CALCULATE YOUR CALORIES When you are just starting the ketogeic diet you want to be eating at your maintenance, the number of calories you need to maintain your current body weight. This is because the adaptation phase of switching from running off carbs to ketones can be difficult. You can use an online calculator to give yourself a starting point, so you can get adapted to keto easier! FOLLOW STRICT KETO Many people make the mistake of following keto and not tracking their macros. This leaves them not actually getting into ketosis. If you follow the macros of 75% fat, 20% protein and 5% or less net carb (Net carbs qual carbs minus dietary fiber) You will make sure you are on track to get into ketosis. DRINK WATER AND ELECTROLYTES You want to aim to get at least half your body weight in ounces of water. While also getting enough sodium, potassium, and magnesium. Add salt to your meals and try to get 3000mg potassium and 400 mg of magnesium each day. TEST YOUR KETONES Th only way you will know if your actually getting into ketosis is if you test your blood ketones. You can do this using urinalysis ketone strips or a blood ketone monitor. These can be expensive but it is good to know for sure that you are switching into ketosis. 🧀I have gotten some messages from people who are just starting or struggling with keto, so I wanted to talk a little about getting and staying in ketosis. 🔑The key to getting your body into ketosis is not about pumping tons of extra fat into your body, it's about depriving your body of 'exogenous glucose' aka: carbohydrates and sugar. 🍞 Many people in my day-to-day life (at work, etc) ask how I have been losing weight. I tell them about keto, and most respond with a gasp, and follow that up with, "oh, I can't/ could never give that up" and I can understand that, as I was once there too. However, once you eliminate starchy carbs and sugar, and your body has gone into ketosis and is working on fat-adaptation, the cravings and that I-can't-live-without-carbs-and-sugar-in-my-life feeling goes away. 🧐In my opinion, the first two weeks of keto are the hardest. Your body is going through a lot of adjustments, and it can be frustrating trying to figure out what you can eat. If you stick to the keto way of eating and you are diligent in it, you will get in and stay in ketosis. 💪Once you have gotten into #ketosis, your new main goal is to become "fat-adapted". This means that your body now prefers fat as the primary fuel source - as opposed to glucose. The only way to become #fatadapted is by keeping your body in ketosis for an extended period of time. That means... no "cheats", especially in the beginning, because it confuses your body. The more you go back and forth, the longer it takes to become fat-adapted.
