I think that these two would be friends. They have a lot in common. They’re both childish villains with god level power that are not really evil, and are just lonely and want friends.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And they both end up becoming friends with the hero.

Owl House fans, tell me if this sounds familiar:
Thousands of years ago, there was a child who had immense psychic powers strong enough to shift reality, but was incredibly lonely with nobody like them to play with. They wreaked chaos across the land until the planet was near ravaged, causing the ruler to seal them away in a tomb for thousands of years, never aging until they once again broke free.
This is the main antagonist Yugi of the Toonami classic Tenchi in Tokyo, a character of which is the inspiration behind Eda, and now plenty of reason to believe the influence for The Collector.
I haven't watched the full anime myself, but I've seen enough and done enough research to know this is far beyond coincidence. I highly suggest looking up some clips online because it truly is uncanny.
The characters share the same backstory, the same motivation (wishing to create a world of their own in which to play), the same power set, express the same fears of doubting whether others are true friends or not and being all alone, and have similar relationships.
The Collector has King, whereas Yugi (the girl in question) has Sasami. Yugi tries to convince Sasami to come with her to create a world made for just the two of them, where they can play forever without anyone's interference. Sasami says they are just children, and wants to see her family and friends again. Yugi attempts to kidnap her and force her to comply for her own good, until Sasami tells her off and wonders how she could be so cruel. Yugi laments that true friends are fake, but lets Sasami go and retrwats (before she is promptly talked down and invited into the family, if she can learn to trust them).
Yugi's solution to her own overwhelming power is to be put into some kind of cryosleep chamber so she can age appropriately and reunite with everyone in some years' time. Sasami visits every night to tell a bedtime story about her day went.
Another interesting fact is that Yugi and the Empress who imprisoned her were once basically family, which is something speculated upon a lot within the fandom.
All of that to say, I could see a similar ending taking place in the Owl House given how alike the plots are already. There is also some intrigue in the way Yugi splits her personality, literally creating a more vengeful side driving destruction, and a friendly side she uses to play with Sasami. There's lots of theories that The Collector has split sides to themselves, and it will be interesting to see if that makes it to canon.

Now that the topic started. What other shows and anime has the main ‘villian’ as an overpowered child, that needs family, not being ‘defeated’?
Like Collector(i hope xD) and that Yugi character from Tenchi in Tokyo? also is it this one?

Stayed up too late, started thinking about an alternate story for the Tenchi series...
So, I don’t know why it took me 20-something years to even consider the possibility that the reason Tenchi is just plain not interested (at least, in a general sense) in any of these ladies is; Tenchi is gay. This dude is attracted to other dudes. To be fair, I don’t think he even knows this, he lives in the woods with his dad, his grandpa, and a bunch of space alien ladies. How’s he gonna even know what his options regarding sexuality are? This is where the whole Tnechi in Tokyo thing becomes interesting...
He finally has the chance to do “normal” young adult things, including meeting more people and what-not. He can also just... see other relationships, finally. He still doesn’t get what this means for himself, because he’s Tenchi and he’s a dink, but there is the beginnings of an awakening going on. Alright, that brings us to Sakuya; she was created entirely to be a “distraction” for Tenchi, and her entire world literally revolves around him. When this gets challenged, she has a break-down, unable to deal with the fact that she has no life outside of being an agreeable girl, unlike most of the others in Tnechi’s life, meant to keep his attention... rather than have her simply vanish after this realization, imagine a different scenario!
Tenchi insists that Sakuya should be able to learn about who she really is, just like he has. Instead of just liking whatever he likes, Sakuya is encouraged to try more food, listen to more music, watch more movies, read more books, and everything else, so she can have enough experiences to have real opinions. This would indeed bring them closer together, and Sakuya finds that her romantic feelings for him are genuine... and while Tenchi is still hesitant, he finds that he doesn’t want to shy away from her affection.
Then the reveal with Yugi happens, and the mirrored conflict of trying to create an illusion that will seem like the perfect friend for Sasami. Both Yugi and Sakuya have not been allowed to be who they truly are. When things get settled and the fighting is over, rather than fall into another slumber, Yugi lives with everybody at the Masaki house, and she sort of gives “true life” to the companions she created. This lessens the overflow of her powers slightly, making it easier to manage, but means she can’t control them anymore. They all find their own paths, including Sakuya. She still has her whole life revolving around Tenchi, and as he moves back home after graduating, Sakuya explains that she wants to travel alone for a while, but keeps in touch.
Perhaps a year or so later, everybody at the Masaki house is excited because they received a letter of a surprise return! In the afternoon, they all wait happily... and eventually see a young man walking up to the house. His hair is different. He’s changed his name. He’s changed a LOT. They still recognize who this is, and finally, Tenchi understands his own feelings. So! Trans boy Sakuya, and Tenchi gets a boyfriend~
Also, Mihoshi and Kiyone are also a couple, like that is just a thing. Ayeka and Ryoko can have themselves some new love interests too (I’m not opposed to them being together either, I just like the potential of them being so focused on Tenchi for so long, they have to finally switch gears with new people who are very different)

My Review of Trigun
Tumblr media
How did I get into this anime? Let’s just say this was one of those animes that used to air on Saturday nights back in the day that I would every now and then come across while waiting for either Full Metal Alchemist, InuYasha, or Cowboy Bebop to air. But I never did watch a full episode or know a damn thing about this anime. So I’m just jumping into this anime blindfolded. All I know is that this was Johnny Yong Bosch’s first anime role.
Tumblr media
Who is Vash the Stampede?
A frequent question that comes up throughout the series! Rumor has it that he wears a long, red trench coat and sports a Mohawk hairstyle. Some say he’s a notorious lecher. Many recount him shooting up their villages to a pile of rubble just for the heck of it. He has quite the reputation as he has a $$60,000,000,000 bounty on his head and is often known as the “Humanoid Typhoon”.
Tumblr media
In reality, Vash the Stampede is…a bit of a dingus. He just happens to be at the wrong place at the wrong time and things kinda get out of hand. But that doesn’t stop two insurance agents (Milly Thompson and Meryl Stryfe) from following him around to confirm Vash’s identity and keep his actions to a minimum. At first, it’s hard to tell if he’s a stupid-genius or just flighty and gets lucky one too many times. But when shit goes down, don’t be surprised when you see this doofus get serious.
BETWEEN THE SUB AND THE DUB: Okay, what sad company did this use to belong to, Geneon, Bandai, or ADV Films? Oh, Geneon! That means good voice actors from L.A. put in really shitty roles. On the contrary, this was a fairly decent English dub. And on a severely positive note, this was indeed Johnny Yong Bosch’s very first anime role (and a main role at that). This was like fresh off his time as a Power Ranger! And I gotta give props for giving this guy a chance at voice acting. This role was the launching point to what has been a very successful career for Bosch. As for the sub, let’s just say I’m happy any time I get to hear Hiromi Tsuru in something besides Dragon Ball. Here’s what you might recognize these folks from.
JAPANESE CAST: *Vash is played by Masaya Onosaka (known for Bill on Pokemon, Isaac on Baccano, Jadeite on Sailor Moon, Kero on Cardcaptor Sakura, Leeron on Gurren Lagann, France on Hetalia, and Spandam on One Piece)
*Meryl is played by Hiromi Tsuru (known for Bulma on DBZ, Ukyo on Ranma ½, Yubel on YGO GX, and Mika on Gravitation) [R.I.P.]
*Milly is played by Satsuki Yukino (known for Kagome on InuYasha, Mion/Shion on Higurashi, Tae on Gintama, Amakata on Free!, Hiiragi on Natsume Yuujinchou, Mutsumi on Love Hina, and Yoruichi on Bleach)
ENGLISH CAST: *Vash is played by Johnny Yong Bosch (known for Ichigo on Bleach, Lelouch on Code Geass, Makoto on Free!, Izaya on Durarara, Artemis on Sailor Moon redub, Koizumi on Haruhi Suzumiya, and Yukio on Blue Exorcist)
*Meryl is played by Dorothy Elias-Fahn (known for Kaoru on Rurouni Kenshin, Naru on Love Hina, Tomoe on Rozen Maiden, Hakuei on Magi, Houki on Fushigi Yugi, and Amane on Tenchi Muyo GXP)
*Milly is played by Lia Sargent (known for Dorothy on The Big O and Judy on Cowboy Bebop)
Tumblr media
FAVORITE CHARACTER: Milly! I don’t need a reason, it’s Milly!
SHIPPING: I didn’t really start thinking about shipping until more than halfway into this series. I thought there might be something between Vash and Meryl, but then again maybe not! Then I saw the backstory of Vash’s “younger days” and falling for the one woman who showed him compassion.
Tumblr media
Yes, this is the same woman we consistently see in Vash’s flashbacks, Rem. Ooh boy, it’s one of those stories! So yeah, never mind my thinking with Vash x Meryl ever happening. I feel like Vash will mourn Rem’s death for a long time that I don’t think the whole thing with Meryl will ever work.
Tumblr media
And as for Wolfwood x Milly…
FUUUUUUUCK! WHY DID YOU RUIN THIS CUTE COUPLE?!
MILLY WAS HEART-BROKEN!
…At least she got to have one night of passion with Wolfy-boy before the unthinkable happened.
Tumblr media
THAT DARN CAT: If you watched this series, you might have noticed a little black cat spotted in nearly every episode. It’s there in the opening theme. It’s there in random places throughout the series. It’s there in the ending theme. What’s up with this cat? Well, there are a lot of theories surrounding this particular cat (or Kuroneko). Some say it’s really Rem inside that cat since you see it in literally every episode around Vash. Others say it’s because the creator of Trigun wanted to just mess with your minds with the kitty walking around in random places and towns. Seriously, it will always appear in every new town Vash and the gang comes across! As an avid cat enthusiast, I’m fine with whatever the result. Just as long as no harm comes to the little Kuroneko.
HALFWAY POINT: Halfway into the series we notice something more when it comes to Mr. Vash the Stampede. First of all, those horrifying scars all over his body! Second, that mysterious girl he often thinks about. I mean, we see flashes of her in the opening sequence. And third, the reason why he never kills. Vash has the ability of causing so much damage when pushed to a breaking point. One of the many reasons why he’s known as the “humanoid typhoon”! And that was perfectly shown when Vash chases the residents out of a town (so there would be no casualties), totally demolished the town during a fight, and made an indent on the moon!
Tumblr media
But the story takes a sharp-left turn into WTF territory when we learn about WHAT exactly Vash is. Vash is a plant. Vash also has a brother named Knives. And while Vash has a mentality that all beings have a right to live, Knives has a “kill them all and let God sort them out” point of view. Now the existence of Vash and Knives came with a lot of controversy, especially in the ship that they were on. But that girl who Vash cares for, Rem cared for them regardless of what they were. Rem had high hopes for a peaceful world with coexistence. Too bad Knives had other motives and killed her.
ENDING TO TV SERIES: Vash has tried so hard to keep Milly, Meryl, and Wolfwood out of harm’s way. He knows there are some pretty bad people after him, including his polar-opposite brother, Knives. Vash hates death and wants to save as many people as humanly possible. He doesn’t want to see any more needless death. Probably from his flashbacks and losing Rem! Unfortunately, this doesn’t go so well.
Tumblr media
I can see how iconic this death was now after witnessing it. Wolfwood, the priest who would hook up with Vash every now and then when they’re up against some ruffians, now finds himself in a crucial decision. He gets orders that he must eliminate Vash. And Wolfwood ends up dying instead in a very dramatic death scene. God-damn! And just that scene where Milly is sobbing freakin’ eats you up inside.
At least she had one night of passion before the unfortunate happened!
Tumblr media
Vash hates the thought of having to kill anyone. But he might not have a choice if Knives is coming after him and even hires a powerful foe from a previous episode and the guy that killed Wolfwood to take you out. Once Vash met up with Knives, he winds up having some pretty sick flashbacks of Knives. But our homeboy was able to take out Knives, the desert area gets water, and…
I’m gonna have to read the fucking manga for more, right?
Tap dancing fuck!
Tumblr media
BADLANDS RUMBLE: 12 years after the series ended, Japan decides to release a side-story in the form of a movie, bringing back our favorite characters like Vash, Wolfwood, Milly, and Meryl. And yes, reuniting the cast…in Japan.
By 2010, Geneon was as good as dead and FUNimation licensed Trigun. In short, they managed to get Johnny Young Bosch to reprise his role as Vash the Stampede. But everyone else was replaced. And surprisingly, the people they got to do Wolfwood and Milly were pretty freakin’ close to their original voices. Meryl’s voice, come on I know Luci Christian any-damn-where! Vash helps a young lady take out a big-bad guy (who turns out to be his father). And it has the feel of the original series where it’s set in a western town with lots of booze and shoot-em-ups! It’s an interesting side-story to the Trigun trilogy.
Trigun was a pretty good anime. I mean, not one of my favorites, but I can definitely see a lot of people sticking by this classic. Maybe you can chalk up my blah attitude to the fact that I’m not fond of westerns and I kinda took it out on Trigun. Or the fact that there was so much more that the anime could have covered before the end and the ending kinda felt off to me! Like I thought I was expecting more. But I suppose that’s what mangas are for. To be honest, the stories that really grabbed my attention were the back-stories with Vash and Knives and Wolfwood’s final episode.
*sniffles* At least Milly got one night of passion before he died!
If you would like to check out Trigun, all the episodes are available through FUNimation and Hulu (in both Japanese and English). And if you really like the anime, why not purchase the hard copies? Both the series and movie are available for home video.
Okay, that took me a while, but I’m glad to finish Trigun. What’s next on the FUNimation list?
Tumblr media
EEHHHHHEEEHHHE
Fuck is that supposed to mean? What is that? Is that even in English?
Tumblr media
YOU WILL BE HORRIBLY MUTILATED: The Isekai
Do you mean Re:Zero? That’s great…but that review’s not ready yet. And it probably won’t be until after April 2021! So let’s cast caution to the wind and pick another FUNimation licensed anime.
You’re watching Sarazanmai next. It’s best if you don’t ask questions.
Sarazanmai? The fuck does that even mean?!
Tumblr media
OH. MY. GOD.

I don’t really have a lot that I hated. The grosser cartoons I guess? Anything with a lot of disgusting humor? I don’t really remember shows I hated much, probably because I didn’t really watch them for more than an episode or so.

Well, I just finished Tenchi in Tokyo, and my final thoughts? It’s really not as bad as everyone says it is. But that may be the nostalgia filter talking. I like it better than the third movie, that’s for sure.
I always had a feeling Yugi would be redeemed at the end.

Anyone else have that one character that they really care about that no one else does?
A character that’s from a show that most people hate. And as a result there’s little to no fanart, and or fanfiction of that character.

16, 26, and 27 for the anime ask. 💌
Thanks I never get these anymore lol
16. 10 best animes you have watched
(I just wanna preface this saying that there are some anime that are absolutely should be in my top 10 but i’m not counting them, being Lupin III, One Piece, Dragon Ball/DBZ, Detective Conan etc.)
Well that’s a tough one lol... I know my top 5 but... top 10? gotta think hard about that one
10. I’m legally obligated to have Fullmetal Alchemist in this list lol and personally I’m giving it to ‘03 cuz that’s just the one I grew up with and have more memories of (Brotherhood can share 10th, Kelly, don’t worry lol)
9. Mobile Fighter G Gundam: In my 25 years of life it may singlehandedly be the dumbest anime I’ve ever watched but it is a MASTERPIECE lmao where else can you find a show where a “regular human being” can just kick away a skyscraper and then his master summons his gundam, his master’s horse, and his master’s horse’s gundam and just think “this is fine”
8. Tenchi Muyo: Tenchi Universe: Okay so this is my most recent addition but it once I started watching it it felt like i was an incomplete human being before it lol. My friend absolutely wasn’t kidding when he said this is THE harem anime
7. Episodes 1-62 of Rurouni Kenshin (Cuz they’re the canon parts), tbh if they animated the Jinchuu arc it could probably be higher but having 33 episodes of straight filler to end the series really killed it for me.
6. uhhhhhhhhhhhh Yeah i’m not gonna lie my bottom half of my top 10 is really hard to think of lol. like these could be moved around a lot so I’m gonna just throw FLCL here as a placeholder lol.
OKAY NOW THE THINGS I’M SURE ABOUT
5. Cowboy Bebop: If you’ve watched anime, you’ve probably seen this so you know why lol
4. Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann: I like big mechs, Kamina’s a legend, Simon’s a god basically, ROW ROW FIGHT THE POWAH so yeah
3. Magi: great series, still needs a season 3, manga ended very unfortunately lol
2. Space Dandy: It’s literally just “What if Cowboy Bebop was on acid” and it delivers lol. Like... it’s a kind of stupid that I just relate to. I love all of the characters, and I love all of the serious moments that the show brings too. (Also it saved 2014 for anime)
1. Do I actually even have to say it lmao?
YU
YU
HAKUSHO
STARRING MY MAN
YUSUKE URAMESHI
(Honorable mentions to My Hero Academia, Dr. Stone, Rising of the Shield Hero, Granblue Fantasy, and Big O)
26. manga you have read all the was through
Okay uhhh... Rurouni Kenshin (The original not the new arcs cuz Watsuki can’t be supported no more lol) Medaka Box, Gamble Fish, Magi, Food Wars aka Shokugeki no Soma aka Shokugeki and Chill, I’m caught up on Detective Conan and Blue Exorcist, Yu Yu Hakusho (obviously), Tokyo Ghoul, Assassination Classroom, uhh... also caught up on Yumekui Merry and Shield Hero, and I think that’s it?
27. anime you plan to watch in the future
Well my friends gave me make a list of 90s anime to watch soooo
rn I’m watching Slayers
then next  Berserk
Utena
 Fushigi Yugi
His and Her Circumstances
 Big O (Again)
Zoids Chaotic Century
Serial Experiments Lain
Dirty Pair
Gokinjo Monogatari
at some point i might try to squeeze in Sailor Moon with the new dub too

First of all thank you 'silverlady7' on Reddit for discovering the following, I would not have known at all myself. I think we can pretty reliably figure out who The Collector is because of this - so this is just going to be my full analysis post. Long read ahead.
The Collector is most likely based off of Yugi from Tenchi in Tokyo, which did air on Toonami in the early 2000s. Yugi was an incredibly powerful child who was imprisoned in a tomb for three thousand years after she and the creatures she created ravaged the planet she came from, though in her mind they were just playing. It seems she was conscious all those years, but completely alone, and never aging past the mind and body of a six year old.
The thing that locks this in is that we already have a reference to this show - Eda's design and personality was directly based off of Ryoko.
Tumblr media
It makes it more interesting with the use of these floating rocks around the Collector's little prison bubble, which can be seen in the anime as the way to seal / defeat Yugi where she's literally begging not to be left all alone in the dark again.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
She's ultimately redeemed at the end by the main character (in one of the fastest redemptions I've literally ever witnessed from watching the clip, lol). It's fair to say we can expect that to happen in the end with The Collector - and I'd prefer it greatly, I'd like Belos to remain the main big bad.
It bodes well for the idea that King and the Collector will become allies too. Not during the redemption part, but before that. Even while Yugi has reawakened and is doing her most villainous deeds on Earth, she creates an alternate persona for the sole purpose of being able to play with her only friend Sasami (who is in another connection, the princess of the planet that Yugi destroyed thousands of years ago).
So, up to this point: The Collector was literally just a kid drunk with the sheer power he held, who one day went too far and was imprisoned for it. They learned to want revenge solely for the sake of it, after being lonely for thousands of years.
Now, part 2.
The Collector wasn't even from the Demon Realm. They're from a third celestials dimension.
Tumblr media
Now this is a very famous painting called the 'Garden of Earthly Delights' by Heironymous Bosch depicting eden, earth, and hell. Bosch was a big inspiration for The Owl House - Dana cites him and his works multiple times as the aesthetic behind the Boiling Isles. Boscha you might notice, is also named after him.
Tumblr media
Oh yeah, the whole show is based off of religion. I first got the idea of the Collector being a (fallen) angel because of the oddity of Belos deciding to put so much trust within him - despite the Collector also being magic and an inhabitant of the Demon Realm.
The theory has a lot of weight with his aesthetics and the mural paintings from King's Birthplace. Their design directly invokes the sky - the sun, the moon, and the stars.
Tumblr media
The Collector's imagery is all over the temple, but in this mural I believe the comet coming down could be a sign that the Collector was 'born' from a comet falling from the heavens, which stranded them alone on the Boiling Isles those thousands of years ago. Furthermore and back to Yugi, she was likewise sent out on a comet that eventually found it's way to earth.
The mural and whole design is also an interesting signal that the relationship between the Collector and the Titans may not always have been so fraught, or really wasn't that much at all. I don't think you'd decorate a temple / your baby's nursery with the symbols of your species' greatest enemy all over the place. I believe it may have just been the fallout of two kinds of godlike beings who's ideals eventually clashed with each other; which carries on every other theme in the show so far about families being torn apart.

(Not defending Sakuya [my jury’s still out on her, only because I keep forgetting she exists] but wasn’t her personality/attitude in part Yugi’s plan? So that way Yugi could keep an eye on how Tenchi acts while away from the girls? That’s how I remember the series justifying Sakuya’s existence, and giving Yugi more to her villain side :P [I really like yugi as a design choice and character villain tho’ ] )
// IM UNFOLLOWING YOU ASAP WHAT IS THIS BETRAYAL????
Yugi’s shadow or some part of her however you wanna call her. Think Ryoko mentioned that she’d more or less bee like Sakuya whenever she awakens in the last episode. Though, I did enjoy Yugi and the friendship she forged with Sasami.
I seriously found this to kinda be like DOD, but the villain has a lot more depth to her though and I did feel sorry for her.

I just freaking LOVE Ryoko, OK. If it wasn’t for her I wouldn’t have even cared about the show. Also, this-

Tenchi himself might be half-way decent if he actually had a personality. Mihoshi and Kiyone would be the cool gay aunts if the show knew how to do it right (and I’m pretty sure Sasami would also date girls, especially since any of her antagonist characters like Yugi and Misa have crushes on her)
