what's going on between praskovya and pantalone is a little bit less brazen than that, but it is still very much a 'caged songbird' situation gnfjkbjnkfg. their relationship is less . . . public. sure, people know he's their patron, and that they're kamera-snapped together at harbinger functions, that praskovya was plucked from poverty and obscurity (singing in backwater taverns) in some kind of great 'cinderella' story, but that's good press for pantalone. there's an 'are they, are they not' kind of aspect to them that the common snezhnayan loves - and as for the elite, well, they've never truly accepted pantalone anyway, so what does it matter? it's not like they can say anything to a harbinger.

and pantalone really does have them under his thumb. his grand discovered talent, bolstered by his money and his influence. he very much likes to remind praskovya that! they'd be nothing without him. he found them an engagement in the city, he paid their rent, he bought them nice clothes and jewelry, he ensured newspapers and gossips were talking about them - he even found nice safe jobs in the fatui for their siblings, paid for the medical work for their parents.

sure, their brothers 'safe' jobs in the fatui were not all that safe and even the greatest of medical treatments can't truly save a life, but . . . he tried his best! and praskovya owes him.

so is it any wonder that they take off at the first opportunity they get?
