about your Vietnamese summer vocab list, is cà rem not used for ice cream anymore? My Vietnam War-era Viet family has always used the word "cà rem" to refer to ice cream and I've always only heard that word to refer to ice cream growing up
Hi! Cà rem works as well although I think it is a bit less common than kem. Thanks for asking!

ahhhhh I don’t know if this is the best place but you’re like my favourite langblr blog and you speak Vietnamese so: I grew up speaking Vietnamese but moved to a foreign country and was basically raised there from the age of six. I can speak Vietnamese (albeit broken) but I can’t write or read. do you have any advice on how I should learn Vietnamese? everyone I know keeps saying I should be haply with just being able to read ahh (I’m so sorry if my English is bad)
I know that feeling. I took Vietnamese classes for 4 years but nothing changed, in my case I can only speak it averagely, understand it almost completely and read very little. In my opinion you should study a language for yourself and not for others, create your own pace and work for your sake.Big inspirations to me are @livefromvietnam, @useless-vietnamfacts and @translatewithme who post vocabulary lists or cultural events. You could also just watch a lot of children shows on preferably VTV4 or look up learning videos on YouTube.Chúc bạn may mắn ! :)

Hi guys! Sorry it has been such a long time since my last post. Here’s an update about me: I’ve been extremely busy with school while trying to apply to college at the same time. I’ve recently got really sick but I’m feeling better now so I made a quick post about the numeral system in Vietnamese.
Numbers: Số
Zero: Không
One: Một
Two: Hai
Three: Ba
Four: Bốn
Five: Năm
Six: Sáu
Seven: Bảy
Eight: Tám
Nine: Chín
Ten: Mười
Tens (20, 30, 40,…): Number + mươi (20 = Hai mươi)
Hundreds (100, 500, 800,…): Number + trăm (500 = năm trăm)
Thousands (1000, 6000,…): Number + ngàn/nghìn (7000 = bảy ngàn/nghìn)
Millions (7000000, 2000000,…): Number + triệu (1000000 = một triệu)
Billions (3000000000, 5000000000,…): Number + tỷ (3000000000 = ba tỷ)
Hundreds/Thousands + one-digit numbers (1004, 208, 403, 5006,…): Number + trăm/ngàn/nghìn + lẻ/linh + number (one-digit number) (801 = tám trăm lẻ/linh một, 3007 = ba ngàn/ngìn lẻ/linh bảy)
Tens/hundreds/thousands + one (21, 401, 9001,…): Number + mươi + mốt (61 = sáu mươi mốt)
Hundreds/Thousands/Millions/Billions and a half (150, 7500,…): Number + trăm/ngàn or nghìn/triệu/tỷ + rưỡi (350 = ba trăm rưỡi)
Counting: Đếm
Counting by Dozens: Number + tá (24 = hai tá)
Counting by Tens: Number + chục (80 = tám chục)
 - NOTES:
The Tens/hundreds/thousands + one rule doesn't apply to 11, 11 is simply pronounced as mười một (10 + 1) instead of mười mốt.
The Hundreds/Thousands/Millions/Billions and a half rule is not necessary, it is just a faster/shorter version that people use when speaking.
When pronouncing tens + a number (41, 23, 94, 67,..), people sometimes would shorten it and only pronounce the first and the second number without saying 'mươi' in between (38 = ba mươi tám or ba tám, 71 = bảy mươi mốt or bảy mốt)
When pronouncing tens + 5 (35, 65, 75, 25,...), instead of saying tens and năm, people would say lăm (95 = chín (mươi) lăm, 55 = năm (mươi) lăm)

Hello! I'm really glad I found your blog because I've been wanting to learn Vietnamese for a while! I was wondering what dialect you make your posts in though?
Hi! Thank you so much, you have no idea how much that means to me!! I’m from the South so I typically post in Southern dialect. But if I know how to say it in Northern dialect, I try to include that as well. Sometimes I just pick the option that is easier for English speakers to pronounce. But don’t worry, the two dialects are very similar so you’ll be fine either way haha.

Every year, Vietnamese and Chinese people celebrate the Mid-Autumn/Moon Festival for a year of successful harvest. The festival takes places on month 8 day 15 of the Chinese calendar. In 2017, it's on October 4th! Although this is a festival widely celebrated in East Asian culture, this post specifically looks at how Vietnamese people celebrate Moon Festival.

This post is focused on Southern Vietnam Street Food. I’m thinking about making a Northern Vietnam Street Food, so please message any street food that you can think of as I am not from Hanoi. Moving from Vietnam to the U.S., what I’ve missed most is definitely the street food. Street food is great due to its affordability and availability. Also, they make great snack because most come in really small portion and they’re extremely flavorful, whether you lean towards savory or sweet food.

This is how the tone marks affect your tone according to spoken Southern Vietnamese. I will make another post to explain the tone marks more thoroughly!
