Fun little silly thought I had about the Lair Games and specifically Leo deliberately losing is all the reasons he could have for doing so.

My favorite headcanon for his main motivation is that Splinter wasn’t proud of him anymore.

I imagine that, in the beginning, winning the Lair Games was Leo’s opportunity to shine. He wasn’t artistic or the baby of the family like Mikey, wasn’t a tech genius who created amazing inventions like Donnie, wasn’t the eldest who was insanely strong and dependable like Raph. So he had to shine somewhere else- anywhere else- and what better way to get attention than to be a winner? A champion?

And then he won too much. And it wasn’t special anymore. He got too big headed, too cocky, he knew this was his element and he ran with it.

Splinter’s words of congratulations slowly petered out. Suddenly, there was no real reason to win.

Winning feels empty when the only one cheering you on is yourself.

So- Leo schemed. And he’s a great schemer, fooling his whole family (and Donnie did deserve a win- people were way happier when he won.)

He even gave up his prized possession! His room!

Though he knows his brothers probably think it’s a bad prize. A terrible one, even.

Leo doesn’t sleep much as is, though. So Dad’s snores were more comforting than anything. It was reassuring to hear him so clearly alive and close by.

Even if the distance between them was larger than Leo’d like.

He’d just have to find something else, something more to show his dad that Leo was someone to trust, to be proud of, to love.

He gets his chance soon after, when he needs to pull off a plan against Big Mama at his dad’s side. Leo can only hope this victory is one that has a lasting effect when his father looks at him with pride once more.

Victory, for Leo, is a pretty loaded term.

People are so boring about classic literature sometimes. Like I know it’s cool to be critical of men in books from the 19th century or whatever but it just leads to ripping out all of the nuance in favor of “Uh all of the Brontë men were evil and abusive and that’s all there is to those characters.” Say something interesting. s12 destiel from dean's perspective is explanation enough for why dean is sooooo insane after that season. like.

- first he almost kills himself for the greater good or whatever and has to come to terms with like. dying. on purpose. and then he is given the gift of life but before he can be like yay! i can go home! his mom is back from the dead??? and his brother is missing???

- then his mom leaves him bc she wants to figure out who she is and even tho he's like a 38 yo man it fucks w him a lot understandably.

-they get arrested and put in SOLITARY for a while and when they finally get out and meet cas again (at which point dean has once again come to terms with dying for the greater good but also mostly his mom and brother this time), he KILLS THE REAPER THEY MADE THE DEAL WITH AND GETS ALL EMOTIONAL??? after which he proceeds to fuck off bc he is Busy™ tracking lucifer etc.,

- then they get a lead and CAS ALMOST DIES IN FRONT OF HIS EYES and throws an I love you in his goodbye speech for the lolz. which. hahaha. anyway cas lives but turns out his mother — with whom he's trying to connect so badly so he can achieve full Normalcy — was like. lowkey responsible for his almost death. so they're fighting now.

- cas receives a divine voicemail from his close friend and colleague and then they go on that case with Lily sunder and ISHIM BEATS CAS UP AND THREATENS TO KILL HIM and even after they beat him Lily Sunder is like. I'm gonna go do some soul searching and if im in the mood I'll come back and KILL YOU. THREAT. and cas is like 😔 fair. so you know.

- there is also an instance of him losing his memories which is scary. and it's like. being intimately familiar with that experience is. something else. as a memory loss girlie let me tell you 👍🏽😄

- and then!!!!! lucifer's unborn child mind melds with his wifehusband — once more in front of his own two eyes — and "manipulates" him into running away with the pregnant lady instead of staying and Figuring Out A Solution. and when they finally do find cas, they are with them for all of 12 hours before HE DIES. FORREAL THIS TIME. AND LIKE THAT'S IT. NO COMING BACK FROM THAT ONE!

this is not an exhaustive list bc i don't remember everything but. like you know. he was primed to get worse and worse. all things that happen in s12 are out of his control but they are also things that happen in front of his eyes, and in ways that make him think that perhaps he did have control over them and he did fuck up some way and he *should* have done something to change the course of their lives so he's filled with guiltshame about it. and he decides that the solution to not losing anyone in the foreseeable future is to just. Satoru Gojo

It was not intentional, making you a gymrat, that was. He was very much in to fitness when you first got together. His favorite thing was sending you post workout photos because your reactions always fueled his ego.

He always, always took time to try and partake in your interests. It felt fair that you tried to take part in his. When you asked if you could go to the gym with him one day, he was eager to accept!

Unfortunately, the man that he is did not take the fact that you were not an active person into account. After warmup stretches he immediately just carried on with his standard routine. Satoru is insane. He starts his routine off with burpies. You don't give up, of course. But you cannot keep pace.

Satoru is so eager to show you how various machines work though. It's definitely an excuse to be close to you. It also served as an excuse to stare down any man, woman, or otherwise who stared at you.

Despite it being a gym date, for once he isn't so insanely clingy as he tends to be. He's encouraging and excited and is sure you don't hurt yourself.

Though, just because his own safety is also important, he does ask someone in his same weight class to act as his own checker when you get to weights. Unfortunately, as a man always on the grind, he is not dropping any weights on his bench press just to make you feel better.

It is also definitely because he wants to show off how strong he is. He is pushing his limit because of course he is.

What he didn't expect is how much fun you had, even if when you got home you were sweaty and miserable and simply wanted to exist in a hot bath until your skin melted.

You were ready to go again two days later. Satoru was sure it was a phase. Not that he didn't enjoy the gym date, of course! He was always happy to have you with him. Though he might need to sacrifice showing off for his own personal safety.

While the two of you warm up, he asks if there's anything you want to focus on if you're going to be accompanying him to the gym. You smile and joke about wanting to out-lift him. He takes it completely seriously.

Next thing you know he has a routine for upper body strength completely planned out for you. With a little bit of core strength to even out the workload and to avoid injuring your back.

When you accompanying him to the gym becomes a normal thing, it doesn't take long for you each to go off on your own to focus what works for you. Though Satoru makes it a point to always be at your side, changing his routine around so that he's always close enough to help if need be.

Satoru knew he was making a monster when you started to send him post workout photos.

Suguru Geto

Suguru was shocked when you said you wanted to go to the gym with him one day. He thought it was some weird ploy to see if there were people hitting on him while he worked out. Then he thought it was just to admire him. It took him a few tries to figure out that you did, in-fact want to also work out with him.

He was instantly on board with the idea. He also had no issue simplifying his routine to accommodate the fact that you were new to this, he wasn't about to leave you in the dust.

You had honestly expected him to get possessive about you. So many people around who could stare at you in potentially somewhat compromising positions. He didn't though. "I'm with you after all, you're far less likely to get hit on if you're with a gym partner."

What you miss is the downright threatening stares he gives anyone that he feels is even slightly pushing their limits. You don't miss the fact that he's quick to make a formal complaint to the gym itself when you mention someone was giving you the creeps.

It seems he's actually a pretty popular guy in the gym. Not in the way you were expecting though, a handsome man like him. He's polite to others and eager to help. When he spots someone at the bench press on their own he makes sure to keep an eye on them just in case. When their elbow gives out and they dump the bar to the side to avoid crushing their throat, Suguru is immediately there to help.

He takes his fitness and more importantly, his safety in fitness, so seriously. In turn he does the same for everyone else.

Suguru is still pretty handsy with you though. When he corrects your posture, he doesn't just demonstrate but uses his hands to guide your body.

He's quiet during sets, but afterwards is so kind, insisting you did amazing. He doesn't want to distract you after all. Consistently he checks in and makes sure you're okay. You are, and you know you could tell him if something was wrong. He makes you feel so safe in an environment that could otherwise be so judgemental.

When you're done and home he's quick to run a hot shower. He doesn't mind waiting for you to finish first before taking his own though.

Even if you don't end up going with him regularly, his gym buddies never hear the end of how much fun he had working out with you. He'd just never force you to do something you don't want to.

Luckily, at least once a week, you two make it appoint to have a gym date. For your relationship, and your personal health!

Kento Nanami

He had never even thought about gym dates. It was something he did for himself first and foremost. At the gym Kento was able to just shut his brain off after a long day for some very much needed him-time.

So it was definitely weird to have someone come with him. Especially because he suddenly became very aware of his own personal bad habits. Not that he was inconsiderate to anyone else. Just that his safety never quite came to mind.

It was so second nature to him that he stopped a moment when you asked if he was going to stretch before working out. No, he was not. Not until you said something.

There was just something about going to the gym after a long day at a job he hated. Especially because he was able to tune out the stares he got when he did squats or dead lifts. Maybe it was better you were here.

Nope. That was a lie. Suddenly it feels like every single person in this gym is staring directly at your ass when you squat down. He's such a reserved man, never been insecure about his relationship. Except for now.

Not that he didn't want to share something he enjoyed with you. It just wasn't that he enjoyed working out in the way people tended to enjoy hobbies.

Eventually he manages to calm his nerves. You two find a corner to ease his weird paranoia that people are staring.

You are actually dumbfounded when he mentions that he doesn't listen to music when he works out. Just the ambiance of a gym. You offer him an earbud and the two listen to some pre-made work out playlist.

The mood lightens as both of you rag on the music taste of whoever made the playlist while you both hold planks. Even when you give out because of your inexperience, you lay on your stomach across from him. The two of you joking around quietly in your own little corner of the world.

You eventually simply hang out and watch him go through his routine. Not wanting to accidentally fuel whatever weird insecurity fell over him.

There's a plus side to it though. While usually it is something he does because it's routine, he finds there's something fun about having you at his side. Exercise becomes a little more fun when he has someone there with him.

His life often tended to be so dull when he committed himself to being a man of routine. While maybe, at first, there was something that irked him, he actually greatly enjoyed the date.

When you get home he has a rare moment of vulnerability after he's showered. "Were you eying anyone else while we were there?"

You just smiled and laughed at something so ridiculous. "How could I? The best man in the entire world was in front of me the whole time?"

listen like... in my opinion the pov character should be wrong or contradictory or unreliable sometimes. this is third person limited they're not supposed to have all the information or always be right. the narrator doesn't stop being a character

#if i am doing a good job as an author then the reader can TELL when this is happening #i just think it's so boring to write from one character's perspective if that means flattening out everything that makes them a character #if he tells the audience he's outgrown something but the entire story is about how you're never as far from the past as you think #then the implication is that this is NOT outgrown. anyway you've gotta trust your readers a bit. #got a GREAT comment on a fic where someone noticed this and it made me smile all day. like YES you saw what i was hoping for you to see
