carmy telling sydney that she loves taking care of people is SO specific and exacting coming from him bc carmy hasn’t really experienced or allowed himself care... yet he recognizes that ability and characteristic so astutely in sydney.
that line is a callback to what nat says to him last season about chef’s liking to take care of people through their creativity, their gifts, their food. which is one of the reasons carmy gravitates toward food.
that’s one of the ONLY times he felt connected to and cared for within his highly dysfunctional and fractured family. THRU their likeness with and for food.
every other time he cared within his family, it was thrown in his face, he didn’t do it right or he was punished for trying.
part of him recognizing sydney’s brilliance and capability is absolutely about her skill and the food but it’s also about her ability to CARE about all of these things above and beyond the food as well.
something carmy really struggles with. like the accolades, the stars, certain details of the business. he can’t care bc care is such a tenuous and foreign concept to him on so many levels.
some people took noticeable (and justifiable) issue with all that he saddles sydney with both last season, and moreso, this season.
but without delving too much into the unjust and imbalanced distribution of labor on a black woman, which has valid and necessary critique, part of the reason carmy feels so comfortable and trusting in allowing sydney to do so many things is because he feels secure in her care and the expressions of it.
not for him specifically or directly, but for all the things that are required in their business. and even all that is required as a human as well.
he knows that her care extends beyond the food and the nourishment and the fulfillment of a meal.
and i think he does this almost unconsciously because he still wanted final say and approval on things. that’s his limited need for control and to know the working facets of a thing in order to feel certain it won’t implode.
but the CARE. that is something he sees in her. it’s something he’s lacked in a broader sense for most of his life. that care from another, directed back.
carmy desperately wants to feel and experience care. but he can’t. he keeps it at arm’s length, he self sabotages from it.
this also speaks to how we don’t ever even see HIM experience this basic care via a meal. like this guy is a chef, he’s surrounded by chefs and owns a restaurant yet he eats pb&js and poptarts?? cannot experience or allow himself care.
i think his simple acknowledgement and vocal proclamation of sydney’s care and heart is so special and impacting bc that’s what he needs. that’s what he desperately craves. but he has no real concept of it. he’s tried to display it so much throughout his life in his family but the remnants and byproducts have wounded him so severely.
so even in the way he expresses care there is an inconsistency or a haphazardness.
which is also why him telling her earlier in this season: “you’re gonna have to care about everything, more than anything” is actually just a projection. because sydney doesn’t have a lack of perception and understanding and dynamic with care. HE does!
sydney has experienced care on additional levels he hasn’t had access to. sydney has been loved. even if primarily in a familial, parental way. that is a foundation for so MUCH when it comes to the capacity of care and nurture. both giving and receiving it.
this is also why he seems so visually fixated on her sometimes. he’s trying to gauge and learn her but also figure out how he can care for and about her (while also keeping her at an arm’s length and protecting himself) because someone like her is literally BRAND new to him.
this is why he can’t handle her being upset or peeved at him.
this why he called in the favor he did for something he KNEW she would care about wearing.
WHY HE LITERALLY TRIES TO GIVE HER WHAT SHE WANTS NEARLY ALWAYS.
he witnesses her capacity for care continuously displayed and feels his own opening up toward and for her.

for @mellowtheoristpainter. answering here because price brain go brrr
notes: this is only about reboot!price. i'm not super knowledgeable about the military. this is 100% my opinion. would love to hear other's thoughts. and, some of this is conjecture because we just don't know enough about price.
this recent post of mine is an intro on my thoughts re:price: posty post. cap price is my favorite cod man and a complicated character. he's an insidious motherfucker.
i think to expand upon it, i want to talk about price and gaz specifically.
in the post you're referring to, i also use the tag #he's all business all about the mission. 'old comrades' in mw 2019 is a good illustration that shows how far price is willing to go to accomplish a mission. he'll use whatever means he has to to achieve it and in that case, it's the butcher's wife and child - 'truth serum'. price even makes a comment (i don't have the transcript in front of me) that boils down to "the butcher has no problem hurting children" - a callback to the embassy mission, where early on, we see a child run from the butcher and is presumably shot and killed (the death is hidden by smoke iirc). now i don't think price had intentions to kill the butcher's family, but something tells me it's not the first time he's used the 'truth serum' tactic.
i won't get into the full gloves off speech in mw 2019, but i AM looking forward to seeing how it continues in the franchise. see here for a scrap of what i'd like to see in future games: posty post
also, tats (@stuffireadandenjoy) added great commentary to that post about the embassy line.
when we first meet price in the reboot, it's at piccadilly, where he throws a man with a bomb locked to his chest over a railing to save the lives of other hostages. ngl when i play, i feel awful, but i still rationalize it. not getting into a philosophical debate on morality here, but the scene's upsetting. it's supposed to be upsetting. the entire franchise is upsetting.
but that's not the only interesting thing about that mission to me. gaz tries and fails to open the locked suicide vest. price makes the decision for gaz. gaz, even though there's only ~5 secs left on the timer, insists he can get it. price doesn't just outrank him - he's older and more experienced. price shoves gaz away, pitches the guy over the balcony, thus saving the rest of the hostages. again we can see where this was a good decision despite it being an awful one. it establishes john price as a character that can 'rise above' to make the hard choices.
gaz is a great character, hands down, love the man. (also a war criminal. anyway.) but i think he's especially interesting in these interactions with price. we see this young sergeant, fairly early career (compared to price), who is frustrated by the limitations and red tape of his job. joins price when price validates his anger post-piccadilly. gaz was probably like "fucking finally someone higher up who gets it". the way price looks at him in that scene too -- the man is listening. observing. he sees someone he can bring under his wing and help shape him. there is a reason he recruits gaz for tf 141. i think price sees gaz as a protege/successor.
ok this is getting long so here's an unceremonious wrap-up: in conclusion, price has had to make fucked up choices in pursuit of The Mission™. some he doesn't want to make (see: mwiii, i blame shepherd for EVERYTHING) and some he seems to have no problems making (piccadilly, using 'truth serum'). he learned at some point in his career he can take the gloves off and get dirty because what matters is mission success. the end justifies the means.
i haven't even touched on the military propaganda of it all, either. but smarter and hotter people than i have done that on this site.
unfortunately, i am still riddled with a disease called priceaholicism.
if you read this far and don't hate me, thank you! 🫶

Can't send asks from my sideblog, but this is @chewing-the-drywall
I feel like much of s2 fell into Frenchie's "we put it in the box and then lock it and don't open it again" in the sense that it set up A LOT that I was intrigued about how they would address it, but it either never was mentioned again or was handled poorly.
Examples range from light, like how I wish we saw more of the crew interacting with each other in ways that built on their characters from S1, where in S2 they didn't feel any more developed, or even regressed. (Example, Fang used the word Fingies 2-3 times through S2, and it felt like they were using it almost as a shorthand for his character, rather than making him feel more real and multidimensional as a character.)
100% @chewing-the-drywall. When I first heard that line I had I was so excited for the story to prove Frenchie wrong. Or show how important it can be to put aside problems to stay alive in the moment. But in the end, this one line summarized how the season handled everyone, besides Stede and Ed. Below, is an in depth discussion on where this season decided to spend it's limited amount of time. Instead of focusing on the characters and plotlines they'd already established.
This season had so MANY ideas it wanted to touch on.
Izzy trying to deal with his unrequited love and opening up to a new way of living. The traumatized 'Revenge' crew trying to adapt to a softer way of life again. The abandoned crew learning how to help their traumatized friends. Introducing new characters like Zheng, Auntie, and Archie into our main group. Setting up a conflict to resolve in season three. Along the way, referencing Pirates of history like Ned Low, Mary Reed, and Anne Bonny.
Notice, I've said all this and we're not even at our romantic leads.
Which is fine. Stories are fluid things. As long as the story knows how to flow from our leads to our side characters. Which leads us to how I feel this show took a lot of time away from establishing our central crew-
[Warning- this will be a controversial opinion- I want to know what y'all think about this] Zheng/Oluwande. This seasons habit of retreading old plotlines and referencing scenes from S1.
What S1 did so well was paralleling the side stories with what was going on with Ed/Stede. Usually, highlighting how well Stede/Ed worked by showing how much Ed/Izzy DIDN'T work. Or general hijinks that tied into the plot (Oluwande and Frenchie on the French ship).
Season 2 chose to parallel our main story with what was going on between Zheng/Oluwande as a budding romance and Izzy's slow recovery. The reason Zheng/Oluwande scenes felt like a waste for me in that the story was JUST a retelling the story we watched from S1.
A frustrated first mate(Auntie), and a legendary captain(Zheng) fighting over the captain falling in love with an idiot(Olu). In season 2, much like every callback for me, it felt like it slowed down the plot by pulling us out of the story. Like...yeah, you did the thing again, do you want me to applaud you for it?
I LIKE Zheng and Oluwande as a couple! I like that Oluwande was debating leaving Stede and taking Jim and Archie with him. But at the same time, I didn't care about Zheng until episode 7 when she beat up Stede, showing that yes. She's not just some all powerful woman taken down by a mix of love(the crew in ep3) and thinking that she was above it all (ep 7). She's fast on her feet, smart, and willing to stab someone who gets in her way. She's her own person. But.
Every other scene that established her was about her romance, felt like we could have put Rhys and Taika in there. It didn't feel...unique. It's as if the show only knows 1 way to write a romance between a badass and a bumbling idiot. Again. Oluwande in season 1 wasn't dumb in the same way everyone else was. He was protective of Jim, a bit nervous overall, but he was the person the crew chose to lead them. The season just dumbed everyone down a bit and called it a day.
This comes to the larger issue. When we only have eight episodes I don't want to rewatch the exact same plot beats with different characters. Time spent here ends up taking away from other stories we could have told about trauma and growing as a family and other forms of growing as a family. We didn't need another romance plot line. Imagine taking this time instead to show Lucius reaching out to Pete AND the crew for help. Or Frenchie finally feeling safe enough to play his lute. Or Roach helping Fang get over his thing with cakes-you get my point.
The fact we took all the found family stuff from season one, and pushed it onto only Izzy in S2 means when he dies, all the found family shit falls away. His death makes us realize we've been ignoring the central family we were supposed to care about. Because in so many words, their trauma was ignored.
[I even theorize if Izzy was alive and sailed away with them. Showing how he was taken in and loved by his crew, the ending wouldn't feel so hollow. This crew doesn't feel like a caring family. The person who protected them for months died, wasn't mourned, and then they threw a wedding the same day. Not even a full day to mourn. The 'New Revenge' feels like a heartless crew of characters we barely recognize because they aren't a family like they were at the end of S1. More like coworkers who sometimes fall in love with eachother.]
Trauma, Timelines, and Tonal issues when jumping from Episodes 1-3 to Episodes 4-5.
When the crews meet up, the story chooses to focus on the fun plot. Ed and Stede recovering their relationship, only dipping back into that serious tone when Izzy or Lucius come on screen to 'make things sad' again. I don't think the transition from 'serious' to 'comedy' was handled well.
I don't have an official timeline of the events of season two. But from what I remember, everything happens within 2 weeks.
In episode 4, Stede ignored the vote of his crew- to let the man who was torturing half his 'FAMILY' for at least 80 days- back aboard. This rubbed me the wrong way, as it showed Stede being a selfish prick in a way that could seriously harm his crew. That's when I started to see how not adding a *single* time-skip mid-season would hurt S2.
Imagine if we had a one-week off-screen time skip between episodes 4 and 5.
Maybe it's implied that they stay in that town for a bit. Izzy would a bit more time to learn to move on his new leg and start to open up to those he already trusts. Include a scene of Izzy WITH the crew, maybe laughing about something with the old traumatized crew, even if it's just a 30-second opener. Imply that the traumatized crew would have more time to settle in with the family they miss. Show that yeah, the traumatized crew needs more time to heal. Imply at the start of the 'Ed apology' that Ed and Stede have had more time to talk their issues out.
THEN have Ed apologize. You can even keep the bullshit corporate to show that Ed still has to work for this.
Healing takes time. Setting a series over the span of two weeks after half your cast was tortured by your lead love interest? After five of your main crew thought they would sail off into a storm and die after months of stress and life threatening battles? Why did that shit get shoved to the side so quickly?
Framing episode 5 as the START of Ed making amends with the crew, only to drop the plot by episode 7? Not a smart move. Because let's be honest, 'poison into positivity' in episode 6, referring to the fact that they sold all of Ed's loot to pay for the party, ignores the sacrifices the crew made to live that long. (The death of Ivan, and intense trauma they all need to work through). In a way, Ed throwing this party was him asking the crew to start putting everything away in that imaginary box.
It's Ed retroactively letting himself say 'hey, that time I spent torturing my captives was worth it because we got something good out of it' while still ignoring his own guilt. Ed needed to take accountability for his actions. No more 'I took 'a' mans leg' bullshit. The reason his arc feels so unsatisfying is that the plot easily forgives him. Fuck. I hate what they did for Ed's arc, but that's not the point.
Overall.
My issue with this season is not that it chose to do these topics, it's that it didn't think about the implications of what they were bringing up. It didn't dare to think 'maybe it's fucked if we quickly brush off a trauma like this'. Again. I know we have to blame MAX for cutting off two episodes. But I don't think 2 additional episodes would fix a tone problem seen going from episodes 3-4.
Fucking hell. Each member of the revenge had the potential for their own arc, so it's baffling to see them all reduced to 'well meaning idiot' when they all felt so fleshed out in S1.
When izzy gives his speech about belonging, there's a reason the only image in the show of the crew all together was from S1.
At the end of the day, Season 2 didn't let our surviving side characters grow. This is a mean spirited bit on how I feel the writers see the their own characters.
Stede and Ed are our leads. They won't die, not in this genera. Their shitty actions will be forgiven because it's a comedy, and as long as it's joked about, it holds no weight. They won't die. They won't get fatally hurt. Their trauma will be taken seriously, but it's a 50/50 on if they'll talk about it before breaking up again. They will eventually get a happy ending, their trauma looked at head on, because duh.
Jim, Olu, Lucius, Pete? Characters who used to have defined personalities in S1, but haven't been defined much beyond their relationships with their partners? Whose trauma might be mentioned, but will quickly be 'resolved' in one scene? Shame. Seems like they're only useful as set dressing, But we might make you useful as interchangeable side characters to riff against. Oh, and you're in love! Isn't that cool!
Izzy? I'll just quote Jenkins here. "To have him become a father figure to Blackbeard, and on some level to the rest of the crew, and to see him become the heart of why we’re giving pirates the chance to stand for being able to live how you choose. In reality, they’re thieves and criminals, but what our pirates stand for is a life of belonging to something larger than they are in the face of a crushing, slightly fascist normalcy." So...Is Izzy a pirate and accepted into the Revenge family? Or is he still an outsider? Jenkins gave us a romcom but still defines Izzy's character as that of one stuck in a drama/tragedy. Point and laugh, because tonally these two things clash HARD and will make an audience lose trust in it's writers unless well established. Leading us to the entire issue we've pointed out of not letting your characters actions hold in dramatic weight in your story.
Frenchie, Wee John, Roach, and Fang- Ah. No love interests again...shit. Well. Background actors it is... for now. We'll see. But we need 2 more scenes of the couple breaking up, so MAYBE you'll get some backstory hinted at in dialogue. You all have 1 thing your good at, so that's easy enough to put you where you belong.
Buttons and Swede? Well. They're still alive!! Don't be sad, fans :) The actors just couldn't show up anymore. We don't want our silly happy queer pirate rom com to not end on a happy ending! (Closes the lid of the trash can where they're keep Con O'Neill a bit tighter, thanking God Con was silenced by a strike this entire season from social media)
Do you agree, or disagree? Leave any lingering thoughts down below!
I'd love to chat down below.

Finally watched the last two episodes of Shōgun! Heartbreaking, of course. We drank a toast to Toda Mariko between episodes 9 and 10, in a matcha latte for me and saké for the other three watchers. I was delighted that some final-chapter items from the books I'd been hoping for were in the last episode. Very gratifying.
Thank you for being open to chat about this show! And as supporting proof we were robbed not having Midori in the show, here's Omi introducing his wife to the Shōgun book narrative:
Omi thought about his wife Midori and his heart leapt. She was so beautiful and fine and gentle and clever, her voice so clear, and her music as good as that of any courtesan in Izu...
Glad you finally got a chance to watch the last two episodes, which truly were phenomenal. The last one really caught me by surprise, but I actually think it was far better than the more predictable version I had expected to see. I feel like the whole thing definitely merits a rewatch now that I've realized there are all these little callbacks to things that were in the first half of the show (like “drawing a line”!). And of course, it's definitely time to start reading the book... (But wait, if Omi's so enthralled with his wife, is his relationship with Kiku not as important as the one they share in the show? Or is there more of a triangle thing going on? Regardless, I'm sure I'll find out!)
Thank you for indulging me as a I rambled about the show! I love it when television shows are this smartly written, plotted, and acted, and it's been great fun to get to think through some of the more complicated aspects of Shōgun (or just make lists of which of the men I think are hottest). And as much as a second season really would be cool (who would really say no to watching Hiroyuki Sanada gaze enigmatically over a horizon for another ten episodes?), I'm more than satisfied with the jewel of a limited series we got.

Watching and Dreaming thoughts.
Well, gang... here we are, at our final episode. It's been a long adventure, but we have arrived at the end.
I love how Luz figured out it was all a dream. A singular line that Amity and her shared was so important to her that it was the immediate indicator.
After we see Eda and King's dreams, we finally see them together after so long:
Tumblr media
And yes, I had a huge grin on my face. It was so great to see all of them interact and bond, especially considering what comes later...but before that
Tumblr media
Eda and Raine reunion! And she gives him a ton of (well deserves) kisses. Even though we sadly don't get much more than this, I still highly appreciate it!
The collector eventually talks with the gang and I honestly really like their POV on death, and it makes a ton of sense considering he not only "broke" other people and put them back together, but they also watched Belos do the same thing to the previous Golden Guards.
This leads to them trying to explain to the collector their stories and such, eventually going into things such as Amity's redemption, which while nice...it led to this frame:
Tumblr media
Okay, but seriously, I admire how they kinda laughed at the suddenly redeemed villain trope and not only poked fun at it but made a lesson with it that changed the plot. Luz sacrificed herself and told him he did nothing wrong.
Oh yeah...
Luz died!
Yes, it was temporary but it still gave me this line:
Tumblr media
Which tears me up and also:
Tumblr media
HER MOTHER KNEW! Which made the moment even worse:
But then we not only get the "best of both things" papa titan (Voice by Arin hanson!) , but:
Tumblr media
Titan luz!
Everything from her powers to her design was incredible, including her final move, which is the best callback ever:
Tumblr media
Now eat this, sucka!
Okay, and now for the timeskip:
For one:
Huntlow, baby!
Tumblr media
We may not get much, but they are so adorable! Even when coming across Flapjack's grave. I was honestly a little worried they were going to revive him, but no, he lives inside Hunter now, And Waffles (the confirmed name of his new Palisman) keeps on his memory.
And now with Luz:
Tumblr media
She not only gets to go back and forth between realms, but she also gets to study there, not only in her university but also with King's new Glyphs!
And after all the fun we have, we get to see their amazing adult designs, some hints of Alador and Darius shipping, and a huge celebration for Luz. It's honestly the perfect finale that I could only have dreamed of, I may not be mentioning a lot due to both me forgetting and Tumblr's image limit but I'll be sure to do my best to make another post later, but for now: I would love to thank the owl house and it's crew for everything they brought to this, it not only helped me grow more comfortable with who I am, but give me a ton of hope for the future.
Who knows what cartoon I'm gonna be rambling about next, but until then, I hope you guys stick around and be sure to talk with me about thoughts of your own...and finally:

Skip and Loafer Episode 9 Part 1: Drowsy (and Peppy)
Tumblr media
Forget being a good episode or even a great one, this episode of Skip and Loafer was two great episodes in one. Divided into an A and B part that flow into one another seamlessly, but each address their own separate pieces, it's more than a treat to watch, it's an incredible example of storytelling within the frame of high school life.
⚠️Notice: This episode has been split into 2 posts because of length and image limits. This is the A Part post - Drowsy (and Peppy). The B Part post, subtitled (Drowsy and) Peppy, can be found on my blog if you haven't come across it yet.⚠️
Where do I even begin? The first half is dedicated to Mitsumi's longing for home and the comfort she feels in returning from Tokyo, but the second half examines how Mitsumi's changed since she originally came from her hometown, and how the people around her have changed and grown as well, while Shima remains under lock and key. It's just an incredible approach to the story that almost inserts a prologue with Mitsumi's return home so that it can prep viewers for the latter half of the content. It's tight, it picks all the right moments to focus on, and it never loses sight of what it wants to do. In short, it's beautiful.
It's so wonderful that I really don't want to organize my thoughts on it, but at some point or another I really have to get down to it if I want to say anything worthwhile, but I'll let Shima speak the first words.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He said the thing! He said the starting lines to the opening song, and I think that's so incredibly cute. Whether or not the pair really realize what they feel for each other is inconsequential, because their words and actions speak so incredibly loud it's wonderful. Also also, Mitsumi's dress in the opening? It's a simplified version of the dress she wears in today's cold open.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Side note, in the actual JP dialogue he says 'zutto mabukushite', it's just that in translating it to English they add a subject to his sentence. Because of that, it's far closer to the lyrics for the OP, which just use 'mabukushite'. So yeah, incredibly cute call back(s) that has me super giddy about it.
Anyways, back to the topic at hand, starting from the beginning. This episode adds (or really removes) a very unique piece to it: the soundtrack. It's substituted for really incredible sound design that does its best to capture the environment as candidly and as detailed as possible, and because of that the soundtrack doesn't exist. The first music you hear in the episode comes from the opening song, as we follow a cold open of Mitsumi making her way back home. Hell, we don't even hear Mitsumi talk in this sequence. Such a bold approach but it pays off in droves.
Which I love by the way, it sets the tone for the first half incredibly well in speaking to the themes of "memories" and nostalgia. We're not shown the whole ordeal in detail, but rather in bits and pieces that are pasted together one after the other, like a collage being plucked from Mitsumi's mind. Also, it sets up a really cool callback/comparison later in the episode.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's quite the adventurous approach, but I absolutely adore how it speaks to Mitsumi's character. How reserved and quiet she is by herself, and that that energy she has comes from the people that are around her. Also, I really like this little piece showing the "flight" starting and stopping via the seatbelt signs. Another really benign piece of direction but it adds a palpable sense of creativity and passivity in Mitsumi's journey back home.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
God I could go on forever about this. About how the view of the cityscape transitions into looking out over the clouds as Mitsumi's mind wanders through the experience, before switching once more into the lush and green terrain beneath her as she heads to her hometown. Or about how of all the scenes/sequences in this cold open, the longest one is Mitsumi staring out excitedly at the scenery when she lands back near her hometown. It's telling a story through Mitsumi's memories and I'm so completely in love with it. What I love most about this last bit though is that we don't see the scenery through Mitsumi's eyes for it. We see her reaction to it, but we're missing the first person perspective that the cold open flirts with through scenes like her flight.
Tumblr media
After the opening however, Skip and Loafer gets back to its core as it resets the vibe with a fun little joke from Mitsumi. Also, it's the first scene to make use of the OST, and it's for comedy's sake. I'll get it out the way now, but mild spoiler, the comedy is the only place the OST is really used this episode. There's bits and pieces through the A part, but the vast majority is only supplemented by stellar sound design.
Tumblr media
Also, you would have guessed it from earlier in the episode, but space and scale are really played up through this A part, and I do quite enjoy it. It takes simple and almost filler scenes and creates something more unique and stylized to better fit the episode. Also, faceless characters appear quite frequently through this A part which I found interesting.
Tumblr media
Similarly, I love how P.A Works and Deai have been using obstructions and depth in their environments. It's a really simple piece, but like I've said before, it adds awareness to the world that exists outside of frame and focus for viewers. It gives you context clues like, "hey, the camera's in a hallway right now isn't it? I guess they're in a room off the main entry", and things like that, and does it while providing really appealing pieces that can help narrow your focus in the scene.
Tumblr media
They use a similar approach in the environments as well. They provide something that's lived in, that characters exist and thrive in outside of what they're presented as or used for. Just take a look at these two images. The first is a super simple pieces for sure, but the use of a small stool/seat on wheels really speaks to the grandmother's involvement in the garden. Similarly, the watering can helps with that as well, plus the flowers in the background.
Now the second image is the piece that I really love because its a totally unnecessary piece, but I appreciate it an incredible amount. The tree's been trimmed! You can see where limbs have been cut off and new growth is beginning on the tree. What a completely benign piece to the art, but such a creative and impactful addition nonetheless. Absolutely love the detail and effort placed in this sort of stuff.
And lastly, I love how they render shadows and light in this scene, breaking up the light through the leaves of the tree just creates such a satisfying pattern and texture to the environment.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Moving forward once more, I really do like the use of montages/slideshows in this episode through that theme of memories. It's able to present so many pieces and stories that we wouldn't get to see otherwise.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Okay okay, speeding things up, Mitsumi and Fumi. I love how cute and wholesome their friendship is, and I love how they use that first person perspective again to drive home the incredibly strong emotional bond that the pair share.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Okay I said to speed things up but I can't, I love seeing the nervous emotions creep across Fumi's face before she tells Mitsumi about her boyfriend. It's so incredibly cute and well done.
Tumblr media
Also, P.A Work's favorite thing, shadows and reflections! Love the detail in the water as the pair cross over the bridge.
Tumblr media
Okay okay okay, the last piece I promise, I just absolutely love this scene and what it personifies.
So what is it, really? It's Mitsumi's nostalgia. Being at home, eating watermelon while her mom does the dishes and the cicadas chirp outside. That feeling of comfort as the wind blows gently, coaxing the slightest sounds out of the wind chimes. Remembering all of those places you've been, and that you want to visit again. Mitsumi eating that watermelon, seeing her mother, hearing those sounds, they brought back all those memories of the past for her. It's so, so incredibly beautiful and speaks so loud to the feelings of home. That no matter how far away you may travel, it's still there waiting for you.
Also, callback time! I had said it earlier and this is what it's for. It's a pretty cut and dry comparison of Mitsumi's life in Tokyo vs her hometown, really. Though you might be able to stretch it and talk about the differences in colors, as Tokyo's blue while her hometown is so bright and colorful by comparison. But at the end of the day, it just speaks to the two experiences Mitsumi has between her homes. How in Tokyo she has to get up bright and early to make the train to get to the airport in time, while in her hometown she's able to wake up nice and late and laze around eating watermelon. The city versus the country bumpkin, and I think it's a really sweet little touch to the episode.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
At the end of it all, this was an incredible stretch of episode content. Start to finish, just so well polished and approached that I could gawk at the whole part for days and still find more and more pieces to pick out and even more words to describe it with. But, you don't need all that to really get the emotion across. This first half is Mitsumi's memories, her fondness of returning home after a long time away, of melting back into the comfort of her family and hometown friends, and the nostalgia that comes with retracing the steps of her youth. Just beautiful stuff.
Now unfortunately, I've hit my image limit for a single post, so I will be following up with a B part for those interested in the latter half of the episode where Mitsumi returns to school in Tokyo.
If you're looking for the second part, here's a link to it for you!

Proposing V for the ask game, if you're still doing it?
My favorite thing about V:
On a narrative level, he represents the best quality of DMC5, it's fleshing out of Vergil. I love that deep down, underneath the fear-driven quest for power, Vergil is a soft goth boy who loves a particular poet so much he makes it his whole personality. Plus, I love the interpretation that he looks so young because Vergil lost so much of his life to being Nelo Angelo.
On a gameplay level, I love how you can make V constantly taunt while making his minions fight.
My least favorite thing about V:
On a narrative level, as much as I love his voice and design, it would have been so cool if he was a woman instead. Besides the Implications, it would be a neat way of nodding to his human mother. Also, I've been told that the literary character that Urizen is named after is a part of a dyad, the other half of which is a female deity. And DMC5 sorely fumbles it's female representation anyway, having a playable female character might have won it some points (though realistically, there's a good chance they would have fucked up her design, and the hate toward her playstyle would be so much more vitriolic).
Speaking of playstyle, on a gameplay level, I do enjoy playing as V, but the moveset definitely needs more development. I don't like that V's evasive actions require his familiars because you have to interrupt their combat (and even Griffon's attack charging) in order to use them, even though the whole point of V seems to be multitasking. Plus, the hidden range limit for the minions can really screw you, especially considering that Shadow's attacks can easily take it outside of that limit, causing it to teleport back to V's side and interrupt your attack strings. And what's sad is that due to unpopularity, there's a real chance that we won't get to see a new iteration of this playstyle.
(There's even a series in my pinned post all about a certain character ending up in this position, just saying).
My favorite line by V:
It's hard to say, since he has one of the best if not the best vocal performances in the game. I do like that he says "it's my turn to play with the Devil Sword" at one point.
My "brOTP" for V:
I love his friendship with Griffon. It's a shame it got no closure whatsoever because the writers decided they wanted to magically wipe away Vergil's trauma via DMC1 callback boss fight.
My "OTP" for V:
I don't generally like ships for Vergil, but one that I would entertain is one with Lucia. I see the humor in her meeting a man who's just as handsome as Dante but with none of the charm, and realizing she's actually fine with that. Plus, Vergil is far more comfortable with his demon side than his human side, and I think that would extend to Lucia. He would think her devil form is the most beautiful thing he's ever seen, and he'd be right. Lucia deserves a handsome loser boyfriend who loves the demon in her so much that she learns to love it too, especially since he also comes with a giant stoic tree man with sharp teeth and tentacles, and of course our favorite poetry-lover.
My "nOTP" for V:
Nero x V is sadly popular, even though they're literally father and son. And even when talking about just V, not Urizen or Vergil as a whole, I don't care for shipping him with Lady. She doesn't even fucking like him, nor should she.
A random headcanon about V:
I think his cane is tied to Rebellion in some way. Perhaps it simply contains some of the same materials, which is why it's good at conducting demonic power, and why it allowed him to reunite with Urizen.
An unpopular opinion about V:
While I am firmly in the "V and Vergil are the same character and that isn't a bad thing" camp, I am sympathetic to the wish that V was his own character. I cannot fault someone for loving V but not finding Vergil interesting, and I don't think it's worth getting mad at them over.
A song I associate with V:
Besides Crimson Cloud? There's a "combo mad" sort of video from time to time titled Void Violin, it features some good music.
My favorite picture of V:
That gif of him tripping and dropping his free taco.

Art in HotD - 1x04 “King of the Narrow Sea”
(more art in Westeros) - (more art in HotD)
I didn’t set out to do an episode by episode analysis, but it’s not my fault this show keeps giving me material, so,,, Also I’m sorry for not embedding the references in the post and linking them out instead, but Tumblr keeps a ten images limit per post and I’d rather anchor the commentary in screencaps.
The episode opens with a look at the inside of Storm’s End (which we never got a description of in the books because all the action happens outside). It’s very spartan and undecorated, which sort of tracks with the Baratheon vibe.
Back in King’s Landing, we get a shout out to the textile art of Qohor and Norvos, which shows that they really are doing their homework because the tapestries are only mentioned in passing in the books when describing the council room. Unfortunately we don’t get to actually see them because Viserys decides to be a dick about it to Alicent. Boo.
Tumblr media
We get a good look at the fresco under the wisteria arbor in the godswood. It seems like another instance of Valyrian taste being inspired by Roman antiquity, as it’s reminiscent of Roman garden painting:
Tumblr media
It seems to be a more naturalistic, loose style of painting compared to both the more archaic looking erotic art from inside the Keep and the “international Gothic” style painting behind Viserys in the previous episode. This decorative naturalism tracks with both the paintings we got from imperial Rome, and the Renaissance approach to landscape.
Tumblr media
Are those braziers to the left here dragon shaped or griffin shaped? the way the wings are rendered makes me unsure, but I would actuaally love if - kind of like in the real Middle Ages - the heraldic representation of animals wasn’t entirely accurate (see also the Velaryon seahorse sigil). Or it might really be a griffin, a Connington gift or an Essosi import just like the aforementioned tapestries. I also wondered how many pieces on set were commissioned and how many bought ready made because they fit with the aesthetic.
Tumblr media
The dragon in Rhaenyra’s room. At least she doesn’t get sex/fertility art in the room where she supposedly grew up. My immediate reaction to the picture, however, was to associate it with the erotic paintings because it’s sort of flat and the lines are bold, but it’s also very flowery and ornate in a way that I associate more with the hunt painting from episode three that I “dated” to Jaehaerys’ reign. On the other other hand, the fact that it hides/signals a secret passage makes me think this might also come from Maegor’s reign.
And now, on to the good stuff: the scene where Daemon is banished to the Vale by Viserys gives us a clear, well lit look at the columns in the throne room. Let’s rewind the tape for a moment: the Great Hall in GoT looked like this...
Tumblr media
It makes sense that it looks different two centuries later, and it has become richer and more refined. It also makes sense that Robert’s regime would have tried to hide or destroy the Targaryen signifiers around the Keep as much as possible (though in the books it seems limited to Robert taking down the dragon skulls and no substantial structural change is mentioned). But I also think HotD is jumping at the chance to imbue its design choices with lore in a way that GoT never cared to do, so - besides having an Iron Throne that’s more in line with how it’s described in the books - it makes the throne room another celebration of the history of House Targaryen. And once again it does so by looking at Imperial Rome: enter Trajan’s Column.
Tumblr media
Trajan’s column was a monumental column, and as such didn’t serve a structural purpose like the ones in the Great Hall, but like their obvious inspiration they seem to depict war scenes - if you enlarge the screenshots above you can see soldiers wearing helms, warriors on horseback, archers, and in the bottom frame of the column on the right what seems like a cluster of shields (maybe a callback to the testudo formation, also depicted on Trajan’s column?)
Tumblr media
The middle row here is the most interesting because it seems to depict a dragon wing flying over soldiers, while a crowd overlooks the scene from a balustrade (possibly cheering for the dragon?). If we assume that these columns have been designed with the Roman blueprint in mind, the narrative should be continuous across the different rows, so it’s unlikely that this scene is the conclusion of a war as it’s in a middle row.
Tumblr media
Hard to tell which war, though. The armors and weapons depicted are stylized enough that it’s difficult to date them or even place them geographically; these could be scenes from the Conquest (the first two Dornish wars?), or wars from Valyrian history. Either way, this version of the Great Hall has been designed so that people who enter it see not only grandiosity, but also a long and victorious history; makes sense especially because relatively to Westeros, Targaryens are *new* and foreign, even more so when the Keep was built. The decorations on this most public facing room establish loud and clear that the house of the dragon is strong and has a history, something the sometimes very old nobility of Westeros has got to respect - and fear.

I need to talk about Dr. Manuela Dominguez (from The Magnus Archives). This woman Drives Me Insane. [TL; DR at the bottom.]
She is initially presented as a textbook mad scientist: a disgraced astrophysicist bent on ending the world as we know it. But with every nuance and detail introduced about this character over the course of the narrative, my understanding of her shifted. By the end, I felt as if the person she described at the beginning of her first Statement was completely divorced from the twisted thing she became— which is the repugnant truth of what happens to Fear Avatars.
Some key details from her first Statement that really struck me: 1) I can really see myself in her love for physics and her ambition. 2) Her alienation from her fanatically religious, “vicious” parents is a big contributor to her downfall, but never remotely presented as an excuse for her actions. 3) She is so utterly unrepentant.
Regarding her parents: She saw the inconsistencies and hypocrisy in their bigoted beliefs about what is “unnatural,” likely in part because, she says, “I found myself crossing that line from an early age. Although, strangely, out of everything I was, it was always my desire to pursue a scientific career that they railed against with the most energy” (MAG 135: Dark Matter).
(I could be projecting, but this line has caused me to speculate that she might also be gay. If so, it would certainly add another level of pain &/or frustration to her home situation.)
But young Dominguez disregards her parents’ ludicrous exhortations and goes on to become an an expert on dark matter (mysterious masses that cover much of the universe and do not emit, absorb, or interact with photons) and dark energy (mysterious force which may be responsible for the expansion of the universe).
It is in the process of researching these phenomena that she has a spiritual awakening of the worst kind. She soon becomes a disciple and eventually second-in-command to Maxwell Rayner, ringleader of the cult of the Dark, the Church of the Divine Host (said Host being Rayner). As a cultist, she goes on a mission aboard the vessel of allied Fears that is the Daedalus space station. There, she creates The Extinguished Sun— a sun made of dark matter, which the Church uses as a focal point in their ritual of the same name to bring about eternal darkness.
That brings us to the point where this character loses my sympathy in the same way Callum (Rayner’s partial reincarnation?) did in S5. The Extinguished Sun ritual involves keeping Marked individuals (which events in S5 lead me to fear may be predominantly children) trapped and terrified in the dark for extended periods of time, and then sacrificing them to the Dark via drowning, in a callback to the manner in which Halley/Rayner was killed/reborn as a vessel of the infinite darkness that predates time itself.
So How Am I To Cope??? Do you know how often I come across women as mad scientists in media— let alone ones who are ambiguously implied to be gay?! Not often!
But there is a possibility she kills kids, and I can’t tolerate that shite, so all I am left with is immeasurable disappointment in her lack of conscience, and in her for joining a cult instead of getting therapy, and in her parents for being dicks, and in those who have purveyed ignorance and engaged in cruelty “in the name of God” both historically and unto the modern day, and in society for the continued existence of systemic sexism (and other biases), and in the limited number of women, POC, and LGBT+ individuals portrayed as mad (and regular, marginally less fun) scientists in media, etc… It’s quite the web of inequity and suffering, stretching between this world and the fictional.
Dr. Manuela Dominguez is a character who makes me sad that there aren’t more women mad scientist characters in media. If there were, it perhaps might not hurt so much to see her progress from someone whose trials, goals, and motivations I can understand and empathize with, to an unredeemable child killer.
To clarify, I don’t believe the author’s writing of this character was bad or sexist. I don’t feel the same morose regret about what could have been when it comes to Jude Perry; I do when it comes to Agnes Montague; I don’t when it comes to Gertrude; etc. I think that Jonny intended for the audience to at least passively ponder the person that Dr. Dominguez could have been, under different circumstances. It is a feature of the writing of all the Avatars.
One of the core themes of the series is this: How do circumstances (such as economic systems, wink wink nudge nudge) shape people? Dr. Dominguez is just one of many disheartening answers to that question.
TL;DR: Dr. Dominguez started out as a victim of bad parenting, and eventually into an even more sick and twisted version of her parents, who she despised as a child for their zealotry and cruelty. But this might not hurt me so bad to think about if 1) I didn’t relate so much to her younger self, as an aspiring physicist and a sapphic trying to shake off the message that everything that brings me joy is “unnatural” and 2) if she wasn’t the first character I thought of when trying to recall women mad scientists in media.
For those who feel like looking for other fem mad scientists in podcasts, I believe Ava the theoretical physicist from Midnight Burger and doctor/assassin Vespa Ilkay from Penumbra both count. For a sane fem scientist, try the marine biologist protagonist from DOWN. If you think of any others in any kind of media, you’re welcome to respond in the comments or tags.
(I know of Poison Ivy, as well as the more sane Dr. Sattler from “Jurassic Park” and Dr. Calvin from Isaac Asimov’s “I, Robot,” and I appreciate them. You may leave them out of the replies.)

gonna say smth about a ballad of songbirds and snakes even though i havent read the book and only saw trailers and listened to the olivia rodrigo song
i had a friend who watched the movie and said "it was good but it wasnt really the hunger games" and yeh sounds about right! from what im getting the prequel is built to be aesthetically completely different from the trilogy. the overarching story is entirely different, its focusing on an actual love story/a sort of relationship bw two characters for the major arch of the film, rather than fit that into a saga about fighting the fascist regime
which is not to say the the prequel is just a simple nd shallow story set in the hunger games' world of atrocities, because the relations bw the two characters are still built with that tension in mind. but it should be just ever so slightly separated from those atrocities, only for you to get hit in the face with them when it inevitably tears the characters apart
and thats why i honestly really love the title - its a ballad, its a strange forgotten story, its something just a little different and unknown in this setting. despite only being a few decades b4 the main plot its still set in an othered tone. something that diverges aesthetically from anything you could expect from the hunger games
especially since its a character we know from the trilogy, especially since its so bizarre to see him young and compassionate and full of emotion. its not impossible, it isnt out of character, not really. its just unthinkable - which only adds to that air of the unlikely story about an unlikely relationship
even lucy gray (whom again i only know from trailers) stands out in a way that she could only be seen as a myth through the lenses of the trilogy - as in, through the standard we, the viewers who know how the country looks in its future, expect to see. but shes unique - her attitude towards the capitol, towards snow himself, is defiant and rebellious in a way we never see from anyone aside from those who eventually knock the capitol down
and again, she stays within its limits - right up to the end. the only spoiler i know is what happens to her at the end of the movie, which is the aforementioned punch in the face of the world and its circumstances - such a character doesnt stay, doesnt get an ending of settling down in the system. without knowing id already guessed she either dies or runs off, because theres isnt another option for an end to this ballad. only smth that would truly pin down the story aesthetically, and let us fill in for ourselves the gap of the next few decades in snow's life
and tbh thats why ive been listening to "cant catch me now" on repeat today. bc its so perfect for this tone, for the notion of a forbidden and lost story, which only serves to add a bit of shadow and context to the cold and heartless character we see in the trilogy. the melody is so gentle and free, really ties up the story of these two characters, the final and bottom-line principle we now know of the betrayal and anger snow carries inside him. no sympathy or pity, just acceptance that although there used to be something good in him, it had long since died. all the same longing and emotion, with understanding for the hurt and the pain under the layers of cruelty
from what i gather the country in the movie is set with technology that is perceived to us as just a little outdated for the trilogy, and same with the fashion. and along with all the callbacks/callforwards to the trilogy it only help to build this story as a magical ballad, myth, legend of this world, something so big yet so delicate and special that set in motion the inevitable uprising decades later. the same spark that we saw light up in the trilogy had started burning here. absolutely magical
honestly im interested to hear if i got any of this right. and also do you guys recommend the movie is it good lmk im considering watching it

Tumblr media
You snuck around the trailers, your hands full of shaving cream and a pie. Joey Batey had not seen the last of you.
See, the set of The Witcher was normally pretty laid back, not much more going around other than the normal amounts of jokes and teasing; but Joey motherfucking Batey had decided that a prank-war was in due time, and he had started with you.
First mistake.
You might be the newest cast member, and you were normally a shy person, but you could not step down from a challenge. It was, coincidentally, also how you got the role of Shani in the show. It had been an open call casting, and your friend had dared you to go, so you did. You didn’t expect a callback, much less a third and then a screen test with Henry Cavill. You were about to pass out, when the casting director brought him in, all smiles and a very firm handshake, to test out chemistry between you; for some reason, the whole “love-interest”-thing had whizzed straight over your head, so you were a shaking mess, when you started testing a very specific scene, where Henry’s warm and large hands cupped your face, while spouting declarations of love. It was a lot, but you managed, clearly, because here you were, on set and with a character, who – if you were to believe the rumors – would be a reoccurring character. Fun.
You didn’t expect a fast friendship growing between you and Henry, though. After the screen test, you had been texting and talking pretty much every day, because you had both realized that you were nerds – you spent a lot of time talking about the world of The Witcher, but also just any and everything. And nothing. It had become a habit to just talk through the night, one of you dozing off while still on the phone. The fact that you had developed a slight (big) crush on the 10-year older man, was your own doing and you did your very best to keep it on the downlow. Especially after you began shooting, and you found out he was a very affectionate guy. Hugs, small touches, lips ghosting over your forehead, when he had his arm slung casually over your shoulder. It didn’t mean anything, you were sure – you were just about 99 % certain he saw you as a younger sister or something like that. He helped you figure out what pranks you could pull without getting fired, and he took you everywhere; if he had a thing to do, you were coming. It was kind of cute, the way he’d timidly ask you to join him for another dinner with some “important” people. The big, strong man, who could literally make you fearful of your life with a single glance, was a giant puppy in real life.
When Joey had started the damn prank-war, he had started easy with salted cookies. That was a dick-move, mostly because you really wanted cookies after a 12-hour shoot. You had retaliated with glue in his hand sanitizer. And so, the prank war was born.
The latest thing was over the line. He had transformed your fucking kitchen drawers into fish tanks, and you were having none of it.
Which is why you were sneaking around the trailers with shaving cream and pie, waiting for the golden opportunity to deck Joey.
As soon as he stepped out of his trailer, his eyes glued to his phone, you saw your chance and ran to him, pie smacking straight into his face, before showering him in shaving foam, giggling like a madman. He was spluttering and coughing out shaving cream, and when he looked at you, you knew it was a question of seconds before he lost his shit.
You ran as fast as you could, ignoring your burning lungs and your thighs literally feeling like jello under you, and sprinted to the other end of the set, spotting a familiar flash of greyish white hair and black armor. He saw you as well, a smile lighting up his face.
“Hey, Y/N, did you get to use the…” “Y/N Y/L/N, I am going to kill you!” Henry’s eyes whipped up to see a very angry-looking Joey stalking towards you. Was that shaving cream?
“I love you!” You said, grabbing his arm and tugging him to follow. “Wait, what?” He looked absolutely perplexed, and in any other situation, you’d pinch his cheek, because he looked stupidly cute like that. “No time to explain, let’s go!” you tugged his arm again, and he finally made his feet follow along, running behind you. He wasn’t even out of breath. “If you need to get away quicker, just get on my back.” He said with a grin, jogging next to you. Goddamned long legs. You scoffed.
“As if you could carry me.” You huffed, trying to keep your breathing steady. “Is that a challenge?” He stopped dead in his tracks. Shit. You glanced behind him and saw Joey – now with his arms full of unidentifiable things, that would definitely ruin your day – move towards you with a dangerous smile on his lips. “Shit. Henry, move.” You tried to force him to go with you, but he was a massive man with a lot of grounding, because he didn’t even flinch. “Nope. If I’m your get-away buddy, I’m insisting that I be your get-away vehicle as well.” “Henry, I… I’ll be too heavy.” You didn’t want to debate this stupid topic, much less indulge in your insecurities with a literal God in human form. “Y/N. If you’re trying to say your weight is an issue, I’m strongly advising you to say literally anything else.” He crossed his arms and smirked. You could see several cans of tomato-soup in Joey’s arms now. “Fuck, fine, just… We need to go!” You screamed, quickly maneuvering yourself behind Henry, who bent down a little to allow you to get on his back. “If you break your back trying to carry me, I will end you.” You whispered, wrapping your arms tightly around his neck, clinging on for dear life. You hated this idea. He laughed at you, hoisting you a little higher on his back and straightened out. “Don’t worry, my back can handle a lot.” You felt heat rush to your cheeks at that.  “Henry, do not help her, I swear to God!” Joey yelled out, but Henry just chuckled and waved behind him at Joey, before his arms wrapped around your legs, holding you firmly to his body, and sprinted.
He didn’t break a sweat, and his breathing was weirdly even, despite the speed he was running at, and the added weight on his back. You were bouncing, clinging to him as he ran around the sets, headed to the dense forest that lay just behind it. He didn’t slow down before he was a few good meters into the forest, and he gently put you down next to a giant fir-tree, where you leaned against, clutching your chest.
“Shit, that was more terrifying than being on the back of a motorcycle.” You gasped, trying to lower your heartrate. It wasn’t all because of the running – a lot of it was the fact, that you were so close to him, you could feel his muscles roll under your hands and arms, and his cologne was embedded in your skin now. He grinned.
“Are you telling me you didn’t have fun?” You rolled your eyes and finally looked up at him. He was looking at you strangely. “Y/N…” Oh no, here it goes. You were heavy, he probably dislocated something. “Why on earth did you think you were too heavy?” he asked instead, and you blinked a few times. “Uh…. Because I am…?” you said slowly and groaned at his expression. “I mean, clearly, I wasn’t right now, but like… generally speaking.” He tilted his head. “Darling, I could pick you up with one arm and not think twice about it. You are not too heavy.” That sparked some very inappropriate thoughts in your head, that you desperately needed to go away. “I, uh… Sure, Henry.” He stepped closer, his chest almost touching you; the black armor made a delicious sound of leather straining against leather, and you had to will yourself to hear what he said. “You are challenging me, sweetheart.” “Oh, no, not at all.” You could hear how damn bratty you sounded. “I mean, I—humpf.” You shrieked, when you were lifted from the ground by a single arm around your waist, Henry pinning your back to the tree behind you while grinning at you. Your heart did a somersault right in your chest, and you cursed how good he looked with the wig on.
“Okay, fine, fine, you’ve proved your point.” You said, gasping a little. He didn’t let you down but stepped even closer and slotted himself between your legs – by instinct, you wrapped them around his hips. “I have a question for you, Y/N.” He said seriously, his perfect lips mere inches from your face. “Mhm?” You didn’t trust your voice at this moment, so you figured a nonsensical noise would be better to avoid embarrassment. He cocked an eyebrow at you. “Would me buying you a can of shaving cream and a cream pie have anything to do with Joey being covered in white goo?” You laughed and snorted in a very unladylike manner. “Maybe. Maybe not. It’s best for you to stay out of it, I can’t have your life on my conscience.” He laughed a little at that. “I think I’m already involved now.” “Shit, yeah, probably. Uh…” You looked down at your body, ignoring the way your stomach rolled, to see your legs still tightly wrapped around his hips. “Could I, uh, get my feet back on solid ground?” You asked timidly, heat flaring in your cheeks. He thought for a moment, before his grip on your waist tightened. “No. I have another important question.” “Okay?” you swallowed thickly. Don’t think about his cock, don’t think about his cock, don’t think about…
“This is actually a really important question, darling. And I need you to be very honest with me.” His expression changed from jovial to something more serious and something else, you couldn’t quite put your finger on. “Are you comfortable right now?” You furrowed your brows. “I mean… Like right this second?” He nodded. You shifted a little, accidentally rolling your hips. A barely noticeable hiss fell from his lips, which you also decided to ignore. You’d done a lot of ignoring today. “Uhm… I mean, the bark isn’t really super duper soft, but other than that… Yes…? Was that your very important question?” He smiled softly. When did his face come so close to yours? “Not really, no. I just wanted to check in.” “Oh…Kay?” He swallowed and you watched his Adam’s apple bop a little. “I can’t put this out there in an eloquent way, so I’ll just come right out with it.” Oh God. You were getting fired. Maybe. Probably. Your heart sped up and you were intently focused on his eyes. “Is there a reason, you haven’t ever returned any of my sad attempts at flirting?” You almost choked on thin air. “I’m sorry?” “I’ve been flirting with you for the better part of six months, love. I mean, I know I’m old and a little rusty in that department, but I feel like at least some of it must’ve come across.” “I…” You didn’t know what to say, and honestly, your brain was short-circuiting at the moment, because his thumb had begun rubbing small circles on your waist. “You’ve been flirting. With me.” It sounded like a statement more than a question. He chuckled. “I have. I don’t talk to just anyone throughout a day and night, pretty much every day. I also don’t touch anybody just for the hell of it.” You thought back to all the small touches, and what you had perceived as just the way he was – in hindsight, you could see that he didn’t do that to anyone else on set. “But… I’m me.” “I would hope you are.” His forehead rested against yours now. “I should’ve said something sooner.” “No, I mean… You’re a literal God on earth, and I’m… Jiggly. And ten years younger than you, I might add.” You said slowly, trying to keep your composure. “Didn’t you tell me a week ago: age is but a number, baby?” “I might’ve.” “Besides, you’re… Perfect. For me, I mean. In my eyes.” He drew a deep breath, his lips twitching a little. “God, the things I’ve imagined doing to you…” You could’ve died right there. “I would happily die, if it was death by your thighs.” You couldn’t swallow. “And I’ve had the filthiest thoughts… Whenever we talked on Facetime, all I wanted to do was reach through the fucking screen and touch your skin… Show you just what I want to do with you.” He licked his lips. “Unfortunately, I am a British man, and we’re stupidly good at being gentlemen, which means my brain has been screaming at me to take you to dinner, and then ravish you.” You squeaked at that, your entire body buzzing. “I didn’t… Uh…” “I’ll leave it be, never talk about it again and we’ll go back to being friends, if you don’t feel even a sliver of something towards me. I’d hate it and I must be honest, I doubt I can continue being your friend.” Your breathing was shallow now, and you move your hands to his hair, toying with the damned wig just to do something. “I can’t say I’m not feeling something.” You admitted. “Why would you not… Be able to continue being my friend?” You asked slowly, your eyes settling on his blue. “Because all I’ve wanted to do for months is this.”
He kissed you softly, lips hesitant and sweet like honey, like he was testing the waters. You were having none of that. It was like a kick of a drug to your system, every nerve and cell standing ready – you kissed him back with ferocity, as if it was your last day on earth, wrapping your arms around his neck and pressed your body even closer to his. You wanted to fucking melt together with him, his lips never leaving yours, because this was probably the only thing you’d ever care about ever again. The feeling of his lips against yours, the way he groaned into the kiss, his eagerness to return the kiss with just as much ferocity as you brought to him, was intoxicating.
It could’ve been minutes or hours before he pulled back, peppering small kisses on your face.
“I’ll take it as you being just fine with this?” he asked, slightly out of breath. You felt something nudge your thigh and you raised your eyebrows. “I mean… Yes.” You rolled your hips against him, and he groaned, closing his eyes and tightened his grip on your waist. “Love, you need to stop that. We have a scene in…” He glanced at his clock. “Five minutes, and I cannot be hard and thinking of the various things, I have to do to you.” You cocked an eyebrow and kissed him again, your tongue sliding against his lower lip. “That would be a bad idea, wouldn’t it?” You whispered against his lips. He nodded, kissing you again. “And I definitely shouldn’t say something that would make your situation worse, right?” “Don’t you dare.” You sighed and hugged him, your lips brushing his ear as you whispered.
“I won’t, then.” You smiled, when you felt him exhale and sag slightly. “I just… Really wanted you inside of me, right here.” You rolled your hips again and was rewarded with the best gasping groan, you’d ever heard. “Darling…” He gripped your hair lightly to force you to look at his eyes, that had darkened significantly. “Don’t test me, or I’ll have to force you to see just how badly I could ruin you.” “Try me.”
And after his scenes, try you, he did. Several times, in fact. Loudly – loudly enough for the crew to wish you both congratulations, when you came out of your trailer, your neck covered in his love-bites and your hair a rat’s nest on your head.

Some character notes and episode notes for HZ043, writing them down for future reference.
Some callbacks to HZ008 (which was also written by Naruki Nagakawa) with the shopping at the beginning. Roy and Friede getting sidetracked by a line for sweets, neglecting their shopping in the process. Mollie was in a better mood than usual thanks to the cheap stuff she found so she didn't scold them, but she was kind of judging them. Also, Friede is trusting Roy to do his shopping by himself since he was willing to split to go faster. Usually, Friede watches over the kids and stay with them in an unknown city, but now they are growing and can buy groceries by themselves.
As they finish their shopping, Liko notices (thanks to Mibrim) an old man who seems to need help but she finds his expression intimidating so she isn't sure what to do... Roy immediately understands that the old man threw out his back because he is used to his grandpa or Landau scowling when it happens. Loved this casual show of Roy's perceptiveness since he pays a lot of attention to his surroundings usually. Liko and Roy end up helping the old man and Nyahoja gives him a back massage (casual show of Nyahoja's relaxing abilities too, which is nice). The old man is the manager for the store selling the Umidigda sweets so he gives Liko and Roy a box for free to thank them for their help.
In the meantime, Onyx and Sango come to town as well. Onyx is not impressed (but he still tagged along with Sango in the first place). Sango disguises herself to not attract attention and came to town specifically for the sweets. She stood in line like everyone else, but didn't get a box since they were limited... she made a scene but is thrown out of the store. She ends up seeing Liko and Roy with a box of the sweets and gets pissed that they got one despite not waiting in line like everyone else, so she swears revenge (and somehow managed to stick a letter on Hogator's back to tell them to meet at the Kabigon Rock).
Back in the ship, Kanuchan wants food but Dot is busy so she goes where the other Pokemon are to get some. She ends up dropping her plate of food as she tries to go back to Dot's room so Terapagos leads her to Nuoh who shares berries with her. Liked this little moment of Terapagos acting more like a "big sibling" now, especially since he used to be the baby who didn't know anything on the ship. I feel like lots of Pokemon are growing lately (like Mibrim who had responsability over Terapagos a few eps ago, etc). And I just generally like seeing the way different Pokemon interact with each other. Kanuchan went back to Dot's room to share food with Kuwassu and Dot praised her for it (the whole message of sharing and kindness in the ep in opposition to Sango etc).
Liko and Roy meet up with Sango after reading the letter of challenge. They banter back and forth because Sango is asking them for the sweets and feels entitled to them, while Roy thinks she is spouting nonsense. Liko offered to give one to her to appease her, but Sango got angry that she opened the box at all. She revealed herself as being from the Explorers (introduces herself to both of them and reveals her name) and Onyx joins her since he was wondering what was taking her so long. Liko wanted to contact Friede to let him know about their situation but Roy was more willing to jump into action (I keep liking the way they react differently about things: Liko thought it was best not to go to the meeting spot while Roy wanted to know what the letter was about, etc). Sango and Onyx challenge Roy and Liko respectively to a battle. Sango felt offended by Roy so she singled him out as an opponent, and Onyx asked Liko politely to be his opponent. When Sango was revealed as a character back in ep 16, I thought she could maybe be a good opponent to Roy, so it's fun that they took this path now (and Roy and Liko both have the type advantage with Sango and Onyx, so).
The battle was nice and highlighted different sides of Liko and Roy. Even though Roy was willing to accept the challenge and battle (while Liko was more cautious), I feel like he gets overwhelmed in these kinds of situations? While Liko performs well and "sees" more clearly under pressure and situations like that, which is interesting to me (in comparison at the beginning of the episode, she was stressing out when the old man scowled because of his back pain, while Roy easily reached out to him). Liko and Roy were on their own this time and managed to hold out despite who their opponents are. It felt like Roy was overwhelmed and paralyzed at some points because he didn't think of using Stomping Tantrum to do something about the ice, but then he remembered it. I like that he has moments of hesitations, too. Liko was shown thinking and tried to strategize too. She used what she learned during her training against Diana back in HZ033 too (that there is always a way to battle against a bigger or stronger foe, with Nyahoja using the fact she is smaller to her advantage to attack her opponent from its blind spot). While Onyx and Sango weren't going all out (from their own admission), Liko and Roy used their knowledge to do what they could and stood their ground and their opponents acknowledged that.
The battle was eventually called off since Onyx got a call about his mission. Onyx prioritizes the mission over the battle so he left and brought Sango with him even though she wanted to stay and finish the battle. They play off each other nicely, honestly. Sango revealed the Explorers' plan to summon Rayquaza before leaving. Onyx was revealed to have a second Pokemon too (a Ptera, which stroke me as curious since it's an ancient Pokemon while the Explorers seem more futuristic given the technology they use in general).
Liko collapsed on the ground after Onyx and Sango left, it felt like the stress left her and she was trying to keep it together the whole time. I love how things like that affect her and that they show the kids get scared but try to be courageous nonetheless. Liko immediately reassured her Pokemon too, even though she was scared, she still makes sure to let them know things are okay.
At the end, Friede meets up with Liko and Roy and they tell him what happened and what the Explorers said about summoning Rayquaza. He makes the connection between the island they mentioned and the strange tower they saw in the pictures of Irukaman in the previous episode. Friede decides to go investigate. Roy gives Cap and Lizardon some sweets before they leave (which was really nice of him). Liko feels uneasy about the Explorers' plan and wonders what they are up to.

And like--another thing--
Zurg never really had to be Buzz Lightyear’s dad for me. I always figured that line in Toy Story 2 was more about the fact that, when you’re a toy and you believe in your own (usually limited) Toy Lore rather than understand that you are in fact a toy, then you become your own unreliable narrator in a lot of ways because you’re stuck filling in gaps--the toys only seem to know as much as what’s on their box or what they see in commercials of themselves. I mean it’s still clear that even toys who don’t know they’re toys instinctively accept and embrace being with played with by a kid, so I figured the fight between The Other Buzz and Zurg was just... taking the belief in one’s own Not Real Toy Lore Narrative to its natural extreme, but it also falls into this natural instinct of ‘play’ and the ‘Father’ line is more like... falling into this“Yes, and?” improv instinct.
Like, “This is clearly our life or death climactic fight! What’s the most dramatic thing we could say!?” because as far as they’re concerned they’re both in this intense space opera, and then you have the ‘I am your father’ spoof and like... the thing about most Toy Lore, at least as it was in the 90′s, was it tended to be very limited to what could be made into a toy--like, look at He-Man’s gradually growing cast of characters with extremely wacky and specific abilities and you kind of get what I’m saying. Like as we got into the 2000′s, toy lore definitely got more involved (see: Bionicle), and Buzz Lightyear of Star Command as a product of its time, actually reflected that really well. It literally felt like the saturday morning sugary breakfast cereal cartoon Andy might watch and go, “Mom, can I get that toy??” While also... literally being an early 2000′s cartoon that had a lot of loving, fun-poking vibes towards sci fi action serials like Buck Rogers. And the fact that Buzz Lightyear of Star Command is a cartoon in the Toy Story universe was actually set up in the opening minutes of the movie by having all the toys gather around to watch the movie on video.
I don’t recall the father thing ever being a thing in Buzz Lightyear of Star Command--Buzz kind of had his own foil/dark reflection in the character Warp Darkmatter (his former partner who turned out to be a double agent for Zurg the whole time). Just... I don’t know, man. Lightyear was a movie that was so intent on tying itself up in callbacks while also shrugging off so much of the campiness, actual lore, and self-aware embracing of sci-fi genre tropes that you’re still stuck asking “Who is this for???”
Also I miss Zurg being a campy, snarky, megalomaniac bitch.
And also I still think a Woody movie should have come first.

2 cool 4 skool album analysis: Intro
Well, friends, I have returned, much changed and yet not at all changed. Sliding in under the wire of January, this is me making good on my promise to post a track-by-track analysis of 2 Cool 4 Skool by BTS. If I can stay on top of it, I plan to do this monthly until 2025, according to this schedule.
Some things about what to expect: I'm a classically trained singer and instrumentalist with two music degrees, neither of which has anything to do with pop music or music production. What you get are my highly trained listening ears and my very subjective thoughts and feelings about this music. I'm going at this from a baseline of deep love and respect for BTS, so if I seem to be critical or poke fun at them, please bear in mind that it comes from a place of affection.
So we're getting started with the very beginning of BTS: 2 Cool 4 Skool. Which, believe it or not, is technically considered a single album. If you only look at the three song tracks, that seems plausible, but it's also got an instrumental introduction and interlude, plus two skits (“Skit: Circle Room Talk” and “Outro: Circle Room Cypher”), not to mention the two hidden tracks on the physical (“Skit: On the Start Line” and “Path”). For a single album, it's packed. It goes along with the early Bangtan theme of doing the most. Like, this was your debut? Are we kidding?
I was fascinated and honestly a little baffled by the structure of this album when I first encountered it, and I've since come to understand that the non-song tracks, particularly the skits, are actually a hip-hop album thing. As much as we can look at early BTS and see the limitations in their understanding of what hip hop actually was (and was not), they were, at least, doing their best to emulate and respect what they saw as the characteristics of the genre.
The first track is simply called “Intro: 2 Cool 4 Skool”, produced by Supreme Boi. It opens with a sample from a disco instructional record, which is delightful enough on its own, but Wikipedia tells me that it's actually a callback to the 2003 Epik High track “Go” from an album called, believe it or not, Map of the Human Soul. Epik High is definitely on my list of groups to learn more about, not only because their influence was so formative to BTS, but also because Tablo just seems like a really cool guy.
I don't have an awful lot more to say about “Intro: 2 Cool 4 Skool” as a track. The whole vibe is immaculate - the record scratches, the heavy reverb on the drums, the gunshots and the slowdown at the end, you listen to this minute-long snippet and you know exactly what you’re getting into. It starts off the album as unmistakably a hip-hop record in both function and vibe, featuring (in Korean) the lyric, “We tell our story in a carefree way on behalf of those in their 10s and 20s”. It makes a really good, encapsulated statement about what to expect from this single album and from this group.
From here on out, each track will be getting its own post, however short - I don’t anticipate having a massive essay on Circle Room Talk, for instance, but I will be splitting them up for organization’s sake. Translations will always come from Doolset Lyrics unless otherwise noted.
Look forward to the rest of the album posts coming soon.

Looking at jm’s tracklist for FACE got me really surprised because the a lot of producers that posted pics with him aren’t on there (except for pdogg ofc lol)… it got me wondering if jm’s has plans on releasing whatever they worked on down the line if it wasnt scrapped… really glad abt the credit though because not only does it seem like FACE is fully in house project but we got Rm writing too (minimoni collab 💜💜💜) and most especially JM has writing credits on all of the tracks except for interlude!!! jm worked really hard and judging from the snippets we heard from the behind video, I know I’m gonna fall in love at first listen… sad that there’s no yoonmin tho, altho set me free pt 2 is potentially a callback for d2 interlude set me free. I’m looking forward to JM’s spin on it!! Some people are disappointed that the album is gonna be short but tbh jm has the least experience in writing/producing his own solo songs so I wasn’t surprised but i know for sure they’ll be quality tracks because of his historg of producing bangers. I had also been guessing that jm will be doing full promo and seeing that he has an eng vers for a track makes me certain that there are plans for us promo too!
Ive been laughing at your reply to the anon abt FACE all day bpp but it also has me delulu that maybe he’ll release a makeup line because that man can definitely sell out just from his face alone and the colors for the album itself def very similar to what brands are releasing these days… army twt def makes me delulu with all the edits too… like didnt nwjns release some kind of limited ed bag for their debut album??? imagine if one of the tannies did that…
*
Ask 2: addtnl bec i accidentally pressed the button to send the ask without finishing
seeing pdogg in the credits for FACE tho makes me kind of wary that he’ll have jm use his higher register again but seeing that this is jm’s solo album and they dont have to worry abt his voice harmonizing with the rest of the members to make tracks that work i am very hopful that we’ll hear jm’s lower register more…
i’m hoping that at least one of the dance performance will have him doing some pole work too… maybe not the whole song but like a segment of it… i’ve been watching a lot of pole dance videos and there’s a lot of beauty that can be created in it it’s truly an art form too and jm has the muscle strength to execute those moves perfectly too… i really cant wait for march!!!!
***
Hi Anon,
I loved reading this. Thanks for taking the time to lay out your thoughts so fully. But before anything else, and because I've seen this in a few places, I want to start off with one thing:
"Looking at jm’s tracklist for FACE got me really surprised because the a lot of producers that posted pics with him aren’t on there (except for pdogg ofc lol)"
It's possible those people still worked on the album. Visiting another producer can serve a myriad of purposes - those producers could have worked on the arrangement, Jimin could've used their sound engineers, recorded vocals in their studios for processing, etc. It's also possible you're right and these were initial meetings to discuss ideas and establish a relationship on which Jimin can leverage for his later music. But I'm saying this to point out we haven't seen the full credits yet. Pdogg as main producer and Jimin working with RM who has supported every solo venture Jimin has ever done, is obvious too, but we won't see the full credits until the album is out.
As for the make-up line, I think I've been saying forever that in my head, Jimin already has a fragrance house. What I want for Jimin is for him to delve headfirst into releasing a whole line of perfumes (sorry, make-up lovers). I know he loves flowers but for some reason, I imagine he smells more gourmand and musky with a hint of citrus and chypre, rather than floral scents. But yes just his face alone on any sort of palette would sell it out instantaneously lmao.
I think we're also getting a standard BTS cardboard album packaging lol. NewJeans is under Ador, not under BigHit, and we know that Ador and BigHit are fully independent sub-labels under HYBE, meaning what NewJeans does has zero bearing on anything BigHit does... for better or worse.
Your mention of pole dancing reminded me of that edit that dropped after Jimin mentioned wanting to do it for a Run episode.

(This non-Jimin is doing such a superb job)
*
Yes let's have Jimin in a skintight mesh piece showing off his full back tattoos doing an inverted crucifix move with black hair and black nails. All our synapses will misfire (and this likely has an 80% of not happening), but after writing out my own outlandish wish list for PJM1 (now, FACE), who am I to say nay?
I'm not the type to analyze album covers, concept photos, or even album/song descriptions so I don't have much to say right now, until I actually hear the music. After the initial excitement, I'm now stuck in this 'let's wait and see' limbo, but I do have certainty about one thing:
Jimin is coming to fuck all of us up.
