welcome the the tenth fic rec friday! where, on friday, i rec five of my favourite fics.
1. i was always yours (even before you knew it) by paladarns
Lance thought Keith was just an asshole. Lance has always thought of Keith as an asshole, all throughout traveling into space in a large mechanical lion, all throughout bonding moments. All throughout becoming closer as teammates and friends.
Even now, with his hands pinned above his head and Keith’s thighs straddling his waist, Lance thinks Keith is an asshole.
Lance had always thought he could see right through people, but now he’s starting to think he has a bad judgement of people.

Keith has never loved someone like he loves Lance. Lance is his sun, his stars, his happiness. Their hands fit together like they were created to do nothing but hold each other, and he fits perfectly inside of Lance's arms. But he can never let anyone find out how much he loves this boy, how wholly and endlessly. Who knows what the Galra would do with that kind of information?
One morning, the lie comes crashing down around them.
Maybe it won't be as bad as they feared.

It was funny at first. Their arguments became more banter than actual disagreements, yet the entire team continued to assume they were at each other’s throats.
And Lance knows they’re not. He is fully aware that every sharp word, every sly smirk, every heavy handed push, and everything in between is anything but malicious.
But that doesn’t mean he doesn’t miss the softer side of things.
Or, Lance and Keith are in a secret relationship, but honestly want to omit the 'secret' part.

So maybe, just maybe, Pidge was right. Maybe, just maybe, Keith had shot himself in the foot with his first attempt at resolving the blanket-hogging situation, because now Lance seemed to think it was a game and the rules were: steal the blankets, get sex.
To be fair, Keith hadn't exactly been...dissuading him very well.
okay so heres how this works. every fic rec friday so far has been from a specific collection of mine called ‘rereadables’, which was literally started because of this fic. i dont even know what specific part of this fic gets to me so hard, but you know when you read something that makes your stomach go all swoopy? and you can’t stop smiling? thats this fic! i remember i finished it for the first time and then i scrolled right back up to the top and read it again, then again, and again. like i cannot get over this fic. it gives me butterflies every time

Or: a malfunction with a healing pod leaves Lance able to speak only Spanish for a few days.
the idea of lance getting stuck in spanish and then almost immediately using that to flirt with keith without him knowing. like. i love that SO much that is quite possibly one of the funniest concepts to exist

Don't wanna seem like a super pro aiart person cause it mostly pisses me off. but most posts against it have a lot of really weird or even concerning implications about intellectual property. Like. As someone who has made art and sold and purchased from others and learned from others tutorials (bought and free) I have some strong feelings on the matter.
Although I'm not versed enough in ai tech or legal things to have any idea of a perfect solution, it feels like just another thing where the true villain is capitalism. Like the real issues are people's time and effort being cashed out by someone else, losing potential market for their work. And generally having to constantly balance their art with livelihood, which very rarely is going to be enriching as opposed to detrimental.
Like yeah even without money and therefore livelihood in the game, there'd still be issues of people copying/stealing "ideas", although that's a whole mess even without AI involved. Personally if it doesn't require exploitation, I feel like the more art and creation the better.
And then the kind of weird issue that makes it hard to agree with pre written opinions is that a lot of people believe this when AI isn't involved--eveb contrasting it by saying its ok when real people learned the skills over time. But then start going into how the difference is a "soul", and the creators are just annoying rich "tech bros" and not creators themselves. Somehow ai is innately predatory and self controlled but not sentient, the ones who make and upkeep them are just collecting robbed riches as they pour in. Or people calling everyone dumbasses if they put pictures that already exist online into some ai app like we haven't already had "upload your picture to see what you look like as a baby" equivalents forever. And these aren't exactly much better outcome wise LOL.
Idk it's not like I dont think there's gonna be predatory and exploit(atory?) AI art issues, or that the programmers (and probably moreso companies they work for) aren't working without care for the effect on artists. Kinda weird when people try to make the problem some innate "this can never be used in a good way bc humans have souls" type argument. When the technology making AI art almost definitely has potential for good and bad.

Okay, when you were describing all of the things that you would want in the relationship, I thought of San due to how clingy and affectionate he is with the other members of ATEEZ. He is a Cancer, which is good because that is one of the star signs that are compatible with yours. I don't believe that the age difference of four years would be that much of an issue, especially since San acts younger than he is most of the time anyway. I feel like most men are intimidated when their female significant other is tall themselves, but he is tall himself and I feel like the fact that you are taller is kind of one of his favorite things about you? One of his other favorite things about you are your curves, he always puts his hand on your thighs during movie night at the boys' dorm or in the back pocket of your jeans when you two are walking into KQ Entertainment together. When you wear dresses when all of you go out to fancy dinners together, he has to hold himself back because he ADORES you when you wear dresses! You said you're am ambivert, I feel like he relates to that in some form of way, like I feel like there are certain situations where he feels a bit more introverted about. Sometimes Hongjoong has to scold him because he texts you so much, but he can't stay mad at you when you pop into the building with their favorite Starbucks drinks and hand-made lunch boxes for them. Just as you always support his creative endeavors, he always returns it for you tenfold and when you are talking about issues you care deeply about, he gives you his full attention and stares at you lovingly. Not just San, but all of the boys, come to you whenever they are dealing with stress and they just want someone to talk to because you are so amazing at giving advice and supporting them. There was a time when a sasaeng approached you, San, Wooyoung and Jongho when you were doing some late night grocery shopping when another ATINY stopped her, causing an argument and nasty words to be exchanged. Let's just say, you shut that sasaeng down REAL quick when you heard some of the things she said. One day you woke up and found a present that San made for you, a mixtape of all of your favorite songs from all your favorite genres of music, along with a little keychain that had tokens of all of the states you had visited. He wholeheartedly loves you and he makes every effort to support all of your dreams. When he has days off from work, the two of you make a blanket fort in your living room and watch old episodes of Forensic Files and Law & Order: SVU, whilst surrounded by fluffy blankets and a couple of his favorite plushies. His life an idol doesn't afford him much down time, unfortunately, but he always makes time for you and you always have the craziest adventures with not only each other, but all of the other boys as well. Squishy San will want all of the cuddles, have you SEEN how affectionate he is with the other members?! Also, him in all black outfits.... YES, PLEASE AND THANK YOU. One day he was visiting your apartment and he surprised you with matching beaded pearl bracelets and he never takes it off, not even for performances. The boys don't really think nothing of walking into the bathroom to brush their teeth whilst one of the others is showering, that just comes with their busy schedules and their dorm life. Let's just say this: Mingi wasn't able to look you in the eyes for two weeks because he did just that, not realize that you had snuck in and stayed the night, and were currently going to the bathroom whilst San was in the shower. Your camera roll is not only filled with silly pictures of San that you've captured, but of the most magazine worthy, model pictures you have ever been lucky enough to take. He accepts you for all of your flaws, and helps you to try to work on them, however that may be and you do the same for him.
In summary: You both are simps for each other and I AM HERE FOR IT.

Another tall boy for you, I got you! You both are Virgos, but I looked it up worried that two Virgos would clash, and it said that they would be very intuitive with each other and would understand each other! The age gap is quite large, I don't know how okay you are with that? I know everyone has different preferences. He approached you first when he saw you at the mom & pop coffee shop/cafe around the corner from your apartment, and he thought you were the most beautiful person he had ever seen. Another man who I don't think would be bothered by your curves (men can be shallow dicks), I think that is his favorite thing (same as San) about you. Not even in a sexual way, I feel like his hands would always end up on your butt without him even noticing. Most of the time, one of the other boys will point it out when all of you are hanging out together, and he will be proud that he has a significant other like you, but he almost might become a shy mess about it I feel like. I feel like he can get jealous, just because you are closest to Jungkook in the group and you often pull pranks on the other members together. There is never a shortage of laughs when all of you are together, pure crackhead energy if I've ever seen it, just non stop jokes and banter between all of you. You were able to get time off from work and were actually able to join them (their managers were surprisingly chill about you tagging along? CONFUSION?) on their tour around Europe and you had so many memories. You actually brought along a Polaroid camera that you found in a little store one day when the two of you were shopping, and you ended up having to buy an extra suitcase on the trip because you took LITERAL hundreds of pictures of all of your adventures and the tour shenanigans. He has childish tendencies, I feel like he would love to play Roblox with you? I feel like he would take a very mathematical approach to building things, that's just the vibe I get from him. He often stares at you when you're doing your makeup in the morning, he finds it fascinating and he even asked you to do his makeup for some of his shows. His makeup artists weren't angry, luckily, all of their staffs absolutely adore you two together. He is all up for adventures, I feel like he would chicken out at the idea of skydiving, though lol. You keep stealing his sweaters, which he low-key highkey is SO happy about because he loves the way that you look in them. The size difference is only three or four inches (I've seen people say he's 6 feet, but then others say he's 6 foot 2, WHICH IS IT?!), so it's pretty easy to sneak kisses from him whenever you want them when you're together. If he sees you struggling to stay awake whilst studying, he'll softly close your book and drag you over to your bed for a couple hours so you can take a quick nap to regain the energy. I don't really know his temperament that well, he has to be rather even-tempered to deal with those hooligans he calls the rest of BTS, so I feel like you wouldn't have that many fights. You both are always striving to help each other to be the best versions of each other you can be. You joined the boys on vacation at a lake house and one night you were having dinner and he blushed after you said something cheeky to him, causing you to say to him, "You look like a cute tomato when you blush, my cutie pie." in front of the other members. Needless to say, he turned even more red and the boys teased him mercilessly for the rest of the night. Don't know how the cooking would go (this boy is a DISASTER in the kitchen), but you would have fun learning new dishes. He would brag about getting a dish right, and you quickly praise him but also say, " and that's why you a big ass head.", causing him to die laughing. He is the very definition of a hard worker, and I feel like he would love being praised and doing the same for his significant other, so I'm glad that you said that you liked the words of affirmation love language, because GET READY. He's definitely been buffing up (I SCREAM WHENEVER I SEE PICTURES OF HIM NOWADAYS), so
his hugs would always be the best things, so warm and comforting. Don't know how you feel about children? We've all seen that VLive where this idiot literally bought baby shoes because he thought they were cute, so I think he would definitely want children down the road in your relationship if you were both comfortable with it. Best father and husband award goes to him.

Hanging out with you after a stress filled day and you just kiss the top if his head and talk to him softly and hold him. That's why he loves you

The thing is hes kind of a complicated guy
Like yeah hes shy and all. Because hes insecure because of the other guy + having to keep track of social cues and not trying to sound like an old boring professor and not trying to sound condescending and trying to understand pop cultural references and it's too much at once and gets him frustrated so hed rather stay out of it
But he genuinely is too much in his head. The more mentally isolated he becomes the more he just rominates in his thoughts the more his temper gets short.
Like make no doubt he has anger issues
Genuinely he gets so frustrated with himself and sometimes itll come off as rude or curt
But hes mostly projecting it at himself or his work
That's why he spend hours in the lab. Hes so stubborn and harsh against himself that he won't let himself off the hook.
But is dangerous the more and more he gets in the habit of just being in his own head and critisising himself the more and more he gets distant with everyone else and sometimes rubs ppl the wrong way or comes off as a guy with a major attitude

But you run the risk of an outburst. Hes snapped at coworkers before. Never at you. Most of the time he recognizes "oh this is someone I love and dont want to fuck up a relationship with" and slowly decompresses
Once he comes to his senses is out of his head and calms tf down and stops being mad at himself hes just your big ol teddy
"Hey sorry I didnt mean to be so mean... what's going on?" Small smile on his lips eyes shining because he cherishes you
You roll your eyes because of his mood swings but will soften because you know hes just like that

I cannot lie. He cant be a perfect boy all the time. But think of it this way, hes stubborn and intelligent and self critical and bipolar and his internal mechanism to deal with stress is to turn it into frustration then anger then get big and green and wreck shit. So when hes frustrated with you (usually about you not agreeing with how much he works) he might not want to aquess to you. He might wanna stand his ground and demand you hear his side. Because in that moment hes justified and he knows that he's correct.
And you have to just eventually get that arguing with him won't work hes too stubborn sometimes. If hes arguing its only because its something he thinks it's worth arguing over. Just learn to de-escalate and you'll get him to be reasonable on anything
He can be hella condescending. A guy with 7phds doesn't do so withought thinking hes pretty smart. But you treating him like hes stupid ticks him off. Dont treat him like an idiot.
Or a kid. Just because hes awkward you dont have to use that against him. Teasing him for being a bit antisocial or teasing his bad social skills can be a reason for a real fight to break out.
And it really is a clear escalation you can see how he rises in anger. So most of the time it's easy to spot it, orient yourself and stop it
His social akwardnes is helped by the avengers, people like Tony help him socialise and get outside the lab and talk to people. Tony helps him communicate through difficult problems that usually leave Bruce frustrated with himslef
You and Tony are two pronged. He calls you in when he thinks Bruce needs a break and you entrust Tony with making sure Bruce isn't burning out.
Them being science bros goes deeper then you know. They help each other out. Bruce forces him to collaborate more by covering the things Tony isn't an expert in. And he's a voice of reason in some cases.
Bruce can be very level headed when hes not stuck in his own. He'll tell Tony what's going too far. The only issue is that Tony won't always listen. You and Pepper are about the only two people who can force Tony to listen to Bruce's prudent scienc-y advice
They both respect each other immensely for their intellect. But both can be bull headed. Tony doesn't like working with other because that means he has to admit he isn't really the smartest guy in the room. And Bruce doesn't hate working with others but when he doesn't feel heard or feels used or dejected he can get frustrated and snappy
The fact that you're still around despite all his bad qualities makes you that much more loveable to him.

Also this is gonna be long and I'm on mobile so if you dont wanna read this just hit the J key to skip if you're on desktop. If you're on mobile like me then I guess you're SOL
Anyway up front I'll say tw for emotional manipulation and murder and mutual yandere stuff and such, OD Dan and OD CL (which ill shorten to ODan and OCL) are super not great people
So most of the story CL and I have very lovingly developed takes place in high school, so that's where I'll start
OCL started a program to reform troubled teens and only told ODan about it bc she wanted an excuse to hang out with him
She's the daughter of the principal or at least a relative of someone who donates a lot of money to the school so they let her do p much whatever she wants, including this
She uses his status as a troubled teen to her advantage though
He'll steal someone's lunch money, but before the teachers can do anything, she comes running and is like
"Daniel, I can't believe you! You were doing so well! You're coming with me, young man!" and she'd cart him off and pretend to scold him so the teachers would let him off since she had him, but once they rounded the corner, they split the cash and she pats his back
They do eventually form a relationship and are p much mutual yanderes. They don't need anyone else if they have each other. Granted she's better at hiding it than he is, so he comes across as somewhat violent
Everyone at the school pities the "poor nice girl" who spends all her time with such a dangerous boy. Rumors spread that he's somehow manipulating her and using her, but really it's the other way around
Like if he made her mad, she'll get into an argument with him and he'd raise his voice, but she'd cry out and sound all helpless and shit and other people would come to her defense even though she started it
ODCL being the fake bitch she is right before flashing an angry look she'd quicky get all teary eyed and be all aesthetically sad so that all people see is a crying girl but when no one's looking she flashes Dan a smile
Ofc she gets bored without her favorite toy, so she states that she'll patch things up because "It's not his fault, I know we can work on his issues! :)" And everyone just gushes about how brave and kind she is
And he loves her so of course he'll fall for her shit and take her back. Plus he's poor and she buys him food to keep him happy
He comes crawling back and she gets all teary eyed and runs to hug him and fakes an apology and such and he has no choice but to forgive her
We figure eventually though, she'd grow bored of toying with his feelings and leave him, never to return. At that point, his life would go one of several ways
Ending 1 - She can't win him back, he found a group of girls who give him genuine love and helped him be a much better person. No hard feelings, but he doesn't see room in his life for someone like her
Ending 2 - She finds him and manages to twist him against the person who found him, having him kill them and manipulating him further to serve her (and she's likely just gonna dump him again a while later, and the cycle will repeat until he chases her down and either kills her or himself to save himself from the madness she's caused him)
Ending 3 - He never left, he stayed there and stewed in his madness without her. He tried to move on. Either A. He did, getting a job to support himself and moving on to be a better guy on his own, B. He tried to, but with his reputation, he couldn't get a job and died of malnutrition, or C. He couldn't move on at all and snapped, going on a murder spree before being gunned down by law enforcement
Ending 4 - By some fucking magic, she comes back right after she leaves. She couldn't bear to be without him. She realized maybe she did love him. She comes back and they stay together. Either A. They grow up together and get help, going from their weird, fucked up relationship to a genuine, loving one and grow old together in every way, or B. they stay together, but become the crime couple that couldn't be taken alive

no offense but your 'right' to horde money is always secondary to someone's right to life (like. access to necessary resources) and i don't understand why that is an argument. your excess or desire for excess is not more important than ensuring everyone has access to necessities! 1) there are absolutely enough resources to go around and if you feel there is not, blame the super rich for hoarding them and not the poor for needing them. 2) ok u want ur liberty to not have to help other people or whatever. you have a flawed definition of liberty tho it's very American of you to say that. but consider: if you are upset about your liberty being infringed upon by. something like having to pay more taxes bc the government wants to provide easier and better access to healthcare for more people. your liberty is literally hinging on other people's lives. also. people that do not have good and easy access to resources don't have. what you see as liberty. before you can have liberty you must be able to live. (live well, like if u are poor and alive ur still alive so its necessary to make that distinction its just to note that when i say live i mean live comfortably. ) (and not just bc u are used to the status quo but bc u are able to get what you need when you need it and its not a luxury to do things like get regular check ups and eat salad) so you can talk about liberty but don't pretend like it is anything but selfish. you want what you think of liberty for yourself and not anyone else except who you personally deem eligible. you deny basic necessities to others so that you can live in excess. think of jt this way: you have 10 gallons of water. this is more than enough to last you until you are able to get more water. someone else has no water. the government tells you to share so that the other person will not die of dehydration. you refuse. they die. maybe you refused bc u care more about having stuff than people's lives or u refused bc u are perhaps concerned that there is not going to be enough to go around so you have to keep more than you need in case you are suddenly unable to obtain it with the same ease as earlier. in this case, you need merely to look over and see another person who has thousands of gallons of water. you may look at them and be impressed and want to be like them which is understandable bc we are taught to value excess and aspire to it more than we are taught to value human lives especially when we do not have an emotional investment in the specific lives. (we are also taught to value things above relationships so im saying this under the assumption most people have a small circle of people that they really care about and love) (we re taughto value ppwer over other people more than we are taught to value people as individuals even as they do not effect us on a level we percieve) but the important thing is. that person has more. you know there is a limited supply of the water you want (probably clean and drinkable) you know that that person has more water than they will ever need. recognize that they are the reason why you feel uncomfortable sharing your excess with those who have nothing. (((kill them, steal their water, redistribute))) ok. now you have addressed why the inequality in resource distribution exists. (well the person with nothing should've worked harder. ok um. using that logic. why do you not also have thousands of gallons of water? you obviously don't think you are a lazy mooch so why would you think that about someone with less than you?) you also know that bc of that, you feel safer the more water you have. ok yes now. why do you feel safer? bc water is a limited resource and you know another person has more (a larger fraction of the available resource) which makes less water available to you. this encourages you to collect and keep as much water as you can so you can feel secure in knowing you have and are going to have enough water to sustain yourself. it encourages you to experience a certain level of insecurity about your access to the water which makes you concerned about sharing your water resources with anyone else so you can be sure you will have water for you that fear, especially bc it is surrounding a scarce(limited) resource that is vital to your survival. especially bc (even though you don't know the exact fraction) you know that the other person has a much larger amount of water than they will need (likely more than they will use) and of that they are restricting the ability of others to access water at that moment and in the future. you recognize that this person holds a lot of power bc they have so much water. they can easily manipulate people who need and want more water to do their bidding in exchange for water either in order to survive or in order to own a large amount of the water for themself. to do anything. people that have no water are the most in need and so the most vulnerable and easily exploited. offering people in dire situations tiny barely liveable amounts of water in exchange for any kind or amount of labor for any duration does work and is easy for those who have extreme excess. they lose nothing of any significance and gain whatever product of the labor they forced the needy to perform. it is easy to view this problem in extremes, understanding how the super rich exploit the super poor (almost self explanatory how this system is perpetuated. will explain later tho) for whatever. but this sort of analysis, while good for illustrating the worst parts of resource hoarding neglects to provide an analysis of those in the middle. that is most people. being unable to empathize with those who have less than you is a symptom of this system(will detail later to be clear) and also serves to perpetuate it. (how it started is a different story but very briefly and in the vaguest way possible ot started the same way anything ever starts. entropy. but that's a little too astronomical and abstract for this explanation) this is one way this system affects the middle class. the relationship dynamic just described also explains the relationship of the upper class to the middle class. the upper class views the middle class in a similar way. 'those people should work harder to get where i am' 'im not worried about what they need bc i have what i want etc etc etc. this (flawed)logic is completely thrown out the wealthier someone gets. they just keep hoarding (maybe as a symbol of power and dominance, and also as just a conditioned habit. that's what u do that's wjat everyone does etc etc) this perspective however is not as harmful when only applied to the middle classes bc they are not in dire need. the middle classes dont have necessarily exorbitant amounts (although certainly to those with nothing the accumaltion of resources even a little beyond a liveable amount seems exorbitant and an act of gluttony and selfishness) (explaining the use of 'necessarily' and meaning of exorbitant in context) but they are not struggling to obtain vital resources either. their interest in accumulating more of a resource is either a product of feeling insecure in their position in society that determines their access to resources, a product of the idea more=better (this translates various ways. more=better. ok why do people want power what's the point. they get more resources and more security.) or just kind of a robotic motion people do and aspire to just bc. that's considered good and normal or whatever(i think this is just a practical example of those effects though) so often times it is ignored by those fighting for people with nothing. ((thats not to say this SHOULD have these effects it just does.)) which makes people in tje middle class feel left out and potentially unsure/insecure of their access to resources if/when the changes to allow people with nothing access to even some resources will change and how that change will ultimately affect them and their resources. (ideally this wouldnt be an issue and people would just agree to not let others die of preventable things but bc of society being the way it is this is what happens) (and i think acknowledging the struggles although relatively insignificant compared to what lower class people experience is a good way to support and encourage more people to support the revolution)( I don't think it SHOULD be something that needs to be explained in order for people to support the revolution but i think that it is needed) (also i fully fully recognize my privilege in being able to write this in hopes of convincing the middle class to be a part of this instead of being in a position where the only way i can get timely access to resources is by less carefulor even more forceful forms of convincing those with excess to give it up so that others can simply live) (anyway we have to explain how the revolution will affect the middle class) so. a lot of the resistance a middle class person feels when asked to give up their excess is due to the upper class and mega wealthy possessing and being able to access an incredibly larger percentage of any resource at anytime with very little fear that they will have that privilege revoked. the middle class is taught by the economic structure that that is the most efficient and secure way to be (essentially. selfish. unwilling to give up their excess to those with none) and they should strive to keep that status and position either in fear and anticipation of a change or with the desire to become more powerful. (power=access to resources) (creates hierarchies bc of demand) (someone owns all or a lot of a particular resource (always the super rich, a minority) and is able to sell it at any cost) in this way middle class feelings of insecurity are created by the super rich. (feelings of insecurity include the desire to be more powerful (u worry you aren't powerful enough etc)) much of that insecurity manifests in rage towards the people begging and bc they are so worried about protecting their OWN resources rather than recognizing even looking for or considering the reason why there are people with nothing which is that scarcity is manufactured by the rich hoarding. they become angry and resentful towards the beggars and choose and are taught to see the beggars as unequal/inhuman/undeserving of (at the most basic level: life) simply even the same treatment, respect and access to resources (vital and luxury) that the middle class has so that the middle class can protect their resources from being taken (ultimately) and focus on that instead of figuring out a solution to the issue and understanding the source. this perpetuates the system as it is and so perpetuates manufactured scarcity of vital resources which directly causes the death of many people. it is selfish ok yes and horrible im not calling you horrible I'm just trying to find a solution and create a better life for everyone. it's not the beggars fault u feel the need to hoard resources as much as you can it's not your fault you think like this but it is your fault you act on those thoughts and it is your responsibility to work to change it. and yeah it isn't fair you have to deal with a problem you had 0 part in creating but look. people are dying bc of that and if you refuse to help change the system you are allowing and contributing to their deaths. if all of the unnecessary deaths caused by manufactured scarcity could be evaluated by what percentage of their death was caused by the rich and middle classes, the rich would play a bigger part obvioisly than the middle class. this is not about who causes the most harm but about the fact that there is harm being caused. and the more members of the middle class willing to help lessen the amount of harm they do helps (concretely: directly saves lives) (abstract: contributes to revolution// revolutionary atmosphere/ acceptance/ understanding/exposure etc etc) firstly to save lives and secondly to take steps to begin to put a system in place which will ensure that people are not dying bc they can't get food or water or health care. and so working to create a more equal and sustainable and harmonic society. all around better. and by better i mean does the least amount of harm.

This is such a huge point. Cos I think there’s a very common trend of THT attempting to approach issues from various angles and try to show the complexity of it but then it going WHOOSH over so many viewers’ heads. Which never makes sense to me cos like, what’s the point in watching THT if you’re not considering it on multiple levels and trying to explore the issues? I don’t wanna point the blame in the general directions of particular shippers but I can’t help it, perhaps cos they’re just the most vocal in fandom, but it seems that the Disney-eqsque superhero tale is what they want, complete with EPIC HETERO ROMANCE!!! throughout. I’d say at least 50% of the responses are about Mr. Nicky (It goes up to 75-80% if we are actually shown his face). (And their concern is focused on the male romantic lead... YAWN.)
I would absolutely love THT to take the path of questioning mob mentality and the cycle of violence/victimization, etc. But it may be too much for even Hulu to want to tackle considering how black and white viewers seem to think. They are trying so HARD to present characters as shades of grey (Serena, being the main example. But June, Emily, Luke, Nick, etc. also) but instead of placing them along a spectrum it’s either DIE EVIL SCUM! or AMAZING CINNAMON ROLL CAN DO NO WRONG! I think the only one they complain about is June cos she’s not AS perfect as they’d like her to be. She makes some dumbass fucking decisions for sure. Sometimes I like that about her, especially how pre-Gilead June was not a super great person. She was just sorta... normal. (Other times I’m like, “JUNE YOU IDIOT WTF?!” lol but that’s fun too I guess.) If I made a scale myself, I’d probably put June fairly close to the centre, rather than on the far “good” end.

If June hadn’t been deemed a “fallen woman” and thus been allowed to stay as an Econowife, with Luke and Hannah, would she have done anything? Would she be as inspired to rebel and resist as she is? I’m not trying to shit on June at all, but I feel like it’s a question I’m curious about. A lot of people say they would be big heroes, but when really faced with the reality of living a sort of shitty life or risking that for an uncertain thing/death, most just choose to go along with it and hope it ends (especially hope that SOMEBODY else takes the risk to end it). Even good people. What do you think?

I love how you described all the politics of that. It really is a fascinating thing to consider, especially how to deal with Gilead, both on an international scale, and just on smaller scales. War? Seems inevitable honestly. And clearly, Gilead is STILL fighting wars all over the continent. I honestly... you’re so right. It’s very complex and I’m not sure how detailed THT will go with that. They seem to be keeping things quite... superficial. They reference things every so often but there’s nothing solid to latch onto. It often reminds me of the Underpants Gnomes from South Park.

So, we’ll see how they do it. I doubt we’re really going to get a lot of details about how everything works and maybe it’s just better that way cos it seems like the more they try to explain how Gilead stays working, it makes even less sense. And also, as much as this stuff is interesting, I really don’t wanna watch THT turn into like Zero Dark Thirty or some shit. It’s strongest when focused on the women’s experiences specifically.

Same! It wasn’t until S2 that I started going “hmm” about Fred. I thought he wasn’t as evil as her. And when you go back and watch S1 knowing what he’s done in S2, tehre are hints and I got a weird vibe. Like... I dunno. I was randomly just rewatching that 2x11 scene where Fred and Serena are at the house and Fred is just so.... Yikes. His motives are so clear. And I tried to find examples of Fred’s humanity. I do believe we get glimpses of Serena’s, and she has capacity for kindness--in very specific circumstances but I couldn’t find a single scene of Fred where he does anything selfless, or without expecting some sort of gross sexual favour/ego stroke in return, or even kind. It’s all for his own gratification. And I am 1000% convinced he has some sort of pregnancy fetish. It doesn’t seem like he gives a shit about the actual baby, esp once its born. He’s more interested in June’s bodily changes (not the actual baby) when she’s pregnant, and her lactation afterwards. And I may not know much about the world of fetishes but I do know that’s not exactly a rare one for men.
I think an argument against me would be the car convo about creating the Ceremony cos Fred kind of just went along with it and was on the fence. But then I think... it’s not that he was against it at all. He just didn’t think women would like it. It was never, “Nah, mate, that’s a step too far.” It was more like, “Cool idea, bros. But let’s rebrand it okay?” I mean, in the flashbacks, he did seem very proud of her, enamored, like you said. But part of me just can’t shake that, okay fair play that he probably did honestly love/respect her in some ways, but he also saw it as, “Yes, this plan is going just the way I want it!” I don’t feel like power corrupts THAT much, that quickly that he’d go from perfect husband and lovingly gazing at his amazing wife to demeaning, repeatedly cheating on her, and beating the living shit out of her (and raping her) in a few years. Then again, extreme situations can make people change quite abruptly. Who knows.
I dunno. Maybe I just hate him and dont’ wanna give him any credit for being a human being in any way whatsoever lol.
