Sick Day Off
read on ao3 here!
“101.9 degrees,” Trey said, sitting on the bed and gently patting the lump of blankets on it. “I’m sorry, Riddle.”
“Mm… ‘s not your fault, Trey. It’s alright,” Riddle mumbled, throwing the blankets over his head. “Ugh. And on a day I thought I’d be able to get all my work done…”
“Don’t you dare think about work right now.”
“But…”
“Riddle, you can barely get out of bed as it is. What you need to do right now, more than anything, is rest. I know you feel like you have to be productive, but it’s alright to have some downtime. I’ll go get you something to eat, ok?” Riddle hesitated but nodded soon after, and Trey smiled at him before leaving the room.
As soon as the door clicked shut, he immediately tossed the blankets off himself, hissing at the rush of cold air, and swung his legs off the side in an attempt to get up. The redhead stumbled towards his desk, grabbing the edge of it to steady himself, and slumped into the chair with a sigh of relief. He grabbed his alchemy notes from within a stack of books, and was just about to begin studying them when he heard the door slam open.
“Dorm head,” Ace called, striding through the door. Riddle instinctively froze, hoping that if he stayed still, the other boy wouldn’t notice him at his desk. “So I know you’re sick and you probably don’t want anyone around, but- oi, I thought Trey-senpai said you weren’t supposed to do work!”
The redhead sighed, knowing it was futile to try and hide. “I’m just looking through my alchemy notes, Ace. I assure you it’s nothing too grueling. And when did Trey tell you that?”
“When he told me to go check up on you! Because in his words, ‘I’m sure Riddle’s already at his desk’ or something like that, so it’s back to bed for you, dorm head!” Ace stepped over to the desk and quickly scooped Riddle up in his arms, the smaller boy squeaking in surprise.
“A-Ace! What do you think you’re doing?!”
“Carrying you to bed! You look like you’ll keel over if you walk another step, and then Trey-senpai’ll really get on my case about this.”
Riddle felt his face growing hot, though he didn’t know whether it was from the fever or from his close proximity to Ace. “I’m not that weak! And how do you think I got to my desk in the first place?”
“Not important, because you shouldn’t be working!” Ace reached the side of the bed, and he smirked devilishly. “Alright, here we go! Up, two-”
Riddle’s eyes widened, already realizing what was going to happen. “If you dare throw me-”
“Too late! Three!” Ace unceremoniously tossed the redhead, who disappeared into the pile of blankets with a soft oomph. “That wasn’t too bad, right?”
Riddle’s head popped out of the blanket mound, dazed from the impact but glaring at him all the same. “I can’t believe you actually threw me. I should have your head for this.”
“Ahaha, I’m sorry, I’m sorry! Look, I’ll tuck you in as an apology!” Ace kicked his shoes off and hopped onto bed, gently covering Riddle in blankets and pillows. “And now you have an incentive to stay in bed, cause the more times you get out, the harder I’ll throw you back! Don’t worry, I’ll make sure you won’t get hurt.”
“Hmph. Well, I suppose that’s one way to keep me here, seeing as I’m only asking for trouble if I leave. Still, it feels… wrong to just be sitting here when I have a perfectly good pile of work right on my desk.”
“...your mother made you study while you were sick?”
“Yes. Despite being a magical healer, she never gave me any time off, and even if I was ill, she’d diagnose me herself and then dismiss it. I couldn’t waste a single day over something as trivial as that, and over time, it became natural for me to study no matter how sick I felt.”
“That’s seriously messed up! Some kind of healer she is. But your mother isn’t here, and you’re the dorm head, so you can do whatever you want, y’know? If you’re bored just sitting around, you could always play a card game with me!”
“Very well. You’re going to have to teach me how to play though.”
“Of course! Lemme just-” Ace pulled a pack of cards out of his pocket with a flourish, and looked inside it. “Argh, that idiot Deuce must’ve switched ‘em again! These are Uno cards, not actual cards.”
“I don’t mind playing Uno.” The redhead sniffed and sank deeper into the blankets, sparing a glance towards his alchemy notebook. “It’s better than just sitting here, and seeing as you won’t let me out, I have no other choice.”
“Heh, if you really say so.” Ace shot the cards from one hand to the other with a grin and split the deck, Riddle gazing with wonder. “So, here’s the rules of this…”

Trey stirred the soup again, giving it a brief taste test before humming in approval. Turning the flame off, he picked his phone up and sent a brief message to Ace, his magic already opening the cupboards and setting a bowl on the counter.
“Cater, would you mind washing some strawberries for me? They should be on the bottom shelf of the fridge,” Trey said. “And Deuce, please get a food tray from one of the bottom drawers.”
“Of course, vice dorm head!” Deuce exclaimed, shooting up from his seat. “I’ll have it for you right away!”
“Last I checked, Trey, strawberries and soup don’t exactly go together,” Cater chuckled.. Then his face grew horrified, slamming his phone down as he stared at Trey. “W-wait, is this payback for that one time Riddle-kun tried to make you soup?! You’re gonna cook like Lilia?!”
“Of course not! And this isn’t payback either, even if that soup was a bit questionable… anyway, it’s just that Riddle looked so miserable to be bedridden, and usually I’d give him a strawberry tart to cheer him up. But with his condition, I don’t think I should give him any cake, so he’ll just have to settle with the fruit itself.”
“Ehe, that’s sweet of you! I’ll get started right away, then~” Cater opened the fridge, quickly finding the container of strawberries, and Deuce held a tray up victoriously before handing it to Trey. Trey nodded in thanks, then glanced at his phone as he heard a small ping!
DMs: Ace
Trey: How’s Riddle doing? Not working, I trust?
Ace: oh he was looking over his alchemy notes or smth
Ace: emphasis on was though! he’s in bed now
Trey: Did he make you type that?
Ace: nope! i mean it
Ace: look he’s playing a card game with me
Ace sent a picture.
Trey opened the image, and he was greeted with the sight of Riddle buried in blankets, laughing with a handful of cards floating in front of him.
Trey: Looks good. Thanks again.
Ace: no prob!
“Ehh, are Ace-chan and Riddle-kun playing Uno? That looks like fun,” Cater exclaimed as he popped up behind Trey with a bowl of strawberries. “C’mon, Deuce-chan! We gotta catch ‘em before the next game! See ya there, Trey~”
“W-wait, Cater-senpai, should we really be-” Deuce didn’t get any further as Cater grabbed his hand and ran off towards Riddle’s room. Trey chuckled as he loaded the tray with food and followed suit.
~-~-~-~-~
“That’s another win for me,” Ace chuckled, placing his final card down.
“I swear you’re cheating, but I have no clue how,” Riddle grumbled, pouting as he set the rest of his cards down. “You’re too good at this.”
“You’ll get it eventually! Down for another round, dorm head?”
“Not without us~!” Cater burst through the door happily, Deuce trailing behind him, and Trey came soon after with the tray of food. “Hiya, Riddle-kun!”
“Please don’t tell me you all came here just to make sure I wasn’t working,” Riddle sighed exasperatedly, smiling at them.
“That was part of the reason,” Trey said, placing the tray of food on Riddle’s bedside table. “I know you got up to work as soon as I left the room earlier, even though I told you not to.” The redhead flinched, tearing his gaze away from his childhood friend. “But you’re breaking that habit by letting yourself rest now, so it’s fine. Small steps, remember?”
“Right… thank you, everyone. I’m glad you’re all here with me.”
“We’re your friends, dorm head! Can’t get rid of us that easily,” Ace sang, slinging one arm across Riddle’s shoulder. “Let’s start another game, yeah?”
“Oh no, I am not playing a card game with you again, Ace! You definitely cheated last time,” Deuce exclaimed, pointing accusingly at him.
“If we all make sure to watch carefully, I’m sure Ace wouldn’t dare of cheating.” Trey smirked as he pushed his glasses back, but his gaze softened as he turned to look at the redhead. “Ah, make sure to eat your food, Riddle.”
“And there’s Trey’s soft spot for Riddle-kun,” Cater snickered as Ace dealt the cards with a roll of his eyes.
“I think I’ll sit this one out, actually. Trey went to such trouble to make this for me and I do need to eat if I want to get better…” Riddle grinned darkly, glancing at Ace. “And of course I need to keep an eye on my dear first-year to make sure he doesn’t cheat.”
“Jeez, you’re scary sometimes, dorm head… no cheating on my end, promise!”
Riddle popped the last strawberry into his mouth and watched in amusement as Trey and Cater glared at each other above their cards. Deuce had given up on winning early on, shuffling his massive hand of cards back into the deck, and by a stroke of unfortunate luck, Ace had also been forced out of the game. “Scared to put your cards down, Cater? This is hardly a game of strategy, you know,” Trey said, grinning smugly.
“And reveal my hand to you so soon? That’s super uncool,” Cater shot back. He placed a card down in the middle, contributing to the large stack already there. “Uno. Your move~”
Trey looked over his remaining two cards and put one down. “Uno. I know for a fact you don’t have a card of this color or number.”
“Tch… you don’t have to monologue, y’know! But I can still turn this around if I get lucky!” Cater drew from the deck and beamed as he immediately placed it down. “Ha! Uno, again.”
“Turn this game around? And that’s where you’re wrong.” Trey slapped his last card onto the pile with a victorious smirk. “My last card was a +4. I win.”
“You really had to put the nail in the coffin like that, didn’t you,” Riddle laughed, glancing at his friend.
“I-incredible! I couldn’t even tell that Trey-senpai had such an advantage,” Deuce gushed, eyes wide with wonder.
“Ah, you’re harsh, Trey~ not even holding back for your friends!”
“Heh, what can I say? I like card games. Now let’s give Riddle some time to rest, alright? I’ll give you a rematch in the lounge if you want, Cater.”
“It’s a deal then! See ya, Riddle-kun!” The four of them got up, waving goodbye as they headed out the door, and Riddle laid down, but just as Ace was about to leave, the redhead called out to him.
“Ace. Could I talk to you please?”
Ace turned back, grinning and closing the door behind him. “Course! Whatcha need, dorm head?”
“Do you know the best emergency treatment for someone suffering from hypothermia?”
A beat of silence passed, and Ace’s smile quickly changed into a confused expression. “Uh… what? Dorm head, why would you be asking me something like that?”
“So it’s a no. Well then, allow me to educate you. If there isn’t any help readily available, the best course of action is to lie down next to the affected person and share body heat with them through bodily contact.” When Ace blinked confusedly at him, Riddle sighed and held his arms out, blushing as he turned away from the other boy. “I’m cold.”
“Oh, if you wanted to cuddle, you should’ve just said so! One warm, toasty hug, coming right up!” Ace slid into the blankets beside Riddle and tucked the smaller boy under his chin, arms holding the redhead against his chest. “There. Warm enough?”
“Mhm. Thank you.”
“Sure you don’t have hypothermia anymore?”
“Shut up, Ace.”
~-~-~-~-~
Ace wasn’t sure when he’d fallen asleep but when he woke, the room was dark, moonlight flowing through the window. For a minute, he considered going back to sleep, but that thought disappeared right as Riddle suddenly shifted and rammed an elbow into his chest. Groaning in pain, Ace sat up and was about to gently push Riddle off him when the redhead started shaking.
Ace froze, his hand hovering above the smaller boy, and he could only watch as Riddle tossed back and forth, frantically mumbling words with tears falling from his eyes. “Please… please don’t hurt them, mother,” Riddle whispered, sobs wracking his body. Then he froze, arms and legs going stiff. “No… no! I’m sorry, I’m sorry! Don’t hurt them, mother, don't hurt the others! Please, I… I'll do whatever you want!”
Ace, realizing that the other boy was having a nightmare, immediately started shaking him. “H-hey, dorm head! Riddle! Listen to me, ok? Wherever you are in your dreams, it’s not real! So you have to come back to me, and wake up!”
At that, Riddle’s eyes snapped open, breathing heavily as his eyes darted around the room. “A dream…” Finally, his gaze settled on Ace, and Riddle launched himself into the other boy with a broken sob. “Th-thank the Seven… you’re alive!”
Ace held onto Riddle tightly, gently rubbing circles on the other’s back. “I’m here, I'm here. Don't worry, ok? I'm alright.” He kissed the top of the smaller boy’s head and hugged him closer. “Do you wanna talk about it a little?”
“...my mother came to our dorm during an Unbirthday party and she started attacking a-all of you, and when you tried to say no to her, she launched the rosebushes at you just like I did except Trey wasn’t there to stop it and y-you…”
“I hope you know it’ll take a lot more than a few rosebushes to kill me, dorm head!” Riddle opened his mouth to speak, but Ace shushed him and continued. “And before you say anything about what happened before your Overblot, I forgive you for it, ok? You’re a much better person now and besides, I’m clearly not dead.”
“I… I see. Thank you.”
“Anytime. Go back to sleep, yeah? You’re still sick, and I’d rather not have Trey-senpai yelling at me first thing in the morning.”
“Alright. Thank you again. For… everything.”
Ace laid back in bed, dragging the redhead down with him. “No prob! G’night, Riddle.”
“Goodnight, Ace.” Riddle closed his eyes, letting the sound of soft breathing calm him, but he opened his eyes again as he realized that Ace had called him by his name. Despite the emphasis he usually put on his dorm head title, Riddle found that he really didn’t mind, and his chest grew warm as he smiled and closed his eyes.
