Blossoms in the Breeze
The light spring breeze was a contrast to the wintry gusts from several days ago. Eowyn still felt the chill and shivered involuntarily. Her dreams were still dark. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw that she was not alone.
The Steward from yesterday had joined her but did not speak immediately.
She found herself speaking, “The weather is not as cool as before.”
“Spring will come soon,” Faramir replied softly looking into Eowyn’s eyes. “We will see the warmth as a sign of better times.”
And their eyes strayed to a white cherry blossom sprouting, signaling a sign of hope.

Relief and Gratitude
“It is great to see you on the path of recovery, Frodo. What a path you had which was the darkest one of all,” said Faramir.
“We all had our struggles during the war and I am indebted to all that had distracted Sauron while Sam and I gradually …made it,” said Frodo slowly.
“The honest truth was that we all did not know if the right decisions were made at each turning point,” Faramir sighed. Thoughts about the siege, his father, the death of his brother flashed through his mind, but he turned back to Frodo, “I am glad that you are recovering- let me know if you need anything during this time in Minas Tirith.”
Frodo studied the Steward closely and spoke perceptively, “You need not worry about things that you cannot change. We all have doubted our actions but please be glad we made it.”
“You too, dear hobbit. Do not fault yourself at the end. We are all so glad you and Sam made it back.”
Emotions ran high for the hobbit and Man, and Faramir wrapped Frodo in a hug.
“We live to see another age of Middle-earth, thank you to you and your kind.”

" 'But the healers would have me lie abed seven days yet,' she said. 'And my window does not look eastward.' Her voice was now that of a maiden young and sad.     Faramir smiled, though his heart was filled with pity. 'Your window does not look eastward?' he said. 'That can be amended. In this I will command the Warden. If you will stay in this house in our care, lady, and take your rest, then you shall walk in this garden in the sun, as you will; and you shall look east, whither all our hopes have gone. "
I do like that even though Faramir said he didn't have authority over the Warden, nor would he overrule him when it comes to his expertise, he does just that for Eowyn when he promises that she will be able to have a new room and get out of bed and walk about, when the Warden (acting on Aragorn and Gandalf's instructions) was telling Eowyn she needed to stay in bed for seven days, even though Eowyn herself was insisting she couldn't handle being stuck in bed for that long.
Faramir saw how desperate Eowyn was not to be stuck in bed, and acted accordingly. And when Eowyn was telling Faramir why she wanted to leave, he actually listened to her and understood her reasons, and was able to convince her to stay by showing her how her aims would better be achieved recovering, than in a futile chase after the host. He doesn't just order her on the grounds she's a patient or she's a maiden or in their city.
And when he speaks of them both waiting, he acknowledges her as a fellow soldier. And I think that's why Eowyn's frost is mentioned as having thawed a bit, because here is someone who is taking time to hear her, not just dismissing her or going ahead thinking they know what she needs and wants.

Someone asked me to expand a little on a topic that was buried down in a big chain of reblogs, so I'm doing that here--it's about the use of the archaic "thee", "thou", "thy", etc. in LOTR and what it tells you about characters’ feelings for one another. (I am NOT an expert on this, so it's just what I've picked up over time!)
Like many (most?) modern English speakers, I grew up thinking of those old forms of 2nd person address as being extra formal. I think that's because my main exposure to them was in the Bible ("thou shall not...") and why wouldn't god, speaking as the ultimate authority, be using the most formal, official voice? But it turns out that for a huge chunk of the history of the English language, "thee," "thou," and "thy" were actually the informal/casual alternatives to the formal "you", “your”, “yours”. Like tú v. usted in Spanish!
With that in mind, Tolkien was very intentional about when he peppered in a "thee" or a "thou" in his dialogue. It only happens a handful of times. Most of those are when a jerk is trying to make clear that someone else is beneath them by treating them informally. Denethor "thou"s Gandalf when he’s pissed at him. The Witch King calls Éowyn "thee" to cut her down verbally before he cuts her down physically. And the Mouth of Sauron calls Aragorn and Gandalf "thou" as a way to show them that he has the upper hand. (Big oops by all 3 of these guys!)
The other times are the opposite--it's when someone starts to use the informal/casual form as a way to show their feeling of affection for someone else. Galadriel goes with the formal "you" all through the company's days in Lórien, but by the time they leave she has really taken them to heart. So when she sends them a message via Gandalf early in the Two Towers, she uses "thee" and "thou" in her words to Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli because now they're valued friends and allies. And--this is the big one, folks, that was already alluded to in my previous post--Éowyn starts aggressively "thou"ing Aragorn when she is begging him to take her along as he prepares to ride out of Dunharrow. She is very intentionally trying to communicate her feelings to him in her choice of pronoun--an "I wouldn't be calling you "thee" if I didn't love you" kind of thing. And he is just as intentionally using "you" in every single one of his responses in order to gently establish a boundary with her without having to state outright that he doesn't reciprocate her feelings. It's not until much later when her engagement to Faramir is announced that Aragorn finally busts out "I have wished thee joy ever since I first saw thee". Because now it is safe to acknowledge a relationship of closeness and familiarity with her without the risk that it will be misinterpreted. He absolutely wants to have that close, familiar relationship, but he saved it for when he knew she could accept it on his terms without getting hurt.
So, you know, like all things language-based...Tolkien made very purposeful decisions in his word choices down to a bonkers level of detail. I didn’t know about this pronoun thing until I was a whole ass adult, but that’s the joy of dealing with Tolkien. I still discover new things like this almost every time I re-read.

Of Darkness and Hope
“Come now, is the dream that bad? Please talk to me,” Éowyn gathered Faramir in his arms and willed him to consciousness. Sweat had gathered and Faramir looked disoriented briefly but smiled to see Éowyn next to him. Éowyn placed a handkerchief to wipe away the sweat from his raven hair and stroked Faramir’s back comfortingly.
It was a bad night in which nightmares returned. It was the anniversary of Boromir’s passing and even though Faramir claimed he was alright, he did not speak, was silent the whole day and kept his distance, locking himself in his study during the day and retreating from Éowyn. The night before, he would dream every few hours, and Eowyn tried her hardest to comfort him and have him open up. At first Faramir was withdrawn and Éowyn feared the Black Breath had returned since Faramir was also cool on his shoulder area, but Éowyn had athelas handy and it proved useful to bringing him to the present . Éowyn also made sure there were some warm cloths to warm up Faramir. She took care to make sure Faramir was alright though she knew he would be loath to say he was otherwise.
“Here, have some tea, my dearest.” Éowyn made sure the tea wasn’t too hot to guide it to her husband’s lips. Faramir sat up to receive some of the tea.
“Thank you,” said Faramir quietly. “I am sorry to alarm you, my love.” Faramir’s pulse had returned to normal and his eyes were clearer and not glazed. “Just…dreams…”
“Do you want to talk about your dreams?”
Faramir paused but then said in one breath, “Fire, and blood from the battle, and …Boromir’s corpse… in the middle of the Anduin and i… i… cannot save him.” He leaned into Eowyn and she firmly embraced him. “And my friends…and …father,” Tears gathered once more. He trembled and even though Eowyn had the fire up and burning, it still seemed too cool that February night. The fire only brought snatches of memory of almost being burnt alive. Faramir shivered with the memory once more.
“It is not your fault, please believe me,” said Eowyn, and she kissed him to bring him to the present and drew more blankets for him. “Stay present with me. We are here together. I know you loved Boromir and fellow soldiers. We will do our annual ritual trip to Parth Galen? We will also make sure to write to your friends’ families and see how they are.”
“Yes, that is a good idea- let’s do that tomorrow.” Faramir paused. “I’m sorry, Éowyn.”
“Why are you apologetic? I love you. I fear that it must be that the dark times come forth but we will see each other through,” Éowyn brought a handkerchief for Faramir’s tears. Tears had gathered in Eowyn’s own eyes. Éowyn had suffered dreams herself but hadn’t bothered Faramir about it. Her dark times would come as well in this season of darkness where it marked one year since the destruction of the Ring and the losses that came with it.
She feared to see Faramir this way and hoped he could see how valued and important he was . Aragorn had told Éowyn that he was invaluable as Steward and Prince of Ithilien as well as a dear friend to the king .
“As do I –thank you for being here for me.”
“I would not be with anyone else, and you’re mine to keep safe and happy.” Éowyn tried to keep Faramir’s spirits brighter- he had been so down the past day.
“What did I do to deserve you?” Faramir looked into Eowyn’s eyes in admiration and love. He held onto Eowyn’s hands. He just noticed he had stopped shivering.
“You are the best man of Gondor and Middle-earth and I am the one lucky to have you!” Eowyn kissed Faramir on the lips .
“We are both lucky,” Faramir then folded Éowyn to a huge embrace and kissed her back.
