Would the canon selves have any reaction to the poly shenanigans happening in the au, or would that happen in canon too?

Forgive Me i've started talking about something only tangentially related:

i'm gonna be a canon toh polycule truther til i die. i have two incredibly large complex polycule charts (one for the adults and one for the kids) that threaten to cover the entirety of both the boiling isles and connecticut by 2025

this is going to sound very strange and pathetic but bear with me. i am aware that polyamory was not intended in the writing and i am also aware that some people hate polyshipping of found families. we have different personal preferences, that's fine.

but toh is literally one of The Only pieces of media i've Ever seen that 1) validated that the found family stuck together being enmeshed best friends for life, and 2) wasn't weirdly meanspirited toward polyshippers/multishippers about it?

i've also had my feelings hurt by a lot of other unrelated pieces of media wrt polyamory lately which makes toh even more special. like i don't think you guys know what a Big Deal it is that everyone has matching tattoos and clothes and movie nights and whatnot..... and there was Never any meanness about drawing Clearly Demarcated Lines about Who Is Together and Who Isn't?? there weren't even any jokes along the lines of luz and hunter being asked if theyre dating and retching comically.

like. every single detail put into the epilogue was explicitly about reinforcing that these people all Fucking Love Each Other, that the canonically platonic relationships are no less important than the romantic ones, that they haven't all split off into their little monogamous pairings, and that they all have strong individual relationships with one another.

like i interpret it as polyamorous because that's what i like doing, because i'm very annoying and project my polycule onto everything. but it is genuinely so fucking special that i CAN do that without needing to overwrite canon or wince my way through a handful of mean jokes?

Hey do you happen to know of any resources for someone in Iowa looking to get into native plant gardening? Thanks in advance! (Love your blog btw)

*cracks knuckles* sorry for keeping you hanging since November 3rd, homie, but I'm back home and down to get started!

Before I do, a special reminder that I'm not based in Iowa! I don't think I've ever even set foot in Iowa. I'm a Florida girlie lol. However, I will do my best to give you my advice and find some resources for you!

In my experience, many native plants grow slowly from seed. This could be because I mostly prefer perennials (I am way too lazy to replace an annual every year), but they can take awhile to germinate and an even longer while to size up. I've gotten seeds that say to wait upwards of 3 weeks to see any germination, and that's often after waiting a month or more for proper cold stratification! All of this is just to say--you gotta have a bit of patience when it comes to all gardening, but especially with native plants!

If you can get your hands on some seeds now, they'll likely need cold stratification. Fortunately, cold stratification is happening right now--put the seeds where you want them to grow, and let chilly winters do the work for you! Needing cold stratification basically means the plant has evolved to know it needs to wait until after winter to start germinating, so as things warm back up in spring, your seeds'll start growing!

Once they start growing and get established, they'll really start going--if they're in their perfect conditions, they'll be more than ready to take over a bit and manage on their own! Keep an eye out for watering needs, but generally I find native plants don't need much when it comes to fertilizer and pesticides. If you don't want things to spread a lot, you can always choose to grow certain plants in pots instead--or if you're really determined to grow a plant your soil isn't quite right for, a pot does wonders. My soil isn't very moist, so I grow a good chunk of my swamp milkweeds in pots to keep a better eye on their care.

Iowa's got a handful of growing zones going on, so knowing what the zone for your region is will help you pick the best plants! You can also pick plants known to have grown historically well in your region--I've seen plant range maps break things down by counties for my state, which helps give a good idea of whether it's a good idea for me to grow something touted as a native to my state. It's entirely possible for something to be native to your state, but not your half of the state, for example!

Browsing through a couple of sites, I hope these'll be helpful to you!

This is a link to Iowa Native Plants, which has a nice primer on the importance of native gardening as well as a few guides to native plants in their Finder tab! They also seem to sell a hanfdul of books on native gardening that may be an interesting read for you!

My Home Park appears to have a lot of information on native plants, and sells native plants that can be shipped to your state! I can't say I've ever had a plant shipped to me before, let alone from them (they don't service my state) but it could be worth a shot! If anything else, could be a good source of information! They also have a blog, and a feature that lets you mock up a garden to see what it'd look like (I didn't try it though). They also seem to service North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, Ohio, West Virginia, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Maine.

The Tallgrass Prairie Center links to a ton of resources on learning about native plants, planting them, landowner incentive programs, and organizations you can join that are full of others who are passionate about native plants! The Tallgrass Prairie Center itself aims to establish and protect native plants, restore ecosystems, and increase awareness and appreciation of the Tallgrass Prairie Ecosystem. I think their site's definitely worth a look-through, or you can use it as a bouncing off point to find other sites full of info!

The Iowa Native Plant Society is a nonprofit organization full of people who are enthusiastic about native plants! They host field trips, workshops, have a newsletter, and more! It could be a fun way to learn more about native ecosystems on their trips, and if they're anything like the native plant society for my state, the calendar on their site will probably start lighting up with different chapters' native plant sales as we get closer to spring, so keep an eye out! They've also got books and lots of resource links on their site!

Oftentimes when I look up information on how to grow a particular plant in my state, the university extensions office is one of the best resources. As such, I think the Iowa State University's Extension and Outreach website is likely to have some good info for you about gardening! I've also in the past emailed some staff from various offices questions about native gardening and gotten good answers, so they're definitely a resource to be utilized!

I almost forgot to link the Xerces Society! The Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation has a primary focus of protecting insects in the US, but that often goes hand in hand with native plants, so they're a great resource for learning about plants and the insects that rely on them! Especially helpful is their Pollinator Conservation Resource Center, which has lists of plants and suppliers by region! You can also find just their plant lists here!

Speaking of plant lists, The National Wildlife Federation has a list of keystone plants by ecoregion! Keystone plants are highly important, as they're vital to the lifecycle of many species of insect, which then help feed birds and other creatures--you get the picture. I used the National Wildife Federation a good bit when I was writing my Biodiversity Saga on increasing biodiversity in your yard/on your balcony/in your area on a budget.

iNaturalist is a fantastic website for cataloguing the cool insects you find in your new native garden, as well as learning about the variety of plants, animals, insects, etc. that are in your area! Make an account and just vibe around!

Books can be a great resource! Unfortunately, my attention span is frequently lacking when it comes to books, and I definitely haven't read any that focus on Iowa's native flora. However! I've got a few general books that are nice reads, so you can definitely see if you can find these in a library or online (I'm including Thriftbooks links because fuck Amazon).

Hellstrip Gardening by Evelyn J. Hadden is a book I read last month that honestly inspired so many new projects out of me that next year is gonna be busy. Might as well get a healthy dose of inspiration now so you can do some planning and be roaring and ready to go come spring! I liveblogged it on my gardening blog, and shared some of my favorite notes as well!

Attracting Native Pollinators by the Xerces Society is a book that offers a generalized view on why its important, ways you can utilize native plants at any scale from swaths of farmland to a school garden or a small yard, and provides lists of plants that can be good for your region near the end! They also have Gardening for Butterflies, which I honestly haven't read yet, but I checked it out from the library so Mayhaps Soon. PS: you can buy Attracting Native Pollinators and Gardening for Butterflies from the Xerces site directly, and support their work! However. Hoo buddy, the pricing.

My final message to you, young padawan, is to grow milkweed. If there's a milkweed native to your state, grow it. If there's several native to your region, grow a ton of it. Milkweed is the host plant for Monarchs, but it's also such a high-value nectar source for so many other insects you've just gotta try and grow some in my book. Also a lot of the sites I saw for your state had pictures of blazing star and black eyed susans and let me tell you. Plant those. You'll have so many happy pollinators.

It’s astounding to me that, even tough a fetus has no brain activity until 5-6 weeks, it is considered alive but patients with no brain activity are considered brain dead and we can “pull the plug”. Brain dead means a person is on artificial life support and has no brain functions; they will not regain consciousness or be able to survive without mechanical support. Even when their heart is still beating, we are within our rights to do this because, without brain activity, the person is legally dead. The same logic can be applied to a fetus with no brain activity: a fetus cannot live without our bodies acting as life support. But go on and tell half the country that a heartbeat determines life in order to further control and oppress them.

It’s astounding to me that no one can force me to be an organ donor or force me to give my blood, even if it means saving someone else’s life. I have that right. I have bodily autonomy over that. But I could potentially be forced to give birth to a child I don’t want, that I can’t afford, that puts my life directly in danger, that was conceived through sexual assault or incest or rape, etc. with no exceptions. A fetus could override my bodily autonomy and have more of a right to my body than I do. Hell, I have more bodily autonomy as a corpse then I would if I ever became pregnant if Roe v. Wade is overturned, because its illegal to even ask someone to give up their bodily autonomy once they've died, even if it means saving someone else's life. No one can take anything from your corpse -- donating your body to science or taking organs you no longer have a use for -- unless you have given specific, prior consent before you died.

It’s astounding to me that forced pregnancy is listed as both a war crime and a crime against humanity under the United Nations. Forced pregnancy is defined as when a person becomes pregnant without having sought or desired it, and abortion is denied, hindered, delayed or made difficult. The UN is international law and, to my understanding, international agreement is a self-executing treaty, which has the same effect in domestic courts as an act of Congress and therefore directly supersedes any inconsistent state or local law. If RvW is overturned and abortion is made illegal in some states, people all across the country would be subjected to forced pregnancy and be victims of a crime against humanity under UN law.

Here’s the breakdown on abortion rights at the time of the draft:

Expanded access: the right to abortion is protected by state statutes or state constitutions, and other laws and policies have created additional access to abortion care: California, Connecticut, Hawaii, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Vermont, and Washington

Protected access: the right to abortion is protected by state law but there are limitations on access to care: Alaska, Colorado, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Florida, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Montana, Nevada, and Rhode Island

Not protected: abortion may continue to be accessible but would be unprotected by state and district law. In some of these states, it is unclear whether the legislature would enact a ban if RvW is limited or reversed, but concern is warranted: New Hampshire, New Mexico, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, and Virginia

Hostile: these states and territories are extremely vulnerable to the revival of old abortion bans or the enactment of new ones, and none of them has legal protections for abortion so they could immediately prohibit abortion entirely: Alabama, American Samoa, Arizona, Arkansas, Georgia, Guam, Idaho, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, North Carolina, North Dakota, the Northern Mariana Islands, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming

A healthy reminder that getting rid of RvW only ends access to safe abortions. We can only hope that this draft is thrown in the dumpster. If it’s not, then the country will be divided almost in half into abortion havens, where care would continue to be available, and abortion deserts, where it would be illegal to access care. People had abortions for centuries before RvW, and people will find a way to have them again if it is overturned. But the problem is that the old methods, even herbal remedies, led to untold deaths and can have lifelong complications.

Again: you’re only getting rid of the right to safe abortions, not abortion itself.

“So where is he?” Beth questioned over facetime. 

“Uh, he said he was going downstairs to make a work call,” Molly shrugged, “I told him I would probably be asleep when he got back. I managed to sneak my meds in the bathroom when he wasn’t looking.”

“Wait, you haven’t told him?” Erika’s face suddenly came into frame, “And how are you going to explain it if you can’t sleep?”

“I took my stuff already,” Molly shrugged, “I won’t have any problems.”

The other two girls sighed. Molly would mother all of them, she almost seemed to love taking care of everyone, but the second someone tried to do the same with her, she shut down.

For some reason, she hated being taken care of, or worried about. Her roommates never understood it. 

“One of these days Molly, you’ll have to actually tell him. Especially if you plan on keeping him around like this,” Erika told her. 

“Let me worry about it,” Molly replied quickly, “I can worry about myself.”

“Yeah, we know you can Bliz-Molls- fuck…just talk to him.” 

Molly could practically feel her inner walls getting thicker at the thought of telling Rooster about her past, and how it made her who she is today. She closed her eyes for a moment, wishing she was still in Connecticut. Maybe things would be simpler if she never decided to go back home. 

“I should go, I don’t know when he’s coming back, and everything is starting to kick in.”

It was more than an hour before Rooster slipped back into the hotel room. The small lamp next to his bed was the only light on in the whole room. Molly, true to her word, was fast asleep in her bed. Rooster couldn’t help but notice the way she seemed to curl up to take up the least amount of space possible. She did that in the car too. Now, she was curled up on the very edge of the bed, almost hugging her legs to her chest. Never mind the fact that she had her own bed, and didn’t need to worry about space, it was almost as if she couldn’t help it. 

Rooster let out a deep breath, feeling his shoulders sag a little. He carefully sat down on the edge of his bed, quietly slipping off his shoes. For some reason, he felt like she could wake up at any moment. She hardly slept in the car, even though she claimed she did. Rooster could tell she mainly just had her eyes closed, probably to avoid talking. Which was fine, if she didn’t want to talk he wouldn’t make her, but she didn’t need to fake being asleep to avoid him. 

The only sound in the hotel room was the old air conditioning unit, which made an annoying humming sound when it was on. Rooster was used to sleeping in far worse conditions though, having spent time at various bases overseas.

“You should stop staring at me,” Molly’s voice broke through the near silence. 

“Oh, sorry, I thought you were asleep.”

“Doesn’t make you staring any less creepy,” Her eyes opened to meet his, “You should go to sleep. Since you wouldn’t let me drive.”

“Did I do something that upset you?” He suddenly questioned, “You’re different all of the sudden.”

She rolled over onto her back and looked up at the ceiling. She was different, because her feelings were different. But she didn’t know how she could even begin to explain that to him. She didn’t even understand it herself. Because somehow, she went from feeling cold, to having her heart ache whenever she was near him. 

“It’s nothing,” She said quietly, “Just go to sleep.”

She heard a sigh followed by the sound of him rolling over in the bed next to her. Molly wished she could put everything into words and tell him the whole story. She wanted Rooster to understand her. Hell, she wanted to understand herself. She trusted Rooster, but that didn’t stop her from wondering if he would rethink everything. 

She couldn’t say that she would blame him if he tucked tail and ran. Chances are, she would do the same thing if the roles were reversed. In Molly’s mind, she carried more baggage than a cargo plane. So instead, she rolled over, putting her back to him. She felt the need for distance as she held her breath, praying the tears would somehow go away. Molly would not cry with Rooster in the room. Especially when they still had a few more days worth of driving ahead of them. 

The next day, Rooster refused to let Molly get behind the wheel. Truthfully, he liked driving, if he couldn’t fly because he was with her, at least he could drive. Molly stayed quiet, trying to focus on the book in her hands.

Rooster had one hand on the wheel while the other played with the radio, trying to find an acceptable station. Though, most of what he was able to pick up was just static or morning talk shows. 

Molly took note of the way he seemed annoyed as he kept pushing buttons before groaning and switching the radio off. There was a minute or two of silence. Molly tried to seem like she was reading, but in all reality, her heart threatened to explode from her chest. 

“Okay, the way I see things, we still have a few thousand miles ahead of us, right? We have two choices, either we continue this drive in horrible silence, or you can talk to me and tell me what’s wrong, so you can go back to being my girl.”

Molly scoffed and slammed her book shut, “I’m not your girl, Rooster.”

He almost laughed, “Right, so I flew across the country only to drive back, during the first good amount of leave I’ve had in years, for someone that I don’t care about? Someone who doesn’t care about me? I don’t think the last couple of months have been one sided, Molly.”

She shook her head, refusing to look over at him, “I’m not doing this with you, not now. I can’t.”

“If not now, then when Molly? Huh? Because I know you feel it.”

“Nothing can happen between us, Rooster. You know that.”

“Why? Because you’re a few years younger-”

“More than ten! More than ten years younger, which last time I checked isn’t a few. You were nearly a teenager when I was born, don’t you get that? In comparison, I might as well be a child.”

Rooster spotted a rest stop just ahead and pulled over. He slammed the car in park before turning to face her. For some reason, he felt a bit of rage due to the way she was acting. Yes, she was younger than him, but she was more mature than some of the women that were his age. She understood his life, and somehow understood him. She was young, yes, but wise beyond her years. She was far from a child. 

“You aren’t a child,” He said sternly, “However, you’re acting a bit like one right now.”

“Yeah, well you’re being an ass, so there’s that,” She shot back under her breath. 

Suddenly, his laugh filled the cab of her truck. The kind of laugh that made his whole body shook as he threw his head back. While he laughed, anger bubbled up inside Molly. She wanted to scream. She didn’t know where they were, aside from the side of an interstate somewhere. Yet, here he was laughing just moments after inadvertently trying to turn her whole world on its side. 

“What the hell, Bradshaw!”

“I’m sorry,” He was still laughing, but trying to quiet down, “You just have no idea how much power you hold in this situation, Molly. Normally I’m the one with the cards, in the air or on the ground. I know exactly how things are going to end, but with you…God, with you I’m in a tailspin. The scary part is the fact that I like it.”

“You can’t say things like that, Rooster,” She whispered. 

“Why?”

“I told you,” She replied softly, licking her lips, “I can’t do this. I won’t do this…I won’t do it to you.”

“Do what to me, Molly? Talk to me, please,” His hand reached out for hers. He didn’t miss the way she seemed to almost flinch when his skin came into contact with hers, but grabbed her hand anyway. 

She shook her head, knowing there was no way she could explain everything to Rooster and still have the same relationship with him. Only three people knew about it outside of her family, Beth, Erika, and Jack. They were the only ones she ever told. 

Taking a deep breath, Molly moved as far away from him as she could, “You wouldn’t understand, Rooster.”

A few seconds later, she unbuckled and opened her car door, “I need to get some air.”

Rooster opened his mouth to try to stop her, but the door was already shut behind her. Molly walked several feet away and bent over. Her breath was shaky and forced. She didn’t expect to feel this way about him. She didn’t expect to have butterflies or constantly be blushing around him. She loved being around him, but she started to realize that she loved it too much. 

“Get your shit together,” She whispered to herself, “You still have days to go.”

Rooster watched as she walked in circles in the parking lot. He wanted to go out and comfort her, even if he didn’t know what was going on. He felt the need to just help her. Rooster couldn’t explain or understand how this girl seemed to steal his heart, but he knew that she had it. Even if Molly herself didn’t know, or wasn’t sure if she wanted it, she had him in the palm of her hand.

The second he saw her shaking he sprung out of the car and ran to her. He wrapped her in his arms, holding her as tightly as he could. Her whole body shook as she cried. She clung to him. His heart ached, he didn’t know how to help her or what was going on. 

“It’s okay, I’ve got you Mak.”

At a rest stop in the middle of Illinois, Molly looked up at Rooster and finally saw it. She saw the concern, she saw the way he looked at her. She finally felt the safety he offered her. She relaxed in his arms. In that moment, Molly realized that he wouldn’t hurt her, he would do everything he could to keep her safe and happy. She trusted him. 

In a moment, before she could talk herself out of it, Molly stood on her tiptoes, trying to get as close to him as she could, and she kissed him. She gave him more than she’d given anyone in years. She gave him her heart.

"Things are okay. The kids are good. Esther wants to be a judge now, so that's been an interesting process. Myerson and associates is doing great under Ethan. Kitty's working on opening a youth center for underserved kids and at-risk kids. Activities, afterschool childcare, mental health services. I think it's gonna be amazing. Nora is looking to open up a new Yoga studio, and Noah got a job doing animation for Disney. Ella won a Grammy. Isn't that amazing? I Grammy. She has one to match the ones we have."

Midge smiles before pushing forward. "I'm thinking about selling the brownstone. Moving to Stars Hollow full-time. I even learned how to take care of your flowers. You'd be proud. I've only killed two this year, and I replaced them...and the brownstone is big. It's so big, Lenny, and there are so many stairs, and at least in the house in Connecticut there's only a few stairs. And Luke and Lorelai are still there. Rory, too now. So I'd have people. I could still visit the city...and the brownstone was a house we lived in but it never felt quite like home. Not to me at least. The apartment, of course, was home, and-I mean anywhere with you was home, but without you it just feels..." she shrugs. "Like a place I live sometimes."

She takes a breath and collects herself. "I don't think you'd mind. You always said the brownstone was good as long as I was in it with you. So." She gets to her feet, brushing off the skirt of her dress. "Anyways. I need to get going. Jess is waiting to drive me home. He's good, too, by the way. Still editing. Your memoir was huge. I mean - people really - I mean. Lenny. I always knew you were an amazing writer, but-" she stops herself and shakes her head. "Anyways. I'll come back and visit soon."

Rivendell is appealing for the combination of natural beauty is books and lore abd song and friendly elves. But I can’t sleep in the treetops there; I think I have to choose Lothlórien.

I do think that in the First Age, the Elves could do many things, through what we would call ‘magic’ and they would call just being themselves, that we can do through technology, and do them more beautifully. So it’s hard to think what the modern world has that would improve upon it. The thing about Tolkien’s world is that it’s in a state of technological decline, not technological progress; there are many things from the First Age (and before) and even the Second Age that we would have no idea how to create. And I don’t really want to play Connecticut Yankee in Middle-earth.

On top of that, most modern technology is dependent on modern infrastructure. I almost said I’d give Aragorn antibiotics and vaccines after his coronation to share around Middle-earth, but the challenge is that without reliable, controlled-temperature refrigeration and freezing, what you can do is more limited. Ditto for anything dependent on electricity or global telecommunications systems or regular maintenance. Whereas in Middle-earth you can bury a sufficiently good sword in the ground for centuries to millennia and it’ll still be sharp.

Sincerely I never want to put politics into my social medias. However. I’m tired of just sitting here and pretending not having a political opinion of my own. So please, let me speak while I still have the right to.

- I am pro choice. I am of the opinion that pro choice, in terms of abortion care, is to be your choice whether or not you would have an abortion. If it’s not something that you agree with, or something that is against your religion, that’s your deal, but you cannot tell anyone what to do with their bodies.

- people say they’re pro life but are they really pro life, or pro birth? Do they believe in abolishing the death penalty? What about creating a better mental health system with outlets to directly combat mass shooting? What’s wrong with putting strict regulations on guns and how you obtain them? Are you a vegetarian or vegan? If you support all life, why do we still allow hunting? Why don’t we have a better sexual education? Why is the US health care system so expensive if we should value life?

I can answer all of these questions and more.

1. No they do not believe in abolishing the death penalty because many people see it as justice or bettering the publics safety.

2.&3. Because mental health and guns aren’t the problem with mass shootings. No no. Abortions are some how the issue with this, according to congressman Billy Long. Why restrict guns when we can restrict woman’s bodily autonomy??

4.&5. because veganism/vegetarianism isn’t the life style you want, right? But aren’t animals a form of life? By that argument you shouldn’t eat plants and animals at all. Because you’re killing a living thing, didn’t you know?

6. “We already have a sexual education curriculum put into place.” Do you remember your sexual education program? What did it teach you? Because I don’t remember it teaching me that I have control of my own sexuality. I don’t remember my education telling me that I’m not the only person to blame. That I’m not the only person responsible.

7. Because that’s not how it works. At least not in such a greedy capitalist country that could not care less about its people. But why, if we are supposed to care so much about the life a human that hasn’t been born yet, do we not care about those of us that are already here and are struggling to take care of ourselves? Greed.

I have and always will say; our current pro lifers, in and out of office, only care about a life up until it’s born.

Is this really the time to be encouraging people to keep children they didn’t want in the first place?

Okay. I’ve been thinking on this for the past few days, ever since the news dropped. Honestly, I feel like a lot of people are not looking at this issue the right way. Say whatever you want on whether you think a fetus is a living human being or when life truly begins. It’s a philosophical question that will never have a clear cut answer. However, whether or not a fetus is a living human being is not the issue. It simply doesn’t matter. What this all boils down to is Bodily Autonomy. The human right to decide what happens to your physical body.

People say “Abortion is murder! You are killing babies!”

Think about it like this, is it murder to not donate bone marrow to the two year dying of cancer?

Is it murder to not donate your blood every week to supplement the constant demand and shortages of blood products?

Is it murder every time someone dies waiting on the organ transplant list?

The answer to those questions is no. None of those things are murder. Are they unfortunate and heartbreaking? Yes. However, no one is going to prison or getting fined in any of these circumstances because it is unlawful and immoral to force someone to put their health and life at risk to save another. It’s not murder because you didn’t step in front of the bullet to save someone else. In no other instance is there even a discussion on whether we should force someone to use their body to sustain someone else’s life. We do not even force corpses to do that. If you don’t have written permission as an organ donor then none are taken that could save multiple lives and even improve the lives of many more. It’s not anyone else’s decision what happens to your body, even as a corpse.

And I know people like to minimize what it really means to be pregnant and give birth. It’s sugar coated and romanticized but it is a dangerous endeavor whether you want to believe it or not. People die not only in labor but from pregnancy complications all the time, especially in America where we have the HIGHEST maternity mortality rate of all first world countries. In fact, according to the WHO we are only one of two countries whose maternal mortality rate has INCREASED since 2000 (the other being the Dominican Republic). And that rate goes up the younger/older the mother gets. Women choose to take that risk to bring life into this world. They suffer to bring life into this world. 10 year olds who just got their period and are raped will most likely die if they are forced to try and give birth. Pro Life until outside the womb. Doesn’t that child’s life matter? Doesn’t the 11, 12, 13 year olds life matter? Doesn’t the 42 year old mom with 3 other kids life matter?

But as I said before, that’s not what this is about. None of the anti abortion advocates care about life. They have shown that again and again through the policies they block and support. There is no support for mothers and children outside of the womb.

Let’s all call this what it is, a ploy for control. A ploy for the control of women and anyone with a uterus. A ploy for control of the working class and the poor folks of this country. They are the ones that will pay the most dearly for this. People who have the means to “take a vacation” after “getting in trouble” won’t. There is no other reason for this because it is not about life.

Let’s also not forget that the reasoning used in the Supreme Courts decision stated that Roe v Wade was baseless and it’s foundation faulty. That foundation was the right to privacy. Other cases that have been settled on that same basis will now be under threat, all of which have been threatened recently by republicans in office. These cases include, Lawrence v Texas (right to sexual privacy), Griswald v Connecticut (right to contraception for married couples), Obergefell v Hodges (right to same sex marriage), and even Loving v Virginia (right to interracial marriage). I don’t want to wake up in two years to find my marriage nullified. Does it sound like I’m jumping to the worst case? Like I’m catastrophizing? Well two years ago you would have said the same thing about Roe v Wade.

And say what you will on why this is happening be it the falling birth rates, religious extremism, or just good old fashioned misogyny. Both women and men should be furious. The majority of Americans do not support this. The lie of the “Silent Majority” can only last so long. So VOTE and RAGE. Rage and rage and rage until it cannot be ignored.

June 30th, 2022 day 44 of the AT adventure.

After leaving me on the trail in New Milford, Connecticut, Gretchen went to visit her sister Hanna, who also came to see me in New Milford, and then after several days rejoined me outside of Great Barrington Massachusetts for a couple more nights. We had several days where we could start together hiking, then after a number of miles she would turn around and hike back to the car and then later in the afternoon pick me up when I finished my miles at a distant site. She dropped me off on the trail this morning and headed back to Virginia. It was so much fun our time together.. It was hard to see her go. Been hiking through Southern Massachusetts over the last several days. Hiking has been quite pleasant, beautiful weather and less rocky trails. More good pack dirt and some nice pine needle covering. The ups and downs have seen more moderate as well. Some beautiful scenery and even though this is a very active bear area, I have not seen any here yet. The site I'm at tonight is known for lots of bear activity and there's a bunch of boy scouts here. That'll probably bring in some good bears I bet. I kind of got spoiled with having Gretchen here for a while and her sister Hanna as well visiting. Now I'm back on the trail and it's just me. My tramily has pretty much dispersed, Stacy and Carla both got off the trail on Monday, Evan is too fast and way ahead at this point, and Charlotte is hiking with her dad for a week. She will then hike with her aunt for a week. She says they'll be slower so maybe I'll catch up to them. The post only allows me to attach so many pictures which is why I'm putting some pictures out there in separate blogs. My right knee has given me some problems but not limiting too much yet. I'm hoping the white mountains don't do me in. You all take care and I want to thank all those praying for me both at Christ Lutheran and otherwise. I know the Lord is walking with me and I certainly can use all the help I can get. I know some of my posts seem like I have a flight of ideas, so sorry. Happy trails.

24: Vicissitudes

Fate liked to think they enjoyed a good joke as much as anyone. It wasn't true, but Fate worried more about the future than reflecting about the past anyway.

Thus when Discord came to them with an idea, presented as a joke, they decided to entertain her and see what she had in mind.

"What if, as a joke, you left somebody unmoored? Just...gave them no fate at all? Leave them totally open to the vicissitudes!" Discord asked.

"Who?" Fate responded, puzzled.

"It doesn't matter. It could be anyone. Some random person. We can let Chaos pick somebody." Discord said, excitedly.

"I spend much of my life fighting to correct for your sister's influence, and you wish to give her this choice?" Fate responded with some disdain.

"Okay, look, we'll do it this way. Have her pick somebody, and we'll let it be the next person that she talks to. How does that sound?" Chaos asked, by way of compromise.

Fate nodded slowly. "Fine, but I reserve the right to end this if it gets out of hand."

"Great!" Discord chirped. I'll call her right now.

The resulting call was longer and more stressful than expected, as Chaos kept wandering off the point, and also suspected that Discord was trying to cause trouble. Fate suspected that nobody really got along with Discord, and was beginning to regret this bargain.

Eventually however, the lucky party was selected in the form of Isaac Cantor, who ran a small Jewish deli at the corner of Fifth and Vine Streets in West Haven, Connecticut. He happened, right at that moment to be selling a roast beef sandwich to Chaos' favorite person.

Isaac didn't notice anything strange at the time, and in fact his entire day went on as usual. Until he closed and began counting the till, which came to just under a million dollars.

Since, on a good day, the deli cleared a thousand, Isaac was certain that he must have made a mistake.

Counting again, he again found that he had just under a million in the till, though he was off by thirty-five cents from his first count, and had to do it a third time to make sure it was balanced.

This left him in something of a quandary, since he normally took the proceeds home with him and deposited it at the bank on his way to work the next morning. But today's till was currently filling six shoe boxes and an old flour storage bin, and was less portable than the normal roll of bills.

Instead, Isaac pulled the usual deposit from the total and put it in his pocket. He then put the rest of the money in the broom closet, and locked the door.

Stepping out into the late evening, before he could lock the door he was approached by a local stray cat that he sometimes fed scraps. He didn't much like cats, but God's creatures and all, he stepped back inside to get a few trimmings and tossed them to the cat before locking the door.

The cat wolfed down the meat, and then sat down and gazed at Isaac for a moment.

"Isaac, I know we're not friends or anything," the cat said out loud "but you've been good to me so I'll do you a good turn."

Isaac was sure that somebody was putting him on, but the voice was quite clearly coming from the cat.

"I..." Isaac stammered out.

"We don't normally get involved in human affairs, but you've got some stuff going on and you should probably be careful." the cat said, before pausing to lick his paw.

"Careful about...what?" Isaac responded at last.

"Everything, really. I'd just try to avoid making any big decisions for...well, the rest of your life." the cat responded, making as much of a shrug as his shoulders would allow.

"I see. That could be difficult." Isaac said, still convinced somebody was putting him on.

"Oh, you have no idea. Anyway, take care." the cat said, turning and vanishing into the darkness.

Isaac locked the door and turned to walk home, suddenly very worried about his life.
