My mum's doing a survey for her BSc Vet. Nursing, so I'm sharing it here, if anyone wants to participate or reblog - link and her post below
Tumblr media
Hi, Have you ever had to have a pet put to sleep? It's such a tough process to go through. 💔
Please can you spare 5 mins to fill in my survey? ( Link above). I'm trying to gather UK pet owners experiences of the euthanasia process.
I'm in my 4th year of a BSc (Hons) in Vet Nursing and am interested in how owners experiences could help vets to improve the service they provide.
If you have lost more than one pet, you can complete the questionnaire more once. ( Any companion animal, including horses and livestock pets)
I'd really appreciate it if you could share this everywhere, the more participants the better.
Click the link and share this post.
Thank you 😊

I've seen this post floating around many Facebook groups for the last few months, and I cannot stress how angry it makes me. Because it is 100% bullshit.
The topic of owners who don't feel able to stay with their pets at the end of their lives for whatever reason is a hot one, and some people will insist there is no excuse for not being present - but there are many reason, not least trauma, phobia, PTSD from previous losses, etc. It is no one's place to judge someone's personal capabilities. And I absolutely reject the suggestion that 90% of owners do not stay with their pet - that is absolutely false.
What upsets me most about this post is the suggestion that animals are "frantic" during their last moments, and that us as veterinary staff would allow this to be the case. Yes, some animals are distressed to be apart from their owners. But those animals are never briskly put down in a state of panic. My colleagues and I go to great lengths to make all of our patients as comfortable and peaceful as possible at the end. Animals without owners are given as many hugs, treats, kind words, love and care as any other. I cannot count how many dogs and cats I have held in my arms and spoken calming words to as they passed. I have had a dog collapse on me because I held him up so he could bury his nose in a treat jar as the drugs were injected. To suggest that we would EVER allow an animal to pass whilst "frantically looking around" is deeply insulting.
Please, if you read any posts like this, do not believe them. Veterinary staff have enough problems with mental health and abuse without this untrue bullshit being floated around.
I just really needed to get this off my chest.

Artist!Yuu: Please tell me twins aren't genetic! Jade just said he wants kids!
Nurse!Yuu: Unfortunately they are.
Marine Biologist!Yuu: Ha! At least Azul isn't a twin.
Vet!Yuu: (giggling)I don't think Leona has twins in his family so I don't expect a litter.
Nurse!Yuu: Let me finish. Multiples are genetic on the mother's side. We are triplets. So I don't know what you two are laughing about. We have the highest odds.
Vet!Yuu: NO!
Marine Biologist!Yuu:I can live that that.

“I want to be a vet” is a common childhood dream… but I’m curious just how widespread it is!
Reblogs are appreciated 🐾

i know vet prices are out of control expensive but it's because the world is expensive, not greed, and so every time i encounter someone complaining about it in bad faith i want to grab them by the hands with shaking, sweaty desperation and say "on average human nurses are paid 30-50 dollars an hour. vet techs, who are nurses of every department and every specialty and also janitors and mma fighters, are lucky to break minimum wage."

I really wish animal keeper/animal care jobs were more well paid. Like working with animals is great but also it's frustrating when people act as if that alone is rewarding enough, I'd like to be able to afford to live too actually

Mommy Group Meeting
Marine Biologist!Yuu!Yuu: Well I bottle-fed Violetta. Azul was very involved so after he started feeding her she preferred the bottle.
Vet!Yuu: Lucky you, there never seems to be enough milk in my house. After Vita was born Nuru wanted to be nursed again at 3 years old and cried when I said no. Then we adopted Kato and he still needed to be breastfed too. Let's not talk about Leona. I don't think I've stopped lactating in 3 and a half years.
Nurse!Yuu: (pregnant) I refuse to breastfeed on principle. I'd rather not risk losing a nip dealing with eel teeth. It's a risky game as is with Floyd.
Special Forces!Yuu: We switched up between nursing and bottle. Worked out for us. Mostly because Rook was incessant that that I had had enough time with the babies as is after carrying them for 9 months and he wanted more time with them.
Nurse!Yuu: How many does that make it for you two? About 4 kids now? I don't think I could take more than one as is. God forbid it's twins.
Jester!Yuu: (currently nursing their twins, Koko and Jojo, tired as hell) Hey, fuck you too.

This could be me. This could be one of my colleagues, one of my classmates, one of my friends. It’s understandable that the original owner is upset over losing her pet, but what she’s done in retaliation is despicable, as is the news station that ran this story smearing our profession. Veterinary professionals should be able to go to work without facing graphic threats of violence against them and their families in return for saving a life in an impossible situation. You wonder why veterinarians and their support staff have such obscenely high rates of depression and suicide? This is why.
If you have a pet, I’m begging you to come up with a financial plan for their veterinary care. Get pet insurance (especially if you’re getting a new puppy or kitten). Start an emergency fund. Have a credit card set aside specifically for this kind of situation. Apply to CareCredit or a charitable fund like the University of Tennessee’s AlignCare if you find yourself unable to cover a bill. Most people don’t have immediate access to $10,000 (which is a reasonable price for the intense level of care this puppy required), so you have to have a plan. And don’t go buy an expensive purebred puppy and then claim you don’t have any money for vet care.
Be kind to your veterinarian. We are hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt from our education while making far less than our human healthcare counterparts. If we were in it for the money, we would have chosen any other career.
