Whenever I think about xuexiao, I always ponder over to which extent Xue Yang was aware of his own emotions. Did he even comprehend that he is capable of loving someone or has he been experiencing something wild without ever stopping to reflect on it? Whatever the answer is, I like to believe that there was a stage somewhere in first half of their domestic bliss, where Xue Yang was completely oblivious. He got to the point where he didn’t want to see Xiao Xingchen sad and always tried to cheer him up, but his sole reasoning behind it was “daozhang looks prettier when he smiles”. And yet the “prettiest” moment Xue Yang’s brain has registered was when he told a joke that made Xiao Xingchen laugh (with lots of wheezing and snorting) so hard he fell off the bench he was sitting on.

3 thoughts: 1) what do you think would have or might have happened had Song Lan never reached Yi City? 2) omegaverse Xuexiao? 3) i have recently been converted to a couple rare pairs, Nielan (without Meng Yao) and Jin Zixuan/Jiang Cheng. Thoughts on these or other rare pairs?

ooh, okay, taking these one at a time.

1. The entirely non-flippant answer I have to give is "it depends on what you want to have happened." I recognize that's unsatisfying! But the great thing about Yi City as a story is that it is somehow simultaneously agonizingly inevitable and infinitely malleable.

So I can see a version where Xiao Xingchen finds out who Xue Yang is some other way, they argue, Xue Yang whips out his fun fierce corpse trick trivia, Xiao Xingchen kills himself. Or a version where that all happens but Xiao Xingchen refuses to believe that Xue Yang was telling the truth, kills Xue Yang, and spends a long, long time grieving and miserable and full of doubt. Or a version where Xiao Xingchen finds out who Xue Yang is some other way, takes a-Qing, and leaves, because he can't stand to kill his friend but he also can't stand to stay. Xue Yang follows, because of course he does. Does he catch up? What happens when he does? Or a version where Xiao Xingchen finds out who Xue Yang is and everything about the fierce corpse stuff and tries to kill himself but Xue Yang is able to stop him and they're left frozen in horrible, dysfunctional limbo where Xiao Xingchen can't die but can't live but can't kill his friend but can't let his friend live.

Or there's a version where Xiao Xingchen never knows. Where they live the rest of their lives - or at least, the rest of Xue Yang's life, which is likely to be significantly shorter than Xiao Xingchen or a-Qing's - in blissful domesticity, Xiao Xingchen entirely ignorant and Xue Yang settling comfortably into his new life. The rest of the world never intrudes.

Or Xiao Xingchen never knows, another cultivator comes to town and recognizes Xue Yang and kills him. Xiao Xingchen learns who he was after the fact and has to deal with both the grief of his friend's death, a lot of unanswered questions, and a lot of guilt. Xiao Xingchen doesn't learn who he was and only knows that his friend was murdered.

Anyway, you get the picture. I think the main thing is that I've seen it said that it was inevitable that it was going to fall apart eventually, and I don't necessarily think that's true. In one sense it is. In another it isn't. It's inevitable and it's infinitely escapable. That's what makes it so good.

2. I am not much of an omegaverse person with, like, two exceptions in my fandom life, and I'm afraid to say that xuexiao has not been one of them. I'm sorry! It's just not my bag in general for a lot of reasons and I don't think it adds anything for me here.

3. I'm afraid I am going to immediately bounce off pretty much any pairing that has Nie Mingjue in it because of my general indifference/dislike of the man, and that one I find particularly troublesome because it doesn't have Jin Guangyao in it and often, ime, comes along with certain opinions about Jin Guangyao that I vehemently do not share. Also though I am very much a multishipper in this case my Xiyao heart just can't take it.

As far as Jiang Cheng/Jin Zixuan, I feel like I spend so much of my energy around Jiang Cheng obsessing about his sibling relationships and his relationship with Jin Ling that I don't have space to ship him with other people (and also pretty squarely headcanon him as ace besides), but purely conceptually I find the idea of Jin Zixuan having at least a little bit of a thing for every one of the Yunmeng siblings (yes, including Wei Wuxian) patently hilarious.

Yi City arc can’t be understood without xuexiao

in the same way WOH can’t be understood without wenxu.

Why did Xue “better dead than bored” Yang stay for three years in a backwater dingy town without completing his revenge?

Why did he stop his special hunts?

Why did Xiao Xingchen settle down instead of leaving to keep on with his wandering daoshi carreer after his nameless patient recovered from his injuries?

Why didn’t Xue Yang use Song Lan to hurt Xiao Xingchen on his own accord, rather than only after he was already discovered?

Would have Xue Yang used Song Lan to hurt Xiao Xingchen in any capacity if A-Qing hadn’t snitched on him?

Would the domestic bliss have stopped in any way if it wasn’t for outside interference…?

…and why, why did Xue Yang spend the rest of his life trying to bring Xiao Xingchen back?

Ship It

1. What made you ship it?

Pretty much immediately from canon, because of the contrast between Xue Yang's general homicidal brattishness and the domesticity of his time living with Xiao Xingcheng and how he obviously falls in love with him and that life, over being for the first time appreciated as a human being, even as his complete lack of moral and lack of proper socialization doesn't allow him to properly express or even admit to himself. Xiao Xingcheng also obviously enjoyed his whimsical nameless friend and appreciated that closeness with someone when he couldn't realize who he was.

2. What are your favorite things about the ship?

It's such a sharply tragic set up when everyone is already completly spoiled from the outset, it's just a temporary delay until XXC comes to realize who XY is.

3. Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?

I don't think so.

It used to be the fandom mostly had top Xue Yang, and I actually enjoy the opposite dynamic more (it's rare for me to have top/bottom preferences so it was just a minor point), but then the fandom started going the other way.

First lil xuexiao ramble since I'm trying to be active again and also I have a reincarnation au and this kinda matter so like why not

Ok we all know xue yang has the "fuck around and find out" mentality most of the time and I just know if time loops were involved in yi city it could go many ways and most of them are probably not very ideal

You know xue yang in his element is very experimental with everything but I can't decide if he's the type of person to weigh every possibility or if he's just hyperfocused on one outcome but just morphs his methods around if it doesn't work and this is where that time loop shit comes in if he was like self aware of it and it's never a good thing for xue yang to be self aware. His outcome is ultimately keep xingchen and go back to his little happy domestic life and that's it but I feel what he fails to realize is to do that he kinda has to give a fuck about the people around xingchen too? I'm not saying he would completely disregard the slaughtering of song lan's temple (I mean that was the event that kinda led xingchen and him to their little fucked up domestic life) but I am saying he'd just find another outcome that was both to his advantage and kept xingchen happy

Almost like "Look! I kept Song Lan alive this time! (He is severely incapacitated) Xingchen didn't kill him! I got my revenge and we're still happy! What else could possibly go wrong?"

Maybe he'd replace xingchen's eyes or get rid of a-qing if he had to? It's very fucked up and I can't think of every possibility rn but like I said his end goal is just staying with xingchen and keeping him happy I think he couldn't care less about anybody else unless they were the ones fucking it up and ultimately that's where he can't win in a way? Cause one way or another time is gonna move forward no matter how much xue yang tries to keep everything in place and xingchen's gonna come to see horrific discovery and ironically it's just gotta start all over again until something in either of them drastically changes to accommodate the harsh reality of their relationship

One time, Zichen stupidly asks him if he’d come along if it was, say, Zichen’s mom performing flute solo in her orchestra and Xue Yang, who’s busy with cracking his stiff neck, answers in kind, wondering how Zichen would feel about visiting the sort of back alley where Xue Yang’s mom is probably earning her living, and admire her while she performs a lap dance. That particular subject never comes up again and Zichen slowly starts to realize even more that being Xue Yang is to have a very different life and that some of the lines dividing them, are neither accidental nor chosen, but simply painful to try and cross.

2022 Fic Rec Time!!!

The year is finished, so it is time to look back and go through the best AO3 treasures I found these last 12 months!! And since XueXiao has been the bane of my existence ever since i discovered it, I decided to make a top 10 list of them!

So these are (in no particular order) my favourite (song)xuexiao fics:

- the backyard is full of bones by @veliseraptor A thoroughly enjoyable what-if with Xiao Xingchen being a bit smarter about the wounded man he found. Extremely well paced and written, it eases into the enemies-to-lovers dynamic perfectly, and it depicts characters so believable and well-rounded that it practically feels like canon.

- I promised you a garden by @lady-of-the-lotus A short snippet into an alternate timeline where Song Lan’s consciousness is trapped in a paperman and forced to bear witness to the yizhuang’s (very sexy) domestic life. Cute and frustrating and very, very satisfying. (One of those where Song Lan’s not having a good time, which might be one of my favourite tags).

- Now that I see you by @10holmes Don’t usually go with unfinished projects, but this one is an absolute treasure which’d need to work very hard to go awry, so of course I’ll have it here. We have a double canon divergence with Not Blind!Xiao Xingchen, and Amnesiac!Xue Yang!! Which make for a delightfully angsty relationship as they both tiptoe around each other, all while battling with internal turmoil, conflicting morals and a misplaced low sense of worth. A fic absolutely worth keeping track of.

- The prisoner of Jinlintai by @fieri-sentio-et-excrucior A rather recent project that had us in tethers for a month and a half (!) with the very sexy prompt of Xiao Xingchen being framed and arrested by the Jin, while a certain guest disciple with a sweet tooth was still around... Another enemies-to-lovers with a wonderfully natural evolution in their relationship, with the extra treat of a rich and entertaining world building that could easily sprout a few spin-offs.

- Nothing but a way of shading blood by @veilchenjaeger This one is very recent, but it shoot up to my top 10 immediately, both for the marvelous writing style and the perfect way they executed the prompt. It provides just the right amount of anguish in Xiao Xingchen, before and after certain discoveries are made, and the diplomacy game with Jin Guangyao and his minion just adds an extra flavour in an already spicy mix.

- Heaven has a road but no one walks it by @silvysartfulness The second (and last) ongoing project here, but just as deserving of the spot. This book-sized treasure is a long journey of (re)discovery, of a slowly kindling relationship with wonderful twists and turns. The slow pace balances out perfectly with some intense (and, in one occasion, thriller-like) action scenes. Also, it was the fic that made me see SongXueXiao with a more favourable opinion.

- lie back and let me unlock you by @veliseraptor A short and extremely sexy xuexiao roll in the hay, with the amazing prompt of Xiao Xingchen being (quite shamefully) aroused at the thought of his old enemy Xue Yang, and good ol’ Chengmei offering to rolplay. The result is even more unbelievable that what you can imagine!

- On the topic of cold by @andreri25 A cute little snippet in the early days at Yi City, where Xiao Xingchen almost dies from hypothermia and Xue Yang has to keep him warm. So what if he takes advantatge? Daozhang won’t remember, and he does need some hot friction after all! It’s wicked and cute in equal parts, because Xue Yang starts off really concerned (even if he wouldn’t admit it or know why, really) but changes gears when the danger is over...

- Final victory by @fieri-sentio-et-excrucior A funny concept very well executed, particularly in the emotional response both Xiao Xingchen and Xue Yang give at the different turns of the plot. Daozhang discovers that his old enemy is in town, killing people, and after recovering from the surprise, Chengmei offers his help to hunt him down. Cue some well-placed deceit and a cruelly cute happy ending.

- it hurts at first (but it ain’t that bad) by @veliseraptor Yet another change in dynamics with Xiao Xingchen discovering his mysterious friend’s identity, if only this time because Xue Yang flat-out tells him (well, he thought he was done for anyways). What follows is a wonderful deluge of arguments, moral dilemmas and Xue Yang’s particular brand of twisted social logic that allow a deeper (and less deadly) reprise of their last canon conversation. Just lovely.

Which one of those I like best? I don’t know. I don’t care! They are all fantastic.

AND, since this year was also the first I started actually writing some original content, and not only devouring other artists amazing works, lemme put them here as well >w<

- Phantom Threat The foregone conclusion of all the fix-its that have xuexiao become an item (sans hidden identities, that is), in which Song Lan arrives at Yi City and does what he should have done in canon and talks directly with Xiao Xingchen, to reveal the terrible secret... which he already knows about.

- To carry a bit of yesterday A small slice of life in the Three Year Bliss, where Xiao Xingchen wants a family portrait and despite being quite contrary to the idea, both a-Qing and Xue Yang end up complying. It has amazing art by @wrathyforest, too!! ^-^

AND FINALLY, just a few non-xuexiao fics I also loved to the moon and back, but have little-to-no connection other than belonging to the mxtx universe.

- You’re stuck with me by LikeAFlamingKiss_Consume A delightful jadecest with dark!Lan Xichen (well, dark!Everyone and their mother, it’s a fucked up AU) and a reluctantly horny Lan Zhan.

- Blood array by @giraffeter Though it could technically be a xuexiao fic, the actual fucking here is between Demonic Gremlin Team Extraordinaire! Xue Yang and Wei Wuxian, sooo... doesn’t count. The fic is entertaining, very sexy and their interaction is marvelous to follow!

- Qi Rong’s day off by @ahintofblue Too bad the only tgcf fic to make the cut is a very, very nsfw alternate outcome of the mausoleum scene from book 2, but what can I do? The writing’s so smooth and engaging, it’s rough and cruel and I loved every single minute of it.

I have the gnawing feeling I’m still forgetting something, either here or in the xuexiao part... but until I discover the way to check which fics I left kudos in, I either go through an ocean of titles from my ao3 history page (that won’t even let me filter!!!) or I just wait for my two braincells to click one day. Oh, well!

And outside of those, I prefer similarly themed(?) crossovers. But sometimes you feel like exploring and come across a crossover that you didn’t think would work well at all. The differences and similarities between the main pairings were just really nice :’D’

2. hello! I know this is a wangxian blog mostly but I was just curious if anyone knows any good xuexiao fics? Not ones with heavy angst or unhappy endings. So many xuexiao fics are far too sad for me and I was hoping someone might know some fics that are happier. I just read Misalignment by Kasasagi and was looking for something kind of similar? In that Xue Yang and Xiao Xingchen have a healthy relationship / talk things through and a happy ending. Could be either Canon or modern era. Also please no songxiaoxue. And that kind of mentality and upbringing takes a lot to break free from, and yelling at someone for it isnt exactly helpful. And the Lans are always written as being mad at wwx for not realizing lwj was in love with him when there really was no way wwx could have clued into that pre-resurrection? Are there any fics that just... point out how cruel that kind of treatment is? That call people out for ALWAYS blaming wwx even when it's not really his fault?
