Xena and Gabrielle Relationship Timeline (official)

Xena fell for Gabrielle pretty early in Season 1 but didn't act on it because she was dealing with her whole "Woe is me, I'm bad and evil and Gabrielle is pure and good" drama.

Gabrielle, meanwhile, was suffering some serious comphet and it wasn't until Girls Just Wanna Have Fun when she realised GIRLS ARE HOT and that she didn't just want to be Xena, she wanted to be WITH Xena.

That end scene in GJWHF is basically Gabrielle propositioning Xena and in my head canon, they become FWB after this because a) Gabrielle is a baby gay and b) Xena is scared of commitment.

Gabrielle then got guilted into marrying Perdicus because he threatened to kill himself (classy dude that one), but also because of gay panic and the fact that Xena wouldn't agree to make their relationship more serious.

If Ulysses is actually a real episode and not a fever dream, it definitely happened after ROC but before The Quest, where X and G are still in their weird FWB but not willing to admit they are actually girlfriends stage. I have no idea what Xena would ever see in such a boring dude but whatever. Something something hurt feelings about Perdy and maybe some more internalised "I'm getting too close to Gabrielle and I will hurt her, better to hurt her now by latching on to this boring man" thinking.

Then The Quest happens and they admit they love each other (gay) and then they're officially girlfriends and they get married after A Family Affair and honeymoon in India.

it's hysterical. It's poetic in a sense of just how much of this saga is built on looking for the love of an absent God and how much Lucilius himself stands as this unloving figure in general.

I would say that it is relatively popular, yes - along the years I have seen people's interpretations about Gabrielle varying between seeing her as a GNC/butch lesbian or a transmasc character. And I mean, it's not like there's a ton of Gabrielle content out there (a shame), but I think this is not an unpopular view of her by far.

Okay. I'm in the middle of my Xena rewatch, and I'm on A Family Affair, and can we talk about the scene where Xena meets Gabrielle's parents?

Xena: So, how's she been?

Gabs' dad: Without you? Just fine.

Xena: I meant, after everything she's been through.

Gabs' dad: You should know. Seducing her away from home with your heroics, filling her head with strange ideas. How's she been? Changed forever.

Like! This is the most obvious metaphor for a parent/family that can't accept their gay kid, and by extension, their gay kids' partner. And I think it's really well executed. It hits close to home, but it feels like the person writing it gets it. Y'know. Which, given that Liz Friedman co-wrote this, tracks. She knew what the fuck she was doing here and it's so well done.

Anyway, I needed to just simply gush lightly about it. I will literally never get over the fact that this show portrays both the joys and the hardships of a lesbian relationship better than more explicit shows today. I'll never get over it!

actually no this should be a post not a tag. good omens is as much about the world that they’re saving as it is about aziraphale and crowley, if not more so. the quirky side characters aren’t just there to be funny. they’re there to remind you that this world is worth being preserved, with all its crotchety old witchfinders and women following family prophecies and little antichrists running amuck with their friends. that’s why the narration being preserved via god voiceover in s1 is a brilliant choice, because there are so many little details that are built into it to remind you that this world is full to bursting with life and it doesn’t deserve to be bundled away overnight like a temporary art exhibit.

but when you reach s2, it’s no longer a story about that world. it’s a story About crowley and aziraphale, and it’s weaker for it. why are there lesbians that are so unremarkable i can’t even remember their names? why are gabriel and beelzebub different characters entirely from who they were introduced as in s1, (some of the best non-book additions in how their presence heightened the tension of the situation)? in another show, another story, it wouldn’t lose anything by the world being so much less vibrant, but when that was The Point of s1 and the book, well.

“But without a doubt the most iconic on-screen lesbian representation to come from the 90’s and perhaps of all-time is unquestionably Xena and Gabrielle from ‘Xena: Warrior Princess’. A series which started airing in 1995 and spanned 6 seasons following the character of Xena, an infamous warrior on a quest to seek redemption for her past sins alongside the small town bard Gabrielle. It’s no secret that the writers for Xena purposefully implemented romantic subtext between the characters of Xena and Gabrielle from the very beginning. This subtext eventually bled into main text in the later seasons. Xena and Gabrielle were declared soulmates, they kissed on the lips more than once, and they even got married. It’s also been confirmed my the creator of Xena, Rob Tapert, in numerous interviews that the romantic relationship between the two was deliberate and carefully planted in the show. He and the writers had to contend with the censors - meaning that they were limited with what they could portray on-screen. Tapert has also said that they had written an episode where they actually outed Xena and Gabrielle but Universal told them that they couldn’t use it so they ended up having to do a rewrite. The show, at its core, is a piece of lesbian media but it’s a piece that is distorted by performative heterosexual elements for the sake of keeping the studio happy and to keep it marketable to as big an audience as possible. It’s been well documented that the writers faced a lot of barriers with the network desperately trying to censor any overt romantic implications between Xena and Gabrielle. However, the writers creative efforts to get around the censorship alongside the lightening in a bottle chemistry that Lucy and Renee had undoubtably created one of the most iconic lesbian couples of all-time. ‘Xena: Warrior Princess’ is an example of lesbian representation that managed to thrive against censorship and it was a lifeline for a lot of lesbians and bisexual women in the 90’s who struggled to see that type of relationship and love between two women anywhere else. Please check out this wonderful creator’s breakdown of the negative and positive lesbian representation of the 90’s. It is thoroughly educational and insightful and it affectionately gushes about my favourite TV show and WLW relationship of all-time. I still don’t know if can call Xena and Gabrielle a lesbian couple or relationship given I headcanon Xena as bisexual but I can say that it is absolutely the greatest lesbian representation that I have ever seen in my life. And I implore people who want to see proper positive lesbian or WLW representation to watch this show. Sapphic Underground also has a 1 hour long lesbian review of ‘Xena: Warrior Princess’ on her YouTube that I would also recommend people to please check out.

When we talk of positive representation for LGBTQ media here on Tumblr or on any social media platform… I hate that Xena and Gabrielle are almost always ignored or even removed entirely from the conversation just because it was not explicitly textually confirmed as canon when it is easily one of the most authentic representations of WLW there is. Like,… in principle. Not just in TV but in any platform of art/entertainment that has ever been created. The creators for Xena went above and beyond expectations to provide something that was sorely missing in the landscape of art/entertainment media. Like if you watched it, you would understand what I mean with this. It’s revolutionary what they did with it.

I wanted to join this wonderful community and chronicle some of my writing projects that I plan to one day turn into an audio roleplay series, maybe even a book, who knows. About The Projects

I have created a multilayered Universe for my projects, in which I write different character-driven narratives that affect a world consumed by mystery and the supernatural. These are meant to be interactive stories, so each character interacts with the listener and will be voiced by me in my upcoming audio series!

Beast Beneath The Moonlight: A story about Gabriel, an idealistic intern at a hospital whose life goal is to save as many people as he can. He is turned into a werewolf and is then forced to confront his inner beast, contemplate mortality and understand the true meaning of strength.

Written in Blood: Killian, a very old vampire from a bygone era, struggling to cope with the death of his lover centuries before, trying his best to live his remaining days in peace until his very bloody past starts to catch up to him.

Fiends With Benefits: Levi, a half-demon caught between the Mortal and Supernatural world, expected to be the best by both worlds while not being accepted by either. He lives under his predecessor's shadow until a plot that could unravel Fiend Society is brought to light.

There will be more stories within this world, so stay tuned.

Completely out of step with my usual fixation, but I saw fan art with femme!Chat, forgot about it for a while, and then got hit with idea which is basically we all know Chat is 1) a huge flirt and 2) Adrien’s outlet for everything he’s not allowed to be as Adrien Agreste.

And just…au where Adrien-> Adrienne is a girl. A girl with HUGE expectations set for her by Gabriel (f, because I think this works well with a SUPER strict, unavailable mother) and one of those expectations being, of course, to be straight.

So we got Adrienne, the most closeted gay girl to ever gay, making up male celebrity crushes and doing EVERYTHING in her power to prove she definitely, certainly, 100%, no girls included, likes boys.

And on the other hand, there’s Verified Lesbian DisasterTM Chat Noir. Gay Icon of Paris. Can’t go three seconds without spewing Gay all over the place. Is she flirting or just that useless at acting straight?

There’s a viral, gif-ed, meme-ed shaking phone recording of Chat just GOING OFF on all the ways girls are beautiful and perfect and so hot, omg, Ladybug, you don’t understand—

(Marinette thought she was straight, but now she’s fighting to ignore the fluttery feelings she gets when Chat flirts with her and, ugh, she has the worst crush on definitely-straight would-never-like-her-back Adrienne.)

Paris is pretty sure that their superheroes are dating (Have you seen those two? That is not a platonic “gal pals” situation). Ladybug shuts down anyone who suggests they’re dating but, like, if they aren’t together why does she constantly refer to Chat as her “partner” and threatens bodily harm to anyone who dares suggest she’s a sidekick or anything less? What about how they’re always cuddling together? What about all the dates?

(”They’re not DATES!” vents Ladybug.

“They’re not not dates,” says Chat with an adorable stupid wink.)

Even those who take what Ladybug and Chat Noir say at face value assume that they’re just the kind of lesbians who date for three years before figuring out they’re dating. Frankly, they’re not wrong. 

But also, we’ve got Marinette/Ladybug who assume like…Chat has to be super comfortable with her sexuality, right? She throws it around everywhere. Whereas Marinette is still trying to work out how she feels about being bi. Like, she knows it’s not bad. Her parents won’t have a problem with it. Alya was delighted when she told her! So why is it still hard? Why does the thought still feel uncomfortable and, sometimes, dirty, when she thinks about it? Why is it still hard?

So of course she look to Chat, her super out and open friend, to figure out how to process it. But Chat actually isn’t okay with her sexuality at all. She pretends when she’s Chat Noir because she can, but when she’s Adrienne, she’s filled with so much shame about it. Why can’t she just be normal? Why does she have to feel this way and feel it so much if it’s so clearly bad? Sure, Chat can be gay, but Chat is a superhero and ultimately a mask. Chat can’t be real.

In this au, it’s not just Ladybug’s denial disinterest that’s holding them back, but Chat won’t actually let herself have this. Sure, she’ll flirt and make gay jokes and wear a pride flag as a cape as Pride, but actually have a relationship with Ladybug? Act on all those feelings and fantasies she has? No, no, absolutely not. She’d rather be eviscerated by an akuma first.

And Adrienne is filled with so much guilt when she’s herself for what she does as Chat. Adrienne shouldn’t do that. Adrienne shouldn’t want that. And she’s desperate not a hint of what she is as Chat Noir come through in Adrienne Agreste. This time, Chat is just as insistent, if not more, that they have to keep their identities secret. She can’t ever have her alter ego revealed. It would ruin everything. Adrienne Agreste can’t be gay.

Over time, Ladybug has to slowly figure out that Chat isn’t nearly as confident and secure in her identity as she appears be. Adrienne has to learn to actually let herself have this. That it’s absolutely okay to be in love with her best friend and partner in saving Paris (or to be crushing on that super cute girl behind her in class). And, somehow, they have to work out the classic Love Square and figure out the exceptionally obvious fact that THE OTHER LIKES YOU BACK.
