COMPETITION #1— BREAK THE ICE
˖  ݁ . ࿓ You'd do anything to be an Olympic champion - anything. And if that means having to get along with your insufferable figure skating partner, oikawa tooru, you're willing to give it a try.
[figure skater !oikawa x figure skater! reader]
COMPETITION #2— LESS THAN ZERO
˖  ݁ . ࿓ Never would you have guessed that the one to lift the insane weight of the pressure off your shoulders would be an opponent’s coach, iwaizumi hajime.
[coach! iwaizumi x snowboarder! reader]
COMPETITION #3 — JEALOUSY JEALOUSY
˖  ݁ . ࿓ You can’t help but feel jealous of your childhood friend suna rintarō’s rankings in competitions despite his obvious disinterest in the sport, when you’ve been doing your absolute best, with little to no results.
[snowboarder! suna x snowboarder! reader]
COMPETITION #4 — CAN’T YOU SEE ME?
˖  ݁ . ࿓ You’ve always been a fan of the freestyle skier atsumu miya. So when you learn that you’re assigned to his delegation as an OG staff, you’re over the moon. It’s a shame he doesn’t notice you, though.
[freestyle skier! atsumu x staff! reader]
COMPETITION #5 — COLD SHOULDER
˖  ݁ . ࿓ Your boyfriend, osamu miya, has very obviously been a train wreck lately, due to his upcoming hockey matches. It’s clearly just another rough patch in your relationship you need to overcome, but you’re not sure you can do it.
[hockey player! osamu x reader]

does ryoumen sukuna is simp??? (what got lost in translation in ch.9 and ch.118)
yes, yes he does (but here’s an overanalysis why:)
you see there was a callback to ch.9 in ch.118 that got lost in translation
when i first read the manga in english i missed it, so i thought i’d share just so everyone knows how highkey sukuna’s simping is (this is sukufushi btw)
this is from ch.9:
Tumblr media
the context is that megumi is fighting sukuna; nothing too out of place here
but in japanese:
Tumblr media
if we only look at what is pronounced what sukuna is saying is “show me (what you’ve got)!! fushiguro megumi!!” (hence the english translation “entertain me”)
normally when shounen manga says “show me (what you’ve got)” it is with the phrase “見せてみろ (misete miro)” , literally meaning “let me see”
but here sukuna replaces “見” with the kanji “魅”: the pronunciation is the same (mi), but whereas “見” means “see” and the phrase “show me (what you’ve got)” is very common, “魅” means to  “bewitch”, “fascinate”, “enchant”, or “charm” (translation taken from wikitionary), and the phrase “魅せてみろ” (“bewitch me”) is virtually never used because why would it ever be used like bro you’re coming on way too strong tone it down a little
anyway so the dude is literally yelling “bewitch me!! fushiguro megumi!!” in megumi’s face (in fact the chinese translation is somewhere along the lines of “make me fall for you!! fushiguro megumi!!” which i think is neat but that’s beside the point)
but because it is pronounced like “let me see”, and “bewitch me” is a very rare phrase (it’s not in the dictionaries i think), megumi interprets it as “show me (what you’ve got)”; he never knows what sukuna really means and honestly someone should write a miscommunication fic about it
but then it gets even better:
Tumblr media
this is from ch.118 (so SPOILER ALERT for the shibuya arc):
megumi has summoned his strongest shikigami (it’s basically self-destruct but with a more complicated procedure) and is currently out cold and dying; the only known way to save megumi is to defeat said strongest shikigami, which is precisely what sukuna is doing here
pause, rewind—some background info for this scene: in ch.9 (at the end of megumi’s fight with sukuna, when megumi is desperate) megumi tries to summon his strongest shikigami, i.e. he wants to self-destruct and take sukuna out with him—hence why he says the things about how he never once regretted saving yuuji—but yuuji comes back (and promptly fucking dies) so sukuna never learns in ch.9 that megumi wants to self-destruct to kill him
but here in ch.118, megumi has summoned that strongest shikigami, and sukuna approves of its strength, saying “if it was me from that time, it may have been able to defeat me”—if megumi had summoned the strongest shikigami in ch.9, sukuna might have lost
basically: sukuna is really fucking impressed (cf. ch.9, where he tells megumi to "show me (what you've got)!!" or “bewitch me!!”)
you see, in the second-to-last panel with the hands, sukuna says “you showed me the way... fushiguro megumi!” which is not necessarily an inaccurate translation, but the callback gets lost in translation
look at the raw scan:
Tumblr media
in the panel with the hands, once again we have the very rare phrase of “魅せて” (“bewitch”) but this time with past/present perfect tense
if we only look at what is pronounced, in ch.9 we have “show me (what you’ve got)!!”—and here in ch.118 we have “you have shown me (what you’ve got)... fushiguro megumi!!” but looking at the rare phrase with the kanji “bewitch”, in ch.9 we have "bewitch me!! fushiguro megumi!!"—and here in ch.118, sukuna is saying “you have bewitched me... fushiguro megumi!!”
in ch.9, sukuna sees potential, and he demands that megumi exercises it to "bewitch him", while in ch.118, sukuna sees that megumi has actualised his potential to the fullest, and sukuna is, as promised, "bewitched"; considering the role sukuna plays in megumi's big breakthrough with domain expansion, sukuna's line in ch.9 is both encouragement and prophecy, and given that this is only their second time meeting (if you could call it that, seeing as megumi's unconscious) megumi and his powers are strangely significant to sukuna, so much so that he becomes "bewitched" over it and voluntarily fights the shikigami to save megumi
tbh however you look at sukuna’s dialogue it’s a nice little callback to ch.9, and it would be so interesting to see what akutami gege does with sukuna's fascination with megumi moving forward; as of ch.138, yuuji has already noticed it, and is actively questioning sukuna's motives
my personal take on this is that while sukuna's interest in megumi is most likely incredibly selfish, it is by no means impersonal: the specific choice of the word "bewitch" demands that megumi impresses sukuna subjectively—it is not the general "get stronger", but a personal "bewitch me", with the focus being taken away from megumi's powers to sukuna's personal feeling (even though the two are definitely linked); if (when) sukuna uses or manipulates megumi in the future, his focus won't be solely on megumi's powers, simply because he is personally invested to some extent; and even though i'm sure this isn't where the series is headed, i would love to see any potential conflicts between sukuna's selfish interest in megumi's powers and his personal investment in megumi
the entire plot with sukuna in shibuya is some really really—and i cannot stress this enough—really fucked-up shit, and i'm sure whatever he is planning to do with megumi it won't be fluffy and wholesome either, but at the same time im endlessly entertained by the idea of sukuna being the megumi simp to end all megumi simps so there’s that

For the flower ask 🌻 🌸 🌹~ Baneberries, basket of gold, begonia, borage, camelia, california poppy, cardinal flower, cyclamen, daisy, lupine, rosemallows, tulip, wisteria <3
That is one gigantic bouquet! Much appreciated!
°˖✧◝(⁰▿⁰)◜✧˖°
Baneberries: Favorite song?
If you put a gun to my head and made me pick The One True Song on pain on death, I would do it, but I would also be shot dead as the answer would be inaccurate. I have to list five…(The English titles are my translations, not official titles.)
1) 美丽的神话 – 韩红&孙楠 Beautiful Legend – Han Hong & Sun Nan
This is what love sounds like. A powerful song with a reincarnation element. Intensely romantic, undying dedication, a dash of imagination.
Excerpt from lyrics (my translation):
Your tears turn into butterflies dancing across the sky
Love is the wind beneath their wings, two hearts freely flying after one another
2) 归处 – 周深 Place To Return To – Zhou Shen
Gently caressing, unwavering loyalty. Even though the character in the song is still trying to reach the person they love, there is a sense of being settled and at ease, because their heart has already found its home.
Excerpt from lyrics (my translation):
With no fear of disappointment and no hopelessness, I wish to watch over you and protect you my entire life
Even if I can only gaze at you from afar
3) 紫 – 蔡健雅 Purple/Violet – Tanya Chua
Wistful, tragic love. (I think of this song as a classic fit for Shen Jiu and Yue Qi from SVSSS. I wrote my translation of the choruses in the end notes of a qijiu fic ^_^)
Excerpt from lyrics (my translation):
We were too late to bid proper farewells
What remains is only a thread of memory
It cannot bind a long, sorrowful romance
But it winds around my soul and leads my dreams
Hazily, I meet you once again
4) 一花一剑 – 李鑫一 One Flower, One Sword – Li Xinyi
A song from the TGCF animation. Lavish lyrics + catchy melody.
Excerpt from lyrics (my translation):
In the direction we are heading, we do not speak of the past that once bloomed riotously, brocade-like
The hellfires are spent; with one flower and one sword, for one lifetime, I walk with you
5) 魑魅魍魉 – 茶理理 Ghouls and Demons – Chalili
Catchy and fast-paced. Action and fantasy. There seems to be a story about powerful sisters behind it.
Excerpt from lyrics (my translation):
The twin flower that dies has a different way of living on
Basket of Gold: Describe your family.
Every day we nag and annoy/disgust/disappoint each other, but we’re surviving <3
Begonia: Favorite color?
I can’t choose one…I like pastels.
Borage: Give a random fact about your childhood.
I wanted to bin my sister.
So far, she has not been binned (yet).
Camellia: If you could visit anywhere, where would you want to go?
Allow me to go a little nuts with escapism…
Does anywhere really mean anywhere? Visiting in tourist fashion, i.e., typically no suffering involved? If so, I choose: some glorious xianxia fantasyland (hence, the no-suffering condition is important). Miles of peach blossoms, charming architecture, colourful bustling markets and festivals, picturesque canal towns and soaring mountains, flowy attire, and magic!
California Poppy: Height?
Been a long, long time since I measured that. Shorter than my sister, for sure, as I am afflicted by the Elder Sibling Curse.
Cardinal Flower: Do you believe in ghosts?
Same as the way I view the existence of god; I’m “agnostic” and wish to remain that way thanks no need to prove it to me ’cause I’ll get scared! I read horror novels and get scared sometimes. But then I read the news and get scared (of climate change and inflation), and I get unnecessarily forced into the office by my boss during a pandemic and also feel scared…Such events put things into perspective.
Sidetracking very far away: some time ago I saw a tweet asking how f*cked you’d be if you transmigrated into a cultivation novel and got the fantasy equivalent of your job. I would be a blind vengeful ghost who expired after reviewing one too many sect rules. Would haunt my boss and be at high risk of getting snuffed out like a candle by some capitalist exorcist. Need…more…power…
Cyclamen: Did you have a favorite stuffed animal as a child? What was it?
It was…a mammal (the specifics have been redacted because I’m paranoid). Sometimes I put it in the narrow gap between my pillow and the headboard. It kept getting removed. Then I found out it was my mum who did the removing, because I was an anxious kid with a lot of negativity on my mind and my mum thought maybe, just maybe, it was partly due to an old wives’ tale/feng shui thing saying that if you put stuff above your head when you sleep, it will weigh on you.
Daisy: What do you feel is your greatest accomplishment?
Thought really hard about this. Mulled over several answers; small things, bigger things, introspective things, timorous things (wasted a colossal amount of time considering this option), but none of them fit the bill perfectly. I’ll go with a standard kind of answer: I got into and graduated from a good uni.
The best is yet to come, though
ᕙ( •̀ ᗜ •́ )ᕗ
Lupine: What does your name mean? Why is that your name?
I’m paranoid so I won’t say the whole meaning, but I’ll say: it has a heart in it <3 Don’t know if there’s any specific reason why my parents chose that as my name.
Rosemallows: What’s your favorite memory?
…Lolling around enjoying shots of bliss from danmei books…
On a related note, I read my first danmei book, MDZS, during exam period (years ago). Very memorable stress relief.
Tulip: What would be the best present to get you?
· Realistically and practicably? -> I thought very hard, but I don’t know. Pretty things spark joy but tend to unnecessarily waste resources (an act I am not super keen to promote because I want Earth to last, at the very very very least, long enough for me and the people I care about to die of old age. Sidetrack: I am never going to have kids because one, I’m not interested, and two, I can’t guarantee a bright future for them on this planet that we’re murdering.) Boring but useful things are less wasteful but don’t spark excitement.
· Unrealistically? -> Tickets to some xianxia fantasyland, please, on the condition that the tour will not involve suffering (as mentioned in the Camellia section above).
· Even more unrealistically? -> I want the key to free me from my capitalist shackles—I want a weekend with no work~
Wisteria: How many books have you read in the past few months? What were they called?
Ah, you asked this question very deliberately, thank you for your care in selecting it!
Not counting books I abandoned and short stories that are less memorable, I finished 4 danmei books and 1 non-danmei short story in the first half of the year.
Notes:
· Danmei novels often consist of more than a hundred chapters; the longest ones I’ve read (not this year though) contain more than 300. So I’ve read a decent amount ^_^ (Would’ve read more, if I weren’t so irritatingly picky. I frequently drop books that don’t sustain my interest.)
· As always, I must warn that danmei titles tend to be bizarre and not accurate reflections of how good or bad the books are.
· The English titles below are my translations.
· I read the works in Mandarin.
Here are the books I finished reading and enjoyed:
👨‍🏫 他们都说我遇到了鬼 They All Say I Encountered Ghosts by 青色羽翼 Qingse Yuyi/Green Wings
· Read this if you’re looking for a funny reverse-horror story—a human terrifying the ghosts.
🥼 全世界都在等我们分手 The Whole World Is Waiting For Us To Break Up by 不是风动 Bushi Fengdong/Not The Wind Moving
· Read this if you want to read about sciency academia (not 100% factually accurate) and a “cool cat” guy VS a rather-dominating-almost-domineering-but-actually-devoted-and-in-denial guy
· (I recommend this book, but less enthusiastically than I recommend the others)
👻 今天我又被迫复活 Today I Am Forcefully Resurrected Again by 阿辞姑娘 A Ci Gu Niang/Miss A-Ci
· Read this if you’re looking for horror + a bit of humour!
🎬 跨界演员 Crossover Actor by 北南 Beinan/North-South
· Read this if you’re looking for a story in a realistic, completely non-fantasy setting. Dumb dog actor VS clever cat scriptwriter. Social anxiety disorder.
Here’s the non-danmei short story I read and enjoyed:
👁 目杀师 Master of the Killer’s Gaze by 袁依楣 Yuan Yimei
· Read this if you’re looking for a brief but thrilling ride.
For more details, please see my post on danmei book recommendations + mini reviews! All the works above have been added to the post, except Crossover Actor, which I will be adding soon.
This year, I haven’t found any books that have totally blown me off my feet, i.e., books that will make me reshuffle my personal Top 3 list/expand the said list. The pool of excellent danmei books seems to be shrinking as I finish/skip more and more of the acclaimed novels.

notes n warnings ❅ *: figure skater! oikawa toorū x fem! figure skater! reader, mentions of diets and bad eating habits, this took a long time i’m sorry I literally wrote this while I was having a ton of exams, I hope the pacing is fine I feel like it’s a little too fast :( wc 5.3k
part one of snowflakes are kisses from heaven series
“WINNING IS FIRST PLACE, EVERYTHING ELSE IS LOSING”
The sentence keeps replaying in your head like a mantra, and you feel like you’re being suffocated. You were supposed to be able to master this routine. It’s nothing you haven’t encountered before, and the media portrayed you as a young, headstrong skater who succeeded in everything she undertook. So why couldn’t you do it? You’re the best. You’ve got titles and medals other skaters could only dream of having. At the very least, you used to be the best, because it just so seems that your best doesn’t cut it anymore. Soon enough, your previous achievements will be worth nothing, and your trophies will catch dust. So when your partner’s comments came flying at you, you feel as if they’re the straw that broke the camel. “Seriously? A toe loop made you fall?” Oikawa turns his head towards your choreographer, and snickers, “Looks like the program’s going to need a few changes after all.”
You had both been skating together for 7 years. Somehow, in 7 years, Oikawa hadn’t managed to be any less insufferable than he was when your coach introduced you both to each other.
The front door creeks open, and you turn around at the speed of light. ‘Mrs Coach’, as you used to call her, is holding a boy’s wrist, dragging him further into the training center. The boy himself didn’t look like he was too keen on entering the place, seemingly upset. He couldn’t be more than 14. That’s already pretty old to me, you cringe, I’m only twelve.
He looks down at you, eyebrow raised. “I’m supposed to skate with her? How old even is this kid ?” You feel your cheeks redden. Kid? Did he just actually call you that? Was your coach really about to let this slide? Surely not.
“She’s twelve, that’s only a two year age gap, there’s worse out there. And for the record, this is just a test to see if you guys work well together. You can keep your hopes up for a little while.” You can hear a hint of amusement in her voice, turning her back on you to walk towards the rink. “Let’s get going! I have a feeling you two’ll be a great match.”
Next to you, Oikawa grumbles.
-
Whatever your coach saw in you two, you didn’t. You kept bickering for the entire time, and you couldn’t manage anything more difficult than a few jumps in unison and a bad lift. Truth be told, the latter still makes you blush when thinking about it. As his despisable as his personality is, you couldn’t deny his looks. So when he lifted you in the air, you felt like you were about to explode. Your little twelve-year-old-heart could only take so much.
“You guys are truly great together, I was right. You’ll see, with more training, you two will make it to the Olympics!”
Your eyes sparkle at your coach’s outburst. The Olympics... You’d do anything to get there. And a grumpy teenage boy in the middle of a teenagehood crisis was certainly not about to stop you.
“Yeah, well, the Olympics aren’t worth it if I’m not competing in men’s singles. So feel free to do your best or whatever, but this isn’t what I signed up for.” The brow haired boy says crudely. Your coach’s smile visibly faints and you direct your eyes at him, ready to blow a fuse. “It’s not what I signed up for either. My dream was in the Ladie’s singles, but that’s not possible. The thing is, when I was handed another opportunity, I took it. Because to you, I’m only twelve and ‘still a kid’, but in the meantime, I don’t take things for granted, and work hard, no matter the conditions. Maybe you should try that some time. It shouldn’t be too hard, since you’re supposedly two years older than me.” You feel your partner’s eyes narrowing at you in embarrassment, but before he gets to get anything more than a small ‘smartass’, your coach intervenes.
“(Y/n), it’s fine. You both have done enough for today. I’m sure this all comes from pent up frustration, the bad blood will disolve quickly enough.”
Oh, if only she knew.
-
Ticked off, you hit the ice with your fist, and get back on your feet. You grit your teeth, and mumble a “Mind your business”, to which he answers with a scoff. You turn your head to face your coach with a disgruntled expression, in a desperate attempt to get Oikawa to keep his mouth shut, but she only shrugs and you brace yourself for the worst. If you could mostly handle Tooru’s remarks (keyword: mostly), the coach’s were different. She closes her eyes, and you can hear her voice echoing throughout the rink, “Look, you guys are young. Not too long ago, you both were competing for junior competitions. But this,” she points towards the countless medals and trophies you two had won over the years in the glass shelf, “Is over. You are about to head to Beijing to compete against athletes who are just as good, if not much better, than you. You cannot keep this up. The bantering off the ice is slowly transposing itself onto your chemistry while performing. Keep it up and the judges will notice this, and you’ll come back home without any medal at all. The basis of pair figure skating is the chemistry. If you lose it, you lose everything else. ” Her scolding ends, and you clench your fists. You hate that she has to say this. You hate that even your coach is willing to admit that you both aren’t doing enough to stand a chance. You hate that you know she’s right. You hate that you know Oikawa is right. At the very least, had you fallen while attempting a 4A, you would still be viewed as respectable by the public, and by the judges. But you hadn’t, and instead, the people around you would start despising you.
This isn’t fair, you think, I’ve worked harder than anyone else to be here! Your cheeks redden, and you can feel your eyes getting watery. “Stop crying, we gotta get back to the routine.” You notice that Oikawa’s tone has lost some of it’s initial glee, and you’re reassured to know you’re not the only one that has been affected by your coach’s harsh words. Oikawa skates back to the middle of the rink, waiting for you to finish sniffling like a child who has had her lollipop taken away from her.
The noise of a locker being harshly closed fills the empty changing rooms and makes you flinch. The rest of the training session did not go as smoothly as planned, even after your coach’s complaints. A sigh escapes your lips. While he could still blame everyone else for all the mishaps on the ice, you couldn’t. You only had yourself. Never had you been this discouraged, and ready to give up. Worst of all, you cannot seem to quell your inner turmoil, because everything you do seems to give it right, and feeds it, until you can’t control it anymore. You want to disappear. Sure, you’ve never gotten along with your partner, but you’d never go as far as ruin his dreams along with yours, even after what he said a few years back. A tired voice pulls you from your intrusive thoughts. “Get up, loser. I need to close the changing rooms tonight, and I want to go home,” as if the first sentence wasn’t already enough, he adds, “And I’d be damned if you were the one to keep me here longer than I have to.” Nevermind. Maybe you would be fine tearing his dreams apart after all. “Coming.” You mumble. You don’t have the energy to banter anymore today.
As you two leave the rink, an unexpected question leaves Oikawa’s mouth. “What’s up with you today ?” You don’t miss the slight edge to his voice, but answer regardless. “I don’t know-” “You don’t know?” He angrily interrupts you, “Your little problems might cause us to not even get close to the podium at the Olympics but you don’t know?” His anger is legitimate. You can’t just not know when the stakes are this high. It’s ridiculous. You know you’re in the wrong, but you get defensive either way. “I’m sorry, since when were you even rometely interested in going to Olympics ? Last time I checked, you were doing minimal effort because ‘your dream was in the men’s singles’. I’ve been working my ass off since we met. So don’t you start bitching. I worked so fucking hard, and despite it all, you were always behind me, waiting to fuck it all up. You couldn’t even count on your fingers how many problems I have to deal with- “
“Yeah, okay. Just get this fixed before the Olympics.” With that, he just walks away, and you can’t help the sobs that are bubbling up your throat. You want to scream. You’re gripping the straps of your bag so hard you might leave a permanent imprint on your fingers. And in this very moment, you’re considering letting your anger take you over. But, you know better. It’s for the coach, you try to calm yourself down, for the Olympics.
You hope that tonight will help you rest. Despite all your problems flying around your head, you still had a flight to Beijing to catch tomorrow.
-
You were wrong. If anything, this night brought you even more problems than you already had. You hadn’t been able to close a single eye for the entire time, for if you did, your mind would go wandering to back to your doubts and you would start feeling anxious again. Nothing seemed to calm you down. Not even the silence of the plane, or the cheap laughing backtrack of the movie you were currently watching. “Would you like anything to eat ?” The hostess comes up to you. You consider getting the nice salad for a moment. Knowing eating won’t help can’t stop me from trying, you think, and in a heartbeat, you find yourself ordering one of the salads that had caught your eye on the flimsy menu. Unfortunately for you, your coach passes by at the same time as your meal’s arrival, and while she doesn’t say anything explicitly, the look she shoots you says everything you might need to know. It’s on you. You’re supposed to be on a strict diet, and indulge a strict amount of calories each day, nothing more, nothing less. Just enough to propulse yourself into the air, and just enough to keep gliding on the ice at a good speed. Just as you reflect on your bad eating habits, the coach comes back, just as you feared.
“I know you’re stressed.” She starts, it’s a dead giveaway of the theme of the conversation you’re about to have, which makes you audibly sigh, “But you’re a skater. You signed up for it. The least you could do is have the strength to go through it, both physically and mentally. You’re no different than all the people that you are competing against. You’ve got the same skills, the same elements to work with.” Your chest tightens, and you look away. Your coach resumes nevertheless, “But you two have something special, something that only a very limited number of skaters still possess at your level.” She points to you, “this something, is passion. And, yes, Oikawa does have it. Even if he yearns for a spot in he men’s singles, he still has passion for what he’s doing right now, even if you don’t see it. Your competitors could only dream of having that. You want to skate, they have to. There’s a big difference. The only thing is, to showcase your passion to the best of your ability, you have to make amends with Oikawa,” You open your mouth in protest, before your coach speaks up again, “this isn’t an option. It’s necessary. If you want to win the Olympics, that is. You can start right now by the way, I believe he’s in the cabin right next to yours.” With that, she walks away, leaving you speechless. After yesterday’s fiasco, the last thing you want to do is talk to him. But this isn’t about doing what you want, but about what you have to do, you think, and open your cabin door, alright. Good luck to me.
You move, and knock on Oikawa’s cabin’s door. “Yeah ?” A horse voice answers to the dry knocking, and it’s deepness makes your whole body tingle. “I- um. It’s me.” The door slides open, and if his voice has gotten such a reaction out of you, his slightly messy hair and jogging attire almost has you blushing, just the way it did 7 years ago, on your very first lift.
“So ?” Your partner urges you to speak up, and only then do you realize you’ve been standing in front of him, completely silent. You end up babbling a mess of words, and take a deep breath as to start anew. “I know we started off on the wrong foot. To be very honest, it’s kind of your fault, but I forgive you. Yesterday was especially bad, even though I’m pretty sure I was right, and you were wrong. However, I come in peace. For this reason, I have decided to be the mature person I am, and graciously overlook your past mistakes. Are we good now? ” The handsome male eyes your hand you stuck out for him to shake, and you two find yourselves wrapped in a parochial silence. “That’s not how apologizing works” You bite your tongue in order not to give into his taunting, and respond, “About that, I thought things through a little before coming here, and I believe I have nothing to apologize for. Thus, I decided to give you a chance to apologize instead. You’re welcome, by the way. ”
He gapes at you, and quickly regains his composure., “That’s funny, because I happen to think you actually do have stuff to apologize for.”
“And what would that be exactly ?”
“Being bitchy.”
You scoff, and cross your arms, “Me? I was only being bitchy because you were being an asshole.”
“Excuse me?”
“You’re excused.” Oikawa rolls his eyes, and is about to continue, when a man from the cabin next door groans. “Will you kids just keep it down? Some of us are too tired for your little lovers’ quarrel.”
At the mention of you and Oikawa being lovers, you both physically tense up, until the bickering starts again. “Look, I just wish you’d apologize!” You whisper-scream. “Apologize for what?” He insists, and you can’t believe your ears. “Are you serious ? Maybe apologizing for what you said when we first met? For not putting any effort in the skating just because it isn’t what you intended to do?” This time, it’s his turn to not believe his ears. “You want me to apologise for something that happened 7 seven years ago?” “That, and the no-effort thing.” “Oh so you really are serious.”
Be the bigger person. You take a deep breath, trying to focus on what to do in order to get Oikawa and you to make peace. Obviously, your partner is not able to see further than his own nose in this situation. So, it is up to you to make him understand that the stakes are too high for the both of you to simply go back and forth like children at around 35 thousand feet up in the air.
“Look. You’ve said it before, we can’t risk not being on the podium at the Olympics. What I’m trying to do, is restore our relationship, have good chemistry during the games, and win. After that, you can do whatever you want. I frankly don’t care if this isn’t your dream, it’s mine. I need to win. Just this once.” You plead.
This is humiliating. You’ve hit an all-time low. But it needed to be done. And by the look on his face, you can already tell this top 1 of your most embarrassing moments have not been in vain.
“Okay. Fine. I don’t promise anything but, ” he enters a fit of coughing, and tries his best to maintain his composure, “I’m sorry. What I said yesterday was kind of in the heat of the moment, I guess. But, sure. Winning. Totally.”
You open your mouth to thank him, but he pushes you out, and closes the door. Once again, you’re left frothing at the mouth. Maybe it was a sign not to thank him after all.
-
Oikawa has always hated the sound of skates rattling against the ice. But for some reason, he’s still standing on the rink, performing. He doesn’t know why. It’s the same with his relationship with you. You both hate each other, but you still skate together. It’s not out of a lack of opportunities; he was very coveted, and so were you. He couldn’t possibly count on his fingers the number of times you could’ve parted ways, and yet, here you both are, about to compete in the Olympic games. You’ve only got few days left to train and perfect the programm, but Oikawa still finds himself staring up at the windows of the rink. It was night, but he couldn’t spot any stars or the moon. Still, the sky was faintly light. He’d have to head to bed soon. “Done daydreaming ?” A voice calls out. It’s you. You were always pretty, but the faint glow around you due to the night sky makes you even prettier. Such a shame your beautiful face had to be paired up with such a horrid personality, he thinks.
“I’m talking to you.” You speak up, again.
“I can hear you.” Oikawa narrows his eyes at you.
“So you’re just ignoring me.”
“Correct.”
“Awesome. I thought we were getting somewhere.” You shoot him a look. Oikawa scoffs. He’s glad the dark manages to cover the expression he’s sporting, because you’d never let go of it. Oikawa flustered? What a scoop! “Getting where? We’re not a couple, much less friends.” If the night sky manages to cover him, it doesn’t do it for you. He wishes it did, because the saddened smile you’re wearing makes his stomach twist. He wants to take back the words he said. Over his lifetime, he’d take back practically half what he’s said if he could.
If only his pride could let him.
-
Thundersnows are, according to scientists, a rare occurrence. However they seemed common enough for you to have to live through one. It’s funny, in a twisted way. On one hand, you love snow, but on the other, you are absolutely terrified of thunders. Your first thought is to go see your coach. Around 5 years ago, while you were in a training camp, there had been one of the loudest storms you had ever had the horror of living. You had ran towards your coach’s room, begging her to stay with you. The thought still makes you smile, as a reminder of your friendship with her. You open your fist to reveal a white pearl, hanging from black thread, a token from your friendship. She had gifted it to both you and Oikawa after your very first gold medal.
A heavy knock on the door interrupts your soft moment, and soon enough, it creaks open, revealing a brown-haired figure skater, clad in loose fitting jeans, and a shirt.
“To what do I owe the pleasure? Thought we ‘weren’t even friends’? What happened to that?” You don’t even bother looking up at him.
“Don’t flatter yourself. Coach said you were scared of thunders. She can’t help you out right now, she’s stuck in traffic with Ukai, so she sent me instead.” He runs his hand through his hair, and sits down on your bed. “Ukai, huh ?” You hum, “Always knew there was something going on between them.” You make yourself comfortable, and lie down on your bed. Feeling generous, you invite Oikawa to do the same. “Since when are civil ?” He quirks an eyebrow, and you shrug, “Ever since I was too tired not to be.” He doesn’t question your odd change of behaviour any further, and a leans back on the bed headboard.
“Do you think Ukai and coach have already fucked?” He asks, suddenly turning towards you. “Don’t be crude.” You respond.
“Is that a yes ?” His last question gets a chuckle out of you, and you realise that you completely forgot about the storm ever since he got here. “Maybe.” “Maybe !?” He props himself up on his shoulders, “Are you kidding ? They totally have! Have you seen the way they look at each other ? Man. Disgusting.“
“I find them cute. It’s love.”
“You’re disgusting too”
“Says the guy who wore skates two sizes too small during a comp. Who the hell does that ?”
“Who the hell falls on a toe loop ?” Oikawa retorts.
You snort, “That was low.”
“Your world standing is low.”
“My world standing is also your world standing.” You look back at him, and you find him staring at you. “I’m gonna hit you with the pillow.” You don’t get to say what you were planning to say anyway, because a pillow is hurled at your face.
You take it off, and wholeheartedly laugh. “You’re not half as bad as I made you out to be.” Oikawa observes. “Well, you would’ve known earlier if you hadn’t been such an asshole since day one”.
“Oh, so now it’s my fault?” He retorts, “if my memory serves me right, you were being quite the asshole as well.”
“Excuse me?” Your mouth falls open.
“Sometimes I even wonder how you spoke like that. Weren’t you like, twelve?”
“I’m just well-spoken.” You prop your chin up. It was true. Your parents had always pressured you. Etiquette lessons, piano lessons, countless extracurricular activities. No wonder you managed to seem like a smartass to Oikawa.
“Sure.”
Silence makes its way in the room, none of you daring to disturb it, until a question makes an appearance at the back of your mind. So close.
“Why do you not do any effort in our routines?”
“Me?” Oikawa stares back at you with a dazed look, “Given everything we’ve won, you’d think the opposite, no?”
“I’ve asked you about this before, but you’d just ignore me. I want you to be honest with me. I mean effort as in, something more than what’s expected of you, stimulated by the happiness that skating brings you. You don’t do that. And I’m just tired of doing everything in my power in order to balance your lack of passion out.”
“Then don’t.” His simple answer makes you scoff.
“And lose all my chances at the games? No way. This is my dream. I’ve never wished for anything more than this.”
“Then why didn’t you switch partners?”
He’s right. Why didn’t you ? You don’t look at him in the eye, you wouldn’t dare to. Because you know the answer, but never in a million years would you ever willingly face it. Not in the kind of environment you’re in right now, you can’t take it or risk it. Besides, you’ve feigned feeling nothing but resentment towards him in the past few years. What kind of delusional would you be if you even thought of him possibly liking you back ?
“I.. I don’t know. Why haven’t you ?” Counter a question by a question. Great thinking. If only his question wasn’t as frustrating as his answer.
“Because I don’t know what I’d do without you. You said it yourself, your determination is essential to our performances. It makes up for whatever I don’t have. We balance each other out. And admit it, our little ‘lovers quarrels’ mean too much for you to ever let them go, don’t they ?”
The proximity and the subtle flirting make your chest feel warm, even though you know it shouldn’t. You can’t let these type of doubts eat you from the inside, but you can’t help it. You just know realize that you desperately need to keep yourself in check to have a chance to step on the podium.
“You’re too tired. Did you consume anything before coming here ?” You wave him off, in a brief attempt to cover your embarrassment.
“Love.” He grins.
-
The peace between you and Oikawa seemed to have only been an interwar period, because it only took a few hours for the animosity to come back.
A conversation you weren’t even supposed to hear. That’s all it took for your heart that was beating like crazy a few moments prior to shatter, once again, just the way it did over the years with Oikawa.
“Are you sure you want to leave the team, Oikawa ?” A feminine voice speaks up. The coach, you think.
“Yeah. I can’t do it anymore, this is just a lack of professionalism at this point.” Another one speaks. It’s a man this time. Oikawa, you realize.
“You do realize you could just talk this out, right? Consider it, at least, tons of athletes have dealt with this, you know.”
“It’s.. it’s not for me I’m doing this. Sorry.”
You don’t even bother listening to the rest of the conversation. You hadn’t even taken your own warning into account, and here you were, in the cafeteria, carelessly moving your food around, without plans to actually eat any of it.
The doors from the training centre close behind you and Oikawa, and he speaks up, “So? What’s gotten your panties in a twist ?”
“Nothing is wrong! Why do you care anyway? This has nothing to do with you!” You immediately blow up, and swear you could gouge his eyes out. One second you two find yourselves flirting, the next he wants to leave the team, and for the grand finale, Oikawa suddenly cares about your mental state. You tend to find it rather funny, since his antics make up around half of the reasons for your deteriorating mental state. On the other hand, you’ve had just about enough of him stringing you along and acting as if nothing’s wrong.
“First, you have got to calm down, holy shit. Second, I care because you’re my partner, and because we’re about to compete! Tomorrow!” He seethes.
You can’t help but laugh at his lousy excuse, “I call bullshit. You’re a horrible liar. You don’t care about the Olympics, much less about me. Stop fucking around, tell me the truth.”
“You know what? Fine! I give up! I don’t care about you, and I certainly dont care about the games. Good luck winning this alone. Knew I shouldn’t have listened to the coach.” He mutters, and almost walks away, until you grab him by the elbow. He makes a move to get rid of you, but you stand your ground.
“That’s why you asked me how I was doing? Because of the coach?” You look up at him. Anger is evident in your face.
“I thought you didn’t care? Make up your goddamn mind, (y/n)! Also, that’s not what I was even talking about. Stop assuming all the time!”
For the first time since this argument started, you’re at a loss of words. You couldn’t tell him you did care, you couldn’t tell him how betrayed you felt, you couldn’t tell how you felt at all.
“So what were you talking about then? Felt bad cause you’re leaving and wasn’t planning on telling me shit?”
“Where did you hear that from ?” You can see his face get hard, and you instantly regret what you said earlier. You’ve never seen him in such a serious state. “Nowhere. Forget it.” You try to wave him off and get on your way, but he doesn’t let you. You’ve definitely struck a nerve.
“No, I won’t forget it. Where did you hear that from? No one was supposed to know about this, especially not you. So, again, where the hell did you get that from?”
“I.. I just heard you and the coach speak about it when I passed your room in the hallway on the way to the cafeteria.” However, his outburst doesn’t stop you from getting defensive as well.
“So, are you happy? Stringing me along making me think we were finally doing well, and then just leave? Got want you wanted all along, right? How much of an asshole exactly are you? And don’t you dare tell me I’m the asshole, because that’s not true and you know it. You told me we were going to stick together, and then you just go, and you- you just..” you can’t help the sobs. You feel so incredibly stupid for letting your emotions take you over, and letting Oikawa know how much he hurt you. How much power he holds over you. Now there’s definitely no chance for him to genuinely try tomorrow, or even win. He’ll be too busy despising and avoiding you.
“Look at me. Come on, look at me.” The brown haired boy looks down at you, craddling your face with his hands.
“Cut the bullshit,” you sob, “I’m not falling for it anymore.” You tear his hands off your face.
“I’m not bullshitting you. I swear, god, I am not leaving the team, I did not mean to string you along, and I don’t hate you. At least not anymore.”
“So you did hate me!”
“So did you!”
“No I didn’t! You are such a moron, I can’t believe you. I like you. When I was twelve, when we first met, you remember the bad lift we did? Do you remember the way I looked at you back then? You thought treating me like shit was gonna be all it took for the feelings to magically disappear?”
“I can’t believe you’re calling me a moron when you’re truly not any better.” He says, and carefully cradles your face again. “Because I liked you, too.”
“You suck.”
He grins, and leans in. This time, you don’t fight him. You invite him in, and when he finally locks lips with yours, the fireworks are blowing up in your stomach. You throw your arms around his neck in an attempt to draw him close than you both already are, and his hands make their merry way to your waist. You could stay like this forever. Your brain goes haywire, and when Oikawa slightly pulls away, you can’t help but feel disappointed that it’s already over.
“Don’t worry, they’ll be many more to come,” Oikawa chuckles, in response to your obvious insatisfaction.
“I’m still mad at you for being an asshole for so long just because you were too pussy to tell me you liked me.” You point at his chest.
“Sorry, couldn’t resist the possibility of an ennemies to lovers with you.”
-
“Second place, (Country name), Oikawa Toorū and (y/n) (l/n)!”
Second place. It’s not what you wanted. You should feel sad and disappointed, but you’re not.
“I’m sorry we couldn’t win first place.” Oikawa murmurs. You let your foreheads touch, and whisper in reply, “I don’t mind. There’s always next time. Besides, even if I didn’t get first place, I got something else that I like way better.” Before your lips get to touch, however, a camera flash goes off, blinding the both of you, and you hear a few teenage girls in the bleachers whine.
“He’s taken now?” One of the girls indiscreetly whispers, and another one responds, with the same obvious disappointed tone, “I guess..”
You can’t find it in yourself to care. Looks like winning isn’t just about first place after all, because even if you haven’t won, you still feel more victorious than you ever have before.

【我的英雄學院/勝出】祟
BIRTHDAY FIC. MY HERO ACADEMIA - HAUNTOLOGY ↘ PROLOGUE:
生日快樂("It’s okay, Kachan. It won’t hurt.”)。

by DearRandall

notes n warnings ❅ *: snowboarder! reader x coach! Iwaizumi, all fluff and cute winter wonderland theme, a little angst, heavily inspired by Taylor swift’s folklore album, bad pacing as always, areblogs are always appreciated, and I hope you all have a great ski season! wc 4.2 k
part 2 of snowflakes are kisses from heaven
DAY 1
You hated this voice. Echoing all over the ski slope, everyone could hear it loud and clear: you had not managed to keep up with the public’s expectations. The distorted voice continues calling out the podium winners, eventually taking a break to build the suspense when he gets to the gold medalist. The gold medalist that should’ve been you.
“First place! Chloe Kim of the United States of America!”
You look down to your feet as the Chinese translator takes over, and play with you bronze medal. You’re not mad at her. You’re mad at yourself. 'If onlys’ quickly fill up the entire functioning parts of your brain. If only you had worked harder. If only you had listened to your coach about this and that. If only you had worked longer. If only you hadn’t brushed off the criticism online. If only.
Looking back at the past months, disappointment takes over. You’re about to enter a self-deprecating inner rant when a someone grabs your hand, and you almost feel bad for wishing it would be somebody else.
“Are you thinking of getting off that podium anytime soon? Or maybe you’d rather sleep there.” A deep voice chuckles. You don’t find it funny.
“Iwaizumi.” You nod, acknowledging his presence. You don’t want anything to do with him at the moment. You two had built some sort of a friendship throughout the games, playful banter making up most of your conversations, but right now, you don’t feel like it. Especially since he’s Chloe Kim’s coach.
“Who pissed in your cereal?” He jokes, again, and this time, you don’t bother answering. You don’t have to, because he gets it. You wish he didn’t. Iwaizumi puts his hands on your shoulders, and continues, “Come on! Don’t act like third place is bad! These were your first games, you’ll have plenty of time to get first place at any other time.” He tries to make you see the bright side of things, knock some sense into you. It doesn’t work, as you just decide to shrug his hands off instead.
You can’t stand the act you’re putting up in front of him anymore. You take off your helmet, step down from the podium, and there it is. The disappointment comes by again, because if only the step was a little bit bigger. Maybe you would’ve been more satisfied then.
“Of course you’d say that.” You scoff lightly, “Your trainee just won. For whom, by the way, I’m very happy. Really, I am. But you didn’t have time after your first Olympics, and that’s why you’re on the sidelines right now. There’s a fifty fifty chance I might end up like you before the next Olympics. So excuse me, but no.” You turn on your heel shortly after that, not expecting the conversation to go any further.
“I get it.” He calls out to you.
For a while, you don’t say anything. The cold mountain breeze blows softly, the snowflakes silently settle on your hair. You realize you forgot to put on lipbalm this morning, and carefully reach up to your lips. The bumps you feel with your fingers confirm that they’re chapped: even more so with the cold.
Hajime catches his breath before starting again. “I get it. You’re an athlete, our careers end early. We don’t have much time and that’s how it is. It’s unfair. And that, is exactly why you can’t let this get to you. You don’t have time to bitch and moan.” He couln’t help adding a personal aside; “Besides, you know, for somebody who’s never been at Olympics before, you actually did great; I don’t mean to discredit Chloe but, she’s been there before. You haven’t.”
“I guess” You mumble quietly. You don’t dare look at him. His gaze is unsettling, his dark eyes never leaving yours.
“Bye, now.” Your attempt at indifference is laughable. Your voice is weak and lacks authority, your words sucked into an empty void as you wave your hand dismissively. You begin your walk up to the Olympic village, and his voice makes way to your eardrums once again.
“Meet me at this exact slope tomorrow, at midday. I want to tell you something.”
DAY 2
Your indexes press both your temples, your elbows lying on your bathroom counter. You look at the time, then back at the mirror, only to find it reflecting an image that doesn’t satisfy you; at all. Concealer, foundation, setting powder, color correcters- you had tried everything, if not more, to get rid of the awful panda eyes you woke up with, but nothing worked.
At this rate, you were surely going to be off the rocker by midday -which happened to be the time at which you were supposed to meet Iwaizumi. You take one last glance at your watch for good measure, only to find out you had a measly quarter of an hour before you’d have to leave. You have 10 left when you realize you’re a desperate case.
Who were you trying so hard for, anyway? You stop dead in your tracks. Who were you trying so hard for? Iwaizumi? Surely not. You feel your cheeks and the tip of your ears get hot at the thought. Inhale, hold, exhale. And again. You repeat this action a few times, in hopes to cool down, clear your head, but it’s not easy. The fact that you’re running late for the meet-up is not helping, either. You’re considering taking a rain-check on it, because you just realized you’re probably in love with someone else’s coach.
“Probably”, smoke forms itself in the cold air after  the words escape your lips. “Probably.” you repeat, in an attempt to reassure yourself.
The next time you catch yourself thinking of your impromptu ‘crush’, you’re going up a mountain, the subject of your thoughts staring right back at you.
“A penny for your thoughts?”
The question almost makes you snicker. Iwaizumi had coined this expression after hearing it on an American sitcom you two had watched not too long ago, and your heart aches at the memory. You had no doubt that if he even had an inkling of what was going on inside your head, Hajime would’ve been out of your sight before you’d even be sure of your feelings. You suppose it won’t make much of a difference, considering you’re to leave in a day from now.
“I wouldn’t even sell them for a million, forget it.” You narrow your eyes at him.
At this, the bulky man raises a brow. “So you do have something to hide ?”
“Drop it.” You warn again.
You can see his mouth slightly parting, ready to shoot you another remark, attempting to find out what exactly is clouding your mind, when the lift doors open, and one of the cable car drivers usher you out of the cabin with a disapproving look.
You elbow Iwaizumi in the ribs, asking him what exactly went through his mind for your presence to get such a reaction out of the driver.
He doesn’t answer, and instead grabs your gloved hand to drag you through the woods until you reach a tiny ski shed. It’s slightly old, and the wood is close to giving out, the color slowly fading from a nice brown to a dull grey.
The inside is a nice contrast to the cold outside, and you don’t wait a second to come in and find a tiny loveseat while draping a duvet on yourself.
“By all means, make yourself at home.” Hajime says. At this, you stop moving, suddenly realising how impolite you were being. You raise your head, only to be met with a handsome grin. “I’m kidding” he finishes.
You reply with another smile, turning your head to the tiny scratched square window on the right. The sky is oddly bright, the clouds acting as a screen, reflecting the light. It’s truly a beautiful sight to behold, the snowflakes fluttering down to land softly on the rim of the window. Over time, the snow clumps together to form a thick blanket over the frozen grass. The snowfall is so harsh it only takes a few minutes for the layer to thicken until it’s already reaching 15 centimeters.
“It’s beautiful, isn’t it?” Iwaizumi whispers.
“It is.” You answer.
There’s no need for any of you to fill the empty void of silence after that. You fall into a comfortable atmosphere, and it feels like a dream neither of you want to wake up from. You can feel Iwaizumi’s soft stare, and few seconds later, you feel your loveseat dip, and a head fall on your shoulder. you tilt your head, questioning his behaviour, but the slow breathing indicates he’s already fallen asleep.
“Maybe I do like you.” You whisper to yourself, your eyes running over his features. It’s a risky move, but as far as you’re concerned, he’s supposedly asleep. Your heart swells as you notice the droplets of snow on his eyebrows and eyelashes. You don’t think you’ve ever seen anybody this beautiful before. His delicate lips are the last thing you see before you fall asleep yourself.
You wake up, and it’s noon. By then, you’re sure you’ve fallen in love with Iwaizumi Hajime.
“Hey sleepyhead. Look, I’ve talked to the cable cars staff and the last lift is in 15 minutes so, we should get going.” A tall man opens the door and speaks up. You don’t have to open your eyes to know it’s the man that’s been occupying your thoughts for the past day.
You relunctantly get up from your comfortable seat, and put on your jacket, and head out to the cable car station. On the way, you can’t help but ask a question that you’ve been keeping to yourself ever since earlier this afternoon.
“So, what did you want to talk to me about?” You start, fiddling with you fingers. It hadn’t been your goal to pressure him into telling you, but your curiousity took the best of you.
“Won’t tell you until you tell me what was up with you on the way up here.” He crosses his arms on his chest, determined to know what was up with you.
You raise a brow, clearly unimpressed with the chantage attempt. “I’m not telling you.” You stay firm and focused. You would rather die than have anybody know about your crush about your opponents’ coach, let alone the man himself.
“I guess I won’t tell you what I wanted to tell you, then.” He says nonchalantly, playing with your nerves. You don’t give in to his game, and shrug, “fine by me.”
It was not fine by you.
DAY 3
“Are you sure we’re even allowed to do this?” You shout over the wind, snowboard in hand.
“We used the lift last time and the guy said it was fine. I asked him about it again this morning and he said it was also fine. Don’t stress.” Iwaizumi answers, adjusting his ski glassware.
You huff. “I’m not stressing. I just think it’s very irresponsible, ‘s all.” Your maternal instincts take over as your hands settle on your hips, as if you were scolding a child. “And, your injury. I don’t want to be blacklisted by your twitter stans, they are terrifying.”
He doesn’t do anything but laugh, until he speaks up again. “Thought you were actually worried about me for a second.”
“You wish” A grin takes over your face, which is quickly mirrored by your interlocutor; “A man can dream” the black haired man sighs, looking up. It doesn’t take too long for him to wake up from his daydreaming, as he shuns you forward, and indicates for you to get your snowboarding gear on.
You consider questioning his words from a few seconds ago, but quickly decide against it, and wordlessly comply and count the seconds until your partner was done as well. The view in front of you is breathtaking. Far off, you can already see the steep sides of the mountains and their sloping sides and rounded ridges. They’re not snowboarding friendly, you know that, but their beauty is so captivating, as if they’re beckoning you forward, begging you to come their crooked tracks.
The slopes are untouched, yet to be used, and a fresh even layer of snow broods the land. In moments like these, you remember why you’ve been doing this for so long, why despite the losses, you’re still out there, competing.
“Come on! We don’t have time to loose!” Iwaizumi’s voice fills the short-lived silence, and you start worrying.
“You said the cable car driver was fine with it! Why would there be time to loose?” You reply, fastening your helmet.
“I said the cable car driver was fine with it, not the security!”
You let out a frustrated grunt, unheard by Hajime, who’s already on his way down the slope. In this moment, you can’t find yourself to be mad at him. Not when he looks so happy, so carefree. He’d always looked slightly off ever since you met him, as if he was he was missing something, a particular little thing. So little, but so important. It now hits you that the particular little thing has to be snowboarding.
Iwaizumi is halfway down already, and you get ready to try and overtake him. A few tiny jumps, and you smoothly start gliding on the snow. You’ve always loved it. The speed, the adrenaline, the risk. By now you’ve amassed an incredible amount of said speed; you’ve always been used to things going by pretty fast, but even by your own standards, your eyes start to widen: maybe you’re going a little too fast after all.
You know you have when you suddenly collapse in what you thought was a tree, and land face down in the snow. The wind is knocked out of your lungs when you realize you can still feel the tree. Have I hit it so hard I uprooted the tree?? You start panicking. You were already in trouble for going down this slope when you weren’t supposed to -which your coach would definitely kill you for- and now you were supposed to deal with an uprooted tree? How unlucky could you even get?
A slight groan from the supposed tree gives you an answer: incredibly unlucky.
“Could’ve been a little nicer,” he laughs a little, and you wonder how he still has the energy to do this despite being hit by bulldozer; you. “I’m not as young as you.”
“This,” You take some time to recover from your irregular breathing rhythm, “This is all you have to say?”
“You’d rather have me yell at you or something?” He quirks an eyebrow, “Besides, I’m not too mad about how this whole thing ended up.” At this, you feel his hands go up to your waist, and only then do you realise the compromising position you two were in.
“Shut up.” You seethe, getting off of him and attempting to hide the flustured expression your face is bearing.
The task proves itself to be harder than you initially thought, as both of your snowboards get slightly intwined.
“Let me- Hold on, just-” His slightly out-of-breath tone is making your heart beat at a pace that you are sure was probably much faster than the speed at which you hit Iwaizumi. Your faces are so close to each other, you might pass out. He looks slightly shaken as well, because he holds on to you. Puts his arm around you, draws you close, and waits. You both close your eyes, and for a moment, nothing happens.
The only things to be heard are the ruffling of the trees and the wind’s whistles. You wish you could stay like this forever. You can’t even bring yourself to think about the fact that this isn’t how it should be. This isn’t right. But if it isn’t, why does it feel so normal?
Your helmet makes a noise, and you realize it’s due to both of your helmets blocking each other from getting any closer. Talk about a cockblock.
“The thing I wanted to talk to you about. You know, yesterday, on the lift?” You start. Your hands feel moist from the nervosity wrecking your brain, but this time is right. You’re obviously not the only that has enjoyed this ‘encounter’, and you had drawn two conclusions out of this fact: number one: you probably do have a shot with him after all, and number two: you should probably shoot it soon. Soon as in, right now.
“Oh. Right. Yeah, I have to say something, too. But, you-, you can start.” The position that has him laying on his back adds a slight edge to his voice, and you’re not sure if you feel incredibly attracted by it, or if it’s a sign you shouldn’t confess after all.
“Well. There’s no easy way to say this, and feel free to stop me any time because honestly, if you get weirded out, I won’t even get mad, like, this so out of the blue and totally weird so really just-“
A mechanical click is heard from the woods, behind one of the trees, causing both of your heads to whip to the tree’s direction. A black shadow, and suddenly, nothing. That’s what you see. However, it’s enough for you both to understand: it was a paparazzi.
The cozy and comfortable atmosphere you two had created had now vanished an record time: you two were soon enough messily getting off each other, running back to both of your respective hotels. This was not good. It couldn’t be.
DAY 4
The one time you desperately wanted to be wrong, you weren’t. Your coach woke you up at a whooping five am, with 46 messages et 6 missed calls. Out of the impressive amount of messages you could make out a link to an article; Oh, this definitely was not good.
Tumblr media
Your first reaction is a scoff. Star Crossed Lovers? How cheesy could these boulevard journals actually get? Your second is to pick up your coaches incoming call.
“Mind to explain? In what world does somebody get so reckless? With Iwaizumi, no less? Look, I know you’re upset about that bronze medal, but this was not the way to bring the attention back to you. God, how could you just-, what were you thinking?” The rest of his rant you don’t hear, drowning out his voice. All you can think of is Iwaizumi.
You just ruined his career. He had to retire from competitive snowboarding, and now, because of you, he’s going to have to let go of coaching, too. All because of you.
“I-I’m sorry, coach. Really. I know this is bad timing, but I really have to go.” You let out, bracing yourself for yet another storm of anger.
“You have to go? You cannot be-“ you hang up shortly after, having had enough of his grating mechanical voice.
You skip the bathroom; you don’t have time for casualties, you need to get to Iwaizumi as soon as possible. All throughout getting ready, you think about the fact that you would not have to get hastily ready if you had Iwaizumi’s phone number.
You take your jacket off the hook, grab your room’s key, and head out. You try your best to avoid the overwhelming stares. Some flash a sympathetic grin, and others opt for a glare of disdain, such as the woman sitting by the reception of the resort, seemingly waiting for someone else to arrive.
“You should be ashamed of yourself. You couldn’t stand for our Chloe to have the spotlight for a second, could you? You couldn’t steal her medal, so you stole her coach, didn’t you? You poor girl.” The woman comes up to you. The tone of her voice is unforgiving and unyielding. Soon enough, you notice the American flag embroidered on the sleeves of her jacket. She’s part of the American delegation, that’s why she’s blowing a fuse and having a go at you in public.
“Do we have a problem here, ladies?” An amiable voice from the back echoes in the reception.
All of a sudden, the woman, who, just a second ago was standing tall facing you, surrenders, muttering out a ‘no’ and soon leaves.
You turn around and, sure enough, it’s the man you’ve been trying to bump into. He takes your hand and, had you not been in your current situation, you would have felt the butterflies swarming in your belly.
“Come on up, we’ll go to my room, I’m sure they won’t give us any trouble there.” He proposes with a stunning smile, seemingly unaffected by the recent events. You stay in place, unable to move or speak.
“Assuming you’re here to talk to me, I mean. In light of recent events.”
You nod.
It doesn’t take too long until you both reach his suite, and only then does the long-awaited conversation start taking place. “I know about the article, by the way. You didn’t need to come up all the way here and deal with them. Appreciate it, nonetheless.” Iwaizumi reassures you.
“That’s.. great. Awesome. Could’ve avoided all that if I had your phone number, though.” You hold the sleeve of your left arm, unsure where that confidence came from.
“Is that your way of asking for my number?” He chuckles, “You could’ve just used social media.”
“Is that your way of rejecting me?” You comically imitate his last question, “And, not a fan. Besides, your accounts are all set in private.”
“So you did check.”
“You wouldn’t have accepted me either way.”
“What makes you say that?” Hajime tilts his head to the side. “After all the lifts I had to negotiate for you, and you think I wouldn’t have accepted you?”
You shrug. Now is not the time to give in to your delusional tendencies. “Isn’t this what friends do?” You ask, and when you turn your head around to face the brunette, you immediately regret it.
He looks dejected at the conclusion you’ve drawn from the past few days.
“What nice friends you have, then.” He doesn’t waste a second, and gets up from the bed. Clearly, you weren’t the only one that had suffered from an emotional turmoil this week. Your heart jumps at the realisation that Iwaizumi most probably likes you back, and also that the current situation you’ve found yourself in.
“No, I just- That’s not what I meant-“ you reach out to him, in vain.
“I get it. I’m not a child. We don’t feel same way about each other, and that’s fine. I can deal with it, I’ve been there before. Go back to your resort.”
“That’s not-“ you protest, but with a single hand movement, he silences you again.
“Go pack. You leave tomorrow.” The tone is unusual. It’s cold, hard, unwelcoming. It’s an order.
You’d be a fool to walk out of this door. Don’t walk out on him, the little voice in your head says.
“I like you back. I’ve always liked you.” You whisper. And with that, you walk out. Hajime doesn’t try to call you back.
DAY 5
You had never felt so homesick. Not even browsing the airport shops can help you feel better. Every tuft of black hair reminds you of him. You can’t shake him off, and feel like going crazy. The rest of your delegation won’t talk to you, presumably under the pressure of your coach, who was still incredibly mad at you.
The only one who hadn’t succumbed to peer pressure yet was a pretty and quiet girl by the name of Kiyoko. She mostly only listened and hummed as a sign that she was really listening, but that was more than enough for you.
“I just feel like shit for not having done more. I don’t know why I walked out on him. But like, at the same time, why wouldn’t he chase after me you know? If he really likes me. But maybe, maybe I was just being delusional the entire time and turns out he never liked me at all and I literally got it all wrong!” You gasp at that, “Oh my god. I would die if that was the case.”
You turn to kiyoko in panic, and hold her shoulders. “Do you think that was the case?”
In classic kiyoko fashion, she only blinks, and lets out a small ‘no’.
“I mean, even if that was the case, it’s not like I care. Like, Spencer Reid is hotter anyway.” You bite your fingernails, “or is he? Kiyoko, who’s hotter, Iwaizumi or Spencer Reid?”
“I don’t know who Spencer Rei-“
“I’d say Iwaizumi.”
It’s him. The only back tuft or hair you had been looking for in the swarm of people in the airport. You don’t have time to answer, because he takes your hand, and pulls you closer by the waist.
“I’m not sure..” you hum, “I think Spencer Reid might be a little more-“
Your words are drowned out by the sound of Iwaizumi’s lips smashing into yours. You relax into the kiss, and put your arms around his neck, pulling him as close as humanly possible. The scent of his cologne is addictive, and you would’ve stayed like this for centuries if it weren’t for the crowd.
“I’m sorry I didn’t chase after you like I was in a Hollywood movie. I thought you might want space.”
“You’re not forgiven.” You smile, and the grin he wears in response is making your heart jump out of your thorax.
Who knows if he never showed up what could’ve been?
