I know "60s housewives who invented slash fanfiction" has taken on a life of its own as a phrase, but Kirk/Spock didn't really exist until the 70s and THOSE WOMEN HAD JOBS. They were teachers and librarians and bookkeepers and scientists and they damn well spent their own money going to conventions, printing zines, buying fanart and making fandom happen. Put some respect on their names.

I will never understand how antis even stumble across the fanfic/fan art they are so offended by.

I’ve been in fandom spaces online since I was 11 years old. I’ve interacted inside fandom for over 15 years.

And I didn’t see, read or interact with my first fanfic until 2022.

I had never heard of a03. I had only heard of Wattpad in passing, never visited the website. I saw a rare meme about fanfiction.net

Never once in my decade and a half in fandom did I accidentally stumble upon ANY of the types of fanfic and fan art post they say pro-fiction/proshippers (I hate using these labels but it’s for ease of explaining) say are ruining fandom spaces and being shoved down their throats.

In fact, I’d say pro shippers are the best at using the censored fandom tags on tumblr, making sure their more dark/edgy content is kept on a side blog. IT’S ANTIS WHO REPOST THESE THINGS TO GANER HATE AND MOB RANDOM PEOPLE USING THE MAIN FANDOMS TAG AND INFEST THE FANDOM.

When fans engage with their fandom, they imbue meaning into that fandom and the people and places within it. Meanings may be explicitly written into texts; they may be implicit, they may be subtext, or they may be something specific to a single fan based on that individual’s own life experiences. The meaning we take away from our fandom is often much, much more than what was put into it by its creators or owners.

Will to Power is the piece that inspired me to create this show. As someone who has written Spider-Man fanfiction, I was immediately drawn to what I affectionately called Spider-Man-Snake. The meaning that I bring to this piece is directly influenced by the meaning I have created through existing in the Spider-Man fandom. The apple is knowledge, knowledge is power, and with great power there must also come great responsibility. I was shocked that not everyone else saw it this way.

Fanworks do not need to consider the theme that fine-art pieces will be used to discuss; they only need to be inspired by or responding to one piece of art and anything you are a fan of. The biblical imagery in this piece makes me immediately want to write a Spider-Man/Daredevil fanfiction. What knowledge will they be tempted by? Only time and my creative impulses will tell!
