This is the first of three episodes inspired by the incredible time we had at Fated Mates Live in Brooklyn. During the event (which was so so fun we love every single one of you who came!), we asked guests Nikki Payne, Kate Clayborn and Lauren Billings of Christina Lauren to choose an interstitial topic they would like us to tackle on the show. Lauren chose a great one: Exceptions to our rules, meaning…tropes we don’t care for that are done really really well.

Tropes I dislike

these are just tropes I dislike and if you're offended by it, sorry not sorry. Also, some of these tropes can be written in a different way. Let me know if you want me to make a part of those aspects

When the guy is in love with a boy but he finds out he is a she. C’mon author just say you’re homophobic.

Soulmates / destined to be together. Hear me out I know a lot of ppl who like this trope but I just feel like the characters aren’t given free will and need someone to ‘complete you’ when it should be someone who ‘complements you’

Yup that ‘I got into a car accident and I forgot who u are’ Oh do better!

Damsel in distress?? When the female character is portrayed as weak and LITERALLY needs the guy to save her every time?? Like she basically can’t stand up for herself for even the smallest things.

'I can fix him/her’ when A says this about (their partner) B but there isn’t anything inherently wrong with B, they just don’t fit into the norm. (just A not being accepted and labeling it as ‘helping B to be normal’)

as the request stated, that ‘i am trying really hard to keep hating you‘ phase, or what i like to call the reluctant friend stage. feel free to use :)

remember… they hated each other a couple chapters back. what changed? why did it change? who did it start to change in first?

kinda obsessed with the idea of quiet enemies-to-lovers, actually. i feel like so many enemies-to-lovers ships are so loud, there's so much banter and snark and backtalk, and there's nothing wrong with that; but i love enemies-to-lovers where the loathing is in dark glares and the tense silence enveloping the two, where "i despise you" is conveyed with one look. where, lurking in the quiet, there lies an understanding of hatred—and, eventually, an understanding of something else, entirely.

I don’t know why, but there is something so deeply special about the “you know I’m in love with you? Right?” trope to me. It’s the only miscommunication trope I genuinely enjoy. There is just something about the way a character just stares at their love interest in exasperation or confusion and points out the blatantly obvious thing between them. Whether they scream it out in frustration, or say it in a deadpan manner or even with a little laugh and tilt of the head. Just looking at someone, realizing what do I have to lose at this point? And just saying “Dude, you have to know I’m in love with you, right?” My heart does a little flutter every time.

One character giving the cold shoulder and the other smirking at them because they know they’re doing this for attention.

“I love it when you act all controlling like that knowing damn well I can leave you shaking under me.”

Character B telling Character A how badly they want to press their face into their pillow and make them scream as the other is trying to work.

Eye-fucking them all day, making Character A nervous and a blushing mess who can’t properly function.

“I haven’t even touched you yet, why are you falling apart so easily?”

Hungerily ripping apart their clothes and biting their neck and thighs as soon as they’re alone.

Purposely turning them on and edging them but never letting them get too stimulated. Watching them desperately trying to hold themselves together for the rest of the day.

Both characters trying to make each other moan and the first one to do it must carry out a favour.

Turning them from a haughty prick to a clingy mess who keeps grinding onto them for more.

Crying from too much pleasure and the other wiping their tears away. “Aww is baby crying? There there, that feels good doesn’t it?”
