Luisa, Marchesa Casati Stampa di Soncino was an Italian heiress, muse, and patroness of the arts in early 20th-century Europe.
Born into a cocoon of privilege in 1881, Luisa was the second daughter of a rich Austian cotton merchant living in Milan, who would later be given the title of count by King Umberto I. A plain and introverted child, she quietly absorbed the delights of Milan’s museums, galleries, and libraries, which instilled in her an appreciation of the avant-garde art that was gradually becoming popular at the turn of the century. It was in these early years that Luisa became fascinated by history’s notorious eccentrics, including the ’Swan King’ Ludwig of Bavaria, who’s outlandish behaviour, construction of extravagant castles, and patronage of the arts would be a significant influence on the Marchesa's later years.
With an abundance of wealth behind her, the Marchesa began to tailor her lifestyle into a plethora of flamboyant dress and unconventional behaviour. Her reputation spread throughout Europe, with stories of lavish and fantastical soirees, of servants painted in gold leaf, and of the Marchesa’s penchant for wearing live snakes as jewellery. She began to collect elaborate mansions, such as the red marble Palais Rose near Paris, which included a summer house gallery housing the hundreds of portraits she had sat for. Elsewhere she kept a large menagerie of animals, including monkeys, snakes, and two cheetahs with whom she would stroll through the streets at night. In Venice, she would often take her ocelots and borzois on walks outside her palazzo wearing nothing but a fur coat, pearls, and a face full of makeup. Guests reported collections of eerie mannequins that sat around her dining table as if to accompany the guests, and the Marchesa added fuel to these rumours by hinting they contained ashes of her past lovers.
Tumblr media
Luisa's raison d’etre became ‘immortality through art’ and she began to seek out progressive artists, commissioning them to take her portrait by paint or lens and sometimes funding their living costs. This exchange differed somewhat from traditional, contemptuous relationship between the artist and the bourgeoisie; she maintained friendships with many she worked with and patronised the most innovative of artists. Her lifestyle was so intricately sewn with aesthetic excess and unconventionality that it appealed greatly to bohemian artistic sensibilities. Poiret dressed her; Augustus John painted her; the Italian futurists idolized her. In John Richardson’s biography of Picasso, he produces an anecdote about one of Casati’s infamous dinner parties.
Although no artist by traditional means, the Marchesa’s appearance was her canvas and she cultivated an enchanting personal style which captivated the aesthetes and bon vivants she consorted with. With her long, lean, pearl white body draped in outlandish finery, chaotic mess of fiery red hair, slash of scarlet lipstick, and striking kohl rimmed eyes, the Marchesa had the glamorous allure of a vampire, hungrily sucking up beauty, excess, and other visual delights.
She dressed in the high fashions of the day, but had many outlandish outfits specially tailored from her own ideas. One such example, which was worn to a ball in 1922, was decorated with dozens of tiny light bulbs, powered by a generator beneath her skirt, and reportedly gave the Marchesa tiny electric shocks throughout the night.
In portraits, she is most often shown with a tangle of hair dyed bright orange, intense eyes, and chiseled cheekbones. There is nothing muted about her approach to appearance. Casati stretched beauty’s limits even by today’s standards. She was six feet tall and accentuated her height with extravagant headpieces. Accounts say she took doses of belladonna, a poisonous plant, to dilate her pupils and make them darker. She didn’t stop there: She topped her unnaturally obscure eyes with rows and rows of fake eyelashes—sometimes fashioning them out of strips of fabric—and powdered her skin porcelain. She painted her face in stark black and white, like a photograph of the period.

Adresin’s toeing another breakdown, especially given current party tensions, so I imagine there are tears in her near future. Or, more of them, rather. Losing her temple, being fucked with by multiple gods, and losing a couple of people she was supposed to heal will do that. (It’s also been A Week, so this was cathartic.) . . . Full work up on my Patreon, as usual!

All my life I have turned to books, fiction and non-, for entertainment, solace, comfort, and wisdom. Authors became friends who have traveled with, humored, taught, sheltered, and saved me--in every way--and today is the 6yr anniversary of my favorite one's passing. I miss you, Umberto Eco. You're my One.

"Now I realize that not infrequently books speak of books: it is as if they spoke among themselves. In the light of this reflection, the library seemed all the more disturbing to me. It was then the place of a long, centuries-old murmuring, an imperceivable dialogue between one parchment and another, a living thing, a receptacle of powers not to be ruled by a human mind, a treasure of secrets emanated by many minds, surviving the death of those who had produced them or had been their conveyors."
A quote from: The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco
I just really, really loved this! The book itself is sooooooo good!

—    BASICS :      CIRO VERNACINI.
▸     IS    YOUR    MUSE    TALL    /    SHORT    /    AVERAGE ? :      standing at a slender six foot two, ciro is quite tall by sicilian standards.  as a matter of fact, he does not get his height from his father, umberto -- it is all his mother’s genetics, whose family is noted to be composed all of reasonably tall men.
▸   ARE    THEY    OKAY    WITH    THEIR    HEIGHT ? : for the most part, yes. he cuts an imposing figure when he wants to. however, when he does not want to, it adds a layer of difficulty.
▸  WHAT’S    THEIR    HAIR    LIKE ? :  when he was younger, he used to have a full head of wavy hair. as he’s been aging, his hair’s been thinning gradually and his hairline’s been receding, so he wears his hair cropped short. it’s also salt and peppered.
▸ DO    THEY    SPEND    A    LOT    OF    TIME    ON    THEIR    HAIR     /    GROOMING ? :  he does take daily care of his hair and makes sure it’s clean and free of dandruff+properly hydrated and what not. and regarding his facial hair, he trims and manicures it every single day so it’s in perfect shape.
▸  DOES   YOUR   MUSE   CARE   ABOUT   THEIR   APPEARANCE   /   WHAT    OTHERS    THINK ? :     ciro is fastidious regarding personal appearance and has always been, and you’d think with age he’s gotten sloppier but it’s actually quite the opposite. it must be kept in mind that ciro is a lawyer and a businessman, so he’s always made sure to dress appropiately. very rarely will you ever catch him dressing casually.
it’s not that ciro cares necessarily about others' opinion of him, but he cares about providing the correct image. similarly, he is critical about how others dress -- not publicly, not outwardly, but he is very perceptive about people’s presentation and how it might reveal things about their personalities. if you applied the same principle to ciro, you would come to the conclusion that he is orderly, detail-oriented, and conscientious.
—    PREFERENCES.
INDOORS    OR    OUTDOORS ? ▸ indoors. there’s little he gets out of the outdoors. RAIN    OR    SUNSHINE ? ▸  sunshine. rain makes everything messy.  FOREST    OR    BEACH ? ▸ beaches. he has good memories of vacationing in the south of spain with his family.  PRECIOUS    METALS     OR    GEMS ? ▸ metals. he’s a collector of coins, especially silver and gold coins.  FLOWERS   OR   PERFUMES ? ▸ as elements of interior decoration? flowers. for himself? some cologne. PERSONALITY    OR    APPEARANCE ? ▸  personality, but like mentioned above, appearance is an external indicator of one’s personality, at least in his opinion.  BEING    ALONE    OR    BEING    IN    A    CROWD ? ▸  he’s an introvert. he prefers to be alone, or in company of closest friends and his family.  ORDER   OR    ANARCHY ? ▸  though his occupation is characterized by its messiness, and ever-changing landscape, it is order he continously strives towards. PAINFUL    TRUTHS    OR     WHITE    LIES ? ▸  painful truths.  SCIENCE   OR    MAGIC ? ▸  science. bar a few exceptions, ciro is not superstitious.  PEACE    OR    CONFLICT ? ▸ peace. NIGHT    OR    DAY ? ▸  day. DUSK    OR    DAWN ? ▸  dawn. WARMTH    OR    COLD ? ▸  cold. MANY   ACQUAINTANCES    OR    A    FEW   CLOSE   FRIENDS ? ▸  a few close friends. READING    OR    PLAYING    A    GAME ?    reading.
—    QUESTIONNAIRE.
▸      WHAT    ARE    SOME    OF    YOUR    MUSE’S    BAD    HABITS ? :    he fails at expressing affection toward his loved ones -- would be his kids’ main complaint. he is hypercritical and considers this a net positive, though he has enough sensibility to keep his opinions to himself unless expressly asked and in that case, he does not mince words. he always acts as though he knows far more than everyone, even if he does not, and it may make even his closest associates (those that aren’t aware of this quirk) mistrust him on occasion, or at least irritate them. he is also extremely secretive, even about the most banal and innocuous things.
▸   HAS    YOUR    MUSE    LOST    ANYONE    CLOSE    TO    THEM ?      HOW    HAS    IT    AFFECTED THEM ? :   being the age he is, his life has been characterized by his loss. he lost his wife to old age, his father to a hitman, his mother to health complications. he lost many friends to violence and some to age, including in some verses his closest friend/partner in crime/boss. it’s all had affected to different degrees, though he’s not one to show it. he keeps his grief private and quiet, and only expresses a reasonable amount of pain -- the minimum expected -- when around others. by this point he is used to it.
▸   WHAT    ARE    SOME    FOND    MEMORIES    YOUR    MUSE    HAS ? : getting into various misadventures with salvatore scozzari, his closest friend, when they were kids. family vacations in sicily and spain. the births of his two kids.
▸   IS    IT    EASY    FOR    YOUR    MUSE    TO    KILL ? :    extremely. he derives no pleasure from it, but no regret either.
▸   WHAT’S    IT    LIKE    WHEN    YOUR    MUSE    BREAKS    DOWN ? :   it makes everyone nervous, makes them shut up and pain attention, because it’s such an uncommon happening. very subtle, too, it does not involve outbursts, but the atmosphere in the room changes drastically. his voice gets very soft. he wears a mildly gloom expression. he looks to the floor a lot, tries to compose himself by muttering quiet prayers.  ▸  IS    YOUR    MUSE    CAPABLE    OF  TRUSTING  SOMEONE WITH  THEIR LIFE ? : yes. it doesn’t come frequent, but once he trusts someone like that. there’s little he won’t do for them.
▸ WHAT’S  YOUR  MUSE  LIKE  WHEN  THEY’RE  IN LOVE ? :   ciro is wholly inadequate when it comes to love and romance, even in regards to his wife, who he loved not necessarily in a lover’s passionate sense but indeed in a companionship sense. i’ve yet to figure out how love affects his behavior.

Quarantine tag
Thank you for tagging me, @hiddenlookingglass :)
Are you staying home from work/school?
Yes. I’m a unversity student and everything here is closed now except for things like grocery and drug stores. Also, I lost my job due to the coronavirus, that really sucked. Thankfully, with the help of a very good friend I was able to find a new job! (can I just say that I have the most amazing friends? :D)
If you are staying home, who is with you?
It’s just me and my guinea pigs (who take advantage of the fact that I’m now at home all the time by begging for treats pretty much constantly. It’s super cute but I also have to be a strict guinea pig mom sometimes haha).
Are you a homebody?
I’m an introvert so social distancing is not really a big deal for me. Plus, I can talk with my friends over the phone so I’m not really feeling like I’m missing out on anything.
An event that you were looking forward to that got cancelled?
I’m lucky that I didn’t have anything big planned. My family’s traditional Easter brunch has to be pushed back now but that’s about it.
What movies have you watched recently?
I don’t watch movies very often but the last ones, I think, were Uncut Gems and Phoenix (2014). Phoenix (a German movie set shortly after WWII) I can really recommend. Uncut Gems was also good but it gave me seizures.
Also, I watched the Netflix show Unorthodox last week, which I can also highly recommend!
What music are you listening to?
I mostly listen to soundtracks during study breaks.
What are you reading?
I have a horrible habit of reading too many books at the same time and quarantine certainly didn’t help with that. I‘m reading some non-fiction books for uni and for my extension curriculum I’m also taking a class this semester on National socialism in contemporary literature and I have a reading list for that also. Books I am just reading for fun are Nothing New on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque, The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco and The Plague by Albert Camus, among others. And I’m already eyeing some new books, it’s a disaster.
What are you doing for self care?
I excercise and do yoga. And I don’t have a balcony or a garden but I try to sit by the open window every day to get at least some vitamin D. And I have a delicious apricot raspberry tarte in the oven right now ;)
i’m tagging @moriethmyth @elpisofhope @captainkaltar and @ellakay69. Only if you want to of course!

The Power of the Shower
You know those days when you maybe haven’t showered or washed your hair in a while? Your legs are beginning their descent down to prickle city and you can’t hide from anyone any longer that you don't have combination skin, in fact its oily, oiler the fry vats at your local McDonalds.
When you finally make it into the shower and the warm water welcomes you back as your hair begins to drip, you smile at the familiar feeling of being a clean human once again.
But I haven’t mentioned my favourite part. The emergence from the shower in a fresh towel. This has to be done right. You see, the fantasy can all come crashing down without proper preparation. Towels must be placed in the bathroom to prevent the horror of a naked scamper across the living room in the hope that you don't have company. I walk proudly to my room with my freshly washed coconut scented hair and shaven legs that I purposely rub together when I walk so I feel the satisfaction of silky smoothness. I am clean. I am pure. This is the version of myself I would like to remember. This is how I want to feel always. No makeup, no clothes restricting me, my hair hanging damp and free, my freckles and blemishes for all to see.
Often in the shower I come up with my best plans, the witty conversations I will have with dashing young men and the wedding toast I will make should my sister ever let me inside the doors of her wedding. I work on my harmonies, my melodies and the noises I can make with my tongue, mimicking the video I saw online once of a Russian popstar dressed head to toe in glitter.
The shower is a haven of sorts, where I reminisce about the time I bought a black fedora with a feather in the side or when I went gluten free in year 2 before it was cool. The shower is an old friend who I know I can trust with all of my sacred thoughts and secrets.
I am a true believer in the powers of the shower. It is there that many have found themselves in a moment of clarity, truth and happiness. Italian author and philosopher Umberto Eco once said, ‘I would work in the shower if I had plastic paper’. Sexiest man alive Chris Pratt, once said ‘My favourite way to blow off steam is to sing obnoxiously loud in the shower’ and I wholeheartedly concur with this statement. I would be lying if I said that I have never tried to sing the entirety of Bohemian Rhapsody, whilst simultaneously deciding if I want to add to the statistic of the 99.9% of people who pee in the shower and the .1% , of liars.
Singing in the shower is the best kind of singing. There’s no sound check, no audience to please and lucky for you, no one will critique your choice of key. The more pitchy the better as far as I’m concerned and show tunes are a personal favourite. I once was in a snazzy little gift shop when I came across the perfect present for a chronic shower singer like myself. It was a waterproof microphone. I begged and pleaded with my mother whilst she firmly her stood her ground and looking back, I thank her for it.
You see, the beauty of the shower is that there is no need for microphones. The time is for the introvert hidden or not so hidden in all of us. A time to feel like your true, bare bones self once again. A shower is a hug from mum, marked by the steam in the mirror and the slippery floor. So for the rest of my life on those sad days, joyful days and days where I dare not look at the state of hair, you’ll know where I’ll be, singing off key and feeling super clean.

Y’all. We got back to #umbertoandtheintroverts after a short hiatus last night and ho man. We temporarily freed a god, talked to said god, then got sent back in time to deal with the shitstorm that is actually so much worse than we thought. And we still need to get the thing we came for in the first place. So...how was your Tuesday night?
