Wishing on Space Hardware update . . . I never actually started counting these, did I? Oh well, never mind. An Update, of indeterminate numeration.

I just finished posting Fic #18 over on Ao3, which completes the set up for the grand finale. Mwhaha. This brings the total word count to over 476,000 words. *expires on the spot* *revives immediately because it’s still not done!*

I had originally planned not to post the final arc until I had everything ready but honestly, all my plans around timing are vague suggestions at best and have consistently gone out of the window. C'est la vie.

I’m working steadily on Fic #19, the extremely reassuringly named ‘Ragnarök in G Minor‘, currently on chapter 7 of 20 (on top of which there will be a total of 10 prologues, interludes and epilogues). Overall, I think I’ve got about a third of the writing done, and the planning/plotting for the rest is unfolding nicely, so I’m feeling good about progress -- even if I can’t actually say when it’ll be done yet.

For those wondering about the title beyond the gag about invoking another Gundam series, I direct you to this harpsichord version of Bach’s Polonaise in G Minor, with reference to music used for Gjallarhorn in IBO and the character who has been the main instigator of chaos thus far. Also Mozart associated G minor with, to quote Wiki, “sadness and tragedy”. So. Yup.

Anyhoo, I thought since it will be a fair while before I get to posting, I would share some technical details one what I’m doing with #19 AKA here is the hole I am digging for myself.

I decided to structure this story so each chapter is told from a different character’s point of view. That is, each chapter focuses on a single character and that is the sole use of their POV in the narrative (excluding the epilogues where I’m going to mix and match). This is the technical maximisation of the strict single-POV-per-section style I’ve been using throughout the series, which is hard mode in terms of landing emotional beats but does force me to make each chapter the culmination of a particular character’s development. Not necessarily the end-point of their stories, you understand, but the point at which I can say, this is definitively what the character is like under my pen.

I think I’ve worked out an order that will let me tell the story I want using this method. It involves a a lot of jumping around temporally, the narrative looping back to tell earlier events from other perspectives, but that does means I can do some quite excellent chapter cliffhangers too (yes, a man with a gun IS going to spring through a door at a dramatic moment, because sometimes you really do just have to Chandler yourself out of a situation).

And it means I can do cute flourishes like entitling each chapter using a single word I associate with a character, and ending them on a quote from an appropriate song. Which admittedly does double my workload somewhat. I’ve managed to sort out the words but I still need to find songs for some people.

For your (hopeful) amusement, I’ll list out the chapter titles and then the characters with their associated songs under this spoiler-preventing cut. Have a go at guessing which go together, if you like. Some are pretty obvious, others probably less so. Regardless -- thank you for reading if you have been!

Buddy they ain't real, calm tf down

Listen, maybe you mean well, but the "They aren't real" advice is HORRIBLE.

Yes. They are fictional. But that doesn't mean it isn't problematic. Fiction is influenced by reality, and more often than not fiction can influence reality. Let me use an example. However, a major trigger warning for H@zbin H0tel, and mentions of r@pe. I'm not saying Ribbun is r@pey, but those two things are still mentioned in this.

Let's say that a victim of abuse watches something. And that material winds up glorifying the abuse they go through. This would reinforce that what they're going through is "okay" and "normal", and could also retraumatize them if they got out of that relationship. And before anyone says "but shouldn't they know?"

1. A victim is usually taught that what they're going through is "normal" and shouldn't be questioned.

2. "Shouldn't they know?" Unintentionally or not, is victim blaming. The fault is always on the abuser, not the victim.

Let me use a popular animated example of this: Valentino from Hazbin Hotel.

I wish I never had to mention him, but this is important. For anyone who doesn't know, he is a r@pist who abuses Angel Dust. While it could've been WONDERFUL representation of abuse in the adult industry, it is often:

- Sexualized and shown without warning (A r@pe fetishist storyboarded the scene and Vivziepop, who fetishes r@pe herself as seen on her old Zoophobia channel if you look at the playlists wrote it).

- Joked about it in a horrible manner (Vivziepop made the "the visuals the ¢ums with it" joke when advertising "Poison", a song about being r@ped. Also while this is a different character, Sir Pentious was dragged into a room to get r@ped, while he was drunk and crying out for help. As you'd expect from Vivzie, she made this a joke.)

Those are only 2 of the MANY things that are done wrong in Hazbin Hotel. I won't go into a full on rant on how terribly it's done, since:

1. It's been talked about a lot on Twitter already.

2. This is about Ribbun and the glorification of abuse, not Hazbin Hotel.

The reason I bring up Hazbin Hotel for this is because it led to a lot of victims being retraumatized and horrified. While yes, some were fine with it, Vivziepop not putting in a warning was atrocious of her. And even if there was a warning, it was still executed in an awful and disgusting way.

If you want links for proof, I'll be happy to provide them.

So what I'm saying is, even if it *is* fictional, it can cause issues, such as normalization of abuse in one's mind or retraumatizing someone. Ribbun would be one of those ships, because Jax pulls things at Gangle's expense, and like I said in my original post on this, even pulls a gun on her at one point. It would NOT be a healthy relationship, and therefore shouldn't be treated as one. I'm not saying "never write these relationships", I'm saying "if you're going to write a relationship like this, do so in a manner that properly shows why it's bad and how it hurts the victim." And before anyone else says "But what about enemies to lovers?", it is still shipping a relationship that in the original and is therefore inherently, abusive.

However, you are right about the tag thing. I don't know why I didn't think about it at first. Though there is a chance I have, and my memory is just fuzzy. Either way, thank you for the reminder on that.

I was the first triplet, so I picked a totally non-canonically birthday for them that they must now all obey (woops), but I did specifically pick a Leo/Cancer cusp because I felt like those were two very strong personalities that you could either lean into one or the other or both! Pepa’s definitely more on the Leo side, and a lot of these songs are about that big personality. The glamor! The showmanship! Wanting to be in the center of attention! Unfortunately I have not. I have never made a playlist for anything, ever. I have contributed to other people's, but I simply do not have the patience for it. Whenever a friend makes one for me I am incandescently happy because the alternative is rough and I'm stuck with playlists full of songs I dislike.

10. at what point in the process do you come up with titles, and how easy or hard is that for you?

Normally whenever it's time to post the first chapter, but there are exceptions! à la carte and The Devil's in the Details had their titles from conception and the documents reflect that because they don't just have random words as names. My archaeologist fic was called "prompt" for a while before I realized that was going to get confusing.

I don't find titles hugely difficult because I just try not to agonize over them. There are a couple that I'm not thrilled with, but I suspect it doesn't matter that much. I've never avoided reading a fic because I dislike a title, personally.

17. what is your favorite line you’ve ever written?

I was overthinking this, so I'll just pick something from my most recently posted fic! So spoilers for the archaeologist AU:

“But they grew complacent, Anakin, with time, through the generations. They stopped sending their young people as acolytes. They stopped tending to my altar. They had their tools and their toys and their innovations. They didn’t need me anymore,” Obi-Wan says, his voice almost nostalgic.

“Until they did.”

I don't know, I liked it! I normally write a lot of fluff and quips, but I like slightly terrifying ancient god Obi-Wan. I deliberately called back to some Mustafar imagery because even canon Obi-Wan once let someone burn, you know?

19. what are some books or authors that influenced your style the most?

I worry I'm not self-aware to recognize the influences. If I had to guess, I'd say the sorts of things I loved as a teenager shaped me, like Agatha Christie and Kurt Vonnegut. But now I'm going to go think about this harder. What is my style?

32. do characters influence your writing style?

I think so! I certainly try to alter my writing a little depending on POV character at least. Which is partially why I've never switched POV mid story, because I think I'll find it confusing. I do have a WIP where it's necessary though so I guess I'll see what happens.

We are getting psychological with Aftermath by Caravan Palace 😶

By looking at its lyric, I mostly linked this song with Overblot. In the game Dire Crowley mentions that the magician's overall state and well-being plays a huge role on the magician's magical limit before experiencing Overblot. This song reminds me of all intrusive thoughts and problems that come and you let go off, because you either think they aren't important enough or that you think that they are just thoughts and you can't let them take over you (if that makes sense 😅), until eventually they pile up in you until they "burst out" so to speak. In a similar way how we see Overblot happen in the games (kind of).

Another song that, in this case, talks about unsolved problems that the characters of this game refuse to talk about (until that is they overblot) is Burning Pile by Mother Mother.

In this song, the narrator first talks about how they have tried to talk about their problems but haven't gotten to do it. Rather than solve their problems they run away from them instead. This is shown in the chorus:

"It goes, all my troubles on a burning pile"

"All lit up and I start to smile"

"If I catch fire then I'll change my aim"

"Throw my troubles at the pearly gates"

The last two lines basically say that the narrator would rather die than solve their problems, as in death they would escape these troubles that they are facing. Again similar to how our characters deal with their problems (in a way).

What appealed me to take in this song is power in it, if that makes song. Not only that but it suits Riddle so much. Like these lyric are made for him:

Really in my mind, these lyric really speak of Riddle's determination and hard-working ways. This song also reminds me of when we hear that Riddle took the Dorm Leader position just a week after entering NRC, basically doing the impossible.

By looking at the lyric of this song one thing is apparent and that thing is that the era we are currently in is filled with so much information that we are losing our sense of creativity and freshness and becoming numb and artificial. As you probably noticed, this song is meant for Cater Diamond and his dependency for trendy and MagiCam worthy things.

Both the song and the MV mentions how everyone will imitate anyone for attention. Everyone wants to be unique, but by everyone being unique, uniqueness is the norm. Everything is already digested, and therefore doesn't have any flavour anymore.

This song also ties up with what we see in the Halloween Event, where everyone wants to be trendy and unique, but at the same time they are the same 🧐.

The Christmas Tradition Of The Vintage Scully Fanmix

In January of 2011, I made a Dana Scully fanmix. I always struggled to find songs I felt really fit her, but I made a fanmix anyway, just for my own edification. At the time I figured I’d probably post it on my LJ when it was finished (because that’s a thing people did in 2011, posted fanmixes on their LJs). But then I guess I wasn’t happy with it, so I didn���t post it.

When Christmas of 2011 rolled around, I was wrapping presents on the floor of my childhood bedroom, and for some reason I decided to put my Scully fanmix on while I wrapped. It’s a deeply melancholy fanmix, so I’m not sure why I did it. It was probably because I loved Scully and Mulder in that bone-deep way that made them feel like family—like people you want to hold extra close to your heart during the holidays.  

So I put on my Scully fanmix, and enjoyed its deep, lingering melancholy as a soundtrack for my Christmas wrapping.

Notably, 2012 was the year I finally moved on to a new OTP, after five long years shipping almost exclusively Scully/Mulder. But when Christmas of 2012 rolled around and it came time to wrap presents—yet again on the floor of my childhood bedroom—I remembered the melancholic pleasure of listening to my Scully fanmix the previous year, and decided to make a repeat of it.

And so I have done every year since. Nine Christmases in a row I have wrapped presents and listened to my Scully fanmix (which in 2011 I titled Quite A Lovely Army, though if I were to title it now I’d probably title it something different). I never made any changes to it after that first year, even though I undoubtedly would make a ton of changes if I were to make a Scully fanmix now.

This Christmas would be the tenth year of the fanmix tradition, but this Christmas it just didn’t happen. I was organized this year; I had boxes to disguise my gifts, which allowed me to wrap them in the living room. And for some reason it just felt wrong to put on my Scully fanmix in the company of other people. So I guess this is the end of an annual tradition.

And that’s why this year I decided to post the darn thing.

It changed a bit, in that first year, as you can see by the fact that Not Only Human by Heather Nova is listed on the back cover art, but was later removed from the mix. Not sure why I removed it, to be honest. It’s a good one (and has the distinction of being used in a particular, much loved Scully fanvid from ye old days of 2004).

I was never convinced anyone would vibe with this mix but me, and after being out of the fandom for a decade, and actively forgoing S10 and S11, I’m all the more certain it is a fanmix with an audience of one. But after all these years, having finally broken the tradition, I wanted to give it a send off of some kind. And I thought, what better way to do that than to finally take the final step I neglected to take back in 2011, and post it? So here it is.

1. Hopeful Hearts by Sarah Slean 

Fiends and devils in the garden

But I still have my secret weapon

This my brave and hopeful heart

Incidentally, this is also on my Peter Parker playlist. But a decade before that, it was one of my favorite Scully songs.          

 2. Wonderwall (instrumental) by The Vitamin String Quartet 

All the lights that lead us there are blinding, is a very X-Filesean line. I always particularly identified Wonderwall with S5 and S6. The word is on the street that the fire in your heart is out, makes me think of Mulder's doubt in S5, and his apathy and discouragement throughout most of S6.    

3. Notes From The Underground by Sarah Slean

Mulder and Scully, the weirdos in the basement. Spooky Mulder and Mrs. Spooky—aka, the world’s leading paranatural cryptozoologist-pathologist*. Partners, first, last, and always.

 4. Ordinary Life by Kristen Barry 

Heel to toe takes you from my side

In and out, every breath divides

My eyes to your head, I can't go the distance

Could be a CancerArc track, or a S8 and S9 track. Numbing pain and a sense of helplessness.

 5. Sound Of Water by Sarah Slean 

Sometimes the sword is so heavy

The pain has a ravenous mouth

In the pits of my own making

Sometimes I don't think I'll ever get out

Loosely anthemic, but it’s mostly the sound of this one that clinched it as a Scully track for me. Kind of spirited and refined at the same time.  

 6. Red Moon by David Gray 

I'm getting tired of

Being denied of

Things getting in my way

And if I'm quiet that's 'cause there's nothing left to say

Again, it’s more the sound and the emotion of this one than the lyrics specifically. Definitely post-William, though.

 7. My Invitation by Sarah Slean 

She has such an awful lot of soldiers

Quite a lovely army all her own

Night and day they stand before the fortress

Very safe but very all alone

Probably best suited to the CancerArc, particularly towards the end of S4, as things become increasingly grim.

 8. Falling Down The Mountainside by David Gray 

Without a word you set your sights into the sun

When all the world you put to rights is still so wrong

Pin your heart out on your sleeve

Spouting all that make believe

From your lips it seemed it might come true

Falling down the mountainside with you

This is the second of my two quintessential Scully tracks. I was originally going to have this be the last track, because in its own quiet way it's very comprehensive. But to end on such a fateful note, when it’s already such a sorrow-packed fanmix, felt wrong.  

 9. Kissing Song by Dawn Landes 

And it's meeting that will make them love sick

Distinctly a S7 track. This is a Scully song, to me, because it is focused on order and chaos: the unanswered phone, the unanswered knock at the door, the unacknowledged maelstrom outside. That's Scully's challenge not Mulder's—learning to embrace chaos and uncertainty in some situations.

The first time I heard this song I imagined Mulder and Scully conspiring together at the edge of a dance floor during some formal function they'd been ordered to attend. I imagined this song coming on, and somehow, with barely a word spoken, they end up falling into a (perfectly professional, hands-in-appropriate-places, but nonetheless achingly yearning) slow dance.

Many of these stuffs i was talking about were the things that happened at work because mainly my life is just between home and the work. and as you could imagine some work environment can be very toxical with a lot of politics involved, and because i was in a such role to discuss with other parties that are not my side of the team i had to often times represent my twhole division to discuss and argue with others to defend my team. and It could easily become very muddy, dirty and finger pointing. I’ve got hammered down a few times at work and they became very traumatic for me. i was trying to stay clean and transparent about my stuff so i said thing just as they were, and not giving them what they wanted to hear, and yea. But anyways, i couldn’t agree with you more to ur saying about LEGO (lego in capital letters makes it so much like it lol) and rocket in general. and Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

Do you still hold your own small world inside of you? You know those small worlds where you can nurture your own imaginations, dreams, thought processes, ego, self esteem and all that?

winters have come to me about few years ago, and started to shadow over my life a little bit. and I had to make some mess inside of that small world. Funny thing is.. sometimes u get to hate what you used love especially when things go bad around u. it's really irony but that's how strong the perspective plays its role in our life I think. I used to love and care for my small world and built the strong wall around it, but for some reason it became like a very dark gotham city haha not that I'm a batman who tries to save it but more like one of those villains that lives in gotham city who's full of hatred LOL. yeah it sounds bit too stretchy, and yea probably i'm just stretching it to just make it sound funny..^^* LOL. just, there has been some undisclosed paradox in my life which i interpreted things wrongly and things went bad, and i no longer can fully trust my own thoughts or ideas. i'll keep that a short like that because it's not gonna be a good story anyways and i think i already said many bluesy things up there lol. ^^; excuse me for writing such stuff, i’m also slightly venting in here,

I'm glad I'm making you feel happy, (i hope so haha) and I'm glad you're no longer in that toxic situation, i mean.... Jobs are usually hard but I've heard people say your job should be like "you're being paid to do what you love" and sometimes were privileged enough to do it but sometimes were not, and when you are in a toxic environment where your mental and physical are threatened you should think about it twice before staying there, but also we should try a little more, because we're not always the victims in bad situations, sometimes it's our fault, what I mean is that we should analyze both parties right? Your side and their side, sometimes were taking things too personal, but others times we should be taking them personal. It's all about balance and knowing were yours boundaries are but also knowing your weak points.

Of course I do have my own little world, and I'm happy to keep a couple of things just for myself. Because at the end of the day I'm all i have, and of course there's situations where our small world is troubled but why should we give our energy to something that doesn't deserve it, idk, sometimes we worry about such little things and we feed them and feed them and feed them just but thinking about it,then they start to be bigger than us when they should've just never existed in first place, something's are not worth it, is not even worth it to be thinking about them, and yeah, sometimes we change our mind and the things that we used to love are not pleasant anymore, that's what growing up is about, but that doesn't make you a villain, that makes you a human, you're not wrong for changing your mind.

Sometimes we push so hard so things to go on our way when we're better how we are, have you heard "go with the flow"? That's what we should do, a sudden situation happens? Let it happen, take the best from it, learn from it and keep going, of course God is there for us, we should look for him, and we'll find him!
