So anyway, Mein Herz Brennt Making of liveblog, one of my favourites
First of all, I do take any use of piano MHB as a slight towards my tiny hands. -1 point
I really would love to visit this place, it's beautiful
I love that Oli introduces it and then Till is straight in there talking about murder and stabbings. Trust that to be what intrigues him. I feel like 'smells like murder' isn't a direct translation but that's purely because I spent like ten minutes trying to work out what words he says. It rhymes, which is suspicious.
Oh this was before he let his chest piercing reject all the way out in the grossest way
When schneider says Krankenhaus it sounds very Geordie and I'm convinced that kind of thing is why Auf Wiedersehen, Pet was created
Richards eyes light up when he's talking about the room he's in and it's one of those looks where it's just. I would love to listen to anything anyone has to say when their eyes have that sparkle.
"the scavengers had already been here" cue Paul talking about his criminal past thieving from there. See, another example everyone forgets of him being the biggest bastard of them all. The smile is a front.
One of my favourite ever Rammstein things is the combined joy and mockery from Paul when Richard is revealed to be wearing the bird mask and it wiggles as he nods. He looks like a little black cockatoo. Richard looks embarrassed to be wearing it but Paul is having the time of his LIFE.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The way is echoes in his mask makes him sound like he's clucking
Flakes glasses perching in his cone make him look like that sesame Street doctor or scientist
They all suit this make up so much and I wish they'd consider it as a stage look
Peck. Not intimidated.
Considering the nightmares Till has/had, ouch
Richard looks so much like a little vampire prince but like, a character from what we do in the shadows. He makes his own smokescreen entry/exist and everything.
Melanie!!!
Richard has many tendons in his neck huh.
The sounddd. I used to always be curious as to whether or not people in music videos were making the sounds it looks like they're making and now I know and I'm uncomfortable. This and also later when till does the heart
His laugh is never what I expect it to be
That uh. That doesn't look like he's in pain the way the injection sounds implied. At all. Not that I'm complaining but it gives mixed messages.
I'm so sure Richard is the only one I've ever heard use the word quasi. It makes sense for him if true but maybe I only notice because of the tone he uses? His is quite a punchy nasal tone it might just be more noticeable.
Till with kids is always the most adorable wonderful thing. He's really helping to keep them relaxed despite the creepiness of the stuff they're shooting.
"if you look at the cover then you'll recognise a morbidity to the whole thing" till, my darling, do you think people don't already ~see the morbidity~?
I googled and the lady doesn't pronounce renaissance with a g like Till does and that interests me. In fairness I have to assume it's like in Norwegian how words like restaurant are pronounced with a g sound because it's closer to the French sounds? It's not like we in English donut the French way either but the Google translate lady does. This is why I always suspect that when I'm learning a language I'm learning the language wrong and at some point I'll find out there's a Real, For Adults version if the language that's totally different. This is irrelevant. Accents are fun and I like being able to notice them.
It feels so strange seeing this knowing what Eugenio did
Paul taking pictures because he knows better than them
Something about a child saying "ah yes, I know Till and Flake very well" is hysterical.
You can feel the dismay and disapproval radiating off till as he tries to be diplomatic about the Spanish understanding of linear time. He struggles to find a positive and only comes up with the fire walls. "It should have gone out before we filmed anything because they were fucking around with the playback so long but it didn't" is his only compliment.
The German word for French is wild.
Do they know they could have hired an interpreter? Interpreters existed in 2012 I know this
This whole thing with Melanie is beautiful you can't deny that the arm Eugenio made with then was lovely.
Till in the dress with Melanie in his lap. I don't off the top of my head remember seeing it in either video so I simply must assume that it was just what he was wearing that day when he showed up. She's so tiny on his knee I'm glad they're still friends.
Tumblr media
"you're left in a state of trauma when everyone stares at you all the time" did this need to get so heavy? It's interesting that he focused more on her voice than her appearance there, though in fairness it's pretty high
They all love her so much and it's totally understandable.
Mit rock n roll und cola trinken
I have to skip the screaming the secondhand embarrassment is too much.
Part 2
Again, this liveblog is so long
Sometimes Oli speaks like his body isn't used to talking.
I want, so badly, to know if Richard was having memories of his dreadlocked youth The tiny cup in his elegant hand is so pleading and then you look left and. It sure is something.
Tumblr media
Are they freckles or acne scars across Tills shoulders?...cute. The first set of arm/chest wounds, not so much. I do spy his lil tummy scar
Richard does look like he almost swooped in for a kiss and then changed his mind because of the camera. Paul turns his head that way and then Richard tries to save with a step back and face rub (his own). Just saying.
Tumblr media
The fact that a few of them have taken pictures on their personal phones warms my soul it's such a nice reminder that they're good friends outside of work and My Heart
Schneider and Paul ready at a moment's notice to be Dumbasses. J'adore.
What if Zoran was more of a background character tho actually
God, schneider is beautiful. An ethereal, pure beauty that exists no matter how he's being styled.
See okay how is flake almost taller than Oli right now he's not even doing his standard open legs and swan spine thing
It must be so hard to find Oli sized clothes. Flake is also tall and slim but he's a lot more leg, whereas Olis height seems largely to be torso. I have to assume a lot of his stuff is tailored or custom made now.
I always forget about the marks on tills back when he's in the nightmare dress
The child staring with great confusion at a bright red flake reading. I would love to know what his favourite books are.
The childs plural poking and prodding at a very patient Oli, who gracefully bends his spine in ways I've never seen a human do before. I wonder if he's ever dressed up as Lurch from the Addams family.
Tumblr media
The actress playing the woman in this half is so beautiful and has a power her younger counterpart lacked when she was threatening him with her weapon.
I am a dummy and was like weird why is Paul speaking Norwegian. I know full well he wasn't saying unnskyld because I've heard Germans say their equivalent before and I assume Entschuldigen either sounds like that fast or shortens so what the fuck, rhi
Till guiding people through him murdering them is truly one of life's greatest pleasures. They trust him so completely. I would like to watch them dance the elegance would be astounding.
Paul lurking watching with what I choose to see as pride as till slaughters an old woman.
Paul being critical (again, as always, rightly so) of the hallway mouthing the lyrics decision.
"for this in prepared to make compromises" he says, hating every bitter word of it
I would like to know what he wanted to say about till and then see him get into trouble over it.
I would like to see till in a bouncy castle. He's adorable jumping into the comfy pit I want to see him in a bouncy castle. Child, utter child.
Paul takes every opportunity to say how hot he thinks they all are and I love that about him. Sometimes your friends are all hot and everybody needs to understand that fact.
Their approaches to pretending to play cello are all so uniquely them. Flake and Richard are taking the time to try and understand what they're being told, whereas Paul just fucking. Lays into it, attracting the weirdest looks from Oli. Richard looks beautiful with that cello and I think he should learn to play. For fun not for work. It's not just that he looks so handsome, but I think that's the easiest way to convince him. I think he'd be good at it, and not being the lead at something might be good for him.
Tumblr media
I appreciate that Oli is skeptical because yeah they do all look like they've never held a cello before.
They do, however, all look lovely in their dresses. I'm trying but actually I can't not say that Schneiders little sternum dip makes it seem like he has breasts in that dress and it's a good look for him.
Tumblr media
Till singing it in such a high voice, more like his speaking voice, is both interesting and lovely. Oli is trying... So little compared to the others. Laughably incorrect
Why yes, I am laughing at the sheer length of the spikes. They're just... They're so fucking long. So long.
Tumblr media
Paul is actually probably the best one there, ironically. They're all comically out of time. They're professional musicians. I know they aren't used to bowed instruments I do understand and I don't want to be uncharitable but also they are struggling. I want to see cellists react to this.
Pretty dresses! And the nightmare but with the most awful and worst fingers! Like the Grinch but goth.
Both Schneider and Richard had the same neverending shoot idea and I am Intrigued.
Till waiting for Schneider with the umbrella :)
Wir brennen! Paul is always so happy to play with fire.

There is no limit to how many good songs exist! There are just so many!
My June playlist is finished, and on time too! Please enjoy all manner of bangers from Dave Brubeck, Nelly Furtado and everyone in between.
listen here
Night And Day - Hot Chip: I’ve started a band with some friends and my friend Tiana (who has requested a special shoutout in this playlist and is currently receiving it!) suggested this as a song for us to learn and she was extremely right to do it! It’s extremely funky and probably the most i’ve ever liked Hot Chip because they’ve finally allowed themselves to be emotional and feel the most important emotion of all: horniness.
Infinity Guitars - Sleigh Bells: The other day a friend of mine said ‘hey whatever happened to Sleigh Bells?’ and guess what: they have five albums and continue to release new music as recently as last year. They seem to steadfastly refuse to advance their sound and you’ve got to give them props for that. When nobody else sounds anything like you the smartest thing you can do is double down on your own weird thing. I’ve always loved this song and am totally enamoured by whatever mixing trick it is that enables this song to start loud as fuck and somehow finish even louder no matter what volume you play it at.
Hurricane - Bob Dylan: I haven’t watched the Rolling Thunder Revue thing on Netflix yet but I’m excited to because this is a good Dylan era and I’m always down for more footage of the world’s freak Bobby D acting like a maniac. This song is a good example of how have no control over how music is consumed once you release it because this is ostensibly a serious and angry protest song about a great injustice but my greatest memory of it is for at least a month when I was in boarding school a guy in my dorm would play it every morning super loud and we would all yell the words along as we were getting dressed. Having a great time being fifteen and yelling happily about a miscarriage of justice.
Grindin' - Clipse: I started putting together a playlist of songs with super minimal or no pitched instrumentation that almost totally rely on the percussion and the vocals to carry it. Basically the Pharrell special because he did it on this and Drop It Like It’s Hot and I’m sure more songs of his I haven’t heard yet. But also songs like Lipgloss by Lil Mama, Fix Up Look Sharp by Dizzee Rascal, Tipsy By J-Kwon (almost if it didn’t have the baseline) and The Whisper Song by The Ying Yang Twins. There’s heaps more I’m sure. It was a real minimal style for a little while in the mid 2000s and I think it’s great. It gives you so much space in the mix and it’s a great lesson: if the beat is hot enough and you’ve got enough charisma to carry the vocal you don’t need anything else at all.
Rock Lobster - The B-52's: Did you know the guitar in this is tuned CFFFFF? Did you know this song is nearly 7 minutes long? Did you know The B-52s had a hit with this and then didn’t have another hit until Love Shack fully ten years later? Truly everything about this song is insane.
Johnny Irony - Bad//Dreems: I think ‘are you bleeding?’ is my favourite bit of pre-song hot mic dialogue i’ve ever heard. I love the energy of this song, and what a fun throwback it is to I guess reference Lead Belly’s ancient song about doing cocaine Take A Whiff On Me for a new modern twist on a song about doing cocaine.
Girls On Film - Duran Duran: Have you ever noticed how the bass in this song is absolutely popping off? It rocks. I listened to just the isolated bass track on youtube the other day and it’s my new favourite song. I’m having a big moment with this early eighties art-funk thing where someone figured out you could put huge funky basslines into rock music and completely changed the game.
Love - Lana Del Rey: I figured out this month that my vocal range seems to be just Lana Del Rey but an octave lower which is absolutely great news for anyone that wants to hear me sing this song in a cowboy voice in my car.
Want You In My Room - Carly Rae Jepsen: I am absolutely in love with this song and also absolutely furious at it. Absolutely in love with the way it’s written like a duet with herself, trading lines and overlapping and harmonising. The big ascending guitar line that leads into the chorus. I love how horny the lyrics are, I love the very 80s robot voice in the chorus who also wants to fuck. It’s just phenomenal, which brings me to the the think that makes me so furious: this song just fades out? After the second chorus just as the saxophone comes in? Just as it’s getting good???
Genevieve (Unfinished) - Jai Paul: It's just unbelievable how good this sounds. The bass sound. The way the whole mix seems to float around. The cuts to silence that feel like someone took a razor randomly to the master. It all culminates in this frenetic nervous energy that feels like the song could just fall apart and stop at any point. And it does! It just fades to silence and then comes back in as a totally different song near the end before fading away again.
Elephant Talk - King Crimson: King Crimson is on Spotify now and I’m comically striking them off my list of Bands I Have A Grudge Against For Not Being On Spotify. It’s always kind of surprised me that for someone who loved The Mars Volta as much as I did I never really had a big King Crimson phase. I always liked them fine, and I love this song, but I never really sat down and gave them a proper listen. Maybe now they’re on streaming that’s all about to change and my girlfriend will have to suffer accordingly.
Kids In The Dark - Bat For Lashes: Very excited for Bat For Lashes next album if this is an indication of the direction. She's always had a very hazy 80s feeling, so purposefully leaning into it is only going to be great.
CHORDS For Organ - Ellen Arkbro: My favourite lady is back with 15 minutes of rock solid chords. Something I've been thinking recently in regards to Ellen Arkbro and Holly Herndon is people who make pretentious art unpretentiously, truly believing in their process and outcomes but very aware  of and fine with the fact that it's silly, useless or unlistenable to anyone who's not interested. Ellen Arkbro posted a photo of an organ on instagram the other day and wrote "turned out this was one of the biggest instruments in berlin and it was also connected up to two other organs in the same space. Despite that I ended up playing an extremely quiet version of my music. I don't really know how that happened. I will play a louder version in st giles cripple gate in london this saturday if you're around" She posts like Courtney Barnett about her experimental organ drone music, I just love it. As for the music itself I don't really know how to explain this other than if you let it it can be extremely overwhelming. It's also the closest I've come musically to Malevich's Black Square and how I feel about that, which is hard to explain properly other that to say I love it.
SWIM - Holly Herndon: I'm obsessed with this Holly Herndon album. It's just amazing though I think the marketing and a lot of the writing about it is sort of.. misleading? There's a lot of emphasis being put on the machine learning and AI aspects of it, which as undoubtedly good and cool as they are, are sort of overshadowing what's so good about this in a simple way which is that it's just choral music for the future. It feels like it reaches so far back and so far forward at the same time it's incredible.
Too Real/Television Screens - Fontaines D.C.: I really had to stop myself from putting the whole Fontaines DC album on here because quite literally every single song on this is amazing. Just when you think guitar music is well and truly dead it pulls you back in!! Also the way he says 'aaa' at the start of Too Real just absolutely kills me.
Dangerous Match Ten - Scientist: I forget where I read it but some bass player was saying she learned to play by listening to Scientist albums, and so that made me listen to Scientist for the first time and go on a long dub trail and have a very good and dangerous day where I thought “..what if I become a dub guy?”. It’s very good. I don’t know anything about dub really, we don’t really have the jamaican population here for it to have any cultural currency like it does in america and the UK so my biggest exposure is the Dub radio station from GTA III and San Andreas which I’m now learning was mostly made up of Scientist songs anyway. Anyway dub is good, please keep an eye one me and watch as this playlist evolves into me becoming an evangelical dub guy over the next few months and start calling everyone m’brethren in a racist way.
Lipitor - Longmont Potion Castle: Lipitor. This is unfortunately unavailable on Australian spotify which is a crime but if you're from anywhere else please enjoy.
A Lot’s Gonna Change/ Andromeda - Weyes Blood: I am having such a time with this Weyes Blood album. Yesterday I spent all day playing A Lot’s Gonna Change over and over and over and today I spent all day listening to Andromeda over and over and learning how to play it. I suspect this will happen to me with the entire album, it has a complete hold over me.
I’ve listened to Weyes Blood before and she’s never really grabbed me and so it took a lot of people rhapsodising about this one to get me to give it a go and I’m so glad I finally did. This album really took me by surprise, and looking back now I love the development of her sound: from her original spacy noisy thing to the bonafide soft rock of Front Row Seat To Earth to this - an expensive sounding 70s singer songwriter pop album of absolutely devastating beauty and inventiveness.
Wasting My Young Years - London Grammar: I think what's so interesting about this song is that it sounds like an acoustic cover of a trance song. I don't really know how to explain it better than that. The way the deceptively fast four on the floor drums come in, the sort of adult-contemporary The XX instrumentation, the whole structure of it, it feels like a BBC Live Lounge cover of some forgotten rave classic. I love it regardless but it's an odd song as well.
Left Hand - Beast Coast: Beast Coast is lames and I didn't make it more that halfway through the album. On the fourth song there's a verse where one of these guys is doing that rap thing of talking way to graphically about eating pussy. He says lick lick lick it's gross. Anyway this song rocks though. The beat is that perfect mix of hard as hell and a little bit spooky and I love any song where one million guys do like four lines each.
Hung Up - Madonna: In the wake of not listening to Madame X I've been reflecting on how it's been 15 years since Madonna's last true banger, Hung Up, and in my opinion she's a legend forever for this song alone. Do you remember the Madonna x Gorillaz performance at the 2006 Grammys? Where she walked BEHIND the hologram? She still has so much to teach us.
Never Fight A Man With A Perm - IDLES: I love just how purely sweaty man muscle this song is. 'concrete to leather' are you kidding me?? That's the coolest shit I've ever heard. 'You look like you're from Love Island' also quite good.
Speakers Going Hammer - Soulja Boy: I was listening to this the other day and had to keep stopping and rewinding because of how advanced the flow is when he says 'Style swift hot like it's July 10th/Fly chick in my whip with nice tits/Her boyfriend paid for it, I didn't" he's like five minutes in front of the beat and combined with the internal assonance it just sounds sick as hell.
African Woman - Ebo Taylor: Man goes ham on toy piano must see
(I’m Not Your) Stepping Stone - The Monkees: My friend Tiana (who I've mentioned twice now!) came to band practice and said she saw The Monkees last night. I thought no, that's impossible. The Monkees are all long dead, forgotten legends from a forgotten age. BUT I was wrong! Michael Nesmith and Micky Dolenz, the surviving Monkees tour to this day! And she introduced me to this great song which we learned for the band! Monkees forever!
Whoo! Alright! Yeah! .. Uh Huh - The Rapture: Somehow as time goes on this song becomes more and more important to me and more and more groovy.I used to think life’s a bitter pill but it’s a grand old time. Now that’s wisdom.
World Of Stone/Loinclothing - Hunters And Collectors: I've been getting very heavily into early Hunters And Collectors over the last couple of months.  I think I put Loinclothing on last months playlist as well but fuck it, it's great. It's so primal and raw it feels like the first caveman who learned to talk fronting a band of cavemen who sing songs about caveman issues and passion. I love the incredibly wide open sound the drums and bass have and the fidgety guitar combined with the unhinged vocals creates this really unique ambience of menace and power without ever getting particularly busy and losing the spaciousness. Feels like yelling about monkeys on a wide open desert plain.
Coisa No. 10 - Marcello Gonçalves and Anat Cohen: I found this song ages ago on ABC Jazz I think, and I absolutely love the intricacies of it. It twists and folds in on itself over and over and over without ever losing the groove or relaxing into anything easy. There's so much tension in it even though the melody and groove are so fun, it's a great mix. I also found out it's from an album that's a tribute to someone I'd never heard of before named Moacir Santos, so I got the great joy of discovering his music via this song as well.
Monologue/Nana - Moacir Santos: Moacis Santos, as I understand it, was one of Henry Mancini's film composition assistants and also the guy that taught all the Boss Nova geniuses like Sergio Mendes. I love this Monologue where he tells the story of a mystical vision that inspired this song, which you assume being inspired by a vision would be of mythical importance and weight and but instead sounds like the theme to a cartoon about a grandma who has superpowers.
Weird People - Little Mix: I need more info about the identity of the robot voice in this song. What is his relationship to the singer. He starts off antagonistic: “get off the wall” then commenting on what happened to her: “fell off the wall” then just echoing her: “on the other side” then becoming her “i’m living my life”. It’s complicated and hard to explain but I believe the robot voice in this song is god. Anyway this song is a masterpiece. It’s an incredibly goofy and great piece of 80s revival that imagines a glorious alternate future where Oh Yeah by Yello is the template for all pop music.
3 Legged Dog - Marisa Anderson: Marisa Anderson used to write songs with words here and there among her instrumentals but it seems that over the last couple of albums she’s decided to stick to instrumentals only which I think is a shame. She’s obviously brilliant at it but I’d hate to be missing out on beautiful little slices like this. I love how small time this song is, it feels like a song you’d sing to yourself more than a song for anyone else.
Nighttime Suite - Adam Gnade & Demetrius Francisco Antuña: Adam Gnade is a guy I’ve been following for about ten years now who seems determined to stay obscure. He self-releases all his stuff in limited editions or on cassettes, some of my favourite things he’s ever done don’t seem to be available anywhere digitally any more (if they ever were). I remember years ago he seemed hard up for cash and he ran a deal on his website called a ‘lifetime subscription’ where if you sent him I think $100 he would send you everything he’s ever done AND would continue to send you everything he made in the future for the rest of his life. It was absolutely great, I would get CD-Rs and tapes and zines and things delivered randomly to my mailbox every so often for a couple of years and they were all fantastic. I guess at some point my lifetime subscription lapsed because he’s released a bunch of stuff I haven’t heard or read but that’s ok, you shouldn’t be able to buy someone’s eternal soul for $100.
Adam Gnade has developed his own style of folk music where he just recites a sort of prose poetry over music and it’s incredible. In the hands of anyone else it could feel overly pretentious, and he pretty often rides that line. He’s reaching for a sort of poet laureate of Americana ideal but very often he actually grabs it. His writing is great and magnifies the minor details of normal life into larger symptoms of the American mindset, like depression-era songs of marginalised and exploited people individualised and updated for the modern era. Most of the time he backs himself on a lazily strummed guitar or banjo and his music sounds like sitting on the front step or laying down in the tall grass, but for this song he’s teamed up with Demetrius Francisco Antuña for some real Godspeed feeling dark soundscapes and it’s really something.
We Are The Same - Lurch And Chief: I think it's a damn shame that Lurch And Chief broke up before they even put an album out because this song is a damn classic and I have begun praying every day for the return of Lurch and/or Chief. I love a big voice and there's two distinctly huge voices in this song fighting for position.
983/Near DT, MI - Black Midi: Fucking hell I love this Black Midi album. I'm so, so glad it exists. It feels like the next generation of the Slint Hella, Tera Melos etc lineage of math rock and I simply can't get enough of it. Pump it directly into my veins I'm obsessed with it.
Take Control - Amerie: I just screamed out loud in my car hearing this song for the first time because it samples Jimmy, Renda Se by Tom Zé one of my absolute favourite songs ever. And samples it amazingly, totally transforms it into something new while keeping the spirit of the original. Do you ever feel like a song was just made for you personally? It’s a very kind thing of my vlogger wife Amerie to do for me but I guess that’s just how she is. Also, thanks to Spotify’s new feature where you can see the actual credits for songs I got to find out that Hall And Oates are credited on this because it basically interpolates the the whole verse melody from You Make My Dreams Come True which I didn’t even realise until I looked up why they were credited.
Unsquare Dance - Dave Brubeck: Dave Brubeck's brain is huge. I can't belive it's possible to make 7/4 this funky. How come nobody else ever ripped off this rhythm? It deserves to be a whole genre. I also totally love the piano solo near the end where it turns into like a funky 7/4 stride and then abruply ends with a shave and haircut like it's 1925.
Suddenly - French Vanilla: Get a load of this fucking slice of dance punk that Discover Weekly served me up. I haven't even listened ot the album yet because I just love this song so much I'm stuck on it. Singing "I like the nightlife! I'm in the spotlight!" like you're being hunted with a knife? Incredible. The impromptue glossolalia about halfway through? Incredible. Everything about the saxophone? Incredible
Maneater - Nelly Furtado: There's nothing deft or subtle about Timbaland. Everything he does is just so heavy handed and thick. The drums in this are so straightforward and they sound like garbage cans.. Nothing ever plays at he same time as anything else . It's like a gorilla learned to play and it's absolutely fucking sick. And then the whole rest of the song! His insanely thick buzzy synth lines against the big beautifully stack clean harmonies
I, The Witchfinder - Electric Wizard: I've been getting back into Skyrim because I have a little worm living in my brain and I've discovered a good trick is to turn off the game music and turn on Electric Wizard instead. It increases the ambience because it feels like if you did an x-ray of the Dragonborn's head this is all that would be in there. It's just stoner metal in there and no other thoughts.
Music Sounds Better With You - Stardust: Can you believe how lucky we are to live in a world where the greatest song ever written is finally available on spotify? You can just listen to this any time of the night or day and immediately improve your life.
Don’t Chew - Spilled Oats: Here’s a very good and underexplored idea: what if guitar music but it sounds like chopped and screwed? Absolutely dynamite.
As an extra bonus treat here the absolute best ever chopped and screwed channel I’ve found on youtube, please explore Scobed & Robed: https://www.youtube.com/user/scottalexanderburton

G-Eazy   -   Achievement
Artist - G eazy
G eazy also known as Gerald Earl Gillum or just Gerald uses music to tell story get lit and get things of his head. As a child g Eazy started making music and rapping to look cool to pick up all the girls because one of his friends was doing it around the same time and it was working. He is a different rapper in the american / UK scene and his style changes from each album and this is what makes him good because he is always changing emotions and you can tell this in his different albums.
He is most commonly used a a sex icon and in most peoples heads he is seemed to be hot. Most of his songs talk about a girls and picking them up but some of his songs have a deep meaning and this was more when he was  younger and this is what the song is to g eazy this is one of his first songs to hit 1MIL views because he used to upload his work onto YouTube.
Tumblr media
Old G-Eazy- when Gerald first started on the scene he made music for one and to get girls this was seen to be a joke at the time but because he loved it so much he changed it into his life and passion this is because of the people around him who helped him out in music. In most of his songs he always mentions his day 1 friends who has been on his back and who has helped him out. i think that people started to like G is because of his classic choose in beats as well as his laid back bars and his sound . Most hip-hop fans wouldn't call him lyrical because he doesn't have Kendrick bars and deep meanings but he did have flow and he did catch a lot of peoples attention. This was because of how he didn't give a fuck in what he said and he gave his opinion and for that people loved him.
The dark History in G-Eazy- it may sound all fun and good in most of his music but in some songs he tells story about his past experiences and some of them are life changing to him as a person. he talks about the matters that are close to him which most people wouldn't and this is very different compared to other rappers because he shares his hard life story with everyone in his songs. For example.
Everything Will Be OK - This song is about his parents braking up and him having to leave his old life behind to live with his grandma at a young age. As well as all of this it covers how he found his mums girlfriend dead on the floor after overdosing on pills because of her depression.
G-Eazys work and rap game- starting as a producer and making beats for his mates then becoming and rapper makes a huge different in his path in life and this is good because he knows how to make beats as well as to rap, as well as studying in Loyola University New Orleans doing music he is a real musician in the game. His flow and rap style is mainly because of where he came from  California with the beats being child back as well as weed more common then drinking there was a huge target audience for chilled songs with a good flow.
G-Eazy made it with no record label just uploading his mix tapes and trying to sell his things on the street and placing stickers all around New York and other places. He also vlogged / filmed his come up in the rap game.
His rap game started with mix tapes this is where he just put up loads of singles into a tape for fun as well as to try to get his name out.
Tumblr media
This was in 2008 and was the first come up. he also made 3 other mix tapes the next year and his first album . Mix tapes-  Sikkis on the Planet ,  Quarantine , The Tipping Point
As well as this he made his first album The Epidemic LP
Tumblr media
Then he tried to grow his name out with more mix tapes and rapping on features with close friends that was in his music class.
Then he released BIG this was the first mix tape that you can digitally download.
The time it all change - At the moment G is not known and has not had any big hit songs. but its all about to change.
this is because of his 2 mix tape  The Outsider and  The Endless Summer - these are the types of songs with child out beats and was upload to you tube and got G the social media followers it got his style and people knew his flow.
Tumblr media
The outsider-was dropped on march 2011 around winter and when he dropped this mix tape for digital download and showed everyone his style this mix tape had 12 songs on them and they was remix / covers over well known beats with his style dropped in there. But because of this mix tape blowing up he made another one.
Tumblr media
Endless summer-was also dropped in 2011 and this was a classic for G-Eazy fans with the best flows and the beats this was the first time G would do a tour for any mix tapes and this was the first of many to come this also started a story of g eazys film making team where they would film the tour and edit it for you tube.
Tumblr media
This was his first massive hit and one of his first albums that made massive waves for g eazy this was because of his last buzz and his tour the fans was hyped for his new album and rightfully so this was one for the fans and carried on his old school swag and kept all of his points that his old fans loved about him. But this album also showed that G could rap on deeper beats and can talk about different subjects this album is his ‘I SHOWED YOU’ to all the haters. this lyrics that say ‘i have been slept on for years’ and the whole song ‘must be nice’ makes me compare his old life and how he is making it in the music. As well as this G Eazy showed his passion for music by making all the beats on the whole album. The album did so good that it got a GOLD
This is where he new he has made it in the music scene and stopped doing mix tapes and wanted to focus on making the best music he can and this worked very good because as he was doing this he signed to a one of the best record labels RCA this has some of the most well known musicians to the scene including- Elvis Presley , Chris Brown , Aretha Franklin , The Beatles , Britney Spears , David Bowie , Snoop Dogg , Whitney Houston This shows that they have a good eye in music and whats going to be popular and they was 100% right.
Tumblr media
This was the first massive album so big it did platinum and blew g eazy up as well as this this album got him on tour with drake and lil Wayne this was massive for g eazy and it made a massive difference because now he can make a mark in music and it did. This was his first label helping G out with a album and you would of thought it would of changed things but he stuck to his old roots of flexing pulling girls and smoking weed which the fans loved. This came out in 2015.
Tumblr media
This album was his best one and this is because of the songs and how they all show a story as well as that you can look into his life and his story and how he feels about his life. He talks about the grind and he also goes back to his old topics of girls and weed as well as that sticking to his roots. Most of the songs on the album are story's about the grind and how his life has changed and he keeps it real and that is why his fans love him.
this identity through the prism of the sounds of the moment: mostly the sadness of Drake and soberness of Kendrick Lamar. It was a decent first offering, but the music had no pulse: It was carefully dressed mannequin rap, standing stiff without feeling. His sophomore effort When It's Dark Out makes a lot of the same mistakes: This is a deliberately serious record that refuses to play to his strength, a sharply turning flow that pivots on his buoyant pronunciations, which are naturally comical. Instead, it opts to move cautiously and without jest. It's fitting that one of the singles is titled "Sad Boy" because that's the plainest way to express the basic idea of this record: Even something as cool as being famous can be humourless and miserable.
This also got a billboard number 1-‘Me Myself And I’ also hit  5× Platinum in the first year now its 8xs Platinum.
Tumblr media
This is his most resent albums and is a fight between himself he says there are 2 sides to him G-Eazy the one that raps about drugs girls and has not fucks and then there is Gerald the chill person who just wants to have a girlfriend and be normal. This album wants to make Gerald be more out there and now he has a girlfriend in this album he is all grown up and now wants to talk about real things. As well as wanting to try to tell story's this can be seen in ‘Eazy’ where he is talking to his younger self.
Now G-eazy - has changed the music game and coming up as a white rapper is very hard and he is now showed the public that hes not just everyone else and he can make a dent in the music scene.
Now with may hit songs right now ‘No Limit’ and ‘Him & I’
With more then 17Million monthly listeners and 7.2 million on Instagram. With a short film coming out soon telling a story about the album and they both link this is the first time anyone is doing this and this is why i want to make my music video on g eazy because he is a artiest with a story to every song that he wants to tell and wants to show.

My 10 favorite rap albums of all time: 10: To Pimp a Butterfly (Kendrick Lamar) Some of you out there might get M.A.A.D that I placed this so low on the list or that I picked it over the phenomenal Good Kid, M.A.AD City, but I still believe To Pimp A Butterfly is a funk masterpiece. I remember seeing reviews of it when the record first dropped saying “It sounds like a crazy person broke out of the asylum just to release this album”, but to me, they just don’t get it. The album as a whole, felt so free form and suits Kendrick so much better than what he usually does. Alright is still considered a black pride anthem by many and the single version of “i” is still one of my favorite Kendrick songs today. 9: Lil Uzi Vert Vs. The World (Lil Uzi Vert) Now, before I get hate for this one, I have to go off the record and say that I LOVE Lil Uzi Vert. In a world of Lil Pumps and Lil Yachtys, Lil Uzi is probably the least hated mumble rapper in the game right now. And aside from probably my favorite song of his, “XO Tour Llif3”, Lil Uzi Vert Vs. The World is my favorite thing he’s made. I remember the album catching my attention for the simple fact that the album art was based on the Scott Pilgrim comics’ art style. And this album was actually the first mumble rap album I actually liked. It’s because of it that I anticipated Lil Uzi’s “The Perfect Luv” so much. Though in my opinion, the darker tone that Vs. The World had fit Uzi much better. 8. Free 6lack (6lack) Many respect 6lack for starting out as a rapper and becoming something more. When I first heard Free 6lack and its opening song “Never Know”, I was immediately blown away by 6lack’s flow. It was more than just mumble rap, in fact it was very lyrical. It was more like he was singing. This album showed me and many others just who 6lack was and what he was capable of. 7. The Best of N.W.A (N.W.A) Okay, so this might seem like a cop out, but I was extremely torn between N.W.A’s debut album, Straight Outta Compton and their last studio album, Niggaz4Life mostly because without Ice Cube, Dre, Ren, and Eazy really shine with their word play and DJ Yella gets more time to show off. On the other hand, Straight Outta Compton was great because Ice Cube wrote most of the lyrics masterfully for their first outing. Plus, Express yourself is N.W.A’s best song. Fight me. 6. Coloring Book (Chance The Rapper) I was a huge fan of Chance for reasons that’ll be clear soon. So I was definitely waiting weeks for this album to drop. When it did, I was stunned by the features: Lil Wayne, 2 Chainz, Jeremih, Kanye West, Justin Bieber, D.R.A.M, Lil Yachty. This album is straight up NUTS, but in a Christian way. Within the first hour of this album dropping, people through around the word “masterpiece”. In fact, Coloring Book IS a gospel rap masterpiece. Everyone was going crazy for this mixtape Chance released for free. Not only that, this was the first mixtape ever given out for free to win a Grammy. 5. Acid Rap (Chance The Rapper) “Wow, Hip Hop Historian, you must really like Chance.” Fuck yes I do. Chance is God’s gift to man. This was my first Chance album and it made me fall in love with Chance. The first time I heard the album was browsing SoundCloud and stumbling across “Favorite Song” because of Gambino’s feature. I listened to the rest of the album and now I know the track list by heart. There’s a song here for everyone. Whether you wanna listen to something conscious, you want to vibe, or you just wanna have a good time. And the way Chance starts and ends this album with “Good Ass Intro” and “Good Ass Outro” is simply incredible. IGH! 4. “Awaken! My Love” (Childish Gambino) Putting this on the list was always gonna be controversial. This isn’t exactly a “rap album” but being an album under the genre or hip hop and by a rapper, it qualifies it. Anyway, this is another album where the word “Masterpiece” was tossed around a lot. I could probably attest to that. Although not my favorite Gambino album, and probably Donald’s least favorite album to make, you can’t argue with the results. This album solidified Gambino as not just a great rapper, but an amazing artist. “Awaken! My Love” is quite simply a funk magnum opus. Songs like “Me and Your Mama”, “Boogieman”, and “Riot” instantly stand out to me. “Baby Boy” is a beautiful track, and anyone who hasn’t listened to the sensation that is “Redbone” has never experienced true joy. 3. The College Dropout (Kanye West) Okay, here we get into some real shit for me. No matter what anyone says, Watch The Throne, 808s and Heartbreak, Graduation, Yeezus, and My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy will never compare to Kanye’s first studio release. The College Dropout was the album that got my high school English teacher into rap when he was a teen. Kanye just never released an album more down to Earth than it. In his other albums, it always seems like Kanye’s putting on this persona, while in The College Dropout, we get a side of Kanye that lived a lower class lifestyle for almost 20 years. Because of that, we have songs like “It All Falls Down” and the 10 minute “Last Call” where Kanye just keeps the beat going to tell us all about how much he struggled just for a deal. 2. Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde (Pharcyde) If you asked me what my favorite old school hip hop album was, I’d tell you it’s Bizarre Ride. If you asked me my favorite Pharcyde member, I’d say Fatlip. No, wait! Imani! This album just has so much variety to it. From the funkadelic Soul Flower Remix to the slow and impactful Passin’ Me By. A copy of both Bizarre Ride and LabcabinCalifornia need to be locked away in a vault for safe keeping. Pharcyde in general are essential to the history of hip hop and are one of the most important rap groups ever. I could honestly geek out and quote this album forever until I die. 1. Because The Internet (Childish Gambino) Now, I don’t mean to ride on Donald Glover so much, but not only is he my favorite rapper, but he’s my idol. He does it all. From movies, to tv, to standup. And all of that really shows on this album. Alongside the album came a short film written by Gambino named “Clapping For The Wrong Reasons”, and a companion piece to the album in the form of a screenplay also written by Gambino. The screenplay and all it’s mysteries have to be my favorite part of the story to this borderline rap concept album. I know I said Bizarre Ride had variety, but this album is on a whole ‘nother level. From songs everyone knows like the heartfelt “3005”(which has my favorite music video ever) to the silly “Sweatpants”, there’s so many gems in this gold encrusted diamond of an album. And along with Bizarre Ride, Because The Internet is one of the albums that I know every single lyric to. Plus, this album has my favorite Gambino song ever, “Crawl”. And I’d just like to point out that when Chance had Gambino featured on Acid Rap, he let him rap a whole verse and take over one of the choruses. But when Gambino has Chance featured on “The Worst Guys”, he has Chance repeat the same five words over and over again. I love Gambino to death. Because The Internet isn’t the cleanest album ever, in fact it’s sloppy and seems rushed together in hindsight, but that’s just it. This album represents Childish Gambino’s down to Earth starving artist phase and that’s something I can relate to heavily. I love Because The Internet.

reverse idol jungkook
Tumblr media
i always write for jungkook and yoongi but lmao i like writing for them the best so here we go…
anyway im offended nobody wants to talk about the ketchup song, i bet jungkook wouldn’t play me like that
okay so this is a reverse idol au wow
which means that you’re an idol, wow, surprise
i think for all of them it would be fun to do different kind of groups but idk for this one im going with the flow
im debating whether to make everyone in a kpop group because i mean most of us probably don’t live in korea so like…
you’re in a pop group though, we can start there!! your group isn’t like super popular, but you just released a single that topped a lot of charts and so now you’re getting a lot of positive attention and a wave of new fans!!
jungkook has been a fan from the beginning though wow surprise…
he was probably the fan that got hooked back in the predebut days (so are you kpop??) and he was the one that made shitty gifs on his moms desktop and uploaded the to the good old tumblr
from the beginning you were his fave tho like there is no denying that
you had a certain charm about you, and you always seemed so pure and innocent and you always were so open with your other members
like throughout all your mini video diary updates, you were always the one making sure everyone in the group got adequate speaking time and got to talk!!
and you’re always helping the other members when they’re struggling with a dance move or with some lyrics, like it’s so obvious that you’re the one who makes sure the rest of your members feel comfortable with what they’re doing??
yah that’s you and wow jungkook has the hots for you
just like my dad thinks winwin is hotter than flames smh
your group at this point, maybe like, you’re just coming up to your year mark??
and jungkook has been loyal all 365 days of this year and he’s like
he makes a cake??
he like makes this cake and it looks awful and later yoongi chokes on it and has to go to patient first lmao yikes
but like he gets so excited about you guys hitting your year anniversary that he bakes this cake with lots of icing and twenty times more sprinkles than that right??
and he puts like happy 1 year in really crappy writing on the top with some icing and he puts whip cream on too it looks wild to say the least
and then he puts some candles on for like the birthday of your group wow
not like i do that or anything when my bias has a birthday,,, haha,,,
okay but he uploads a picture of the cake to twitter and tags you guys or whatever idk how twitter works, im stupid
but like a lot of other fans start retweeting it or something because while comical, the gesture is really cute and sweet and kind of touching??
jung-
when did i stop saying jeongguk did i say this already
anyway jungkook gets all flushed because wow there are a lot of people talking about his cake
and guess what guys
guess what the heck what
you of all people retweet the tweet and you add a comment like “omg this is the cutest thing, thank you so much sweetheart!!”
and jungkook checks his twitter
and he just kinda
he screams and he kinda doesn’t mean to but he throws his phone and he’s shrieking and his mom comes down like boy i will beat you with a candle if you don’t shut up and his brother records his meltdown
he calls jimin and tae and the three of them scream and cry together omg like tae and jimin are the hypemen while jungkook has a come apart
he probably is one of those people that walks when he’s excited so he’s on the phone doing laps around the house and his lil puppy is trailing along all excitedly
after three hours of talking to the boys (i remember when i used to talk on the phone for three hours omg) he heads up to his room
where he promptly goes to his shrine of your group and like cries over it and hugs all three of your mini albums to his chest
he probably has like seven posters of you omg can you imagine
he would be the one to get shy when like he changes and all the posters are staring at him or something…
oh his mom probably would like come in his room all the time and if your clothes were too tight or something, his mom would cover your poster in sticky notes and jungkook would be like “mom plz you don’t understand it’s a looK”
jungkook omg also we all know my boy can draw right
he would be one of the crazy good fanartists that posts his drawings of the group (but mostly you)
and after the cake incident, his work and art gets so much more attention like he becomes a fairly popular fanartist for your group
for his birthday btw, yoongi and hoseok come together to write the worst, most cliche, cringy reader insert fanfic of you for him and he keeps it under his pillow every night
okay but also after the cake incident, you kinda sorta stalked his twitter account and you flipped out over how amazing his artwork is and all your group members crack up because you can spend hours just checking out his account and trying to somehow low key print pictures of the art
im watching a documentary in spanish yikes sorry im distracted
okay anyway your group
your group announces like a special one year anniversary meet and greet to thank the fans who have supported you guys for this time and all
jungkook is in school when he gets the notification on twitter and he loses it in class like the world is caving in around him and his teacher sent him down to the principals office because he was causing controversy
oh btw his binders at school are probably cute collages of your group thanks bye everyone
okay anyway
tbh probably tells the principal about the meet and greet
and the principal just kinda “okay…”
jungkook goes home that day and he is on cloud nine right this boy is having the time of his life like his heart has never felt lighter and he has never felt more alive in his life
he practically skips home from school (like winwin did when they played duck duck goose someone hold me)
and he bursts through the door and the smile on his face is so wide and so bright that his brother goes and gets some sunglasses
and he’s like “mom, dad, guess what! they’re having a meet and greeT”
his parents kinda exchange looks and they’re kinda !!
“well how much is it honey?”
and jungkook’s smile falters because he knows that guess what, his family doesn’t really have that kind of money right now, and the only way that he managed to get all his albums and posters was because he’s been saving up birthday and new year’s money and all
and he keeps that same smile on his face because jungkook doesn’t share his emotions and jungkook doesn’t let people know how he’s really feeling and he doesn’t want his family to know that the air has literally been stolen from his lungs
he just kinda shrugs and his voice is all quiet and he’s like “oh… it’s nothing important, i shouldn’t have mentioned it. sorry.”
he heads upstairs before he starts crying because jungkook like really got his hopes up??
and your music really speaks to him and he’s kind of developed this emotional dependence on your group and you guys never fail to make him smile and you always get him up when he’s feeling down and he just wishes that maybe he could somehow tell you all how important you are to him and how much you’ve done for him through your music and all!!
he goes upstairs and he locks himself in the room he shares with his bro and he just cries into his pillow
it’s the weekend right and that next morning he doesn’t get out of bed and he doesn’t leave his room
he won’t even open his phone up because he doesn’t wanna see everyone talking about the meet and greet he can’t go to
he’s not mad at his parents or anything, he’s just defeated like he’s loved you (guys) from before day one and now the chance to express that is slipping through his fingers
boy howdy someone is not happy with this
it’s min yoongi
surprise
he’s like i cannot not let my love,,, i cannot let this happen
like jungkook had called jimin and tae eventually and cried to them and they immediately told the other boys
and yoongi was like oh heck no my baby gets what he wants
imagine the kermit meme but with yoongi
yoongi: i gotta show the boys im cool and poised and don’t give a shit
yoongi to yoongi: buy jungkook meet and greet tickets
tbh he totally plans on doing it
like he researches it all and he figures out when they’re going on sale and that night (it’s like a week after the entire meltdown), the boys wanna go out to the karaoke bar or something
and yoongi is like i’m at work
and namjoon is like wth you’re laying on our couch
and yoongi is like “did i stutter kim namjoon do you want me to shove a hairbrush down your throat when you’re sleeping”
i just burnt my peanut butter toast and i wanna die tbh anyway
yoongi gets them, surprise!! well one for jungkook but like you get it
and he’s so proud of himself he is like i am the best in the world all hail min yoongi, king of spoiling his friends
he wants to wait to give them to jungkook but he cannot hold the excitement in so one day he just kinda heads over to jungkook’s house and traipses on in and jungkook is doing his calculus homework or something
and yoongi just shoves the ticket in his face and jungkook blinks and then he slowly realizes what’s up and he stares at yoongi then bursts into happy tears
fudge you two havent even met
okay so the day of the event jungkook probably wears a bias shirt with your name on it and he is alive okay like he brings his albums and his drawings of you to give to you because lil bun wants to like impress you??
he probably writes a note to you as well talking about how happy you make him and he’s like wait that’s creepy but jin is like no my child, no it is perfect and beautiful just like you and then he kisses jungkook’s head
the boys wait outside the event and they all have matching bomber jackets and sunglasses to be the jungkook protection squad
jungkook dies when he gets in there right
like there’s so much noise and chattering and people and he’s so uncomfortable and stressed tbh and he doesn’t feel good like he starts to panic
what if he like embarrasses himself?? what if he makes a fool of himself in front of you?? what if he like passes out or something or like gleeks oN YOU OMG
he’s like dying in line but he can’t help but keep checking you out the entire time and you are even more gorgeous in person and you aren’t even up close and personal yet…
he feels like he’s gonna die but the boys keep texting him reassuring messages and all he starts to calm down
he’s gripping everything so tight his knuckles go white
omg his turn though
he talks to all the members because you are at the end and all
and he’s like so shy and flustered but he manages to talk to them and explain how h’es been a fan from the beginning of time and he talks about all the best songs on the album and his fave choreos!! and he’s so cute and his face is all red and bright and he’s so !!!
okay i have a spanish benchmark so i should be going but
he finally gets to you and he’s like wow time to kms
he can’t even breathe like you are five inches away from him, in the living flesh, smiling like an angel and -
he kinda plops his albums down on the table and he can’t break eye contact with you to save his life and you just kinda laugh and smile wider because he’s so cute and you’re so flattered that like wow look at this cute fan??
but then he slips the drawings your way and he’s rambling on about how cool you are and how you’ve really inspired him to try new choreography and all and how he thinks you’re the most angelic person and all this other stuff
and you’re like !!
and your heart is racing because most fans are like wow you’re so attractive i love you but he’s going in depth about like you as a person and that’s so touching??
all your band mates keep glancing at you guys like suspiciously
you notice the drawings and you’re like wth is tHIS i HAVe SeeN thEsE
“you’re the birthday cake boy omg!!”
jungkook’s eyes widen and his jaw drops because you just admitted you’ve been stalking his twitter and you immediately cover your mouth with your hands and you’re like wth is this,,, i wanna die… what
jungkook just blushes and nods and smiles that cute bunny smile and your heart melts because he’s so cute and sweet and wow this isn’t very good
security isn’t feeling it though and they’re ushering you on so you quickly do like
the idol grab hands thing and you interlace your fingers and smile down at him
“im really glad i met you”
and he’s about to #die because you are like talking about meeting hIM
and you sign his albums real fast and wink before security ushers him on
but then you’re like “wait, i never got your name!”
and he just “jungkook!!”
“I hope to see you again jungkook!!”
you wave and he’s pushed off by security
the boys are in the parking lot and they’re like wth man how did it go and jungkook has the thousand yard stare
jimin shakes his shoulders and tae starts yelling and yoongi is like time to throw down??
but jungkook gets this loopy smile and he’s like “wow i am in loVE. love love. like actual love. like marriage love”
namjoon rolls his eyes and jin is like “young mAN YOU ARE TOO YOUNG”
but tae and jimin are poking through his albums and stuff and tae screams and everyone looks at him and he kinda
“man look at this!!”
in the back of the album is “hey cutie, i think i wanna get to know you more. shit, that sounds weird. i guess im saying, hot chocolate your speed?”
and then this is totally against idol code but im making this au so um
it’s your number and a cute smiley face and heart and jungkook passes out on the sidewalk
and guess what you do get hot chocolate after that
and jungkook is all nervous and embarrassed and he hides behind his face half the time and you think it’s cute…
and you guys text all the time?? like always??
you leak him lyrics and dance vids all the time and he’s like my hero…
you two hang out whenever your schedule permits but he still gets super shy whenever the other members of your group are over omg
they always tease you two as like scandalous and all but you really like jungkook!!
you like him enough to dedicate,,, a love song to him,,, on your first full album,,,
and like one day your group is on a talk show and the host is like so anyone, how about those relationships,,,
and you’re like well my boyfriend and i are-
and you’re like oH SHIT
and the boys are huddled around jungkook’s laptop, watching, and jungkook’s heart shatters because you have a boyfriend… since when…
and yoongi is like pal,,, buddy,,, amigo,,, it’s yOU
you guys officially get together in the dance studio really cheesy with help from your group mates and it’s so nice and wonderful and you guys always kiss and cuddle when you’re supposed to be rehearsing oops,,,

How Childish Gambino Attacks Symbolism in 4 Ways
Childish Gambino, aka Donald Glover, is an artist that cannot be categorized into one thing. He cemented his career as a writer on the early years of 30 Rock. He has shown off his comedy skills with the show Community and his stand ups. Now with the coming release of “Solo: A Star Wars Story” he will have left his mark in the acting world as well. Oh yeah! He’s also one of the most talented rappers of this generation.
Using a style he calls “Black Rock”, Childish Gambino’s lyrics cover race, gender, sexuality, and more. Through this his rap career has soared but in recent years, due to his juggling of crafts, he’s been a little absent from the rap world in recent years. With his SNL live performance of “Saturday” and “This Is America” he has come back full swing, especially with the music video of the latter.
“This Is America” has blown up on social media. The symbolism in the video and the lyrics of the song have have got many posting, reposting, and commenting on what it all means. However, the symbolism goes a little further than just the lyrics and the visuals. Childish Gambino actually attacks symbolism in 4 ways. Let’s break it down.
youtube
Beat
Commonly the first, sometimes second, thing to be created in a song the beat hold symbolism. In the new track opens with a choir vocalized noises accompanied by a shaker. It’s quite reminiscent of “We Know The Way” from Disney’s Moana, both giving a sense of happiness and family friendly partying.
This is later stacked first with a guitar then once the beat and trill moves in it starts to morph into a trap beat. Then with an abrupt gun shot the chorus that kept the song family friendly is deafly silent. Only the trap beat continues with a recurring eery trill that brings to mind an insect tunneling into a skull (at least for me). This beat continues for awhile until the defining tone, similar to that of a horror film, slowly build and brings back the happy choir while dropping the scary tone. Once more it disappears leaving the trap beat until finally it returns this time the tone remains and the choirs vocals are chopped.

From a musical stand point you can see a story of happiness being unexpectedly stopped. The chaos preceding runs ramped and once things become to get worse happiness returns. However, the happiness is fleeting and upon its second rising it is not whole and not without signs of worsening.
When considering the title of the song the beat alone can express the social rise and fall of America. It can be seen to symbolize a number of downfalls that the country has faced both economically and socially. It’s when you consider more of the song that you get a clearer picture.
Tumblr media
Style
Childish Gambino’s rap style is eclectic. Like is career it can’t be classified as one thing. It is a collectection of conscious social issues spat in his own comical way, but the way in which he does so can be compared to Kanye West as much as Andre 3000.
However in “This is America” his style is more reminiscent to the current rappers. His excessive use of rap ad-libs (from featured artists 21 Savage, Young Thug, Slim Jxmmi, Blocboy JB, and Quavo) like “yeah” and “woo” cement the comparison to artists artists like Lil (fill-in-blank), Migos, and more who are dominating the Billboard Top 100. Though he does claim to be influenced by some of those artists and has released other tracks using the style it seems a little convenient in this track.
I’ll talk about the lyrics later but the song is basically an exaggerated look at the current conditions of American violence, stereotypes, and society as whole. What better way is there to make a critique on the matter than giving an example? He is essentially representing today’s society by example. This is true for not only the style but the trap beat he’s using as well.
youtube
Lyrics
Now for the meat of the matter, the lyrics. In the intro the choir is repetitively singing “yeah, yeah, yeah, go, go, away” which is later accompanied by Childish and Young Gun singing how they want to dance, party, and make money for you. Many have mentioned that this intro can symbolize how black men have to become palatable to white consumers in order to gain fame and money. While this may be true I’m more concerned that this chorus only being in the intro. It seems like an origin story of a man trying to leave the situation he was born in with the support of his community by perpetuating the dance, party, and making money mind-set for said community.
The chorus of the song is seemingly simple. It resonates the topic of the current America. He warns listeners to be careful while boasting about his efforts.
It actually seems to simple to overlook when considering the rest of the song, particularly the boasting. Especially when examining the other recurring chorus “get your money, black man, get your black man.” While this chorus gives reason to the boasting and constant need to continue striving for more, it also amplifies the racially charged intent of the song. The repetitive line which gets chopped into “get your, black man” can also be a foreshadow for the outro. It basically adds an appendix to the topic of the song, This is America – for the black man.
Tumblr media
via: reddit
The first verse reflects the rise of class by his statement “look where I’m living now” while simultaneously expressing the rise of police brutality, gun violence, and continues the theme of trying rise a class higher.
Verse 2 has a pretty hidden meaning. I actually wouldn’t of found it if it weren’t for some deep research. The line is shrouded with talk about Gucci, dancing, drug deals, and hired guns but goes, “this is celly (ha), thats a tool (yeah).” This is said to refer to the shooting of Stephon Clark in his backyard while holding his cellphone which the police thought was a gun in March 18 2018.
Not many songs have intros and outros with lyrics but Gambino decided to add both in this track. While the intro can symbolize black men becoming palatable for society or a man escaping his reality by becoming palatable the outro marginalizes black men. As foreshadowed in the chorus, it compares them to both products that can be gotten and a dog trapped in the backyard. This Is America for black men.

Visuals
It’s time for a quick review of what everyone has been talking about, the music video. There are tons of reviews about the symbolism from the Jim Crow-esque posted above, the burning police car that reflects the BlackLivesMatter conflicts, to the white horse of death symbolizing the apocalypse. But this article has already gotten longer than I expected so I’m going to make a lightning round of all the most interesting bits that makes the video genius.
Tumblr media
When talking about the lyrics of the song I mentioned how the intro and outro of the song told a story about a black man partying and dancing for his community but still being seen as property. Throughout the music video Childish Gambino is literarily partying and dancing as a distraction for the deeper issues the lyrics talked about in the background of the video. This can represent the distraction of social media in a steadily increasingly violent world, the overexcitement of mundanity such as dancing over social issues, or the pressure of black men and women to perform and ignore issues facing their culture. I mean I didn’t see the guy falling from the window or the white horse on my first watch of the video. He genuinely distracted me from so much.
The perpetuation of recent historical violence is constant in this video. There’s the lyrical reference of Stephon Clark mentioned above which coincides visually with a camera pan over black men the chaos on their phones. There’s the choir shooting that refers to the Charleston Church 2015 shooting which can also express the weariness of a black man constantly “performing” for society while remaining spiritual, and even Trayvon Martin’s father look-a-like playing the guitar before getting shot, which shook the same hypocritical fan that sings along to violence. Those are all powerful pieces of symbolism but look at that video and notice the attentive care used for each weapon.
Both the handgun that kills the guitar player and the machine gun used on the choir are taken, placed in what looks like a red silk cloth, and carefully carried away. The guitarist’s body however was just dragged away. Later in the video through the chaos in the background you can see a body falling along with other acts of violence that are completely ignored and brushed aside. This expressed care for guns and disregard for life resonates more as a reflection of society.
twitter.com/thelocalemo/status/993410712407076864
It’s getting long again so here’s the last one. The ending scene corresponding with the outro shows Gambino running in the dark, away from many Caucasians (white people). Isn’t it a little too reminiscent from the running scene in Get Out? If you’re unfamiliar with Get Out it’s the Jordan Peele horror movie that reflects a form of modern day social slavery that features Childish Gambino’s Redbone track. Whether its homage to film or using it as motif it amazingly matches with the outro’s explaination of the black man as a product and trapped dog.

Symbolism
Most artists use symbolism in lyrics and visuals but not many do it in such detail. Childish Gambino does this and more with every aspect of this song. In all 4 aspects of the song he manages to both hide and reveal the truth of the dangers of American violence and stereotypes. It attacks symbolism on every level and may be the best music video of the decade.
Did you find any symbolism not listed?? Let us know in the comments

Top Tracks Of 2017
10. Rico Nasty - Glo Bottles
youtube
The story of DMV (D.C., Maryland, Virginia) rapper Rico Nasty is pretty remarkable. She released her first mixtape when she was 16 and still in high school. At some point during her senior year she became pregnant, however the baby’s father, who she describes as her best friend, died before he even knew he was going to have a child. She sunk into a depression, barely graduated, and was a single mom at the age of 18. After her child was 10 months old she started rapping again, and grinded from obscurity to the soundtrack of the Fate Of The Furious, the soundtrack of HBO’s Insecure, and this year’s top 40 rap albums list on Rolling Stone Magazine. This was all done without the support of a major label. When she talks about things like now having a “new whip every day” you genuinely feel happy for her as a person.
9. Pabllo Vittar - K.O.
youtube
Pabllo Vittar is an openly gay Brazilian drag queen who is now officially the most followed drag queen on Instagram, surpassing even RuPaul. She was bullied in school as a teen for her feminine voice and demeanour, then began doing drag at the age of 18. In 2014 she was discovered via YouTube and made her first television appearance. Her fame began to skyrocket the following year after releasing “Open Bar,” a Portuguese version of Major Lazer’s “Lean-On.” This year Major Lazer compounded her notoriety even further by featuring her in their original production “Sua Cara.” She was also featured on Charlie XCX's Pop 2 album, had the most-in-demand song of Brazil’s carnival, signed an official deal with Coca Cola Brazil, and cracked 100 million plays on both of her single releases. Her heavy usage of LBGTQ-affirming imagery and her vocal criticism of some of the countries conservative figures have made her a rallying point for Brazil's LBGTQ population, as well as those disillusioned with the encroaching conservative political establishment.
8. Lil Pump - Flex Like Ouu
youtube
Seventeen-year-old Florida Rapper Lil Pump is a lot like a Marvel movie. If you go into a Marvel movie looking for something that’s a dead-ringer to the comics you’re going to be disappointed. You have to just interpret each movie as its own thing, independent from the comics. Similarly, when you approach the music of Lil Pump you have to forget about rap music. Forget about Kendrick, forget about Big L and all those other old-head icons, and just interpret this music as existing inside a vacuum. When you do that it becomes more apparent why the sound of artists like Pump and Smokepurpp have become so infectious. A lot of times when artists try to add energy to a track they do so by being obnoxious, with brostep being perhaps the most egregious example of this. These artists, on the other hand, figured out how to create incredibly hype tracks by taking the stripped-down nature of trap music and adding this highly repetitive lyrical delivery. It’s a formula that’s really simple and efficient, and also easy for other Soundcloud rappers to replicate. I see a lot of similarities between the music of Lil Pump and genres like grime and kuduro. Even though it’s built off of hip-hop it’s essentially its own thing. The reason why old-heads are angry is because this isn’t happening in East London or Angola, it’s happening on American soil. Old-heads are shook at the prospect of someone in their own backyard gaining notoriety by yelling the same three words over and over while being associated with rap. Meanwhile the rest of the world is like hey welcome to the club we had this like 15 years ago.
7. Ski Mask The Slump God - Catch Me Outside
youtube
According to Pigeons & Planes, 21-year-old Ski Mask The Slump God is one of the most “inventive and compelling” figures to emerge from the rising school of Florida rappers, and for good reason. If anyone can reconcile the growing gap between old heads and fans of new-school rap it’s him. According to Ski Mask himself he’s lyrical, but not lyrical. In other words he has the intricately crafted wordplay that old heads value, but he delivers it with the based “I don’t really care what I’m saying” aspect of the new school. The music video itself is a testament to his ability to unite both worlds. His decision to rap over the 1999 Missy Elliott and Timbaland beat for “She’s A Bitch” earned praise from Missy Elliott herself. Ski Mask was also praised by Isaiah Rashad, who said he was upset at “how tight this nigga Slump God is.” On the other hand, the video appears on the channel of video producer Cole Bennett, one of the central hubs for the emerging new wave of rap. Two of Ski Mask’s recent tracks, “My Mind” and “Achoo!” have veered off into more experimental territory, signalling that this artists definitely harbours surprises that remain to be seen in the new year.
6. Shy Luv - Lungs
youtube
One time on a 20+ minute drive home I listened to this song on repeat the entire way, then when I pulled up to my house I sat in the car and listened to it like four times, then I went inside and listened to it again. Anytime a song provokes that reaction it's a good indication that it should probably be on some year end list.
5. Lorde - Perfect Places
youtube
Pretty much everyone who listens to music in this solar system was in unanimous agreement that Lorde’s sophomore release "Melodrama" is a masterpiece. This is evidenced by the grammy nomination for Album of the Year, numerous top 10 finishes in “best albums of 2017” lists, and Rolling Stone Magazine comparing her to Kate Bush. For a major pop release it has a tremendous level of depth and intellectualism that far surpasses Lorde’s age of 21.  A problem that some major pop artists face is switching to some trendy micro-genre then sounding unnatural, like the time Justin Bieber threatened to release a dubstep track, the first time Katy Perry did trap, or Lady Gaga going Americana to tap into the normie market. On Melodrama every track sounds like Lorde, and being able to firmly establish such a dynamic musical identity at that young of an age is also a testament to her power level. This could legitimately be the rise of the next Kate Bush.
4. Tei Shi - Keep Running
youtube
In 2015 I listed Argentinian-Canadian singer Tei-Shi’s song “Bassically” as my top song of the year. That track was one of the main reasons why pop music is still one of my most listened-to genres. It represented this whole movement that year of pop music’s indie side coming into the foreground, or of pop music with a high degree of artistic value suddenly becoming visible. At the time, I described it as pop music coming into its own. The same could be said of Tei Shi now, except this time she has an entire debut album “Crawl Space” to back it up. Her music continues to showcase the depth that pop music on the whole can have, and why it’s no longer the anathema of the underground, but an extension of it.
3. Charlotte Day Wilson - Work
youtube
Nylon Magazine called 24-year-old Canadian singer Charlotte Day Wilson “the next best thing out of Toronto.” The Star described her essence as “subdued soul, rich vocal texture and instrumental acuity.” According to Now Toronto she’s become a queer icon in the city, and she hopes to create space for women in music to flourish. I think one of my favourite memories from last year was wandering the streets of Budapest listening to this song on repeat.
2. Austra - I Love You More Than You Love Yourself
youtube
This was definitely a Facebook newsfeed discovery. Austra is a four-piece band from Toronto fronted by Katie Stelmanis. This song is from the group’s album “Future Politics,” and according to the album’s page on Domino Records it’s a “collection of urgent, but disciplined anthems for dancefloor and headphones, [and] asks each of us to remember that apocalypse is not an inevitability, but the product of human decision-making.” Although the write-up goes on to describe the album in ways that make it seem like a manifesto, I definitely heard “Utopia,” the album’s other main single, playing in Earl’s once. It will probably end up on some Netflix show at some point. This is the power of pop music, it can make critical statements but still be accessible at the same time.
1. Lil Uzi Vert - XO Tour Llif3
youtube
Last year, for the first time in history, hip-hop dethroned rock as the most consumed genre in the U.S., and I think it’s largely because of artists like Uzi Vert.
I held off on writing this one for a while because I wanted to actually do research to find out why emo rap in particular seems to have become the soundtrack of the contemporary urban youth. Thankfully I didn’t have to search too far, because this Pitchfork article (link below) perfectly summarizes it.
Unlike gangster rappers and some earlier trap rappers, emo rap has an aesthetic that doesn’t only speak to one demographic, but rather to the struggles that youth often face on the whole. Whereas rap music previously presented black communities as bastions of lawlessness governed by hyper masculinity and street bravado, lines like “Please Xanny make it go away” transcend racial boundaries and redefine the notion of how black men should present themselves in the performance of hip-hop.
In terms of the actual construction of the music itself, I think it’s worth noting that the spacey, atmospheric nature of Uzi Vert’s beats basically came from a subculture on Soundcloud that couldn’t find anything to relate to in their immediate environment, so they turned to the internet. This is evidenced by Uzi Vert citing Marilyn Manson as one of his biggest influences.
These beats, combined with the subject matter, combined with the anime-inspired outfits, mean that emo hip-hop right now is speaking to the largest population segment out of any genre. In 2018 old heads are going to keep being angry at music like this, but while they’re 45-years-old complaining in a basement somewhere, listening to Naughty By Nature, drinking AGD and playing Goldeneye 64, the rest of the world is experiencing rappers like Uzi Vert taking hip-hop to completely new heights.
