Fandom Gripe #23: I know that fandom is in some deep denial about its treatment of female characters that are canonically involved with fan favorite m/m ships, but do y’all realize that when you disappear female characters from the narrative wholesale to push the idea that your canonically straight fav was “secretly gay all along!” you’re making several bad implications? That 1) bi men don’t exist, 2) bi men do exist, but those who have genuinely loved a woman before cannot genuinely love a man after that (therefore bi men don’t exist in practice), 3) women cannot inspire genuine love and devotion in men, therefore any relationship with a woman is “lesser” than the one they later have a man (see previous parenthesis), or 4) to acknowledge the existence of a lovable woman who isn’t a terrible person, where if a relationship previously existed, it did not end because of “incompatibility,” is enough to destabilize the present relationship between two queer men?

Because why is the tgcf fandom allergic to acknowledging that He Xuan had a whole ass fiancée that he loved? Why does no one ever seem to remember that the kidnappings and murders of He Xuan’s sister and fiancée were the final straws that sent him on his rampage, and he still keeps a shrine to them in the present-day of the story? Why is her entire existence and significance to He Xuan as a man, character, and to his character arc disappeared in favor of pushing Shi Qingxuan—the brother of the man responsible for his fiancée’s death—into that same role, as if to say that her impact on He Xuan is significant... just not when it's from her? Why does He Xuan’s life in fandom essentially begin not just after her death but because of it?

pairing: jj maybank x reader (they are baristas! how cute!)

series summary: when jj is hired at the cafe y/n works at, memories of a night they spent together arise and so do their feelings for each other.

author's note: this was originally going to go in a completely different direction and be an angsty oneshot but then i stumbled into writing this meet-cute and i had to make this a series. i promise i'll have the strength to publish some angst one day, but alas, that day is not today. i hope you all enjoy and lmk if you want to be tagged for part 2!

"Hey, Y/N, heads up, we have a new hire coming in today. Mind showing him the ropes?" 

Great, you thought. Just another thing to do that I’m not getting paid for. "Sure, of course," you said to your manager, in your best customer service voice. 

The thing about working at the local cafe was you often got new hires for the summer, who left as soon as school started or their vacation ended. You didn't mind training new employees, but you felt like you were wasting your time knowing most of them would quit in a few months. 

"Don't sound too excited," your manager joked. You had been working there (legally) ever since you turned sixteen, and before that under the table. He knew your family came from the cut and you could use the extra money, plus you were always a hard worker. 

"Sorry, but it's not my fault you seem to purposely hire people with no work ethic!" 

"Listen Y/N, some people just need a temporary job. No one stays at a place like this for long."

"Except me." You wouldn't admit this out loud to anyone because you knew they would judge you, but you didn't mind working at the cafe. Your dream was to open your own place one day, but even in your head it sounded silly to you. There was never much room to dream on this side of the island. 

"Yeah, that's why you've been employee of the month for the past two years. Now get back to work, the coffee isn't going to brew itself!"

You were finishing up a latte for a customer when you heard the bell ring at the register. "I'll be with you in just a second!" 

"Take your time," the voice responded. You smiled to yourself, making a mental note to take some extra time perfecting whatever drink this customer would order. You always appreciated it when customers let you work at your own pace. 

Wiping your hands on your apron you walked over, only to be greeted by a familiar face. You faltered for a second, not sure if it was actually him. The last time you saw him was when you got wasted at a frat party. You weren't sure that he even recognized you, and not just because you were in your work clothes. (It was really dark in the back of your Jeep). 

You decided against asking him if you've met before. "Hey- what can I get started for you today?"

"I'm actually the new hire. The manager said to speak to Y/N?" He glanced at your name tag. "Which I assume is you?" 

"Are you sure you picked the right profession? The FBI could really use someone like you," you smiled at him.

"Oh, I checked with them first but unfortunately they didn't have any openings."

"It's okay, being a barista is basically the same thing. Half of the customers expect you to be able to read their minds and the other half complain about problems that are out of my jurisdiction."  

He laughed, "Damn, I thought you guys just made coffee." 

"Oh, trust me, this job is much more than that. Come on, let's get you a name tag.... Speaking of, what is your name?"

"If you're really as good as you say you are, shouldn't you be able to guess, detective?" 

You chuckled, you had some idea of what his name was but you didn't want to run the risk of being wrong and embarrassing yourself. Jay? JB? It was something along those lines. 

“Actually, it's agent. Detectives work for the police, not the FBI."

The boy put his hands up, "Oh, my bad. Didn't know I was speaking to an expert on law enforcement here." 

"It's alright, it's your first day. You'll get the hang of things soon...?"

"JJ. That's my name." You were relieved that he didn't make you try and guess his name because that would've put you in a very awkward situation. 

"Oh, cool. What's it short for?" you asked.

"Nice try, agent. It's going to take some military-level torture to get that information out of me." 

You laughed, it was rare that you hit it off with people this quickly. You were known to be a little overbearing and too sarcastic at times, but JJ didn't seem to think so. You wondered if he knew you two had met before, but didn't want to hurt your own feelings by asking. 

Instead, you led him to the back where the extra name tags were. You handed him one and a marker and watched as he carefully wrote his name down. You couldn't help but admire his features, his strong arms and the way his blue eyes darkened when focused. 

"Quit staring at me!" You blushed, not knowing that he could feel your eyes on him. 

Still, you regained your composure enough to make a snarky comment. "Sorry, am I making you nervous?" 

"Yes, I am feeling a lot of pressure right now and I haven't even started behind the bar yet." 

"Come on, it's just a name tag. It doesn't have to be perfect." You looked over his shoulder to see him drawing... something. As cute as he was, he was not the best artist. "What are you drawing?- Sorry what are you attempting to draw?" 

"A coffee cup! You really can't tell?" 

"Oh...." you said in the same tone as you would be speaking to a child who had just handed you their art project. "Sure, I can see it. If I hit my head against the wall and squint really hard." 

"Stop! It cannot be that bad." 

"I just hope that you're better at making coffee than art."

You spent the rest of the day training JJ in between serving customers. Luckily, it was a weekday so you weren't super busy and as it turns out, JJ was a quick learner and he was in fact better at making latte art than whatever he was doing on his name tag. 

"Wow! That looks like an actual heart this time!" you complimented his work. 

"Thanks, made it just for you," he winked, looking up at you. Despite only (really) knowing each other for a few hours, JJ was already comfortable flirting with you. You hated that you felt butterflies rising in your stomach. 

That night at the frat party, you were wasted because you found out your ex had cheated on you. Ever since that day, you vowed never to let your guard down again. Well, ever since that night, because technically, you had let your guard down with JJ. You couldn't remember much, apparently not even his name, but there was definitely some making out and second base stuff, all of which you chalked up to being drunk and not the result of actual feelings.

However, for the next few weeks, he was all you could think about. Your friends kept trying to get you to see him again, but you had no desire to leave your house, let alone get back in the dating scene. All you wanted to do was admire him from afar, where it was safe. 

Besides, the more time you spent with JJ now, the less convinced you felt that he remembered any of it himself, so bringing it up would simply be self-sabotage. 

Even so, meeting him again felt like fate in a way. Like love at first second sight. 

"Hellooooo? Earth to Y/N?" JJ was waving his hands in front of your face. Shit. You didn't realize you had spaced out. You didn't want him to see you flustered so you tried to pull yourself together as quickly as possible. 

"Sorry, it's been a long day. Let's wrap up, shall we?" 

He stayed later to help you close the store that night. As you turned the lights off and shut the door behind you, you couldn't help but feel like something had changed. Like the universe had given you a second chance for a reason. Maybe, just maybe, it was time to let your guard down again.

I love this from him, not only because it feels like almost no one else wants to admit that That Episode of That Show was cheesy and condescending, but also because when I first saw this screencap it was in a tweet where the user added something like, "Trying to imagine the person who recommended this to Paul." I also tried to imagine them! I want to assume it's like a younger relative who doesn't know any better or something, but first of all it doesn't take intimate knowledge of Paul Schrader to imagine that he probably would not enjoy The Last of Us; secondly, he JUST TOLD YOU he doesn't want to watch anything zombie-related, clean out your ears!; and third, please for the love of god don't badger people with your petty, meaningless subgenre distinctions. You can't even trust that every single nerd wishes to debate you on whether there is any point at all in separating out all the slightly-different shambling, infected mobs of ex-humans which are all used to tell the exact same kind of story--please don't do this insufferable thing to normal people. Especially not to someone who just told you they don't like the main form of shambling, infected ex-human mob, you're not going to trick that person into approving of your favorite show on the technicality that the mob is shambling for a new and novel reason. This all reminds me of:

1. How people just cannot allow anyone to dislike Their Thing no matter what. One time I posted this quote from Werner Herzog saying he prefers the artifice of pro wrestling to the broad, ridiculous imitation of emotion that you get from contemporary theater, and somebody reblogged it with a string of angry tags about how many innovations and revolutions have occurred in the world of live drama up to the modern age, concluding with "KNOW YOUR HISTORY". Which is so funny and pretentious, like "know your history" is how you scold people who don't know where their privilege comes from, it's not for bullying people who just don't enjoy something, by suggesting that they have to inspect every single available version of the thing before they're legally allowed to say "I don't like that, it's not fun for me."

2. I once worked for this comic book business where we had to come up with genres, subgenres, and tags for all the titles. Pretty much all of us employees were ex-"gifted and talented" students, and this one particularly pretentious dude argued that we should categorize a graphic novel of the New Testament as a zombie book because of Jesus's resurrection. He thought he was being soooooo clever as if he were the first person in the universe to think of this dumb joke, but the conversation was also a big waste of time because fancy thought experiments are simply not useful for merchandising. Like, if a customer walked into a bookstore, told you they wanted zombie comics, and you gave them the fucking King James Bible, they definitely would not appreciate your marvelous ability to Think Outside the Box, and also you'd be dangerously close to becoming a living *youth pastor voice* meme. You're not in third grade anymore and you're not getting extra credit for creativity, shut the fuck up and stop saying Jesus is a zombie. No one is impressed.

PS In that same project at that same job there was a whole controversy about how to label "adult content" because we didn't have any hardcore stuff, but we did have sort of R-rated books that served a similar purpose, and nobody knew what to call them because it was felt that "adult" or "mature" or whatever could be misleading to actual porn consumers. The Jesus-zombie guy suggested that we name this genre things like "bawdy", "ribald", and "tantalizing", as if that would actually be more helpful. I might change her last name BUT I have finally started to figure her out. As far as 'this character has probably existed' she's older than a few others like Sumaya or a couple unnamed ones, but she's actually got plotline so she counts more than them. Also she actually has a design (tho it's subject to change).

Oldest OC: Julian Dae

Of fucking course. He's changed a lot obvi but I first made him in like... 2018. He's old as fuck. Functionally he's more like 2 or 3 years old tho because that's when I solidified his actual story to (roughly) what it is now.

He cares about people and he's easy to be around BUT he makes mistakes and sometimes in the effort of not hurting anybody he ends up doing more damage. But mostly he's sweet. My perfect fucked up guy.

Most standoffish/aloof OC: Brooke Ulriche

She's soooooo disaffected she doesn't see the point of getting close to people anymore so she just doesn't. She moves through people's lives with little thought to them which means she doesnt really care about any of them?? Just in a personable manner?? But also she DOES care but only in the sense of how she is useful to them. She's really normal guys.

Dumbest OC: .... ...Julian Dae

I hesitate to call him dumb but compared to the others... yeah. He's too impulsive for his own good and he doesn't really think about consequences. He's never had a plan in his life. Everybody else is either really methodical (Liliana, Brooke, Reiji) or emotionally intelligent and good at problem solving (Milo, Diana) and Julian just... isn't. He's fuckin stupid but also look out? I guess?

Smartest OC: Liliana Hart!

And that's why they go so well together! Lmao she's not perfect (FAR fucking from it) but she actually IS really good with a plan and is patient and brutal and you know that post that's like "ruthless just means seeing the clear line between here and there"? that's Liliana. She's detail-oriented and careful and while going off-book isn't exactly her strong suit she CAN make it work because she has good instincts. She's good at considering all the options and picking the best one.

I just tagged a bunch of people last time, so I’ll leave this one open, too, but I’ll mention @bloodlessheirbyjacques @muddshadow @magefaery just in case they want to. BEFORE

As he dwelled on his actions, the door slid open, followed by slow footsteps. Jason straightened himself out and turned around.

“Is everything—”

He gasped as Will staggered into the room. Blood trickled down his neck and shoulders, slightly dying the tips of his hair. Jason rushed over and held him by the shoulders.

“Will?”

“I’m sorry.” Will’s voice was painfully weak. “I didn’t know where else to—”

He stumbled again, and Jason caught him before he could collapse. Without a moment’s hesitation, he paged for the doctors and followed them to the infirmary. Time seemed to freeze as he waited outside the Emergency Ward. All he could think about was how broken Will looked. Someone had hurt him again, and badly, if he felt that Ves Corp was the safest place to go to.

ALWAYS

It was a nice headstone, all smooth and polished, though Will was still upset about the name. He and Henry had fought so hard to make it “Jason Prescott,” but the engravers insisted on using his legal name, regardless of the fact that he was disowned by his parents. For people who wanted nothing to do with him, they refused to let anyone else have the final say in his funeral arrangements. They wouldn’t even believe he was a godfather, at first, until Mary straightened them out. Their compromise was to let Will choose the epitaph, the one part that his parents didn’t care about. Always and forever… It seemed like a joke now, but he valued those words deeply.

COARSE

He kissed him again, careful of where he placed his hands now. Jason noticed how coarse they were, no doubt from all the training and lifting required for soldiers. It was different, yes, but also exciting. Feeling a little brave, he kissed Rio’s neck, and to his amusement, the soldier gasped in surprise. Jason’s bravery was short-lived, though, as a huge smirk spread across Rio’s face.

“Alright, sly,” he said. “Two can play that game.”

QUESTION

Thomas stood behind Riley, watching everyone in eerie silence. Their head was buried in their spiky jacket like a turtle. Riley smiled and pulled them closer.

“It’s okay, hon. You remember Will, right? He’s Jason’s kid.”

They looked nervous, something Will could definitely understand. He had hurt a bunch of guards last time. As gently as he could, he extended his hand. 

“Hello, Thomas. I like your jacket.”

Thomas relaxed and shook his hand. “Thanks. You can just call me Tom, if you’d like.”

Will smiled. “Good to know. Anything else?”

They thought about his question for a bit. “Don’t call me a guy or girl, ‘cause I’m neither… no matter what some of the doctors say.”

Great, Will thought, more assholes to set straight. He held his hand to his chest.

“Hey, I understand. Thanks for trusting me, Tom.”

Thomas smiled. “Thank you. I was so afraid that Riley was gonna break your nose.”

Riley laughed. “That was one time, and that fucker deserved it for misgendering both of us on purpose.”

“Oh, I’m not complaining, I’d love to see you break some more noses.”

Riley chuckled and kissed their forehead. “Good to hear, hon.”

RESPONSE

“The doctors will have you fixed up in no time,” he said, “but I won’t have you start work until you’ve had time to rest.”

Jason stared at him blankly. “Thank you for your kindness. I don’t know why you would go through so much trouble for me.”

Vesely frowned and set the clipboard down. “I have experienced a loss similar to yours. My daughter, Paisley, my sweet little angel. She inherited her powers from me and her mother. Our town was no better than Preston when it came to people like us. The townsfolk were scared, as most Humans tend to be. They believed she would become a monster.”

Vesely turned away, blinking back some tears.

“I tried to save her, but I was too late. They burned my daughter like a witch.”

Jason felt sick. Freaks like him were all too familiar with the harassment that came with their powers, but this… Nothing on Earth could justify killing a child for the way they were born. Jason’s heart pounded at the thought of it. He prayed, deep down, that Will was just an unlucky victim, rather than a target.

“I’m so sorry,” he said, “That’s horrific.”

Vesely smiled slightly. “Thank you, Jason, but I’ve had my time to mourn. I used my pain to help this company thrive, and now our children have a place to call home. It can be your home, too. Take your feelings, put them into your work, and you can make the world that your friend would have wanted to see.”

Jason cringed. He would have wanted to be with his family, he thought, he would have wanted to live. He glanced up at Vesely, who eyed him like a teacher awaiting the response of his student.

“… I‘ll do my best, sir. Thank you for everything.”

“Of course. Try to get some rest, Jason. We’ll see you in the morning.”

Vesely turned and left the room, the door sliding behind him with a muffled thud. There was no other sound but the hum of a large fan. It was soft, slow, and empty. Tears welled up in Jason’s eyes as he clutched Will’s old necklace, the last remaining piece of his godson.

don't get me wrong, i'm absolutely gonna vote, and i 100% recommend that others do too

but more and more its becoming clear (in my opinion at least) that no matter the outcome tru/mp is not going to transfer power, either upon his loss or at the end of his second term. whether its suppressing the vote/etc so that it lands in his favor or just straight up refusing to concede/transfer power in january
