Climate Change: From X-Country Skiing to Urban Walking
February 15, 2024 We have always done x-country skiing in Ottawa for fun and exercise during the winter months. Snow could come as early as December but never later than by Xmas. We have always had up-to-date equipment, and nothing was better than being outdoors in the fresh air on a sunny day. Sometimes, it was cold, but layered clothing did the trick, and when it was frigid, we started skiing…

I don’t feel like I’m a particularly conflict averse person, or that it’s something that really marks most of my interactions day to day, or interactions generally or what have you. I think my bold outlier around risk management is in the mountains. anyway, some friends are planning a snowshoe in an area that’s been at moderate-considerable risk all week, and just got downgraded to low-moderate BUT LIKE none of them have any type of safety training with avalanche risk or winter rescue. Two of them were “planning to do it this winter” which is good but doesn’t really make a difference about tomorrow ????
kinda sucks being the safety weenie, actually the whole conversation has really got me bent out of shape. like it will probably “be fine” but it just bothers me that until I brought up this weeks forecasting and bulletins no one from the group had even thought to pull up the avalanche canada website?? good god
Right now I feel like friends are either without any avvy awareness at all and unwilling to learn (deal breaker for me), or are friends who are super educated and experienced w rescue but are way way way too hardcore for me (I simply could not keep up and would need to be mentally carried by the group)

Do you know much about skijoring? I’m wanting to try it with my two dogs but I’m not sure how to start it. I bike them 7-10km almost every day with a Springer, and they love it, but I’m looking at doing some more winter stuff (that hopefully involves less of me slogging through snow?)
I have not personally skijored, but the principals of what the dog should be taught are the same as with other pulling sports like sledding, bikejoring etc.
My major concern would be: how GOOD of a cross country skiier are you already? How are you with the skate-skiing aspect of cross country skiing? Skijoring requires some skill on skis before you move on to doing it with a dog. If that aspect is intimidating you can always look into kicksleds such as the Esla Kickspark. They are plenty appropriate for 1-2 dogs.
Another concern for me would be that your dogs are used to running with you on the bike with the springer. There's nothing bad with the springer, but it is a side attachement that discourages pulling and your dogs need to be taught and learn how to pull, stay out in front of you and take commands from behind before they can move on to sports like bikejoring, sledding or skijoring. These sports have the dog in front because if the dog runs to the side there is a high likelihood of tangles and additionally when the dog is pulling actual weight/people/etc. pulling to the side is not ideal for their full strength or health of movement. I highly suggest starting out these concepts with you on foot as it is much safer than just hooking the dog up and hoping for the best.
THIS Facebook group (Dog Powered Sports 2.0) is a great resource and they have both helpful files and experienced veterans who can answer questions or guide you to sources of information.

I like documenting winter not for its so-called picturesque qualities but for its transformative force and ability to repurpose the landscape....however sometimes the picturesque get in the way.

1. any boys on the horizon?
2. any goals for this year?
3. you ever feel lonely?
1. Been talking a bit with one, but they bailed on meeting in person plans three times, so leaving it in their court going forward. Being flirted with by another, but unsure if that's just them being them or if they are actually interested.
2. Hopefully find a good location to open a new clinic! And if there is a good dump of snow I want to go xcountry skiing, but it's been a terrible winter for that. Also want to see friends more this year.
3. Sometimes, but generally I'm not. I have many friends, and I see my core group a lot. But I have been so busy this year that I haven't been able to see my other friends as much as I would like, and many are very busy with young kids or job changes as well. I really only feel lonely when I feel like I'm an afterthought to people and plans get forgotten.
