i’m sure this has been mentioned but we need to take a second to appreciate the character growth dean has from season 1 to 4. he used to be the attacker, the shoot first ask questions later, don’t question orders and follow dads lead kind of guy. he was raised that way, raised a soldier. but his interactions with early, god’s soldier cas really shows that he grew out of that mindset. its almost like a mirror of who dean used to be before he realized that john actually wasn’t a perfect man and fucked up a lot. him saying that you always have a choice??? think he learned that the hard way when he disobeyed his dad by saving sam and selling his soul. i think dean regaining control over his own free will because of his dedication to protecting sam, and it being made really fucking clear through cas, is going to be the end of me

Dean gets tattoos, and as he does, he tells the tattoo artist his life story. This is a post-15x19 fic told from an outside perspective and it is so well-done

On a similar note, psalm 40:2 is a great pre-series Dean, future-Cas fic. I am a bi Dean believer but this fic did sway me toward the gay Dean camp because it’s simply so good.

Dean has a ghost following him around as he tries to start a life post-series, and for a while, he can’t figure out what’s happening. I love nothing more than Dean telling people he and Cas were married because he doesn’t know how else to explain and this fic delivers so hard

On a different note, this is one of my favorite Claire fics. It looks at Claire’s relationship with Cas and the impossibility of it, and it’s so artfully done.

Bus Loop Madness by batz_in_blue

Literally just a “what if everyone lived, Jack was a toddler, and they all picked him up from school?” AU. I audibly laughed while reading this, and it’s an essential pick-me-up from the heavier fics.

More of my favorite sobsicles fics include: gorging myself on you, still can’t get full (insatiable), and he’s back (with a mind of his own), six hundred sundays (and many more), oh sooner or later it all comes down to faith, things happen (they do, they do, and they do), according to all known laws of life, and profoundly bonded (by law)

Also, honorable mentions to Ninety One Whiskey, which is such a good fic, and Make a Believer Outta Me, which is a Hocus Pocus AU that is honestly just a fun time.

so the most recent fics I’ve read on my kindle are the first two parts of the time has come today series by teen_dean (@urne-buriall on tumblr I think). and these are so good. I’ll elaborate more in my fic review but I am excited to share the cover I developed for my kindle collection because I really enjoyed going through different iterations of this cover. I’m just posting the cover I landed on for now, but I think I will share some of the other iterations which include design choices that I cut and edited at length(in another post or reblog later).

fic review: I’m not always one to love casefics, watching cases passively on screen is one thing, but I can’t always immerse myself in a case to keep interest. I’m more one for character dynamics and the dynamics here are so interesting and introspective and funny I can’t get enough.

When it comes to the characterizations the author really nails it too. They are so close to canon that when I inevitably dissociate from atmospheric chemistry seminars and start thinking about supernatural, I can’t remember if something happened in their fic or on screen. I love these characters and teen_dean obviously does too because they treat their characterization so carefully. The cover I designed references scenery and plot points related to the case part of the fic, but I wish I could have incorporated the deep and thoughtful character analysis that is part of this fic.

And the imagery, particularly the west coast imagery, is. so. good. Very rarely am ever I struck with the desire to draw imagery described in writing, but it struck me at multiple times throughout this. most noteably the cas in the orchard paragraph highlighted in one of my pics towards the end of young hearts (will it be my first castiel fan art??? I certainly hope so.) chef’s kiss.

I really thought I would take a break after finishing young hearts, but I wasn’t ready to not know what happened to teen dean and past-cas in the next fic so I’m reading the rules of have changed today now and I have no regrets.

some notes on the cover design: I’m not sure this translates to the end result, but the glowing text of the title/author/everything-else was meant to represent the flickering lights of neon signage you might see in a dive bar. The description of Schaffer’s bar at the beginning and end of the first part is rich and another example of really capturing the feeling of canon (which I should mention is something the author does really well through scenery too). I don’t think I necessarily got the colors right (I initially imagined a larger color palette), but I’m feeling pretty good about the glowing aspect of it. In a print book format, I’d like all of the red to be metallic embossed.

Its very faint, but I included the silhouette of a mountainscape with silhouettes of dark watchers watching in the background. I think you have to zoom in to see them though. So I included a zoomed in image of two of the dark watchers. See if you can spot the other two!!

The last thing I wanted to mention is that I know arimaspians are typically one-eyed (on their heads). I took a creative liberty and put an eye on the hand.

How much of it, I wonder, is Moral Law that the torturer is damaged and how much is actually that the damage is self-inflicted, in the sense that Dean thinks he shouldn’t like it, Mr. Black and White no Grey (at this point in the show, at least)

Yes! Sam believes in his ‘cause’ and so isn’t at all tortured by what he’s doing. And as much as I love him, Dean’s anguish is better/more complex.

Do you have any TV show recs with really good romances?

oh boy, do i! one thing about me? i’m gonna watch a show for the romance subplot. but also this is such a broad topic, i’ll try to narrow it down into two categories: show recs with romance as a main plot, or at least a good majority of the plot, and show recs with romantic subplots that aren’t the main focus! so without further ado…

starting with the former:

bridgerton. i know there’s a lot of mixed feelings about this show, a lot of them are definitely valid, and while the first season romance is kinda meh (and questionable), the second season makes up for it completely imo. i was obsessed with kanthony for a good few months after s2 came out, just because the chemistry between the actors was just so potent and explosive. it’s a true enemies to lovers trope if i’ve ever seen one and it’s just so well done imo

one tree hill. early 00s cheesy teen dramas are kind of my kryptonite and oth is probably the king teen drama of all imo. i wouldn’t say the romance is the main plot of most of the show (and not a lot of the romance is great 😭), but it is a major plot point of a lot of the seasons. i’m recommending this for one reason and one reason only: nathan and haley. it’s a classic popular guy x nerd girl and they get together after she starts tutoring him in secret and i just love what their relationship turned out to be. haley is a badass and i Love her and naley basically raised me, so that’s why it’s here :)

doom at your service. honestly, i could recommend quite a few kdramas, bc a lot of them do have what i consider “true” romantic main plots, but i thought i would narrow it down to one. it’s about this young woman who has an extremely shitty day and wishes on a shooting star for the world to end, not knowing that the spirit of Doom himself is actually listening. idk how else to describe this show honestly, the main couple between the young woman and Doom is just soooo so so so good, it’s so sweet and very romantic, i just really can’t recommend it enough.

as i was starting this list, i realized i didn’t have very many true romance shows so let’s move onto the next category, which are the romantic subplots 😭

marvel’s runaways. i think i would maybe recommend this show before everything else just because it has a lot of similarities to gen v and the romantic subplots are *chef’s kiss*. i LOVED karolina and nico, one of my favorite wlw ships, and i also really loved gert and chase as well. it did, unfortunately, get cancelled pretty early but still well worth the watch imo.

agents of shield. another marvel show, honestly one of their most underrated shows. i’ve never really been super interested in the mcu, but i loved some of the older, adjacent tv shows (aos, runaways, CLOAK & DAGGER.) my favorite romantic subplot in this show is fitzsimmons, one of my FAVORITE friends to lovers ships, i think the way they were developed was so perfect, had just the right amount of pining, angst, and slowburn. i also love mackelena and may and coulson!

the wilds. okay, so i have a complicated relationship with this tv show, but just know that s1 is AMAZING. shelby and toni are another one of my fave wlw ships and don’t even get me started on leah and fatin…they weren’t a crackship, it was real to ME. i don’t wanna talk about s2, but s1 is definitely worth the watch.

anne with an e. gilbert and anne. that’s all i have to say. if you liked the rivals to lovers aspect in limoreau, you’ll love shirbert. also, it’s just a very cozy and comforting watch.

the good place. this show had me fucked up but in a good way. the romance between eleanor and chidi isn’t the main focus, but i think it adds so much to the characters development and to the plot of the show. even the crackships are good, tahani and eleanor had great chemistry, and jason and janet were just hilarious.

alchemy of souls. another kdrama and i want to preface this by saying kdramas, especially costume dramas like this one, can be super hard to get into. they’re very long (episodes can go up to an hour and a half) and often veeeery slow, but it’s TOTALLY worth it in my opinion because this show has one of my favorite romances EVER. that first season ending? oh it’s so good. i binged this in like a week and i couldn’t watch anything for a while after because i couldn’t stop thinking about it.

mozart in the jungle. probably the most obscure show on this list, and FARRRR under appreciated. as a classical musician who is currently studying music in university, this show was right up my alley when it came out. the romance between hailey and rodrigo is slow and a bit subtle at first but they were such a fun and dysfunctional duo that somehow fit together perfectly. they just got each other perfectly, imo. the ending left me heartbroken a bit, but i’ve since come to realize it was the best possible ending they could’ve given us and i’ve made peace.

Pushing open the door to the small apartment, Isabelle is immediately assailed by the scent of vanilla and cinnamon, the balmy air tasting spicy and sweet on her tongue as she inhales the delicious aromas. She smiles, delighted, and moves deeper into the apartment. She pauses, leans casually just inside the archway of the kitchen to take in the scene before her. Can’t suppress a fond chuckle at the sight of Maia staring down baked goods in her pajamas.

The young Alpha stands at the center of the chaos, hands fisted on her hips, loose red tank top dusted in flour and sugar, glaring the steaming mixture on the stove into submission. Her curls are a wild halo around her head and the humidity in the air leaves a fine sheen of sweat on her dark skin that makes Izzy want to reach out and run her fingers over every exposed inch of flesh. Around her, the kitchen looks like a war zone. Apple peels litter every available surface, the sugar is flopped over like a drunken sailor, its contents spilled across the linoleum floor below.

Izzy’s heart clenches. It’s the most beautiful disaster she’s ever seen.

“At least I’m putting these apples to good use,” Maia mutters, casting a quick grin over her shoulder before turning back to her bubbling confectionary concoction. She stirs it gently, sprinkles in another pinch of aromatic spices and hums in satisfaction.

A couple of months prior, Maia helped smooth the transition for a pair of brothers wanting to move to New York.  They’d inherited their late grandfather’s apple farm but, having been recently turned, they were largely unfamiliar with the politics and customs of the Downworld, were unsure how to start the relocation process.

Maia, beautiful, amazing woman that she is, had been quick to absorb them into her pack, introducing them to the important figures in the local Shadow World and teaching them about what it means to be part of a pack. In return the brothers had gifted her with a massive bushel of fresh apples from their first harvest.

That had been just a few days ago, and while Maia has already given away a large portion of her haul to her packmates and friends, she’s now using the remainder to make apple pie, pecan apple crumble cake and what appears to be cinnamon apple sauce.

Izzy has a sneaking suspicion the pie is for Alec. Maia knows her brother has a terrible weakness for sweet things—though he’ll deny it with his dying breath—and even though she would never say it aloud, the wolf has developed a fond attachment to the Head of the New York Institute.

The thought makes something warm and tender unfurl in Isabelle’s chest and she finds herself moving without conscious thought. She curls her arms around Maia’s middle and nibbles sweet, sticky sugar off the slender curve of her neck. “The pie’s for Alec, isn’t it?”

“No…” Maia grumbles, pausing to press a quick kiss to Izzy’s cheek, smearing flour across her face in the process. “The cake is. The pie is for you.”

Isabelle grins. She considers herself many things; fiercely loyal, intelligent, dangerous…but a chef she is not, and this makes her all the more appreciative of her girlfriend’s culinary prowess.

“Mmm, you’re the best,” she whispers, peppering a line of hot, open-mouth kisses down the column of Maia’s throat, nimble fingers creeping under that loose red tank top to press against the warm, smooth skin of her stomach.

“Of course I am,” Maia scoffs haughtily. The effect is ruined by the breathy quality of her voice, the uptick of her heartbeat.

“How much longer do you think you’ll be?”

“Not much. The apple sauce is about done, I already shipped your brother’s cake off via Daylighter Courier Service,” here the Alpha grins deviously, “and the pie should be coming out of the oven in about 7 minutes.”

Izzy hums in appreciation. “Excellent. In that case, I’m going to run us a bath and you can join me while the pie is cooling.” Pressing another quick kiss to Maia’s shoulder, she untangles herself from her lover and leaves to do just that. She has the rest of the evening free and plans to spend it worshiping her girlfriend.

And eating pie.

Supernatural Musings; The Human Condition

You know, I’ve been thinking about Cas and Dean. And how delicious they are as a pairing. I don’t know what it is about the will they/won’t they dynamic that is just *chef’s kiss

For me it started with the TV show Castle almost exactly to the day 10 years ago, when I happened upon that show. So it’s not just queer storytelling, it just occurs more in queer storytelling by default for obvious reasons. I had been watching Supernatural for years at that point, first almost religiously and then casually. Never pinged Cas and Dean as into each other but that was because I was a tween and teen that never even considered the possible existence of a queer romance. In general. At all. I considered Cas Dean’s other brother and that was that. But brothers don’t...act like that. Looking at this show through a straight and decidedly young lens I missed all of the signs on my initial watch. Now, looking through a queer lens I can’t unsee the signs. But here’s the thing I personally am not in the habit of making something queer that isn’t.

Since Castle there’s been Once Upon a Time and SVU, another one of those I’ve been watching since I was about 12, and now Supernatural.

And I think I do understand why those relationships are so delicious. It’s because they’re based in friendship. Which usually means the characters and stories are well-written, there’s a lot of meat to those stories, a lot of nuance and lots of chapters, a lot of depth, because almost everyone understands friendship and someone once said that love is friendship caught on fire.

I do wonder what it says about the human condition then that we as a species are willing to let our mirrors, the characters we write, suffer for love only to leave them stranded without it. Why those stories are so popular even though the conclusion is pain. Utter desolation and devastation.

And I realize it’s about hope, the miracle of possibility. 

But what I’ve realized is that to me, now, what is compelling is love granted. Irrevocably. Reciprocal. Like in GAP The Series. You get the same will they/won’t they dynamic, the same rollercoaster ride, the same well fleshed out friendship component. But it ends in love granted, not eternal suffering. Not hopelessness. And I’ve reached a point where I believe that’s the better story.

So if you’ll excuse me, after tonight I have a date with destiny. Creating the life I want for myself using all of my energy instead of pouring parts of it into stories of heartbreak and hints of hurtful hope like this one.

confession: I don’t think I read sasha’s graphic novel, and if I did it was back in elementary school. but I did watch a lil recap on tadpole and there was something that I think is really fun for the au:

tadpole was never told who his father was, while hawkfrost wound up being molded into tiger star’s right hand man (cat?) and defined by his loyalty to their father.

once sasha isn’t around anymore, I imagine the only one keeping tadpole’s memory alive is mothwing. so eventually, mothwing dies and joins starclan (or doesn’t, not as punishment for not believing in them before but because she rightfully doesn’t trust them). that means that mothwing enters the afterlife and tadpole enters the after-afterlife at the same time. (big day for hawkfrost! also I love how mothwing who spends a lot of her life not believing in ghosts has two ghost/spirit brothers. I like reading her as not believing in ghosts because believing that one of her brothers is essentially undead and evil is emotionally harder than believing that her brothers are just gone.) I think I’m going to go with the idea that living cats remembering you keeps your spirit from beginning to fade, I know the books are inconsistent about it though.

so tadpole arrives in the duplex and he doesn’t know why. even though he’s been around for a long time, he’s a forever kitten. he’s lost, scared, and alone.

hawkfrost does rounds around the duplex, recruiting new arrivals for tigerstar. he pulls up ready to intimidate and possibly recruit the newcomer, but when he sees that it’s tadpole he stops in his tracks.

he feels an uneasy tightness in his chest. he hears himself call out to his brother, hears a name that hasn’t left his lips in seasons and seasons.

“Tadpole? Is that really you?”

“Yup, I’m Tadpole, nice to meet you! What’s your name?”

and for the first time in his (after)life, hawkfrost doesn’t know what to say.

he finds tadpole on a solo patrol around the duplex without tigerstar, and he’s relieved. his brother doesn’t recognize him and he’s relieved?

he’s confused. shouldn’t he want tadpole to finally know about their father? tigerstar is always the answer after all; following him is just what hawkfrost does. that’s how he knows how to be, and anything else isn’t imaginable to him. he’s never been led astray by tigerstar, except for... all the times he has been.

(have you ever known something before you even acknowledge to yourself that you know it? that’s what hawkfrost does. he knows deep down why he isn’t giving this kit over to tigerstar, but he won’t admit it even to himself.)

hawkfrost hides tadpole away for as long as he can. he wants to give him the kithood he deserves. he feels guilty for getting out of the flooding house before him — wait, is that guilt? hawkfrost hasn’t felt guilt since he was a young, living cat in the old forest.

when hawkfrost and tadpole talk, it’s weird like you said since now they’re both simultaneously the big brother. hawkfrost looks after him, but he’ll always be tadpole’s little brother at the same time.

he’s taking care of this little kit, but he’s also still playing sidekick to him. going along when he wants to play pretend, yes-and-ing his goofy ideas. he owes it to him.

it’s when tadpole is at his happiest and boldest that hawkfrost feels the sharpest stabs of guilt in his heart. he’s just a kit. tadpole was only just a kit like he is now, and he died because of him.

tadpole was only a kit when he drowned, and for that hawkfrost feels a scorching regret that he hasn’t felt about anything else since then. he thought he’d buried it, buried the way they never got the chance to bury his brother.

but then again, he was also only a kit back then. he wouldn’t blame tadpole if it’d been the other way around, would he?

hawkfrost asks tadpole that one day. he knows he’s asking too much of this kit, his big-little brother. but he needs to know.

tadpole is taken aback, his eyes wide. hawkfrost braces himself for his anger, but tadpole just buries his face in his brother’s fur as he gives him the biggest hug a little kit like him can give. he doesn’t say anything.

that’s all he needed to say.

this all happens just before hawkfrost starts helping bristlefrost and her friends without admitting it. tadpole’s arrival in the duplex changes him. here’s the big brother who’s missed out on the whole rest of hawkfrost’s life, and what does he have to show for it? what is he supposed to tell tadpole about how he lived his life? I think that’s the push that gets hawkfrost to introspect.

hawkfrost also gives them the upper hand when tigerstar ultimately comes to try to take bristlefrost’s radio — he betrays the og traitor. and tadpole helps!

Reunion

Still shaken upon finding his siblings at the front door, Klaus had done little more than to welcome them into the formal sitting room. While they sat on the stiff, elegant couches, it took every ounce of control for him not to pace. Instead, he half-hid behind a chair, his hands clenched on the backrest. “So... This is a surprise.”

Rebekah looked so earnest, like she could jump from her seat at any moment to give him a hug. “A good one, I hope?”

Apparently, the letters he’d sent after Mikael kicked him out never reached them; they’d had no idea where he was or how to get into contact. Young and angry, Klaus had felt utterly rejected. He changed his name, moved as far as he could with limited funds, and made a new life for himself. It would be a lie, however, to claim that he hadn’t missed his family. “Not a bad one,” he decided with a growing smile. “How did you find me?”

Elijah fidgeted only slightly. “Mother passed,” he said in that grave voice of his. Odd that it hadn’t changed much over the last ten years. “Father was adamant you not be invited to the funeral, but she had some letters saved for us. The ones you sent after...” He broke off, a deep discomfort settling over the room. Clearing his throat, he managed a weak grin. “Once I knew you had tried to reach out, I hired an investigator. I wanted to call, but-”

“But Bekah was ready to knock on your door,” Kol interrupted, dodging the smack to his shoulder. The easy way they silently bickered left Klaus longing for the relationships they might have had if not for Mikael. “And we couldn’t let her tell you she was the only one who wanted to come.”

“Because we did,” Elijah said as he leaned forward on his knees. “Finn wanted to be here as well, but his wife is on bed rest with their third child. It just wasn’t possible.”

He nodded automatically, not upset in the slightest. “I understand, I’ve been worried that Ca-”

The front door opened without warning, and his wife shuffled in with grocery bags. “Sweetheart, you’re not supposed to be lifting things.”

Caroline gave an affectionate roll of her eyes, shaking the light bags she carried. “Just the pastries, I left everything else in the car,” she promised. “But they didn’t have my mocha donuts, so will you please go find some for me?”

About to argue that she shouldn’t be eating coffee anything, Klaus suddenly remembered they had an audience when her mouth fell into a surprised O. With a sheepish grin, he helped her over the chair he’d used for support. “You did always want to meet my siblings,” he joked.

“Preferably not while I’m the size of a blimp,” she grumbled before smiling down at her belly. “So, what did I miss?”

The Mikaelsons seemed a bit dazed at the picture they made, their long-lost brother doting on a perfect stranger obviously pregnant with his child. Klaus wasn’t sure which amused him the most, Elijah’s dumbstruck confusion or Kol’s vague discomfort despite relishing in such awkward situations.

Rebekah, however, was not quite as amused. “You’re married?!”

i bet i made this post before but disregard whatever i said. this is what i think now

season 2 - despite being a cas stan i really do think this season was the best written, the best acted, the most well rounded, the most satisfying, incredible showstopping etc etc

season 5 - unlike most cas girls, it took me until here to fall in love with him. this is also when i started watching live :’)

season 13 - feels like a proper sequel to everything that spn is. also it’s the first season EIGHT YEARS without crowley, who i only kind of liked in s5 and s6 and who i hated in s7 and beyond. i do not miss him even a little. sorry crowley fans

season 14 - michael!dean has my WHOLE heart. we are ignoring the end of this season. the first three quarters of it are perfect. i would have put it above even 13 if they hadn’t fucked it up so badly

season 11 - THIS WAS SUUUUUCH A BREATH OF FRESH AIR after the horrors of seasons 9 and 10. was it perfect, no, but it gave us eileen, it gave us lucifer actually being scary, more complexity re: chuck than all of season 15 did, and also billie AND amara, my fav girlbosses

season 4 - while i simply don’t care for sam and dean fighting, everything else about this season FUCKS

season 6 - i have such mixed feelings about 6 because i love so much of it and also hate so much of it. however it does contain THEEE cas monologue and it’s also the season cally and i started writing @cambionverse​ in so <3 tbh this actually sort of ties with 4, but i put 4 higher because of cas’s entrance

season 1 - ohhhh my god they are so young. oh they have no IDEEEAAA. also the only proper john season

season 12 - this is overall a SUCH bad season but the mary winchester content is [chefs kiss] also the destiel content in the 11th hour really fucks

season 8 - there’s some really, really, REALLY good moments in this one but i spend most of it wanting to kill both sam and dean with my bare hands. normally when they fight they depress me but they and both so bitchy in season 8 i don’t even care anymore i just want them to SHUT UP. anyway this one ties with 12 because they’re both such mixed bags but i put 12 higher because i’m a mary stan

season 7 - despite the absence of cas this season would have been all right if they hadnt also ditched the impala, had sam and dean fight over stupid shit AGAIN, and KILLED BOBBY. the premise of “strip everything away from sam and dean” does not fucking mean “strip everything from this show that made it fun.” meg and hallucifer are the ONLY things that saves this

season 3 - writers strike + overwhelming sense of inevitability and dread = i usually just skip this one entirely. it ties with 7 though because like in 7 even though i hate the season-long arc it really has its moments (samulet my beloved). i put 7 higher for meg

season 10 - i’ll never forgive them for charlie but some of the demon dean/mark of cain stuff fucks. at least it’s not season 9, i guess

season 9 - without a doubt THEEEE worst season of this accursed show. consent in every possible form ignored and also just bad writing across the board. i will never forgive them for doing this to castiel

i did not rate season 15 because i dont know what i think of it. i’m still baffled. get back to me after my inevitable rewatch

Can I just say that I watch that American pie SPN music video like every day of my life? The finale left me with an open wound because it didn’t give me any kind of goodbye to any of the characters (which is honestly bottom of the list in terms of that episode’s offenses) but that video like...chefs kiss. I feel simultaneously at peace and overwhelmed w emotion. You are perfect and also I hate you. I have never felt as much as the moment where we flash back to young Sam, Dean, and Cas during the lyric “the three men I admire most / the father, son, and the holy ghost.” It kisses me on the forehead as it tucks me in and then also keeps me awake all night.
