Nico and Percy's dynamic through the series is eternally funny to me, because it's just. like.

Percy's having a constant mental struggle between his fatal flaw of loyalty with a promise he made to Bianca to protect Nico, versus his Big 3 kid desire to maim other Big 3 kids / Poseidon descendant urge to totally maim Nico specifically. He hates Nico so so much. He thinks Nico's annoying and weird at best, and creepy/sketchy when he's older. The only positive thoughts Percy has towards Nico are "He's Bianca's brother and Bianca was my friend and I owe her/He's Hazel's brother and Hazel is my friend and would kill me if I was mean to him," "He's a powerful asset and useful ally (if questionable)," and "He's kinda pathetic and I feel maybe a little bad about it." Percy has multiple occasions throughout the series where he strongly considers - and on one occasionally actually goes through with - throttling Nico.

Meanwhile, Nico is following around Percy like a lost puppy. He explicitly can never bring himself to even dislike anything about Percy no matter how hard he tries. He has a whole bit in BoO where he's mentally going "UGH he's so stupid BUT IT'S ENDEARING HOW DARE HE." He's totally smitten. He's making deals with his dad for Percy. He's making convoluted plans to help Percy stand a chance against Kronos. During the entirety of BoTL it's like he's playing tsundere - "I'm helping NOT PERCY SPECIFICALLY with this quest! Me helping Percy would be SILLY because I DEFINITELY HATE HIM." Then he proceeds to show up to Percy's birthday party to basically ask him on a weird date and spend the entire next book scrambling around trying to help him or protect him or impress him. And Percy could not give less of a shit.

Just. That dynamic is so funny to me. Percy is the founder of the Nico Protection Club in that he's the one they're all protecting Nico from and meanwhile Nico is throwing himself at Percy to the point where the literal god of gay love calls him out on it.

I’m one of those people that lived and breathed the Percy Jackson books when I was younger and therefore regularly forgets that not everyone has read it as a kid

OKAY who wants to hear about why i think nimona challenges amatonormativity? you do! 🫵

one of the main ways this is accomplished is through ballister and ambrosius’s relationship. it’s arguable that it doesn’t necessarily fit the traditional model of romance - not only are they a queer interracial couple, and not only is their relationship ambiguous in the book, but there are certain instances, especially in the movie, that subvert traditional ideas of romance and friendship.

one instance that really stands out to me is when the director asks ambrosius what’s on his mind and he goes on his imagined rant about how arm-chopping isn’t a love language - you know the one. when he mentions ballister, he refers to him as “the man i love, my best friend.” and not just one or the other, but both! the man i love, and my best friend. he places equal emphasis on both the romantic and platonic aspects of the relationship, valuing ballister in both a romantic context and a platonic context without treating either one as more important than the other.

and even moments such as the first “i love you” and the kiss manage to subvert tradition. both of these things are generally seen as a pretty big deal, especially in fiction - if the characters are kissing or saying “i love you,” it’s usually a moment in which everything changes. a line is drawn, dividing the story into after and now. sometimes it’s dramatic and climactic, with fireworks and a swell of music, but even when it isn’t it’s still seen as a turning point of sorts. now it’s official, now it’s real. but this isn’t the case in nimona. both moments are certainly significant - they do a good job of showcasing the character development and where ballister and ambrosius are on their respective journeys, and are certainly important in terms of representation - but neither one follows the path that most fictional romance does.

another way in which nimona challenges amatonormativity would be the emphasis on friendship! in the tavern scene (in the movie) when ambrosius suggests killing nimona, ballister disagrees and says “she’s my friend.” ambrosius replies with “aren’t i more than that?”, implying he’s more important than a friend - thus upholding amatonormative ideas. ballister becomes angry at that and leaves - challenging this idea and prioritizing his platonic relationship with nimona over his romantic one with ambrosius, as nimona is the one he wants to defend.

additionally, a big part of this scene is the way ballister deliberately rejects institute values while ambrosius unintentionally upholds them. and because the story challenges homophobia and transphobia (and other forms of bigotry) through the lens of the institute, it would make sense for it to challenge amatonormativity too! it’s something that’s become incredibly normalized, to the point that lots of people don’t even know it exists, and this is reminiscent of the institute brainwashing, especially when it comes to ambrosius - he’s been manipulated his whole life and probably genuinely doesn’t understand the level to which he’s internalized institute beliefs.

ballister prioritizes nimona many times, actually. when he tells ambrosius she’s “smart, kind, and quite sophisticated,” when he’s overjoyed to see her again at the end, when he refuses to kill her and saves her instead. over and over, he proves how much he cares about her, even when this involves directly going against what ambrosius wants - which, of course, is really what the institute wants. a core tenant of amatonormativity is the false notion that romantic relationships are more important or valuable than other types of relationships, but ballister actively goes against this!

to conclude, as a story that at its core is about identity and challenging societal beliefs, nimona defies expectations and traditional ideas of what it should or shouldn’t be. it’s possible that amatonormativity wasn’t what the creators had in mind, but the story still manages to challenge it with grace and elegance. just like its main character, nimona refuses to conform to what others want it to be.

Cherry Mocha

You’d been really upset lately. Your period had snuck up on you and ruined a perfectly good sundress that’d you’d just purchased. And now, to top it all off, it was a rainy misty day that really only added to the atmosphere. You’d actively chosen to hole yourself up in your room that afternoon after spending the morning downstairs watching a terribly-narrated true crime documentary with a couple of your classmates. After that you went up and settled in amongst you duvet covers and huffed in discomfort as you scrolled through your phone. Your wrist jingled with the new bracelet that Katsuki had gifted you for your birthday. It was a pretty solid rose gold that complimented your skin and, on Katsuki’s birthday which was less than a week after yours, he procured a matching necklace chain that matched yours — except of course, yours had a little gold K.

The bracelet made you smile as you focused in on your freshly manicured hands which sported a fresh new color called cherry mocha, which glimmered the same color of Katsuki’s eyes in the sunlight. Katsuki had gone out with the boys this morning and you’d already texted once to ask if he’d pick up more ibuprofen for you on the way back and he’d already liked your message indicating that he’d pick some up for you. So whilst waiting, you took seized the rare opportunity of silence in the dorm to call your mother and check-in on your dog who’d recently gone to the vet and come back with a cone — a cone which seemed to exasperate your parents with a great sense of frustration and humor. After a nice phone call back home you sat around and awkwardly petted one of your stuffed animals that you placed in your lap to alleviate the cramps as you sat curled up in a fetal position.

At some point or another you must’ve dozed off because you awoke to rapt knuckles at your door and your phone buzzing away. Blearily your brain put together the pieces as you saw your boyfriends caller ID blinking up at you. You shouted, “It’s open, come in.” Immediately regretting the decision as you coughed a little your voice still recovering from sleep. Your boyfriend quickly threw open the door pill bottle in hand, “Took you damn long enough. I got your meds on the way back, if you need anything else just lemme know. I can run out and grab it for ya’”

You nodded, stretching your arms above your head as Katsuki placed the pill bottle down on the nightstand next to your near empty water bottle. You watched as he made a frown and silently picked it up and turned on his foot and exited the room with more carpeted thuds. A few minutes later he was back and you happily took your meds waiting for them to kick in. He sat on the edge of the bed. “Do y’need anything else?” He asked rubbing circles absent-mindedly on your knee. you shook your head, “no, I don’t need anything else right now, but I might want something . . .” you murmmered, eyes flickering over to the book on your nightstand. You tried to read it earlier but the migraine you’d been battling all day made it difficult to keep your eyes focused for too long even just to read a couple of lines.

It seemed Katsuki noticed how you glanced over and he lightly tapped your leg as he stood up reading your mind, “okay, scoot over. If I’m gonna read I ought to be comfy.” Although he practically grunted out the sentence, you happily shifted over more and helped hold up the blankets as he moved in beside you. You immediately closed your arm back over his torso and rested your head on his chest as he flicked open the book to the page you’d left on last. Katsuki was an excellent reader — oddly devoted to the characters and invested in the plot, as well as giving out random commentary and pausing at the right moments — as you both heaved a sigh at secondhand embarrassment or whatever overwhelming sense that took over from the characters actions. So you sat the rest of the afternoon sharing sips of your water bottle with Katsuki as he flipped the crisp pages of the new book in the series you were reading. And your eyes flicked from his ruby reds that were scanning the pages, to the cherry mocha of your nails, to thinking of the similiar and slightly ironic shade of blood that you were leaking right now.

You know, I feel like Kratos forgetting Calliope’s song was a wee bit harsh on the part of the writers.

I think his explanation of how he would’ve given up everything for a few moments more with his daughter, but when he met Faye, found the world worth living in again, would’ve been enough. Imo that illustrates his journey well in of itself.

To add onto that that when he found his new family, he could no longer recall Calliope’s song (played on the flute he made for her)…I dunno, it doesn’t make me think, ‘oh look at Kratos’s growth and development’ as I’m sure the writers intended. I understand the symbolism they were aiming for, but honestly it just made me sad

It’d be different if he was struggling to remember just due to the passing of time, but the fact he says he forgets it specifically after meeting Faye changes the meaning imo.

Kratos could remember his daughter’s song - presumably her favourite, that she played often, if it stuck in his memory - just because he loves her. To remember doesn’t intrinsically mean he’s haunted by it. memories of, and a love for, his Grecian family isn’t inherently negative, or something that has to be ‘let go of’ for him to progress as a character.
