Does it ever make you a little crazy insane thinking about how Jesper and Wylan both have these gaping absences in their families, these needs that haven't been met for years, but as their stories become parallel, they find exactly what they need in each other's lives?
Because okay, hear me out, Jesper couldn't save his mom, nor can he ever bring her back, but he was able to help Wylan save his mom. His mom who was supposed to be dead. He was able to help bring her back in a way that he will never able to do for his own mom. And no, she'll never be Aditi, but I think she'll grow to love him as a son-in-law.
Wylan, meanwhile, lost his father's love at a young age. He will never be good enough for Jan, because Jan refuses to love or accept him as he is. But Colm, Jesper's father who loves him, who only wants the best for his son, meets Wylan when he's easily at his lowest point in life, when he's wrapped up in crime and scandal, and what does he say? "I think you’d be good for [Jesper]." And that means everything.
Jesper and Wylan don't just complement each other as a couple, their lives thread together like stitches closing long open wounds.

Jesper “guard against pain” vs Wylan “guard against joy”
Jesper’s jokester and confident façade was to protect himself from feeling pain, but inside he’s insecure and vulnerable. He hid his grisha nature because the only person who ever treasured it was taken away from him, and grew up being told that it was a curse. So instead he acts like he doesn’t need it. He acts like he takes all the losses and all the hurtful things in good stride but deep inside he’s feeling lost and guilty all the time. That boy is always bouncing on his feet with guilt all the time in the duology. Guilt for disappointing everyone: his father, Kaz, Inej, his mother, and himself. When he thought about Wylan at the end of SOC he thought Wylan wouldn’t want to hang out with criminals like him anymore once he got the money and that had stung more than he thought: it’s the boy inside him feeling abandoned again, the boy that does no good to anyone other than in a fight. And he cope with all that pain, that guilt, with his addiction and his gunslinging - which no one really paid any mind until Wylan saw through his façade.
Wylan, whose joy and hope was taken away from him by his father, was always made to feel less than, shared the same constant feeling of guilt for just being who he is. His father made sure of it, that he knows he’s not allowed to feel anything but anxious and guilt, and his joy was to be choked out of him (metaphorically and literally). Wylan in the show couldn’t even believe when Jesper told him he was smart, thinking it was just a trick to coddle him into some false sense of joy before it would be taken away again. Wylan in the books still holding on to the last shred of decency for his father until that moment at Saint Hilde, instead blaming himself for it, maybe because it would give him a false sense of control over his own pain. Until Jesper saw his own guilt mirrored in Wylan, and helped him to his feet.
Both Jesper and Wylan were able to keep some part of goodness in the face of everything that happened in their lives: Jesper with his good spirits, Wylan with his morals - standing up against Kaz again and again despite being threatened every time. In Jesper, Wylan learned to accept joy again, and that this won’t be taken away from him. And in Wylan, Jesper knew that he has a safe space where he can accept his pain and heal from it in a healthy way.
“You can love something despite seeing all of its flaws.”
Anyway, Wesper is each other’s safe haven.

"kaz's backstory" this, "matthias's death" that. what about the scene at the asylum.
wylan finding out his mother is alive. him standing there and pretending not to know her. him finding all the paintings she did of him. him holding it together until he finally breaks down on the road outside and accepts that his father is evil.
i am not ready

After Wylan and Jesper`s reconciliation in Ep 6, they spent a significant part of their screentime practically glued to each other. And here`s a nice example of that:
Tumblr media
When Wylan yells 'Shield your eyes!' Jesper is the only one who doesn`t move a single freakin` inch. The only thing he does to protect himself is basically just what Wylan tells them to do, namely covering his eyes with his forearm.
Well, Jesper is standing behind Wylan so he doesn`t need to literally get out of harm`s way the way Tolya, Tamar and Nikolai do. But neither do Nadia and Kaz , yet they turn away and practically get down covering their heads. This also might be recklessness overriding the self-preservation instinct. Yet I think said instict is indeed being overridden here but by something different: the need to be close to Wylan and the trust Jesper puts in him.
As mentioned above, Jesper and Wylan have not gone far from each other`s side since they made up. They believe that is where they belong, and Jesper`s instincts apparently tell him that staying close to Wylan is more important than getting an additional protection from potential harm. Besides, Wylan has told them to shield their eyes, so that`s enough! Wylan knows what he`s doing and what the rest should be doing where his chemicals and explosions are concerned.
I am right by your side. I trust you. This is a far cry from 'To be clear, I trust you 'cause Kaz trusts you'. And this is absolutely beautiful.

My headcanon that isn't actually a headcanon because it's freaking dumb (but it made me laugh):
Jesper and Wylan have a guest room for Kaz that he can crash at whenever he wants, but he always refuses to and snaps at them to leave him be and stop mothering him.
They eventually do and one day, after months of Kaz refusing to spend a single night there, they let someone else sleep in it.
They wake up to someone prodding them in the middle of the night. It's Kaz looming over them and matter of factly asking why there's a stranger occupying his room. Jesper takes him by the scruff and kicks him out of the house.

do y'all ever think about what if maybe wylan didn't want to run the van eck empire after jan was thrown in jail? he inherits everything his father and family before him has built at such a young age, and while he's fully capable, it's still such a massive thing to deal with. i feel like him maybe not wanting to do that with his life is never really explored. in conclusion i will be thinking about my boy and will probably be caught writing something pertaining to this.

My thesis of The Crows as Taylor Swift Albums because I’m on a long car ride right now and I don’t have anything else to do lol:
Kaz: reputation. This one is self self-explanatory. Reputation fronts as a very dark, edgy, revenge filled album, which it is, BUT under the surface, it’s actually a deeply emotional/romantic album, which is just extremely Kaz. LWYMMD is at the top of my as of now purely hypothetical Kaz magnum opus playlist.
Inej: Speak Now. Speak Now is a album that’s about growing up and picking yourself up after you’ve been wronged, which is definitely Inej. One of her best qualities is her strength, resolve, and ability to maintain her faith and hope. I love her <3
Matthias: This was the hardest because I was torn between Midnights and Fearless, but I’m going to give it to Fearless. As Taylor herself says, it’s an album about the “fearlessness of falling in love” and about entering a new stage in your life, which is literally the thesis of Matthias’ whole arc.
Wylan: folklore. I feel like this is also kind of self-explanatory, but folklore is a very dreamy album that’s filled with lots of depressing things, yes, but it ends on a bit more of a hopeful note. It’s also a very isolated album in vibes which is definitely Wylan. Before he lets himself get close with the other crows, he’s very alone. Wylan Van Eck, army of one and all.
Nina: Red. Red is an album that goes from incredibly upbeat songs to incredibly depressing ones which is very Nina. It’s a fun album that uses these upbeat songs to offset/mask all of the sadness which is definitely Nina.
Jesper: 1989. Besides the fact that 1989 is just a very upbeat album with lots of fun dance songs, it also explores sadder topics like loneliness and feeling like you’re not enough, but it’s not always noticed at first listen because of the fun tempo. That’s very Jesper, who uses his fun loving persona as a kind of deflection.
Also, bonus: Kanej is evermore, Helnik is Midnights, and Wesper is Lover
