You said hit me with your prompts so…
I haven’t seen any fic yet explore Maya contemplating or wanting to carry their second child, now that she’s secure in her motherhood what it means to be a family.
Anon, I have been sitting with this prompt for, frankly, months. Just like… stewing it in my head because it’s so good. So good, in fact that it became part of the Hygge Universe “canon” timeline, where it will live for all eternity.
I had every intention of writing this one for you. I still want to. I still might. Life, however, decided that three of the women closest to me that wanted children would all get pregnant within a few months of each other and well, I’m going to be an aunt for the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th time this spring.
With so many new lives anticipated this year, there are aspects of this story that I can’t write. Not right now. Maybe not ever. But certainly not until my nieces and/or nephews are safely in my arms. I have every faith that you will understand my reasonings.
I outlined this one, though, like much of the Hygge Universe still to come. And I know that one day soon, these stories will no longer be canon compliant and some or all of us will move onto new tales. It pains me to imagine this little bit never getting the light of day at all.
So, thanks to the urging of a couple of great friends, the answer to this prompt is outlined below the cut. I hope a tiny taste is enough.

prompt #11:
(For reference: at this point in season 6, Hygge Universe is still nearly 100% canon compliant.)
It’s 2024. Andrea has just recently turned 1. Maya and Carina have settled into that comfortable space of parenthood where you suddenly look around and go, “Holy shit, we actually know what we’re doing?” It’s a glorious place to find oneself.
That comfort in the routine is what starts the first spark of want in Carina. Or maybe it’s a comment made at Andrea’s first birthday party about what a great big brother he’d be. Either way, the desire begins to fester in her.
She dreams of another baby held in Maya’s arms, someone for Andrea to grow up with, a way for them to nourish the sibling bond that she so cherished with her own brother. Another chance to break the patterns of their own childhoods, knowing that their children will never be placed in competition with each other or separated or made to feel as though they aren’t safe.
It’s an intoxicating image.
Maya, however, isn’t quite as sure about this idea when the topic is broached. Not for the first time, they come to heads about it. Maya is still in therapy, still trying to work through the traumas of her childhood. Motherhood is amazing and wonderful and she’s so grateful for every moment of their family, but her career isn’t yet where she wants it to be. She isn’t where she wants to be. And so, she denies it. Snuffs out the dream, a little.
Tries to convince Carina that they can be happy with exactly what they have.
Carina tries to convince herself, too.
Only, Maya’s career goals begin to flourish shortly after. Something changes that allows her to get back onto the track she’d once been denied. She’s not a captain again – yet – but there’s signs that it’s coming and the future suddenly looks promised, hopeful even, again.
The proverbial cloud lifts and Maya can picture the years ahead. Can imagine their family of three becoming four. It’s like the first time; the flick of a switch and there’s suddenly nothing she wants more than to see Andrea as an older brother, Carina as a mother once more, their family completed.
So, they agree to start trying.
Trying, as a queer couple, means heading to the fertility clinic. Because the first time they did this, it took like 10 attempts of IUI to work and Carina knows that could mean something is wrong. She wants to be sure they’re making the most educated choices (even if she hates the idea of something as beautiful and romantic as creating their child becoming something clinical, ironically).
The doctor wants them to have the best chances. IVF, though expensive, results in a greater likelihood of a successful pregnancy. They could use the same donor sperm as before, have it injected into one of their eggs in the lab, and then implant one or more viable embryos. It’s all very medical and unnerving and not exactly their speed, but Carina agrees that it’s the best course of action.
Maya, however, gets a little stuck on the cost. They’d have spent more than $6000 on sperm to create Andrea. IVF is even more expensive. So, while Carina is toying with the idea of reciprocal IVF using Maya’s eggs or regular IVF with her own eggs, Maya is clipboard spiralling.
She spirals so hard, in fact, that she begins to weigh all of the possible options – including carrying the child herself so they can try IUI again instead. She’s younger and she remembers the heartbreak Carina had felt with each unsuccessful attempt and thinks, maybe, she could protect Carina from all of that if it was her body going through it.
But, she’s back on the career track and getting pregnant could derail that again. Even trying to get pregnant could derail it. She wants their family and she wants Carina to be happy and she wants her job and she can’t seem to make all of these pieces fit together in a way that makes sense. She mulls it over so quietly and so intensely that she makes herself a little crazy.
See, Maya’s in therapy and really, truly doing better, but she’s still kind of a dumb ass when it comes to communication. So, while Carina would notice that something was going on, it wouldn’t be given voice right away and would probably only spill out when Carina’s finally had enough and gone, “Seriously, what the fuck.” (Except she’d say that sentiment way more eloquently.)
Maya will have tried so hard to make herself want to carry their child that she will feel as though she’s failed when she still hasn’t managed to convince herself. That devastation at her own inability is what Carina will find when they finally crack the surface of clipboard Maya.
Ultimately, though, Maya doesn’t care if their children are biologically hers. She doesn’t care if they have any blood relation to herself at all. Because she looks at Andrea and sees only her son. He has the features of the woman she loves, yes, but he’s also just this little human being that they hoped and wished and fought for. (And, realistically, she knows it could be better for both their kids from a medical standpoint if they have more genetics in common.)
Which is what gets Carina responding along the lines of, “You fucking idiot (affectionate).” She tells Maya that it’s okay, even though it was difficult the last time. That she doesn’t need protecting. That, actually, Maya being the one to not get pregnant successfully when they try wouldn’t make it hurt less.
She would also point out that Maya wouldn’t be able to guarantee no miscarriages or negative pregnancy tests just by the sheer will of it being her own body. There’s no control, really, in instances of trying to procreate. No matter the methods involved.
(This is where my own brain gets stuck because Carina wants to carry their children and trying to communicate that desire in a way that is authentic is challenging. And while I am writing this fic universe for representation’s sake and showcasing queer families that are simply soft and lovely and safe… this whole wanting kids thing is not actually on my own radar. Hence some of the stewing that has occurred. I really, really love being an aunt instead.)
Anyways, they proceed with IVF. They utilize the same donor as they did with Andrea – someone who looks a bit like Maya, though I haven’t really said that anywhere in Hygge thus far. They opt to use Carina’s egg again, which means the whole messy process of hormones and egg retrieval and the shit that both sucks and is a privilege all at once.
And the first implantation takes.
They settle into that cozy, quiet reality of discovering something you’ve dreamed of is coming true. Where no one knows but the two of them. They whisper about it between the covers, hands gravitating to Carina’s abdomen though nothing noticeable is there yet. They share giggly kisses. They bask in the wonder of the life ahead.
Until Carina miscarries.
This… this is the part I cannot write, anon. But it needs to be there.
Because this grief? It is quiet and it is loud. It is secret and all-consuming. It is a grief we are expected to tuck away into corners and overcome in silence. But it is a grief that more parents face than we speak about. It is the harshest reality of creating children. And it is the reality most of us will face at some point, whether we are dreaming of children of our own or loving someone who is.
Maya, in the devastation, will attempt to shoulder the loss. Only, she can’t. She can’t take the pain of it away. She can’t fix it and she can’t control it. This, I think, would be the first time in their motherhood that Maya would have to just… completely let go and have faith.
She’s been close once or twice by this point… when she rushed home after a difficult call to hug Carina in the early days of their pregnancy with Andrea. Those first six weeks of his life, when she’d taken the time off work and attempted to be still with them. Even the decision to try for a second child amidst the fear has been another step towards her growth. But this… the aftermath of grief over their loss is a really big turning point. How could it not be?
Maybe that’s what makes the next implantation feel so different. Maybe that’s why they’re tentative and calm when it takes, when the pregnancy test is positive. When the promise of a future starts to appear before them again.
This little embryo becomes Beatrice. They whisper about her beneath the covers, hands gravitating to Carina’s abdomen as she grows within. They share giggly kisses and quiet tears. Bea moves, more than Andrea ever did, and Carina calls her, “your daughter” so many times that Maya can’t imagine her being anything but.
And yeah, she couldn’t make herself want to carry her inside her body physically. But she carries in her heart and in her arms for the rest of her life. Just as she does with their son.
You see, Maya is already a mother – biology be damned.
And all of that is why, on the day of Beatrice’s birth, Maya thanks Carina for doing this again.

I woke up because I felt the need to and stood up from my bed, I saw Saeyon eonnie asleep. I opened the curtain and saw that it is dark, still. The time was 4:30 AM when I checked my phone, it seems like I need to wake up the others after an hour. I took my book - The Timekeeper and went out to go to the nearest coffee shop which was Starbucks. In my comfortable clothes: sweatpants and sweater, I dismissed the though of taking a bath since it will be cold if I did so. I went to the cashier to have my order.
“Espresso, hot, grande. Please.” I ordered to the cashier. The boy took my order and written it on the cup, he didn’t ask for my name since I was the only one present at the moment. I took my favorite spot, the one hidden from the people. And I continued reading while I wait for my order. My espresso came and I gradually finished it as I read. I heard my phone vibrate on the table, and saw that it did so because of my alarm. It was 10 minutes to 5:20 AM and I unwillingly pushed myself up to go back to our dorm.
I woke the members up while they are all not very eager with the thought of waking up, Yeseul eonnie immediately woke up reminding everyone about the rehearsals and filming we’ll be having for Show! Music Core, KBS’s Music Bank, and a meeting with our manager tonight. And with that they all woke up to start the day. I took a bath first while Juyu was fighting her might to not fall asleep on her part of the on our double decker, which was the one at the bottom. Our manager came at our dorm at around 7:05 AM, fetching us.
“I want you guys to perfect the filming for the music shows and finish it as soon as you can. We need to adjust our time and have more time on the evening,” he said.
“Why? What’s happening?” Saeyon eonnie asked.
“It’s for you to find out later,” the manager said, throwing us a cheeky smile.
“Waeeee?” Haeun eonnie whined loudly. But, our manager simply shook his head and ushered us to leave our dorm with him.
We all went out and our manager came back in front of our door to check if we really did locked it, after which we proceeded to leave our apartment building.
Our outfit for the Music Bank is different from the one’s we wore yesterday, I am now wearing a pale pink oversized bomber jacket with a salmon pink top, my white tennis skirt, and a white knee socks with my Adidas shoes. I have my black hair tied to low pig tails with it curled. I went to Haeun eonnie who was currently getting herself done with her hair and make up.
“Don’t you think they’re going to be releasing the Sweet Tooth MV?” I asked Haeun eonnie. She looked at me and frowned.
“I thought so too, but I kind of feel like it’s different.”
“Really?” I asked. “What are you thinking then?”
She simply shrugged, and went back to her phone. “We’ll be practicing tonight and the upcoming weeks, if that’s the case.”
I smiled at that. “Omo!”
Eonnie looked at me. “Of course, you’d be happy about that.” I winked at her and she made a face at me. “Ew, get away from me.” Haeun eonnie said to me, while slapping my arm.
“Hey! Ouch!” I complained looking at her but she simply winked at me too, I made a face at her too and left; I heard her loud “Yah!” before leaving.
The members and I stood at the side of the stage wherein the staffs were placing our microphone — lapel, on us, I started to see our fans enter the venue with pink banners; Hygge written on it. I smiled at the thought that I was once like them too. The fans noticed us at the side, and they cheered when they did. We went on stage, and although we were wearing microphones on us, we were given a microphone — which is held.
“Treasure the moment. Annyeonghaseyo, Hygge-imnida!” We said our greeting and bowing as we did so. The fans clapped and cheered as we did so. Upon doing so, staffs came to get the microphones from us.
We went to our places for the first verse of Bloom, our debut song. The music started, and was in sync with the production showed on the LED screen surrounding us. There were pastel flowers that served as decorations on the stage, which were life sized. I hoped that I would not be hitting those things later on.
“Go Haeun, Min Yeseul, Kim Saeyon, Park Ara, Ahn Juyu, Kim Yeona, five, six, seven, Hygge!” Our fans chanted as the intro in our song started to play.
“Did you know that your eyes shines brighter than the stars at night?” Yeseul eonnie started, going up front while doing her choreography just as she practiced last night, and looking at the camera right in front of her.
Yeseul eonnie sat down with the rest of us except Yeona. “Did you know that your smile is one in a million?” The maknae sang, winking at the camera before smiling at it widely.
We all paused in dancing as Saeyon eonnie’s part came as she looks at the camera at the side of the stage. “Yes, everything I say is true.”
I walked up front with my hands clasped together, holding it near my chest. “No, it isn’t out of the blue.” I sang before returning to my place from before.
We all danced in synced, raising our right hand diagonally, and continuing on with our choreography. “I have been actually thinking about you for a while.” Yeona sang, dragging the notes further and moving to our respective positions. The chorus started, and the production present on the LED screens had red hearts beating on it.
“My heart goes bloom,” Yeseul eonnie sang, and just in time the hearts beating on the screens bursts and out came flowers in pastel colors. “And boy, it’s because of you.”
I slid my way to the front and danced my part. “Maybe it is weird, maybe it is crazy.” I looked at the camera and pointed at it as I began to sing the next part. “But it’s you, you, you. You make my heart bloom.” I sang, before blowing a kiss to the camera with my two hands.
We were continuing great with our song, however in the succeeding trials of performance there had been a problem with the music and production. Hence, causing us to re-do the whole performance. We finished after our fourth trial. We went back on stage with the microphone on our hands as we thanked our fans and supporters for coming. We bid them good bye and proceeded to our dressing room.
NCT Dream sunbaenim were to pass us, due to the fact that they’d be the next in shooting their stage. The members and I started to walk slowly and bowed at them as they came through us. “Annyeonghaseyo.”
They bowed too before greeting us. “Annyeonghaseyo,” they gave us a smile and proceeded to go to their destination.
“They’re your age Yeona,” I mentioned to our maknae as we walked through the hallway. “Do you have your bias in NCT Dream?”
She gave a weird look before shaking her head. “None.”
Unfortunately for Yeona, Haeun eonnie heard our conversation. “Aye, you can tell us. We won’t tell,” eonnie urged Yeona to confess as we finally arrived in our dressing room. Yeona chose to be wise and simply kept quiet; causing the loud eonnie to leave her alone. The staffs had everything prepared when we came back to our room, they told us that we’d be wearing the same clothes for the Music Bank except for our hair. We all hopped to our respective vans, and thus another ride to another place began.
“Honestly that meeting has been on the back of my mind the whole day.” Juyu started, Saeyon eonnie clapped her hands once.
“I thought no one was going to talk about this, seriously.” Eonnie said, after snapping her fingers.
I raised my hand up. “I stand up by the fact that they’ll be releasing the Sweet Tooth MV.” Juyu turned to me, before racing her right hand asking for a high five.
“Same, same.”
Haeun eonnie frowned. “Honestly that would be nice, but we need to double our time during night practices because there would be two choreographies. And we need to diet again because I know we’ve gotten fat because of all those cheat days.”
“Agreed. It’s a probability, though — the diet thing,” our leader replied. “We had our physical examination last last week.”
“No~” Juyu and Yeona moaned in agony. I frowned at the thought too, and planned to sleep as soon as I heard that theory.
“And no sleeping Ara,” Yeseul eonnie hinted, as she saw me shifting through my seat. “It’s unfair, you know.” I stayed silent because I felt that she was starting to scold me. I stayed quiet the whole ride instead.
We arrived in KBS for the Music Bank earlier than I expected, the place wasn’t so busy with staff and idols which made me conclude that we were the first one to arrive. “You’ll be performing your debut stage,” a staff from the Music Bank approached us with our manager. “It’ll just be pure filming, no audiences and the like.”
My mouth formed an “o” shape, before nodding my head. We all proceeded to get ourselves fixed with the retouch of make up and changing our hair-do again. I sat at the seat the hair stylist told me to sit onto while she removed the ponytail from my hair, and curling it again. I wore my earphones and launched Spotify in my phone, listening to Ed Sheeran’s new album Divide, singing along also.
Everyone was ready and we shoot our stage with 5 trials, with minor errors, when we finally finished our schedule for the day. We said our thanks to the staffs who worked hard and bowed to them. It was in mid afternoon when we went back to our respective dressing room, we were given the liberty to rest, which I was very thankful for. I dimmed the lights down since the lights were down to 100% within the room, making you feel like you just entered heaven.
I yawned. “Good night, little butts. Please wake me up when it’s time to leave!” I heard grunts of agreement while they took their desired spot to sleep to. I quickly occupied the love seat couch, where my lower leg dangled through the other side of the couch. It was silent for a few minutes until we heard a sound.
Prrrrrt.
My eyes immediately opened at the familiar sound, and sat up. “Yah!” Juyu proclaimed, the others woke up as well sitting up as well.
Yeona stood up and apologized running out of the room. “Sorry, I really need to get this out.” Even with the small cubicle provided within this dressing room, our maknae always prefers to have it out where there is no one around. It was honestly a good idea to do so, the thought of smelling the unwanted would be too much.
The other members and I went back to sleep, but the stench of Yeona’s fart made it unbearable so we all simply sat back up and frowned.
“Gahd. What did she eat?” Haeun eonnie complained.
I stood up. “Speaking of eating, I’m hungry. I’m going to go get food.” I said as I walk towards the door.
“You can ask a staff to go get some,” our leader suggested. We had this already growing fanbase within the country, it seems applicable and acceptable to follow her decision but I am in for a short walk outside at the moment.
“It’s okay, I just wanted to have a short stroll outside.” I replied.
“You should at least change your clothes, and bring a face mask with you.” Yeseul eonnie suggested.
I sighed, not really feeling doing so, but I knew she was right. I switched back to wearing a denim washed skinny jeans that didn’t reached my ankle in length, my pink slightly distressed sweatshirt. I wore my black converse and wore my face mask. “I think I’m good now.”
“Wait,” Saeyon eonnie stood up while pulling the two ponytails on top of my head. I shook my hair with my hands and pushed my hair, letting it hang on my right ear.
I smiled lightly even though eonnie couldn’t see it. “Thanks, call me if anything’s happening.” I left with that.
I went to the fire exit where there isn’t much presence of diverse fans waiting for idols inside the building. I saw a guard at the door and told him that I’ll be buying drinks and food at the nearby coffee shop, he nodded and told me to come back safely.
I stepped out of the building and saw the bright sky that is now turning orange. I stretched finally feeling somehow free. I started my stroll and onwards to that nearby coffee shop which was honestly only a block away. The place was packed, and there was no empty table.
It’s not like it mattered though, I wasn’t staying for long. The line for the cashier was surprisingly empty so I simply walked to it and ordered an iced caramel macchiato for myself and a cheesecake for take out. I waited at the other counter for my order when I received a text message from Haeun eonnie ordering me to buy a caramel frappe, a raspberry iced tea, and an iced green tea.
Look at that Hygge buying iced drinks even when it’s cold.
I sighed and went back to get their orders, so I had to line up again. There was someone who ordered a numerous amount of drinks for take out, that I honestly doubt she can handle all to herself. I shoot her a worried look when I finished ordering again and waited with her at the other counter. I noticed the I.D. she was wearing and saw that she was a staff, either from a group or the KBS, I wasn’t sure.
“Uh, hello.” I started, greeting her.
She looked at me and bowed. “Um, hello.” It was awkward to say the least, should have I even started this.
“I noticed that you bought a lot of drinks, and that you’re from KBS… Would you like me to help carrying the drinks? I’m heading back at the building as well.”
She looked at me shocked, and became wary of me. I felt her hesitation. She probably thought I was a random person wanting to get inside KBS.
I sighed before pulling my mask down. “I’m actually from Hygge, the group that just recently debuted.” I smiled while bowing slightly.
“Omo, I’m sorry Ara.” She bowed, apologetically.
I raised and shook my hands in front of me. “Hey, no big deal.”
She smiled, and shyly took up my offer to help her. We went back to the building, our hands holding paper bags filled with caffeine and a dessert as well.
I was nearing my dressing room before a co-staff, helped me with carrying the paper bags which I shook my head to; telling them that it was fine. The said staff simply insisted on carrying the paper bag that I didn’t own, and that he’ll be delivering it to the respective idol who ordered it. I agreed to that, and saw the two staff walking forward making a left turn before disappearing.
I opened the door and saw that they turned the lights back to a 100%, to which I mentally frowned at, I noticed everyone wearing their comfortable clothes already and had already washed their faces. I placed the paper bag on the table near the large mirror, before taking our orders out of the bag. We continued chatting while sharing our drinks with one another before we were told to get ready to leave. I took that as my sign to wash my face off of the make up I’ve been wearing, by the time I get back everyone has hovering over my cheesecake.
“That’s mine!” I whined while I walk to it, slapping Saeyon eonnie’s butt. They all started to move away and I noticed that they eat more than half of my cheesecake. These people really. By the time we were about to leave, and I finished my cheesecake, a staff came with Yeona on her trail.
Haeun eonnie clapped at Yeona. “It was a success!” She exclaimed pertaining to Yeona’s recent you know — defecation.
Yeona frowned at eonnie and slapped Haeun eonnie’s arm. We all laughed at this, and proceeded to leave through the back door because our van was nearer at this specific door.
We’re finally going home. We all slept through the ride, since everyone was aware that we had no schedule set for the rest of the night.
We were woken up by Jinsoo oppa, informing us that we reached our home. “We’ll give you time to rest, around 2 hours before we fetch you for the meeting. I suggest you guys bring practice clothes with you later.”
We nodded at what he said and proceeded to take our comfortable places in our dorm to sleep, I went back to my room with Saeyon eonnie. She didn’t bother changing her clothes before she came plopped herself on top of her bed. I slipped off of my jeans and sweater, neatly placing them at the end of my bed, and getting fresh clothes out of my closet that was meant for sleeping.
I was awoken by a loud clanking of metals. I saw that my roommate also woke up with a sour look. “What’s that noise?” I woke up, asking no one in particular. I heard Jinsoo poppa’s voice from the living room. “Right, that meeting.” I said to myself. As I start to change back to my clothes from before, as I pack my training clothes Saeyon eonnie went out of our room — notifying everyone that we were awake.
“Ara! Pack me some practice clothes too and a towel please!”
“Okay!” I called back.
I went out after changing my clothes, bringing her own bag to the living room, and saw that everyone have assembled at our living room. “Are we ready to go?” I asked.
Jinsoo oppa looked up from his phone and stood up. “Yup, let’s go.”
I heard a few groans and before we knew it we were walking down the tight flight of stairs of our dorm. The same van as before was waiting outside since it was our ride.
We arrived at the building after a few minutes since it was near our dorm. The members and I flocked at the 3rd floor where the “meeting” was going to be held.
“To those who thinks it’s about the new music video, raise your hand!” Juyu exclaimed talking in a fast pace. To which Saeyon eonnie and I raised my hand to.
“Whoa, slow down.” Haeun eonnie said to Juyu as she gestured her hand up and down. “Raise your hand if it’s about a new dorm!!” Eonnie immediately said as well, copying Juyu’s tone. I raised my eyes at this, because I wanted a new dorm since our place was indeed getting crowded with clothes, shoes, and with our maknae’s collection of manga — which I share a few books to this collection as well.
Everyone raised their hand to this except for Juyu. “Ya! Traitors!” She proclaimed, throwing a glare to my way and Saeyon eonnie’s.
“Pst.” Yeseul eonnie looked at Juyu as she made this sound. “You’re being loud,” there was a moment of silence when our leader said this.
I broke the silence. “In my defense, a new dorm sounds nice.” I said to Juyu, raising both of my hands.
The time I dropped my hands, our manager and Bang PD-nim arrived in the room. We instinctively stood up, bowing to PD-nim, he kind of throws this scary aura around him, or maybe it’s just me. Judging with the reflexes the members have though, I think we all think equally the same.
Our CEO took his seat at the head of the table. “Okay, let’s not make this long because you’ll have a long night I bet.”
I looked at Haeun eonnie after hearing this, looking at her with an I said so face. She replied with frowning at me and gesturing that she’s tearing up. I responded with a chuckle because she looked funny.
“Okay first; we’ll be releasing your Sweet Tooth MV tomorrow, midnight.” He started.
Juyu clapped her hands, causing us to look at her weirdly, and she looked at me as if asking what the heck am I doing. Her facial expression caused me to slowly clap my hands with her, thus equating to the whole team clapping. After the weird phenomenon I nudged her elbow with mine since she was sitting at my right, she responded by throwing me a look.
“Juyu seems excited,” he mentioned causing the Juyu to snap her neck to PD-nim, and nodding her head enthusiastically. “I’ll be expecting practices tonight and the weekends then, you know that weekends are usually practice time right?”
“Ne!”
“Next,” he paused while looking at us. I see Yeseul eonnie shift in her seat, is this something negative? I can’t help but think that. “Your fan meeting!”
We sat shocked and after a few seconds Saeyon eonnie stood up while clapping her hands. We all smiled at this and followed her clapping as well.
“Omo, I can’t wait!” Haeun eonnie said, excitedly.
“Can I help with the planning for the event?” Our leader asked, while raising her hand.
“Oh sure, that would be greatly appreciated.” Bang PD-nim commended Yeseul eonnie. That’s our leader right there.
“That’s our leader,” Haeun eonnie said, throwing an arm around Yeseul eonnie.
“A representative will approach you later to let you help with the planning, and the other things.” PD-nim said to Yeseul eonnie, after hearing this she made a nod.
“The last thing, so I can finally send you off.” He started, he looked at each one of us. “You’ll get your new dorm tomorrow,”
Everyone made a loud woah sound, while Haeun eonnie eagerly clapped her hands making this crying face — which honestly looked funny as hell. “I told you, I told you.” She proceeded to point out at us. Bang PD-nim laughed at us.
“Consider this my gift for your debut, you’re doing great ladies!” He said. Looking at him now, he didn’t looked that mean, but was rather cute in a sense that I wanted to hug him cute.
“Kamsahamnida!” Everyone thanked him, while he acknowledged it proceeding to stand up.
“I’m leaving everyone to practice now, take care and don’t forget to eat.” The door closed after what he said.
We all stood up and jumped raving with the fact that we’ll get a new dorm. “This is the best day ever!” Juyu exclaimed, while tackling me to a head lock.
Yeseul eonnie laughed before urging us to proceed to the 5th floor to practice, we tried to fit ourselves to the cramped elevator even though the ride was only a floor away. The excitement we felt from the good news gave us all a good vibe which was good for practice.
I manned the practice since I was assigned to it, but not before having our usual 30 minutes warm up — that started from head-to-toe to the whole body. After doing 5 rounds with our Sweet Tooth song, our leader was excused which I assumed was for the meeting.
“We’re actually doing good with the choreography,” I started. “I think we can proceed with singing while dancing now.”
“Ohhh.” Juyu reacted.
“That’s good,” Saeyon eonnie responded.
Yeona sat on the floor while stretching her arms out. “Finally, I’m itching to sing.”
Everyoned murmured quietly. “Same.”
We finished our practice at around 2AM not seeing our leader since she was excused. I saw Haeun eonnie calling our manager informing him that we were done with practice.
“Okay, fix up everyone. We’re finally going home!” Haeun eonnie announced.
“Aww, that wouldn’t be our home soon.” Yeona said, pouting.
“Later, actually.” I said but what I said was set aside with what Haeun eonnie said.
“Oh so you’d rather stay there?” She jokingly said to our maknae. Yeona responded by sticking her tongue out our eonnie.
I jumped when the door to our practice room opened only to have Jinsoo oppa sticking his head at the door. “Let’s go!”
“You scared me!” I exclaimed, holding my beating heart.
The members and our manager simply laughed at me, and before I know it we were all outside the building having those usual small talks that I now seem to find comforting.

Hello readers! This is jungkooknope back with another note. First I want to say thank you for continuing to read this story, I promise to bring the boys out in this story soon. And thank you to my cousin who’s been giving me ideas to include in this story, you know who you are. Anyway, you might not care but I’m having my Army bomb delivered to me by the end of the month!! I’m just really excited since I paid for it today ((the time where I made this note anyway.)) THE THING IS: I’ll be having it before the WINGS tour in my country. The excitement is unreal I might finish Chapter 3 sooner than I expected it to be because of my excitement.

Maintaining mental health in the modern world
In any year one in four of us experience a mental health problem, but most of us don’t even get treated.
What makes you feel anxious or low?
People? Failure? Places? Why do you think so many of us are suffering from anxiety and depression?
Tumblr media
We made up this idealisation of how perfect life should be, and that’s not life at all, and we shouldn’t live with those high expectations because we will never be able to fulfil them, and consequently that will make us feel miserable. And yes, it happens to everybody, and there is really no need to be ashamed.
So, what happens to our brains and bodies when we have anxiety?
In nature stress helps you (and any other animal) to get safe from danger and once you are safe the stress goes away. But that doesn’t happen in our world, in our human lives stress is constant. It’s like if we were addicted to look for problems to solve. It’s important to realise it’s really never about our problems, because there will always be something going on, and it doesn’t matter how many problems you solve, the stress and anxiety won’t go away as you solve them.
This is, in part, because of (too much) all the stimulation we receive in our modern world.
Tumblr media
What is stress?
Stress makes you feel that you loose balance, that something is happening and it is either important or dangerous (unfortunately, our brain can not distinguish between theres two).
How can you cope with stress in the modern world?
You need to protect yourself. A good advice is to treat your social media like you would treat your own home:
You wouldn’t let anyone in that you wouldn’t trust.
You wouldn’t be subscribed to 57 magazines.
You wouldn’t paste on your windows private pictures for anyone to see from outside.
But there’s more ways that social media can make you feel down. For example, every time you feel down because a picture you published didn’t get “enough” likes. You are putting your worth outside, and making it even worse. Your value definitely does not depend on how many likes or how many contacts you get on Facebook. But also, because information gives us the feeling of “control”, we want to read and check everything that is going on on our social media. But do you really care about all the things during the hours you spend using social media per day? Protect yourself, say no to useless drama!
Coping with difficult head-spaces:
STOP. Breathe.
Tumblr media
Start meditating (a very good app for that if you have never done it before is Headspace) and practice yoga.
Avoid caffeine.
Cut down on social media.
Write your thoughts down.
Aromatherapy: to use candles, incense and diffusers has proven to help hugely as they are a way of practicing mindfulness.
Positive thinking: try to look for the bright side. There is always one.
Acceptance: there is and there will always be things out of our control. But we are in control of ourselves, and we can decide how to be affected by them.
Healthy eating: actually eating badly or the same everyday is really bad for our bodies and our minds consequently. Eating healthy will not only be good for you, it will also help improving your mood.
Lagom and Hygge: this is a lifestyle that is very common in Sweden where people spend a lot of time at home because of very low temperatures: they make their homes very comfy and nice, and they live in the present moment with their families and friends, and the comfort of candles, blankets and fires (and do not need to tweet about it or post a picture on instagram).
Tumblr media
Depression:
There is a part of our brains that manages memories and emotions. The bigger the depression is the smaller this part of the brain becomes.
Usually when we are depressed we first blame any external elements (your partner, your dog, your job, a bad day), and after we blame ourselves.  If you are familiarised with these, you have to know that it is very important for you to accept how you feel:
It is ok not to be ok. Nothing is permanent.
If you are feeling very depressed or anxious seek help. If you do not know where to go or who to talk to, go to your GP and tell them how you feel. Remember, emotions are normal, because you are a human being, and we should not try to avoid them.
Time for a couple of exercises:
Take a piece of paper and write down three things that you are grateful for. It may be difficult at the beginning, do not worry if you can only come up with one. Try this exercise again tomorrow.
Practice mindfulness: this can help you incredibly if you practice it every day (even if it is just for 5 minutes). Mindfulness is about being in the present, emptying your mind and focusing on your breathe. You may not be able to do it the first time entirely, but the more you practice the easier it’ll get.
Tumblr media
We really hope this post has helped you, and don’t forget to check out future events happening at UAL in our Mental Health Wellbeing Project. And a final advice:
First fall in love with taking care of yourself.

A winter wonderland labyrinth
The cold was still biting, but Jessica was having fun. Megan’s happiness was infectious as they approached the small snowy maze, that stood packed high. As they stepped in, Megan quickly began examining the walls, to Jessica’s bewilderment.
“So, are you looking for snow fossils? Or do you have an interest in winter architecture?” Megan distractedly turned back from the wall she was busy examining.
“Huh? Oh, no, I just. Look here, come closer and you’ll see it too.” She held out her hand, almost non-chalantly, and Jessica took it, allowing herself to be pulled into Megan’s personal space as she bent, looking at the wall. “Do you see? The pattern? Small stryations in the snow, that flow into one another, repeating themselves?” Jessica looked, and slowly, but surely, she began to pick out the patterns in the snow. It flowed, and danced, lines coming together to form threads that flowed into rivers, all leading deeper into the maze.
She looked at Megan, who was looking back, expectantly “Okay, I see them. But so what?”
“I found the same pattern at home. I was building a snowman and I noticed that these patterns were on it as well!” Megan was speaking quickly, clearly excited that Jessica could see the patterns
“So… You brought me here to see if I could see snow patterns?”
“No! I brought you here because I wanted to spend time with you. I just also wanted a chance to see more snow in a condensed form. Two birds one stone, you know?”
“I guess. Still, you could have said yesterday.”
“What, and look crazy for seeing patterns in snow? No, better to show you first, then explain. And whilst we’re here, let’s actually do the maze! It’ll be fun!”
Still holding Jessica’s hand, she headed deeper into the labyrinth of snow.
*                             *                             *                             *                             *
Twenty minutes later, they were nearing the centre of the maze, Jessica was sure of it. Now that she could see them, the patterns were getting more complex as they got closer. And she was starting to hear something, something playing on the speakers outside the maze. It was that tune that Megan had been whistling. The tune that had been stuck in Jessica’s head for weeks. But this time it was instruments, and vocals. A foreign language that permeated the air, and was very catchy, even if she didn’t know the words.
This was a chance to know what it was, she quickly stopped Megan, who was about to walk into a family as they rounded a corner. “What is this song? You were whistling it when we met in the park!”
“Oh, it’s some Danish folk song, called ‘Hygge’. This group just released it like, two, three weeks ago? Why?”
“It’s been stuck in my head ever since!”
Megan laughed, nervously, not meeting Jessica’s eyes. “Oh, sorry. Yeah, I guess it is kinda catchy. Come on, we’re nearly there.”
And they pushed on, the temperature was somehow colder here than outside, and Jessica huddled close to Megan as they rounded one final corner and found the centre. The patterns coalesced here, into gorgeous geometric shapes, they almost seemed to shift and move as Jessica watched. The song was nearly loud enough to drown out the sound of their footsteps, but Jessica could hear every word Megan said as she talked quickly about the patterns, still walking towards the centre. Jessica was so content to listen to Megan speak, it was captivating in it’s own way, her enthusiasm just pulled Jessica in, so it was a shock when she realised that Megan was facing her, and close.
“So… I had an ulterior motive bringing you here. And, don’t be mad.” Jessica could see Megan’s eyes moving quickly over her own face, almost like she was studying her. Jessica gave what she hoped was a reassuring smile.
“Go on, I won’t be mad. Unless you’ve decided to kill me and figured here would be a good place to do it? In which case, yes. I will be mad.” Megan blinked, then laughed.
“Oh, yeah, damn. You got me! Curses. Well. Be mad then!” She chuckled again, and smiled back at Jessica. “No. Erm. I like you. And I haven’t been able to stop thinking about you since the fireworks show. And I want to go on a date with you, but I couldn’t think how to ask you? So… Erm… Yeah?”
Jessica laughed. She threw her head back and laughed. The song was loud enough that it was hard to focus, but she still realised something a little absurd. “You want to ask me on a date? But what’s this? Us, in a snow maze? Surely this could be considered a date? Not saying that I don’t want a second one, but I think that you’ve already asked me on a date.”
Megan looked a bit stunned. “Wait, you want to go on a date? I mean, another date? I guess you’re right, this is a date, technically. Wait, do you really like me? I mean, as more than friends? I mean, like, I’m into you. I like like you. You know.”
“You’re attracted to me? You fancy me? Any other synonyms that you’ve got?” Megan opened her mouth to respond, then seemed to realise that the question was rhetorical. The song was filling Jessica’s head, making it hard to find the thoughts, but she knew the words to say. “Because I like you too, Megan. I’ve been attracted to you since I bumped into you that night, and I’ve not stopped thinking about you. When I was home for Christmas, I wished I could have spent those days stuck with you. So, when you say you like me, the feeling is very definitely mutual.”
Megan smiled, and leaned close, and, just for a second, their lips met, a quick kiss, a kiss that promised so much. The rest of their first date was full of small moments, and as the song stopped playing, Jessica realised that this may be what she’d consider a life event. Whether Megan, or, should she shorten it? Does Megan like to be called Meg? Well. Whether she realised it too, Jessica didn’t know. But she was happy, all the same.

Putting the Laundry Room Back Together!
Remember how I’m crazy and putting in my second laundry room in this house in the space of 5 years? Fun times with fickleness.
Step #1 was demolishing the chimney. We’ve discussed this. It was painful but worth it: otherwise my options were to have the machines side-by-side next to the chimney with no sink (where my floating desk was) or stack the machines and have a sink but no other work surface really, or demolish the chimney and have side-by-side machines and a sink. The last option won out, but left a big hole in the floor, the ceiling, and about a foot and a half of missing wall from floor to ceiling! Cute.
Step #2 was getting the electrical in place. Evidently I did not take pictures of this, but that doesn’t mean it just happened by magic! The room had two existing outlets, but a washing machine requires a dedicated 20-amp circuit and a dryer requires a dedicated 30-amp circuit, so both had to be brought up to the room. Luckily, this was very uncomplicated: my old laundry room was further away from my electrical panel than the new one, so it was just a matter of turning off the power to those circuits, pulling the wires back through part of the basement and up the new chase (where the chimney used to live!) and into that back wall. This kind of stuff is actually super simple to do yourself with the slightest amount of know-how, but of course if you have any concerns at all or even dead wires make you queasy, hire a qualified electrician. Duhzville.
Once that was done and my electrical boxes installed, it was on to Step #3: drywall!
Typically I would have tried to patch the missing section of plaster left by the chimney demolition, but in this case I had the depth on my baseboard to add another 5/8″ thickness to the wall, so I opted instead to just drywall over the whole wall. The biggest reason for this is noise: luckily my machines are pretty tame, but I’m still moving big laundry machines to the second floor, basically in the middle of the house, and on a wall that backs to my bedroom, so some additional sound-proofing seemed to be in order!
I wrote several months ago about the line of Purple XP drywalls, and National Gypsum was kind enough to supply the drywall for this project so I could test it out. This is the SoundBreak XP, which is essentially two high-density gypsum boards with a goop in between that blocks sound transmission that would otherwise occur through the wall. It’s also mold and mildew resistant, which is nice now that this room has plumbing! My thought was that leaving the remaining plaster behind it should provide additional sound insulation too, but otherwise you’d probably want to insulate the wall if things are all opened up.
Working with SoundBreak differs from more standard drywalls in a number of ways. First—both sides of the board look the same, but only one side (clearly marked) is supposed to face out. Second, SoundBreak should be installed vertically—not horizontally! Huh! I think it may be to keep seams contained only to where they’re backed completely by framing members. Third, SoundBreak—due to that layer of goop—cannot be scored and snapped like regular drywall can: you have to cut it with a saw! As you might imagine, this is very dusty and ideally should be done outdoors with a good respirator. A circular saw is best for straight cuts, but we were working in tight quarters and used my handy little oscillating saw to get the job done. Fourth, it is HEAVY. I can lift a sheet of 1/2″ lightweight drywall without too much effort, but I cannot lift a SoundBreak board—so be warned that hanging is likely a two person job unless you have Hulk-like strength.
And, since you asked: YES covering up that fabulous Hygge & West wallpaper was a sad moment. Don’t take it personally, wallpaper, I still love you so much! That being said, I still have an entire roll of it (first floor powder room, anyone??), and it’s still in production, and…ya know, there are worse sacrifices. There’s something I sort of like about hiding it behind the drywall, though, like a little time capsule! It’s gonna be OK.
Here you can see the part of the baseboard I had to patch. It’s behind the dryer so I’m not SUPER concerned about it being perfect, but…ya know, I want it perfect. In part because I do not trust myself and now that there’s no chimney in here, this room can actually fit a twin bed…QUIET DOWN, VOICES IN MY HEAD.
Also, that piece of plywood is covering the big hole in the floor where the chimney used to be! Without it, you could stand in the attic and look all the way down to the basement floor, which is just an odd new experience to have in your own house.
ANYWAY. Once the drywall was up, I patched the missing piece in the ceiling and then enlisted Edwin and his mudding and taping skills to get the walls and ceiling ready for paint. The finishing work here isn’t anything crazy, but he can do it so quickly and well that it usually feels worth it to save myself the headache. Normally you’d apply paper or mesh tape and 3 coats of joint compound to the seams and over screw holes, but I like to overcomplicate literally everything and skim-coat the entire wall as a final step, too. I find that this gives new drywall just enough irregularity once painted to match adjacent plaster walls, since those are never so perfectly smooth!
It’s getting there! It’s getting there! Luckily I had a scrap of baseboard that was large enough to patch in the missing section, and old pieces of subfloor to patch the floor. It’s nice when the house provides the material to fix itself! The patched floorboards are the same dimensions as the originals, but the joints are tighter so things don’t quite line up. Don’t care! It’ll be covered anyhow by the dryer, but I don’t really mind funny staggered patches like that in wood floors.
Speaking of wood floors, now is the part where I openly admit: I cannot have white painted floors. My god, they are not for me. Some people (Swedes, primarily) seem to have no problem keeping white painted floors looking great for years, and I admire them. But the combination of dogs and a house under construction and frequently using the window in this room a couple years ago as an entrance while Edwin and I tore down additions and worked on restoring the exterior of this side of the house left these floors pretty destroyed and terrible looking. Even before that, they drove me crazy. Never. Again.
But…remember how I mentioned that this renovation is really just about getting the major players in place without draining significant funds, time, or mental energy? I mean that very seriously. For a while I was so hung up on needing to install a tile floor or run the wood flooring from the adjacent room into this one that I would get overwhelmed by the whole project. It would cost a lot! It would take a while! And it’s such a COMMITMENT and I don’t even really have a fleshed out design plan for this space so I don’t even know what I want! And I refuse to let this become a big project so I don’t even really want to have to know what I want! WOE IS ME!
THEN I realized I could actually just re-paint my fucked up white floor and nobody was likely to die as a result! Isn’t that something!
Sometimes reigning it in is difficult for me. Like all the time.
So. I patched a bunch of the larger gauges with Bondo, caulked here and there, chose a color off a paint chip (seriously, why in the world I think I can do this but would never advise anybody else to is beyond me), thoroughly cleaned the floor, and painted it!
Immediate Uh-Oh I Hate This. The color is a color-matched version of Farrow & Ball’s “Setting Plaster” and it’s roughly the color that would result if dried Bondo and a Band-Aid procreated. As a frequent user of both, this was not exactly what I had in mind.
While I stewed on that, I painted the walls and ceiling. I did not exactly think this through—I actually intended to just paint the new wall and touch-up just where necessary in the rest of the room (because restraint!), but once I got into it I realized how much everything would really benefit from a fresh couple of coats (because perfectionism!) so I ended up repainting the whole thing! Had I decided this beforehand I probably would have gone with a different color, butttttttt whatcha gonna do! On the plus side, I still had enough leftover paint from the first time around to eek out two coats! The paint is Clark + Kensington flat finish, and the color was called Casa Blanca but I cannot find it on the internet for the life of me and I think maybe it’s no longer part of the color deck. I’ve had the can for 5 years; who knows.
Unexciting color choice notwithstanding, there’s nothing like a fresh coat of paint. Even at this stage the room felt kind of…pretty?
I repainted all the trim Benjamin Moore Simply White which I’ve used all over the house (and also had the paint already!) and then forged ahead with the floor, figuring worst case scenario I’d just call this the primer and do something else…and then a great miracle occurred! I LOVE it! Context, man. It changes things. By the way, that’s the little teeny closet door for the little teeny closet under the attic stairs. It’s one of the cutest things in the house and makes me happy. Also, the laundry room is going to have its very own little closet! For stuff and things!
So. My quick n’ easy just-make-it-function laundry room got a little more TLC and time than I was even intending to give it, which honestly at this point I was pissed at myself about. BUT! It really feels like a whole new space, and ultimately I think I’ll be happy I went the extra mile for it.
Or, ya know, at least like a few blocks.

10 Things To Look Forward To In London In 2017
Forget 2016; here's what you need to look forward to in London in 2017. 1. Nordic Matters Festival, Southbank Centre The Southbank Centre is planning to explore all things Nordic through 2017, with some scandi-tastic special events. Think Moomins, Lego, hygge, saunas and gastronomic treats like cinnamon buns, pickling and curing — alongside the most inspiring and intriguing of Nordic art, mythology, literature and music. The programme looks at the Nordics' reputation as world-leaders in their approach to play, children and young people, gender equality and sustainability — and asks what the UK might learn from our northern neighbours. Nordic Matters, Southbank Centre, from 13 January throughout the year 2. Magical Lantern Festival, Chiswick House Hurrah! Last year's stunning Magical Lantern Festival at Chiswick House is back. Just as the rest of London's Christmas lights are put into storage, the grounds of Chiswick House are set alight with gorgeous illuminated sculptures. The theme for 2017 is the Silk Road, with Europe, Asia, Arabia, Egypt, Persia, India and Ancient China all represented. Look out, too, for the funfair, ice rink, and new VR experience that'll see you running round Chiswick House's grounds... with dinosaurs. Magical Lantern Festival, Chiswick House Gardens, 19 January-26 February 3. Robots at the Science Museum The Science Museum is going robot-mad in 2017, exploring the 500-year long story of humanoid robots. They'll be displaying more than 100 robots, from a 16th-century mechanical monk, to robots from science fiction, and those working in modern-day research labs. Visit, and you could find yourself interacting with some of the 12 fully-working robots on display. Robots, Science Museum, 8 February-3 September 4. Secret Cinema Brings Paris to London London's love for interactive theatrical experiences shows no sign of abating. As well as Alice's Adventures Underground returning to The Vaults, Secret Cinema is back in 2017 with Baz Luhrmann's Oscar-winning Moulin Rouge, starring Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman. Expect all the usual SC goodness, this time transporting you back to the sexy, seedy 1890s Paris, and down the into the treacherous alleyways and dancehalls of Montmartre during the Belle Epoque. Secret Cinema presents Moulin Rouge! From 14 February 5. Jane Austen 200 2017 marks 200 years since the death of Jane Austen, so expect various shows, exhibitions and special events to honour the occasion. There's already a British Library show called Jane Austen Among Family And Friends planned for January, and an exhibition at the House of Illustration in February. Emma (c) The Folio Society. Part of the House of Illustration exhibition. 6. A New Postal Museum, Clerkenwell When it opens in mid-2017, London's new Postal Museum will be more than a venue dedicated to showing off the unique history of our postal service (from Henry VIII through to pages of priceless Penny Black stamps, and, er, massive cats); it'll also contain a 15-minute ride through a miniature underground railway. Detail of the 1980s Greenbat train in tunnel 5. Yes, 'Mail Rail The Ride' is coming, and we're excited. 7. Pink Floyd at the V&A The V&A will be hoping for another blockbuster along the same lines as David Bowie Is... with their show for summer 2017. Pink Floyd: Their Mortal Remains will chronicle the music, design and staging of the enduring band, from their debut in the 60s through to the present day. The Pink Floyd Exhibition: Their Mortal Remains at the V&A runs from 13 May 8. 20th Anniversary of the first Harry Potter book 26 June 2017 marks 20 years since the first Harry Potter book went on sale. Expect plenty of celebratory shenanigans across London, as publishers Bloomsbury and other connected parties aim to get in on the hype. From October, there'll be a special exhibition on The Magic of Harry Potter at the British Library; the first of its kind celebrating a single series of books by a living author. We're sure this is just the beginning. Stay tuned for more Harry Potter goodness at the anniversary moves closer. Harry Potter's London 9. IAAF and the IPC Athletics World Championships 245 events over 20 days featuring 3,300 athletes from around the globe. The Summer of World Athletics at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park will be the biggest sporting event of 2017. Tickets for the IPC events start from £10; while you can see IAAF action for £20. It may well be Usain Bolt's final professional appearance in our city. World ParaAthletics Championships, 14-23 July; IAAF World Championships, 4-13 August 10. Hamilton, Victoria Palace Theatre 2017 is looking like quite a packed year for fans of blockbuster theatre shows. Sheena Easton is headed to the West End for the first time in 42nd Street at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane; while you can see Jane Asher in An American In Paris; and Imelda Staunton will be ranting in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf at the Harold Pinter Theatre. Then there's new musicals like a Bat Out of Hell, the musical, at the Coliseum in the summer, as well as not one, but two Gary Barlow musicals opening in London (The Girls, and Finding Neverland)... Plus David Tennant is back in the West End playing Don Juan, while Jude Law stars at the Barbican in Obsession, and Daniel Radcliffe celebrates the show that made Tom Stoppard famous with Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead. But the thing is, it doesn't really matter if you're Doctor Who, Dr Watson, or Harry Potter, there's only one theatre show that's going to steal all the limelight in 2017, and that's this: The hip-hop musical about the life of founding father Alexander Hamilton is one of Broadway's most successful shows ever. It'll open at the refurbished Victoria Palace Theatre in late 2017, perhaps November, and will star original cast member Lin-Manuel Miranda alongside homegrown talent. If you want to know if all the hype is worth it, you'll need to grab a seat when they go on sale early in the new year: 30 January 2017.

sneak peek for prompt #6: when everything feels heavy, I’ve learned to travel light. (Seven by Sleeping at Last)
It’s the sigh that’s most telling about how her day is going: a deep, exhausted sound set free as she moves a stack of completed forms into the outgoing bin on the corner of her desk. She’s been trapped in her office for most of the afternoon, catching up on paperwork that’s been forgotten for a week too long already.
Fridays are like that, sometimes. This one, though, had begun decidedly wife-free, breakfast and the school run left on her plate while Carina spent the day in back-to-back surgeries. It’s been a lonely afternoon, without their usual post-lunch phone call, and Maya can feel that all-too-familiar ache of missing her wife’s presence building in her chest.
Which is why she jumps when her personal cell phone starts to ring, diving for it excitedly in anticipation of Carina’s face on the screen. With her scrub cap still on, most likely, checking in on how the morning went or gushing about a successful surgery or simply whispering an I love you as she heads off to give a patient some challenging news.
What she isn’t expecting to see is their children’s school on the caller ID.
“Hello?” she answers quickly, swallowing hard as her heart rate increases.
What she isn’t expecting to hear is that no one is injured.
The frustration rears its head quickly, sharp against the missing Carina and the trapped in the office and the ready to go home and relax feelings that have been swirling inside her for most of the afternoon. She wishes it were Thursday as she rises from her desk, wishes it were any other day of the week when Carina would be the one to have time to deal with this.
But it’s Friday. And Carina’s in back-to-back surgeries. And the paperwork piled on her desk, unfortunately, can wait another day.
“I’ll be right there,” she says into the phone.
~~~
Maya clutches the steering wheel so hard on the short drive to the school that her fingers are stiff when she finally arrives. She takes a moment in the car to try to center herself - to breathe and let the colour seep back into her knuckles - but it does little to help.
The frustration still simmers just below the surface, insistent.
Their Beatrice has been in the first grade for only two weeks. Her backpack is still pristine, the pink character she’d chosen not yet stained beyond recognition. The package of pencil crayons she’d excitedly picked out are still all together in her pencil case, barely sharpened. Her shoes, with the laces she’s just learned to tie, are only beginning to look scuffed from recesses spent on the playground.
And yet, when Maya steps through the doors of the school and into the office, Beatrice is sitting on a chair below a placard that reads Principal Pacheco, swinging her legs nervously. Andrea, seated beside her, at least looks properly scolded; his eyes cast down and his shoulders hunched as though he’s trying to fold over into himself.
Three years at this school and their son has never so much as brought home a bad grade. His report cards have all featured glowing reviews of his work ethic, his intelligence, his kindness. He’d won the Compassion award just last Spring, beaming proudly from the front of the auditorium while Carina had tried to pretend she wasn’t crying.
Two weeks of Beatrice’s presence was all it took, apparently, to dash the record.
“What happened?” Maya hisses as she steps around the secretary’s desk to stare them down. All the calming breaths she’d taken in the car have already been forgotten, replaced with the itchy desire to make this day just fucking end.
The principal appears in her office doorway as if summoned by Maya’s anger. She smiles one of those tight, attempting-to-put-you-at-ease smiles that doesn’t quite reach her eyes, gesturing behind herself. “Mrs. Deluca-Bishop,” she says, “May we speak in my office?”
expanded prompts on archiveofourown.org: Hygge
prompt #7: a request was made on AO3 for a Maya-POV of chapter 5, which was something I had sort of already written while creating it... here’s my working draft from that
“Oh...kay,” Maya mumbles, looking down at the crying infant now cradled in her arms. Their daughter, just three weeks old, has inherited Bishop-blonde hair and the DeLuca lungs. The DeLuca temper, too.
“Shh,” Maya soothes, beginning to rock as her eyes travel across the main floor. The kitchen is in disarray, plastic cups and bowls abandoned across the counter in typical Andrea fashion - nothing quite making it to the sink he can’t yet reach. There’s a sippy-cup rolled under the kitchen table, milk dribbled out onto the tile beside it.
The living room isn’t much better; toys and books and burp cloths litter every surface, save for the one clear spot on the couch where Carina had been sitting when she walked in. Andrea sits on the floor amidst the chaos, wiping sleepily at his eyes as he hiccups.
“Mommy,” he whines, “Want juice.”
She sighs, the family-set of tears making sense. “Okay, bubba,” she says, moving closer, still rocking the screaming baby, “Let’s get some juice and some dinner, okay?”
He nods, pushing himself up from the floor. “Mama cry,” he tells her as his hand slips into hers.
It makes Maya smile, the innocence of him. “Yeah, little man, she is. But that’s okay, right? Sometimes we cry. Mommy and Mama, too.”
“Andrea cry,” he adds.
“Yes,” she agrees, “Even Andrea cries. And Beatrice.” She settles the baby against her shoulder as Andrea crawls into a chair at the table. She’s hungry, too, she’s sure; wanting for Carina and her breasts. But Carina is, obviously, out of commission and so she reaches into the cupboard for the unopened container of formula instead.
It’s a delicate dance: making a bottle to pop into the warmer while simultaneously digging through the fridge for some leftovers to feed Andrea. All without ever ceasing the movement that is momentarily quieting Beatrice’s wails.
She’s triumphant, somehow - a plate set in front of Andrea as she settles into a chair beside him with Beatrice and a bottle. The baby latches hungrily, finally quiet.
For the first time since she walked through the door, Maya feels herself start to relax. It’s been hard, going back to work knowing that Carina is at home attempting to juggle everything. The new house and the new baby and the new big brother all at once is a huge ask, as far as Maya can see, but Carina had been adamant that everything would be fine.
That they would all be fine.
This, though? This doesn’t look fine.
“What did you do today?” Maya asks as Andrea shovels pasta into his mouth.
He pauses for a moment, thinking. “Pups.”
She squints, trying to make sense of what he’s saying. “Pups?”
He nods.
“Paw Patrol?”
He nods again.
But that doesn’t make sense, either, because Carina doesn’t like to have the TV on during the day with the kids. And Paw Patrol, of all shows, is not one in Andrea’s repertoire thus far. Not educational enough, Carina had said.
“Bea no sleep,” Andrea adds as an after thought.
Ah. “Did you sleep?” Maya presses, the reality of Carina’s day quickly dawning.
Andrea shakes his head.
She glances up at the clock, deciding then and there that the actual timing of bedtime is irrelevant for two children that have done without all of their very necessary naps.
And so that’s what she does, once they’ve both finished eating. She whisks them upstairs for the fastest bedtime routine she’s ever done: baths and diaper changes and pyjamas. Andrea makes it through only a few pages of a story before he’s snoring softly, curled up tight in his bed. She pulls the extra bassinette from the nursery closet and settles Beatrice in that, taking the baby monitor with her when she closes the door.
In a whirlwind, she traipses back downstairs to tidy the kitchen and pick up the toys and only when everything is back to the way it normally is does she stop to breathe again.
Because this isn’t sustainable. This much burden on Carina isn’t fair - not to Carina or their kids or their home life. She sets to work on remedying it before Carina can talk her out of it once more.
been working on a piece for a few months - a sequel to travel light if you will - which is intended to begin the collection of the later years in Hygge universe
but I keep finding myself writing this one section in different ways, having it unfold in different locations and with different responses so that I now have four or five versions (at least) of just this one singular moment in time
to the point that I just sent another bit to @lacallemojada and she said, and I quote: “you’ll probably change it, but at least I got to read it, gracias!!!!”
y’all… y’all… am I too type A when it comes to writing?
