Let's get some good shit done: 8/2/23
In the name of encouraging each other, supporting each other, and reminding us all how many ways there are to help - how much each of us can make a difference -
Reply or comment (or add in the tags if you'd really prefer) with something you did recently to help the environment, your community, or people who need it. Big or small.
Here's my version:
I applied to volunteer for a local nonprofit I've known for a while, which teaches shame-free, comprehensive sex ed classes (also queer and trans affirming!) and workshops to schools and home school groups
I started applying to volunteer for the Red Cross (need some extra paperwork to finish the app, since they deal with health info)
This was a bit less recent, but I convinced my parents to start a little compost bin in the kitchen now that our city has finally started collecting composting in green bins. And then dragged my mom out to find a bin that met her high aesthetic standards lol
I'm planning to make this a regular thing (probably weekly) unless this totally flops, so let me know if you'd want that!

CALLING ALL QSMPBLR
We are looking for bilinguals to join our private SMP!
Are you interested in joining a private, small-scale project like the QSMP without the stress of being on stream? Then I have the server for you, Rascals SMP is accepting applications for players and moderators! (Please fill this form out even if you are applying as a player)
(ENG + ESP, FRA, & RUS) (Not exclusively, just these are the only languages we have people who even partially speak)
We are searching for volunteer moderators and players, specifically but not limited to bilinguals who speak the above languages. While we hope to expand in the future, we are a small team of friends doing this for fun. For more info contact 'occultik' on Discord!
Here's a little context:
The experience is heavily inspired by QSMP2024, and we are looking for people who aspire to do something like that(being an egg, npc, etc.) but either just can't stomach being on stream or don't mind a small community. We are a small community of about 20 members (mostly irl friends and extensions of that) aged 16-20 and largely LGBTQIA. We are searching for admins starting in about June of this year, and extending into however long it takes for S3 to end, and even then you are more than likely to be retained for future projects if interested. We are by friends, for friends. None of this is for a profit and any funds gained goes directly into funding the server!

I thought about volunteering at my local library but not only do you have to provide your work history on the application but also two references. Then I guess if they like what they see the library HR department reaches out to you.
All that to do work for free??? 🤦‍♀️ Ridiculous. If I wanted to face that level of scrutiny and rejection I could just apply for actual paying jobs 😒 the animal shelter I volunteered at before didn't pull this shit.

Volunteer Work and Unpaid Internships: What's Legal?
What counts as "employment" might seem straightforward enough... until you're working for a non-profit, or as an intern.
What's the difference between volunteering for a non-profit and working there, besides the allowed pay rate? Can you work 40 hours during the week for your non-profit employer and then still volunteer for them over the weekends, too?
And what's the deal with unpaid internships? They're work, but they're not, and therefore they can be unpaid, despite minimum wage laws? How is that legal? When is that legal?
For that matter, what about those high school programs that involve working for an employer as part of a class? How does that work?
Most of the relevant law here is federal.
When it comes to "for-profit" employers, the Department of Labor has a handy dandy fact sheet explaining the law.
Unpaid internships and student work positions may potentially not qualify as "employees" under the Fair Labor Standards Act, which is the relevant law having to do with minimum wage, overtime, etc.
As per case law, the distinction comes from which party is the "primary beneficiary" of the arrangement. If the intern/student worker is benefiting more from the training and educational experience of their internship than the employer is benefiting from the work that they generate, then they are not considered an "employee" and do not need to be paid under the usual FLSA rules. On the other hand, if the employer is benefiting more from the work they're getting than the intern/student is from the experience, then they're an "employee" and need to be paid accordingly.
The court has made a list of seven factors to be considered when determining who's benefiting more from the arrangement, including things like "The extent to which the intern’s work complements, rather than displaces, the work of paid employees"--in other words, if the work the intern is doing would be done by regular employees if the intern wasn't there, that's a bad sign for the legitimacy of that internship's unpaid status. Other factors include the internship being tied to the school with coursework or credit, having educational training as part of the internship, etc. The intern is supposed to be learning from the internship--that's the whole point.
There are definitely industries where doing non-educational, entry-level work as part of an "unpaid internship" is commonplace, but under the FLSA, that's illegal, and some recent court cases involving big-name employers have involved substantial settlements for "unpaid internships" that didn't follow the FLSA rules.
Some states, like California and New York, have even more restrictive rules about unpaid internships, but the federal rules apply to unpaid internships throughout the United States.
As for non-profit volunteer work, well, the Department of Labor has a handy-dandy fact sheet for that one, too.
The non-profit charitable designation is not the only thing necessary to determine that someone can volunteer there; the volunteer work being done also has to be for a charitable rather than a commercial purpose. The fact sheet specifically mentions that volunteering in a gift shop likely isn't allowed even when the gift shop is for a non-profit organization, because the shop is itself a commercial enterprise and the work being done is commercial in nature.
As with interns/students, volunteer work becomes more suspect if it's displacing work that would otherwise be done by paid employees.
Also, if you work for a non-profit, you can volunteer for your employer outside of your regular work... but not by providing the same type of services you're employed to do. So, if you're employed as a marketer for an animal shelter, coming in on the weekends to clean cages and walk dogs would likely be perfectly fine volunteer work, but coming in on the weekends to draft the shelter's newsletter would likely be considered part of your regular employment, and thus subject to minimum wage and overtime rules.
That last restriction doesn't apply if the place you're volunteering for isn't your employer, though. So, if you're employed as a bus driver for the local school district, you can't volunteer to drive students around for field trips, but you can volunteer to be the driver for your local church's youth group trips, since the church isn't regularly employing you as a bus driver.
Another thing that can make volunteer work suspect is when benefits or bonuses are provided. Volunteer positions "working for tips" are usually breaking the law; things like providing free rounds of golf to volunteer caddies or free memberships/classes to volunteer gym trainers are also highly suspect.
There is some allowance for reimbursing volunteers for expenses incurred by their volunteer work, but this cannot be in the place of regular compensation and cannot include "reimbursements" for expenses that are not actually related to the volunteer work done.

Basic Instinct Chapter 10
A/N: Just a little bit of fluff of Akashi being lovedrunk after the date. Masterpost
Akashi arrived home, still on cloud nine. The date had gone over so well, he could hardly believe it. The two of you were dating, truly, dating. He felt as if he could float. His father wasn't anywhere in sight. Good, he did not want his father to disturb his happy bubble. He went up to the staircase, wanting to go up to his room when he saw Fujioka standing above. "Welcome home, young master." "Fujioka-san!" Akashi greeted, with a warm smile upon his face. "I take it your confession went well. Congratulations," the butler smiled back at him, and Akashi once again felt grateful for the older man. It felt so nice to have someone be happy for him once he came home. "It did. Our first date went spectacularly well, it's a shame it couldn't last longer," Akashi sighed, missing you already. "Young love is such a sweet thing. I remember the first time your father took your mother out for a date. When he and his driver dropped her off at home, she spent the first half hour just sighing at the door, as if she couldn't part her mind off of the event." Fujioka smiled at the memory, and Akashi's own bright smile softened upon the mention of his mother. 'I wonder if y/n is still staring at her door, or out of her bedroom window into the direction I left.' "I am truly happy for you, young master. Now may I suggest a bath and relax after a day of racing emotions?" Akashi nodded, wordlessly drifting his way to the bathroom.
When he woke up that Sunday, he realized he had overslept. With a yawn, he came out of his bed and reached for his phone.
Good morning, I hope you slept well - A
As he send out the text to you, he couldn't keep himself from letting out a dreamy sigh. Yesterday truly had been amazing. He felt happy, knowing he could share his precious first time ever doing things with you as he explored things his father had kept from him growing up. With you at his side, he felt alive. Akashi felt himself practically bouncing off the staircase to go to the kitchen, in order to ask for breakfast. As he asked his cook for two simple pancakes, he started thinking about tomorrow, when he could see you again. He wondered how he should drop the news you were dating. Should he just tell everyone, or subtly hint at it with subtle displays of affection? He kind of wanted to boast to everyone you were his girlfriend now, though. He felt like the luckiest guy in the world, to have you as his own. After carelessly shrugging down his pancakes, he decided to go for a ride with Yukimaru, wanting to tell his best friend all about his succesful date. His tall, white coated friend had his eyes light up at the sight of Akashi and he smiled. "Hey Yukimaru, everything went well with y/n, just as I hoped. So you'll get to meet her soon enough." Akashi cooed with pride, stroking the horse's long nose. Yukimaru whinied softly, almost sounding genuinely enthousiastic. "Yeah? You're going to have to try really hard if you want her for yourself." Akashi teased and Yukimaru grunted. Akashi was grinning as he mounted the horse, and they galloped through the field behind his house, enjoying the scent of the green grass, the trees. He truly couldn't wait to ride with you.
As he went back to the kitchen for lunch, he looked at his phone, noticing a message from you.
I did, thank you! I had a wonderful time yesterday x o x o -Y/N
Akashi smiled at the message, and with a grin he typed back,
Me 2. So, my beautiful lady, what are you up to? - A
It was as Akashi was half-way digging into his lunch that he felt his phone vibrate, and impatiently he immediately checked.
Busy with my volunteering job. I'm wrapping up small gift sets for this elementary school in a very poor district. Things like pencils, cute animal themed erasers, that sort of stuff. - Y/n
Akashi smiled at your answer, his heart melting into a small puddle inside of his chest. 'She has such a lovely, big heart. I doubt I'll ever get over how wonderfully sweet she is.'
I love how you try to do so much for children in need. Your heart is such a pure thing, I am grateful it is mine to love. - A
With his lunch abandoned, all he could do was stare at his phone, awaiting your answer. Thankfully, he did not have to wait for long.
Stop it! I'm practically swooning right now, and I am supposed to be working! I'll see you tomorrow at school, my sweetest prince x o x o - Y/n
And as Akashi texted you back, promising to see you tomorrow, a warm smile passed over his face. This was real. The two of you, were really real. You were his, and he was yours. Talking to you over text, flirting so casually, this was his reality now. Perhaps he was losing his mind all over again, but Akashi couldn't stop himself from screaming out of joy. If the servants and his father cared or disapproved, they wouldn't let him now. Everyone just allowed Akashi to stay in his bubble. Whatever Fujioka had done to convince his father, it had worked tremendously. Akashi felt free to explore the sensations he felt, and whilst it scared him a little, he would not trade it for anything in the whole wide world.

Hey thank you for linking that article about the amphibians road-crossing project! I am making plans to volunteer with them this season. It's just becoming spring here and I've noticed the amphibians beginning their migrations. I've always wanted to do something to help them but never knew how to go about it. Turns out it's super easy to volunteer with this program, so I'm going to gather up some friends and go help some lovely amphibians and the scientists that protect them!
Oh that's awesome! I'm so glad it helped you find a way to volunteer!
Most scientists who do this kind of stuff LOVE having extra hands on deck to help. We usually aren't given a lot of staff so volunteers are a life-saver. It never hurts to reach out and offer a helping hand!

Okay so I’ve been looking at options for employment or education in Finland, and it’s not because I *need* a job right now, but I really do *want* to get started on something other than studying Finnish.
So I’ve been searching and searching for the past 3 days (plus more before that) and I’m not good with my hands or physically capable, so I’d rather want to work with people. So I thought to myself, why not do volunteer work like becoming like a visitor friend for someone (like an elder person or in an elderly care facility, or maybe with children)? But I’m second guessing whether or not I’m qualified for that, since I have *only* been here since late January, and they might want someone with more proficiency in Finnish, plus some might also think it’s very odd that an immigrant (me) wants to become a friend for someone else (usually it’s an already established person who becomes the friend for the immigrant)
Maybe if I can become a friend for someone, I can also better my Finnish skills, and add the experiences to my CV, or at least start proper education in Finland
I think I might tell my teacher on wednesday about my thoughts
