if you reblog something and add a ton of tags to boost it, that doesn't do anything. your heart is in the right place, but tags on a reblog are for organization or commentary. they don't bump it up in the tag feed or count towards "trending."
it doesn't harm anyone to do this! it's just not something you need to spend time on.
i know I've said this before, and i wanted to recycle my old post(s) about it but can't find it.

ok i can't find any of the posts but hi if you're here from twitter here's a crash course of tumblr etiquette
reblog! reblog reblog reblog. if your post count is lower than your likes count you're doing it wrong. this is the website of having interests so reblog shit u like, we even have a tag system so you can organize things and find them again later! post limit is 250 posts daily, go nuts. edit - also, there is no algorithm here. we spread things ourselves or they don't get spread. Reblog!
change your icon from the default and have SOME kind of bio. there are bots around here. empty blogs get blocked by most people.
it is 400% ok to reblog old posts. yes even posts that are years old. we can turn off reblogs here, if someone didn't want you reblogging a post they wouldn't let you. you can reblog things multiple times in a row, even. if you want to put Cursed Pikachu Man (you'll likely get acquainted with him) on your follower's dashboards 12 times in a row nobody and nothing is stopping you.
post tags are for talking and rambling as much as they are organizing things, but keep in mind that tumblr only tracks the first 20 tags. so whether you are making an Original Post or Reblogging Something For Later, put your important tags first AND THEN ramble. the tags are also very long, 139 characters i believe. Per Tag. cough cough and creatives Really like it when you say stuff in your reblog tags cough cough
settings > dashboard > preferences. best stuff first? turn that shit off. your dashboard is now chronological and you can easily scroll to wherever you left off last. unless you follow like 500 people in which case lmao rip
Tumblr media
6. you can send people both direct messages AND asks - DMs work like they do on any website. Asks are like sending somebody a piece of fan mail they can respond to publicly, or privately if you don't send it anonymously. Do not use the anonymous feature to be mean.
7. you do not need to censor words here. say kill. it's ok.
8. there is a blacklist feature. you can blacklist both entire tags, and words from posts. settings > account, it's under "content you see". if you don't want to see something you can get rid of it forever instead of complaining. enjoy.
9. if you make things: tag fandom, characters, and ships if applicable. add any medium or blog organizational tags after that. add spoiler tags if relevant. this all goes in the Tags bar at the bottom of the post, NOT in the text content of the post itself. ez pattern to remember.
feel free to add on fellow tumblr elders we need to get the newbies acquainted

I'm new on tumblr and I've been following you for a while. Great blog btw! What does blorbofication mean? TIA
oh no, i was afraid i would have to explain this someday lol
(post being referred to)
Simply put "blorbo" is Tumblr slang for your favorite character, primarily one that lives in your head rent-free and probably shows up on your blog the most.
It started with a post (or two) poking fun at fandom bloggers, specifically Marvel fans iirc, for obsessively posting about random characters their followers aren't familiar with. A few other terms were coined that day like "glup shitto" and "scrunglo." This post explains a few of the terms you might see floating around tumblr; I must add to their definition of "glup shitto" that it's intentionally making fun of how unbelievably ridiculous some names in Star Wars are.
"Blorbofication" means a character has been turned into a silly fixation by a fan or fandom, so some of the original context of the character has likely been stripped away for the sake of personal enjoyment. It is probably derived from the slang term "yassification" which you can just look up cuz I'm not getting into that lol
Welcome to tumblr!! but there's a lot of reading material to understand just what the hell we're all saying lol. sry in advance

OK, here’s the deal.... IF YOU FOLLOW ME BUT HAVEN’T DONE ANYTHING TO YOUR PROFILE (i.e. default profile pic, default header, no bio [or something so generic it’s meaningless]) AND/OR HAVE ZERO VISIBLE REBLOGS YOU’RE GETTING BLOCKED.
Truly - if you can’t be arsed to do the minimum, then I’d prefer you get off my garbage pile until you do.
(If this seems harsh, sorry, but I don’t have time to play “Are the bots getting smarter or is this just a lurker?” Because FYI for newbies: most of the good parts of tumblr don’t like our numbers getting boosted by bots or shitlords, so if you’re a human reading this who wants to join our reindeer games, you know what to do....)

I love sharing the process of making my plush. For projects that are in process, should I post updates in real time and add to them in reblogs...or just wait until I'm done and blog the whole process at once?
What do you think, follow along or see it all at once retroactively?
My current new-pattern projects (maned wolf, life-size dhole, life-size chonky arctic fox):
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
To be clear, these won't be tutorials so won't be so detailed. I just like giving a peek behind the curtain, so to speak, and giving general tips.

Tumblr Newbies listen up:
First of all welcome, things are different here, and we won’t lie, it’s a mess but we also kinda love it.
1. Want to be popular or famous on here??  Move along, not gonna happen. Follower count aren’t shown to others here, nor is the following count. No one cares, and honestly it’s one of my favourite things about this site. Does a person have 10 or 10k followers?? Only they know. Following to unfollow later isn’t really a bit issue, there’s no reason to because no one knows how many followers you have.
2. Block, block and block. Blocking is seen as like a last resort or something big on other sites. Not here, block who you want when you want for whatever reason you want. It’s not a big thing.
3. Your dash is yours. Follow who you want and whatever you want. Unfollow whenever you want. Follow your likes and change however often you want.
4. Want to make a popular post?? Good luck my friend A popular post could be anything from useful information to someone going ‘I like salt’ to someone really random. Post what you wanna post when you wanna post without hope it’s gonna get noticed. Which leads me to my next point
5. It’s basically yelling into a void here Post whatever you want, it’s probably going to end up getting swallowed into the void with maybe the same 5 people here liking it. It’s basically just like yelling while in a crowd and 1 person might yell back, but that’s it.
6. Likes are cool, but it’s not what we’re really into. Likes are cool, but only you see what you like, unless you make it visible to others. Reblogs are basically sharing stuff to your profile and to someone else's dash so others see what you reblog. If you like something, reblog it. Like it is just basically saving it for you to look back at later. Comments are basically just a convo between you and the original poster. You can reblog with a reply, so the comment is public and others can reply to you. Notes are the overall amount of comments, likes, and reblogs. Aim for liking and then reblogging something
7. Tags are cool, but they are also for thoughts. so you can tag stuff with the basics #Photo #Art etc, but you can also #I really like this and once I saw something similar and it reminds me of that. Hashtags here can have spaces and can be quite long, but you can break it up with other hashtags for basic sentences
8. Find your people There is a fandom and blog for everything and I mean everything. You can always find a blog or someone who likes what you like. You just have to find them and search tags. I’ve only been involved in the book side (Booklr) and the study side (Studyblr) but there is always someone out there you can chat to
9. Just have fun We’re not really here for much else. There’s no pressure on tumblr, there’s no popular side, there’s no fight to be something you’re not. Just be yourself and enjoy what you can
10. This site is a mess Yeah, things stop working or they mess around, it’s part of the charm
Bonus:
A lot of the time there are inside jokes. I came across one this morning I had no idea what it meant. You can find tags or sometimes people explain. We want people in on the joke, if you know the joke and someone asks you, don’t be a snob about it. Let them in on it. It’s so much more fun and its amazing what people can do.

tumblr description tip
if you want to change your tumblr description from this i.e. all in one line
Tumblr media
to this i.e. one that includes line breaks
Tumblr media
use the <br> tag e.g. cloud<br>non-binary<br>21<br>
other html tags that work in descriptions
<href> i.e. the link tag yes you can include a link or more in your tumblr url ppl typically use it to link other accs like tumblr sideblogs or insta accs etc e.g. <href a="[insert url]">[insert text to be seen]</a>
i haven't tried any other html tags so if anyone knows any others that work lmk!

hey since newbie ppl are asking:
HOW TO GET FOLLOWERS ON TUMBLR
(i mean i only have a few hundred but like, idk thats more than 0)
make posts. if ur an artist do Art or whatever if u just wanna talk about shit just Talk. if u wanna talk to urself thats fine who give a shit.
talk about shit u like. it can be fandom shit it can be hobbies it can be random bullshit who cares.
tag ur shit. tag it correctly dont spam tags, if its not about stevens universal dont tag it that just for views bc that gets u blocked and reported as spam but add as many relevant tags as u feel like.
if ur talking about random special interest bullshit tho dont expect the post to get notes unless u have followers most of the time. not that we dont love that shit here, we love posts that are just ppl infodumping about shit we dont know jack shit about, but like. might not pop up for ppl if they arent following the "#deep sea vent worms" tag. u should still talk about deep sea vent worms even if no ones listening tho maybe someone will find it like 4 years later.
follow people. some of them will follow back some wont. i usually dont follow back bc i dont pay attention but other ppl do. make sure ur blog has like, an icon/description first tho so ppl dont think ur a bot and block u.
reblog shit. thats the main point of the site.
talk to people. dont like, be weird and pushy about it or anything (i.e. "HEY IM NEW HERE WILL YOU FOLLOW ME??") but feel free to just make relevant conversation in the tags or in reblogs or in the replies. thats chill u can do that.
u can also dm ppl on here. im too shy to do that but thats an option. i wouldnt reccomend dming them with "please follow me" or whatever but if u have st to Actually DM about then go for it.
oh yeah the ask box use that too. again not to promo but like. if u wanna send ppl asks about their art or ask them qs about stuff theyre into do that. some people are also freaks in the ask box which may or may not be Fine depending on the variety of freak. please observe typical freakish askbox behavior before attempting it yourself and tailor it to the askee (i.e. dont send the horny ask to the blog that loves hearing peoples fucked up workplace osha violation stories. unless they also like horny asks. just, dont assume random blogs like horny asks until Otherwise Specified.)
anyway yeah just. use the site as intended and youll probs get followers Eventually as long as ur Doing Stuff. maybe not many followers but thats fine who give a shit.

Attn Tumblr Newbies:
If you’re worried about commenting or reblogging fic, art, music or whatever, if you think “oh they’re going to think I’m a weirdo” or “they don’t really care what I have to say” or “they’re probably too popular to even notice my notif” -
I just got a 507 word comment on AO3 that legit made me cry. Tear drops, running down my cheeks.
So if you’re feeling self-conscious, please know:
We’re all weirdos.
We all occasionally think no one will care what we have to say and every blog is bigger than our own.
And we’re generally all self-conscious about something we’ve done on this platform.
I’m not demanding your interactions - just as no one has the right to demand free content from me, I don’t have the right to demand interactions you.
But if you think I will in anyway judge you for them?
Babes.
I will cherish every single word in your comment for all eternity - whether it’s one word or 507, or a single emoji. Punctuation. I don’t care, I will cherish it.
I will gaze upon your reblog, empty or not, with wonder and affection, because it means you deem my work worthy enough to share with others.
I will delight in every like you send, holding those tiny hearts to my own like the greatest of treasures.
You don’t have to be afraid to show creators your appreciation. That’s what this hellsite (affectionate) is all about.

hey new tumblr users
Tumblr media
Welcome!
So - you’re starting to settle in to your new tumblr home but the landscape is still pretty wild and you’re not sure entirely what’s going on outside your window.  Since my first post about reblogs kind of blew up a bit and it had a couple of questions showing up in the comments, I figured I’d make another post in case that helps anyone.
Today let’s talk about communicating.
no, no, come back here.  It’s gonna be okay.  This is something you only have to do if you want to.
You can go your entire tumblr existence just reblogging posts and enjoying the people you’re following.  That’s cool.  But I see a lot of new arrivals want to be interactive too and that makes sense considering this is a social media site.  In fact, tumblr can be VERY social given half the chance.  This post here puts it wonderfully.
So, you’re on tumblr.  You’ve picked out an icon for your blog.  You’re reblogging posts you enjoy (sharing the cool rocks you found with the people hanging with you) and you’re ready to get a bit more interactive.  Its kind of daunting though because tumblr seems to have a lot of ways to interact and some unspoken rules on how to do it.  Let’s break this down.
First and easiest is to respond to posts.  You see something you want to comment on, an interesting post about sharing rocks for example.  There are three ways you can interact directly with the post.
1.  When you hit ‘reblog’ there’s a spot for you to add comments (gifs, etc) of your own.  This is great for things you don’t mind everyone and their cousin getting to see.  A quip, adding a fact, telling a related story, politely disagreeing or providing another viewpoint, bouncing off their idea and expanding with one of your own, adding to the story idea they’ve presented, throwing in a relevant gif,  etc.  This is the space for things you don’t mind the entirety of tumblr getting to read.  You’ll notice a lot of posts are chained comments like this with multiple people contributing to the post by the time it reaches you.  There really isn’t any rule about not doing this but general consensus is to make it, somehow, apply to the original post and to not be a butt about whatever your reply is going to be.  Someone posting about fighting depression by making themselves stop and enjoy the way roses smell probably doesn’t need you replying by talking about how rotten roses are and how life is pain, highness.  Start a new post of your own if you want to express that.
2. tags!  Tags are the #tags part of a post when you hit reblog.  A lot of people use these for their original purpose, which is to *cough* make it easier to find things using tumblr’s search engine (tumblr’s search engine is pretty wack).  Still, tags are sometimes useful.  They can, theoretically, help you or people on your blog look up posts quickly.  They can help people doing a general search of tumblr tags find posts on subjects they’re interested in.  I regularly search ‘bunblr’ for instance (highly recommended).  BUT tags have a secondary use that a lot of people have adopted as well.  Tags can be used for a kind of ‘aside conversation’.  This is where you can write comments when you don’t necessarily want to add them to the body of the reblogged post.  It isn’t meant to be shared with tumblr as a whole.  It’s for the people following you.  Sometimes one of your followers will paste your tags to the post itself and you’ll see comments like ‘how could you leave these in the tags?!’  That’s a good thing and usually means you hit a cord but most of the time tags are just for aside conversations and not derailing the post itself.
3.  Reply.  That little speech bubble at the bottom of a post?  Click on that and you get the little ‘reply’ section.  Here’s where you interact with the original poster (OP) directly.  You can ask a question, add a short story, give encouragement, etc.  There’s a character limit on it so you can’t get crazy verbose but its a good way to add a short bit to a post and - hopefully - get a reply from the poster.  Be aware though, people like me are pretty forgetful and don’t always check their notifications.  That little lightning mark at the top of my dash is always at 99+ and pretty roundly ignored on the daily.  Still, other people can also read the reply part and sometimes you’ll get entire discussions in there as people respond.
Be aware that all three of these methods are viewable to everyone.  Anyone who sees the post can click on the notes and the tags, comments and replys will pop up for them.  These aren’t for private conversations.  They’re three ways to interact with posts publicly.
Private communication will be for another post.  So - you ready to test it out?  Use this post as your free trial and get some social interaction practice going on!  Once you’re comfortable you can branch out and there you go.  Social times for everyone (that wants it)!
