I Hope You’re Ready // Aaron Hotchner
The girls and I are pouring over a girly magazine in the conference room. This month’s issue has article on different sex positions. It is mainly Penelope, JJ and Emily looking over the pages while I try to fill out a case report. However, it is hard to stay focused on my work with all their murmuring.
“Hmm, what about that one?” Emily asks.
“No, no. Trust me, that one hurts,” JJ says.
Emily and Penelope drop their jaws. “You’ve actually tried it?” Penelope asks.
JJ shrugs. “I’ve done my research,” she says.
Emily eyes me. “Are you sure you don’t want to come over here?” she asks.
“Yes,” I say then look down at my work. “Hotch is gonna kill me if I don’t finish this in the next hour.”
“Well if you come over here you can find out some other things he can do to you,” Penelope says.
I quickly roll over to them in my chair. It’s just too tempting to resist. Aaron already has a lot of good moves in the bedroom, but it couldn’t hurt to bring some new things to the table.
My eyes widen when I see the positions. I literally grab the magazine out of Penelope’s hands to look at them. “Hmm,” Emily hums. “I guess there are a few things the Chief doesn’t know.”
“It’s not that,” I fight back. “Just some of these I have never even seen before. Like number 9? How do you even do that?”
Emily leans over me then laughs. “Oh, it’s really not that hard. You just take your right leg and put it over-,” she starts, but stops when the magazine is ripped out of my hands.
It’s Derek.
“What are you guys…,” he starts, but trails off. “Oh my God! You’re reading this at work?”
Of course, there is a huge grin across Derek’s face while my cheeks grow red hot. Derek lets out a few tuts. “Y/N, I had no idea you and Hotch were into this stuff.”
“We’re not!” I huff. “It’s not even my magazine!”
“Excuses, excuses,” he says. As if it could get any worse, Spencer comes up behind him.
“What is all the noise in here?” Spencer asks and looks over Derek’s shoulder.
“Y/N and Hotch are experimenting,” Derek says and Spencer immediately cringes then sits down.
“Didn’t need to know that Derek,” he says.
“Well, it doesn’t matter anyway,” I say, standing up and taking the magazine back from Derek, turning so I can face everyone. “Derek is full of lies. I am not into these positions and no one is going to hear about my and Aaron’s sex life!” I shout.
Everyone looks a little more stunned than I expected. Suddenly, there is a cough behind me. But not a real cough. One of those coughs that people use to get your attention and I think I know who it belongs to.
It’s almost too painful to turn around, but I do it anyway and see my boyfriend in the doorway. “Y/L/N,” Aaron says in a quiet voice. “Why don’t you give me the magazine and you take a seat?”
I basically throw the magazine at him then sit at the round table. Once everyone sees how red my face is they can hardly control their laughter. All the while, Aaron is stone cold and is definitely planning a very serious talk with me later.
I can’t believe I work with these jokers.
                                                        **********
I have sort of ignored Aaron for the rest of the day. However, it has come to the point of where I can not ignore him anymore. It’s the end of the day and we drove here together.
With a shaky hand, I press open Aaron’s office door. “Hey,” I call. “Are you ready?” I ask.
“Yes, just one minute,” he says as he grabs some things on his desk. “Thought you might want this back,” he says then throws something at me.
My cheeks flush red when I realize it is the magazine from earlier. “Aaron, this isn’t mine.”
He flashes me a cheeky smile. “Really? Because if it is that’s okay,” he says and I take a dry swallow.
“It is?” I ask.
“Yeah,” Aaron says as he approaches me. “I actually took a look at it myself.”
My stomach drops. “You did?” I ask then pause. “Aaron, it was just for fun. Don’t think anything serious of it because-,”
“It gave me some ideas for tonight,” he says.
I’m suddenly feeling very hot and flustered. It takes me a moment to speak because I can barely get the words out. “It did?” I finally ask.
Aaron’s hand has somehow landed at the small of my back so he can pull me into his chest. His lips stop right next to my ear. “And I hope you’re ready.”
I quickly check the floor beneath me to make sure my panties didn’t drop to the grow like it feels like they did. Luckily, there is no underwear on the ground.
I take Aaron’s hand and give him a small smile. “Lead the way.”

In Another Life // Alone Time
Aaron Hotchner x y/n
December 2013
I swirl my wine a little bit as I wait for my fiancé to come downstairs. I just fed Jane so I figured now was the best time to have a glass. I glance at my watch and see that it has been nearly a half hour. Of course, putting down two kids is no easy task. That’s why when Aaron offered to put them both to bed I happily agreed.
There is a movie playing in front of me, but I’m not really paying attention anymore. I take a slow sip of wine then set the glass on the coffee table. As I lean back, I hear footsteps tramping down the stairs. Next, I see a smiling Aaron at the bottom of the steps. “They’re asleep?” I ask excitedly.
“Soundly,” he says then places the baby monitor on the coffee table. He sits next to me, allowing me to drape my legs over his thighs.
“Ugh, my hero,” I say. “Tell me everything, I already miss them.”
“Well, I read both of them a story. Then I put Jane to bed. Then Jack begged for another story and I had to give in. So I read him another story which he fell asleep to,” he says.
“Wow, that is very impressive,” I say with a smirk. Aaron places his hands on my waist and pulls me closer. Very quickly, my lips find his. I move so I am sitting on his lap. My fiancé’s hands run up and down my back, making me feel safe. I’m so grateful for this time. Ever since Jane was born we haven’t been able to have any alone time. My kids are everything, but sometimes I just need some Aaron time.
Aaron’s hands slip under my shirt, but before he can get too far, a wail sounds from the baby monitor. My lips separate from his as I let out a sigh. “Do you want me to get her?” Aaron asks.
“Sure,” I say then slide off his lap. Aaron takes the monitor then jogs up the stairs. I take another sip of wine, basking in my alone time, but it doesn’t last long.
“Mama,” I hear my son whimper from the bottom of the steps. He has tears dripping down his cheeks.
“Sweetie, what’s wrong?” I ask as I hold out my arms. He comes running into them and nuzzles into my chest.
“I had a nightmare,” he says.
“Do you wanna talk about it?”
“No, it’s too scary,” he says.
“It’s okay baby,” I say. “Do you just want me to hold you?” I ask and he nods. So I sit and rub Jack’s back as his crying dies down. It is quiet until footsteps come down the stairs once again. This time it is Aaron, holding our baby girl.
“Would she not go back down?” I ask as he takes his spot next to me.
“No, she’s only happy in daddy’s arms,” Aaron says. He looks at me, then down at Jack, then back up at me.
“Nightmare,” I whisper and he nods. Jack seems to have perked up a little because he moves from my chest to Aaron’s shoulder where he can get a better view of his little sister. Both Hotchner men just stare down at her with soft smiles.
It makes me realize, yeah, I do miss alone time with my husband. But I would never trade this crazy family for anything.

Fathers // Aaron Hotchner
I walk into the house to screaming. My hands are full of grocery bags that I struggle to bring into the kitchen. I run into the two Hotchner boys in there. Jack’s face is red with tears streaming down his face.
“Is everything alright in here?” I ask carefully.
Aaron turns to me with a stern look. Okay, things are not alright in here.
“He took away my Wii!” Jack yells.
“Well technically it is my Wii. I paid for it,” Aaron says which makes Jack’s face grow redder.
“You are so unfair!” Jack shouts.
“I told you the rules when I gave you the Wii and you aren’t following them,” Aaron says.
“I’m a teenager!” Jack shouts. “I don’t need rules anymore.”
“As long as you live in my house there will be rules to follow.”
Jack lets out a loud groan. “Stop treating me like a baby,” Jack says.
“I need you to stop arguing with me and go start your homework,” Aaron says.
“But Dad-,” Jack starts.
“Jack,” Aaron says sternly.
“I’m not-,” Jack tries to say.
“Okay,” Aaron says throwing his hands in the air. “You just lost it for another week.”
Jack turns and storms up the stairs. “I hate you!” Jack yells then slams his bedroom door behind him.
Aaron stands hunched over the counter. I stand behind him and place my hands on his shoulders.
“What happened?” I whisper.
Aaron turns around, baffled. “He knew the rules when I gave him the Wii. He knew that he couldn’t play until his homework was done. When I came home from work he was playing video games and I told him to stop and he wouldn’t. I didn’t know-,” Aaron says then stops.
“Hey,” I whisper then wrap him in a hug. “It’s okay. He’s not going to be mad at you forever.”
Aaron pulls away from me. “He said he hated me,” Aaron says.
“Oh Aaron, I told my parents I hated them all the time. They never mean it.”
Aaron looks down. I can tell he’s hurting from Jack’s words. “Why don’t you get ready for bed and I’ll go talk to Jack?” I say.
“I-I’ll put these away first,” Aaron says, referring to the groceries.
“Okay,” I whisper then kiss his cheek.
I walk up the stairs, throwing my work bag in my bedroom then going to Jack’s room. I gently knock on Jack’s door.
“Go away,” Jack grunts.
“It’s Y/N,” you say softly. “Can I come in?”
“Fine,” he mumbles.
I press open the door and notice that Jack has changed into his pajamas and is tossing a tennis ball against the wall. “You know your dad won’t like you throwing that ball against the wall,” I say.
“Well he can bite me,” Jack says, but still stops throwing the ball.
I sit at the edge of his bed while Jack lays on top of his covers, staring at the ceiling. “Do you wanna talk about what just happened?”
“No,” Jack says. Then there is a long silence. “He just doesn’t understand. It’s like he was never young before.”
I let out a chuckle. “Yeah, it’s hard to believe he has juvenile side. What does he not understand?”
“I dunno,” Jack says. “That homework isn’t important.”
“Jack, you and I both know that homework is important.”
“Maybe it is, but it’s stupid too,” he says.
“What if we can make a new rule?” I ask and Jack shoots up.
“You can do that?” Jack asks with raised eyebrows.
“Are you kidding?” I ask. “I could convince your dad to go skydiving if I wanted to.”
That gets a small chuckle from Jack. “What if we make it so every hour of homework you do you get a 15 minute break with video games?” I suggest.
“How about a 30 minute video game break?”
“I can’t go to dad with that. He’ll laugh in my face.”
“Fine,” Jack says. “That sounds better than our current deal.”
“Alright. I’ll tell your dad the good news,” I say then push off the bed.
“Wait, Y/N,” Jack calls and I turn around. “Dad knows I didn’t mean it right?”
I give him a soft smile. “Yeah, he knows,” I say. “Goodnight,” I say then slip out the door.
My bedroom door is cracked open with a soft light coming from it. Aaron is laying in bed on top of the covers in his pajamas, with his hands folded over his chest. I quickly start stripping from my work clothes and change into my pajamas then jump into bed next to him.
I rub his shoulder a few times before speaking. “What are you thinking?” I ask. He stays silent for a few moments and when he speaks, he continues to look at the ceiling.
“I’m thinking that I’ve turned into my father.”
“Aaron-,” I say quickly.
“No, I am,” he says, finally turning toward me. “I never said it to my father, but I did hate him. Just like Jack hates me.”
“He doesn’t hate you,” I say then brush his hair with my fingers. “You know how kids are.”
“Am I treating him like a baby?” Aaron asks.
“Honey, no,” I say sternly. “He’s just a teenager with hormones going all over the place.”
Aaron sighs then scratches his forehead. “I just don’t like him being mad at me,” he says quietly.
“He’s not mad at you. He loves you. By tomorrow night everything will be back to normal,” I say.
“I just know I never what that to happen again. I never want to feel like my father again.”
“You will never be your father. I’ve seen the way you are with Jack for almost 10 years now. And I have never met your father, but the way you describe him does not match who you are.”
“But what if Jack thinks-,” Aaron starts, but is interrupted by a knock on our door.
I clear my throat then speak. “Come in,” I call.
Jack barely opens the door, but still peeks his head in. “Uh Dad,” he whispers. “Can I talk to you alone?”
“Yeah,” Aaron says then sits up. “C-Can I have one minute buddy?”
Jack nods then closes the door.
Aaron turns to me with a small smile. “How are you always right?” he asks.
I return the smile. “Just go talk to your son,” I tell him.
Aaron gives me a quick kiss then jumps off the bed and out the door. Aaron and Jack haven’t fought that bad in a long time. But that doesn’t matter. They’re better now. And all that matters is that the two most important men in my life are getting along.

BFF // Aaron Hotchner
“Look what I found!” you say, nearly yelling as you burst into your shared bedroom with Aaron.
He’s reading his book and jumps a little in seat right as you came in the door. He looks a tad annoyed, but he’ll get over it. “Where have you been?” Aaron asks. You assumed he would be wondering. You did disappear after dinner for nearly two hours with out as much as a ‘goodbye’.
“Your storage unit,” you say as you plug the enormous block into the outlet.
Aaron lets out a stiff laugh. “There could be anything in there,” he says.
“But look!” you shout as you hold the old piece of technology in front of him. Technically, it’s your old flip phone. The one you used right as you started working at the BAU. Shortly after being there, Penelope convinced Aaron to upgrade your phones for “work purposes”.
Aaron glances from you to the phone, you to the phone. “It’s an old cellphone?” he asks.
“Not just any old cellphone,” you say as you settle in bed next to him. Luckily the cord reaches pretty far and allows you to lay in bed comfortably. “My old cellphone,” you say which gets Aaron’s attention.
“How old are we talking?” he asks as he wraps an arm around you which lands on your waist.
“Like when I started working at the BAU old,” you say and the screen illuminates. “Ahh! It’s charged!”
Aaron lets out a laugh. “I’ve never seen someone get so excited over an old phone,” he says.
“C’mon, it’ll be fun,” you say. “Let’s start with pictures.”
Even though the photos are in horrible quality, it is easy to tell it is from a crime scene. “I can see your phone is filled with happy memories,” Aaron says which causes you to smack his chest.
You go to your text messages and one of the most recent recipients is Aaron. “Wow, look, at this point you’re still ‘Hotch’ in my phone,” you say. You open your messages between each other, but it’s pretty bland. “We had some exciting conversation. Hotch: ‘when are you coming in?’, me: ‘in the elevator.’. That was really sexy,” you giggle.
Aaron’s hand suddenly comes from behind you and snaps the phone shut. “What are you-,” you start to ask.
“I don’t like looking at those,” he frowns. “It reminds me of when I was so unhappy.”
You turn in his arms and brush back some of his hair. “Well look where we are now? That stuff is all just a funny memory,” you say then lean in for what you think will be a short kiss. However, Aaron grabs your waist and pulls you closer to his body.
You move so you are straddling his lap while his hands dance up your back. The kiss lingers on for a few moments before Aaron pulls away. “You know what?” he asks and you tilt your head, listening. “Those texts also remind me of how thankful I am for you. That person all those years ago was sad and broken, but you found someway to put me back together.”
All you can do in that moment is kiss him. When he pulls away he has one final thing to add. “You know you’re my best friend, right?” he asks quietly.
“Yeah, I know,” I whisper then continue kissing him. This continues for a moment before he pulls away again.
“You know this is usually the part where you tell me that I’m your best friend too,” Aaron smiles.
“But you’re not my best friend.”
Aaron’s eyebrows wrinkle in confusion. “Alright, who is then?”
“Derek,” you say as you roll off of Aaron. However, he quickly pulls you back into him by your waist so he can whisper in your ear.
“Any chance that spot is up for grabs?” he asks.
“Possibly. To the right person,” you smirk. Aaron positions himself on top of you then throws off his shirt.
“Oh, I’ll show you I’m the right person,” he says then begins kissing your neck which sends you into a fit of giggles.

In Another Life // Move In
November 2012
Aaron Hotchner x y/n
I feel light kisses starting at the nape of my neck and trailing up to the top of my ear. My toes curl, as do my lips. The kisses suddenly stop, but they are replaced by a whisper. “Good morning,” Aaron whispers in my ear.
“Good morning,” I whisper back.
My boyfriend squeezes his arms around my waist and holds me tight to his body. We lay there for a moment before I try to break free. “What are you doing?” Aaron asks.
I turn over in bed to face him. His hair is an adorable mess. I stroke my fingers through it a few times as an attempt to straighten it out. “One of us has to get Jack up,” I tell him.
“Can’t we stay here just a few more minutes?” he whines.
“Aaron, we do this every morning and every morning one of us is rushing Jack out the door and the other is almost late for work.”
“So that’s a no?” he asks with a raised eyebrow.
I finally break free from his arms and throw the covers up. “It’s a no,” I say then deliver him a quick kiss and get out of bed.
I go to the dresser drawer Aaron has put aside for me so I can keep somethings here. I expect to find the set of work clothes I left here, but the drawer is nearly empty.
“Babe, did you move my clothes?” I ask over my shoulder.
“No,” he says with a yawn.
“Then where are my work clothes?” I ask. Aaron comes up next to me to look in the drawer.
“Did you remember to replace it after last week?” he asks me. I think on it for a moment and realize that I didn’t restock my clothes here.
“Great,” I say then slip on my shoes and grab my purse.
“What are you doing?” Aaron asks.
“I have to go home and grab some clothes,” I say as I approach him. “I’ll see you at work,” I say then give him a kiss. I try to walk away, but he grabs my hand and pulls me into his chest.
“Uh, wait,” he says, but looks over my head. “There was something I was hoping to talk to you about.”
“What is it?” I ask.
“It’s not necessarily a quick conversation,” he chuckles awkwardly.
I take a step back and cross my arms. “Aaron, you’re scaring me,” I say slowly.
“It’s nothing scary, it’s just-,” he says then pauses. “I just figured since you spend almost ever night here you could move in.”
I stay quiet for a moment and think over what he said. I mean he’s right. I spend most of my time here anyway and am hardly at my own home. But if I move in, that makes things a lot more serious. But it’s not like I’m not serious about this relationship already.
“Are you sure you’re okay with that?” I ask carefully.
“Yeah, of course,” he says. “I’m ready to take the next step with you. I want the two people I love most to be under the same roof.”
“What about Jack? I don’t want to make him uncomfortable.”
“I’ve already talked to Jack about it and he wants you to move in. He loves you,” Aaron says.
I feel a little better with that knowledge, but I’m still hesitant. “I’ll think about it,” I tell him.
Aaron flashes me a confused face for a split second, but quickly covers it up. “Okay, that’s fine,” he says then kisses my forehead. “I’ll see you at work.”
“See ya,” I say then turn on my heel and leave the bedroom.
                                                     **********
I’ve been avoiding Aaron ever since I got to work. It’s not that I don’t want to talk to him, I just don’t know what to say. I don’t know if I want to move in with him or not.
“What’s wrong?” Derek asks as he approaches my desk.
I frown at him. “Nothing’s wrong,” I say, but he raises his eyebrows.
“You’re biting your nails. That means something is wrong,” Derek says. I realize that he is right and I am biting my nails. I quickly pull my hand away from my mouth and stuff it in my lap. “So what’s going on?”
I look around the room to make sure Aaron is not nearby. I see through the blinds in his office and see him sitting at his desk.
I lower my voice. “Aaron asked me to move in with him,” I say, but Derek keeps his previous expression.
“So?”
“That’s a big deal. I mean he has Jack. I don’t want to move in unless I’m absolutely sure I want to be with him forever,” I say but Derek just smirks at me. “What?”
“You two are practically raising Jack together already. I think if you weren’t sure this relationship would already be over.”
Derek does have a point. Jack and Aaron are my family. But this is still a huge commitment. I just don’t know what to do.
                                                     **********
I decided to stay at my apartment tonight. Aaron and I have hardly talked all day so I wasn’t really in the mood to stay over.
I have my pajamas on and am pulling back my covers when my phone begins to ring. Aaron’s picture pops up. I hesitate for a moment, but ultimately decide to answer it.
“Hello?” I ask.
“Hi,” he says and then there is a long pause. “Strauss just called me in for an emergency meeting regarding a case we had a few weeks ago. I have to go so I was hoping you could come watch Jack while I’m gone. You don’t have to spend the night though, it’s just till I get back.”
I sigh. “Aaron-,”
“Just can you come watch him?”
Now I pause for a moment. “Yes, of course. I’ll leave now.”
                                                       **********
I’ve been at Aaron’s for the last 20 minutes. Right when I walked in, Aaron walked right past me out the door. Jack was already asleep so all I have to do is wait till Aaron gets back.
I lay down on my normal side in Aaron’s bed and try to get some sleep. However, it only lasts about 10 minutes because a sobbing young boy comes into the room. “Y/N,” Jack sobs.
I quickly turn on the light and lift Jack onto the bed. “What happened?” I ask.
“I had a nightmare,” he sniffs.
“Oh baby,” I say and hold him against my chest. “Everything is okay. You are safe.”
His cries begin to die down so I take my thumb and wipe away his remaining tears. “C-Can I sleep in here tonight?” he whimpers.
“Of course buddy,” I say and slide him off my lap. We both lay down as Jack still has his arms wrapped around me. I slowly rub his back until I hear his breaths even out. Before too long, Aaron is back.
“What happened?” Aaron asks as he climbs into bed.
“Nightmare,” I whisper and Aaron nods.
“Well, I can take your spot and you can get out of here,” Aaron says.
I look down at a sleeping Jack and know that I don’t want to miss out on anymore of these moments.
“No, I’m good right here,” I smile at him. “And I think I’ll take you up on that move in offer. I know that this is what I want.”
Aaron leans in to kiss me. “I love you,” he whispers.
“I love you too,” I whisper back.
Aaron lays down and reaches across Jack to grab my hand as the three of us fall into sleep.

In Another Life // Marry Me
October 2013
Aaron Hotchner x y/n
I turn off the bathroom light then climb into bed where Aaron is already sitting. I come up behind him and place both my hands on his shoulders then run them down his chest. I press a few light kisses to his cheek until I can feel him starting to smile. “Well, hello there,” he says then grabs my hands.
Aaron got home especially late today from work so I haven’t really seen him the entire day. I put both the kids down too so he hasn’t been able to see them. “How was work?” I ask.
Aaron turns to he is sitting against our headboard. “It was just a lot of paper work, we’ll probably be getting assigned a new case tomorrow.”
A frown comes across my face at his words. “I know, it’s not the same without you there. Everyone is missing you.”
“I’m missing them too,” I say then glance at the bassinet behind me. “But it’s hard to be pulled away from that little girl.”
“Speaking of her,” Aaron says then climbs out of bed. He makes his way over to the bassinet and begins to reach his hands in it.
“Don’t you dare wake her up,” I warn him. He gives me a smirk then pulls our daughter out of the bassinet.
“She missed her daddy today,” Aaron says as he rocks her back and forth. He comes back into bed and sits against the headboard while cradling Jane. I lean over his shoulder to look at her.
“I swear I could look at her all day,” I say. “It’s what I do most of the day anyway.”
“You’re lucky,” Aaron says. “I mainly stare at paperwork or murderers.”
“Can I borrow her for a minute?” I whisper in his ear.
“You get her all day and you still need more time?” he asks with raised eyebrows.
“Please?” I pout. Aaron groans, but still carefully hands me our baby. I lean my nose down to her head and take a big sniff. While I do that, Aaron is rummaging around in his nightstand. “How long does this baby smell last? I swear I’ve never smelled anything better.”
Aaron turns back to me with a smile. “Why are you looking at me like that?” I ask suspiciously.
He doesn’t say anything else, but pulls out his hand that is holding a small open box with a diamond ring inside. “Marry me,” Aaron whispers.
My mouth opens but nothing comes out. After a moment of gapping, words finally come out of my mouth. “Absolutely,” I say and lean in to kiss him on the lips. I move Jane so I am cradling her with one arm so Aaron can slip the ring on my finger. “Oh my god,” I whisper.
I move Jane to her bassinet then jump back into bed. I grab Aaron’s head with both my hands. “I love you so much,” I say then kiss him again. I hold my hand back so I can look at the ring. “And this ring is absolutely gorgeous.”
“I’m glad you finally get to wear it.”
I raise my eyebrows at him. “Finally?” I ask.
“Yeah,” he says awkwardly. “I’ve had it since I got back from Pakistan.”
I’m literally speechless. I exchange glances between my new ring and my new fiancé. “Y-You knew you wanted to marry me that long ago?”
“I knew before that. I just bought the ring then,” he says.
“Oh my gosh,” I murmur, tears brimming my eyes. I straddle his lap and place my hands on his cheek. “How did I get so lucky with you?”
“I’m the lucky one,” Aaron tells me. He places his hands on my hips and pulls me into his chest. We sit there for a moment so I can listen to his heartbeat.
I pull away slowly then press my lips to his. He kisses me back slowly and makes his way down my neck. I pull his shirt up and over his head so I can run my hands over his bare chest.
Our engagement celebration only lasts for a moment because there is a loud cry from the bassinet. I move off Aaron’s lap to get her, but he pulls me back. “Let me get her,” he whispers.
“I won’t argue with that,” I say.
Aaron keeps his shirt off and goes to pick up Jane. He cradles her against his bare chest. “Does she need to be changed?” I ask carefully.
Aaron takes a sniff from her butt. Not weird though, it actually happens a lot. “No, she’s clean,” he says then gets back into bed.
“I just fed her less than an hour ago so she can’t be hungry,” I say as I lean over Aaron’s shoulder again to look at Jane.
“She’s upset because you put her back down,” he says and I chuckle.
“You might be on to something.”
We stay quiet for a moment until Aaron turns to me and kisses my cheek. “What was that for?” I ask.
“I’m just excited that I get to marry you.”

In Another Life // Holding it Together
Aaron Hotchner x y/n
September 2013
I rock Jane back and forth as she wails. I glance at the clock in her room and see that it is 3:26 in the morning. I silently groan.
She has been like this for the last five days. I have gotten maybe eight hours of sleep in that time. Every time I put her down for a nap, she cries. Every time I put her down for the night, she cries. The only time she doesn’t cry is when I’m feeding her.
Aaron is on his first case since Jane was born. While he was home, he was the one doing all the late nights. Oh how I miss him.
“Mama,” Jack whines from Jane’s doorway, eyes barely open. “I can’t sleep.”
“I’m sorry baby. I’m doing everything I can to get her back to sleep,” I tell him. “Do you wanna sleep in my room?”
He shrugs. “It’s worth a shot,” he says then pads across the hall to my room.
I continue to rock Jane back and forth, silently praying that she will just drift off to sleep.
                                                           **********
My eyes droop as I pull into Jack’s school. “Jack,” I say, keeping my eyes forward. He doesn’t answer. “Jack?” I ask again, but turn around. He is slumped over in his seat with his eyes closed. I reach back and shake his knee.
He shoots up and becomes alert. “What? What?” he asks.
“We’re at school,” I say.
“Oh,” he says. “Bye Mama,” he says then rolls out of the car.
“Bye baby,” I whisper.
I take a moment and try to collect myself. Jane is finally silent in the back seat. Maybe I could just take a nap right here? No, I can’t do that. Although it is very tempting.
My car phone begins to ring and shows Aaron’s contact. “Hello?” I murmur.
“Y/N? Are you alright?” he asks urgently.
I quickly perk up and try to be my normal up-beat self. “Yeah, I’m great,” I say, my tone changing. “How are you?”
“I’m fine. We’re getting close to wrapping up the case so I should be home by tonight,” he says. I let out a sigh of relief at his words. “How are the kids?”
Despite how tired I am, my heart swells at the plural of kid. “They’re good,” I say as I scratch my forehead. “I just dropped Jack off and school so Jane and I are about to head home.”
“And she’s been good?”
“A perfect angel,” I tell him.
“Good, good. I can’t wait to see you all,” Aaron says. “I have to go honey, but I’ll talk to you tonight. I love you.”
“I love you too,” I say then hang up the phone.
I am left in another moment of silence that quickly ends by Jane’s cries. I groan and fall down on the steering wheel. Maybe I will just take a nap here.
                                                          **********
It’s nearly midnight at the Hotchner household, Aaron no where to be found. Although, he should be home any minute. I put Jack to bed an hour ago through Jane’s crying. Jane has been a joy the last hour. She has been sobbing and I just finished cleaning up her diaper blowout.
Jane’s tears have dried up on he cheeks as I bounce her up and down. I place her in the bassinet then move to my bed. Silence at last. As much as I want to lay down, my hunger is overpowering.
I pad down to the kitchen and make myself a piece of toast. When I am halfway through buttering it, Aaron comes through the front door. Aaron gives me a soft smile and holds out his arms. I immediately fall into them and hold him tight. He smells like hotel soap.
“Tell me,” I say. “How was the case?”
“We saved a victim and caught the unsub so pretty good,” he says as we pull away from each other.
I begin to pout. “I miss being out there with you guys,” I say as I go back to my toast.
“We missed having you,” Aaron says as he comes up behind me. “The kids have been good?”
“Yep,” I lie as I take my plate upstairs with Aaron following at my heels. Well, it’s not a total lie. Jack has been perfect. When we reach our room, I place the toast on my dresser then fall into bed.
“Tired?” Aaron asks with a chuckle.
“Like you wouldn’t believe,” I say.
Aaron undresses from his work clothes and he is looking good. “Hey,” I whisper as I sit up. “C’mere,” I whisper.
Aaron crawls on his knees to me. I place my fingertips on his cheeks as his lips reach mine. “It’s agony being away from you,” Aaron murmurs against my skin. I feel myself smile for maybe the first time in a week, just basking in the joy of being in my boyfriend’s arms.
Then Jane cries.
Aaron and I both pull away from each other and exchange looks, but I can’t take it anymore. The wall breaks and tears come flooding from my eyes. “Honey, honey,” Aaron whispers as he wraps me in his arms. “What’s going on?”
“I just can’t do it anymore,” I heave between sobs.
“D-Do what?”
“Jane is crying and pooping and won’t sleep so I can’t sleep,” I complain. “I’m just so tired and all I want is a glass of wine, but I can’t have one because then it will be in my milk. Then Jack hasn’t been sleeping either because of all the crying. Aaron, I can’t do it anymore. It’s so hard without you.”
“Honey, honey,” Aaron coos as he moves me to the end of the bed and rocks me. He holds me for a few moments, but then tends to our daughter.
I wipe the tears from my cheeks as Aaron picks up Jane and she immediately stops crying. “I swear you’re the baby whisper,” I say as he sits at the head of our bed with Jane. I scoop up and sit next to him while he rests Jane on his bent legs.
Aaron wraps one arm around me as I curl up in his side. “So tell me what’s been going on,” Aaron says softly.
“I just can’t be a single parent, I can’t. Jack has been perfect, but he is sleep deprived, we both are,” I say. “It’s hard to do it alone.”
Aaron stays silent for a moment.
“Well you aren’t alone,” Aaron says.
“But you have to work,” I whine. He can’t argue with that.
“That’s true,” he coos. “But I think I know where we can recruit some extra help.”
I look up at him with a furrowed brow, but he just gives me a cheeky smile.
“There has been a certain someone that has been begging for more time with Jane,” Aaron says. I widen my eyes at him, waiting for an answer. “Penelope.”
“I can’t ask her to come help. That’s unfair to her,” I say.
“Are you kidding? She would do anything for you.”
I think on it for a moment. I don’t want to burden Penelope, but I really am desperate. Instead of talking about Penelope, I burrow deeper into Aaron’s chest. “I have a solution. Don’t leave.”
Aaron chuckles slightly. “I can’t promise that,” he says. “But I promise to be here until morning and do all parent duties till then.”
I raise my eyebrows at him. “You’re going to breastfeed her?”
“I might need your help with that part. But hey,” he says then pushes some hair behind my ear. “I promise to do anything I can to make things easier for you while I am here, okay?”
“Okay,” I smile. “I love you so much.”
“I love you so much,” Aaron says back then kisses my lips.

In Another Life // Jane Emily
A/N: The first child between Y/N and Hotch!
Aaron Hotchner x y/n
September 2013
The level of uncomfort I am feeling is indescribable. It hurts when I lay on my side, it hurts when I lay on my back, it hurts to sit. Just everything is painful. I don’t know how people do this multiple times. This might have to be my only pregnancy.
Aaron has been out on a case for the last four days and I am practically useless. So Jess has been coming over to help and take care of Jack. I don’t know how we would survive without her.
Jess left me propped up against the headboard by at least four pillows. I am nearly sitting up. However, this just happens to be the best position that I have found. I glance at my clock and see that it is nearly 2 in the morning. I have to get some sleep, but I don’t feel that happening soon.
To my surprise, the door to my bedroom opens to reveal Aaron. “What are you still doing up?” he asks as he walks in.
“I can’t sleep. I’m too uncomfortable,” I whine. Aaron gives me a sympathetic look then begins to undress from his suit. “How was the case?”
“A little complicated. We were stumped for a while till Reid had a genius moment and figured it out.”
I chuckle slightly. “He’s quite good at that, isn’t he?”
Once Aaron has his pajamas on he gets into bed and properly greets me with a kiss. “Now, how have you been?”
“Honestly?”
“Honestly,” he confirms.
“I have just been miserable. I can’t sleep or sit properly,” I say then place my hands on my stomach. “I just need this baby out.”
“It should only be a few more days,” Aaron assures me.
“Your time off starts now right?” I ask and he nods. Although him and I both know that he could still be called in at any minute.
Aaron scoots closer to me so he can place his hand on my belly. Almost immediately, I feel kicks at the top of my stomach. Aaron smiles while I wince in pain. “I’m glad you’re enjoying this,” I mutter.
“You have to admit she knows her daddy,” Aaron smiles. A true smile from him. I am lucky and see them more than most people do, but every time I see one I am overjoyed.
I place my hand on his cheek and his eyes meet mine. “This baby has no idea just how lucky she is,” I say.
“I was thinking the same thing,” Aaron says. He leans in and kisses me slowly until the kicking starts again. I place my hand on top of his hand that rests on my belly.
“I’m so glad you’re here,” I whisper into his hair.
“Me too,” he smiles.
                                                          **********
When I wake up, it’s to a jolt of pain. With my eyes closed, I reach my hand out and try to find my boyfriend’s hand. After a moment of searching, I open my eyes and see that no one is there.
I check my clock and see that it is almost 7 in the morning, which means Aaron is already knee deep in emails.
I hoist myself out of bed and waddle down the stairs. I find Aaron exactly where I expect to find him, in his office. I peek inside and see him intently staring at his computer with his glasses on. “Hey,” I whisper as I walk in the doorway.
“Hey,” he says and whips off his glasses. He quickly gets up and leads me out of the office and into the living room then onto the couch. Once I’m settled, Aaron takes the other side of the couch. “How was your night?”
I sigh. “It was rough. I had contractions nearly the whole night, but they’re at least a half hour apart and not lasting very long.”
“Okay, well do you want me to make you some breakfast?”
“Always,” I smile.
“On it,” Aaron says and gives me a kiss before heading to the kitchen.
I manage to get a magazine off the coffee table and flip through it for a few minutes, then I get bored. I move to the dining room so I can overlook Aaron in the kitchen as he makes breakfast.
“So, how has work been today?” I ask.
“I’m on vacation,” Aaron tells me.
“Listen honey, we can do this whole thing where we both pretend you aren’t working, but know you are. Or we can just talk about it,” I say as he bites his bottom lip in thought. “I really don’t mind. I like hearing about work.”
“Well in that case, Morgan is taking over for me while I’m gone and he was just asking a few questions,” he says as he butters my toast. “He says he’s going to do his best not to bother us these next two weeks.”
“Hmm, okay,” I hum.
“What?” Aaron asks as he slides the toast in front of me then sits next to me.
“I just don’t think there is anyway you can stay away from work for that long,” I say. “If Morgan doesn’t call you I’m sure you’ll lend your services.”
“That is not true,” he fights back. I raise my eyebrows at him, but still continue to eat my toast. But halfway through my first piece, pain pierces through my stomach. I lean over and clutch my stomach with one hand while my other one finds Aaron’s hand. “Just breathe through it,” Aaron coos and I do. It’s over within 30 seconds, but it was still painful.
I look up and meet his eyes once it’s over. “Are you sure these aren’t braxton hicks?” Aaron asks.
“I’m sure. These are way stronger than ones I’ve gotten earlier,” I say and he nods.
Just then, a sleepy Jack turns into the dining room, still in his pajamas. “Hey buddy,” Aaron says.
“Hey,” Jack croaks then sits at his seat. “Could I have breakfast please?”
“Yes, I will get you some cereal,” Aaron says then runs off to the kitchen. Jack’s sleepy expression quickly turns to happy when he realizes what we’re getting close to.
“Could she come today?” Jack asks excitedly.
“She could,” I say with a nod.
“Can you please, please, please tell me her name?” he begs.
“We aren’t set on anything,” Aaron says as he returns to the dining room with the cereal. Jack looks back at me from his dad and I give him a wink. I’d say we’re pretty set on the name, Aaron just doesn’t completely know that yet.
Jack quickly finishes his cereal then goes upstairs to get changed. Aaron slips on shoes even though he is still wearing his pajamas. “You’re taking him to school like that?” I ask with a raised eyebrow.
“Yeah, what’s wrong with it?”
“It’s just an interesting choice for someone who usually wears a suit everyday,” I say. “At least I won’t have to worry about any soccer moms hitting on you.”
“I think they’ve learned better by now,” Aaron says as Jack runs down the steps with his bag. “Okay, buddy let’s go,” Aaron says as he ushers him to the garage.
“Bye Jack!” I call.
“Bye Mom!” he calls back and then the door shuts. I’m still not completely used to Jack calling me mom, but I still love it.
I get myself out of the dining room chair then waddle towards the steps. Before I can even get up one step, a gush of water spreads down my legs. Oh no.
                                                         **********
Luckily, it did not take Aaron long to get back. Once he got home, we both sprang into action and grabbed our things then got in the car.
I got checked in relatively quickly and am currently sitting in my hospital bed. The contractions just keep getting closer and closer together. I know she’s coming soon.
“Aaron,” I say because he is across the room talking to the doctor. He quickly leaves the doctor and comes to my side. “Hold my hand,” I say, nearly begging.
“Of course,” he says and takes my hand.
“What’s going on?” I ask.
“The doctor is going to check to see how far along you are,” he says and I nod.
Dr. Larson soon pops out from my lower parts with a smile. “Okay, Mama it’s time to push. Are you ready?”
I look to Aaron before responding. He gives me a reassuring nod which gives me more confidence then he’ll ever know. “Let’s do this,” I say.
HOTCH POV
I lightly coo to the new bundle of joy that rests in my arms. I try to be as quiet as possible because Y/N just fell asleep.
I slowly rock my arms back and forth as my baby stares up at me. She’s calm and quiet, just like her dad. She let out a few cries the moment she was born, but since then she’s been quiet as a mouse. Her eyes flutter open and close, showing me her beautiful brown eyes.
I glance up at my girlfriend again. I can’t believe we created something so precious. I forgot that feeling when you have a newborn, but it’s all coming back. The warmth, the wholeness, the pureness. I can’t believe I have gone eight years without this feeling.
There is a soft knock at the door, then Jessica pokes her head in. “Can you take a visitor?” she asks and I raise my eyebrow, unsure. She pushes the door open a little wider and Jack carefully steps into the room. Jessica closes the door again to give us some privacy.
“Can I see her?” Jack asks softly and I nod. He comes the rest of the way over and stares down at her. “She’s really small.”
“You were this small once,” I whisper. We both stare down at her for a moment while she sleeps.
“Can I have my baby back?” I hear from behind Jack. Y/N has woken up from her very short nap, but has her arms held out for a baby.
“I wanted you to sleep a little longer,” I say as I stand up slowly.
“I can’t,” Y/N says. “This bed is lumpy.”
Finally, Y/N notices Jack and shows a large smile. “Jack! Did you get to meet your sister yet?”
“Yeah, but she’s sleeping,” he says.
Y/N scoots over to make a small empty space on the bed. “Come up here,” Y/N says. Jack hops up on the bed so he is squeezed next to Y/N. “Do you want to hold her?”
Jack nods excitedly. “Okay,” I say as I place her in Jack’s arms. “Make sure you support her head,” I add. Once the nerves go away, I realize my heart is bursting. The three people I love most in the world all in one place.
“Can I know her name now please?” Jack begs.
I look down at Y/N and smile which is all the confirmation she needs. “Okay,” Y/N says. “Her name is-,”
“Hi!” I hear from the doorway. Garcia is standing with a large bouquet of balloons. “Can I come in?”
“Yes, come in,” I say and she does. Garcia sets the balloon holder on the ground then slowly walks up to the bed. She looks down at our baby for a moment, then covers her mouth.
“Oh my gosh, she is just beautiful!” Garcia says.
“Well we think so,” I say as I stare down at her. She begins to fuss in her swaddle then lets out a loud wail. Y/N takes our baby from Jack then sighs.
“I think she’s hungry,” Y/N says.
“Okay, we’ll give you guys a minute,” Garcia says then leads Jack out of the room. Before I know it, Y/N is already feeding our baby. I sit on the edge of the bed and place my hand Y/N’s leg.
“Why are you looking at me like that?” Y/N chuckles.
I shake my head in disbelief. “I’m just so happy,” I say. “I am also so proud of you. I can’t believe you brought this beautiful, little girl into our lives.”
Y/N smiles down at her. “She is pretty perfect.”
I lean forward all the way and give her a kiss. “You’re perfect,” I whisper.
“Oh, Aaron,” Y/N laughs.
The more I think about it, the more I realize my whole life is perfect. I have a beautiful wife, two healthy children and a stable job. There is nothing more I could ever want.
I scoot closer to my daughter and my girlfriend. “Jane, how have we gone this long without you?” I ask.

In Another Life // Hesitate
Aaron Hotchner x y/n
January 2010
Despite Aaron telling me that he wants to take some time apart, my crush has intensified. He has been back at the office for a few days now and he is well-, well he’s hurting. I can’t say I blame him, no one can. He’s been harder on us than usual and when I say us, I mainly mean me. He’s been snapping at me and giving me orders that someone below me should be doing. Other than that, he hasn’t really been talking to me. It’s much different than our normal.
We have been in Minneapolis for the last few days on a case. We have narrowed down the unsub to a man named Carl Orso. We are about to raid his home. Aaron rounds all of us up in preparation. “Okay, JJ and Reid stay here to see if he comes out. Morgan and Y/L/N, go in through the front. Prentiss, Rossi and I will go around back.”
Everyone nods, but I hesitate. I feel that Hotch should sit this one out. He has hardly had any sleep. He’s not focused enough to be leading a raid. Hotch circles back to the car before we all head in. “Hey, Hotch,” I say, but he doesn’t even bother to look at me. “Are you sure you’re okay?”
“What calls for you to be asking that question?” he asks as he loads his gun.
“I can tell you haven’t been sleeping-,” I say and he cuts me off.
“Y/L/N, I don’t need you to be worrying about me,” he says, finally looking up at me. “Just follow your orders,” he barks at me then walks away.
I stand a bit stunned, then recover quickly. I meet Morgan at the front of the house so we can go in. “Everything alright with Hotch?” he asks.
All I can do is shake my head. “I don’t know,” I say. Morgan doesn’t ask anymore questions as we head to the front door. We look at each other, count to three, then Morgan kicks in the door. I go to the right with Morgan following close behind me. Suddenly, the unsub comes barreling in the room I’m in with Hotch behind him. Normally, Hotch can take anyone in a fight, but this unsub is giving him a run for his money. I freeze with my gun, not being able to fire a shot due to the fighting. Morgan jumps in and pulls the unsub back, quickly getting cuffs on him.
Hotch sits up, blood dripping from his forehead. We make eye contact and we both know that Hotch was not prepared to come in to this house.
                                                      **********
I walk slowly across the front lawn of the unsubs house, making my way towards the ambulance. Hotch sits in the back with an EMT. I stroll up next to them. Once Hotch notices me, his eyes go to the EMT. “Could we have a minute?” he asks and the EMT steps away. “Are you here to gloat?” he asks and I give him a small smile.
“No,” I say then pick up an anti-bacterial wipe from the ambulance. “I’m just here to make sure you’re okay,” I say then dab his forehead wound with the wipe. He’s silent for a few moments while I check out his stitches.
“How’d you know?” he asks.
“How’d I know what?” I ask back.
“That I haven’t been sleeping.”
I put the wipe down and sigh. “I sometimes think I know you better than you know yourself.”
He gives me a small smile. “I think that too sometimes,” he says, avoiding eye contact with me. When he finally does look me in the eyes, I want to lean in and kiss him. But I know that would be against his wishes. “I’m sorry for ignoring you the past week. I just thought it would be easier.”
“Has it been?” I ask.
“No,” he says and my heart lifts. “But it’ll get easier,” he says and my heart goes right back down again. Hotch gathers his coat then stands up out of the ambulance. “Thank you,” he says, placing his hand on my shoulder. He leaves his hand there a little longer than anyone normally would, then quickly retracts it.

In Another Life // Pull Back
Aaron Hotchner x y/n
November 2009
It’s hard to find the right words when someone dies. It’s really hard to find the words if the person who died was close to a person you love. Even though Haley was the one who was killed, the whole team was struggling.
It happened about a week ago, but the whole day keeps running through my head. Hotch’s realization, rushing to his house, hearing the gunshots over the phone. It was all too much to take in.
No one knows where the fate of the team is heading. Our leader is out on leave and may not return. I don’t know if I could come back if I were him.
We just returned from a case without Hotch and it was, weird. I found myself searching for him from time to time, but he was never there. I can’t blame him for taking some time off. But I do miss him.
Honestly, I don’t even know where Hotch and I stand. We sneak kisses and touches here and there, but we’re not officially anything more than friends. But this past week has shown me how much I need him in my life in any form.
We got back relatively early from the case so I decided to make dinner for the Hotchners. I can only make a few things and I decided to go with lasagna since it can stay good for a couple of days.
Hotch mentioned that he would be at Jessica’s house, so that’s where I take the food. When I pull up, I start to get nervous. What if I am over stepping my bounds? I don’t want to make him uncomfortable. I’m truly just trying to do something nice.
I get out of the car anyway and wobble my way to the front door. I press the doorbell and after a few moments, Jessica comes to the door. “Hi,” I say quickly. “I’m sorry to be coming by unexpectedly, but I’m Y/N Y/L/N. I work with Hotch. I just wanted to drop this off for you guys,” I say as I hold out the tray.
“That’s so kind of you,” Jessica says and takes my offering.
“I don’t want to take up any more of your night-,” I say as I step backward.
“Don’t be silly, come inside,” she says and holds the door wide open. I take a step into the living room then look around. Okay, I am officially over stepping my bounds. “Can I get you anything to drink?”
“No, I’m fine, but thank you,” I say. “I really do appreciate the invitation, but I should be-,” I try to say, but am cut off by my boss who comes down the stairs.
“Y/N,” he says, with a shocked look on his face. “What are you doing here?”
“I just wanted to drop off some food,” I say.
“Oh, well thank you,” he says. “Do you want to sit?”
I nod even though my brain is telling me no. Hotch and I sit next to each other on the couch, about a cushion length separating us. There is an awkward silence that you could practically cut through. “How have you been?” I ask.
He lets out a sigh. “It’s nice to have some time off with Jack, but not under these circumstances.”
“And how’s Jack doing?”
“He’s confused,” Hotch says. “We just need to find a new normal.”
There is another long silence. I should avoid talking about work, but the question keeps biting at me. “So, are you coming back to the BAU?”
“I want to,” he says, looking me dead in the eye. “I just need to think on it a little more.”
I nod. I look over him and he seems disheveled, but anyone would be in this scenario. Without really thinking, I reach over and grab his hand. To my surprise, he quickly pulls away. Hotch gets up off the couch and starts to pace around the living room. “Y/N, I can’t do this right now.”
“Can’t do what?” I ask.
He sighs then rubs his forehead. “I can’t be playing these games with you right now,” he tells me. I stay silent for a moment, trying to figure out what he’s talking about. Yes, I have made it clear that I have feelings for Hotch and he has made it clear he has feelings for me. It’s not like I’m playing games with him by any means. “I think we need to stop what is going on here.”
“Being friends?” I ask and Hotch scoffs.
“You know there’s more to this relationship than just that,” he says. I’m a bit dumbstruck because I didn’t realize Hotch viewed our relationship this way. Was I just being clueless?
“Then I guess I’ll go,” I say and stand up slowly.
“Thank you,” Hotch tells me then opens the door so I can leave. He closes the front door behind me once I’m outside and all I can think is what the heck just happened?

In Another Life // Restful
Aaron Hotchner x y/n
September 2013
I lay in bed, rubbing my hands over my nine month belly. Aaron has essentially forced me on bedrest. I tell him that I am perfectly capable of working, but as my unit chief, he tells me that I need to be resting. He says that his unit chief self is telling me that, although I know my boyfriend is seeping through the cracks.
I just put Jack to bed by myself, which is no easy task. He puts up a fight for one more story or one more back rub or one more kiss. I have to do all of it. I love my boy too much. After at least three stories, I finally get him asleep.
After closing his door, I waddled into bed and started rubbing my stomach. I think I am getting contractions here and there, but there is nothing steady. There is no point in telling Aaron. I think he will be coming home tonight from his nearly week long case. I can’t wait to see him. Usually, I am with him on these long cases, but I have been forced into bed. That has left me to take care of Jack, which I don’t mind at all, and just rest. I hate resting. It’s so boring.
Just then, I hear the garage open. Next, I hear keys lying on the counter, the fridge opening and closing, then footsteps up the stairs. Before I know it, the door to my shared bedroom opens with my other half behind it. “Hello,” I smile. Aaron flashes me a small smile, then throws his bag in the corner of the room.
“I’m surprised you’re awake,” he says as he loosens his tie.
“How could I not wait up for you?” I ask.
I watch as he strips from his work clothes and transfers into his pajamas. He quickly falls into bed next to me. “How was the case?” I ask.
“We caught him,” he says. “It was a close one, but we caught him.”
“I wish I could’ve been there,” I say.
“I’m glad you weren’t,” he says then grabs my hand. “The only thing that keeps me grounded is knowing that you are here safe.”
“Don’t worry,” I say then give his hand a squeeze. “I’m just fine.”
“How’s Jack?”
“He’s great. He’s excited for his little sister,” I say then rub my hands over my stomach. Aaron places a hand on my stomach. I place my hand over his and push on it. “Do you feel that?” I ask, referring to the baby’s kicks.
“Yeah, yeah, I do,” he says then moves both of his hands to my stomach. Aaron shifts down so his face is next to my stomach. “Hi baby girl,” he whispers. “I hope you’re being good to your mom. She is taking great care of you. Come when you want, but I can’t wait to meet you. Neither can your brother, he is so excited to meet you.”
Suddenly, the baby begins to kick harder and faster than before. Aaron must of noticed because he responds. “Oh, you hear me?” he asks. “Good, good. It’s your daddy. You rest until you’re ready to come out. Just know that I love you and I can’t wait to meet you,” he finishes. Aaron looks up at me with a smile which causes me to run my fingers through his hair. Aaron moves his head so it is resting on top of my stomach.
“You’re going to be an even better daddy than you already are,” I say, but my boyfriend looks up at me with a disapproving look.
“Really? Because I messed it up so much the first time.”
“Are you kidding? Because Jack is perfect,” I say and he sighs.
“That’s because of Haley,” he says and my heart stops. I always feel guilty when we talk about Haley. She deserves to be remembered. Jack deserves to know who know who his real mom is. There is no way I can live up to Haley.
“Not all because of Haley,” I whisper. “I see so much of you in Jack, it’s crazy. I can’t wait for you to parent our baby.”
Aaron takes his head off my stomach and moves his lips to mine. After a slow kiss, he whispers against my cheek. “I love you,” he whispers.
“I love you too,” I whisper then hold him close against my chest.
