Bagrah could be a great, fascinating character if Leigh Bardugo didn't try so hard to victimize her and portray her as some sort of hero... Seriously wtf ? The narration in relation to Bagrah always made me cringe. In another version of events, I would have liked a less ignorant Alina to tell her the truth about being a bad teacher, a bad mother (now I want a fanfiction where Alina defends Aleksander of Bagrah) and just a bad person.
⚠️TW: Suicide mention at some point⚠️
Bestie, you just decided to touch one of the most problematic things in that universe. The matter of "We consider toxic, problematic women innocent and heroic".
Just like Baghra, just like Ana Kuya. A world where if you're a woman and you're toxic, then you're okay!
My own feelings of Baghra is that I just can't help but find her interesting. I can't help but wanna re-read her scenes sometimes. I don't like her but she's intriguing. There are times when I remember how fucked up her life was. Her father neglected her and her mother despised her. And then they abandoned her. Which makes me feel sorry for her. But then I remember how she had numerous kids from loveless matches and abandoned them all except one. Because this boy was special like her: immortal and powerful. She willingly condemned another human being to the pain and loneliness of immortality (and it's very possible that she condemned her other children to immortality as well, just like Ulla). She raised Aleksander with no displays of love, didn't allow him to form bonds with others and used emotional, verbal (and, very possibly, physical) abuse on him. Taught him how to be prideful, to abandon love, to value power. But when Aleksander became prideful and valued power, she turned her back on him. When he found a potential match on Alina, she took her away from him. Because Baghra always wanted him to depend on her for company and love. All these make me feel disgust for her.
But still Baghra was a product of the fucked up life Grisha had that made her value self-preservation, just like Aleksander was. The only difference is that Aleksander cared about the fate of their people.
And when Aleksander entrusted her with the training of his Grisha, she used violent means to teach them how to develop and control their powers. Even used their own phobias against them ffs.
And despite all this, we have the good guys not only remembering her fondly but also defend her:
This whole paragraph makes me sick.
Look, I naturally didn't expect the good gang remember the Darkling with love. No way that. But why on God's green earth do they make him seem like a lunatic with no feelings that was at fault for literally EVERYTHING?
“Did he love the girl he forced to commit those murders?”
Ah, yes, of course. Because if a person is a murderer then he's also incapable of feeling love. When you're a villain, you can't love. You can't have both. It's impossible, Aleksander! 😠🫵
“What about the girl he tossed into the old king's bed for his own purposes?”
Oh right. Because Aleksander gave Genya to the King not to the Queen's care. Jesus, I forgot that.
Oh yes! I also forgot how Genya decided to stay because she wanted to take revenge.
“then mutilated when she dared to challenge him”
Me if I was the editor of the book, saw that line and correcting it: "then punished when she dared to commit treason against him?"
Because isn't that what she did? She was his soldier and let the Sun Summoner escape. What do you think he would do to her? Give her a sympathetic pat on the shoulder and say: "I understand. She's your friend. Fuck Ravka."
“Or the woman he blinded for failing to offer him unswerving devotion?”
Didn't Baghra commit treason as well? Didn't she let the Sun Summoner go? Does Zoya realize that if the King had found out, he would behead Baghra on the spot?
Also why is she talking about him like he didn't regret what he did to his mother?
And am I the only one in this goddamn fandom that thinks that Baghra got away with it lightly?
So Zoya in a few words:
‘Who would speak for Liliyana, for Genya and Alina and Baghra if she did not?’
In other words Zoya: "I'm the LAWYER IN HERE!!"
Instead of wanting to feel love for the good characters and side with them, I want to slap them across the face. The amount of stupidity and arrogance they have is truly admirable. Congratulations for being douchebags, my friends!!👌👌
This duology has me like:
Instead of admitting that Baghra was problematic and made many serious mistakes (which I would much prefer to see from them) they're glorifying her. They're painting her as a frail, weak and innocent woman that did nothing wrong in her life. And being abusive is not against her! Of course not. Because she's a woman so we have to let her go of any charges and forgive her. ❤️
She was neither frail nor weak. She could easily use her powers if she could but Baghra loooved to play the victim. And she was definitely not innocent. She was one of the reasons Aleksander came out this way and contributed to his eventual downfall in R&R. Since her suicide made him lose his mind and become even more unhinged.
And, finally, yes I would have liked someone to tell her how shit of a mother she was to her son and how she sucks in general. But I don't think it would mind her much. She would be apathetic and sarcastic.

in a world filled with books written by male authors that make me go "uhhhhh this writer does Not have a good outlook on masculinity and women, this was definitely written by a man", the Chaos Walking trilogy stands as a complete opposite where I spent the entire series being like "WOW I never really thought about masculinity in this way, WOW this is painting a really interesting picture of gender dynamics and generational relationships, this was definitely written by a man"

“queer spaces should be inclusive of people who don’t enjoy sex and who have “strange”, negative or repulsed relationships with sex” and “sex is an important aspect of lgbt community, history, and activism and queer people should be allowed and able to talk freely about sex without stigma or shame” are ideas that can and should coexist.

Yes, I would be very interested hearing your head canon (@tim-ribbert-56) (in response to this post)
I have decided for my personal entertainment that Clarisse de Cagliostro is related to Lupin III, and here's why.
-pulls out Arsène Lupin's Wikipedia page-
In the novel La Comtesse de Cagliostro, a young Arsène Lupin (at the time going by the name Raoul d'Andrésy) was courting Clarisse d'Etigues, a young lady of a well-to-do family, and trying to win her hand, despite her father's disapproval.
Throughout the course of the novel, Lupin meets and falls in love with Joséphine Balsamo, aka the Countess of Cagliostro, and abandons Clarisse in favour of her. To clarify, Joséphine is not actually countess of anything, she is (or claims to be) a descendant of Giuseppe Balsamo aka the Count of Cagliostro (who was also count of jack shit), a famous conman from the 18th century.
Shenanigans ensue, which I will not go into in details on, but oh my god I am insane about Raoul and Joséphine, I want to dissect them and study them under a microscope. It turns out Joséphine aka Cagliostro is evil as fuck, Raoul/Lupin realizes that and goes back to Clarisse (whom he had previously abandoned like an old sock, I fucking hate this guy), marries her, and a few years later has her kid.
Unfortunately Clarisse dies in childbirth, and Joséphine, who was still around and very very pissed at Lupin (and jealous as hell of Clarisse whom, may I mention, had never personally antagonized her in any way whatsoever, Joséphine is just fucking bonkers). Joséphine also kidnaps Lupin and Clarisse's son, Jean, and raises him as her own son. (I have not yet read the following novel The revenge of Cagliostro so I don't really know what Jean's deal is, I just know he's an antagonist).
The following is my headcanon, based on these events. In the universe of Lupin III, Joséphine Balsamo was actually countess of the small kingdom of Cagliostro (maybe Giuseppe was count, maybe he conned his way into becoming count, maybe he bought the land and built a fake kingdom with a fake history, who knows).
After the events of The revenge of Cagliostro, Jean settles down in the country of Cagliostro, gets married, has a child, and that child will later have a daughter of their own, who they name Clarisse, after their late grandmother. Clarisse de Cagliostro, of Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro fame, would thus be the great-grand-daughter of Arsène Lupin, making her Lupin III's cousin/niece/whatever you call this specific degree of separation.
I am choosing to make Clarisse de Cagliostro a great-granddaughter of Arsène Lupin, rather than a granddaughter, because Arsène Lupin was very young when the events I described unfolded: he is 20 years old when he meets Clarisse d'Etigues and the whole Cagliostro debacle happens, and 25 by the time Jean is born. I'm assuming he had Lupin II much later in his life. So Jean and Lupin II (half-brothers) would have a significant difference in age, and so Jean's hypothetical child (grandchild of Arsène Lupin, so of the same generation of Lupin III) would be much older than Lupin III. Clarisse de Cagliostro is younger than him, maybe around the same age if you stretch it, so she's have to be a great-grandchild.
Now I need to read The revenge of Cagliostro and study Arsène Lupin's wikipedia page in more detail to determine when exactly Lupin II was born and who his mother was. And also where Albert's family branched out, because the fact that he's called D'Andrésy should theoretically place him as a descendant of Arsène Lupin's mother but not of Arsène Lupin himself; but Jean was also going by that last name, so who fucking knows.
No I am not insane I promise, I am just a gigantic nerd.

TERFs in my notifs arguing that men don't suffer any type of disparity while society as a whole still disparages men from:
- custody cases favoring women more than men and there are some instances the mother is actually an awful parent
- men being conditioned not to express themselves to the point that they don't seek help for depression and mental illness.
- on the same topic, men as a whole are more likely to commit suicide
- men who survive rape, CSA, or sexual assault are less likely to report it than women because of stigma.
- men are shamed if they take jobs that are traditionally held by women, like teachers and nurses.
And, of course, the disproportionate amount of black men in prison.
But yes, please do continue to tell everyone how men can't experience any type of disparity and how it's only cis white women.
Protip: feminism also includes freeing men from toxic masculinity and racism, not just women. If your "feminism" only extends to only women and doesn't acknowledge these situations, then you're not much of a feminist.
But what can you expect from TERFs? They're so self-obsessed and self-centered.
Also.

my favourite irony of the current shipping discussion is the folks who allege WolfWren enjoyers sent “threats” to people who enjoy cishet ships (I have asked for ANY examples or usernames of anyone doing this multiple times), have also been calling for Filoni to suffer & die if he doesn’t make their ship canon. but don’t forget, it’s definitely the sapphics and queers who like WolfWren that are the problem

People have argued about league vs dota way too much when they’re honestly both fun mobas in their own right. But I heavily favor league of legends for one reason: the ratio of female characters to male characters in league of legends is roughly 2:3 which isn’t good, but in dota it’s an abysmal 1:5. If you want to play a female character in league you have at least one option for every role and most character archetypes, if you want to play a female character in dota your options are limited to scantily clad mages, scantily clad marksmen, scantily clad supports or one of two woman in armor who fight melee (1 of which was released only like 1 year ago). Not to say that league of legends is respectful to women, hell some of its designs are arguably far worse in terms of over sexualization than dota, but the key factor here is that THERE ARE ACTUALLY PLAYABLE WOMEN IN LEAGUE

I will never forgive the gross mischaracterization of Daenerys as a heartless girlboss when all Dany has ever really wanted for herself is a home and a family of her own. She is driven by love, not power, and she wants to be queen because she wants to be able to protect people the way she herself was never protected.
And she wants to be queen of the seven kingdoms *specifically* because she has been told all her life that the smallfolk were waiting for the Targaryens to return and "save" them, and even if she doesn't wholly believe the grandiosity of those claims, all she's heard of Westeros in the past few years is how it's been riddled with war and famine and other horrible things, and it's her duty as someone with the power to potentially put a stop to all of that to do so.
She doesn't care about power, but she recognizes the power she does have, and she thinks it's wrong for people with that power to sit by and do nothing while there are innocents dying. Her "entitlement" to the throne does not come from any sort of Targaryen pride, it stems from her belief that she MUST take the throne in order to do more good, that if she does, she can fix her "home".

a comprehensive chronological list of every heart effie trinket has broken.
and the respective song lyrics that could have been written about her, because effie trinket is someone you write breakup songs about.
do me a favor and ask if you need some help / she said, "do me a favor, and stop flattering yourself" / and to tear apart the ties that bind / perhaps "fuck off" might be too kind /
she's nineteen when she leaves marlin lowrock. he tries to change the way she dresses and the way she speaks. he doesn't like how loud her laughter booms across the room. he doesn't like that she walks with a pep in her step. he doesn't like her. she throws a punch on her way out of his life and holds her face immaculately still even as pain shoots up her knuckles (she broke one, her finger is still crooked). his nose bleeds. this is the one where she learns not to settle.
but i'm a creep / i'm a weirdo / what the hell am i doing here? / i don't belong here / she's running out the door /
she's twenty when she leaves caesar flickerman. it's not so much as a leaving, really, as it is never walking into anything. she goes on precisely two dates with him. it's only to please her parents, he's from an influential family and it'd be nice, they say, if the kids dated. she holds back her grimaces whenever he laughs over the dinner table and she only agrees to a second one because she enjoys torturing herself, it seems. she leaves after thirty minutes of the second date, excuses herself and never answers his attempts to contact her again. this is the one she's most embarrassed by.
i won't cover my scars, i'll let them bleed / so my silence, so my silence / won't be mistaken for peace / am i wrong for wanting us to make it? / tell me your lies because i just can't face it /
she's twenty-five when she leaves cypress lockhart. he is the perfect man and she is the imperfect bride-to-not-be. her grin is wide and filled with panic any time someone makes a funny little remark about the lack of a shiny ring on her finger. he kneels to the ground on a hot summer night and dread fills up her throat until all that comes out is a choked sound. he knows the answer as soon as he asks it. she has known it from the moment they started dating. she is not a bride, she is something else, something in-between, something that aches and longs for things she has never known. this is the problem, she has dreamed of a luxurious wedding, she has yearned for the sound pattern of little feet running all over her house, she has wanted a marriage and a family, but not with him. effie trinket seems to be searching for an impossible thing. everyone says she must be mad to turn him down. his mother's ring is pocketed again and she pretends to feel guilty. he runs a quiet smear campaign on her for years. this is the one that people still whisper about.
got a girl with california eyes / and i thought that she could really be the one this time / but i never got the chance to make her mine /
she's twenty-seven when she leaves osage blossom. a young stylist born on district four that made it to the capitol to work, not a dime to her name and a bag heavy on her shoulders. effie adores her. her parents don't approve of their daughter dating a nobody. months later, after some suspicious rebellious acitivity, osage is found dead at her apartment. this is the one where effie's heart breaks too.
god dammit amy, we're not kids anymore / you can't just keep waltzing out of my life, leaving clothes on my bedroom floor, / [...] / you should mean more to me by now than just heartbreak and a short skirt /
she's twenty-eight when she leaves glinte wellbrand. the end of her twenties have come on too fast and too slow all the same. effie finds herself a wild animal, an awful thing; she clings to her tall stone walls and shoots daggers at anyone close enough to see. for once she doesn't want to be seen, heard, understood. for once, the ground could swallow her up. glinte is a welcome distraction, a thoughtless call in the middle of every lonely night. they don't want anything more than casual, either, but they're also fed up with her antics after months of it. she's too much, they say. they exist under each other's skins like poison. their argument ends with a broken bottle and a hole on the wall. this is the one she doesn't talk about much.
you got big plans and you gotta move / and i don't feel nothing at all / and you can't feel nothing small / honey, i love you, that's all she wrote / oh, ophelia / you've been on my mind, girl, like a drug /
she's thirty-one when she leaves saffran farshire. they don't see eye to eye anymore, and she's learned to jump back in the water before it all sinks. there isn't much to write home about. he wants to keep trying, but she insists against it. the cold night mocks her emptiness when she walks out of their place, bound to let her own loneliness hold her to sleep for the next however many years. although admittedly such a crier, she doesn't shed any tears. there's a hollow in her chest that fills up eventually with her career, her friends, her team. this is just the one that happened last.

I saw a tiktok talking about the massive shortage of feminine hygiene products in Gaza.
The only charity right now that seems to be helping with this shortage is called Motherbeing
Motherbeing is an organization based on education and providing assistance in healthcare for Arab women.
They recently donated 200,000 sanitary pads as women have been taking dangerous measures to delay their periods out of fear of toxic shock syndrome.
In case you are unaware, toxic shock syndrome is a possibly life threatening infection that develops from wearing a feminine hygiene product, usually tampons or cups, for too long.
They currently don’t have donations open, but people are trying to get them to. There’s products you can buy from their website, however.
This will get like three notes, but I just came across it and I wanted to post something. When something as serious as genocide happens, people forget little things like pads and tampons, which actually can be life threatening.
If you want to donate to charities similar to this one, here’s a few I found:
-Helping Women Period: provides pads and tampons to women (and people with uteruses) who are low income or homeless.
-The Pad Project: supplies low income women with pads all over the world.
-She Supply: provides pads and tampons for homeless women in Texas
-Free the Tampon: organization working towards making sanitary products free
-The Period Panty Project: takes physical donations of sanitary products as well as just donations for women in Ohio.
-Days for Girls: donated reusable pads to women all over the world.
There’s a lot more. Feel free to research
