🤩 What led to your interest in the fandom?

I learned about the game from my brother, so I started to get into it. I think what rlly led to my interest in it was seeing how the female characters are misinterpreted. That's the main reason I wrote my fic, to give abigails pov bc ppl can't seem to empathize w her for some reason??

One thing I've learned is to not wait for inspiration to write. Do it even if it sucks. Eventually, you'll find that inspiration so long as you keep going. If I waited for inspo to magically come to me, I'd probably write once a month😭

6. What's the worst thing about the fandom?

Hmmmmmm. Honestly, I don't have much of an answer for this. Having not really been in the fandom for very long proper (even though I guess now I'm 'in' it more since I've done the Doctober prompt challenge and I have this blog) makes this a tough one to answer and I can't even consider this a fandom thing since it's more a personal preference thing but I guess for lack of any real answer, I'd say leaning into the very heavy romantic/sexual shipping between Doc & Marty.

It's not for me, it's not how I see or want to view their relationship at all because age difference notwithstanding, they are very much the father/son, best friends dynamic to me and I cannot see them as anything else than that.

17. Are there any ships you can't stand? Why?

Oh haha, I answered this accidentally with my answer above, oops!

But yeah, I'm just very much not into leaning into the heavy ship between them. Not in that way. I personally can't see Doc falling for Marty like that, especially not when he's constantly toeing the line of am I acting too much like a father than a friend right now?

21. Which song do you feel describes your character the most and why?

Aw fuck, music based questions my absolute worst nightmare haha.

I'd need two years to really think on this to find the best song so instead I'll just do a song that describes Doc and one of the first that comes to mind is Strange Machines by The Gathering.

The song showcases that same wonder about someone (could be a scientist why not?) who wants to fly in strange machines/a time machine and experience history firsthand.

I wanna do centuries in a lifetime and see it with my eyes. Very Doc to me tbh, especially because he says he wants to see humanity with his machine: where they've been, where they're going, the pitfalls and the promise. The good and the bad. Centuries in a lifetime.

I'm a little frighteningly confident in my own writing—not that I think it's perfect, because I can see all my weaknesses and actively try to work on them, but that I don't really get embarrassed by things I write? I write them because I want to see them exist, and I'm not particularly embarrassed by any of my desires.

I did laugh at myself the other day about how I am apparently incapable of keeping kink out of anything I write, so maybe that.

Rose Quartz: Were any characters cut from the wip?

There were actually! I was going to have the frat house be co-ed so I had a couple of girls (Shira and Reina) who got cut. Then I realized they didn't have personalities and they were there just for the sake of it and I didn't need that many people, so away they went!

Sapphire: The most upbeat dialog or overall scene in your wip

There's a really fun winter solstice party scene! It's the first time Aurelia really bonds with the boys, she throws them a party to bring a little fun into the house. Everyone gets drunk, Aurelia makes everyone love her, it's a great time!

Pyrite: Could the antagonist and protagonist ever be friends?

Potentially. Amethyst is the Enchantress who curses the Beast, but if Aurelia didn't know that they could potentially have been friends. Amethyst is very charismatic, she makes people around her feel good (as long as she likes you). But I don't think she and Aurelia would stay friends, Aurelia would see through her eventually. And in the events of the story, Aurelia would never, after what she hears about her from the members of the house

3. I'd have to go with my 5+1! It's a tough choice because...well, to be honest, the 5+1 is one of those works that I can't look back on without cringing inwardly at my little writing quirks, you know?

Despite its imperfections, I'm proud of myself for putting aside the fear I'd developed of fiction writing, and just going wild. The power of the brainrot took over!

2. ADMIRATION. Is there anyone they idolize or look towards as a model? (Or, is there someone that might admire this character one way or another?)

I think Kevin sort of looks up to Cecil and Charles both, probably because he just doesn't understand why they're both so... good. I feel like during his time with Carlos he was hearing Cecil over the phone (I feel like Cecil talks so loud over the phone you can hear him from a mile away, like my grandma lol) and then just. imitating him. Whether that was a trauma response to the Strex shit slowly leaving his system or him trying to make Carlos like him better, he's really not sure. I also think Donovan looks up to him, and Kevin's batshit terrified of that. Not only does he desperately not want Donovan to have to go down the same path he did, he's terrified of turning out like his own father.

4. FORGIVENESS. Are there things that they could never excuse regardless of justification? Can they easily forgive, or are there long-held grudges?

I feel like a lot of media (idk if there's a lot i cant think of any examples i just feel like that's a Thing That Happens Often) focuses on the first step to being a "better person" is forgiveness, and I think he follows that far too much. I think the only reason Kevin wouldn't forgive someone would be if they hurt someone he cared about. Otherwise, I feel like he'd even forgive Strex before Charles knocked some sense into him. He totally forgives the Smiling God FAR too much, like he could be torn apart and put back together by It, and he'd forgive It. I think he's trying so hard to be a good person that it's destroying him.

10. PUBLIC OPINION. What do other characters think of this one? ...And, if applicable, how are they treated by both the community and media they're sourced from?

I think it's sooooo interesting that Kevin is pretty much fucking despised by his entire town. Like. According to triptych he pretty much let Strex tear him apart before he let them hurt anyone, and then he was made into the one doing the hurting. I wonder how long it took his town to change their opinion of him. How long it took before their opinion of him became so permanent that even once he has the Strex out of his system, they still hate him. I think soooooooo fucking hard ab Charles being like. the only one to look past his appearance and see that he's trying. Charles not showing hatred and instead showing genuine interest and that being so fucking foreign to Kevin at that point.

also slightly less angsty but like. I def think Kevin thinks a lot of people are his friends. Like his personal friend list is: Charles, Donovan, Grandma Josephine, Lauren, Carlos, Cecil, his coworkers, Intern Vanessa, all of the town

Charles's response to that is: We're married, that's your son, that's your mom, she sprayed acid on you, you have not talked in decades, he has your number blocked and has said several times that he hates you, they have told me that they only work with you because you're the prophet, Kevin are you serious they send you death threats every single day.

6: how they deal with grief

Sylvia-- She becomes very quiet and withdrawn. She doesn’t have the motivation to do much other than spiral in her grieving thoughts :( As she begins to ease out of it, I can see her being very mindful about checking up on anyone else in her circle who has been affected by the same grief.

Jon-- Almost in the same vein as Sylvia, except while he's withdrawn, he'll fixate hard on something to work on rather than address the root of his feelings right away. His backstory (which will be explored more in the Shot rewrite) has opened him up to structured coping mechanisms :’)

Cliff-- MOSTLY HE JUST 

:(( BUT ALSO target practice is one way he tries to take his mind off things. If he’s pushed too much to talk about his feelings, he’ll definitely snap and want to get a lot of space from whoever is questioning him.

18: how they sleep

Both Jon and Cliff are light sleepers because of their hunting experience. If there's danger, they're ready to react. They're also used to sleeping odd hours, so grogginess and alertness sort of comes and goes depending on whether they're between hunts or in the middle of one. Sylv is still adjusting to their insanity lmao

As far as sleeping arrangements, Sylv snuggles up with Jon, either on his chest or pillow or hands, while Cliff contemplates his life choices 🥰 HOWEVER, Cliff’s shoulder and pockets are definitely prime napping spots for Sylvia when she needs to recuperate!

22: what they're like on two hours of sleep

Jon and Cliff can probably keep it together pretty well, since it's likely something that happens regularly. I can see Jon handling it much better though, able to still be personable while Cliff's resting face makes him look ready to gut the next person within reach.

Sylv's no stranger to late night frolics and getting a couple hours of sleep, but lack of sleep after a stressful and traumatic hunt doesn't leave her in the most sunshiny mood :') She’ll be a whiny baby and get pissy about little things, like the sun is to bright or the shirt pocket is too scratchy 😠

Fandom Gripe #23: I know that fandom is in some deep denial about its treatment of female characters that are canonically involved with fan favorite m/m ships, but do y’all realize that when you disappear female characters from the narrative wholesale to push the idea that your canonically straight fav was “secretly gay all along!” you’re making several bad implications? That 1) bi men don’t exist, 2) bi men do exist, but those who have genuinely loved a woman before cannot genuinely love a man after that (therefore bi men don’t exist in practice), 3) women cannot inspire genuine love and devotion in men, therefore any relationship with a woman is “lesser” than the one they later have a man (see previous parenthesis), or 4) to acknowledge the existence of a lovable woman who isn’t a terrible person, where if a relationship previously existed, it did not end because of “incompatibility,” is enough to destabilize the present relationship between two queer men?

Because why is the tgcf fandom allergic to acknowledging that He Xuan had a whole ass fiancée that he loved? Why does no one ever seem to remember that the kidnappings and murders of He Xuan’s sister and fiancée were the final straws that sent him on his rampage, and he still keeps a shrine to them in the present-day of the story? Why is her entire existence and significance to He Xuan as a man, character, and to his character arc disappeared in favor of pushing Shi Qingxuan—the brother of the man responsible for his fiancée’s death—into that same role, as if to say that her impact on He Xuan is significant... just not when it's from her? Why does He Xuan’s life in fandom essentially begin not just after her death but because of it?

do you have a masterpost of "ty lee comes from crypto-air nomad" posts? I'm fascinated by this idea and want to read everything I can but I can't find where it started 😭

i feel like this is a question better posed to @kyoshi-lesbians, who, at least in my book, is the leading expert in ty lee studies (among other things). that said, i can definitely synthesize the argument (and why i find it cogent and persuasive), even if i don't actually know from where the theory originated (but i'm sure that if you look up "ty lee air nomad you'll immediately be directed to an old reddit page or fan forum from years ago; it's a "theory" that goes way back).

firstly, ty lee's appearance is distinctly "air nomadic" in a way no one else's is. save for aang, of course. she and aang do bear an uncanny resemblance. everyone else in the fire nation has yellowish brown eyes, for example, while ty lee, like aang, has charcoal greyish brown eyes. and they also have similar (round and cute) facial features, similar expressions, similar vibes. similar dispositions...

ty lee does not "have the personality" of a ruthless fire nation soldier, despite acting as the princess's right hand who takes out more opponents than pretty much everyone else put together. ty lee acts like an airbender, flirty and flighty. her relentless optimism and goodwill and cheer is decidedly a mask, but it is a mask she adopts adeptly. even if she is performing, she nonetheless performs the "aang" function of her respective group.

ty lee presents herself as more spiritually attuned than other people in the fire nation, who outright disrespect the spirits and spirituality. her constant talk of auras is likely a calculated move on her part, as nearly everything is, to make her seem silly and trivial, because she thrives best when she goes underestimated. but her talk of auras also has to come from somewhere, and seeing as literally no one else mentions auras once throughout the entire show, ty lee's sources are clearly scarce.

ty lee also fights like an airbender. despite generally taking the offensive, ty lee nonetheless exhibits a graceful, acrobatic quality when in combat. she never kills anyone either, merely incapacitates them momentarily. and when she is faced with stronger than typical opponents, she usually relies on her skills as an acrobat by taking the aerial advantage. note her ability to jump incredibly high, such as in "the chase," or her ability to run along a moving cable wire in "the boiling rock." ty lee's skills go beyond merely being a good acrobat. she's incredible. and perhaps even exhibiting some latent airbending skills she inherited from her ancestors.

ty lee's air nomad ancestry coheres really well with her arc as a character. imagining that her family of genocide survivors hid in the heart of the fire nation and assimilated into the imperialist culture that sought to exterminate them makes her own role that much more impactful. there's already a beautiful parallelism to the fact that ty lee is an acrobat and performer who contorts herself to suit the desires of others and performs obsequious loyalty for her own survival, but an extra layer of depth is added if she's also assimilating into the royal court by reducing herself and hiding her true feelings and motivations, just as her family did.

i see ty lee's ancestors as having assimilated into the imperial core out of fear, but over the generations, genuinely being subsumed into fire nation culture, with the desire to social climb a natural extension of their patriotism. but there are also still facets of ty lee's ancestry, whether genetic or otherwise, that have remained in traces. the generational trauma, for example, definitely reflects why her parents had so many children. and the fact that she's constantly torn between two worlds, as a genocide survivor who also directly serves the imperialists who murdered her ancestors, represents her internal struggle as someone who desires freedom of expression and the choice to assert her individuality, but is also forced through circumstance into lying and deflecting and manipulating (which, to be honest, is also the air nomad way) for the sake of survival.

surviving is ty lee's number one priority, in a way it just isn't for mai. mai and ty lee both come from social climbing families (although i've always assumed that mai's family is far wealthier than ty lee's) but mai is also depressed and frustrated and bored out of her mind. and even though she was raised in a family that forced her to don a mask and reduce herself and perform a passive model of femininity, she also has no problem stating aloud how she's feeling and what her limits are (with the exception of when azula gives her a veiled command as a test, and mai has no choice but to obey).

mai has the privilege of knowing that the stakes don't really matter, which she all but states when she claims that she grew up in luxury and opulence, and always had everything handed to her. which isn't to say that she led a perfect, easy life. she wouldn't be as depressed and repressed as she is if there weren't factors actively harming her, but she still chooses to join azula by choice, even if it's really only the illusion of choice between two awful options, whereas ty lee has to be coerced through violence.

mai kind of has a "fuck it we ball" attitude and doesn't really seem to care about her own safety (if anything, she's more concerned with comfort), whereas ty lee would do anything to ensure her survival. and that kind of mentality illustrates how she differs from most of the fire nation elites, who were inculcated into imperial privilege and never really considered what prioritizing survival even entails (zuko learns that lesson the hard way). ty really exhibits the mentality of the genocide victim/colonized subject through her prioritization of survival in the face of what to mai is a problem, but to ty lee is an existential threat.

whether or not ty lee even recognizes that her desperate desire to live comes from a place of generational grief and trauma is another story, but i do think there is something to be said for the fact that descendants of genocide survivors can feel that grief as it has been passed down to them. i think ty lee feels it, and i think that it motivates her to do whatever it takes to live, because above all, she is a survivor. and even if she has to assimilate and manipulate and cut away every part of herself that's real and authentic and true, she will do it (until she doesn't). and that's also, incidentally, what makes her such a great foil to aang.
