It is 1485, you are a master stonemason in the city of Venice. Europe is at war. What else is new. Down the street, some weirdo named Leonardo is drawing blueprints for flying machines. You were essentially trained from birth in the art of stonecutting. The knowledge in your head keeps the crops watered, fortresses upright, and the streets clean of filth. As such, your knowledge is very, very valuable. You need to exchange knowledge with other masons but you can’t just publish all your secrets in a book, no sir. If every two-bit stonecutter learned your techniques it would put your job security in jeopardy. What you need is a nice, secluded place where you can talk shop with your peers. Maybe you could form a sort of society, one that regularly meets in secret. Somewhere all the masons like you would be free from prying eyes.  The Freemasons are a magical society in the same way that Yoko Ono was a Beatle. They should not, by definition, be here, but their influence is widespread, and to omit them would be a bat to the kneecaps of any good history of magic. The freemasons are a square peg in the round hole of magical history. Many occult historians have tried to roughly hammer them into place, only to find themselves lost in the swamps of mythical pseudohistory.

Prince of Jerusalem 16° Morals and Dogma
Part VIII This, Freemasonry teaches, as a great Truth; a great moral landmark, that ought to guide the course of all mankind. It teaches its toiling children that the scene of their daily life is all spiritual, that the very implements of their toil, the fabrics they weave, the merchandise they barter, are designed for spiritual ends; that so believing, their daily lot may be to them a sphere for the noblest improvement. That which we do in our intervals of relaxation, our church-going, and our book-reading, are especially designed to prepare our minds for the action of Life. We are to hear and read and meditate, that we may act well; and the action of Life is itself the great field for spiritual improvement. There is no task of industry or business, in field or forest, on the wharf or the ship’s deck, in the office or the exchange, but has spiritual ends. There is no care or cross of our daily labor, but was especially ordained to nurture in us patience, calmness, resolution, perseverance, gentleness, disinterestedness, magnanimity. Nor is there any tool or implement of toil, but is a part of the great spiritual instrumentality.

The new document signed by Pope Francis and DDF Prefect Cardinal Victor Fernández was written in response to a bishop from the Philippines who had expressed concern at the growing number of Catholics in his diocese who are taking part in Freemasonry and asked for suggestions for how to respond pastorally. The dicastery’s response, dated Nov. 13, calls for “a coordinated strategy” involving all of the bishops in the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines to promote catechesis “in all parishes regarding the reasons for the irreconcilability between the Catholic faith and Freemasonry.” The Freemasons are the largest worldwide oath-bound secret society. Freemasonry promotes ideas and rituals incompatible with the Catholic faith, including indifferentism, or the position that a person can be equally pleasing to God while remaining in any religion, and a deistic concept of a “Great Architect of the Universe.” The Vatican document reaffirms that “those who are formally and knowingly enrolled in Masonic Lodges and have embraced Masonic principles” fall under the provisions of the Catholic Church’s 1983 “Declaration on Masonic Associations.” The 1983 declaration, signed by Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger when he was prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, declares that Catholics who enroll in Masonic associations “are in a state of grave sin and may not receive holy Communion.”

We all not only have better intimations, but are capable of better things than we know. The pressure of some great emergency would develop in us powers, beyond the worldly bias of our spirits; and Heaven so deals with us, from time to time, as to call forth those better things, There is hardly a family in the world so selfish, but that, if one in it were doomed to die–one, to be selected by the others,–it would be utterly impossible for its members, parents and children, to choose out that victim; but that each would say, “I will die; but I cannot choose.” And in how many, if that dire extremity had come, would not one and another step forth, freed from the vile meshes of ordinary selfishness, and say, like the Roman father and son, “Let the blow fall on me!” There are greater and better things in us all, than the world takes account of, or than we take note of; if we would but find them out. And it is one part of our Masonic culture to find these traits of power and sublime devotion, to revive these faded impressions of generosity and self-sacrifice, the almost squandered bequests of God’s love and kindness to our souls; and to induce us to yield ourselves to their guidance and control.
