A trope I hate but oddly love
Just a rant on a tv trope that doesn't really make sense
The "second" love trope, it's after the Main male character (mmc) has already found his true life and she usually dies and then another female main character comes and the start a relationship with feelings but it always ends because the only thing keeping them from just being happy is that the MMC has to be miserable without this first wife. He could never love another like 'her'. I hate it because I always end up falling for the second love, examples of this are Mira and Spartacus from the Spartacus tv show and Tommy and Lizzie from Peaky blinders. It's annoying because it's always potential and could be shown as a beautiful love story if the writers had wanted it to be but they always end tragically. I guess it's romantic if we're looking at the true love perspective. but at the same time you can love more than one person in your lifetime. Most people have had exes and if you loved them I doubt it was the exact same like copy and paste type of love. Everything is usually there, build up, chemistry etc etc, the only thing holding them back is that these mmcs can't love anybody like the first wife.
A fav quote from Spartacus that pretty much shows how these relationships always end up
Spartacus: I have given you what's left of it (his heart)
Mira: it is not enough

You know those ‘hero has a corruption arc and joins the bad guy’ tropes?
Now here me out: trope where it’s revealed that the hero had never actually been a hero. They were always evil, possibly even partners with the one believed to be their nemesis, and had just been hiding it as a tactic.
Also counts as reverse assassin-becoming-part-of-the-found-family-they-were-sent-to-kill,
where it’s instead you-thought-I-cared-but-me-and-my-‘rival’-are-actually-besties-and-you-mean-nothing-to-me

If I lost all of my possessions
What would you do if you lost all your possessions? Those of us who are of a certain age have probably been faced with this question more often than we realize. To my fellow Gen Xers out there, and even any baby boomers who might be reading this, did you ever notice than in most sitcoms of the 70s and 80s, virtually every TV family experienced a fire in their homes? There are even TV trove…

I'd like to give a shout-out to the villain's monologue, for without it so many more people would be dead.

One of my favorite tropes in film is when characters that speak a language only in universe characters can understand are suggested to have an absolutely foul mouth. Gets me every single time

i have such a love for characters who descend into madness or villainy out of deep, deep empathy. characters who fundamentally cannot cope with the cruel realities they find themselves in and blow up about it in spectacular fashion. fallen angel type characters with tears of outrage in their eyes. characters who break before they bend, and break so badly they splatter blood all over their noble ideals. every variation on it gets me so good

I finally know what it is that makes percy and grover’s dynamic so different. Its the same dynamic that we see in american middle school media: a male protagonist and his weird, nerdy, conventionally less attractive male friend and their whole friendship dynamic is a shift from “he’s so weird ew” to “hey, maybe i can live with being your friend”
But percy and grover are different because they love each other so much!! Their friendship dynamic developed from “i like him, even though he’s a bit weird” to “you’re one of my favourite people and i know you dont believe that but ill make you believe it” which is like a hundred steps ahead of the typical friendship we see in the media.

I truly believe one of the most important things you can teach a person in school is how to analyze literature and art and movies so you know how to look at a work of art and place it both in its time and ours. To empathize with the artists behind it as they were and not as we are now. To recognize the ways in which humanity has grown or the connective tissue between us and the past. But mostly so I never have to see someone call a movie or its dialogue “cliche” or “stereotypical” when the cliche to which they’re referring was either quite literally invented or at least popularized by the movie they just watched.
