I wish I was the ocean
inexplicable tides
the sky wouldn’t ask me to explain
I wish I were the sky
Full of birds
Impervious to the burden of reason
I wish I were an empty field
Full of the latency of life
With faith fortified by ever-returning seasons
I wish I was a tree
Swaying
Unaware of the breeze
I wish I were fire
Burning just because
A match touched me
I wish I was something that is
Without having to be.

I’m Not Sorry About It
Vengeance is the forest fire I set
With unabashed content
Branded my heart
With lust for revenge
The pain I endured
Is permanent
The scars can’t forget
The fire I set
I won’t never regret
And you deserve to wallow in
The ashes you left.

If You’re Lucky
If you’re lucky
Your path is always lit
By a streetlight
If not the sun
If you’re lucky
The flowers bloom
But do not wilt
Despite the drought
If you’re lucky
You have your umbrella handy
When the sky starts
growling and dripping
If you’re lucky
Sickness will pass over you
Medication will be occasional
Maladies never chronic
If you’re lucky
You could say you’re blessed
But don’t
Because it would imply
That some are cursed
Just thank the stars
For not falling
Thank the Red Sea
When it parts before you
Just be thankful
That you are lucky.

Heavy
gravity is an enemy you don’t want to ever meet
it will let you do horrible things, like fall off buildings
It will let the rain fall towards you
It will let the waves dissolve the rocks
It will turn the seconds
into sand.
But the worst thing gravity will do
is hang like a rock in your heart
make your feet drag behind you
get heavier the farther you walk
get stronger the higher you climb
The thing about a force of nature
Like water or wind or fire
Is it’s indifference
how it has nothing to lose
and all the time in the world
to create and destroy.
But it will not destroy me
Because I’m a force of nature too.

People say…
Now is all we have
but I prefer the notion
that nothing changes
without
—starting ——
at one specific
point in time
like a day
or a second
or a year
or you could
call it
[[[now]]]
if you want.

Fistful of Moonlight
fistful of moonlight
dripping through desperate fingers
this is
the last of it
before the starving dark
smoke signals spiral
invisible against
the sky
the last of the night fire
smoldering and too weak to
return to burning
welcome to
the salt-less ocean
waves of indifference
apologies to the water
it isn’t listening
a death inevitable
to mortals
exposed to nature’s
fundamental unkindness
the sunrise
asks forgiveness
for the sunset’s disappearance
night
echoing forever
regardless.

She’ll take the train
Like anyone else
But waiting at the station
Has taken her nowhere
So she walks down the tracks
When the train comes
Her stop will be
Exactly where she is.

She balances on the tips of trees
Along the vague line between their shadows and the bright white snow
Outline determinate -not to arrive somewhere, just to keep walking.
Whether across fields dull or fields sunlit
Mostly, she just balances on the edge that divides them.

Unwritten
In the narrowing tunnel of isolation
Lost in the trailing echoes
Of metaphors I will never write down
Never share
Never tell
The words are stranded inside me
You want to know what it’s like?
It’s like a stuttering monologue
Unreachable, even by those
Who would read the words
If I could only write them down.

In the End
I will put you in the pile
Of all the good things
That will never be again
Like a leaf in fall
Like a hand full of sand
I will put you on the hearth
Like a loved one who has passed
Framed inside a memory
Like a tide called back by the sea
Like a wave rushing out from under me
I will put you outside
Let you rot in the rain
Let the earth have you back
I have no right to claim
I will say goodbye
To your ashes
With a heart of wanting
With a soul still mourning
Like a riverbank
Dry and thirsting.
