Chinese Moon Lore The Woodcutter on the Moon

In traditional Chinese folklore, Wu Gang is the woodcutter who lives on the moon and spends his time endlessly trying to cut down a magical tree that has the ability to heal and re-grow.

There are several tales explaining the reason for Wu Gang’s existence on the moon, including one in which he offends the Jade Emperor. As punishment he is banished to the moon to continuously prune the self-healing tree. This constant pruning and re-growth is symbolic of the moon’s continuous cycle of waxing and waning.

Wu Gang is essentially the Chinese Sisyphus, and as such, in modern China the phrase ‘Wu Gang chopping the tree' is an idiom for endless toil.

蝶恋花·答李淑一 (Reply to Li Shuyi) by Mao Zedong (毛泽东). 1957.

As well as leading China from 1949 to 1976, Mao Zedong was also a prolific poet. One of his most famous works, Reply to Li Shuyi, was written on May 11, 1957, and was created in the “butterfly lover flower” (蝶恋花) format of Song dynasty “ci” (词) that is generally employed for emotional poetry. This format stipulates that the poem be split into two verses and have a total of 60 characters. Written in the years following the execution of Communist leader Liu Zhixun (柳直荀) to his widow, Mao makes reference to Chinese mythology: Wu Gang is a Sisyphus-like man who is condemned to live on the moon and cut down a laurel tree that heals itself. The ‘Willow’ in the poem refers to Liu, whose surname is the same as the character for willow; and the ‘Poplar’, for the same reason, refers to Mao’s own first wife Yang Kaihui (杨开慧), who died in 1930 and had been close friends with Li. In Reply to Li Shuyi, Mao imagines their dead spouses as having ascended to the heavens, where they will live in peace with the moon goddess Chang’E.

Sisyphean

Welcome back to you, etymology enthusiasts! Here we are for another episode of An Assemblage of Grandiose and Bombastic Grandiloquents. We’re hoping today’s word has no place as an adjective in your life right now, for today’s word is: Sisyphean. 

Sisyphean is a term meaning, laborious, endless and futile. As in, ‘man, digging this hole to China in my backyard sure is Sisyphean!’ This word has a rather detailed origin; it comes from Greek mythology’s legendary King Sisyphus, who was condemned for his craftiness and deceit and therefore punished with the task of perpetually rolling a huge stone to the top of the hill, only to have it roll back each time he neared his goal. Sounds fun, right?

Sisyphus was the King of Ephyra, or as it would later be known, Corinth. His name actually means ‘crafty’ in Greek, and was rather apt, as Sisyphus was a sly ruler, who cheated Death, or in Greek, ‘Thanatos’, in his own chains the first time he was sentenced to death. Later, after Sisyphus’ eventual passing, Zeus bestowed the cruel and endless punishment upon him for his cunning wit, and the belief that Sisyphus was more clever than Zeus himself. Zeus enchanted the boulder so that it would roll away each time Sisyphus neared the top, thus entrapping him in an eternity of effortful labour and frustration. 

And so, we are left with the wonderful adjective ‘Sisphyean’, sometimes capitalised, to describe any venture that is both laborious and futile. The word found its way into the English language in the late 16th/early 17th century, but surprisingly, has grown steadily in popularity since the 1950s, perhaps indicating the number of Sisyphean tasks that occur in our modern world? I suppose it's not for me to say.

Comparable characters with similar Sisyphean tasks include Naranath Bhranthan, an Indian folklore character who was considered to be a divine person, but mad, and whose activity consisted of rolling a big stone up a hill and then letting it fall back down, and Wu Gang, who is known for endlessly cutting down a self-healing osmanthus tree on the moon. Poor Sisphyean fools.

As beer names go, Wu Gang Chops The Tree has to be one of the… more unique, shall we say? Apparently it comes from a Chinese legend. Wu Gang gets in trouble – exactly how seems to change with each version of the legend – and is banished to the moon where he must chop down a tree. The trouble is the tree keeps on healing itself, so he’s stuck there forever chopping away. I bet he follows Sisyphus…
