Obsidian Templates For Writers

it is once again Posting About Obsidian time, and I figured I'd do something useful and share some of the templates I've been using in the Valloroth Vault!

I like using templates because then all my info gets organised in a consistent way, which makes using it way easier. Some of these do use a bit of css to make parts work, which I'll link with the template and explain how to use at the end of the post.

Also, some of these shamelessly just riff on the structure of the Forgotten Realms wiki pages because i am who i am and i spend way too much time looking up lore for dungeons and dragons.

Character Page (wiki style)

This is the main profile I use for characters! Here you can see the markdown, the preview, and a fully filled out example. For minor characters, I cut the sections I don't need, but so far for major characters, I find that filling out all these sections is very helpful.

At the top of the page you can see the metadata I use, which is what I've settled on after a few iterations as 'the things I actually want to be able to see and use'. Feel free to adjust/adapt to whatever is actually useful to you!

The cssclass is some tweaks I have for my personal obsidian css, so I've left the classes out in the template for you to add whatever you'd like yourself, or you can remove it entirely.

The 's' tag is to remind me to tag new character with the series they're in, e.g. Aliyne would be 's/rp' because she's from the Renegade Prince series. The 'character-sheet' tag is so I can filter out character sheets in searches or queries if I need to.

Character Page (for writing with)

This is the page I use for tracking a character within a project. I need all the wiki info for character building, but I don't want my plot threads, character arcs, motivations, and other key info lost and buried in there whilst I'm working! This lets me pull out that info into a shorter, easier to read section.

The double :: are for use with the dataview plugin, because that way I can pull them into tables to track with the rest of my book information

Here's an in-use example with Aliyne again. The 'br' tags are to get things to show up on seperate lines whilst still counting as one line for pulling into dataview, so if you're not using dataview you don't have to use those

Country Template

I use the same basic kind of template for all locations, just removing or adding sections as I need. I don't always fill all of these out, it depends on how important the place is and how much worldbuilding/research I feel like doing!

And here's an in-use example, with Zhirasea (very much still wip). You can see how I use tags for organisation here: location and sublocation, and the status of the note. I never use a 'done' tag because it's never done. When something's ready I just use 'active'.

I have a variant of the template for regions, settlements, and buildings as well, just with less categories in each as needed, and then I log which kind it is under the 'type' field in the metadata.

Organisation / Group Template

This one's for fictional organisations! Heavily lifted from the FR wiki but you know what? It works.

Here's an in-use example, with my crime syndicate, the Zarahmin! You can see I added a collapsible callout with the 'Zarahmin Code' in it as well, since this particular organisation actually has a code of conduct.

Chapter Outline

This is a fun one - my current chapter outline! This is very much a living document, but it's what I've found useful for this project so far. It combines a few different outlining methods (MICE threads, Promise/Progress/Payoff, One Sentence Summary) as well as leaving me space to be flexible.

The template contains questions and explanations for various sections of the outline, to remind me what I'm looking for/need to fill in.

I found this most useful after finishing a first draft with a rough outline. It's very much a thing I recommend doing for a second draft, since otherwise you'll bog yourself down trying to have all the details in place.

Here's an example of filled out meta info for the prologue of Renegade Prince:

(I use the section with 'Arcs' to list plot tags using :: dataview queries so I can pull them into tables, but again, if you're not using dataview, you can ignore that part!)

How to use the CSS Snippets

The infobox snippet is part of the ITS theme if you use it, or you can install it seperately by doing the following:

Go to this link and download the 'Callouts.css' file

In obsidian, go to settings -> apperance -> CSS snippets, and open the folder with the little folder icon

Paste the 'callouts.css' into that folder

Hit the refresh option in obsidian settings, and toggle the new snippet to on

it is now installed! any callout you insert with [!infobox] will now display with the infobox settings. if you want to tweak how it looks, you can poke around in the css file and see what happens

Modding

A couple of casual outfits for Ros, using wing's shoes and cubfan's jeans recolors (skinny bitch has her own tight jeans mesh). Shirt on the left is an existing variant of Wakako's that I really liked; right is Denny's that I'm recoloring for her.

Working on importing a jacket for fem V (yeah okay, it's really for Ros). I'm tweaking the mesh now so it works with Veegee's suit, then it's onto normals and textures

Writing

I've had a couple of drabbles that morphed into ideas for photoshoots, which in turn expanded into full scenes I started writing. This is one such drabble-turned-scene because of the pic below. Kinda long so putting most after the cut.

“Do you know what you’re asking of me?” Her brow furrows as she pauses to look at V, as if considering something for the first time. “Of yourself?”

Anxiety flooding her chest, V feels the familiar urge to jump ship at the first sign of trouble and wants to let go, to retreat; but Rosalind squeezes her fingers and holds her gaze, her eyes serious yet soft, keeps her grounded, and V lets out a long breath.

“Maybe not, but be a gonk move to let you leave ’thout saying something, wouldn’t it?”

“Constantly surrounded by Secret Service. Say goodbye to any privacy once media and screamsheets find out, not to mention all the fanatics and anti-government zealots.” 

Rosalind looks at their hands while V wonders what to say. She’d thought about media and screamsheets but hadn’t considered the constant need for security. What would the logistics even look like for dating a sitting President? Maybe this is the gonk move.

“Then there’s the job.” Rosalind meets her eyes again, brow furrowed and lips tugged downward. “The country is first, always. I am always the President.”

That she had expected, and she chuckles softly. “Of course. Look, know what your priorities are, never gonna change. The rest?” She shrugs. “Deal with it as it comes.” 

The flirting earlier today and during dinner bolstered her confidence, but now it deflates under the penetrating stare that has laid waste to politicians, generals, and corpos alike, and she looks away.

“Alright, V,” she says at last. Trying not to betray the surprise she feels, V looks up to find her watching with a soft smile. “Let’s see where this ride goes.”

She feels light enough to explode and she leans forward, kissing her hard.

“And the bedroom?” she asks with a grin when she pulls away.

“That’s up to the FSS,” Rosalind answers with a smirk. Frowning, V tries to decipher the answer while Rosalind's eyes light up as she receives a call, and the smirk grows wider as she listens. “Yes? Thank you.” The light disappears as the call cuts off. “They just gave the green light.”

The frown deepens as she finally gets it. “Wait, you swept my apartment?”

“Of course. I warned you about the Secret Service. Did you think they’d let me wander off to an apartment in Heywood without inspecting it, as well as ensuring a private entrance?”

V scoffs. “You had them sweeping it before I asked you to spend the night.” Rosalind’s eyes crinkle and she purses her lips in a vain attempt at holding back the ever-growing smirk, but it only exaggerates it further. “Planning on spending the night all along.”

Rosalind shrugs, the smirk replaced by an elegant smile, but her eyes remain warm and crinkled. “What can I say? I’m a politician; I like to keep my options open.”

In which the Loki variant from the episode that lives in my head dies in battle with He Who Remains (Kang? Is it Kang? Are they one and the same? I haven’t watched Quantumania so I’m unclear if this is supposed to be the same character? I’m assuming so?)

Anyways, this is just self-indulgent art cuz I’ll never be able to write the story I have in mind but I can attempt to do some scenes from it.

More ramblings under the cut

Originally I was thinking Sigyn would also wear Loki’s colors to show they’re a united front, but I like the idea of her having her own color palette and then each of them having some small details as a nod to the other, at least when it comes to their battle clothes. I gave Sigyn here blue and gold with some green here and there for Loki, and Loki got a bit of Sigyn’s blue.

If they had been given a chance to grow old together their colors would probably blend more as sometimes happens with old couples (ha), but alas they never got that chance. Sigyn also gets pointy elf ears cuz who knows maybe she’s a descendant of the Dark Elves somewhere along the line. Who’s ta say?

Back to the story/episode idea:

It’s been about a week since TVA Loki and Mobius have shown up in Sigyn’s timeline. They’re still searching for this timeline’s HWR and haven’t had any luck so they decide they need to draw him out. Not sure how yet, it’s a WIP, but at any rate one evening there’s a party at the palace. Not sure why, maybe someone’s birthday, or they’re just having a good old fashioned “it’s winter, let’s feast” party or something idk.

Everyone’s having a good time but Sigyn has been a bit melancholic since Loki returned dredging up old memories. She leaves the party discreetly and goes to this one long hallway where there’s a massive long memorial relief depicting Loki’s life, culminating in the battle where her Loki was killed.

She’s alone, or thinks she is, as she runs her fingers over the carving of her Loki. She smiles as tears form, she’s thinking about their time together when she senses someone there with her. She begins to speak:

“We were just kids when I met him. You…him…” She turns as our Loki comes out of the shadows to stand beside her. “Millennia ago now, but I remember it like yesterday…”

So she walks Loki down the hallway telling him their story. How they fell in love, how Thor had decided he didn’t want the throne because he fell in love with a mortal woman and how her Loki didn’t want it either, he didn’t feel worthy of it, but he was. And he was good at being king, he was loved by his people and they all mourned with her the day he died

Scene ends with her holding Loki’s face in her hands and just smiling and saying thank you cuz she got to see him again. Loki’s full of all the emotions and before Sigyn wanders off into the night he hugs her and holds her for a while. She also takes the opportunity to “borrow” Loki’s TemPad (unbeknownst to him. She’s a trickster too, after all, learned from the best). She’s curious about this whole time jumping, fate of the multiverse stuff

At the end of this so-called episode, after they’ve caught this timeline’s HWR and returned to the TVA with him so they can read his temporal aura and hopefully prevent the meltdown of the loom, Sigyn has a talk with her sons, telling them it’s their time to rule. When she’s alone, she pulls out the TemPad, activating it: it’s time for her to have adventures of her own

Valentine Gene Development E-Mails LEAKED {NOT CLICKBAIT!!!}

So last night on discord I was able to share the Valentine gene WIPs I've been receiving through e-mail over the past months and I think it's worth sharing on here too! Be warned this is gonna be image heavy and long so under the cut it goes.

(note: the title is a joke 🥺everyone be niceys to me)

To start, I've already posted some of my very early design concepts on here, and it includes some stuff I sent to the team after the Kickstarter ended (November 2022). However, it looks like I never posted this little "ref sheet" that I also sent to the team! Of course it becomes something vastly different by the end, especially since in the next year the gene style was going to be revamped so I was operating under very different rules, but some certain details I wanted managed to be preserved regardless!

Fast forward to July 2023, I receive the first round of rough mockups! Because of the revamped art style, the artists did some experimentation and exploration of how they could interpret the concept and let me pick a direction to go in. I went with #3 because I thought it nailed down the idea of what I wanted while adding the detail of the new style really well. The only change I requested was to port the tail of #2 onto #3 because I really liked it! I am a tail tip enjoyer.

Time passes, and I get more emails in September 2023. The artists wanted to give the head area of the 3 design another shot because the original was a bit wonky. I received four examples (that for the purpose of this post I have cropped and compiled into a single image since the head area was all that was altered so its easier to compare them all this way.)

Being completely honest none of these were really speaking to me, at least not completely as they were being presented. Not being able to find the right words to say what I wanted exactly, I decided to make an edit of one of the D variants! The main changes I made were removing the contouring of the face, changing the scalp design to invoke a sort of spade (which is something I've wanted since day one!) and bringing back the freckles.

Finally, on October 8th 2023, I received the final render of Valentine! We unfortunately lost the freckles because they felt noisy (and this has caused issues with other gene concepts behind the scenes as well, so this wasn't just a me problem 😔 RIP freckle enjoyers), but other than that, WOW!!! Valentine came out like a dream. They really kicked it out of the water and I'm so happy to know other people think so too!

all options will include a simple/abstract background, and will have at MOST basic or minimal shading. complex/painted shading or backgrounds will add 5 USD to a headshot or 10 USD to a half/fullbody. scenes are an exception, and include the shading/background in the base price.

// Hi, hello. I run this blog as a side blog, so I'll like and follow from my main @fire-water-grass-core . I also run @koffing-time, you probably know me from there, honestly. If you need to adress me (the player/mun), I'm okay with any pronouns, and if you need a name you can call me Kama, Nox or Cheese. (And please exuse me if i sound harsh sometimes, or ask stupid questions)

First: this is obviously a Pokemon irl rp blog. As I and the people I'll mostly interact with will pretend that Pokémon are real, this is a blanket #unreality warning. I'll usually tag with at least one of the following three tags: #pokemon irl, #pkmn irl or #pokeblogging. I will NOT tag everything with #unreality.

Second: this blog is a place for both my fake region "Marawhetu" as well as an outlet for headcanons that don't really fit on Koffing-Time. This Fake Region is still WIP and it's made for a TTRPG, so don't expect actual fakemons because i will probably not make many (if any) of those. Instead, i'll keep to hybrids (see Musa's intro), regional variants or convergent evolutions. Posts about the region specifically will be tagged with #marawhetu lore.

Third: i won't go too much into detail on my tags and interactions and stuff here. I will basically use the same format as on @koffing-time, read the pinned post there and you're good to go :)

Hello and yes, yes, we know the drill El WooWoo but ALSO happy Spotify Wrapped. Glee is my top artist. 8 songs of my top 10 are from the Heartstopper soundtrack. This makes sense. Anyway, thank you @martsonmars and @facewithoutheart​ for the tags. And a happy Spotify Wrapped to you.

I am having a blast with my COC fic There’s nothing ironic about show choir, especially since I just established that yes, there is a rivalry between choirs, but no, no one takes it as seriously as Simon and Baz and I am just obsessed with them not realising it since they’re too caught up in being obsessed with each other.

“What are you doing?”

I look up from my notebook.

Simon’s standing in the doorway.

“I live here, remember?” I deadpan.

“Yes, but you’re usually not… here.”

It’s true. We’ve been living here for over seven years, but we both avoid this place like the plague. It’s very hard to miss that we share the room, though. My wall is filled with violet banners, flags, crests and pennants with the Vitis logo. Simon’s wall is filled with the scarlet Rutaceae variants.

(Agatha hates it and wonders why we also have to take the rivalry outside of choir.) (Does she not see that there is no ‘outside of choir’?)

Ha, ha, ha, scarlet and violet where did I get that from?

It’s also Advent time TOMORROW 🤯🤯🤯. Time caught up with me cause I have nothing prepared yet apart from the two snippets that I’ve shared before. But I will be fine. I am prioritising my Klaine Secret Santa fic over the Advent one anyway, but I do want to start tomorrow. (I still need a goddamn title!)

I also have some... sentimental musings. I shall put them under the cut with the tags. It’s not a snippet, just some thots.

Basically I was going through my archive on this blog to find the other WIP Wednesday Hospital posts since I wanted to link them in last week’s post (please clap) and I saw that I first started doing these SSS/WW tags in October 2021, when Marta first tagged me. I remember being so nervous about it, and now it has become a nice habit that I look out for on a two-weekly basis.

And I just... I was just overwhelmed by it in a way? I did so much in 2021/2022 that I am proud of. There were also fics I didn’t like as much, but where the two-weekly support was so great. And that’s just what I like about fandom, be it Glee or CO. Joining spaces like the Lima Bean or the CO Discord or the Second Breakfast club was great. Having platforms like those above and the Advent and COC and what not come up with great challenges is wonderful. I’m glad that both my current main fandoms at the moment (get rekt Check, Please!) (actually no, I do want to write more Zimbits) are so active, especially Glee since that show ended 7 slutty, slutty years ago.

This is also why I am so eager to jump in on every challenge, because I want to show my appreciation for the people who take the time to organise Klaine fic challenges, even though it has led to what we now call my girlboss situation and I did tell myself yesterday that I am probably not going to do the Second Wave of the Klaine 3-2-1 Reverse Bang because it is getting too much otherwise.

And maybe I will not be able to keep up. It’s a miracle I haven’t skipped a single post ever since that first Sunday tag (I count the “nothing to show ¯\_(ツ)_/¯” ones as a post) and maybe I will fall into a dip but even then people come and go with these challenges and it is nice to know there is always a potentional audience. I know from my experience that I have also been super stoked when someone posts a new SSS/WW after a break.

But yeah those are just some of my thoughts. TL;DR: I love fandom. omg, is it?? mine too!! well, the thing is, this fic is already posted!! so you can find the first few chapters here but as you can guess, is a Wolfstar fic based on the movie about time where Remus is a Tim Lake variant, partially the reason I start writing the fic lmao, and because I love it so much so this fic is kind of my homage to it. I mean, it's not a carbon copy but I tried to keep the essence of the movie while making it my own. I haven't been that active with the fic as of late but here's a little snippet of the next chapter that (hopefully) be up sometime around this week.

“Whose room was this?” Remus asks, looking at the big “A” in the door.

“None of your business tweedle dee,” Moody grunts, throwing something at Remus that he barely catches, “Here’s a spare key to the front door, I don’t give a fuck when you get out or get in. Just no loud sex.”

Remus blushes against his will. “Oh, no, I don’t— I’ve never—”

“Oh great, two losers under one roof, how nice,” Moody cuts him off and goes away, leaving a flustered Remus spluttering alone in the tangerine room.

Please tell me about the jestrid apocalypse :)))

Jestrid apocalypse is set in an alternate timeline where Cognouza got free of the astral plane and caused an apocalypse in Exandria. Jester is flung back into the material plane and finds herself returning to a very changed Nicodranas, where her mother is holed up not just with others from the Chateau but also a very familiar wizard...

Anyway, I have around 7,200 words of this and I really want to finish it! I got to do a lot of fun worldbuilding around what Exandria would be like after such an event, and Astrid and Jester just have such a [chef's kiss] dynamic, it's so great.

Here's a snip!

“Shh,” her mother whispers. “It’s not safe. Follow me.” She leads Jester to the darkest corner of the cellar and glances her over. “My darling. How many do you have?”

Jester’s heart sinks like a stone. “How many what?” she asks, aiming for bright and landing completely off the mark.

Her mother rolls back her long, lace-covered sleeve to reveal a red eye on her forearm, the pigment just slightly off from her normal complexion. “Do you have less than five?”

Jester stares at the eye, her stomach filled with lead. “Yes,” she says in a hollow voice. “I have four.”

“Come on, then,” says her mother, and leads her to an empty wall. She pulls her past the wall into a space that should not be there, and it takes Jester a moment to realize it is an extra-dimensional portal, similar to when Caleb used to cast the Tower. Someone has cast their own variant of the Magnificent Mansion here in this basement, and they are using it as their base.

It’s very smart. Jester doesn’t let herself think about Caleb.

They emerge into a pristine foyer, the floors made of wood that echoes under Jester’s heels. There is no sign of personality in this space; it is nothing except a room.

“I’m sorry, my darling,” says her mother. “We will have to confirm your number of eyes before I can show you more.”

Jester is familiar with this routine by now; she begins to unlace her bodice, pulling her skirts free and dropping her petticoats right there in the foyer. It is only her mother, after all; her mama has seen it all before. She unlaces her boots to remove the tights that cover her legs and reveal the first of the red eyes, broad and lurid on her thigh. The second is on her hip, cresting the curve of the bone. The third sits upon the back of her neck, as though it is staring behind her. The fourth is on her palm; she removes her gloves to reveal it.

Her mother waits until she is completely disrobed before looking her over with a clinical eye, having her lift up her arms so she can check under them, walking in a circle around her. “Just four,” her mother murmurs. “We are all fortunate, today.”

“Very fortunate,” says an accented voice. To Jester’s astonishment, Astrid Beck steps out from behind a hidden panel in the wall, her eyes narrowed in distrust. She looks similar to when Jester saw her last, when she allowed them to escape Yussa’s tower. Her hair is a bit longer, as though she hasn’t had time to bother to cut it.

Jester is hardly one to be bothered by nudity, but she wouldn’t be herself if she didn’t say something. “Astrid!” she gasps. “Did you want to see me naked?” Beside her, her mother snorts a soft laugh and hands her back her skirts.

Astrid doesn’t seem to know how to react to this question; she opens her mouth but says nothing. The tips of her ears are red – light-skinned humans blush so easily. Jester grins at her in a way that doesn’t quite reach her eyes as she shimmies back into her skirts and laces her bodice up. Astrid seems to finally find her voice. “I did not—we are not here for this,” she says. Jester has never seen her flustered before.
