Day 16 • Self-Care • of #marchmeetthemaker2020 by @joannehawker. If you are selfemployed, self care is a huge subject, that people forget too often about. A lot of us are workaholics and don‘t know where to stop. I have the same problem. I am lucky, that I can work from home and am almost always motivated to do some work! BUT: Over the last years, as my business grew, I learned how to take breaks. I started listening to my body. I try to do different tasks at least every 90 Minutes. I use timers for that. I built my work station so that I can switch between sitting and standing up, to make sure, that I move from time to time. And I try not to push myself to hard. If my back or head hurts, I just stop and take a break or leave everything be for the day without feeling guilty! I am very organized, therefore I usually have enough time to take the breaks I need. As I work from home, staying home is not a problem for me. But before I usually chose myself to stay at home. Now that you are „forced“ to stay at home, that can be mentally challenging. I live alone, so social contacts are gone for 1-2 weeks, maybe more. It is a good practice to be alone with yourself. I try to entertain my self as much as possible with different tasks. I listen to loud music and dance through my apartment, deep clean one room every day, skype with friends and family and work in between. What do you do at home? On quitting Amazon
When I moved back to the UK last July, I tried logging into my UK Amazon account. Since I had been out of the country for a long time, the account needed to be reset which I could only do by getting a code sent to my phone number. But that number was no longer in use so I wasn’t able to get it done. I had to call them. I had to make a phone call. And then try and remember which address was attached to the account and confirm this and that and blah blah. It was a bit stressful. How pathetic. I was stressed out about not having access to my Amazon account. When I had finally got it sorted, I remember saying to a friend that I somehow felt complete again. I mean listen to yourself, McCann.
It made me stop and think really hard about my habits and spending and general consumerist behaviour. The kind of behaviour that Amazon (other online retail monsters are available) is an enabler – nay – an encourager of. So, it’s time to quit. So far, so good, in 2022.
For me, it’s not just about spending. To be honest, I never really spent silly amounts. It’s about my attitude. What I wanted and what I needed were becoming the same thing. And everything was urgent. Like if I can’t get it delivered tomorrow with this particular retailer, I will keep looking until I find one that I can get quicker. Funny though, isn’t it, how that urgency wasn’t enough to send me out to an actual shop to see if I could get what I so desperately “needed” that day. No, I’ll happily add to the planet’s carbon emissions by insisting that my product is shipped to me, using over the top and unnecessary packaging at that. And then when it arrives, it’s not quite what I thought it would be, is it? But never mind, I’m sure it’ll be useful at some point anyway. Next!
All this. This ability to get something, whatever you “need”, so quickly, with virtually zero effort – aside from the environmental issues – removes thought from the process. Because something pops in your head and the next day it’s on your doorstep. You don’t mull it over on the days between the thought popping into your head and when you actually go out shopping for a few bits. You don’t give yourself a chance to decide you’re being silly and that actually you can make do with what you have. You don’t allow time to say, “What the hell am I thinking? A banana slicer?”. You don’t browse around the physical products and think, “Actually, is this pebble cum face massager really worth my money?”. And even if you decide your need or want is legitimate, you don’t give yourself a chance to really choose the right product – one that will actually do what it says on the tin, and last a long time. Nor do you give yourself a chance to see if you can buy second hand – sorry, sorry preloved.
I want to be better than this. I want to feel better about myself, my home and what’s in it. I want to do better for my community and our environment. Not for Amazon et al. So I quit. And guess what? I’m fine. I’m still complete. Even more complete than before.
