Lately I've started thinking that Furue Jin is so absent from Nirvana Initiative on purpose. Hear me out. Here's a list of things we learn about Jin complete with how we learn it:
He is a CEO of a japan only not-spotify, a businessman and author. Boss and several other characters tell this to us. Riichi mentions that although they're both rich businessmen and he's heard of him, they have not met.
He runs a twitter account! Everyone has a different opinion about this twitter account, from Kagami thinking he's "a brilliant genius who isn't afraid of cutting through bullshit," to Amame thinking he "a pretentious jerk who constantly complains online to draw attention to himself". We never see his twitter account or any of the tweets. He circulates that picture of "himself" online, but we don't see the evidence of that either. It's just told to us.
He spent his whole childhood and teenage years in the hospital, and even went to school there because he was ill. We learn this from Shouma who also remarks how lonely he must have been.
The nurse says that "Jin-chan" was extremely meek and timid, and couldn't even use the restroom alone. She also says he was very meticulous and tidy.
Horadori Chikara called Jin "the almighty" because of a birthmark on his face that resembles a % sign, which is an important cult symbol. To him, Jin is a vehicle for perfection/god. We learn this from Shigure.
At one point, Shigure Tokiko loved him because he was her son and did not want to give him up. She then stopped caring about him or anyone after a suicide attempt when the guilt from kidnapping a child got too real.
Uru accuses Jin of constantly mocking him in the same paragraph he mentions Jin has apologized one million times before in his murder diary. Uru also patently does not understand at all why "Mom" "loves" Jin. Mizuki concludes Jin was not a bad guy at the end of the game and that he meant that apology. We do not see this event in a flashback or have a record of Jin's thoughts before he went down there.
There's a trend here. None of this is first hand. Now, you might think "well he's dead first thing so we can't get too much from him himself" but that's weaksauce look. Renju was dead first thing and we had several flashbacks with him IN it, and this game makes great use of reading journals and diaries. There's no reason they can't have shown us something he wrote, his tweets, his social media, his writing, his thoughts in the hospital—anything! This is deliberate.
It's all other people's recollection and opinions; he's a mirror to project on. With a game about duality, they've made a lot of use of the mirror motif, so here's a guy who exists only in reflections had by other people. In universe, he has half of Uru's body, but in the narrative he has NOTHING of his own. Whatever you make of him is entirely determined by the filters of other characters and then yourself.
I think this is a bold choice, and certainly interesting, but I still can't say I think it's a good one. He's the very first victim and too wrapped up in Uru's trauma to be so missing from the text. The duality motif would be better explored by having him appear to be one way and then revealed another way without all the layers and layers and layers of guesswork and interpretation because of subjective opinions WITHIN THE TEXT by having him also be a mirror guy. It's getting in its own way, and it makes his death have like no emotional impact, which is weird. He's the FIRST VICTIM. I SHOULD CARE MORE THAT HE DIED. It's not really great if at the end of the mystery most players are asking "hey so who even really. Was the dead guy anyway." And there's more interesting story potential in allowing him to BE then in obfuscating him.

Anime NYC 2023 - I Still Have a Place
Tumblr media
What a weekend.
Anime NYC 2023 just ended and while there were a few things I didn't like, I really enjoyed my time there this year. And more importantly, it was a personal epiphany for me.
I started the weekend by attending the Viz Media panel. There weren't really any significant announcements, but Yoshifumi Tozuka, the creator of Undead Unluck, stopped by and he was great. It was a teaser of his own panel the following day, but Tozuka-sensei did enlighten fans about Undead Unluck and how he wanted to present the series to fans worldwide.
After that, I went to the Autism in the Anime Fan Community panel. This was a live panel version of the "Autism in the Anime Fan Community - Solo Version" video by James Williams, an anime fan diagnosed with autism and a public speaker on autism awareness. James has been doing the panel at various conventions over the past couple of years. It was a very raw and vulnerable panel on the challenges those with autism face at conventions. James also had a special guest, Larissa Grabois, an artist who uses music and art to teach people about children living with autism. She has music videos and books pertaining to autism on her website and I will be paying very close attention. This provided much food for thought.
After that, I didn't stick around for the night panels. Though It was nice to hear Denpa license the ODDTAXI manga as I know people who adored the anime when it came out.
So onto Saturday, I went to the Yen Press panel and was impressed with what they did. They did a fun "Know the Editors" section alongside their announcements, where each editor would promote a title they work on and provide "Useful Nihongo" (which isn't actually useful in a regular context) to use. It was pretty funny to see. Yen Press also gave a shout out to The Summer Hikaru Died, which I yelled "YES!" to. Not many of the new titles they licensed caught my eye, but the one that did was She Likes Gays, But Not Me. I will say this - the manga isn't a romantic comedy and that's why I can't wait for its release in 2024.
Afterwards, I went to the Dark Horse Manga panel. There wasn't really anything new announced per say, but they did promote the latest Deluxe Edition of Berserk and the 1st omnibus of Innocent coming out very soon. Also, Carl Horn and Zack Davisson are truly the manzai duo of the manga industry scene. They have a very fun chemistry that really takes the best of both of their personalities and mixes them into something you really don't see in manga publisher panels. Both also know A LOT about comics in general. If you ever get a chance to see a Dark Horse Manga panel, do it. Carl and Zack really make worth it your while.
I didn't stick around for the later panels on Saturday night, but I know the Kodansha Manga panel that happened that night was great. There's a LOT of fun stuff coming out from them in the future. Blue Lock has become arguably THE big mainstream manga hit of 2023. I love a lot of their titles as their stories are often ones I value highly. What I'm looking forward from them? Home Office Romance (which was REALLY popular in the manga Reddit) and Sheltering Eaves (Another Rie Aruga story? Sign me up).
On Sunday, I only attended the Star Fruit Books panel. I got to learn a lot about the company being there and it was actually a small group of people who attended. So it made for a more intimate experience compared to other industry panels. Even though the publisher started during COVID, they have made huge strides in being an strong publisher of independent manga (alongside Denpa). I actually inquired about them possibly licensing manga stories from indie creators about mental health/illness because I have heard there's a lot of manga out there in Japan that covers those topics.
After that, I was done with everything. I did manage to get some nice items from booths and played mahjong with the Riichi Nomi club.
I think the convention was fine for the most part. It was crowded, but I didn't feel overwhelmed. I always had space to move around. The only things that stood out to me were that some of the panel rooms were a bit too warm to my liking and that the gaming area just felt too tight. In particular, mahjong. My club's presence last year had a good amount of space for mahjong. This year, we were relegated to the show floor and to a far end corner of the convention center. I hope this changes next year.
(Side note: NYC public transit on the weekend continues to suck ass. Why have a train stop right next to the convention center when weekend construction would prevent trains from stopping there? Sigh.)
And speaking of next year, Anime NYC 2024 will happen in the summer - August 23-25, 2024. It's going to be the bang that ends summer convention season in the U.S. after Anime Expo, San Diego Comic-Con and Otakon. There's definitely concerns about the timing, but they will have the FULL convention center at their disposal. I don't mind honestly as I dislike going to a convention when it's happening a month before winter starts.
Anyway, I'm going to finally make a reference to the headline of my post. For those of you who read my birthday post, anime and manga don't seem to inspire me a great deal lately. Getting into mahjong was one of the best things I did for my mental health over the past 2 years. Despite being a manga blogger, I was becoming more of a mahjong addict.
However, when I arrived to the con on Friday, I was greeted by a manga journalist/colleague that I hadn't seen in years. It was a surprise to see them and we caught up. We had a wonderful discussion about manga, comics and pop culture.
And then on Saturday, I got to meet people I followed on Twitter that I never met in person. I even reunited with a few blogger folks along the way. We talked about manga and convention trends that made me smile. I also met up with Anime for Humanity (who I volunteered in the past) and finally met its founder at the event. I even reunited with a local Japanese culture personality that I hadn't talked to in years. It felt really cool.
To cap it off, I finally reunited with Peter Tatara, who was working the Japan Society booth. For those who don't know, he is the founder of Anime NYC and now Director of Film at Japan Society New York. He also has a long and established history of promoting anime in New York. When I first started my foray into anime fandom in 2008, it was Peter who MCed events at the Kinokuniya NYC store that got me hyped. We worked together at those events a few times due to a mutual connection we both shared. Even though he's a huge and very busy personality now, Peter would take the time to talk to me in years past. We both shared laughs and talked about how long we known each other.
Ever since I got so deep into mahjong, I questioned my place in the manga fan community. I wasn't active as much on Twitter as other online manga personalities these last few years. While I do get hyped, I don't get heavily excited covering manga license announcements. I don't have a huge manga collection at home. I struggle to keep up with everything.
And then someone at the con told me that because of my interest in what's happening the world regarding mental health problems that plague communities, I still bring a certain view that's unique and refreshing to hear. After meeting and reuniting with a bunch of faces, I can't leave the manga blogging scene. I just can't. I love talking about manga so much still. Mahjong still has a place in my heart, but there's nothing that gets me going like talking about the stories and characters that shape people's lives.
What's more important is that being around the industry/pros/press folks I was with at Anime NYC tell me that I still have a place here. I may not be attending everything manga-related, but I want to be the person from the shadows who talks about things that definitely deserve to be heard. Besides, it's much cooler doing things in the shadows than being in the spotlight.
An old friend I saw at the convention on Sunday said that I looked the happiest I've been in years. Mahjong definitely played a huge part in that and I want to bring that energy back into my manga blogging.
I've been going to conventions for 15 years now. So many people in my life that I met via conventions have come and gone. People that I wish were still here. I have often felt lonely. Being 41 now also doesn't help either.
And yet, I keep meeting new people at conventions like Anime NYC who inspire me and value my take on things. I may not be living the best life, but I'm definitely happy-ish with what I have now. And that's all I ever wanted to ask for.
Also, thank you to everyone I talked to at Anime NYC. I'm now really ready for the 2nd half of my life.

[Translation] Spider / One Day Friday 1
A few weeks prior
Kohaku: Uuun...
Rinne: C'mon, c'mon! No matter how much you sit stumped on it, your tiles won't change! Stop your worrying and just choose your discarded tiles already, Kohaku-chan!
Tumblr media
Kohaku: Shut it. You're distracting me so just shut up already. Okay, I've decided! I'll pick this tile.
Tumblr media
Rinne: Fuu~n. Kohaku-chan, I'm starting to see what your plan is now, but I guess that goes both ways. Woah...! This tile! It feels good in my hand! Not only that, but these four bumps I feel on my fingers....! Alllllright! It's here, it's here, it's here! I've been waiting for you, goddess of luck-chan~! Gyahaha! Today's my lucky day! I'm gonna win this game in a flash! Riichi*!
HiMERU: --Fu. Amagi, you can get heated up all you want, but please don't make such a racket. This is still a public place of relaxation. HiMERU doesn't want to be side eyed. On top of that, HiMERU will also call "riichi".
Kohaku: Wha--? Rinne-han went, and then HiMERU-han did it too?! Uun...
Kohaku: (Will this tile work...? --No way, isn't that too risky? I guess I really can only play this one here...)
Niki: Kohaku-chan, Kohaku-chan! That tile there is too dangerous, this tile here might be more cheap.**
Kohaku: Really? So then in that case, Niki-han is right. I'll cut this tile right here, so there.
Rinne: Arrrgh! Niki, you bastard! The hell are you advising him for? You're working, so get your ass back to it!
Niki: Oh no~...I was just gonna leave it as is too. But I just felt really bad for Kohaku-chan falling for Rinne-kun's poison since he doesn't know much about mahjong. Right, here's each of your orders. Even though there's so many limited autumn specials, everyone is still getting their usuals. If I were any of you, I'd choose the specials above anything else!
Rinne: Dumbass. A man should always have a one track mind on what he sets his heart on.
Niki: Big talk coming from the most careless person here.
Rinne: Right, right. Niki sure loves my knuckle sandwiches doesn't he? I'll feed you as much as you want, so eat up!
Tumblr media
Niki: Agyagaga! Mmphhrmmph*** (As much as I love anything I can eat, I definitely won't eat thooose...!)
Kohaku: C'mon, Rinne-han. You too Niki-han. Quit getting violent, you'll cause a scene.
Rinne: Fine. Yeah I got it.
Niki: Augh! Come on...I was totally dragged into this. I didn't even say anything wrong. And, for the record, as a chef I couldn't possibly let myself ignore these limited time offers. A time that's limited like this means that this is the perfect time to enjoy ingredients in season. Autumn is like a treasure chest of food~!
HiMERU: Speaking of autumn. There's an event next month called "ES Halloween" that is going to be held. Amagi, is "Crazy:B" not going to participate? Up until today, the subject hasn't been brought up.
Rinne: Nn...?
Rinne: .........
Rinne: Ah. That's right! I totally forgot to let you guys know. Rinne-kun's such a careless little bee~
Kohaku: Just what are you on about?
Rinne: "Crazy:B" is also gonna participate in "ES Halloween"!
Kohaku: Hah?! You should've said so sooner!
Niki: Crazy:B is participating too...just what on earth are we gonna do?
Rinne: A live concert, of course! Called "Foooo! Let's Halloween Night"! Sounds like a super fun event for us, right? So let's get fired up and excited!
Kohaku: Halloween, huh....?
Niki: Hm? Kohaku-chan, you don't look too interested?
Kohaku: It's not that I'm not interested...I'm just not familiar with it.
Tumblr media
HiMERU: --Well, it's true that Halloween hasn't become so popular until recently. Not long ago, Halloween was simply seen as a Western event that was almost unfamiliar to people here in Japan. At most, Christmas may have been the only other important thing here.
Niki: It’s like my time has finally come for me! Halloween is my favorite holiday~, so I’m glad it’s getting popular!
Kohaku: Fuu~n…I don’t get why it got so popular so fast.
Rinne: Ah. What’s that? Could it be you don’t know about Halloween, Kohaku-chan? You’re pretty boxed up aren’t you?
Kohaku: That’s because I’ve been “boxed up” in a zashikirou.
Rinne: There, there. So that you don’t feel left out at event, Kohaku-chan, I’m gonna give you a full time course on etiquette.
Kohaku: Don’t pat me so casually. I know what it is. I may not have experienced it, but I learned about it plenty from the Internet. These days, it just seems like an event for younger people to walk around in cosplay. Well, either way it’s just a childish event.
HiMERU: Agreed. But apparently, the Halloween event held at ES this year is not just child’s play.
Kohaku: Hah…?
(*): I'm not much of an expert on mahjong, but I know for sure this is one of the ways of winning. Riichi is what the players call when they only have one tile left to meet requirements of winning in their closed hand, and wants to bet I think 100 points? Or maybe it's 1000 idrk. I also know that calling riichi is a possibility of winning. The player can't change their hand in any way and I guess they have to hope their next drawn tile is a winning one. I don't know if there are other conditions that need to be met as I've only watched ppl play and never played myself, but the more you know! It's definitely a fitting game for Crazy:B here that's for sure.
(**): Again, never played mahjong but from what I understand by watching, parts of a player's hand have values placed onto them based on the tiles. So Niki ofc here is advising Kohaku with a play that will give him less of a loss of value I think
(***): Some distressed noises followed by whatever Niki is saying in parenthesis, but muffled. It's actually written out in the dialogue box as you can see but I had no idea how to write it out so I just wrote it as muffled noises please forgive me and please save him

Tierlist of how much I like the writing of each character woooo (spoilers under the cut)
Tumblr media
Formatted with reoccurring characters before new characters. not that it matters but in case you were wondering why Kagami is first
Comments:
DONE SO WELL: I think Kagami is funny thank you for confirming him as bi. Everyone else is new and I just like their writing I don’t have any criticisms. Everything hidden from the player makes sense to me and I love Ryuki and Tama’s dynamic, and... Komeji probably isn’t on most people’s “good writing” list but I just like how complex he is without any complaints ^^
They did well!!! I understand the choices made: I don’t really have any COMPLAINTS about them, but I do think they fit more into issues with the story than the characters in the tier above them. Aiba doesn’t get much development but she’s still lovely, Amame spends a lot of the story quiet and traumatized even though I ADORE her and every way she’s written when we actually get to know her, but I wish we saw more of her and other characters other than Gen... Bibi has to do with the whole Mizuki twist even if Bibi herself is perfect pre-mask removal... I don’t have a ton of issues with her tbh, it’s just (hand waves) that stuff dealt damage to Mizuki’s character development, you know? And Shoma, I know why the whole genetic experiments on him making him immortal thing happened, I don’t have any issue with it, but it’s still like. that was for the plot twist huh! To keep him looking 12!
I don’t like you but I like your writing: Self explanatory. They’re good villains.
There were some... INTERESTING choices made: No matter my opinion on the character themself, I think their writing in AINI has a major flaw of some kind. for Boss it’s her turning on Mizuki in Gen+Amame route, for Date it’s his lack of a connection with Mizuki and the second memory loss which wasn’t great imo, Mama... I don’t have much to say tbh I don’t understand her role as a “let’s supernaturally send the protags to somewhere” character, same with So, he’s just??? has another serial killer child??????? Okay!!! Gen being in love with Amame was Bad even if I otherwise love him, Kizuna should’ve gotten time away from Lien, Lien shouldn’t have been stalker-y to Kizuna, and Riichi... again, I just don’t Care. Which isn’t a bad thing, I guess. He serves his role.
You were just a bg chara tbh: They didn’t appear much. Their writing is fine for what it is, except that I fuckingggg hate Moma for being like that to Iris
And finally... Mizuki... I don’t like the adoption retcon :’))) I would’ve been FINE with the genetic experiment thing, just not the adoption thing. Also, I wish they focused more on her relationship with Date, we didn’t get enough of her motivation, since her motivation (separate from Bibi) WAS because Date disappeared because of the HB case... Mizuki is fine when she’s there, but narratively she deserved better.

So I just finished my first route of AI The Somnium Files Nirvana Initiative (the Shoma/Komeji route).
More than anything what struck me is how Uchikoshi has gotten to focusing on healing from grief, and especially on recovering from deeply unhealthy coping strategies that end up making things even worse. I can't speak for his earliest work, but this was not a theme at all in any of the Zero Escape games, and only very incidentally a part of Punch Line - but it was the main point of Akanesasu Shoujo, a major part of certain routes of AI 1 (specifically Mayumi's Somnium), and it's ALL OVER Nirvana Initiative. Right at the beginning there's Ryuki drowning himself to forget the past, and at the end there's everything Shoma is dealing with, complete with constructing a whole new imagined world where nothing negative exists (hi again, Akanesasu Shoujo). I have to wonder what's been going on in Uchikoshi's life, or who he's been talking to. I do know that this exact kind of lesson has really helped me recently with my own psychological problems. Someone tell Uchikoshi to hurry up and come to the US so I can get him to autograph a poster.
As for the rest of AINI - the characters are likeable as usual, though they currently feel a little less grounded - it's funny that Gen, who looks like some kind of cartoon baseball man, feels more subtle and down-to-earth than most of them. I'm also hoping there'll be more scenes six years in the future, because even though I do like Ryuki, Mizuki is the GOAT, and her new design is really good. Actually, all the character designs are really good, including Shigure the obligatory MILF and Riichi the rich asshole.
The Somniums (Somnia?) don't feel as engaging as in the original. Maybe that makes sense thematically - a lot of them are very linear with no real puzzles, which might be more like someone's consciousness than trying to figure out which items to use on which part of a room. But, like, even so, I never actually failed a Somnium in AI1, and the game seems overly careful about giving you hints, which makes it slightly less fun. My favorite of them so far was easily Chikara's with its vaporwave aesthetic and ability-combining machine.
I also absolutely love the soundtrack that plays in Shoma's room during this route. It's incredibly cozy while also being a bit sad. The GOAT music from the original was definitely the one from the shrine, and it makes a couple appearances here, but Ryuki isn't especially drawn to that location the way Date was, so it doesn't feel as emotional.
Oh, and I guess I should finish by guessing a few things? Well, Kizuna looks an awful lot like Boss, who supposedly has an 18-year-old daughter... actually, there’s a lot of missing children in this game, like Ryuki’s brother, Shoma’s sister, Shigure’s child, and so on. Iris should be thankful she figured out all of that parental identity nonsense last installment. I feel like if this game has a major twist the way AI1 did, it might well be that there are two parallel worlds colliding, and some characters are from each one. It was kind of a silly gag, but there was that question Gen and Amame were arguing about with Liberty Island/Ellis Island. I feel like maybe we’ll find out that Gen in one timeline doesn’t actually know Shigure and NAIX, but Gen in the other is connected to it - stuff like that. Something related to that might be why Shigure was supposedly thinking of nothing the first time Ryuki examined her - she wasn’t actually present in her body at the time. It helps when you seem emotionless by default.
Also, apologies for calling the head of NAIX “Shigure”, but I completely forget her first name and don’t want to look it up because spoilers. Needless to say, I’ve been playing the game with Japanese VAs, and Tomoyo Kurosawa is a good enough reason for me to do that. If I could switch to English for the silly idol songs, though, I wouldn’t mind.
Anyway, I’ll be going on to the next route either today or tomorrow. Hoping it involves more good music and mind-shattering revelations.

alriiighty, we’re up to split chikara 2: electric boogaloo!
ouch, kizzy. spinal cord injuries are no fun
WHAT does shoma’s timeskip appearance look like. i’m scared. did he get twinkified. is this why we haven’t seen his design yet. we’ve seen the rest of the cast did mr uchikoshi want to hold off on it until we could be caught unawares. i mean realistically he probably hasn’t shown because he’s being murdered but.
so if i understand this right, chikara put his kid up for adoption to a friend---so no aioen stuff. but this is weird because masked woman implies the kid died.
the numbers are just slightly off for it to be jin, and genny makes the most sense here, but WHY is he supposed to be dead? gmo shit i’m guessing???
like 90% of this is just piecing together who was adopted by who. fun lil logic puzzle.
my running masked woman theory---she’s kizzy’s OG big sis, and was adopted by boss
genny--chikara and tokiko’s kid. adopted by some random person, i guess? this does NOT explain why masked woman says he passed.
jin--so’s kid. the aioen missing child, as well. MOST LIKELY candidate for tearer.
again, my jin theory relies a lot on this continued narrowing of the net. kizzy is unlikely now due to SCI (and she’d need a body double), and lien is dumb. i’m tentatively crossing off iris and ota because they’re minor characters here. this leaves us with what, riichi? mame? gen? shoma? gen requires a body double, and riichi’s whole shitck worrying about kizzy is at odds with tearer’s cathedral kidnapping thing. shoma is......shoma. of the alive people, gen is most likely because we can parse a motive via him being tokiko’s kid.
everybody always goes “people go missing due to the NI video” bitch did they or didn’t they. i think right now it’s the real deal.
that DOES beg the question of who the OG jin’s body was if he’s tearer......the most likely solution is he overwrote HIS dna so he could appear as the victim BUT that’s such a close answer to the first game, so i don’t like that answer that much.

Hey Sensei, Don’t You Know? (Japanese Drama, 2019)
Tumblr media
This 6 episode, 24 minute series is from Japan, Adapted from the manga series "Ne-e sensei, shiranai no?”.
Tumblr media
Hanai Ao is a romance manga author dedicated to her craft. So much so, she has never had a boyfriend and her appearance is lacking because she is always so into her work. She takes a walk and finds herself at a salon where she meet stylist Riichi who gives her a makeover that boosts he confidence in work and in romance. The two start to date, but Hanai is quick to shit her new man out when it is time to work. The story of their relationship unfolds even with some supporting would be love interests along the way.
Tumblr media
Feelings, oh my feelings. I’m just here for the eye candy that is Eiji Akaso. The female lead is so clueless you want to beat her about the head. The male lead is so ugh you are over it. You really are here just to look at Eiji Akaso in the end. Rewatch value is low because by the time you are done rewatching it you ask yourself why did I watch that again. Then you remember your answer…EIJI AKASO. 5/10.
Tumblr media
Music is Japanese pop, in rotation but not my favorite.
Eiji Akaso, I’ll see you again in Cherry Magic! ❤️🍒🪄

46: Nee Sensei, Shiranai no?
Tumblr media
At first, all I thought about this drama was, cute, unrealistic but cute. A guy like Riichi doesn't exist outside of a manga/drama. But looking back, I realized why he was so seemingly perfect, why he so willingly tolerated that Hanai forgot about him while working, that she didn't respond to his messages, that she let him wait for hours...
Because while Riichi was building his own career, he did exactly that to his own girlfriends. He simply didn't have time for them and they interpreted it as him not caring but he did, he just had million other things on his mind trying to make something of himself. So he knew the truth and he was willing to go on a limb, be patient and wait for Hanai to reach success. Until then, he would be there to support her.
Also, I loved that there were no jealous backstabbers. The guy who liked Hanai and the actress who like Riichi, they accepted that they had no chance and moved on while staying friends with the object of their erstwhile desire. I thought that was really nice.
Rating: 8/10

ALSO ONE MORE THING LOL, headcanons on a crossover au horror movie night?
This ended up really long but I hope you love it!! It's also probably because it's headcanons which I really live for. BUT ALSO YES OF COURSE I LIVE FOR THE CROSSOVER AU AND ALSO FOR HALLOWEEN!! All Zeta characters belong to Emi, FOLLOW @zetacomic !! Miho also was made by @polar-stars !! Isao was made by @nightcrownsking!! Stan them
Movie Picking
-Zuro sets out a whole bunch of movies, ranging from mockumentary horror films to you wouldn't be able to sleep for a week horror films on the table.
-Shoya is set on watching JAWS series. He wants to see his family win. Zuro adds one movie to the list because it was his bro's request.
-Haru comes in, SHE PICKS A MOVIE. She doesn't realize she's scarier than the movie marathon that is coming, but well- her choice will be included. Or else she will be angry. No one wants her angry. Ayame approves on her choice and recommends a movie. Zuro places her recommendation away. Ayame was never best to pick one unless it was romance movies.
-TAI AND MAI SAY THEY WANT MURDER ON SCREEN. Their sugesstion? Accepted. There was a slasher horror, which did include murder. They would probably enjoy it that day.
-Izami tosses a few recommendations. He picks the one with the horror that pulls on the most heartstrings yet still scares the crap out of people. Suggestion accepted.
-Isao gives a movie. Immediately burned by Sepheir. She does not trust this man.
-So far they have one Jaws movie, a film Haru wanted, slasher horror and an angsty horror movie. Seems good enough. They will be watching from 6-3, but people can choose to sleep earlier (if they can after that).
Movie Preparation
-Ko spends SO MUCH. Chips, Sodas, Full blown Meals, Popcorn, Cotton Candy, Everything--- For EVERYONE. He splits them all evenly and everyone has their personal food and drink box.
-Makoto is SURPISED over how much things he bought without thinking... He shouldn't spend his money like this! But it was for Zygos and Protezioni... but still! That's carelessly using money!
-Makoto gives him a good talk
-Yuuki is lowkey anxious over the movie choices but Asuka ends up comforting him and calming him down. Tells him that Big Sis Asuka is always there! Yuuki calms down fairly well!
-Yuri is watching Shigure cry even before the movie starts. She's calling him a dumbass and tells him it hasn't started yet. Turns our Shigure was crying over something else and she facepalms.
-Romano is hugging his paperwork but Hide is trying to tell him to relax for once and let it go. He follows for once and believes in her words. She says it is best to let himself not do work since Halloween only happens once a year. He is very convinced.
-Ace is worried if the kids can handle it, but he prepares a comfort blanket in advanced in case any of them want to go under one later. There are 10 comfort blankets with stuffed toys under it. Tsukki helps in gathering pillows.
-The movie marathon starts.
Movie Watching
-Jaws was the first to come.
-All of Zygos turn their head to Shoya. Protezioni proceeds to do the same.
-"I wanted to see my fellow scalys."
"THIS DOESN'T FIT THE ATMOSPHERE, SHITHEAD"
"Jun, your temper is worse than your height"
"YOU PIECE OF SHIT"
-Eis tries to calm Junko down, Zuro laughs about the whole thing. Fortunato facepalms and tells them to calm the fuck down. Maemi knew this would happen. He is very tired. Kaito tries to stop them.
-Anyway Jaws was being watched by several other people. Kuro thoughts the sharks were dolphins. "Dudeeee, they're sharks? I thought sharks were bigger." "THOSE ARE WHALES, KURO"
-Kana is laughing her ass off at this moment, Ren makes a dramatic speech in the middle "Oh whale, oh shark, what is your true reflection-" Shima is so done with this shit. What's worse- the speech or the movie? Shinji talks about how different everyone's aura is because of one single movie.
-Tilear is too busy snickering over Team Omega to focus, she is enjoying. Izami is actually watching the movie. Asks Oliviero if his fang was close to a shark's. Oliviero said he was more of cub or something. Ko wants them to be quiet so he could watch the film. They don't become quiet.
-Haru is excited. She says she brought up the next movie! Everyone is wondering what she picked. It turns out to be a psychological horror! They did not expect this, but the movie was fine.
-Kaito SCREAMS when he sees something happens, he is seeking for hug. For comfort. He cannot handle this. Aki decides to hug him and comfort him. They go to the comfort blankets.
-Tsuyobi jumps off the couch when something happens, Mitsu is the one who takes care of a shaking Tsuyobi. Hoping he is is okay.
-Alderardo names everything wrong with the film because it's a psychological horror and not a lot of things makes sense. Haru yells at him to shut up. He shuts up. Tana is glad he was able to shut the fuck up. Wants to thank Haru for that.
-Masao feels like an undefeated entity because he didn't back out in the movie unlike Kaito. HE WAS THE SUPERIOR LEADER. THE BRAVER LEADER. THE--- Kaya tells him to stop being like that and just sit down and enjoy the movie. Masao ends up sitting down and watching the movie.
-Anzu is clinging to Hide, Hide allows her to cling to her. Eis is clinging to Ella, who looks around but awkwardly pats Eis's back. Team 2 is making a theory silently because they are the most observant team. ALL THEIR THEORIES WERE PROVEN RIGHT.
-Miho comes in out of nowhere, a smile on her face, a flashlight underneath her. "Tea?" EVERYONE THOUGHT SHE LOOKED LIKE A GHOST. Turns out Ami was holding the flashlight below her. She is now officially dubbed as the tea ghost. She looked like one of the characters.
-The next is the slasher film the Murder Twins chose. THEY BOTH BRING UP MURDER. Riichi looks interested, he brings up he learned some sneaky moves through this movie! A lot of people look at them and see them as a very dangerous group if they worked together.
-Yuuki does get anxious over some parts, but Asuka is there to comfort him. Yarohe ends up being his comfort teddy bear. Ko just silently watches the rest to see how they are doing.
-Bren and Tilear have a small discussion because there is a lot of things to talk about since there are weapons in it. Tilear asks Yuuki about a question about his gun and says he doesn't need to feel anxious because he'd be able to shoot the man with no problem. Asuka pats the back of Yuuki who is internally screaming because someone believes in his skill.
-Marmi ends up gathering notes and he sees how Riichi was able to use these notes for something. Celes predicts what's happens next, saying it was a common strategy that is found in horror films. Calls the cast dumb and she isn't surprised that they are dying.
-The strategists talk about something together and make the best plan to escape if they ever end up in a situation like that. Their plan is the best plan ever created and if they were in a horror movie, they will 10000000% survive. Celes, Hide, Maemi, Miho and Shinji were a group who'd never die in a horror film.
-Ami mentions things that could have happened and says she would be a better murderer than the main antagonist of the slasher film. The stealth experts agree with her. Kiyaru also brings that up and Team 2 all agree with her. Bernando says he would fight the antagonist and win. The whole team 4 agrees. Akira comments about how unrealistic it is and the cops are doing a horrible job, brings up both Zygos and Protezioni are way better than the cops. Says the cops are useless in the movie.
-The talk is about murder and how they survive. The movie was overall enjoyable though and it was a great slasher film. There were holes to it, but the Murder Twins loved the blood.
-Okay now was the horror film that had the most emotional scenes. Kaito goes out of the comfort blanket, and Izami gives a small warning that it gets pretty sad. Sepheir comments she knows the film and it does get pretty sad. Everyone knows it's seriously shit sad when Sepheir says that.
-The horror parts were scary as fuck. People jumped from their seats. Kaito wanted to hide again and he screamed again. He is not the best with horror movies. Ayame comments about how this was really disturbing and Hiyaro agrees with her comments. Junko says if she saw a face like that, she's stab the fucker.
-Okay but when the sad parts come? PEOPLE BEGIN CRYING. Kaito starts bawling his eyes out instead of screaming and the whole Zetas decided to comfort their leader. Anzu starts tearing up and Hide tries to cheer her up but yells at Izami for showing that movie. Izami yells back that he warns them. Shigure is crying so bad and Yuri awkwardly comforts him but he just cries even louder. Aki is crying and Allen is in panic. Rika is silently crying and Akira is just allowing her to lean on him.
-It ends up with people crying because of fear or because of sadness. Shoya laughs at some parts and no one knows why he laughs. "LOOK HE DIED" "It isnT FUNNY SHO" "IT WAS IN A STUPID WAY" "SHO"
-Mitsu cries and the whole Zeta is prepared to fight whoever made Mitsu cry. It turns out it was the film. It's just that emotional.
-Movie night ends after the whole roller coaster ride of emotions
-A lot end up sleeping in the living room. Reo and Namito were actually busy doing trick or treating and they slept early like the good kids they are! They wake up to this sight and wonder what happened! Good children through and through.

Going Out to Enjoy Life Again After 2020
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Many of you may know that I’ve been on a mahjong playing journey for a while now. I decided to take a venture out in person (twice) to meet up with a fully-vaccinated group of riichi mahjong players called Riichi Nomi NYC in my area. It was a lot of fun and I got to meet people I’ve played with online.
I still can’t help but shake off some anxiety as RiichI Nomi were the only ones that made me go “Okay, let’s have some fun.” when no other group (or even my closest friends) made me want to go out. Not even Otakon 2021 made me go “Anime con happening with a decent level of safety, let’s go~”
I now wonder what is my connection to the anime community as a whole. I’ve always considered myself to be in the middle. Now, that connection is more or less “I don’t keep up with most anime anymore.” I still am connected to the manga community on both the professional and fan side of things. I’m very active in talking about manga and mahjong (and Japanese video games to a certain extent) in various chat channels.
I think about mahjong fandom and it’s made me go “Maybe it’s because corporations haven’t taken a huge stake in it and that’s why I’ve really enjoyed my time here.” A lot of fandom discourse is weaponized by corporations and media outlets these days. It drives me nuts that excessive consumption seems to be the only thing that matters and is used as the only outlet to process life’s BS. I still believe that anime did save my life at one point and I believe that anime doesn’t really serve me much anymore.
On another note, being around a group of people made me miss social interactions in person. I’ve seen the multiple convention reports about Otakon 2021 and it feels like the start of something good again when safety is heavily emphasized. There was one passage in this report from Daryl Surat (a long-time expert on anime) that said it all for me,
“Was it too early for big fan conventions to return? Personally, even despite having been vaccinated for months, I felt a little uneasy in the crowds once I realized Otakon 2021 wouldn’t be 50% of the usual size. But truth be told, I was far more concerned about being in the airport or inside of a restaurant than I was about being at Otakon even at its most congested.“
After a year and 5 months of almost always staying home, I felt somewhat okay being around people again (when safety is emphasized). It’s tiring to think of people as vectors for diseases as I honestly think most people are trying their best out there.
Speaking of being around people, I’m sympathetic towards the kids who want to go school, but whose parents are flipping out over measures that are trying to ensure safety for everyone. I read an article earlier this year about kids resorting to suicide during the pandemic due to not being able to see their friends/peers. Adults shouldn’t be the only ones who get the chance to connect with others in person again.
I know we’re not out of the woods yet, but if you’re someone who wants to see a friend living near you in person and you’re all taking the right safety measures, you don’t have to feel guilty or ashamed about it. Go and see them.
There’s still a lot of beauty alongside the darkness of the outside world. I’m already realizing that lesson and it’s one that (hopefully) will last longer than the time I spent in home and the pandemic itself for the better. I hope the same applies to you all.

Why, of all the hard and difficult things my brain could latch on to, did it have to be riichi mahjong? If I could have the same dedication to suffering in order to get better in any other skill, I would be golden!
Instead I’m playing a fucking gambling game that I suck at, can’t gamble at, and probably can’t even play seriously because I’m not Japanese.
