new campers never know he's a Hecate kid and always assume he's from Aphrodite or Tyche cabin (fancy man Jay)

that is until they get sick and all of a sudden he's at their cabin door with potions and his mom persona

oh yeah btw he's got connections in all the cabins (mostly with Jake's help) so he's officially become the camp mom, taking care of any problem the younger kids have if he can use magick for it

also sometimes partners with some of his siblings and the Hypnos cabin to calm campers when they're wrought with nightmares

i'm obsessed with Hecate!Jay so i may have gotten a bit carried away hehe

he's friends with every cabin leader and then a few more in each cabin

for some reason i feel like he took the longest of the boys to get sorted

until one day, in the middle of a drought, someone was like "i wish i could talk to my dad again :(" and Jake wanted for them to get that so bad that he accidentally opened an Iris message

he's also really good at spying and trickery, so even if he somehow managed to alert people to his presence, he can illusion the situation and make it seem otherwise

bc of this, he was often requested to go on quests when he was younger, but Jake would decline for him because he thought he was too young

oh yeah, btw, he's super close with Jake and Heeseung bc when he was younger, he knew Jake from the time he spent unclaimed in the Hermes cabin, and Hee was convinced Jake was an Apollo kid so he started hanging out with them, and now the three are really close

HeeJake are practically his parents tbh

He likes making potions with Jay, whenever he's bored he just goes to watch and even help him sometimes

everyone expects him to be a great lock pick, but he actually sucks at it

he tries so hard but he can't

basically Hermes!Riki is everyone's sly baby

So I saw the rumor of a collab between JK and Justin Bieber and / or Jimin and Justin Bieber. Any thoughts? I like JB better than Charlie Puth in any case. If either of them did do a collab with a western artist, who would be on your wishlist?

PS: I don't know where this rumor originated from but I saw a twt account spreading it acting as if they had insider info and when I checked their "predictions", I saw they had said there was a JHope tour soon which was ironic given today's announcement.

I've said this before and I will say it again for the last time. I don't care about Western collabs. BTS or the members can do whatever they want and work with whomever they want, this is of little to no interest to me, especially Justin Bieber. It's a topic that has been exhausted already and quite frankly, it became old.

As a side note, accounts with so called insider info are just bullshitting. They take the rumors from other accounts, which take it from IG, from forums and whatever platform there is out there. Sometimes they get it right because a lot of the rumors are just an expected outcome of stuff that has already been officially announced, so they throw in some insider-info tweet that sounds vague in the hope that at least 1 in 100 rumors will turn out to be true. They know what they are doing, all have the same strategy, the same style of writing (just enough to have people asking for more), the typical cloud chaser. I'm not falling for any of that, it's too boring and transparent at this point.

what’s a carats shaming ppl into streaming for music shows got to do with butter being on bb for 10 weeks? the two things have absolutely no bearing

it was just an example off the top of my head related to k-pop in how those numbers can be so easily manipulated for charts. i was a lot deeper in being an army then so it's always the first example i think of, the organization around that and the way someone had bought thousands of copies of it to hit the charts is absolutely insane and the kind of thing i'm talking about. if you want others, last nct 127 (p sure it was 127, someone correct me if im wrong lmao) comeback people were telling others that they should be skipping classes to stream and if you weren't you weren't really supporting the boys. last year stays from twt came and pretended to be new fans to try and guilt us into voting/streaming for an award show. but it all works the same way bc streaming numbers (videos specifically, and on korean music platforms) are counted in music shows, in addition to mass buying and whatnot, which goes for multiple charts (gaon, melon, billboard, etc).

if you want a non-kpop example, the time justin bieber literally posted a guide on getting yummy a #1, in detail on what to do as posted below. arianators are always ALWAYS posting about streaming numbers and are always the first to bring it up to prove who's the "better" pop girl, even though those numbers aren't indicative of anything except being able to get a lot of people to do something in a certain way. it's all about number ones and not about actual impact or hard work or if the songs are actually good. the only slight difference imo is that while we dont have music show wins or anything, the real scam for these numbers is if it can get you a number one and maybe go a little viral on tiktok.

SO! ive always thought that Mainstream Sellout is like, unintentionally authentic. like, he tries to have this deep feel to his music and fails to execute it with a great tonne of emotion, but the fact that he did fail is what makes it more relatable imo. cuz i mean. i Mean as an artist myself i have Felt the Cringe of trying to make Deep Content but then failing cuz my skills arent good enough. and the fact that Kells is out here unintentionally creating that story through the process of the creation, release and feedback of the project makes me go "y know what i like this. art is allowed to exist either way i like it"

like... it reminds me of a 13 yo try hard who wants to do some revolutionary shit but theyre. theyre still 13. and i think its kind of endearing actually especially considering that Kells is pushing 30 cuz like, its as if signalling, "just bcs youre an adult you dont Need to act prim and proper and mature all the time damn." you can say whatever abt Kells but i dont think you can call him a liar or some shit yanno? he is literally living the life in as a severely (over imo) hated artist

TLDR: Mainstream Sellout screams "i am cringe but i am free" and it does so unintentionally by failing to be a great album, except the failure is part of the success. hes kinda not lying when he says hes a mainstream sellout, and i appreciate his honesty

also this is me impersonally speaking lol. personally i Lowkey have made an emotional attachment to this album and i rock to Emo Girl, Born with Horns and also get emotional during Twin Flame. i think that awoogie boing boing this is a good album cuz *car horns*

trust me, i also think the sheer amount of criticism he gets is excessive. i think his past inarguably ugly controversies combined w/ his 2010-justin-bieber/mid-2000s-nickelback/late-90s-fred-durst tier punchability to several key groups of music fanatics as well as ppl who just enjoy laughing and jeering from the sidelines have resulted in this monstrous distortion of who he is as an artist and a celebrity that - to me - feels pretty hyperbolic when your opinion of him isn't solely informed by gross old soundbites, provocative headlines, and his nu pop punk era PR mishaps. so many artists are not good people, but kells is a not-good person who also currently makes music that many are predisposed to dislike on principle, and markets that music using a persona that arouses Seething Irritation in territorial youths and older folks alike across several different online music communities. i say that not to deflect criticism from him but to explain why i think the Machine Gun Kelly Discourse cocktail is so crazy potent compared to those of some of his also morally dubious contemporaries.

w/ that said, the juvenile POV that people are lambasting in "mainstream sellout" is not new to kells, and i think any adult who is or was a fan of his should be able to recognize that. he has romanticized his own struggles with addiction and mental illness for a long time, and he hopelessly yearns for the posthumous deification that only artists who die young and tortured are awarded (kurt, chester, peep, juice). because, in his mind, maybe that is the only way he'd be as respected as he supposedly deserves to be. maybe then, everyone else would see what he sees when the clouds of discontentment part and there is nothing but pride in his own work and what it represents. i've always found it sad and misguided, but as a Chronically Mentally Unwell person myself i can unfortunately relate to some degree. i have no idea what my creative voice would sound like without the pain that created it in the first place, and i lowkey worry i would lose it entirely if i eventually managed to get better. i suspect kells, who has spoken at length in the past abt feeling like he needs to be miserable to create, hasn't evolved past that mindset either.

i've spoken before about why i believe i connected w/ Tickets so profoundly in 2020 and why i had been a fan of his work before that album dropped, so from this point i'll go straight into why "mainstream sellout" does very little for me in comparison. one key issue is that, taken as a whole, it doesn’t feel authentic to me in the way that Tickets did. there was no way for kells to know before he released TTMD that it would blow up like it did. he was making it because he wanted to. he was processing very fresh and very real feelings about major life events (his dad, for example) during lonely early-pandemic studio sessions. this was not an album that people were asking him for at the time. with mainstream sellout, on the other hand, there was a precedent. he needed it to be as successful as (if not more successful than) TTMD, so it’s like he was trying to reverse-engineer the appeal of that project, with limited success imo.

i don’t think certain factors that contributed to the success of TTMD can be replicated, because i believe they had to do with the state of the world at the time - but even if we set that aside, i just don’t think kells sounds “free” on mainstream sellout. he sounds like he’s trying to haphazardly balance everyone else’s expectations on top of his own desire to be unexpected, within a genre that has rigid restrictions for All Ye Who Enter Here. most of the songs ring hollow to me as a result - nothing for me to really chew on underneath the ornamental bluster on top with the exception of a couple of tracks. there are definitely some catchy hooks in here, and definitely a sprinkling of songs that made me go “fuck it, I’ll add this to my pop playlist,” but there is little to remind me of the MGK that i felt connected to once upon a time. i got more of that from his Billboard video interview than from the actual album.

i’ve mentioned this in passing, but i also find the title to be a disingenuous (and unsuccessful) last-minute attempt to assert his self-awareness to the public. he is not a mainstream sellout, because he was not “selling out” by switching over from rap to this style of music. he had been a mainstream artist before TTMD. he already had a sizable and dedicated audience to sell his new image to, even without the percentage of his OG fans who seem to desperately want him to return to his roots. “ironic” album names that might have suited his predicament better: -POSER!!! (all caps + exclamation marks necessary) -fake punk -cancelled (yes, like tana mongeau’s podcast) -ex rapper -eminem made me switch genres and all i got was this stupid album

and i was a fan, so i know very well that he always had an interest in various subgenres of rock music. that doesn’t mean that the people questioning his punk cred are totally off the mark. if he doesn’t want people to do that, he needs to avoid sweeping statements about his impact on “guitar music” and he needs to avoid labelling himself. i mean, if you write a song as ill-judged as “sid & nancy” at the same time that you’re boldly asserting that you know your history, people are gonna have shit to say about it.

final thing i will say is that your personal feelings about the album are completely valid, regardless of mine! i know it can feel weird and bad to like something that so many ppl are publicly shitting on, but if you like it you fucking like it!! for the record, i also enjoy “born with horns” and i can see the emotional appeal of “twin flame” even if the latter did not hit me the same way that “play this when i’m gone” did the night that TTMD came out.

JK Day 2021

...and what a day it was. I know we’re a bit late with this when looking at KST but in our time zone it’s still September 1st so it counts, right? Besides I wanted to wait until the day was over for them so I could have everything the members would post for JK so I could put it in this post as memory for us to look back on in the future.

Furthermore, as extension for the celebrations, I want to finally sit down, write and post our post about JK and his bonds with the hyung line since it’s been so long since two anons asked us about that so what better time than the weekend after JK day, right?

Anyway, let’s get into it, shall we?

The day before JKs birthday he came onto Weverse and posted three different things, including a cute selca:

Everyone of course turned up their creativity to post something for JK and also wondered among themselves what he planned on using those lyric comments for, and if he would use them for anything at all.

Sometime later before the new RUN episode aired, Seokjin appeared on Weverse and, for whatever reason, commented birthday wishes for JK under the Weverse post about the upcoming RUN episode. Because of course he did.

More than an hour before midnight KST everyone got a notification from vlive that JK had gone live:

And truly, considering it was about to be his birthday, I love how it felt more like it was ours with the gift that kept on giving that this vlive turned out to be.

Remember those posts that JK made in the morning on Weverse? As many, including myself, had guessed, JK gathered some of the lyric comments he liked most, or thought would work best, and proceeded to turn them into an actual song right before our eyes. The instrumental was gorgeous with a acoustic guitar and ballad like melody and it was truly fascinating watching him figuring out how to sing the lines, record them, redo them whenever he felt he could do it better, add adlibs in some places, and slowly but surely a song was created with lyrics in both English and Korean.

This really was the content I’ve always craved and I’m so, so happy we got to watch JK do this instead of him just showing us the final thing. You could see him having fun, even when he got a little frustrated at times or he wasn’t quite sure how he wanted to continue or how he wanted the words to sound like, and that he really knows what he’s doing. So many claim that Bangtan have no idea about producing and recording songs, which truly is such a stupid argument to make considering Yoongi is literally Producer SUGA and we know that, if the members want to make mixtapes they have to do them themselves, which we know Namjoon, Yoongi and Hobi have done. So JK doing all of that in the vlive? Checkmate against those idiots. Especially since it also isn’t the first time we’ve seen members work on tracks, like the behind the scenes of rap line working on DDAENG or Hobi working on songs, or even JK with Stay, even if we didn’t know it’s Stay at the time.

Once the song was finished JK went on to show us several more instrumentals he could’ve worked with, each one with a different vibe, before switching to singing a song by Justin Bieber saying he really loves his songs a lot. And then it was nearing midnight so he unpacked the cake he got, white icing/fondant with purple lettering spelling out STILL WITH YOU JK, very cute.

Right as midnight hit someone started to bang on the door so JK got up to see who’d come and, surprise, it was a very excited Hobi wishing him a happy birthday including singing the birthday song for him upon JKs request while JK lit up his golden heart shaped candle.

Hobi again returned two minutes after he’d left (between when at 1:18h JK mentioned that, for the first time that night, he’d do one more song to finish off the vlive, ha) to give him an ice cream cake he’d prepared, but also to get his phone which he’d accidentally forgotten in the room JK was in.

Once Hobi really left and JK got a taste of his ice cream cake, as well as the white cake which turned out to be chocolate flavored, the vlive concert began and, at the time, none of us knew what we were in for since we all thought he’d really do one or two more songs and that would be it. And yet that very much is not what happened, at all, and I’m so grateful for it.

No wonder that, eventually, Seokjin decided to come onto Weverse to post wishes for JK a second time while also saying this (the picture is from their unit photoshoot for Winter Package):

The imagine of Seokjin just sitting in bed or whatever watching JKs vlive and hearing him say last song every like ten minutes and every time he just kept going...and going...and going while Seokjin is just waiting...and waiting...and waiting? Hilarious. But it’s also really cute how he’d wanted to wait until JK was done to not interrupt him or pull ARMYs attention away from the vlive. Truly I adore their bond, it’s adorable and chaotic and so wonderfully them.

Yoongi also posted his wishes for JK while the vlive was still going.

The one who waited until it was over was actually Namjoon who, with what he said in his tweet, actually revealed that he’d watched JKs vlive as well. In his vlive JK said that at the end of their concerts Namjoon used to always give his speech like a (school) principal, as in his long ending ment speeches, and that’s why Namjoon ‘signed’ his tweet with principal as well.

Truly I love how JK was just having fun singing their songs, taking requests from ARMY, rediscovering songs, like him wondering if they really have a song called Paradise (since the Korean title is different) and finally fulfilling ARMYs wish of hearing BTS sing it live, as well as being surprised and confused by requests for Heartbeat asking himself if them really have a song like that. But since ARMY kept asking for it, he finally looked it up and his reaction to realizing that, yes, it is a real song of theirs and also that that’s the song we were talking about which he’d completely forgotten about? Hilarious but also kind of heartbreaking for all the Heartbeat enthusiasts.

One thing that this vlive showed really well was just how amazing of a singer JK really is. It’s easy for people to dismiss his talent during concerts or performances, since they could always argue that him and the others get help due to the backing track etc., but here we had his raw voice singing along to their songs much the way any of us do. And he sounded stunning beginning to end. He’s such a talented singer and he’s worked so hard on his technique and voice and it’s really showing. Thinking back to what he said in his BE comeback Weverse interview about how he’d like to one day he brave enough to do a three hour concert on his own, I’d say this vlive shows that really shouldn’t be any kind of problem at all. If ARMY can listen to him essentially do karaoke for one and a half hours, then attending and enjoying a full on JK concert would be no issue whatsoever. It’d actually be amazing, I’m certain, and I’d totally be down to seeing that potentially become a reality one day in the future.

After two and a half hours, the vlive ultimately came to a close and JK said his goodbyes.

Hours later Hobi appeared on Weverse wondering what pictures of JK he could/should post for his traditional picture “spam” and everyone was immediately super excited. Hobi’s gallery holds some wonderful treasures so we all looked forward to what he would end up posting, though it would take a few hours until it would happen.

The funny thing is that he posted the first twt twice since the picture with Namjoon in it had Hobi’s iPhone in it which, as good Samsung representative, was a no, no, so he deleted the twt and posted it again with some stickers covering the phone. So cute. And his picture choices are wonderful. I particularly love that picture of JK in the white room dressed in black from back in 2019 when they performed Boy with Luv. And also their picture from a dinner the two of them went on together back in 2018.

In the meantime before Hobi posted his pictures, as requested in the picture that BH had posted for JKs birthday on the staff BTS account at midnight, one of the members posted his meal though it’s unclear which one of them it might’ve been. Looks super yummy though, wow.

And eventually the final member to come and wish JK a happy birthday was Jimin (and yes, I know Jimin’s twt came before Hobi’s but considering Hobi already wished him a happy birthday at midnight, that makes Jimin the last one):

Taehyung didn’t post anything but considering his track record of doing something for the members off social media for their birthday, like giving Namjoon a forehead kiss, sending birthday wish videos to Seokjin (including roping others into doing it as well), or wishing Jimin a happy birthday as part of the MOTS ON:E exhibition, I wasn’t all that surprised by this.

And with that JK day 2021 came to a close. It started with a surprise (as in both the song based on ARMY comments and also the concert afterward) and ended with one as well, as in the In The SOOP Season Two announcement.

I hope JK had a wonderful day, celebrated happily with his members, friends and family however much that’s possible in these times, as well as with their busy schedule, and that this new year will be a happy one for him full of success, personal but also career wise. I’m curious and excited to see what will happen.

i hate the standard that knets set that kpop idols should stay single their entire career like. we can’t have nice things.

i thought about this while laying in bed (...procrastinating), while getting food, and while eating - and i've come to the conclusion that this is a very loaded statement. kind of rambled about my thoughts here, oops

from what i see on carat twt right now, it seems like the inets are chill about it. i have no idea what the knet side is like; i'm just hearing secondhand that it's bad. maybe i suck at finding drama LOL but this kind of reaction isn't limited to knets. from one direction to justin bieber to even influencers now, there's an overarching pattern of fans reacting badly to dating news, especially as the parameters of fame and celebrity-dom get bigger. i'm sure celebrities before my time have had these issues, too, but alas, i am a wee child in my 20s who doesn't know much about pop culture. i'm a little hesitant to agree with the fact that knets won't let us have nice things because i've seen so many nasty things from all corners of the world back in my multifandom days. like,,,,,,i don't know! i'm sure there's just as many supportive knets as there are unsupportive and/or toxic inets.

kpop idols aren't the first nor last celebrities to have parasocial relationships with their fans, but it seems like the industry is definitely built on it. i think about my role in this situation a lot, actually, as i wonder whether or not i should keep writing on caratblr. to me, the svt and carat interactions are very best friend-like; they don't really push the flirty boyfriend image. idk where my thought process is going, but like, i wonder if i'm feeding into the toxicity at all by writing my imagines and reactions (esp on my other blog)?? i write because i like the ideas, and my readers read because they like the ideas - we recognize the line between reality and fiction. but whenever something like this happens, i can't help feeling guilty over perpetuating the idea that kpop idols owe us something? i dunno how to explain it.

regardless of how the current situation turns out, i hope everyone continues to support all the boys. they love carats so so much, and seokmin and chan are such hard workers. it breaks my heart to see that there's potential backlash over this. seventeen is always 13.
