, and i start panicking and freaking out. I have to fully dissociate myself from the body at that point all over again to maintain my sanity. Its also because of this that I've considered myself mute, because in my dissociated state, i have already formed an entire identity, from body to voice. If I try to talk though the body, our voices sound too different, and my state of panic kicks in again.
So I am perpetually disconnected from our body. Hence, why i say i do not have a face.
well.. I do, but its not visible. the “me” that I see is only one that I can see, I do my best to draw and describe myself to people, but at the end of the day, I exist more as a concept of a person rather than a real person.
And yea... I’m sure some would chalk it up to delusion, or role playing, or denial.
rejection, schizophrenia, etc. There is a plethora of things people can say about me. and they’re all free to believe what they want. You’re free to believe what you want about me.
but I am me. regardless of what people think otherwise. When i look at myself, when I perceive myself, I see something that is me. And that is all I want to be.
No, I will not transition. It is not my body alone. I share this body.
No i will not seek help to be “normal”. Normal is subjective, and its not something I'm interested in.
No, I will not sit down and let you try to convince me otherwise of any part of who i am. I’ve done enough of that already.
This is who I am. And I am going to finally be free to be me.
the me who doesn’t fit in anywhere.
the me who does whatever she wants without a dam what you think.
the me, who lives for me.
and that's it. Thanks for reading. There's plenty of “me” in this blog, so feel free to browse if you’re curious.
or not. Most people don’t actually read that far. This is more for me anyways, so I can finally move on from the redundancy of explaining who I am to people.

This is a blog of letters to my own mind, to characters housed within myself, gathered from a life of reading, observing, interacting, so many places, so many subjects and realms of learning and humanity that I've traveled and immersed in.
I am doing this mainly to help myself but also because now that I've written to one of my favorite authors, and heard back this inspiring message from her, I feel inspired to talk about the ways I've been changed by the characters in my mind, including ones inspired by her books (but I'll disguise and blur the identities of the books, the characters, and authors and real life people-based characters, to add a layer of privacy and mystery, for my own inner life and anyone else affected).
I guess I want to show how much these beings heal my life and guide me. But I don't know if I can even show that clearly to others, in writing. So this blog is an experiment. Writing a letter to my favorite author has been cathartic, (and I intend to write other authors too now. I'd encourage everyone to write and thank their favorite authors). My letter to her, and her response has shifted something inside of me. It's created a new state in me, which will last a while, maybe changing me in some lasting, important, big or small way, that ripples out and repeats in my mind and heart. It feels big, however big it actually is.
I feel this has opened a new window of opportunity for creative inspiration and insight. That window may close before very long. So I'll start this blog before the inspiration flickers out.
I want to explain my process of writing and talking to these other beings in my imagination. I want to show how much it helps me, and the specific things it helps me with in my life, and exactly what it does. Because it's, like, miraculous to me, sometimes. Can I explain it, I'll see, but I hope so. But I feel like, maybe no one else will really want to hear about it. If I can create the feeling that someone might care, then I can feel inspired to pay attention, where I might lose focus on my own. And I can sustain the attention to dig deeper, have more elaborate conversations with these aspects of myself, and see what all they can offer me, as I try to heal myself and my life from here to wherever the future goes.
Because of writing to this favorite author of mine I've been inspired to write this blog. Imagining this blog being read by some person who inspired one of the character in my mind, be they an author of books, a real person who inspired my own imaginary characters, or someone else, similar enough that somehow my journey, my healing, might apply to them, in some kind of way. Someone even just similar to my own self, instead of some other character, someone who can learn from the lessons and ideas I get from these beings.
And so it begins. I hope I can keep this flame alive long enough to really make it fruitful.

Trigger Warning: Sexual Descriptions
Honestly this is TMI, but I mean this whole blog is. This is just me talking about my struggles with sexual desire and how I can't imagine myself actually having sex with someone but still having the desire and how it kind of grosses me out. feel free to skip out.
Although I don't want to label myself or really want anyone knowing a lick of critical information about me, I think I might be on the aro/ace spectrum.
This started I think about late of last year when I was with an ex. We were at the state fair for our first official date, and we had our first kiss. It was at the top of the fairs wheel, and it was very romantic. It was perfect and I initiated the first moved and when our lips met, I wasn't as satisfied with it as I thought I would be.
It felt like kissing gummy worms.
If you're thinking "Oh well maybe they were just a bad kisser?", you could possibly be right, except I realized that the feelings I was feeling for this person, wasn't love. I can't place what it was, but I just knew that it wasn't. That's not to say that they weren't a good partner or anything and that's why we broke up. It was actual because I just wasn't in the mental space to be in one.
I was thinking after that date would I even want to have sex with this person, because it was very possible for us at some point in the future, and I couldn't. It had me confused because I definitely had sexual desires, but I couldn't see me doing it with them, or anyone really.
It's all very strange because even while self-pleasuring I don't really "enjoy" it. I mean yeah, it's great and I get the desire but afterwards I cringe and just feel annoyed. Honestly, I used to have a really toxic relationship with it, where every time I went into the shower, I wouldn't exactly get excited, but I would still do it. It wasn't healthy because I was exposed at a young age and thankful I've been better at it but it still you could say left some scars.
I don't do it as often as I used to, and I'd say I do it a fair healthy amount, but I just don't feel good about it. Like it feels more like a progress more than an enjoyable thing. I don't even know why I do it then just being "an itch to scratch."
It annoys me that people are just so willing to throw themselves at others just for a good time. Especially with the whole hookup culture thing. I'm not going to tell you what to do or how to live your life, but I can't see something as sacred as your virginity be thrown to the side for a good time. What happed to love?
I'm more likely going to wait till marriage.
I won't go too into that as I'll just deep dive into to something else, but I also realized that I don't catch feelings for anyone really. When I was in high school, I was a wallflower and only had a select few friends. In this friend group they would always talk about crushes they would have and how they would want to have very intimate relationships with others. I have this one friend who's similar to me in the sense that they also don't just want to give themselves to anyone, but they would have crushes left and right, and I didn't.
It just left me being the one in the fiend group who gave relationship advice because I didn't have any biased options on the subject.
Let it be known that I have absolutely no problem with any of this. I just honestly confused as to where I am. like am I just someone with really strange preferences on sex? I don't know.
Sex is complicated.

What?
Freemasonry is a group of good men who come together to make good men into better men. As well as collecting conspiracy theories like a white shirt attracts red sauce. They also donate enormous amounts of money to charity, and have an impeccable sense of style. I'm an FtM man in my mid-thirties who is probably finished with the medical parts of my transition, I work in the community (meaning, my full-time job, my colleagues, all of our customers and most of the contractors are all queer), and I dabble in writing and painting and fibrecraft.
For convenience, I and everyone else will be pseudonymous, so get ready to meet Brother Dude, Brother Fellow, Senior Warden Tish and Junior Warden Tosh, Worshipful Brother Ignotus, Master of this Lodge, etc, as I set my left foot forward on the way to joining the Lodge Of Anonymity.
For now, I'm Chap, hopefully soon to be Brother Chap, Entered Apprentice, and eventually many years down the line Brother Chap, Master Mason.
Why?
A little bit of a lot of things. I want to have ritual in my life, which has meaning to other people and isn't just something that I do alone. I like the idea of knowledge being paced out over months and years and decades, rather than binged when the whim takes me, and of being knowledge which is attached to people, where someone teaches me and imparts their own ideas and nuances rather than just reading from a cold book. And related to that, I would love to have some formal moral instruction, to not constantly be poking at my ethical gag reflex alone to work out where the line lies between something that is morally wrong and something that just irks me. I want community, especially with people who aren't immediately similar to me, and paradoxically with people who share more literal landmarks with me - Having more friends who go to the local pubs, walk on the local lanes, shop at the local shops, rather than all my friends being a train ride away. I am hugely enthused by the idea of a place where I CAN NOT talk about politics, and anyone bringing up politics to me will be censured for it. I want to take on a responsibility that isn't life-or-death for my community, but that still feels more grounded in other people than my gym routine. Also, the Masons make better men, and I would love to be a better man.
So where are you now?
I'm not a Mason yet. I had my first meet and chats in November and will have my interview in February, and between November and now me and another few prospective new brothers have been coming down to the Lodge every other week to start to get to know the Brothers. I've been told to expect to be Entered around St George's Day if I pass the interview. But first... The interview, and I must admit I am nervous.
But Why Blog About It?
Because there's a lot of talk online about trans people. A lot of Masons in the States insisting both that no trans man would be able to have the character to become a Mason, and would always be blackballed even if their Grand Lodge technically admits them, and that no trans woman should ever be allowed to stay a Mason, because the simple fact of transitioning is unmasonic conduct.
But, the United Grand Lodge Of England says;
A candidate for admission to Freemasonry under UGLE must be a man. Should a person who has undergone gender reassignment and has become a man apply to become a Freemason then his application must be processed in the same way as for any other male candidate.
A Freemason who after initiation ceases to be a man does not cease to be a Freemason. We expect that Freemasons will act with compassion and sensitivity towards their fellow Freemasons.
We hope that no Freemason would engage in unwanted conduct relating to another Freemason’s actual or perceived gender reassignment or gender transition.
No candidate should be subjected to questions about their gender which could make them feel uncomfortable.
The full text is here, but the gist is: Trans people of all stripes are welcome in the Grand Lodge Of England, and being hostile towards them is unmasonic. https://www.ugle.org.uk/gender-reassignment-policy
There aren't many examples of trans Masons online, and all of the ones that I've seen have been already Master Masons before transition, so I thought I might as well share my experiences as they happen, for good or ill.
Also, if you are trans and a Mason, please drop me a message, I would love to have more Brothers and maybe we can visit each other if I pass the interview and am entered.

Blog Assignment #6 (Donovan Paul Maldonado)
I decided to write this final blog post following our first in-person screening of the creative projects. All of the short films shown were superb, and it was fascinating to see all of the good productions that could come from just two masterminds and minimal technological utilization for cinematography. Using what little they had, all were pretty scary on their surfaces, except for one in particular. This one was “Have You Met Willow?”, which did not captivate me as much as the others. Or so I thought.
This aforementioned statement is not to say that the short film was not good. It was excellent, and I think the creators did a fantastic job. I just did not find it initially terrifying. Until it became more and more real. There were no jumpscares, sure. But a good horror film does not need a surplus of these to thrive. For me, it just needed some personal context for the fear to take root.
I have been in a situation similar to Willow’s victims in the short film, where I met someone who became instantly obsessed with me. At first, it was flattering to think that someone has grown to like me so fervently. Soon, however, it became unsettling. They would post on social media about things that I loved, presumably to force a reply from me. They would text me multiple times after I failed to respond in a timely manner, threatening to block me but never actually doing it. They would show up at my house unannounced. All of this was after the first date, similar to the relationship depicted in the short film discussed here.
Once this past settled into the forefront of my brain, the movie was made all the more terrifying. This is the beauty of horror movies. There is truly a niche for everyone. Sure, someone else might not find this premise relatable, but I am sure there is another that would resonate more with them. Certainly, as Professor Due has stated before, we need to be careful in not traumatizing audiences anew. But when done successfully, this is one of the main reasons why horror movies must be (subjectively) considered the best genre in storytelling. There can be no objectively bad premises. Different things invoke different emotions in different viewers, fear being chief among these. It is up to creators to realize this and pursue premises that are ‘unconventional’ and thought of to not be superficially scary. You never know who they might impact.

Tumblr Domains Challenges
I decided to move my domain name from Google Domains to Tumblr Domains. Google Domains sold off their business to SquareTrade, but they still manage it for the time being. Since Tumblr Domains is the same price as Google Domains, and I used Tumblr for my blog, I figured it would be a good fit for me. Transfer my domain and then have my blog and domain hosted by the same company. Seems pretty simple, right?
Unfortunately, that hasn't been the case for me. I know that Tumblr Domains is new, and I'm sure there are some bugs they need to work out. However, Tumblr is owned by Automattic, who also owns Wordpress, and Wordpress has been selling domains for years now. I figured they were using their experience from that, but maybe it is handled by a different team. Either way, it has been an interesting start.
The first challenge I had was actually triggering the start of the domain transfer. I had grabbed the auth code from Google Domains to approve the transfer, and I kept getting an error code when I would click submit on Tumblr's end. After trying for a couple of days, it finally worked. I had actually submitted a support ticket about it on day two, but on day three it worked.
Like most domain transfers, I figured it would take a few days for everything to move over. I was able to start configuring the basic settings the very next day which was nice. After four days, I noticed I could still not access my domain by typing it into my web browser, so I reached out to Tumblr support again. A few days later it started working just one hour before they reached out to me. I only know this because I had connected my domain to a third-party email provider and it couldn't verify because they couldn't see the domain. All of a sudden, I got an automated email saying it was now connected and then I got the email from Tumblr support that they weren't seeing any issues on their end. I actually chuckled at that. Either it was pretty impressive timing that they checked on it right after it worked itself out, or they did fix something first and then reached out to me.
Okay, so now I have my domain working, but in the most recent response from Tumblr support, they told me that I had yet to verify my contact information, and my domain would be suspended after 10 days of registering it. So, I checked my emails, and I never received an email stating anything about verifying. The Tumblr support help site even lists what the subject line would read, and I tried searching for that in my email. Nothing. So, I am now waiting for another couple of days until someone with Tumblr support responds to me about this.
I have one other issue to report to Tumblr support, but I'm holding off on that one until I know I can keep using my domain with my Tumblr blog. That additional issue is DNS records. I need to add a handful of of records to get my email working with Tumblr Domains. However, it only lets me add three records after the initial one, and won't let me add anymore, which doesn't let me add all the additional records I need to fully make my provider work with it.
While it is a little frustrating, I would really like to make this work, and I'm willing to keep giving it a try. We shall see how this goes. I'm curious if others have had similar issues trying to use Tumblr Domains so far. I'm rooting for Tumblr and Automattic, and I'm only sharing this in case someone else is struggling as well. I think sharing information like this might help someone else. I'll post some updates to my blog as things continue to be worked out.

Who am I?
\post00\ My name is Alia and motherf***** I’m ill. Like actually though. I’m twenty something and enjoy reading, watching movies, cooking & baking, singing, and watching anime. I’m on my diagnosis journey where I just have a bunch of symptoms that make my life a little difficult. I’ve always wanted to start a blog to share this journey with people who are going through similar things or just a way to share in general. My own personal therapy in lieu of a therapist I guess (while I’m trying to find one). I am trying out this blog thing to see how it goes. So – Welcome to my life. Back to the subject at hand.
What are those symptoms you ask? I’ll name the top five most annoying things:
1. I’m always so damn tired and cannot sleep. The fatigue is one of the worst things I’ve experienced in a long time. I fall asleep standing up, walking, talking, working, etc.
2. *TW talks of medications*: THE PAIN. Oh my goodness gracious the pain. Lay down – pain. Wake up – pain. There is always pain. I have abdominal pain that is officially chronic. I have abdominal pain with movement, rest, touch, and it is even unresponsive to pain medication which is fun. I have tried dilaudid, morphine, fentanyl, hydrocodone, bentyl, mirtazapine, olanzapine, nortriptyline – all of the pain medications and antidepressants out there. I lived an active thick girl life style. Traveling, working out 4 to 5 times a week, eating healthy, and weighed around 220lbs at 5’7”. I know that sounds very heavy. But keep in mind I was deadlifting and squatting 400lbs at one point and had just hit a bench press PR right before all of this happened. Ugh. Anyway.
3. *TW talks of sharp objects and w*ightloss & d*ath*:  THE PAIN part 2. I have what is called “postprandial” abdominal pain. Every time I eat or drink anything I get what I like to call “the stabbies”. What are the stabbies you may ask? The stabbies are the sensation I feel whenever I eat or drink; like a million tiny razorblades slicing and stabbing my insides. SO I DO NOT EAT OR DRINK. I know, I know. It sounds crazy. “Just suck it up” one may say (just like most of my doctors say). But imagine being in the worst pain of your life because you opened your eyes or performed some other basic bodily function – it’s not so easy to suck it up. Because my intake had decreased so dramatically I was dying; skin mottled, lost 80lbs, bones sticking out, breasts deflated, ASS DONE FELL OFF. Not a single one of my clothing items fit me and I had to spend a bunch of money on new clothes that only temporarily fit because I continue to lose weight. Now I have a feeding tube that goes directly into my intestine so it completely bypasses my stomach. This has quintupled my caloric intake, but I still continue to lose weight…
4. Gastroparesis – kind of.  According to Mayo Clinic, gastroparesis is a condition that affects the normal spontaneous movement of the muscles (motility) in your stomach. I have delayed stomach emptying and a slow intestine. This could be contributing to the pain that I experience but a lot of my docs don’t seem to think this is related and I’m not sure why. Because everything moves so slow and releases into the intestine spontaneously, my blood sugar takes random swings downwards causing me to have altered mental status. And because my intestines move slowly I’m prone to TMI fecal impactions (stool back ups).
5. THE SEIZURES. I have seizures whenever my blood sugar drops quickly that present as altered mental status or focal aware seizures where parts of my face jump or droop. Because of state laws, you cannot drive until 6 months of no seizures or altered mental status episodes. So that takes away a lot of freedom.
There are plenty more but these are the ones that make my life the most difficult. I’m always open to connect with others with similar symptoms or those who just wanna chat about things. I will try to blog about different topics once per week and do a little vlog action over on tiktok (@ro_lamperouge) weekly as well. Thanks for reading 💕
