He sat up more, eyes unfocused as he hugged himself.
Tried to remember not to wake Ginger up as he took another shaky inhale. (Another of the few times he was grateful the two no longer shared a room.)
Again ignoring the other’s old protests that he “stop trying to protect me.”
Just the routine.
Ever since they found Joey (saw what remained..) this had become a routine. It wasn’t every night. Far from it, actually. But every once in a while was enough. Enough that before it started all over again, few restful nights passed after he was finally able to fall asleep without anxious anticipation.
(At this point it was just tiresome. Tiresome, not scary.)
The creak of the door opening had his eyes shooting towards the intruder, his heart leaping to his throat.
(At least that’s what he told himself.)
Mr. Pat’s head appeared in the crack, and the smallest amount of tension left the kid at the sight. He knew, logically, that Joey wouldn’t - couldn’t - open the door to come in, but the fact failed to quell his nerves.
Maybe he was a terrible person—after all, it wasn’t the ghost boy’s fault—but Joey was one of the last people Seth wanted to see right now. How quickly he’d learned that, when Joey bursting in to see what was wrong one of the first few times sent Seth into another spiral. Not that the ghost knew this.
Seth couldn’t even be upset with Joey. He felt bad, actually, because wasn’t this selfish of him? Joey was the one who had that terrible (terrifying, horrible) thing happen to him. Who was Seth to struggle through god knows how many sleepless nights because of what happened?
(Then again, neither of them asked for this. And they did have someone to be angry with, didn’t they? The one who they’ve been searching for. The one who put Joey and the rest of them in this situation in the first place, who’s been evading anyone’s notice all this time, who’s still walking free somewhere—)
Anyway.
”Are you okay, son? I heard a scream.” Mr. Pat was squinting through the darkness, searching. Seth shifted, sniffing.
”I screamed?”
He thought he’d gotten past that.
The predicted yet painfully obvious break in his voice made its way to Mr. Pat, who seemed to soften in response as he hobbled into the room.
”Hm. Maybe more like a shout. Plenty manly, don’t worry.” He placed the machete that accompanied him (prepared for anything, as always) down at the foot of the bed and came over to pat Seth’s shoulder, earning a quiet laugh. “Another nightmare?”
Something twisted in Seth’s chest.
He hummed.
As usual, Mr. Pat pulled a steaming cup of tea—probably the perfect temperature already—seemingly out of nowhere (always prepared) and motioned for the kid to loosen his grip on the fabric to take it.
“You’ll survive.”
He snorted lightly again, breathing in the bitter steam
starting to relax in the comforting presence of his and his little sibling’s (and now their new specter friend’s, in a way) guardian
releasing a sigh.
Just the routine.
