Unhappy Anniversary
So going by my Facebook memories it is exactly six years ago today that I went to see Infinity War.
I'd already heard rumours. I was fully prepared, and yet nothing actually prepared me for how much I felt completely slapped in the face in those first 10 or so minutes.
And still all these years later I've never found a satisfactory answer to several questions: did the writers/directors appreciate he was a fan favourite who people expected to be involved majorly in the plot? Do those same writers/directors even care that they upset a not insignificant part of the fanbase? Why couldn't they come up with literally anything else other than that? Do they know it was graphically over the top cruel for the franchise? I also can't believe Tom was dragged on a world tour for this shit. Imagine having to do that knowing your character is killed before the cold open like that character doesn't even matter anymore. I would've been way more distant than he was, I would've told everyone to shove it.

after you’ve been through like a string of fandoms and you’ve decided your favourite character/s for each one, there will come a day when you will list all your faves from each fandom side by side and look at them carefully and realise
you have a type

Yeah I've said several times before that the online manufactured inter-generational war thing is daft, mostly because the boundaries are blurred between generations and I actually do find I have a lot of common ground with Gen Z on some things...but I still don't want to be a whole 30something and worrying like my life depends on it that a 17 year old doesn't think I'm cool. Spoiler though: I have never been cool! The other thing is most of the nostalgia bait in pop culture is still aimed at us Millennials because we're the ones with the purchasing power at this moment in time. I think I can let the kids have thinking my clothing is old, because to them I AM old, even though objectively 30-40 isn't quite half way for many of us.
I'm just...not bothered? It'll happen to them too, we're all getting older (if we're lucky.) Let's all chill out.
Those videos that are like “sorry millennials but gen alpha thinks side parts/skinny jeans/high ponytails/whatever are cringey” are so painfully embarrassing can you IMAGINE being in your ENTIRE THIRTIES and caring what a twelve year old thinks about you??

15.5ish years ago my mum took me to see Hamlet with David Tennant in the starring role for my birthday.
I tried to get tickets for Macbeth's original run this year but because it was in SUCH a small theatre I missed out as anything left for the general sale sold out instantly.
A couple of days ago they announced the show was getting a West End transfer in October. Today I spent far too much money on some seats on the end of a row in the stalls (that are apparently not amazing) but I don't care...I've missed out on so many of David's stage performances over the last decade, I felt like it was my turn again. (My other dream is to see Tom Hiddleston on stage, especially Shakespeare, but his stuff sells out even more crazy than Tennant's stuff so I feel that will remain a dream if he ever returns to the stage at all.) Funny thing is my husband and I were already going to see Dr Strangelove in October so now we're seeing Macbeth on a Friday and Dr Strangelove Saturday matinee. We'll worry about hotel and flights/train down to London later... You know what made me pull the trigger? I saw a Tweet from someone saying their grandfather once told them to buy the expensive thing because "are you going to be the richest woman in the graveyard?" THAT !

Honestly all this and... the fact that this article keeps saying things along the lines of "Loki is not as complex as his fans might suggest" (paraphrased) set off alarm bells for me because that's such a typical anti argument that I've been hearing for years. Because Loki's fans often cite the complexities of his story as something that draws them to him. It's a common counter point to suggest implicitly or explicitly that we're silly airheads who just fancy Tom Hiddleston or whatever. Sure nobody is suggesting that comic book characters and films are the highest of high brow art (though I don't like putting it this way as it comes with an undercurrent of snobbery toward anyone who enjoys them) but relative to other characters, Loki's motivations and choices are subject to things beyond "just what heroes do" and of course that's before I touch the fact that people who identify with him tend to have felt lost or outcast at some point in their lives for a variety of reasons.
Most of the points in that Screenrant article come down to something I've ranted about before fairly recently: terrible and/or lazy writing for Loki because nobody knew what to do with him.
Sometimes I feel like saying to the people who write things like that...why are you still using these arguments after 13 years? It's nothing we haven't heard before. Why does it bother you that Loki has fans and they like him for a multitude of reasons. Get over it. But I don't say it because then that seems like I'm legitimising the likes of Screenrant as a source. My entire obvious fan blog can be a source going by that logic...
Loki Reddit is so annoying
You can't say ANYTHING that suggests you prefer his original characterisation without getting downvoted. I wasn't even being nasty (I really don't want to behave that way, so I don't) about the series, just mentioning that it has warped the perception casual fans have of the character.
I hate that even in the subreddit that is simply called "Loki" (so not even dedicated to just the series) you can't suggest the first Loki (2011-13/18) was better and your preferred era. It's driving me mad! I was responding to something clickbaity "10 Things no MCU fan will admit about Loki" which you can probably guess was full of nonsense as well. One of the points was "he didn't truly care about his family" which is an instant rage button for me...

I wish I had the time to write a tower fanfic. Ahhh id let Loki run missions with Thor and have goofy antics with the og members. 😔 He needs his own friends though, bro would probably still see it as a warriors 3 situation, "living in the shadow of [Thor's] greatness".

I completely get wanting a bit of a break from recurring characters (I for one got so very tired of the Daleks at one point in New Who, something child me watching repeats of the Classic series could never imagine!) but writing The Master out entirely?
Nah. The Master is one of the few characters who gets things exactly on the same level as The Doctor. It just adds something that the companions could never provide as they're usually the audience surrogate so just aren't meant to be seeing things from the Time Lord perspective. I know some people might be reacting to how upset they are about Missy's arc seemingly being undone but the thing is...we still have that arc! It still exists! Idk, as a lifelong villain fan I kinda get fed up of people moaning "Character X is sooo overused, kill them/stop writing them into everything" - sure villains can be overused and you can write yourself into a corner if you do a redemption arc but considering Time Lords regenerate and come back with different personalities etc in their new lives it's not like you're stuck forever more with what the last writers did.
People exist who actually want the Master to be written out of the show? Even temporarily? They’re like…the only other reoccurring character. The only other active character that can be recasted. Almost as central and iconic to the show as Cybermen or Daleks. Infamous for coming back from the dead. The Doctor’s person.

Donna Noble has never witnessed a regeneration that doesn't result in multiple doctors, at least one of them being David Tennant.
She spends life living with fourteen worried that he's going to fall down the stairs and she'll end up with another one.

I love Florence, it's one of my favourite places I've visited...but this is really funny. Loads of tourists go there already but you can always try squeeze some more through! Can't blame them for trying.
(Yes of course I took a photo of one of the many Dante things dotted around the city/went to his house...)
Tumblr media
today I learned that in 2008, the city council of florence overturned dante’s sentence of execution if he returned from exile. yes, dante’s inferno dante, who died in 1321.
but the funniest part of this is not that they were debating the exile of a man who has been dead for over 500 years.
the funniest part is that the vote was 19-5. five people voted to uphold dante’s exile.
