summer
i long for the breeze of summer
without the bite of winter storms
i yearn for the lightening mornings
not the breath-snatching alarm in the dark
i wish for long hazy evenings
with just a jacket to keep off the creeping chill
not leaving work with the sun already set
wrapped up to the eyes in layers of wool
i long for the warm glow of skin
after a day spent out of doors
surrounded by people who make you glow
inside as well as out
i want flowers and sunshine
and the clink of ice in my drink
i want to sleep with windows flung wide
a honeysuckle breeze dancing across my cheek
i want evenings sat around a fire
sharing stories and secrets and promises
and ‘these are the best days of our lives’s
and ‘we’ll remember this day’s
and your hand in mine as the sun finally sets
pink and amber strewn across the canvas of the sky

happysad
i am happysad
i am joyfulheartbroken
to see you so happy
you’re not happysad
you’re happy singularly
and it makes my heart swellbreak
my heart swellbreaks to see
how your heart glows
you are radiant while i am dulled
i smilecry when i think of you
and think of you and her
and the beautiful world you share
i am happysad
because i want to live in that world
but that can’t happen when you are happy
for me to carve out my place
in your beautiful world
you’d have to carve out a piece of your heart
i don’t want that
i would never want that
i want you to stay happy, singularly
so i’ll stay happysad
happysad isn’t so bad
not while you’re happyhappy

i am dust
I am dust
Swirling in the streaming sunlight
Rising and falling with the people and the wind
Soon I will settle
Who knows where
Only to rise again
And again
And again
I will join with some motes
And drift away from others
My path is infinite and unknowable
But you can see me, most clearly
When you throw the curtains wide
And let the day pour in
And there I’ll be
Dancing in a sunbeam
I am dust

reflection
pink cheeks
dusted with freckles
purple circles ring her big brown eyes
she quite likes her eyes
though she feels it’s cliche to say so
a small mouth
lips kept shut
a nose that she thinks looks fine from the front
but a little odd in profile
hair that never hangs quite how she’d like it
i look her in the eye and say
let’s do this

the state of it all
look at us
three in a row
one with tear-stained cheeks
and a vacant stare
one with bloodshot eyes
and heavy breaths
one with a clear head
and a sigh on her lips
how did we get here?

liar, liar
liar, liar
tongue on fire
i can’t speak for the molten bronze
pouring from my lips
i must not tell lies
the scars etched into my hand
a constant reminder
thou shalt not tell a lie
oh lord, smite me down
should razor blades fall off my tongue again

the doe
a clearing in the woods
a rustle of leaves
the undergrowth shivers
a doe springs into view
our eyes meet
she sees me
she knows me
she is me
a moment passes and she’s ready to go
another spring and another rustle and another shiver
and she is gone
back into the belly of the forest
perhaps we’ll meet again someday

nourishment
recipe for a spring day:
one sun - to kiss your face
one breeze - to dance across your skin
one ice cold drink - with ice to crunch
a handful of people you love
a large pinch of storytelling
a generous helping of laughter
one cosy jumper - for when the evening creeps in
snacks snacks snacks - as many as you can carry
hugs - to taste

happy place
toes in the sand
salt on my lips
the waves run over my feet
and the wind blows through my hair
the sky is wide and blue
the air is crisp and cool
i close my eyes and breathe in
and i am home

end of the party
there’s glitter in the carpet and in your hair
bottles and cans and inhibitions scattered across the floor
sweat, alcohol and unspoken words tinge the air
it’s sweet and stale
it’s the smell of dancing too hard and singing too loudly
it’s the smell of secret glances and carefree laughter
it’s the smell of kitchen conversations and mr brightside
it’s the smell of a time you know you’ll feel nostalgic about in twenty years
when you recall your student days to your children
and reminisce with old friends about the times you had in the good old days
because these are the good old days
and you’ll miss them before they’re even gone

spring cleaning
i dusted the cobwebs out of the corners of my mind
and found amongst them long forgotten stardust
tiny glistening fragments i hadn’t seen or thought about in years
i gathered them up and gently placed them into shoeboxes and suitcases
and tucked them away for safekeeping
and when the time is right
i will open the shoeboxes
and unzip the suitcases
and throw the stardust back up into the sky
where it belongs
and where everyone can see it glitter and refract
and perhaps even gather dust for themselves

hyde park sunset
walking down the hill
the sky is ablaze above the rooftops
i will never grow tired of this view
the world feels wide
i feel like i could hop up onto the terraces
and dance across them into the sunset
into the amber and pink
into the crimson and peach
into the sky
