alright! let’s get this review done with!

is the novel a clichés minefield? yes! if you go on google and search “chosen one” archetype tropes; you’ll get list responses with all the characteristics associated with that archetype and you’ll realize that the author probably printed one of them and went to town with green marker checking all them off!

mc comes from prestigious family that makes them popular/puts a target on their back? ✅

mc gets in to school against all odds? ✅

mc has cool sidekicks that help them persevere against instant rivals? ✅

mc has a badass animal companion? ✅✅ (yes, this bitch got two dragons!)

mc unlocks/possess a long forgotten (but coveted) powers? ✅

is it worth the hype? kinda, it depends on you, your taste, and your mood! i personally think that most “hyped” books aren’t worth it; but some are definitely entertaining!

is it entertaining? YES!!! (TO ME!!) i am currently going through a rough depressive episode and this book actually provided me with a much needed reprieve from my own thoughts. and now i got a new dragon world and lore to add to my maladaptive daydream catalogue for future scenarios!! 😌😁

in all seriousness, i really enjoyed the lore and the creation myth behind this world. i especially liked that the info-dumping of these tidbits was done through the chapter header quotations or violet rattling off to de-stress! also i’m not a big fan of flower-y fancy adult “high fantasy” language, it usually leaves me confused and wandering so i quite liked the simple, straightforward language and writing style the author chose to use.

i wish there was much to talk about plot-wise but as i pointed out above, the entire novel is literally just one “chosen one” trope after the other. thus, if you’re a big fantasy reader you’ll predict every twist and turn chapters ahead. but again, this didn’t hinder me from enjoying the story.

as for the characters; most of them were very one-dimensional and very caricature-y. i hope the hype doesn’t go into the author’s head and she works on fleshing them out in the next books. for instance, i would love a deeper exploration of the complex mother-daughter (children in fact) relationship between the general and violet. also as person who lives with chronic pain i’d be happy to see a layered exposition of how violet reconciles her “fragile” body with her new position as a dragon rider. also i hope that in the next books rhianonn is more than the black (poc) best friend who furthers the mc’s arc, and ridoc is more than just the class clown with a heart of gold; and i hope xaden gets a personality beyond a hot body, a charming smirk, and smoke (shadow) works!

overall, the story lacks much substance when it comes to plot and characters (hopefully that will change going forward) but still the lore and myths, as well as the action are compelling enough and very entertaining!

nb: i listened to the audiobook while reading this novel, and i must note that the first 15 chapters or so were disturbing to listen to as it was obvious that the narrator was battening a cold/flu and her breath intakes and stops were triggered my sensory issues! beyond that the narration was quite good at the end and the narrator played out those scenes very well.

ps: can the author please provide an e-version of the continent’s map like she did for the school!!! I need it!!

Thank you! I'm so sorry this took me 80 years to get to. It's been a crazy few weeks.

🧠 Pick a character, and I'll tell you my favorite headcanon for them.

Oh man, for both of them? I think I've touched on this before, but in my head (where they both survived, haha) I headcanon neither of them leave Hawkins as quickly as they want. I like the thought that Chrissy is close with her brother, and doesn't have it in her to leave him behind with their mother, and I think with the rest of Corroded Coffin being a year or so younger than Eddie that they'd tour over the summer, but when school went back, Eddie would find himself in a shitkicker job around Hawkins, either at the plant his uncle works at or in a diner or bar kitchen.

I like the thought that it's in that sprawling year after graduation, when their worlds were both so much bigger and so much smaller, without the pressures of social hierarchies and finals and games, that their tentative friendship became something real, something warm, something that firmed beneath their feet and made them feel - - god, just feel. An ease neither of them had ever known before, and they both know there's a spark, knows the other feels it, but the future is uncertain and neither are good at living for the moment, and this friendship they've built just feels too important to risk. And so a year of almosts ends with a sigh of what could have been as Corroded Coffin on tour without an end date and Chrissy helping her brother finish middle school and they call. Of course they call, on pay phones from truck stops and the town hall where Chrissy's started teaching dance classes to girls younger than she ever remembers being, but it gets harder to keep up with one another, and when he's home for Thanksgiving, Chrissy's visiting friends in Boston, and when he's back visiting his uncle the following year, Chrissy's not there at all.

Her dad had passed, is what Robin tells him later, and her mom had moved Chrissy and her brother out East to California, and Eddie waits for her call, but one doesn't come, and he figures that's that. Figures that's how life is - a revolving door of people and moments and opportunities - and he's back on the road and the years pass in a blur, and Corroded Coffin books a few good tours as a support act, and it's sudden when it happens. A single that inches up the charts and explodes on alternative radio, and suddenly his life is everything he wanted, and yeah, he dates, fucks around, has one or two real girlfriends, but he never forgets her crooked teeth, or the way she saw him suddenly, brightly, honestly, when no one saw him at all.

And he's twenty-eight when it happens. They're at an awards show - some bullshit one that he doesn't even care about, and he's backstage talking shit with Gareth when some pop starlet he barely recognises scurries past towards a pack of dancers waiting in the wings, and he just - - he hears her laugh. That honey drop of a sound, and his eyes scan over the girls in their parachute pants and tank tops (because come on, it's the 90s), but Chrissy's not with them, she's crouched down beside one who has her pants half off, is taping up the girl's knee (and she's what, a physio? a sports therapist now?), and she looks nothing like he remembers and everything like he remembers, and briefly his heart seems to stick in his throat.

He peers around Gareth, and Chrissy glances up, her eyes warm and her face prettier than it has any right to be and she just waves at him. Like she'd seen him already, because of course she had, and Eddie's getting grabbed by a stage hand and whisked away and it's all he can do to yell over his shoulder and he means to say don't leave before we can talk, but what comes out is: "Don't leave without me this time, okay?" and he could kick himself, only later he's playing his set, and he looks sideways into the wings, and she's there again, standing up and watching, grinning, and when she catches his eye, she mouths I won't. She mouths I'm waiting for you. She mouths Hi.

Part II, Day 81.

My wife: Also a designer!

“It started when the high school jazz band director didn’t pick me to go on the band trip to Japan,” she said.

Careers have winding paths, and hers is a bit more wind-y than some. We share that in common (says the guy that started in radio.)

She didn’t get picked to go on that band trip, so she quit the band the following year and took an art class instead. She found a love for art in that class. So much so that she joined the art club and took a trip from her hometown in Iowa to Chicago to visit The Art Institute of Chicago. (She also met me in Chicago, also on a trip from an Iowa town.)

That fall she started college as a biology major, with science as her other passion. We both transferred to a different university after one semester to study and spend time together. She took the opportunity to shift her major to art history.

Like so many other art history majors, she soon realized that one of the main career paths for an art history major is teaching, which she didn’t really want to do. The world of interior design was calling: - Practical application of art skills like color, line, proportion, and texture? ✅ - Problem solving through design? ✅ - Career opportunities? ✅

That art history major morphed into a minor while she wrapped up her degree in interior design. Her class was the last one to learn drafting on a drafting table with ink and vellum before moving entirely to computer-aided drafting (CAD) programs. Those manual drafting tools still float around here, somewhere.

(We share that, too; my class was the last class to learn how to edit audio using tape and a razor blade. Now it’s all taught in the digital realm.)

Then it was off to the real world, where, like many of us, she started at a very entry-level gig doing data-entry work. Roles changed, duties became more design-oriented, and her expertise grew.

Now she’s a nationally-known expert in her field, focusing on sustainable, movable wall systems used in office, healthcare, and education settings. Commercial interior design was a good fit, even if biology is now relegated to hobby status.

It’s great to have another designer in the house, as we both tackle things with a design thinking mindset. You should see our home improvement project documentation. Plus, she gets to keep me confused as I peer over her shoulder as she works on files that look like the one in this image. (!)
