March of the Noldor

What is it?

A month-long event to commiserate the grueling walk the Noldor took, across the Helcaraxe, from Aman to Beleriand.

When is it?

March 1 - March 31

How do I participate?

But this is also a great time to reblog older works relating to the march too!

What is allowed?

Dappled Dapper Drabble Pony Race

Do you have what it takes to win on the Drabble Racetrack?

This weekend, our valiant champions are racing around Bree trying to write the most drabbles over the span of the course of 3 days, and you can still join them!

Find a friend (or more, to a maximum of 6 people), and get your team signed up here: https://forms.gle/3GVp1jnxzn78WhkX8 (note that you can only sign up teams for race 1. Solo sign ups are no longer possible for this race. Any solo sign-ups will be valid for the race on March 15-17 though!)

All you need is your team members' Ao3 username, and their email address or Discord handle, and you’re ready to ride!

The race starts on Friday, March 1, 12:30 pm UTC, and ends on Sunday, March 3, 11:30 pm UTC. Prompts will be sent to you on Friday, shortly before the start of the race.

Winners will be announced at a Grand Gala in April!

Please note that only one team member has to sign up their team.

Minhiriath Midway Step up, step in, let's see what you win! Blue Ribbon Exhibition The Prince of Cardolan loves to acknowledge hard work and creativity.  Enter your finest works into the Blue Ribbon Exhibition as an exhibition challenger.  Challengers will compete against others for the title of Best of Cardolan in the categories they enter.  All entries for the Blue Ribbon Exhibition are due by noon on June 1, 2024.

Dappled Dapper Pony Picture Coloring Contest The Dappled Dapper Pony Picture Coloring Contest (D²P²C²) is a very basic coloring contest event. Everyone starts with the same base image, and colors and embellishes their pony in whatever way they choose. 

Dappled Dapper Drabbled Pony Race  The Dappled Dapper Drabbled Pony Race is a team writing event which is being run as part of the Cardolan Carnival, a Back to Middle-earth Month 2024 Event.  For groups of 2 to 6, three races will be run throughout the month.  

Lost Treasures Quest  Part of Back to Middle-earth Month is revisiting works that are already in the world -- old favorites and new discoveries.  For the Lost Treasures Quests, you will be able to choose from leaving new commentary on works posted or written before 2020, making rec lists, working on WIPs (writing or art) that are at least a year old or more, or posting works currently unavailable publicly or at a new archive. 

The Prince of Cardolan's Grand Gala; April 12-14 The Grand Gala is a live event held on Discord.  During the event, winners of the various competitions will be announced (with the exception of the Blue Ribbon Exhibition), games will be played, live readings will occur, and generally, it will be a grand time.

Additionally, B2MEM is an open event where ANYTHING you create during March counts!  Feel free to add works you start, add to, or finish in March to the gallery!  You can also host your own events -- let us know what you're up to, and we'll add your event to the list of festivities!

Timeline of Events

The Midway will open on February 24, 2024. 

The Blue Ribbon Exhibition categories will be posted on March 1, 2024.  Entries are due by noon on June 1, 2024.  Winners will be announced at the Tarnin Austa event. 

The Lost Treasures Quest gameboard will be available no later than Feburary 24, 2024.

The Grand Gala will take place April 12-14, 2024. Cancelled. All activities moved to June. Announcements to follow.

Posting & Viewing Works

Beginning March 1st, 2024, works can be posted to the AO3 collection. This collection never closes, so while the event will wrap by the end of April, you can always add works later as you are inspired and finish them. If posting on Tumblr, use the tag B2MEM24 and @ this tumblr to make your posts easy to find by our team for reblogs!  You can join the Discord at any time!

What's this? This is how to participate in the first part of F3! It's a G-rated event for the Second and Third Ages of Middle-earth, focusing on Friendship and Family! You create a friendship chain or friendship bracelet with prompts.

B2MEM 2023 might be over, but the Spring into Arda team is not quite done yet!

We're introducing F3, an event to celebrate the friendships and families of the Hobbit, the Lord of the Rings and the Second Age!

This includes all the movies (yes, all of them), the Rings of Power, LOTRO and other Video games, Board/Card/Tabletop and Book Games and so on and so forth.

Your creations must be set in the Second or Third Age and they must be rated for General Audiences.

I will explain the main phases of the event below, but this link contains the detailed version.

How will F3 work?

There are three phases to this event!

First phase starting immediately is prompt creation!

If you know this mod team, you know we like putting a bit of a twist on things, so all prompts must come in form of friendship chains or bracelets, instructions for which are provided in the detailed F3 documentation linked above!

Each chain/bracelet must contain at least 4 and at most 12 prompts.

Prompts are limited to one, two, or three words, and can include characters, scenarios, random words and places, but no relationship prompts.

Keep in mind that creations are limited to G ratings, and your prompts should reflect that.

Each prompter is allowed to submit two prompt clusters.

A photo of your finished chain/bracelet plus a list of your prompts should be emailed to [email protected] by April 29 at the latest.

Phase 2: New Creations (May 6 - June 15, 2023)

If you have signed up as a creator you are now allowed to claim a prompt chain!

Multiple people are permitted to claim the same chain in the first round, and if not all chains get claimed during initial claims, you may also claim more.

You can now use your prompts to create any of the following:

a written work (at least 100 words)

a visual work (art, moodboard, craft)

an audio work (podfic, music, playlist)

You should create a chain of works (that's 3 or more items) based on the prompts you have claimed. These can be of the same type or a combination of two or more categories.

All creations for phase 2 are due by June 15.

And then it's time for Phase 3: Derivations (June 1 - June 30, 2023)!

You are now allowed to offer derivative works for either your own works or other works created for this event!

This can include a podfic of an existing story, a story inspired by a piece of art you created for round 2, or a craft based on a playlist for example.

You can also create additional treats for chain prompts!

Merry settled back against the trunk of the willow, stretching his legs out in front of him. A light breeze stirred the graceful branches, which brushed over the sunlight-dappled water of the pond and trailed among the cattails that grew in thickets at the water’s edge. 

Next to him, Pippin lit his pipe and pocketed his tinderbox, and the warm, earthy scent of pipeweed soon filled the air, complemented by Pippin’s steady stream of chatter about the various pies sold at Bywater’s market.

Merry tilted his head against the willow trunk and looked up through the long-limbed branches to the cracks of sky that showed between them. Sunlight peered between the puffy clouds that floated serenely across the sky, stippling the pond with light and shadow. 

“Mrs. Cotton’s blueberry peach pie is particularly good, especially when she serves it with a bowl of sliced peaches and custard—” Pippin broke off and sat forward, his attention caught by someone walking along the footpath on the far side of the pond. 

“Why, it’s Cousin Frodo!” Pippin exclaimed, standing and waving. “Frodo! Come join us!”

Frodo stopped and waved in recognition, then followed the curve of the pond bank to where Merry and Pippin sat before the willow.

The Drabble Duel has ended!

At last, the argument between the Girabbit and Glorfindel has been settled!

Glorfindel and the true drabble of exactly 100 words won by - I think we can call it a landslide.

When the galleries closed, the score was 524 to 91 works! That's a total of 615 fics!
