This was my response to a thread on diets in a “women over 40” Facebook Group. 15% of women over 50 have serious eating disorders. Ask yourself if you have ever been able to keep this weight off longer than 1 year, or 2 years... how about 5 years? 95% of diets fail by 2 years. Come sit in my office for one day and you’ll change your mind about starving yourselves. Everyone thinks they are an expert — so I ask you — where is your degree from, who do you trust for this information you follow? Restriction leads to bingeing and weight gain. I’m not selling anything - I’m inviting you to see if there could be another way. What if we stopped fighting our bodies on a daily basis. What if instead of focusing on weight loss as a goal- we focused on behaviors that favor our health— exercise because it just feels so good, eating balanced, non-deprivational meals, getting sleep, going to the doctor— this is where our health lies. It's nearly impossible to practice curiosity instead of judgment around eating unless you can recognize the struggle and acknowledge that you're not alone. This includes words like “healthy,” “ideal,” “goal,” “normal,” etc.⁣ ⁣ Weight was never meant to be the same over time. It’s some patriarchal bullshit that our “high school” weight is what we should all be striving for, because you know, we should never age. But also we should never die and if only we can manage all those “lifestyle” changes to get down to our “fighting weight” we will somehow live forever. And if we keep our “figure” we will be loved and if we “let ourselves go” we will be alone and unhappy. ⁣ ⁣ It’s a mind fuck sending us all in pursuit of smallness if we can only walk “10,000 steps a day” to nowhere.⁣ ⁣ We are people who are in constant states of change, healing, evolving. This includes our bodies. What if we pursued freedom, liberation, wholeness? I had this discussion with a client today... she doesn’t “think” she’s “sick enough” because she’s not emaciated. And she was denied life-saving eating disorder treatment because her BMI was not “low enough.” The fact is, eating disorders come in ALL shapes and sizes, and someone who seems to be in a "healthy" body based on how they look may actually be suffering. Eating disorders are a mental illness with physical side effects, not the other way around. Our feelings about our body is very complicated. There's no getting around it! And sometimes, tolerating our bodies can feel like a really big challenge. When I am struggling with this very same thing, I fall back on gratitude. Gratitude in all of its forms is healing. But gratitude towards our bodies can be transformational. We all have something that we appreciate about our bodies, even those of us with physical impariments, those of us who are differently-abled, or those of us who occupy marginalized bodies that may be a target for violence. Maybe it's your ability to smell the wonderful cookies in the oven, or to hug a loved one. Maybe it's your skill with a paintbrush or gardening. The scale can be an emotional trigger that sets the tone for the day.
